Environmental and Sustainable Solutions

ENVIRONMENTAL & SUSTAINABILITY POLICY Haddonstone is committed to an Environmental & Sustainability Management System which ensures that work activity processes do not make a significant impact on the environment. As a founder member of the United Kingdom Cast Stone Association, Haddonstone ensures best environmental practice is adopted wherever possible. Consequently, Haddonstone undertakes the management of finite, naturally occurring resources by balancing needs with future sustainability. Objectives include: energy conservation; resource conservation; reducing pollution; waste reduction and re-cycling; and the minimisation of hazardous substance use. As a result, all environmental and sustainability aspects are identified and, where necessary, controlled to minimise or eliminate their effect on the environment. A copy of the company’s Environmental & Sustainability Policy is available on request.

THE THERMAL MASS SOLUTION? Forward thinking specifiers and developers are using robust traditional construction materials that will withstand climate changes. Increasingly, buildings are constructed using high thermal mass materials that are slower to respond to outside temperature changes – meaning that the building stays cooler in hot weather whilst retaining heat in cold weather. This often reduces or removes the need for high energy consumption air conditioning or heating systems. High thermal mass is most simply achieved by using heavyweight, dense materials with traditional sized windows to reduce seasonal heat loss or gain. Haddonstone’s dry cast and wet cast (TecStone) products are excellent examples of heavy and dense building materials.

THE ALTERNATIVES? For health and safety as well as project specific installation requirements, alternative solutions are sometimes required. This is why Haddonstone has developed a unique GRC material called TecLite, see right. TecLite components have the appearance of cast or natural stone but are manufactured in much thinner sections making them lighter to lift and easier to install, whilst minimising transport energy use. Being thin walled, TecLite manufacture requires significantly reduced quantities of raw materials. TecLite is ideal for retro-fit projects where it can successfully enhance an existing building without the need for wasteful demolition.

THE CHOICE IS YOURS… Embracing environmental issues makes sense, both from an economic as well as a green perspective. Haddonstone has shown itself to be at the forefront of cast stone technology, providing cost-effective environmental and material solutions for the construction industry. The choice of high thermal mass or lightweight material ultimately rests with the specifier or developer. Haddonstone can even provide a mix of materials to site, perhaps with Haddonstone and TecStone being used at ground and first floor levels with TecLite used at roof level to minimise the danger of working at height with heavy materials. Whatever choice you make, construction materials from Haddonstone will not need to be maintained or replaced every 5 or 10 years as is the case with some alternative technologies, thereby providing massive whole life cycle benefits.

ADVANTAGES OF USING HADDONSTONE • State-of-the-art production facility ensures minimal rejects during manufacture whilst the stone strength significantly reduces damages on site, resulting in less replacements - saving on both materials and transport • Haddonstone is built to last and is very low maintenance. The durability of Haddonstone give many decades of use • Haddonstone has passed, with flying colours, a series of rigorous assessments by the renowned BRE laboratories relating to Salt Crystallisation and Water Absorption • Haddonstone can recreate eroded or missing designs to help preserve the historic design of a property for future generations to enjoy • Haddonstone is normally cheaper than natural stone, yet very similar in appearance and weathering characteristics. This encourages property owners to restore properties when cost is an issue • Haddonstone uses crushed aggregate to eliminate any waste from quarrying, making cast stone a much more environmentally friendly and economical alternative to natural stone • Haddonstone and TecStone are high thermal mass materials • Haddonstone is committed to an Environmental Management System to ensure that the company does not make a significant impact on the environment

REDUCING OUR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT Haddonstone is committed to the management of finite, naturally occurring resources by balancing present needs with future sustainability. This is being achieved by pursuing the following objectives: energy conservation; resource conservation; reducing pollution; waste reduction and recycling; and, minimising the use of hazardous substances. These are just some of the ways in which Haddonstone is meeting its challenging environmental and sustainability targets: • Energy efficient lighting has been installed wherever possible with all lighting, computers and machinery being turned off when not in use to conserve energy • Water usage is monitored with vapour curing using far less water than spray alternatives • Heating Management System installed, meaning boiler thermostats are turned down as low as possible and set to come on at optimum times • All inward deliveries are subject to conditions of Prescribed Process Licence PPC/09/S thereby ensuring quality is maintained • Timber for moulds/packing is utilised for maximum usage with off-cuts retained for future use

• Timber is sourced from companies committed to supplying from legal and sustainable sources as defined by the Timber Trade Federation code of conduct. Haddonstone is registered with the UK Wood Packaging Material Marking Programme • Production materials are used in batches to almost eliminate waste on the factory floor • Noise is kept to a minimum and employees provided with appropriate protection as required • Safeguards are in place to prevent accidental release of contaminants to water, air or land • Haddonstone is registered with the Environment Agency so that any waste materials are disposed of through licensed waste management providers • Recycling occurs wherever possible, including traceable disposal of fluorescent tubes, cardboard, plastic, electrical items, print cartridges, toners, batteries and thinners in accordance with Environment Agency and WEEE regulations. Sawdust and chippings are even donated for use as animal bedding • Off-cuts of polystyrene used for packaging are re-used wherever possible with shrink wrap off-cuts recycled

• Deliveries are made using custom designed and constructed double-deck HGV’s complete with demountable fork lift. These features maximise payload and minimise site off-load time thus reducing idling diesel consumption. Delivery routes are planned in advance to maximise effectiveness and minimise energy use. Haddonstone vehicles are regularly maintained, equipped with catalytic converters and able to deliver within the London Low Emmison Zone. • Haddonstone has good recycling potential, performing comparably to other outer envelope materials such as bricks, blocks and other masonry materials

ABOUT HADDONSTONE Established in 1971, Haddonstone is now recognised as the world’s foremost manufacture of high quality landscape ornaments and architectural cast stone. Standard designs range from planters, fountains and statuary to balustrading, porticos and even fireplaces. Haddonstone also creates custom made designs for both restoration and new build projects, utilising the company’s studios and production facilities in both the UK and USA. As a responsible manufacturer and exporter, corporate and social responsibility as well as environmental and sustainability issues are important to us and to our customers.
