Surveying the sands of Giza, the great Sphinx has stood guard since about 2500 B.C. The greatest monumental sculpture in the ancient world, the Sphinx is carved out of a single ridge of stone 240 feet (73 meters) long and 66 feet (20 meters) high. It represents the body of a lion with the head of a king or a god. The Great Sphinx is located in Egypt on the Giza plateau, situated about six miles west of Cairo. This area is part of the necropolis of ancient Memphis, the seat of power for the pharaohs. Representations of being used in secure areas as symbols of protection in the Egyptian, Greek and Roman culture. According to Hesiod was the daughter of Chimera and Matins or other hurricane and Echidna .

It is not known by what name the creators called their statue, as the Great Sphinx does not appear in any known inscription of the Old Kingdom, and there are no inscriptions anywhere describing its construction or its original purpose. In the New Kingdom, the Sphinx was called Hor-em-akhet which means Horus of the Horizon, and the pharaoh Thutmose IV specifically referred to it as such in his Dream Stele. The commonly used name Sphinx was given to it in classical antiquity, about 2000 years after the accepted date of its construction, by reference to a Greek mythological beast with a lion's body, a woman's head and the wings of an eagle. Although, like most Egyptian sphinxes, the Great Sphinx has a man's head and no wings. The English word sphinx comes from the ancient Greek Σφιγξ (Sphinx), apparently from the verb σφίγγω which means “to squeeze”, after the Greek sphinx who strangled anyone who failed to answer her riddle. The English word sphincter comes from the same root.

Αn interesting story about Sphinx Top of the Sphinx is lying with teeth and claws outstretched and I met throughout the life of the wilderness. Oedipus fell in the first momentum, tromaxen the first appearance - such form and such speech had never imagined until then. But although he akkoumpa both feet Monster STOU Oedipus chest, He held fast - and far from now not scared anymore, because it has lysis ready and will win. Yet not happy about this victory. The look of sadness filled the Sphinx not I look, looks beyond the narrow path that goes Stass Thebes and at Colonus will finish. And clearly forebode his soul the Sphinx there will talk again with bigger and harder riddles that have no answers.
