Why use animations in powerpoint for teaching Powerpoint provides us with ways to make teaching visually enjoyable. The various visual aids and options that enable the use of graphics, pictures and animations attract and engage students’ attention and improve their memory and mental performance. Also, powerpoint presentations serve to highlight important points, that is keypoints which are thought provoking, yet easy to follow and record by note-taking. The usage of animations in powerpoint is quite an effective tool, given that the cognitive process of incorporating information usually results from visual representations. Finally, the fact that for the last two decades students have been accustomed to viewing data expressed in visual and spatial terms is a compelling factor in the creation of animated lessons. However, research has shown that animations and visual aids are effective only when they are well-designed and when the speed according to which visual information is presented is on a par with the time the learner requires in order to process it sufficiently. Otherwise too many animations will be distracting.

How to create animations in powerpoint You can animate text, object or picture by either adding transition effects or animating objects. Animated transitions can be used when you move from one slide to another during your presentation. First of all open Microsoft Office Powerpoint 2010 via Start, all programs, Microsoft Office. A. Applying Transitions When you want to add movement between your slides during Slide Show you use the Transition tab. There you will find three forms of transition (Subtle – Exciting – Dynamic content) that will shape the way your slides appear.
Subtle transitions for slight effects
Exciting transitions for strong effects
Dynamic content transitions for dynamic background effects
1. After you select the slide go to the Transition tab. Select the transition you wish to use. The More button provides a gallery of transitions. 2. Then visit the Effect Options for each transition. 3. Go to the Timing group and set the slide transition speed between one slide and the next in the Duration button and manage the sound from the Sound drop down menu for your transition. 4. The Advance Slide controls your transition depending on whether you choose to use your mouse click or a specified duration typed in the After switch. 5. You can click Apply to all if you want the same transition effect for all slides. Try not to make your transitions last too long as this makes them boring for your students. 6. Slides that include transition effects have a star in the Slide pane, which is also a play animation sign.

7. If you want to remove a transition effect from a slide select it and then click None from the Transition To This Slide group. 8. On the left side of the Transitions tab you will find the Preview command. B.
Animating Texts and Objects
You can animate texts and objects via the Animation tab. There you will find four categories (Entrance-Emphasis-Exit-Motion Paths).
Entrance controls the way the text/object enters the slide.
Emphasis effects animate the text/object while it is on the slide.
Exit effects manage the way the text/object exits the slide.
Motion Paths set text/objects in motion within the slide. 1. Go to the Animation tab where you will find preset animations.
Click on the object before you choose a category and then choose Animation Pane. For some effects you have Effects Options where you can choose a direction. 2. If you want to add a second effect on the same slide do not go to the same category because if you do the second effect replaces the first. Go to Add Animation to add any further effects. 3. If you want two texts or objects to have the same effect click on the first one that already has the effect, then go to Animation Painter and finally click on the second item you want to copy the effects to. The numbers next to texts/objects or on slides in the slide pane are markers for you to remember the effect for each text/object, even if they have more than one. 4. When you have finished setting your effects on a slide then you have to manage them through the Animation Pane. After you click it, it will appear on the right side of your slide where you can shift the effects by dragging them up or down and changing their position, if you wish to do so. 5. The effects will start automatically if you click on Start With Previous or Start After Previous, unless you want to manage them manually by clicking your mouse. In the same pane you have Effect 5
Options that differ according to the effect you are using. Here you can add a sound or colour effect, you can animate your text according to word or letter sequence and also adjust the time the animation lasts or is repeated. 6. In the end click on the play command to check the result.
