LECTURE 2 COLUMNS AND BEAMS

COLUMNS AND BEAMS

 Columns are vertical load bearing members of a structural

frame which transmits the beam and floor loads down to the foundation. They are usually constructed in storey heights therefore reinforcement must be lapped to provide structural continuity.

 Beams are horizontal load bearing members which are

classified as either main beams which transmit floor and secondary beam loads to the columns or secondary beams which transmit loads to main beams.
