LECTURE 4 ROOF

ROOF ď ľ

Defined as a covering provided over the top of a building: 1. To keep out rain, sun, wind 2. To protect the building from adverse effects of these elements.

ď ľ

A roof basically consists of roof covering materials supported on structural elements installed on the building top.

ROOF 

A well planned roof should satisfy the following requirements: – should be structurally sound and strong enough to carry the anticipated dead and live loads safely. – Should be durable enough against adverse effects of natural elements such as rain, wind and sun. – Should have efficient waterproofing should provide desired insulation against heat. – Should provide desired insulation against sound.

ROOF FLAT ROOF - CONSTRUCTION 

Reinforced concrete is normally used for the construction of flat roof. The roof slabs are formed and casted in the same manner as concrete floor system. Widely used for roof construction of widely spanned buildings e.g. shopping centers since they provide usable space on the roof top for recreation or parking space.

ROOF FLAT ROOF - CONSTRUCTION ď ľ

Advantages: - plan of building is more flexible - roof top can be used for parking, recreational, garden etc. - suitable for high rise and long span buildings.

ď ľ

Disadvantages: - high maintenance, needs more attention. - needs waterproofing layer to prevent leakage. - water needs to be discharged as soon as possible to avoid stagnant water. - provision of gutter and rainwater down pipe is essential. - once leaking, difficult to locate source and rectification becomes a major work and is expensive. - duration of construction is longer.
