Create an abstract installation that interacts with the interior lighting condition
APPROACH
Using the given objects, the volumes are suspended around the ceiling llight sources based on a 2D/3D grid system. Inspired by the weeping willow, the hanging structures create a system of lightwells that create a variety of light patterns on the walls and floor when the overhead light source is rotated.These patterns then guide the circulation path and carve out inhabitable spaces within the installation.

Create a threshold condition for the American University of Sharjah Student Center courtyard that appeals to the local context and culture of Sharjah
APPROACH
Conceptual theme: Local dhow boat Using the dhow as an inspiration, we created a playful framework structure that acts as the enclosure and draws attention to the sunken courtyard. A heightened sense of scale, along with the reflective blue-tinted windows, counters the claustrophobia of being below ground level. Tensile structures offer relief from sun during the day and provide a dynamic background for night-time lighting. The secondary rib structure results in a dynamic shadow dance with the sun’s movement.

Determine an appropriate atmosphere for a given exhibition space by manipulating the existing planes.
APPROACH
We chose to create an airy interior that could be manipulated to accomodate various types of exhibitions. This effect was achieved by isolating the ceiling as the primary plane to change. The design consisted of a landscape of increasing skylights that could then be adjusted using a series of opaque and translucent filters to control the interior light setting.

Design a system of parasitic intervention that answers the needs of the client

Prof. Gaurang Desai Location: American University of Sharjah, Shared studio space NEEDS: A space that is more friendly towards student displays, reviews, and lectures. Also need additional space for professors’offices.
APPROACH
Using Wikihouse open-source systems, I created a catalogue of furniture products using their standard method of construction. This catalogue was then adapted and used to alter the shared studio space to fultill the client’s needs. Wikihouse offices were incorporated into the studio and lecture space that extend beyond the architectural shell to interact with the surrounding campus community. Additional intervention in the form of a suspended ceiling plane enhances lighting conditions. The entire structure is parasitic in its uniqueness within the context and its ability to be removed completely.
