History Tour at the Athabasca Riverfront.

People The Athabasca Region has been experiencing growth in recent years. According to the 2006 and 2008 Censuses, 10,321 people live within Athabasca Country's 6,126 km2.

About Athabasca Country

PAGE 5 - about athabasca

Industry The economy of Athabasca Country is diverse. Major employers include Athabasca University, Alberta Pacific Pulp Mill, Millar Western Sawmill, and a variety of oil and gas exploration companies. Traditionally, farming has always played an important role in the community and the economy.

The geography of the region has shaped the history. As you drive into the Athabasca Region from the south, at about Nestow, the watershed direction of flow changes from south to north near Nestow. This means that water draining into the North Saskatchewan River goes east and drains into the Atlantic, while the Athabasca River drains north into the Arctic Ocean. The Town of Athabasca sits at 533m above sea level. The 55th parallel runs in between Grassland and Wandering River.

Weather and Daylight The region receives an average annual precipitation of 382mm of rain and 122cm of snow. On June 21, the region receives 17 hours and 23 minutes of sunlight, compared to December 21 when there is 7 hours and 18 minutes of daylight. Visit our website for current weather.

Transportation The region is serviced by Greyhound Bus Lines and the Athabasca Airport welcomes fly-in visitors. Charter service is also available.

Distance to Athabasca from:

Calgary .................................441km Edmonton ...........................146km Fort McMurray...................305km Lac La Biche ..........................95km Slave Lake............................131km Saskatoon............................667km Toronto .............................3,537km Vancouver........................1,360km Yellowknife ......................1,370km

The Athabasca River is the only river that sits entirely in Alberta and is the longest undammed river on the prairies.

Birdwatching Three out of the four major North American migratory bird flyways cross over northern Alberta making birdwatching a very viable hobby. During the spring and fall you can observe rare and common species of birds including Tundra Swans and American White Pelicans. There are six bird-watching stands around the region and 700 bluebird houses between Nestow and Athabasca. Contact us for a bird list and bird itineraries. If you have a group, accommodation arrangements may be made at the Long Lake Outdoor Education Centre.

Nature

Athabasca Country is located in the boreal bio-region of Alberta which has diverse vegetation and wildlife. This diversity is evident from agricultural areas to spruce, pine and aspen landscapes.

Camping If your idea of the perfect campsite is one that is lakeside, well-treed, possibly with a beach and the opportunity to fish, then we have many choices for you. With the exception of a few private campgrounds, Athabasca Country has ample unserviced sites for small to medium sized units. See page 30 for more details.

Trails Athabasca Country is recognized for being situated at the junction of the Athabasca Landing Trail and Peace River Trail (both part of the Trans Canada Trail) and Trans Canadian Snowmobile Trail. The Muskeg Creek Trails are among the best municipal trail systems that hook up to town-wide Rotary Trail. Groomed Cross Country Ski and Snowmobile Trails complete the mix. Contact us for maps.

For the avid outdoorsperson who likes to hunt and fish there a few places in Athabasca Country that could become your favourite. From the superb Athabasca River pike and walleye fishing to the Moose, Elk and White Tail Deer hunting this part of the boreal region has some spectacular wildlife. See page 31 for our fishing guide.

The story of the Athabasca Region is one of proximity to waterways, good overland routes and successful agriculture.

Amber Valley Celebrates 100 Years Between 1909 and 1911, the area known as Amber Valley had 77 quarter sections that became home to 170 Blacks haling from Oklahoma. They sought a more tolerant home and established a thriving community by farming and picking up extra work. A school, interdenominational church, and post office once serviced the area. Over time, most of the original settlers have moved on, but the Amber Valley Cultural Centre, Jordan Murphy Cemetery, and the Obadiah homestead remain as evidence of this important community. Centennial Celebrations take place July 3-5th. Tours of the Amber Valley museum are available by appointment. Contact Doug (780) 675-4382 or LeRoy (780) 675-3083 for more information.

The Klondike In 1897 and 1898 the Klondike Gold Rush saw nearly 758 people pass through Athabasca and of those, about 500 got to Dawson City, Yukon. Two out of the eight routes to the Yukon passed through Athabasca; one went over land through the Peace Country. The second and best route started at the current day Athabasca River front, prospectors travelled down river towards Fort McMurray to Fort Resolution, up the Mackenzie River to Fort MacPherson, where they finished their journey up the Bell and Porcupine Rivers. Records show that in 1898, one group departed May 1 and arrived July 25. The Klondike rush put the town of Athabasca on the map and as a result, regular stagecoach traffic soon followed.

Athabasca Archives Are you on the hunt for lost relatives of the Athabasca area? Then you will need to visit Athabasca Archives. With over 70 meters of textual records, 16,000 photographs and microfilmed newspapers from 1909 to 2001, Athabasca Archives is full of history. Open Tuesday and Thursday afternoons (780)675-2735. Poet Robert Service wrote several poems including one called ‘Athabasca Dick’ and enlisted for the war while in Athabasca.

More then 100 years ago, the Tawatinaw Valley was part of the major portage connecting the North Saskatchewan and Athabasca Rivers. It eventually became known as the Athabasca Landing Trail and was first built by the Hudsons Bay Company. These days the scenic and well-maintained gravel road is open year-round. It can be accessed by turning east off Highway 2 and entering the valley at the following communities:

The Athabasca Landing Trail (Trans Canada Trail) Currently a group is working to redevelop an overland route as part of the Trans Canada Trail network, The Athabasca Landing Trail has been completed in various parts between Athabasca and Rochester for non-motorized use. Featuring sections of the historic trail, it also goes along the old railbed and past the marshy valley bottom that turns in a river. Venture through sandy Jackpine tree stands, past of fields of crops, pastures with livestock and visit the businesses along the way. Call for more information.

Rochester

Perryvale A pleasant place to get out of your vehicle, stretch and enjoy the Trans Canada Trail. Visit the general store for refreshments and peruse the selection of unique handmade gift items. This active community holds bingos and has an annual Fall Turkey Shoot.

Meanook This picturesque hamlet was once a stage coach stop on the Old Athabasca Landing Trail. The name is derived from a native word meaning ‘good camping place’. Be on the lookout April through June for bluebirds at one of the many area birdhouses.

Colinton A bustling valley community that boasts the only bowling alley in the region and is home to a outdoor skating rink. There are antiques at the general store, and the hotel is a must-be place on Thursdays in the summer for steak night.
