Fall 2024 Haig Point Happenings

HAPPENINGS

FROM THE CHIEF

As we move into this beautiful time of year, I hope you are all taking the opportunity to enjoy the peace and tranquility that Daufuskie Island offers. Personally, I find myself rising earlier to catch the stunning sunrises, a moment that reminds me to focus on the things that truly matter. Our unique island provides the perfect backdrop for centering ourselves, reconnecting with one another, and reinforcing our collective commitment to making the dreams of Haig Point a reality.

I’m always inspired by the multi-generational family gatherings that many of you enjoy here at Haig Point. Recently, I’ve begun sharing the island with my own family, and it has been a wonderful opportunity to reconnect without the distractions of everyday life. Daufuskie Island has a way of fostering these deep connections, and I hope many of you are finding that same sense of closeness with your loved ones.

My team and I are diligently working on several key projects and initiatives that are moving along smoothly, and I couldn’t be prouder of their progress. The road project has been particularly successful, and while the first phase is wrapping up, the Transportation Committee is we are already in the planning stages for the next section of roadway. This endeavor is a testament to the growing strength of our team and the committee system that is in place here at Haig Point.

In the coming weeks, we will be replacing the roofs on both the racquets/fitness center and the adult pool pump house. Both were damaged by Hurricane Debby. The Grill Room fire recovery project is also progressing well; the structural repairs in the dining room have been completed, and we are now shifting our focus to finishes and flooring. Once we have a confirmed delivery date for the necessary equipment, we’ll be able to project a grand reopening date. Additionally, we continue to make incremental improvements to the Mansion, working closely with staff to elevate the overall service experience and housekeeping processes. Expect to see ongoing enhancements in this area.

One growing concern, however, is road safety. We’ve noticed some dangerous situations caused by cars and carts not adhering to our longstanding road safety guidelines. It is vital that we maintain the culture of safety and peace that makes Haig Point so special. Please ensure that your guests and vendors, especially those driving carts that may be modified to go faster, understand the importance of staying under the 25 mph limit, and if they are driving a car that they come to a stop for passing carts. Each member is responsible for the actions of their guests and vendors, so your support is essential in preserving the safety of our community.

We are also making progress in establishing a health and wellness clinic on Daufuskie Island in collaboration with massage/physical therapists, and Volunteers in Medicine (VIM). Massage and Physical Therapy appointments are available for registration in ClubEssential and are being held in a newly renovated space at the Helmus Center. In addition, Dr. Joan Thomas and Mrs. Julie Klemm, who serves on the board of VIM, are working with us to coordinate a plan for providing members with non-emergency health check-ups and entrylevel care. This will be a volunteer-driven operation, primarily supported by foundations and our member doctors. It’s an exciting initiative, but it will take several months to fully implement.

At Calibogue Club, Chef continues to impress with new menu items that have been well received by the membership. We continue to focus on recruiting front-of-house staff and enhancing training across all our dining outlets to ensure we maintain exceptional service.

Finally, I’m pleased to report that the ferry system remains in great condition and continues to operate within budget. Our Haig Point IV boat recently underwent dry dock maintenance, where significant preventative work was done. Chris Doscher and the Marine Department have has taken a proactive approach to managing the health of the fleet, and we are applying the same level of care to our golf course equipment, implementing new technology and staffing strategies to better maintain these important assets.

As always, I appreciate your continued support and patience as we work to make Haig Point the best it can be.

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT

DAUFUSKIE COMMUNITY FARM

A place of possibilities

Magical is a word often used to describe the Daufuskie Community farm, a tourist stop, community hub and working agricultural facility just off of Haig Point Road. The Farm’s sprawling eight acres currently houses nubian goats, chickens, ducks, geese, and lots of wildlife. Many humans consider it their second home. Although its 20 quirky buildings, orchard, woodworking shop and well tended garden make the farm impressive today, there is a different reason that magical is the farm’s go-to descriptor.

Sowing

Looking closely you can start to imagine all the work it may have taken to build these buildings, plant these trees, tend these fences, raise these goats and on and on. Each building on site was made with lumber felled, milled, and finished right here. Each plant requires different care, targeted nutrients and calculated planting. Each animal relies on the farm to be fed, watered, kept clean and tended to. These often dirty, time consuming tasks were and are financed and done almost totally by volunteers. You may be one of them or; you may ask, why?

Because; the time spent here is sowing toward something greater than a paycheck (that probably wouldn't reflect the true value of your time anyway)! Every space here reflects the dream someone had to grow their own food, sponsor their own goat, pursue an artistic endeavor, learn beekeeping, make cheese, or share the skills they have. Many volunteers have spent countless hours cultivating this as a space to not just encourage thinking big, but to build a solid foundation for ‘castles in the sky’. The farm itself was once a fantastical dream of Miss Pat’s brought to reality. Although it has had its ups and downs, the farm stands strong today as a testament to the community around it and the farm’s role within it. Resources spent here create fertile ground and sow seeds for the future that are continually being harvested.

Reaping

Living on a bridgeless island, especially now, requires creative solutions. Lately the farm has hosted more educational classes, teaching community members to make kombucha, manage their household waste by composting and grow their own garden more successfully. The goats on the farm will be bred this year for milk and cheese and our volunteer garden manager is working hard to raise greens, herbs, veggies and flowers for the community. The ‘Farmacy’ is a growing storefront along Haig Point Road that is currently undergoing a beautiful makeover. At the Farmacy you can find honor system style eggs and seasonal produce. This is also where you can pick up bouquets of flowers on Fridays. One less thing that has to be procured off-island is always a success. The community farm invites you to be a part of the solution! Join our members in reaping the benefits of what this 8 acres can provide.

Imagine sunlight filtering through massive live oaks- dappling long threads of spanish moss, the distant clucking of chickens, goats grazing a soft green pasture, all set to the tune of one of Miss Pat’s wonderous stories of a life well lived, you would think it’s magical too.

Speaking on behalf of someone who is experiencing the total magic of the farm for the first time, I want to say thank you to those who have come before me and who continue to support the Farm with their labor and finances. You are sowing into the continual positive growth of not just the farm but the entire island community.

If you have a big dream, a little idea, a skill to share or creative solution please contact me at daufuskiecommunityfarm@gmail.com or stop by and see us in person.
