FROM THE CHIEF
DON HUNTER Chief Executive Officer
ANew Year, A Renewed Purpose
Happy New Year, Haig Point family! As we step into 2025, I am filled with gratitude for the journey we’ve shared and excitement for what lies ahead. Reflecting on 2024, I can confidently say it was one of the most transformative and rewarding years of my career. The unwavering support, kindness, and commitment of this community have been instrumental in the progress we’ve made together. From the tireless efforts of our volunteers to the thoughtful guidance of our committees, every contribution has shaped a year that will stand out as one of the most meaningful in my life. I am thrilled to continue working with all of you to build upon this strong foundation in the year ahead.
With spring fast approaching, now is the perfect time to plan your upcoming visits to Haig Point and secure housing for the exciting months ahead. Whether you’re preparing to join us for Heritage Week, the Fourth of July, or another special occasion, early reservations will help ensure your plans come together seamlessly. For those who own homes, this is also a wonderful opportunity to
consider joining our rental program. If your home is available, especially during peak times, I would love to connect with you to explore how you can help provide unforgettable experiences for other members and guests. Together, we can make every visit to Haig Point a cherished memory.
As we turn the page to this new year, let us carry forward the passion, collaboration, and vision that define Haig Point. The opportunities before us in 2025 are immense, and I am honored to continue this journey with such an extraordinary community. Thank you for the warmth and support you’ve shown me and for the role each of you plays in making Haig Point such a special place. Here’s to a year filled with new achievements, cherished moments, and continued success!
With heartfelt gratitude,
Don Hunter CEO, Haig Point Club

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT
THE HAIG POINT FOUNDATION Fostering Community and Progress on Daufuskie Island
In 2016, Hurricane Matthew ravaged Daufuskie Island, South Carolina. As the damage across the island was being assessed, the founding members of The Haig Point Foundation quickly realized there was a significant need for financial support to many island residents and communities. As a result, the Haig Point Foundation was born as a safe place for others who love our island home to support one another.
As the cleanup from Hurricane Matthew was underway, the founding members of The Haig Point Foundation asked the question: are there other ways that we can help? And the answer was YES! We identified four key areas we knew we could make a difference to Daufuskie Island and the residents across the entire island.
I. Community Enhancements
II. Emergency Relief
III. Supporting Daufuskie Island Non-profit Organizations
IV. Scholarship Programs
Community Enhancements:
The Haig Point Foundation plays a crucial role in funding projects that improve the quality of life for island residents. This includes initiatives related to education, healthcare, infrastructure, and emergency preparedness. Through the support of our generous donors, here are a few of the projects The Haig Point Foundation has been able to support:
• Mary Field School Preservation Project
• Francis Jones Playground
• Oyster Union Society Hall Renovations
• Blue Bird Nesting Boxes across Daufuskie Island
• Daufuskie Island Fire Department equipment purchases
• AED units for the ferries
• Daufuskie Island Historical Foundation Oil & Wick House Restoration
• Daufuskie Island Gullah Cemeteries Signage
Emergency Relief:
As we all know, we cannot predict when or where a natural disaster will strike. In an effort to always be prepared, The Haig Point Foundation established and maintains a $50,000 emergency relief fund so we will be ready to jump into action whenever we get the call to help! This may involve financial aid, distribution of essential supplies, or coordination of relief efforts with other organizations. Here are a few ways that we have been able to help:
• Storm Cleanup for Hurricanes and Tropical Storms
• During COVID-19, provided food, masks and testing kits for island residents
• Coordinated the Emergency Beach Sign Program with the Daufuskie
Island Fire Department
• Funded Cots for The Island Emergency Response (REDDI) team
Supporting Island Non-Profits:
The Haig Point Foundation has partnered with many of the non-profit organizations across Daufuskie Island to provide financial assistance whenever possible. Organizations may submit a grant request for specific capital projects to aid our unique community. Some of the organizations that The Haig Point Foundation has been able to support include: ADD logos and pics if appropriate
Daufuskie Island Historical Foundation
Daufuskie Island Independent School
Daufuskie Island Elementary School
Daufuskie Island Conservancy
Daufuskie Island Community Foundation
Daufuskie Island Community Farm
Daufuskie Island Turtle Patrol
Volunteers in Medicine on Daufuskie Island
Scholarships:
Annually The Haig Point Foundation awards approximately $40,000 in scholarship funds to both residents of Daufuskie Island and employees of Haig Point. These funds enable them to pursue higher education and professional development opportunities, which can range from college or university degree, trade school, and continued education, including culinary arts or captain’s school. For more details and the application scholarship forms please visit haigpointfoundation.org/scholarship.
The Haig Point Foundation would not be able to assist with any of the worthy projects listed above without the loyal support of our Island Residents. Here are a few ways you can get involved!
Donate: Contributions of any size make a significant difference!
Volunteer: The Haig Point Foundation welcomes volunteers who are passionate about making a positive impact on Daufuskie Island. If you are interested in learning how you can help contact us at info@ haigpointfoundation.org or contact any member of our Board of Directors, listed on our website.
Attend Our Events:
The Haig Point Foundation hosts various fundraising events throughout the year, providing opportunities to learn more about our work and support our mission. These events include our Annual Haig Point Foundation Golf Tournament, hosted annually the Monday before the Heritage. Save the date for this year’s tournament: Monday, April 14, 2025. We host our charitable auction every other fall, returning in 2025. Additionally we have hosted other one-time events, such as our Season Of Giving Event in in December 2024 at The Canoe Club and Casino Night in the past.
In October 2024, The Haig Point Foundation launched “A Season of Giving: Lighting Up Our Island Community”. Our goal was to raise $50,000 by the end of 2024 and we are thrilled to announce that with your help we have already exceeded that total!
The Haig Point Foundation is a vital partner in the ongoing effort to build a brighter future for Daufuskie Island. The Board of Directors are committed to being goodstewards of the funds raised towards our mission. With your continued support, the Haig Point Foundation will keep working to make a lasting impact on the lives of island residents.
The Haig Point Foundation, a 501 (C)(3) non-profit organization, engages Daufuskie Island residents and supports community enhancements, provides emergency funds for hurricanes and other natural disasters, and provides scholarships for college and continued education.
