ROGER HOLDING

Roger Holding (OH’66) has long been a highly engaged member of the Haileybury community.

Roger, a retired Chartered Accountant has moved back to Melbourne after spending much of his working life in Geelong. He and his wife, Debra, a former President of the Old Geelong Collegians Association met at a combined alumni dinner many years ago and haven’t looked back. Roger is a former President of the Old Haileyburians Association and for many years served as Haileybury’s representative on the APS Past Students Golf Committee.

Roger maintains his connections because of the wonderful advancements that he has seen the School deliver over the past 20 years “watching a school expand its culture and be at the forefront of providing an unequalled educational experience”.

He remains impressed by the development of the City campus and Haileybury’s unique work in Beijing.

Roger is a member of the 1892 Circle as well as the Winged Heart Society. While contributing an annual gift to the Haileybury Scholarship Fund (1892 Scholarship), Roger has also decided to leave a bequest to the Haileybury Foundation in order to “help those who have the ability but not the opportunity”.

Roger wishes to see young people achieve their potential and enjoy the incredible experiences that a Haileybury education offers. There is no doubt that those who contribute, like Roger, are seeing the true value of their gift through the inspiring stories and smiling faces in this publication.

DR DOUGLAS TRAVIS

Dr Douglas Travis (OH’74), a semiretired urologist, has carved an impressive clinical career combining business, management, delivery of outstanding medical services and corporate advisory, holding roles such as Director of Surgery for one of Melbourne’s largest public hospitals, running his own private practice, and holding the position of Victorian President of the Australian Medical Association (AMA).

Dr Travis is proudly supporting two students who are the beneficiaries of the Dr Douglas Travis Scholarships. The inaugural recipient was Berwick Year 10 student, Vinith Imayavasan and more recently Newlands Year 7 student, Bhanu Mahendran. On both occasions, Dr Travis spent a considerable amount of time with Haileybury Foundation staff interviewing potential candidates for the scholarships on offer. Dr Travis hopes that by offering these opportunities, students will be able to find their tomorrow with a life-changing Haileybury education. He believes “it is attitude, mixed with aptitude that will determine your altitude”.

Dr Travis explains the rationale behind his significant commitment to the Foundation:

“I have seen many a patient who could have carved out a brilliant career, but the inability to afford an education at a leading private school denied them the opportunity to nurture and grow their brilliance into something that could transform the ordinary into greatness”.

We are incredibly grateful for the contribution that Dr Travis makes, and we have no doubt that he is making a significant difference to not only those students he is supporting, but also to Haileybury and society as a whole.
