the Blender Tempe, Arizona, US Graduate Studio Spring 2015 Thesis Design Instructor: Michael Rotondi Partner: Aaron Escamilla

The studio's thesis was to design spaces for Arizona State University that inspires interdisciplinary research and higher education. We discovered through research on institutions, gaming and networks, that a whole new educational model is needed to achieve true interdisciplinary work. This new model is the foundation of our design. 2

As a class we divided into several groups to focus on different sites within the ASU campus. Each of the groups developed an educational model to inform their project design which included three primary elements: Hub, Silk Road and Times Square. The Hub is the intersection of activities where academic and applied research occurs. The Silk Road is the connective tissue that integrates program and resources along a neutral space that is accessible t o e v e r y o n e . Ti m e s S q u a re i s a n interactive display that connects people to the information in our open-source database. Our project took the first step of transforming the educational model through the design of a new mobile device application: "ASU Interest Pad". It combines an intellectual database with a campus-wide social networking system. 8

The architecture works interactively with this app. It becomes the physical representation of the educational model. In addition, we explored the idea of "Fluid Surface" as a method to create spaces that promote interactions and freedom for the users. Fluid Space does this by creating a space familiar to the body but strange to the eyes. The way people use this surface is defined by their daily activities. While traveling along the surface, they are required to interact with a constantly changing environment. The site was divided into two connected parts: a public park and an interdisciplinary research center. The research center is comprised of project workspace and related facility. The park not only provides all the amenities to the University and the public, but also acts as an out-door projection of the research center. During the process of creating the form, "Minimal Path" and "Minimal Surface" theory was used as our form generating logic. This is the perfect manifesto for this idea of "Fluid Surface". 11

The Missing Door Tempe, Arizona, US Graduate Studio Fall 2014 Conceptual Design (Lapsus Imaginis) Instructor: Elena Rocchi

Everything is randomly moving all around us without anyone noticing. The forces driving this situation are difficult to stop. During this process, many things are lost: traditions, values, conditions of space; yet no one is conscious about it. By learning from history, we understand the significance of a door to a space. A door represents the context. A door carries memory. A door completes the whole. A door expresses the desire. We once understood and realized this within architecture, as it was in Rome. However, now the meaning has been lost. Not only do we not fully understand the physical door, we also are missing the greater significance of the mental door. A door to find yourself, a door which is never just a door. 20
