MY PASSION
LANDSCAPE & ARCHITECTURE INTERESTS FROM A YOUNG AGE
6
•• INTERESTS
BACKGROUND At a young age, I started drawing housing and landscape layout plans. At first, I started drawing housing layouts, these were essentially “dream homes”. But my focus quickly turned to the landscape of the home. These drawings were done when I was 13 years old - ten years ago. At that time, I did not know landscape architecture was a profession. An uncle of mine has owned a landscape company in the GTA for last 25 years. During a visit to his home when I was about 8, a few of his plans were left out and I began looking through them. I began studying them, I would read all the notes, and analyze the hand drawn graphics, and detail pages. After this, I began looking through as many plans as I could every time I visited my uncle. I was fascinated by these drawings. It was exciting for me to look through them and imagine what the proposed plan would look like when it was completed. This was the original inspiration that led me to draw my own plans. At 13, to draw these landscape plans was one of my favourite hobbies. I would spend a long time colouring, labelling, and detailing these drawings. These drawings are very significant to me, because they are proof that landscape architecture has always been my passion, long before I chose it as a career.

GREEN SPACES IN URBAN CITIES Chicago, Illinois During my visit to Chicago, I had been eager to visit various parks that had been inspiration for past designs and topics of previous research papers. I was surprised by how much we were able to see by travelling by foot or bike throughout the city. Most of Chicago’s lakefront is devoted to public realm green spaces. The green spaces are interconnected across the city’s downtown core, at the lakefront. We spent most of our trip using the city rentable bikes to travel from place to place. The connectivity of city scape to green space, to waterfront made for enjoyable movement through the city. I was able to see Lakeshore East Park, Grant Park, Millennium Park, and Northerly Island, but there was still so much left to see. I will definitely return to Chicago again to explore more.

While living in Toronto, the Toronto Islands have been my favourite escape from the city, within the city. Accessed only by water, the Toronto Islands is comprised of multiple smaller islands which is home to residents, green space, and an amusement park. The Island is the largest non-vehicular accessed island in North America. The 300 or so permanent residents of the island travel solely by foot or bike. Exploring the picturesque cottage homes, walking the boardwalk, biking forest trails, or visting Centre Island Amusement Park; the island is the perfect escape from the downtown Toronto lifestyle. Although becoming an island resident is difficult to achieve, I would love the opportunity to live there one day.
HISTORY, CULTURE & CHARACTER Charleston, South Carolina & Savannah, Georgia My family has been travelling to the southern states for a number of years. Savannah & Charleston are my favourite destinations because of their rich history and sweet southern charm. Each the oldest cities in their home states, they have maintained much of their historical heritage through well-preserved architecture and public spaces, boasting classic southern hospitality.

One of the most notable features in Savannah is the 22 park squares within the Downtown Historic District. The parks are located in a grid pattern, known as the Oglethorpe Plan. This provided accessible green space within the densely populated urban area. Pictured is the large oak trees covered with Spanish moss; a common sight in both Charleston & Savannah alike.

ARTWORK MULTIPLE MEDIUMS 2009-2012
Prior to attending Fanshawe College, I attended the University of Waterloo majoring in fine arts. I have always enjoyed working and creating things with my hands. In my senior years of highschool I started to gain confidence in my hand drawing abilties. Hand sketching had been a hobby of mine for many years, which led me to pursue fine arts in post secondary. A few pieces from my senior year of highschool, and some pieces from my time at UW are featured here. I’LL TEACH YOU, My sister and I Pencil & paper, 2009

I had collected, restored, edited and printed these family photos, among others not shown. Then, using multiple mediums, I directly transferred the photos onto pine wood “frames” that I had cut and sanded specially for each photo. By staining and then sealing, I achieved the antique look I had aimed for.

FOR THE LOVE OF TREES RESIDENTIAL GARDEN WITH YOGA STUDIO “THE FOREST”
PROJECT GOALS
• Create a private sanctuary through the use of sound barriers, all season planting, and decorative fencing. • Create a meditative space and pathway entrance • Add a multi-seasonal yoga pavilion, with outdoor class space • Deck space for clients with lots of shade & dining space • Create private arrival for clients and multi seasonal garden for street side presence
“THE GARDEN”
• Introduce all season path from front of house to yoga pavilion for yoga students The following project was completed during my second year at Fanshawe College. The mock clients wanted a small yoga studio in their backyard, but also wanted to be able to maintain their own private backyard space as well. Requirements included creating a public entrance for yoga students, a private entrance for the homeowners, a shaded deck area off of the house, a semi enclosed area for small dogs, improve curb appeal, minimize grass in the front yard, add a storage space, and to create maximum privacy from neighbours. The drawings to the left are my hand drafted concept plans. I felt there was strong benefits in each concept, and decided to bring the two concepts together to create the final master plan.

FIRST THINGS FIRST ENTRY LEVEL FRONT ENTRANCE
During my second term co-op at Fanshawe College, I worked as a Junior Landscape Designer for Landscape Architect, David A. Wright. This was the very first project I designed with David. I completed the grading, planting, and hardscape plans with his guidance and expertise. I was also given the opportunity to help install the plants with the construction crew. Experiencing this project start to finish, from designing to installing, and seeing the completed project was impactful and inspiring for me.

KEEP IT SIMPLE DESIGN & BUILD BEGINNINGS
This project was also completed during my co-op term at Wright Landscape Service Ltd. The small rear yard looked out on to farmers fields and forests. It was important to the client to maintain the views out, while also creating privacy from neighbours on either side. Low maintenance plantings with various blooming periods, and seasonal interest was a key design focus. While working and designing with David thoughout my co-op, I learned how important it was to consider the maintenance and longevity of the landscape, while also achieving the wishes of the client within the provided budget.

OUTSIDE THE BOX CONTEMPORARY WITH CONSTRAINTS This particular landscape project was challenging to complete because of the various project constraints. I think the most successful outcome of this design was the layout of spaces. Fitting all the wishlist items without crowding the yard was challenging to say the least. By compromising the size of the pool and the structure, all the wishlist items were able to fit into the small backyard. Toronto and Region Conservation Authority has strict hardscape and grading setback restrictions required at the rear of this property. For this reason we were required to challenge some of our design choices to the Conservation Authority. Thankfully, Pro-Land was granted permission to construct this project in mid-April of 2016. I believe the biggest weak point of this design is the lack of green space. I would have liked to see more gardens and trees planted within the hardscape area. Unfortunately, this was not a priority of the clients, and therefore was not included. However, because the property backs onto a wetland conservation, the raised level patio provides a wonderful view of the vast forests and green space directly behind the property. Project Budget: $350,000

BODY AND SOIL
DESIGNING FOR REHABILITATION & RECOVERY During my final year at Fanshawe, our studio course focused on creating therapeutic and rehabilitative landscapes. The following project was completed by myself and three other group members. Our group to chose focus on the Rehabilitation wing of Owen Sound General Hospital. The building, which is separate from the main hospital, provided a unique opportunity to create multiple different spaces surrounding the building. The building contained an Ob-Gyn & Pediatric wing, Out Patient Mental Health wing, Inpatient Rehabilitation, Physiotheraphy, and an Occupational Therapy wing. Each of these wings would require different focuses for the landscapes to be as beneficial as possible to the patients. We separated the site into four sections which allowed each group member to design their own space independently, with the feedback and input of the entire group throughout. The space I focused on was for the Out Patient Mental Health wing. I wanted to create a space that allowed users to reflect in nature, interact with nature, and enjoy the views of nature. I designed a simple meandering pathway from the building exit that would provide users with a sense of discovery as they are forced to enter the space slowly and therefore begin to intake their surroundings more acutely. I designed a cabana near the building exit that provided full shade, as well as a partially shaded pergola within the courtyard space. Next, I proposed a space that users could interact with nature. Multiple accessible raised garden boxes allow patients to sit, stand, or rest on the ground as they plant annuals, cultivate vegetables or tend to plants. Additionally, two small green houses allow interaction with plants to continue into the colder months, as well as provide space for independant, or group activities and lessons. Finally, I incorporated a dense planted “forest” space, with meandering pathways, deck platforms, and seating space. This was intended to provide users with a space to wander, reflect, and walk. The dense trees provide a sense of security and exploration, while connecting users with nature. The raised platforms also provide a space for group reflection or gatherings.

POWER TO THE PARK

TORONTO ISLAND PROVINCIAL PARK
The following was completed as my final graduating project from Fanshawe College in 2015. Project requirements were relatively open ended. Specific deliverables were limited to a detailed, fully labelled, rendered master plan, with auto-cad use. Given that during my time at Fanshawe, we had completed multiple projects that focused on residential design and institutional design, I wanted to take this opportunity to explore a different area of design - large scale public design. The Toronto Islands have always been a place of interest to me. The Islands offer a completely unique urban setting, unlike anything else in south western Ontario, and arguably the world. The island has a lot to offer to visitors and residents alike with its combination of residential space, public parks & services, and natural environments. However, after conducting further research into the island, its amenities, existing infrastructure, and landscape, I was inspired to recreate and improve the space. The close proximity to downtown Toronto provides a wonderful opportunity to connect the dense urban infrastructure of downtown to a natural, accessible and functional landscape for users. With Tommy Thompson Park nearby, it was not necessary to suggest a naturalized environment, but rather a space that connects urban life to nature, with a specific interest in providing opportunites for frequent human interaction with nature. By incorporating various bike trails, boardwalks, bridges, and promenades, my design provides the users with a connection through the site, and to nature, without negatively impacting the environment. My design heavily focused on pedestrian access, environmentally sensitive infrastructure, and naturalized landscapes. INSPIRATIONAL PHOTOS & PROJECTS

I completed these structural detail drawings for a project with Pro-Land Landscape Construction in 2015. Construction of this structure began in April 2016, and is to be completed by June 2016. The cabana pergola combination boasts multiple features that will provide a space where the homeowners can truly “live outdoors”. The finished structure will contain: 1.Outdoor kitchen: complete with bbq, pizza oven, sink, fridge, a beer keg fridge and tap. 2.Dining space: shaded with automatic roll shades on the pergola rafters. 3.Living space: protected underneath the cabana roof, a gas fireplace heats the space for the fall months. 4.Washroom: featuring a shower, toilet and sink. The various features of this structure required multiple detail drawings. Starting with the structural design, followed with the kitchen layout design, and bathroom finishings, and finally, the custom precast fireplace design. Each major item required details for installation and construction. Structure Budget: $75,000

This contemporary cabana, proposed for a suburban home in Maple, Ontario, features a gas firepit, a TV wall, two natural stone seat walls, and a coffered ceiling. The crezon board clad on the pillars and coffered ceiling create a clean and uniform look. The intricate pillar details and unique ledge cut natural stone TV wall add interest not just to the structure, but to the entire backyard. The roof framing design was inspired by existing architectural elements on the house. Incoporating these small, yet specific details in the cabana, compliments the architectural aesthetic of the home, and ties the two structures together. The major challenges of this design were determining how to accurately clad the cabana posts. It was important to me as the designer to correctly execute the proposed pillar design that had been shown to the clients in the conceptual images.
