We spoke to the founder, Will Miller to find out how it all started, where it is going and what he is most proud of... HM: So first things first, who are you and what do you do? W: I'm Will Miller, I handle a lot of the general day to day at Tiny Engines...press, mailorder, social media, etc. etc. How did Tiny Engines start? I've just always wanted to start a record label. I met Chuck Daley when we both worked at Deep Elm Records. We eventually left Deep Elm and he started his own press III
company, Beartrap PR, which I eventually joined as well. And then in 2008 I was able to sucker Chuck in to taking the label plunge with me. What would you say is your favourite release from the Tiny Engines catalogue? Too hard of a question to answer really as we really love everything we put out. But, I would say Dikembe's Broad Shoulders LP and Restorations self-titled LP have been two of our more important releases. What was the first record that made you truly fall in love with music? How did it make you feel? IV
“Nirvana's ‘Nevermind’ definitely changed my whole perspective on music.” Might sound cliche, but probably Nirvana's Nevermind as it definitely changed my whole perspective on music and led me down into the underground to discover Punk Rock in general. What was the last song you listened to? Well, I just listened to the new Palms record (members of Isis and Deftones), really enjoying that album a lot lately. Have you got any plans for the near future? Oh, we’ve got tons of plans, we're finishing off the Summer with the release of the Little Big League LP and Springtime 7", and then in the Fall we'll be releasing 3 LPs, Signals Midwest, Save Ends and The Hotel Year. There's also the Direct Effect LP that will either be late 2013 or early 2014. And we've got two new 2014 releases to announce soon as well. We are staying busy! Seven Bands You Poor Little Buggers Missed Out On W
e don’t mean to sound big-headed, but we listened to a lot a cracking music when we were growing up. So to help you make up for lost time we’ve put together a list of seven bands that you might have missed... Refused You’re so caught up in what’s happening now that you’ve never taken the time to appreciate where it all started. If it wasn’t for this band then most modern Punk bands wouldn’t exist. Listen to: ‘New Noise’ The Blood Brothers Perhaps one of the most intense bands of the past 15 years. If you’ve never heard of them, you’re seriously missing out. Listen to: ‘Trash Flavoured Trash’ The Starting Line The last truly great Pop-punk band from the golden age. They were never given the respect they deserved thanks to money hungry recorded labels, and their re-union just isn’t the same. Listen to: ‘Three’s A Charm’ > VIII
The Riverclub A lost gem from the British scene. Whilst all of you were too busy listening to You Me At Six, you failed to notice that there were other bands doing it much better. Listen to: ‘My Girl, God She Is Beautiful’ Head Wound City The greatest super group of all time featuring some of the most interesting Punk musicians of our generation. They may only have recorded seven songs, but we can guarantee they are better than your favorite bands entire discography. Listen to: ‘Prick Class’ Cutting Pink With Knives Imagine all your favorite songs being mashed into one, played ten times faster, and then pushed into a cosmic storm filled with synths and drum machines. ‘Listen to: Didi Got Fisted At The Smiths Disco’ Reuben Best.Band.EVER. Listen to: ‘Return Of The Jedi’ HM IX
Introducing... Speedy Ortiz Whilst hunting for a master’s degree in poetry, Sadie Dupuis started something wonderful. Named after a minor character in the Love And Rockets comic series, Speedy Ortiz began as a self-recorded lo-fi project that soon developed into so much more. The bands debut album, Major Arcana is a tuneful Pop record that is delightfully distorted and eloquently awkward. Listen to: ‘No Below’
Sarah Siskind Bon Iver approved, Nashville-based singer songwriter Sarah Siskind is what you might call a ‘diamond in the rough’. Her stunning voice, mixed with an abundance of wonderfully creative melodies and beautiful lyrics surely cements her place as one of the finest female musicians around today. Listen to: ‘Keep Me Trying’ X
