Going to Haiti Tips Before You Go, Getting There, and While You Are There By Sandra Chan
H
AITI IS GAINING POPULARITY AS A TOURIST DESTINATION, AND IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING TAKING A SUMMER VACATION TO THIS LITTLE GEM IN THE CARIBBEAN, HERE ARE SOME TIPS AND TRICKS THAT WILL MAKE YOUR TRIP SMOOTH AND STRESS-FREE.
BEFORE YOU GO
1
2
Know what you want to do. Before you book your trip to Haiti, ask yourself what you want to do while you are there. If you prefer a Haitian resort experience, then you may want to head to La Côte des Arcadins, where you can enjoy the beaches and water sports. On the other hand, if you would like to learn more about the Haitian culture, then you may enjoy checking out the French colonial era architecture and colorful carnival in the city of Jacmel.
Hunt for the best deal. Check out all the hotels and resorts listed on HaitiOpen.com to see if they offer any discounted rates. Many hotels offer early bird specials for guests who book in advance. Even if you don’t see any advertised discounts on the hotel/ resort listing page, you can contact each hotel and resort to see if they can offer you a deal if you stay multiple nights.
HaitiOpen.com | Fall 2016
3
Budget your activities. If you already know which attractions you’ll be visiting, you can check out their prices and opening hours in advance. If you can’t find the info online, contact your hotel or resort and they can usually help you out. If there are activities that you want to participate in, you may book in advance as sometimes you can get a better rate if you pre-book them. In addition, if you plan to use your credit cards on your trip, make sure that they are accepted.
4 5
Charge your electronic devices. If you plan to travel with your electronic devices, including your cell phone, tablet, laptop computer, or camera, charge them beforehand. If you have an extra battery for your camera, bring it.
Share your plan. Share your travel plan to Haiti with someone at home and make sure that they have a way to contact you in case of emergency.

GETTING THERE
6
7
Arrange for transportation. If you’ve never been to Haiti before and don’t speak the language, it is best for you to arrange for airport pickup. Most resorts and hotels in Haiti can pick you up at the airport for a fee. If you are a bit more adventurous and would like to have your own transportation while you are in Haiti, you can rent a car at the airport. You can find car rental companies such as Hertz, Avis and Budget at the airport. Don’t forget to provide the car rental company with your OpenExperience Points voucher from your HaitiOpen.com for discounts.
Wait in the airport. If your hotel is picking you up at the airport, wait at the designated area in the airport until your driver arrives.
WHILE YOU ARE THERE Check in at the hotel. When you check in at the hotel, ask about additional fees on top of

your room rate. Some hotels may charge extra for amenities such as Wi-Fi, telephone calls, bottled water, and snacks. Make sure that you know about all the fees or you may be surprised when you receive your bill. You may be able to negotiate with the hotel to waive some of the fees if you stay for multiple nights. Check the hotel’s loyalty program, and you can use your OpenExperience Points vouchers for discounts.
Check in with people at home. Once you have checked in at your hotel, it’s time to check in with your friends and family at home. Let them know that you are safe.
10
Exchange for local currency. It’s always handy to have local currency with you, and most hotels offer currency exchange service. It’s also a good idea to ask your hotel about places where you can exchange money safely in case you run out of local currency while you’re out.
11
Tip like a pro. When people provide you with good services, don’t forget to tip them. A simple gesture of appreciation can make someone’s day.
12
Enjoy your stay. Go ahead and enjoy your activities as planned. If you want to take part in an unplanned activity, check with your hotel to make sure that it is safe. Also, let your family back home know about the change in itinerary.
13
.Review. Leave reviews on HaitiOpen.com. Your reviews will help other travelers have a better experience when visiting Haiti.

SNORKELING off the Shores of Haiti
By Megan Collier
With an incredibly rich and lively marine system throughout the waters of Haiti, snorkeling gives you a chance to get a closer look at numerous vibrant and colorful species just yards away from the shore. Unlike other activities where you may possibly have to join a large group and spend all day on a massive boat, snorkeling allows you to head into the waters whenever you please.
HaitiOpen.com | Fall 2016
A FUN FAMILY WATER SPORT For families traveling with children, snorkeling is absolutely ideal and the best option for those families looking to spend some time together and create lasting memories. There are plenty of resorts, stores and shops that visitors can either rent out or purchase snorkel masks at a very reasonable price.
Of course for those hoping to make an entire day out of it, boat excursions through resorts located in La Côte des Arcadins offer trips that will have you exploring different parts of the ocean, fishing ports and of course allow for you to jump in and snorkel around the boat. On all of the excursions you will find throughout the area, snorkel masks and gear are always provided by the company making your experience much more relaxed and stress-free.
Cote Des Arcadins reamteaminternational org
For those planning a trip to Haiti, during the summer, chances are you are hoping and looking forward to diving right into that crystal clear Caribbean water you have seen pictures of and dreamt of for quite some time now. Though scuba diving is an option to get a little deeper, the perfect alternative for those that don’t feel quite as comfortable with that is throwing on a snorkel mask and heading right out in front of your resort.
“Snorkeling Is The Easiest Way to Explore Under Water Haiti” For those who choose to spend most of their days at beach clubs found at La Côte des Arcadins, you can get the best of both worlds and in between swimming and drinking at the pool bars, head out to the ocean with a snorkel mask and explore the wonders underneath the surface. Many of the resorts and beach clubs are often mere yards away from the sandy beach shores and provide great snorkeling options for their guests. Not only is snorkeling a fun and exciting water sport to do while in Haiti, it is also something for the more budget travelers who aren’t looking to spend a ton of money on activities. Snorkeling in Haiti is something that gives you the chance to explore some of the Caribbean’s most beautiful and breathtaking creatures and marine life all within an arms reach.

How Andy Jean turned setbacks into opportunities – and success By Sarah Brutus @sarahprworldwide
Q
Where were you born?
I was born in Nassau, Bahamas. That’s where I started grade school. I came to the United States in the late ’80s.
Q
Where did you go to school in South Florida?
I went North Miami Senior High, and in my first year I began to get into some trouble. Haitians weren’t really respected at that time in Miami, so it was a constant fight whenever you identified yourself as Haitian. That’s when my parents decided to send me to Haiti, and that’s where I finished high school.
Q
What was it like moving to Haiti as a teenager and going for the first time?
Everything that I took for granted here in the U.S., as hard and as hostile of an environment it was in Miami, was still better than quality of living experienced by many people in Haiti. Things in the States – such as free lunches or being able to jump on the school bus, electricity, all of that stuff – I took for granted.
Q
What was the experience like in Haiti?
While living in Haiti, I experienced a lot of things, including political unrest. I was in Haiti when the Embargo was imposed, and for the first time I experienced poverty. If I HaitiOpen.com | Fall 2016
had money, it often came down to whether I would eat that day and walk to school, or if I would walk that day so I could eat. Haiti was a truly humbling experience.
Q
When did you return to the United States?
Well, from Haiti I went back to Nassau, Bahamas. I started to attend college there at a small Christian school called Galilee College. I came back to the U.S. in about 1998. I was about 19 years old.
Q
What was it like coming back to the United States?
When coming back to the U.S., I had a lot of fears, including the fear that everyone in my age group would be much more advanced than me. So it propelled me be focused and to work hard to get to where I needed to be.
Q
How did you get into starting your business?
Starting my own business was really a result of me not being able to work. I came on a visa, and I didn’t have documents to work. So I had to become a hustler per se and figure out ways to make money. I started school at FIU, but I couldn’t finish school because I was an international student and the cost of attendance for a nonresident was about three times the cost of regular admission.
By the age of 26, I owned about ten properties.
Q
What was your first job in the U.S.?
I started working for this clinic doing marketing and promotions for them. The owner at the time took a liking to my skills, and eventually I was

Q
What did you do next after you started gaining ownership in the clinics?
I started to invest it into properties. By the age of 26, I owned about ten properties. Everything was good until 2008, when the housing crash happened. We lost millions of dollars. After that I went into doing taxes, which also grew exponentially. This opened doors to other opportunities. I started my software company, which makes accounting software that is doing very well and being sold and used across the country. Lastly, while doing taxes, I discovered the need for credit empowerment with my clients. So I began studying credit
and its dynamics. I traveled across the country to workshops and meetings with different bankers to truly understand the credit system in the U.S.
Q
One last thing that I would say to anyone is to believe in yourself.
What is South Beach Funding?
I got into it because a lot of people around me needed help to borrow money for businesses. So, now knowing how to get credit, I was tailoring credit for these loans that allowed them to get their businesses off the ground. This has allowed these people to make a difference in the community.
Q
Did you know your businesses would do so well?
God has blessed me where my companies are bringing in about one million dollars a year. I have over
15 employees, some of whom have been working with me for over eight years. We have an office in Louisiana that’s also fully staffed and doing well.
Q
What has been the hardest part of running your business over the past couple of years?
The hardest part, and something that I deal with every day, is how every decision I make or move that I make can affect the company and the people that have bought into my vision and rely on my companies for their livelihood. The second hardest part I have found is how uninformed our community is. I’m not just speaking about Haitians, but the black community as a whole, and even the white community when it comes to finances. I ask myself, if this system exists, why is it not publicly provided or a required course in school?
Q
What has been your biggest accomplishment in business?
I think my biggest accomplishment is the people who I have been able to influence and see become successful in their own right. That is amazing to me, and makes me very proud.
Q
@smittyiproduce
able to gain ownership in one of the clinics, which then led to ownership in multiple clinics. That’s when things started to happen for me.
Any final advice?
Surround yourself with good people. That’s key. Don’t be the smartest person in the room all the time. If you are, then you need a new circle. Saturate yourself with positive energy, and don’t be afraid to walk away from people who don’t share your vision. HaitiOpen.com | Fall 2016
