AND JUST LIKE THAT, 2024 IS OVER HERE AT POLO LIFESTYLES. THE ICING ON OUR CAKE – THE ANNUAL HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE – HAS BEEN PERFECTED AND THE CAKE IS READY TO BE PUT ON A CRYSTAL PLATTER TO BE SERVED.

The last three weeks for me have involved countless flights, jet lag, much-need days at the beach, an unexpected medical emergency (it’s fine, now), three birthday parties, Thanksgiving, coming back to the office just in time to approve and edit the December issue and not nearly enough sleep in the last few days. The Polo Lifestyles team came together to make this year’s Gift Guide truly one for the history books. From the bottom of my heart, all I can say is, Thank you.

As we’re simultaneously launching this holiday issue and preparing for the holidays in all manner of ways, it’s occurred to me how incredibly fortunate I am and how many things for which I am deeply grateful. So if you see me out and about this holiday season, I am going to try to go out of my way to wish you a Happy Holidays, a Merry Christmas, a joyful Hanukkah, you name it! Expressions of gratitude don’t come naturally to me, so practicing that is my mantra for the next 30 days.

For starters, I am grateful for you, at home or at work or in the car, reading this. It means that somehow we’ve connected in a way that transcends the digital pages of a magazine. You’ve allowed me into your life and for that, I want to say Thank you.

Is Easier THAN YOU THINK BUYING A PRIVATE ISLAND

From the Caribbean to New York’s Hudson Valley, having your own secluded getaway doesn’t have to be a fantasy

FEW THINGS ARE AS GLAMOROUS AS OWNING AN ISLAND— JUST ASK RICHARD BRANSON, FAITH HILL, OR JOHNNY DEPP, ALL OF WHOM PADDED THEIR REAL ESTATE PORTFOLIOS WITH SUCH SECLUDED PROPERTIES. THE NUMBER ONE LURE? “PRIVACY,” SAYS CHRIS KROLOW, CEO OF GLOBAL BROKERAGE PRIVATE ISLANDS INC., THE INDUSTRY’S LEADING SPECIALIST. “THESE BUYERS ARE LOOKING FOR THEIR OWN LITTLE KINGDOM WHERE THERE’S NO TRAFFIC AND THEY CAN’T SEE THEIR NEIGHBORS.”

But you don’t need celebrity-level wealth to enjoy a slice of paradise. While the priciest of the world’s roughly 200 available islands can top nine figures, some can be found for under $100,000—if you know where to look. Krolow’s website, along with Vladi Private Islands, offers a good start, as do worldwide brokerages like Sotheby’s and Christie’s, which have dedicated island portfolios.

The next step is to zero in on a location. Krolow cautions against buying in much of Asia (excluding Thailand) and the South Pacific due to pervasive leasehold laws that prevent land from being purchased outright. Freehold islands, meanwhile, generally appreciate in value and can be found throughout the U.S., Canada, and corners of the Caribbean,

including English-speaking countries like Belize and the Bahamas. In addition, lake islands usually go for less than those in the ocean; plus, they aren’t susceptible to salt water’s corrosive effects.

Ostensibly prized for their endless potential, undeveloped parcels should be avoided because they require a slew

of costly permits, environmental assessments, and extensive infrastructure planning. Makeup mogul François Nars, for instance, told Vogue that he and design firm Studio Liaigre faced “every challenge that you can imagine and more” to create a Tahitian fantasy on an untouched atoll in Bora-Bora.

“The best places,” says Krolow, “have an existing home with a good footprint, so you don’t need to worry about reinventing the wheel.” One such listing is the heart-shaped Petra Island in the Hudson Valley, which boasts two Frank Lloyd Wright–designed residences, the larger of which was completed posthumously by its owner, Joseph Massaro. The ten-acre isle

even features a helipad, making it possible to reach Manhattan in 20 minutes.

“It still surprises me how beautiful this place is,” says Massaro of the wooded compound. “I notice new things every day.” Island time, it turns out, might not be that far off after all.

Why Your Heart Beats in Sync with Music

MUSIC IS A POWERFUL FORCE THAT HAS THE ABILITY TO EVOKE EMOTIONS, STIR MEMORIES, AND CREATE CONNECTIONS.

Beyond its artistic and cultural significance, music has a profound impact on our physiological responses, particularly our heartbeats.

This article delves into the fascinating world of how music rhythms and heart rhythms intertwine, influencing our emotions and overall well-being.

We will journey through the intricate relationship between music and heart rate, examining how different music genres can affect our mood and physiology.

THE RHYTHMS OF LIFE: HEARTBEATS AND EMOTIONS

At the core of our exploration is the intricate interplay between the rhythm in music and the rhythm of your heart. The human heart, governed by the autonomic nervous system, responds not only to physical exertion but also to emotional cues. Music, with its rhythmic patterns and emotive melodies, has the power to modulate heart rate and evoke a range of emotions. Scientific studies have shown that listening to certain types of music can lead to changes in heart rate variability — a measure of the variation in time between successive heartbeats. This variability is linked to emotional states, showcasing the undeniable link between music and the heart.

THE ANATOMY OF RHYTHMS: MUSIC and HEART SYNCHRONIZATION

To understand how heartbeats and music can sync, it’s essential to understand the anatomy of music rhythms. Music is composed of various elements, including tempo (or speed) and beats per minute (BPM).

These elements align with the human desire to synchronize body movements with musical beats — or as we commonly know it, dancing! This natural synchronization extends to the heart, resulting in an entrainment effect where heart rate aligns with the rhythm of the music. This intriguing phenomenon underscores the deep-rooted connection between the auditory and cardiovascular systems.

GENRES, MOOD, AND HEART RATE

The intricate relationship between music and human emotions has long fascinated researchers. While individual songs can move us powerfully, the effect of music also extends to genre. At a meta level, musical genres can affect us differently due to the different spectrum of feelings they evoke within us. Let’s look at just a few:

CLASSICAL AND RELAXATION: THE SYMPHONY OF SERENITY

Classical music, characterized by its timeless compositions and elegant melodies, has a distinct ability to invoke a sense of serenity and inner calm. The slower tempos and harmonious arrangements often found in classical pieces create a sonic environment conducive to relax-

ation. As listeners immerse themselves in the soothing sounds of acoustic wood and brass instruments, heart rates tend to decrease. The gentle cadence of the music aligns with the body’s natural rhythms, leading to a state of tranquility. In a world that often thrives on rapidity, the unhurried melodies of classical music offer a reprieve — a melodic journey to a place of serenity.

Even when classical music is stirring, crashing, and upbeat, the emotions evoked are not those of adrenaline and anger, but of excitement and adventure — think The Ride of the Rohirrim from The Lord of the Rings versus Ultrasonic Sound from the Matrix.

Both are designed to create energy, but we inherently experience them quite differently.

UPBEAT AND POP: THE MELODIC UPLIFT

The vibrant world of upbeat and pop genres is characterized by vivacious tempos and infectious melodies. Songs like Chandelier by Sia have the uncanny ability to infuse listeners with a surge of energy and positive emotions. Fastpaced beats and catchy rhythms trigger a cascade of neural responses that translate into feelings of happiness and excitement. It’s no wonder that pop music often finds its place as the soundtrack to celebrations and joyous occasions. As the heart synchronizes with the energetic cadence of the music, heart rates may experience a temporary elevation — a rhythmic embodiment of the exuberance these genres evoke.

ROCK: THE SONIC JOURNEY OF REBELLION AND RESONANCE

Rock stands as a testament to rebellion, self-expression, and raw emotion. The genre’s electrifying guitar riffs, powerful vocals, and dynamic rhythms create a sonic landscape that mirrors the complexities of human feelings. Rock music has the uncanny ability to evoke a range of emotions, from introspective contemplation to spirited rebellion.

Rock’s diversity is its strength, with subgenres ranging from classic rock and alternative to punk and indie. Each subgenre brings its unique sonic elements to the table, resulting in a vast spectrum of emotional experiences. The sheer passion embedded in rock’s DNA has the potential to quicken heart rates, igniting a surge of energy and enthusiasm. Whether it’s the poetic lyrics of classic rock ballads or the unapologetic energy of punk anthems, rock music’s impact on heart rate is undeniable.

HEAVY METAL AND INTENSITY: AMPLIFYING EMOTIONS

The world of heavy metal is synonymous with intensity — a genre that resonates with those seeking emotional release and a visceral experience.

Characterized by aggressive rhythms, thunderous instrumentals, and powerful vocals, songs like Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelen are a conduit for catharsis. The loud and intense sounds trigger an adrenaline response, evoking a wide range of emotions from exhilaration to empowerment. This emotional intensity can manifest in an increase in heart rate — an automatic physiological response to the emotional and auditory onslaught.

For many, heavy metal serves as an emotional outlet, allowing listeners to navigate the complexities of their feelings through the music’s dynamic intensity.

AMBIENT AND ELECTRONIC: SONIC TRANQUILITY

Ambient and electronic genres offer a distinct sonic landscape that differs significantly from their counterparts. Music from artists like Brian Eno fosters a trance-like environment that encourages a state of relaxation and mental introspection. The gentle electronic pulses and evolving soundscapes provide a backdrop for contemplation and unwinding. As listeners become enveloped in these sonic textures, heart rates can gradually lower, mirroring the gradual unfolding of the music. It’s a sonic journey that parallels the easing of tension within the body, offering a pathway to inner calm.

THE THERAPEUTIC POTENTIAL OF MUSIC ON HEART HEALTH

Beyond its emotional and physiological effects, music has shown remarkable potential in promoting heart health. The burgeoning field of music therapy is

exploring how specific genres can aid in stress reduction, blood pressure regulation, and overall cardiovascular well-being. Scientific studies have illuminated the role of music in alleviating anxiety and depression, indirectly benefiting heart health. By integrating music into holistic approaches to health, we unlock a sonic pathway to well-being.

In conclusion, the harmonious synchronization of heartbeats and music is a testament to the interconnectedness of the human experience. As we navigate through the rhythms of life, music stands as a universal language that speaks to our hearts and souls. Whether it’s the serene notes of classical compositions, the lively beats of pop anthems, or the powerful chords of heavy metal, music orchestrates a symphony within us that transcends time and space. It’s a reminder that our heartbeats are not only our life’s rhythm but also a dance with the melodies that move us.

The 35th Annual Hadrian Gala Graces the New York Public Library

THE WORLD MONUMENTS FUND (WMF)—THE PREEMINENT ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO PRESERVING GLOBAL CULTURAL LANDMARKS—CELEBRATED ITS 35TH ANNUAL HADRIAN GALA AT THE HISTORIC STEPHEN A. SCHWARZMAN BUILDING OF THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY.

The evening highlighted the remarkable contributions of architect

The Challenge to Save the Caribbean's Native Species

PHILANTHROPISTS

PATIENTLY WAIT 12 MONTHS FOR THE PHENOMENON KNOWN AS YEAREND GIVING. THE HOLIDAY SEASON REMAINS A PARTICULARLY APPEALING TIME FOR ASKING AND, IN TURN, RECEIVING SUBSTANTIAL GIFTS TO PUT TOWARD INITIATIVES AND OPERATIONS FOR THE COMING YEAR.

Year-end giving, however; is neither democratic nor equitable for all charities, foundations and organizations. Giving patterns are not predictable and when dollars are down, the ripple effects can reach around the world and into the homes and shelters of the world’s most-desperate geographies. This year, particularly in Haiti, organizations are suffering under the duel crush of gangbased violence and international pressure to cut off the flow of aid into the country until a semblance of order can be restored. Meanwhile, Haiti’s population will suffer; of that, there is no doubt.

From the traditionally well-funded, large-scale programs to smaller collectives focused on low-access, high-risk service delivery, we’re not talking about who’s getting an iPhone for Christmas; rather, who will go back to school in January, what will be planted, harvested and sold in the marketplace; will the tree in the front yard be chopped down to make charcoal?

The answer to that last question is near and dear to the heart of Haiti National Trust’s executive director, Anne-Isabelle Bonifassi. “Every day, millions of Haitians depend on forests, clearing land for agriculture, grazing, urbanization, and charcoal, but this reliance is driving the rapid loss of forests and biodiversity,” she said when we spoke over the phone. Deforestation is a massive problem in a country fraught with difficult access to stable (not to even mention renewable) energy sources. Hand-in-hand with deforestation, Haiti, a rich biodiversity hotspot in the Caribbean, is home to thousands of native and endemic species, including more than 500 plants and animals (280 plants and 233 animals) now threatened with extinction—numbers that are increasing at an alarming rate.

Haiti National Trust, under Bonifassi’s guidance, is dedicated to saving and protecting Haiti’s biodiversity for future generations by restoring and safeguarding high biodiversity hotspots across the country. Working closely with local communities, the organization reforested over 60 hectares and actively protects 370 hectares within Grand Bois National Park, located precariously on the Massif de la Hotte, at the western tip of the Tiburon peninsula. Read: hard to access.

Haiti’s natural and difficult geography, which proved helpful to rebellious slaves who hid in the vast ranges to plan and

launch attacks against Napoleon’s forces during the Haitian Revolution, is literally the last horizon on the path to save access to basic needs. As any natural environment is depleted, water sources dry up, animals seek shelter elsewhere, crops fail and people give up on the land. Bonifassi says “We are determined to change that, and with the right support, we can.”.

Bonifassi spoke to Polo Lifestyles from her office in Port-au-Prince, where she is now stranded since the FAA grounded air traffic into and out of the capital’s only international airport. From Port-auPrince, she manages and maintains close

communication with her team and field staff, who work on various project sites to ensure the successful implementation of activities. Despite the challenging conditions, their commitment has driven remarkable progress, showcasing the resilience and impact of Haiti National Trust’s efforts.

“Growing up in multiple different countries, I have always loved nature, creatures and the environment… The species we fight to protect don’t recognize borders or care about politics—they can’t afford to wait for stability. The race to prevent them from going extinct is urgent, and our

GRAND BOIS, HAITI

work focuses on creating the conditions they need to thrive and ensuring their survival,” said Bonifassi. She makes it sound simple, but it requires park rangers, native plant nurseries, staff, logistics, security forces, administrators and a whole lot of technology to keep everyone connected. Simply put, it’s expensive to restore the ecosystem. But the alternative is a complete loss of native species within our lifetime. One of Haiti National Trust’s most significant and appreciated donors is Re:wild, founded by Leonardo DiCaprio. In the early days, their generosity provided a transformative investment that helped lay the foundation for Haiti National Trust’s work, and their continued support remains invaluable, said Bonifassi. She expressed deep gratitude for donors like Re:wild, whose vision aligns with Haiti National Trust’s goals, and highlighted the importance of remaining faithful to the organization’s mission. “I’ve learned to say ‘No’ to donors,” she added, referring to times when a donor’s objectives didn’t support the organization’s core values. She highlights examples of other biodiversity hotspots

where international organizations made significant investments in programs and activities. However, unresolved land tenure issues before the projects began and a limited understanding of the country, its people, and the underlying challenges led to significant obstacles, ultimately preventing these initiatives from achieving meaningful restoration.

So what actually works? Haiti National Trusts believes in understanding local communities, resolving land tenure challenges before projects begin, and partnering with the government through management delegation contracts. This collaborative approach, as demonstrated in Grand Bois, has been successful. By uniting efforts to restore forests, protect biodiversity, and support local communities, the organization is paving the way for a more sustainable future in Haiti. Bonifassi shares, “I am so proud to say that the work we’ve been doing has led to a profound transformation. The same people who once cut down trees and damaged the forests are now their most passionate protectors. It’s proof that, with

the right approach and the necessary funding, we can empower communities to take ownership of their natural heritage and create a lasting impact.”

In the end, Bonifassi defines success as the resilience and collaboration of communities working together to restore Haiti’s natural heritage.

By restoring forests and protecting biodiversity, Haiti National Trust is not only safeguarding endangered plants and animals or protecting primary forests but also building a foundation for a brighter, greener future for generations to come. “Every tree planted, every species saved, and every community empowered brings us closer to a thriving Haiti,” Bonifassi says. She emphasizes that with the right support, this vision is within reach and underscores the importance of preserving Haiti’s forests and wildlife as enduring treasures that inspire hope and pride for generations to come.

GRAND BOIS, HAITI

WHY WE LIE TO THOSE WE LOVE

After betrayal is discovered, continued secrets and lies are agony.

FOR MANY CHEATERS, THE IMMEDIATE AND SEEMINGLY BEST RESPONSE TO THE DISCOVERY OF THEIR BETRAYAL IS TO DIG IN WITH MORE SECRETS AND LIES, BUT THIS TIME TO DO IT MORE EFFECTIVELY. SO THEY CONTINUE TO KEEP SECRETS, THEY CONTINUE TO TELL LIES, AND SOMETIMES THEY EVEN CONTINUE THEIR INFIDELITY. FOR A TIME, MANY OF THEM EVEN GET AWAY WITH IT. IN SUCH CASES, THEY TEND TO THINK, “GREAT, PROBLEM SOLVED.”

Unfortunately, that is not how it works out over time. Relationship issues (all sorts, not just betrayal) are most definitely not solved by “getting away

with it.” Instead, relationship issues are simply swept under the rug and ignored until they can no longer be overlooked—usually because the cheater eventually gets caught (again) in this pattern of secrets, lies, and continued infidelity.

When this happens, of course, the condition of an already fragile relationship will deteriorate even further. And at that point, the only way forward is for the cheating partner to stop keeping secrets and telling lies. The good news is that trust can be rebuilt, and relationships can heal and maybe even become better than ever.

For that to happen, however, the secrets and lies must stop. For cheaters, that process starts when they stop lying to themselves.

DENIAL

When cheaters engage in denial, they lie to themselves about what they are

doing and the impact their behavior is currently having and might have in the future. They do this as a way to rationalize and justify their obviously hurtful behavior in their own mind. And then, over time, they come to believe their own lies. With that, the internal lies and deceits are externalized with lines like:

• If I had more/different/better sex at home, I wouldn’t need to cheat.

• All I’m doing is looking at a little bit of porn. Everyone does it, and nobody thinks it’s cheating.

• Sure, I go to strip clubs, but I never have sex with the workers.

• My entire world is take, take, take. Nobody appreciates me. So I deserve to have a little fun.

• What my partner doesn’t know can’t hurt him/her.

As stated above, cheaters come to believe their own lies, no matter how

outrageous. And with that, their behavior seems utterly reasonable to them in the moment of obsession. Sure, a betrayed partner and even an impartial observer can easily see through this smokescreen. But cheaters who want to continue cheating will still stick to their guns anyway. Often, it is only in a crisis (getting caught red-handed, for example) that cheaters will finally examine their denial and the reality of their behavior—and sometimes even that is not enough.

GASLIGHTING

Gaslighting is denial taken to such an extreme that it qualifies as a form of psychological abuse. When cheaters gaslight their partners, they present false information and insist that the information is true. Often, betrayed partners are blamed for misunderstanding a situation, causing a situation, or just being crazy. However it occurs, gaslighting flips the script on relationship strife by insisting that the

betrayed partner is at fault. The betrayed partner’s thinking and behavior are to blame, not the cheating.

• She’s just a coworker. When she calls here, it’s because we have a project to finish.

• Why are you always so jealous?

• Why do you keep asking me if something is going on? You’re completely paranoid. It’s really annoying.

• I would never do that. I don’t even look at other women.

• You’re just being crazy, and it really upsets me that you don’t trust me.

Over time, gaslighting causes betrayed partners to question their own reality. They start to wonder if maybe their perception of the situation really is askew, despite the ever-growing pile of evidence to the contrary.

Sadly, even the most intelligent and emotionally well-adjusted partners can be taken in by gaslighting. In part, this is because our tendency as human beings is to believe what the people we love tell us. At times, as a way of protecting our connection with a loved one, we will defend, excuse, and flat-out overlook their obviously problematic words and behaviors—especially when their lies and excuses seem sincere.

In larger part, a betrayed partner’s vulnerability to gaslighting is linked to the fact that gaslighting starts slowly and builds gradually over time. It’s like placing a frog in a pot of warm water that is then set to boil. Because the temperature increases only gradually, the innocent frog never even realizes it’s being cooked. In short, lies start small and are believable, growing slowly over time into whoppers that the betrayed partner has been conditioned to believe.

HOPE CAN BE MORE POWERFUL THAN MINDFULNESS

IN DIFFICULT TIMES, A FORWARD-LOOKING MINDSET MAY BE ESPECIALLY HELPFUL. IN TROUBLING TIMES, HOW DO WE MOVE FORWARD? WHAT MINDSETS HELP US BOUNCE BACK FROM ADVERSITY?

When the world ground to a halt because of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, few industries felt the impact quite like the performing arts. Venues shuttered and crowds dispersed. Musicians, actors and production crews faced an unprecedented challenge: they needed to stay resilient despite the fact that their livelihood had vanished overnight.

Along with my colleagues at Clemson University and North Carolina State University, I wanted to explore what helps people persevere through such moments, so we partnered with MusiCares, a nonprofit that supports music industry professionals, to study how artists maintained their resilience during the pandemic’s darkest days. We were particularly interested in two mental approaches: mindfulness (being present and aware in the moment) and hopefulness (believing in and working toward a better future). In

psychology, these concepts can be used to describe a general state of being, one that reflects both personality (some people are naturally more mindful or hopeful) and actions, such as regularly practicing meditation to improve one’s focus on the present. Many researchers also view mindfulness as a metacognitive process, that is, something that enables people to consciously monitor and modulate their attention, emotions and behaviors to attend to the current moment in an open and curious, nonjudgmental way. Hope, meanwhile, functions as a future-oriented state that helps people to reflect on one’s perceived ability to generate pathways around challenges.

Mindfulness—a buzzword in wellness circles—might seem to be the obvious key to weathering a storm such as the pandemic. After all, staying grounded in the present moment seems like a good way to avoid spiraling into anxiety about an uncertain future. But our research tells a different, somewhat surprising story. Although mindfulness is a powerful tool for well-being, it does have limitations—and learning to cultivate a hopeful mindset is another critical strategy.

Our study followed 247 performers for 18 months, much of which was spent in lockdown. We asked them about their

mindset and well-being at different stages of the pandemic. As part of this effort, we gathered data through questionnaires that we sent out in 2021. People told us about their early experiences of the pandemic and their level of work-related tension and resilience. We also asked them about how much they agreed with various statements related to mindfulness or hopefulness in relation to the pandemic specifically. A higher state-of-mindfulness score suggested someone working to maintain awareness of their experiences in a nonjudgmental way, and a higher hopefulness state indicated someone who was actively envisioning potential solutions to pandemic-related obstacles. This allowed us to assess people’s mental strategies and better understand how each approach had helped people navigate the unprecedented challenges of COVID-19.

We found, unsurprisingly, that these artists were indeed adversely affected by COVID-19’s challenges. More intriguingly, we did not find evidence that mindfulness was particularly helpful to them as a pandemic coping strategy. Although it wasn’t harmful, it also didn’t significantly help artists bounce back or stay engaged with their work during this prolonged period of stress.

Instead hope was the real superstar. Those

Clinging to hope could be more effective than practicing mindfulness this holiday season

who maintained a hopeful outlook reported higher levels of work-related resilience and engagement, even as their industry remained in limbo. They were also more likely to experience positive emotions, which in turn boosted their ability to cope with the ongoing crisis. Hopefulness also contributed to their ability to stay productive by exploring new ways to deliver their craft, such as virtual performances and online collaborations.

A few things may help to explain this finding. First, mindfulness requires effort. And in periods of substantial or prolonged stress, people may lack the mental energy to effectively engage in self-calming techniques. In line with that, one study found that people struggle with mindfulness techniques when they lack quality sleep.

are, without any belief that they can get better, it’s hard to find the motivation to keep going.

This doesn’t mean mindfulness is pointless—it just might not be the best tool for every situation. When researchers pooled together data from 23 other studies of mindfulness in the workplace, they discovered that even though this mindset helped people with anxiety and distress in general, it did not have clear benefits for problems such as job-related burnout.

better future. All of these practices can give you something to focus on beyond your current circumstances.

Our study found that hope worked in part by increasing positive emotions, which in turn boosted resilience. That means that harnessing the power of positive emotions—by making time to engage in activities you enjoy, connect with loved ones or practice gratitude— can be essential to our tool kit for trying times.

Another factor to consider is what researchers call the “mindfulness paradox.” Although being present and aware can be incredibly helpful in many situations, it may actually backfire during extended periods of adversity. When your present reality is bleak and shows no signs of immediate improvement, too much focus on the “now” might leave you feeling stuck or overwhelmed. If you’re constantly aware of how bad things

Meanwhile, when you’re facing a prolonged, difficult situation—whether it’s unemployment, a health crisis or any other major life challenge—actively working to maintain hope can be a powerful coping strategy. Much as people are encouraged to practice mindfulness, they can also benefit from cultivating hope. This doesn’t mean indulging in blind optimism but rather having belief that things can improve, coupled with the motivation to work toward that improvement.

To put this into practice, try journaling about what you’d most like to do in the future. To combine thinking with action, connect with others to share those hopes and create a strategy, setting small, achievable goals to move you toward a

The key takeaway here isn’t that mindfulness is useless or that hope is a magic bullet. Different strategies work for different challenges. And particularly in dark times, when the present feels unbearable and the future uncertain, cultivating hope can give us the push we need to keep going. It provides a light at the end of the tunnel, even when we can’t see the full path forward.

As we navigate uncertainty and face new challenges, we can take a cue from the resilient artists in our study. By nurturing hope, setting our sights on a better future and taking small steps to get there, we can find the strength to persevere through even the toughest of times. And who knows? We might just emerge on the other side stronger and more resilient than ever before.

LUXE SKI RESORTS WE LOVE

YOU COULD EASILY ARGUE THAT SKIING, IN AND OF ITSELF, IS A LUXURY SPORT. THE GEAR IS EXPENSIVE, AS ARE ALL THE ASSOCIATED ACCOUTERMENTS LIKE SEASON PASSES AND LESSONS.

Some destinations take this foundational element and run with it, housing enormously fancy hotels with fine-dining opportunities to match. These are five of the most luxurious ski resorts in North America.

1. YELLOWSTONE CLUB, MONTANA

High-class lodging: The Yellowstone Club Who’s it for: Almost no one. The

Yellowstone Club is so exclusive that only the ultra-wealthy can gain access to it.

Talking about luxury and skiing—at least in the North American context—without mentioning the Yellowstone Club, a fully private ski resort in Montana, is impossible.

Known for being the stomping grounds of the elite, notable current and former

members of the Club include Justin Timberlake, Bill Gates, Tom Brady and Jessica Biel. The Yellowstone Club doesn’t share membership requirements, but in 2022, The San Francisco Standard reported that entrance fees cost $400,000, followed by $60,000 annual fees—and you need to purchase a property within the Club to become a member.

The high barrier to entry nets unfettered ski resort access with unparalleled service (according to an anonymous Club member who spoke with The Standard, concierge members will actively prevent you from carrying your own skis). These private slopes feature more than 100 runs across 2,900 acres—they say money can’t buy you happiness, but it can certainly help you avoid lift lines.

2. DEER VALLEY, UTAH

High-class lodging: Stein Eriksen Lodge, The St. Regis Deer Valley

Who’s it for: Groomer and glade hounds who appreciate the finer things in life.

Amongst the dense collection of Salt Lake City, Utah, area ski resorts, Deer Valley is often considered the most luxurious—with pristine groomed slopes and

numerous nearby five-star hotels, it’s easy to see why.

One of these establishments, the St. Regis, has its own funicular cable car that connects the Snow Park Residences with the upper resort building. The hotel’s reservable Wine Vault dining location houses a 10,000-plus bottle wine collection. Topnotch amenities don’t mean much if the skiing isn’t great, but Deer Valley has that

base covered, too.

Its already large terrain footprint—2,342 acres—will expand in the coming years to encompass a new base area, the East Village, eventually reaching 5,726 acres. For early risers, the resort offers exclusive mountain access between 8 am and 9 pm at the starting cost of $10,000 for up to 20 skiers. If riding the lifts with just you and your crew isn’t luxurious, we aren’t sure

what is.

3. ASPEN SNOWMASS, COLORADO

High-class lodging: The Little Nell

Who’s it for: Aspen can be over the top and a bit flashy, but that’s part of the fun—particularly if you have a penchant for people-watching.

Studded with multi-million dollar slopeside homes, numerous luxury stores (Moncler or Prada, anyone?), and a renowned music venue that draws popular headlining artists, Aspen, Colorado, is the pinnacle of skiing glitz and glamor.

Aspen Snowmass, the town’s ski area, covers four mountains—Buttermilk, Aspen Mountain, Highlands, and Snowmass— which, together, encompass over 5,700 acres of skiing, all accessible with a single lift ticket. At Highlands, the Cloud 9 Bistro is famed for its swanky champagne-spraying parties.

For ski-in ski-out access, there’s the Little Nell, a hotel established in 1989 that sees a rotating cast of upper-crust skiing clientele dressed in designer clothes. One

of the hotel’s restaurants, the Ajax Tavern, has a menu item that perfectly encapsulates Aspen’s blend of high luxury and ski culture: a Wagyu double cheeseburger.

4. VAIL MOUNTAIN, COLORADO

High-class lodging: Four Seasons Resort and Residences Vail, The Arrabelle at Vail Square

Who’s it for: They say everything’s bigger in Texas—that rule also applies to Vail Mountain. You can’t go wrong here if you’re serious about skiing and top-notch accommodations.

It might be fair to say that the titular Vail Mountain is the blueprint for Vail Resorts’ wide-reaching resort empire. Jam-packed with enormous luxury hotels and sprawling lift-accessed terrain to match, this destination pushes the snowsports resort ethos to its limit. Upon visiting, you may even find yourself overwhelmed.

The Arrabelle at Vail Square is smack in the middle of all the action—and only a few steps away from the Eagle Bahn Gondola, which transports skiers to the

Eagle’s Nest restaurant. From there, the mountain’s your oyster.

While Vail Mountain offers plenty of terrain for beginner and intermediate skiers hoping just to cruise, the Back Bowls are a paradise for those seeking

more challenging fare. This 2,785-acre zone (that footprint is larger than many ski areas) has seven bowls and 47 trails, all ripe for exploration. Once the day is done, lounge by the pool at one of Vail’s many accommodations before hitting the town: given the breadth of options on tap,

you’re sure to find something you’ll like to eat and drink.

5. WHISTLER BLACKCOMB, BRITISH COLUMBIA

High-class lodging: Four Seasons Resort and Residences Whistler, Fairmont Chateau Whistler

Who’s it for: Whistler Blackcomb features some of the best and gnarliest big mountain skiing on the planet, so serious skiers will thrive here—especially if they like to pair on-slope action with real luxury.

Whistler Blackcomb mirrors Vail Mountain’s on-and off-the-slope maximalist tendencies, so it should come as no surprise that, several years ago, Vail Resorts acquired the Canadian destination which, by almost every metric, could qualify for a “best of” list (Whistler Blackcomb also made our best

of aprés-skiing list). So, unsurprisingly, high-class accommodations and dining opportunities also make the resort a standout in the luxury ski resort market

The Four Seasons Resort and Residences and the Fairmont Chateau Whistler boast numerous amenities and a range of suites for ski travelers pursuing ultimate comfort. The base village-slash-town matches this high bar with standouts like the Araxi Restaurant and Oyster Bar, which serves up local ingredients alongside a towering list of wine with over 11,000 bottles.

The thing about Whistler Blackcomb, though, is that, despite its proximity to serious money, the resort remains a skier’s mountain with a thriving big mountain and park scene composed of hardcore ski bums. On any given day, you might catch the next big name in freeskiing as they float a backflip—or two—below the Peak Express.

JEWELRY TRENDS FOR 2025

NYC'S 57TH STREET NORDSTROM GETS DECKED OUT

ALL ABOUT FRINGE

HIGH JEWELRY TRENDS FOR 2025

Paris sparkled with the latest haute joaillerie collections delighting in themes as varied as architecture, wildlife, rouleau collars and big gemstones.

EXPLORE OUR CURATED SELECTION OF THE LATEST HIGH JEWELERY TRENDS FOR 2025, FEATURING EXQUISITE COLLECTIONS FROM RENOWNED BRANDS.

Soon to be cherished by their fortunate owners, these pieces offer a glimpse into a world of beauty and craftsmanship.

BEASTS

The call of the wild was heard by Cartier and De Beers who rounded up diamond and black lacquer zebras

and golden lions at De Beers and a diamond panther bracelet from Cartier that stretched from wrist to finger. There were snakes, leopards, kudu and giraffes from the plains of Africa and forests of the Amazon. Chanel’s emblematic lion roared as a diamond coat of arms brooch.

Yet there was joyful whimsy amongst the wildlife with Chopard and Dior offering scampering bunnies, deer, swans and frogs. Dior’s fox, deer and squirrel were carved in chrysoprase and an enchanting ring with emerald-set titanium frogs supporting a gold crown appeared in Chopard’s Fairy Tales collection.

ARCHITECTURE

From the skyscrapers and brownstones of New York to the palaces of the Silk Road and the steel girders of the Eiffel Tower architectural forms and structures were redrawn in diamonds and precious-colored stones. Vuitton discovered a rare and mesmerizing 56.23ct fancy deep orangy-pink square emerald-cut diamond for its Coeur de Paris pendant inspired by the Eiffel Tower. Boghossian drew exotic motifs from the palaces of Qianlong, Jaipur and Persepolis to create mosaic settings of turquoise, lapis and colored gemstones. A contrast to the modernist constructions of New York architecture sparkling

in diamonds with sapphire windows from Harry Winston, or Pomellato’s monochromatic treasures inspired by its home city, Milan.

Similarly, the Back Bay Queen’s Necklace by Surat Jewels draws inspiration from the vibrant cityscape of Bombay. Featuring a central diamond and exquisite gemstones, the design reflects the sunset over Marine Drive and captures the essence of Bombay’s skyline.

GRAPHIC

Designers drew straight lines, crossbars and circles to produce graphic geometric patterns to encircle necks and wrists. Chanel’s sporty collection while coinciding with the Paris Olympics this summer toyed with stars, squares and circles in primary-color gemstones and playfully rearranged Chanel’s typography. It’s equally delightful to get lost in Gucci’s Labrinati (Labyrinth) collection

with linear pathways connecting emeralds with opals, and aquamarines with Paraiba tourmalines on cuffs and bracelets. Chaumet ’s rhythmical collection had a jazzy, graphic onyx and diamond bracelet reminiscent of a keyboard. Elsewhere, Hermes drew rainbows of wavy lines for necklaces and rings that explore the color spectrum and amorphous forms, and Linkage, one of Tasaki’s three 70th anniversary high jewelry sets, was inspired by the pearl oyster baskets

- square outlines set in diamonds and highlighted with tanzanite, aquamarine and grossularite garnet.

BI-COLOR PRECIOUS METAL

We’ve seen this trend of mixing white and yellow gold in the watch world and now it’s inspiring jewelry designers with Tiffany & Co, Piaget and Louis Vuitton experimenting with a platinum and yellow combination. Tiffany & Co’s celestial theme paired platinum with yellow gold for starburst pendants and constellation earrings. Vuitton uses bi-color platinum and gold for rounded collars. Amongst all the colorful gemstones at Piaget is a collar in yellow and white gold combining engraving, rope twists and diamond settings, although yellow gold generally predominates their Extraleganza collection.

FANCY CUTS

Aside from the artistry in the designs and settings of high jewelry there is an opportunity for Maisons to present magical gemstones, like Vuitton’s spectacular large, colored diamond in the Eiffel Tower-inspired pendant. Graff secured two rare Colombian emeralds, one in a kite shape for a bracelet and the other, an elongated lozenge for a ring. Their eye-catching cuts make them a focal point, like Gucci’s floral geometry necklace, featuring a 53.25ct lagoon tourma-

line and a 19.68ct Ethiopian opal, accented by mandarin garnets and opals in a sleek, diamond-set design. The Mimosa collection at Damiani features necklaces and bracelets in a mosaic of precious stones in various cuts and shapes artfully arranged that highlights a trend for fancy cuts in several collections.

ROULEAU COLLARS

Smooth, voluminous rolls or cord-twisted torques present a refined modern look to grace the neckline. These collars, like padded Renaissance-style rouleaux, are appearing more frequently in collections from Messika, Bvlgari and Louis Vuitton, with Messika’s snow-set diamond collar featuring a yellow diamond centerpiece and their pavé-set diamond torques dangling interchangeable diamond pendants. De Beers’ bold interpretation in gold and diamonds is fringed with tiny gold beads while Bvlgari’s Terra Mater Serpenti coiled collar interpretation draws on its Tubogas bracelet technique and dangles an enormous emerald cabochon.

XXL STONES

High jewelery is a Maison’s showcase for rare and impressive precious gemstones like the enormous cabochon emeralds, rubellites and tourmalines for which Bvlgari is famed and Dolce &

Gabbana’s super-sized amethysts, kunzites, green beryls, and aquamarines in their lavish baroque-style gold filigree settings.  However, the collections are now presenting large colorful ornamental hardstones as well including coral, opal, carnelian, and turquoise, notably at Bucc ellati, Damiani and Piaget. One standout piece was Boucheron’s Iceberg necklace with enormous drops of frosted white quartz and diamond.

GARDENS/FLORAL

Nature has always offered designers an abundance of inspiration with flowers adorning women since ancient times. There is something fascinating about reproducing a subject as fragile and transient as a flower in a material as hard and enduring as a gemstone. This is why gardens and prettily colored blooms have been a recurring theme in jewelry over the centuries. Anna Hu has long been drawn to flowers with orchids and roses a current favorite shaped in colored titanium with a ceramic finish and colored gemstones. Chopard’s fairytale flowers feature oak leaves, a rose trapped in crystal and lots of tiny pavé-set blooms and Christian Dior’s jewels are a bucolic setting of shrubbery and trees with fauna hopping through its midst.

ALL ABOUT FRINGE

The fringe has entered the mainstream for 2025 fashion

FRINGED FINISHES WERE TRENDING FOR SPRING 2025, WITH EVERYTHING FROM EARTHY RAFFIA TO DISTRESSED DENIM TO FLUFFY KNITS TO ART-DECO TINSELS AND BEYOND BRINGING VOLUME, MOTION, AND TEXTURE TO THE RUNWAYS OF PARIS, MILAN, LONDON, AND NEW YORK.

Fringe is often associated with boho-chic, and Chloé and Isabel Marant have certainly made a case that it should come back, while Gabriela Hearst also tapped into a sense of earthy freedom while taking it in a distinct direction.

But many other brands used the dynamic and voluminous qualities of fringe finishes to evoke the theme of expressive luxury that seems to be taking over from quiet luxury as designers embrace a new balance of sensibility and creative freedom. At Bottega Veneta,

for example, Matthieu Blazy made an unexpected and playful exploration of textural interplay and unique volumes. 16Arlington and Sportmax demonstrated that fringe can bring liveliness and motion while still fitting within a vision of minimalist elegance. With his second runway collection at McQueen, Seán McGirr refined and reintroduced his vision for the brand, balancing tailoring with craft techniques – with fringe foremost among them – to drive opulence and drama.

SEVEN DAYS WITHOUT SUGAR

BY NOW, WE ALL KNOW IT: AN EXCESS OF SUGAR IS THE ENEMY OF HEALTH. IT’S BAD FOR THE BODY, THE SKIN, AND THE BRAIN, AND ELIMINATING—OR AT LEAST REDUCING—AS MUCH ADDED SUGAR FROM OUR DIET AS POSSIBLE CAN MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN YOUR LIFE.

I can hear this a hundred times and it won’t stop me from grabbing an ice cream cone on my way home. So how can I give it up? Until recently, it was totally unthinkable. Then, I read a Harvard study that found refined sugar consumption can contribute to the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, as well as another study that highlighted that prolonged sugar consumption can lead to the development of diseases like Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, or thyroid problems.

The final straw was when a doctor pointed out my clear dependence on sugar. That’s when I decided to try out a 7-day cleanse. Now, on the other side of it all, I have some good news: It is possible to live without eating added sugar, and you can feel really good—that is, once you’re finished detoxing. More on my experience, below.

HOW MY SUGAR-FREE WEEK WENT

To eliminate sugar from your diet, you can go one of two ways: The drastic one, where you just go cold turkey or the easier one, where you gradually remove it from your life. The first one can lead to side effects

like headaches or a feeling of tiredness, which feel dramatic at the time but will only last for a handful of days. The latter is certainly simpler, but is slower (and there’s more temptation along the way).

That’s why I cut it all out cold turkey, eliminating all sugars for 7 days immediately.

DAY 1: I’LL NEVER MAKE IT

From the moment I woke up, my mind was trying to sabotage me. I kept hearing this little voice saying “what about a little treat?” It was obviously difficult. When you’re avoiding a food like sugar, you have to change both your habits and even more so your way of thinking. First, I removed all the sugar that was easy for me to eliminate—like from my coffee—then I took a look at the hidden places where it might be lurking (think salad dressings and premade pasta sauce).

At the end of the day, I simply tumbled into bed. Apparently, all my energy had been used on hunting down sugar.

DAY 3: I FEEL MORE ENERGETIC, HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?

I had been told that without sugar you’ll feel better and more energetic. Obviously, in my mind, that just made absolutely no sense. It was therefore a great surprise to see how immediately I started to wake up fresher and more rested, less tired. In the morning I didn’t drag myself around like a zombie, but I started to get going quite quickly. I had no dark circles under my eyes and my skin was luminous. A miracle!

Starting on day three, I began to notice changes on my face. It was less full and more defined—I was surprised to see the

change after just three short (though the felt long) days. Other people commented on them, too, so I knew they had to be real.

Day 5: Feeling more focused

You might be familiar with brain fog if you love sugar—it’s difficulty concentrating— when your thoughts feel heavy and your mind is crowded. Eating sugar makes you feel that way, and giving up sugar makes it even worse. After eliminating sugar, you’ll free your mind of this brain fog… eventually, making it easier to concentrate, work better, and rest better. On day five, I finally started to turn this corner and my mind felt so much better.

DAY 7: A LIGHTER BODY

Water retention is something I have always battled. So when my legs felt slimmer—like I had just had the best lymphatic drainage massage—it was a welcome benefit. By eliminating sugar, I got rid of these stagnant fluids built up in my body.

WHAT NEXT?

A challenge like this, even of such a short duration, has the power to open your mind and program it differently: I decided to extend my no-sugar experience beyond the 7-day challenge, and I have now made it 5 months. I can’t say I don’t like sweets—or that I literally never eat them—but I can say that removing them from my diet has changed how my brain works.

I no longer feel the urgent call from my brain for a cookie or piece of chocolate. And on the occasion that I do have a treat—my birthday, a holiday, or special occasion—I truly enjoy every bite of it. No guilt involved.

Wines for NYE Delightful Sparkling

WILLIAM SMITH / POLO LIFESTYLES

T IS THAT TIME OF THE YEAR. AND PERHAPS LIKE YOU, I HAVE BEEN COUNTING MY MANY BLESSINGS AND RECOUNTING THE PLETHORA OF THINGS FOR WHICH I AM DEEPLY GRATEFUL. WHATEVER YOUR OWN PRACTICES FOR USHERING IN THE NEW YEAR, IT SHOULD BE ACCOMPANIED BY SOME POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE, EVEN IF PRACTICED SOLO IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR LIVING ROOM WHEN THE MIDNIGHT HOUR TOLLS.

Part of that ritual for me always involves the celebratory pop of a bottle of champagne or sparkling wine. This month, I recommend a few of my favorite bottles to consider for your own enjoyment and

festivities, some of which are obscure finds and others, more well-established bottlings.

OFF THE BEATEN PATH

VARA NEW MEXICO SPARKLING BRUT

Nearly a decade after the sale of the winery bearing his family name to Precept Wine & Spirits, Laurent Gruet is back at the helm as a partner and as the sparkling winemaker for New Mexico-based Vara, where he and an all-star team are continuing to build upon the state’s nearly four-century history of wine making.

The Gruet label’s success and expansion meant that the original vision of wines made from New Mexico grown grapes had given way to sourcing fruit from other places. At Vara, Laurent Gruet has led the release of their very first all New Mexico grown sparkling, a non-vintage Brut crafted in the traditional méthode champenoise style. Here, Gruet forgoes the typical grapes, deploying Chenin Blanc, Pinot Meunier, and Listan Prieto

for this bottling. The addition of the mission grape is a nod to New Mexico’s history of grape cultivation and the blend yields a beautiful wine.

Bright aromas of lemon rind, apple, and pear on the nose, the bubbles are also fine, active, and voluminous. On the palate, there is a depth of complexity beyond the typical fruit that includes honeycomb and salinity. This is a very food-friendly sparkling to pop and enjoy with a favorite cheese plate.

WILLOW MOUNTAIN WINERY SAPPHIRE SPARKLING

If New Mexico is not among the growing regions that come to mind when you consider sparkling wine, hold your hat… on recent travels, I found a sparkling wine in Montana – yes, Montana – that was truly delicious and worthy of attention. While Montana has a small number of producers across its vastness, many make wine from fruits other than grapes and those producers making wine from

In Search of Solace Sparkling Holidays

grapes most often import fruit from other states, such as Washington, Oregon and California.

Willow Mountain’s Sapphire Sparkling is 100 percent grown in Montana near the town of Corvalis, about an hour’s drive south of Missoula. The namesake Willow Mountain hovers in the backdrop of partners Roxanne’s and Brain’s vineyards of volcanic ash and gravel soils where the growing season is short and hang time each year is maximized to the hilt. They are true artists working with relatively unknown terroir for viticulture, leaning constantly into testing and learning, and allowing their experiences to create further evolved wines. This is certainly the case with their Sapphire Sparkling.

A blend of relatively obscure St. Pepin, Prairie Star, and Fontenac Blanc grapes – hardier vines that do well in cold weather climates – the sparkling is done in the traditional méthode champenoise style. This is only the second bottling of this wine, but having tasted both the first and the second, the evolution of the blend is splendid. Golden-straw hued in the glass, with tropical notes on the nose with just a hint of earthiness on the palate, it is wonderfully dry, with well-balanced acidity and notes of vanilla, almond, and crisp apple. I was so taken with this wine that I wanted to

double-check my experience and a few fellow wine friends tasted both vintages with me and concurred – wow.

THINK PINK

LAURENT-PERRIER CUVÉE ROSÉ

Rosé is all in vogue. And I, too, will own my obsession. But it wasn’t always so. When Laurent-Perrier first offered up this exquisite champagne in 1968, it was very much a novelty. Extended maceration time of select Pinot Noir grapes from multiple Crus creates a bold, fruit-forward wine with salmon-colored hues.

Herbaceous and floral aromas dominate on the nose, with a textured palate full of ripe red berries like raspberries and cherries with a crisp and dry finish. This bright and juicy and luscious and anything but hum-drum.

If there is a standard for rosé champagne, this is it, and an exemplary wine to usher in the blessings of a new year. If you want to take it next level, a reusable metal “robe” was launched in 2017, decorated in a flower petal abstract, that encapsulates the uniquely shaped bottle, elevating the luxury experience.

RAM’S GATE BRUT ROSÉ

From the Old World to the New, I recently happened upon the posh and welcoming Ram’s Gate Winery, which sits almost directly opposite the road from the Sonoma Raceway and at the entrance to Sonoma County wine country. Rest assured, the view from the vineyard’s gorgeous tasting room faces away from the racetrack, offering some stunning views. I am so smitten with the place, their hospitality, and of course, their wines, that I wanted to make a return trip to see if my fondness was more than fleeting… it is.

The first vintage of Ram’s Gate’s Brut Rosé was in 2010 and it continues to be a special treat with only a few hundred cases produced each year from 100 percent Pinot Noir. Ram’s Gate’s winemaker, Joe Neilsen, has been with them since 2018 and is a thoughtful steward of the estate’s legacy, creating exceptional wines of increasing variety from both estate-grown fruit and growers with whom he has an abiding regard. The attention is evident in his wines and the Sonoma County Brut Rosé is no exception.

Pale pink in the glass, with floral and red fruit aromas, dry and slightly saline on the palate with notes of currants and brioche. It’s long and compelling finish

BUBBLES WITH STYLE

DOM PERIGNON’S TRIBUTE TO JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT

For the release of its 2015 vintage, champagne house Dom Perignon released a tribute to the late Jean-Michel Basquiat, utilizing Basquiat’s 1983 piece, In Italian, as the inspiration for both the bottle labels and their boxes. According to the Maison:

The series includes three different boxes, each depicting a part of Basquiat’s paint-

ing, which can be reassembled by bringing the coffrets together. The design was imagined according to this principle of assemblage, dear to both Dom Pérignon and Basquiat.

To further strengthen the sense of the encounter between Dom Pérignon and Basquiat, each of the three parts of the artwork was studied in its components so that the name and emblem of the Maison harmoniously inscribe themselves on the box within the color fields of the painting, maximizing the sophisticated interplay of its forms and lines.

A true seal to this tribute, the label on the bottles, also created in three color variants, bears the hybrid emblem of the

three-branched crown superimposed on the shield.

As for tasting notes, well, its Dom Perignon vintage champagne and garnered typically high scores including a 97 from James Suckling. The real treat here, in addition to the wine, is the labeling tribute that creates something truly unique with exceptional artistry and style.

The laws have historical markers that are linked to laws and policies of industrializing states which sought to regulate and punish the activities of marginalized people for reasons related to the availability of cheap labor, crime prevention, morality, and public health…To justify such inhuman and degrading treatment, those deviating from prevailing social norms were often accused of being the source of disease, deviance, or crime…

Persons experiencing homelessness and poverty are extremely vulnerable to human rights violations. Homelessness is, by itself, an affront to human dignity and a serious violation of the right to adequate housing and other human rights. States have an obligation to prevent and eliminate homelessness, including by guaranteeing access to safe, affordable, and adequate housing...

Human rights law requires States to take all possible measures to eradicate extreme poverty and to prevent and end homelessness. Homelessness reflects the failure of the State to

guarantee the human right to adequate housing. Criminalizing homelessness does not address this human rights violation. Instead, it makes it worse. It punishes people for behaviors they cannot avoid, further undermining their ability to survive or access housing.

Relying on the criminal justice system to address the consequences of poverty and homelessness serves only to penalize individuals for structural inequality, social exclusion and their fundamental denial of rights. Criminalization further entrenches inequality, reinforces social stigma, and undermines the dignity of persons experiencing homelessness or poverty. A punitive or carceral approach that penalizes persons in precarity for begging, sleeping, or working in public spaces also poses a significant economic cost to the State that should be redirected to measures that are effective in preventing and ending homelessness and reducing poverty.

Such a punitive approach leads to a cycle of circular movement of individuals through poverty, homelessness and the criminal justice system and cannot be seen as justifiable. Penalizing the conduct of people who rely on the use of public spaces for their surviv-

al will not achieve the objectives of combating homelessness and poverty when the conduct that is prohibited is something the affected person cannot avoid, such as sleeping somewhere or gaining sufficient income for their own survival through informal work or begging. In addition, criminalization results in discrimination on grounds of socio-economic status or other prohibited grounds, such as race, national origin, or health, in violation of human rights law. Homelessness and poverty can be addressed through transformative approaches that facilitate access to adequate housing, decent work, healthcare, training and social protection, not by making being homeless or living in poverty a criminal offence.

The Special Rapporteurs recommend to States, including local governments, to ensure full protection of the right to an adequate standard of living, including the right to adequate housing, for everyone who is within their jurisdiction or control. This implies eradicating poverty, ensuring access to affordable housing, and preventing and ending homelessness, so that no one is forced to sleep or survive in the street without access to adequate housing.”

The Celestial Mandate for a Radical Transformation in Devotional Living

“Then the angel revealed the river of the water of life, shining clear as like crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the Tree of Life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. They will see his face, and his word shall illumine their foreheads. Darkness shall be no more. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. They will rule with him, age after age after age.”

ILLUMINED BY A HEART-FELT MISSION, ARTISTS OF THE SOUL HEED THE CALL OF THE RESOUNDING TRUMPETS TO PIERCE INTO THE FUNDAMENTAL STREAMS OF CONSCIOUSNESS AND REVEAL THE HIDDEN TAPESTRY OF OUR SOUL’S COLLECTIVE UNITY, BIRTHING INTO REALITY THE BRILLIANCE OF AN ENLIGHTENED HUMANITY IN SERVICE TO THOSE IN GREATEST NEED OF SPIRITUAL COMPASSION AND EMPATHY.

This month, we honor the efforts of Monarch Visionary Lena Miller, Ph.D, recently adorned by the San Francisco Chronicle as one of the most influential people of the city. Miller is the co-founder and CEO of Urban Alchemy, a nonprofit employment social enterprise that provides returning citizens with meaningful and impactful roles in addressing homelessness and its resulting chaos in city neighborhoods through a peaceful transition to spiritual empowerment.

From the feces on the streets, to hardened hearts fallen out of tune with their cosmic beat, the will to abundantly transform the darkness of San Francisco into the brilliant vision we all live for, started with one simple step: Self-Belief. As a messenger of Peace, Justice and Liberty, accepting her gift to harness the force, initiated Miller upon a path of profound inner transformation and spiritual realization that has vastly impacted the city of San Francisco.

THE PHILOSOPHER’S STONE

“What you seek is seeking you.” - Rumi

For millennia, alchemists and mystics have enduringly sought out the secrets to the Universe, namely the power to harness the primordial elemental forces in pursuit of spiritual mastery. In alchemy, which studies our divine relationship with nature, the philosopher’s stone is a mythical substance believed to have the ability to transform base metals into gold or silver, and to generate the elixir of life, honored as Amrit in Sanskrit. Alchemists see it as the most perfect substance attainable and a symbol of divine illumination, heavenly bliss, and perfection of the human soul, capable of curing illnesses, prolonging life, and inspiring spiritual revitalization.

The philosopher’s stone, first mentioned

4,000 years ago in ancient stone carvings, is believed to be a common substance, to be found everywhere in plain view but hidden from common sight. The quest for the stone, described in the Magnum Opus, encouraged alchemists from the Middle Ages to the end of the 17th century to examine in their laboratories numerous substances and their interactions. This quest thereby provided a deep body of elemental wisdom that ultimately led to the sciences of chemistry, metallurgy, and pharmacology.

Within the delicate balance wherein worlds collide is where the hidden power lies, for secret wisdom is bestowed upon those who devotedly serve its intention to harmonize. As the resonance of our living word attunes to the radiance of the heart, that is when the veil between worlds shall part. Urban Alchemy was founded in 2018 to deliver a longterm, enlightened approach to cure the soul-wrenching paradigm of homelessness, crime, and challenging street conditions faced by communities throughout the nation.

conflict de-escalation training on some of the neighborhood’s most problematic blocks to help mitigate conflict, keep streets and sidewalks clean and passable, and connect the homeless to housing and services. More than 90% of practitioners are formerly long-term incarcerated and/or have experienced homelessness themselves.

Revitalizing those in need through purpose in service, Urban Alchemy provides a pathway for opportunity. As a bridge between two extremes, Urban Alchemy serves as a conduit for the alchemical transformation of the human soul. Urban Alchemy Practitioners leverage their ever-evolving emotional intelligence and leadership skills to empathize and de-escalate, helping create safe, clean and housed communities, while developing their own personal spiritual growth through embodied compassion in the toughest neighborhoods and streets. Miller sensed the calling as early as she can remember: “I always felt a clear signal, a presence, a knowing. I was fascinating by anything spiritual.” Miller shares that “to pick up the pattern is the presence, and in the presence is the communication.” Which made her question: “What is this? What is this that we are all feeling?”

Miller started her first nonprofit at 23-years old, and at the inception of Urban Alchemy, she states: “I felt like I wanted to come out of the closet. Everything I touched turned to gold… We have lost our ability to attune, to receive our messages, the ongoing intelligence and consciousness of the creator. This is where our power comes from. It’s out there.”

fortune’s spite; revive from ashes and rise.

Envision an awakened species biorhythmically orchestrated in sacred heart service to actualize Universal Harmony, fueling an Inner Flame that unleashes the dormant powers of the divinely inspired mind to psychically penetrate into the cosmic mysteries of Mother Earth’s ancient Kundalini Shakti bio-resonance celestial frequencies.

The Middle Ages of the Medieval Period, known as the Dark Ages, was marked by difficulties and calamities including famine, plague, and war, which significantly diminished the population of Europe. Yet, from the accumulated suffering of the many centuries of profound strife sprung a seasoned heart rooted into the depths of the Earth to fruit the wisdom to carry us forth. Following the Middle Ages, the Renaissance was a fervent period of European cultural, artistic, political and economic flourishing that promoted the rediscovery of classical philosophy, literature and art, including the restoration of Hermetic and Platonic foundations to European Alchemy.

There is no doubt that we are now amidst a collective rebirth as global emotional and mental instability as well as economic and planetary resource inefficiencies

guide us inwards to leverage the ancient wisdom stored within the Earth’s crystalline memory streams, the planetary field of consciousness, that was harnessed by ancient civilizations to wield the intelligence of the cosmos.

“In alchemy, all things are evolving but considered to be exposed to a wave of energies becoming involved in matter as well, and thus subject to hindrances and impurities from matter not ready or mature enough to evolve beyond a certain level (corruptible matter). As a result the energies of life are weakened and the energies of matter predominate when it is the energies of life which should predominate. The alchemist believed that by understanding Nature’s laws and applying them with Art, that it is possible to remove hindrances to the evolutionary wave so that the energies of life can predominate and lift the subject toward perfection.” – “Real Alchemy A primer of Practical Alchemy” by Robert Allen Bartlett

tral light of the Heavens, received through the pineal gland’s inner eye, channeled as we root into the Earth to deliver power to the people. Radiantly embodying the sweet nectar of our transfiguration, we nourish those in need with the ancient wisdom to inspire illumination. Sealed on the forehead by the illumination of inner sight, we transform the darkness of our environment through the power of the Cosmic Christ.

Emotional frequencies of love and truth are a contagion that threaten the collapse of hierarchies that feed off the soul’s division, for once kindled, the flames of hope alchemically reveal the true reality of our glorious unity. As the frequency bandwidth expands between our collective heart’s current, our senses expand to reveal the mystical mysteries hidden within and before us. A wealth of wisdom flows beneath our feet, accessible to those whose hearts beat with the rhythm of the Earth’s celestial bio-frequencies.

Currently operating in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Portland, Austin and Birmingham, Urban Alchemy’s unique approach supports the formerly incarcerated in transforming the stone in their hearts to gold, engendering a deep sense of worthiness that radiantly beckons others forth to question their

darkened reality as a deeper truth is risen from within the Earth to uplift them. Hope cries out for love and acceptance from the depths of every soul.

As more cities investigate Miller’s success, the police force has become her greatest advocate. In January 2024, the Stanford Ethnography Lab published a report celebrating the drop in crime in the UrbanAlchemy-served neighborhoods of San Francisco where Urban Alchemy marches in-step with law enforcement agencies, city departments and community organizations to harbor peace amongst the chaos in the streets. The study reported that crime rates at Urban Alchemy-served intersections dropped by 52% over the course of the year, and drug crime rates dropped by 80%.

“The flip-side of trauma, is that as you survive, you develop this super power, called emotional intelligence. The more that you have to learn to read your environment, so that your survival is dependent upon it, the better you get at it. People in prison, in particular, are able to develop this skill, to be able to read people’s energy. People have become so good at concealing their intentions, but your life could be in jeopardy if you can’t read it.”

Miller continues: “We are the largest community-based public safety, also known as alternatives to the police, in the country. We are employing individuals returning home from former life sentences. The symmetry of the organization is mind-blowingly beautiful, and our largest supporters are the police. We are going to use our gift, because these are the times we are living in, and we know how to use it.”

THE EVOLUTION OF EMPATHIC INTELLIGENCE

“My sense of God is my wonder about the Universe.” –

Albert Einstein

From the Latin ‘in’-‘telos’-‘gero,’ meaning “to accomplish the inner goal,” the evolution of intelligence is contingent upon spiritual service. Our self-awareness and higher comprehension evolve as we develop conviction in the voice that speaks from the depths of our heart, surrendering our resistance to the power of love as we come together for the values that drive our existence. The self-fulling prophecy of the Second Coming of the Christ is birthed inside as we rise in alignment with the fire-born vision that is our birthright.

The Sanskrit word for the heart chakra is Anahata, meaning unstruck sound. As the heart expands into fulfillment, it’s beat stills to an effervescent electromagnetic auric pulse of golden radiance from which seeds the tree of life overflowing with healing frequencies to activate the gifts of heightened awareness and divine senses in service of humanity’s peaceful co-existence. Rising to higher states of evolution perceivable only to those whose senses are in attunement, we rapture through our Solar Heart’s Ascension into a Universe illumined by spirit.

According to the Ideos Institute of Pasadena, California, Empathic Intelligence is “a pursuit of knowing. It is a practical and powerful process of gaining new insights and empathic understanding that leads to ideas unconsidered or deemed impossible in its absence. Unlike other intelligences, it relies not only on the accumulation of data or knowledge, but the unique ability to understand, and then act upon, the experiences and perspectives of others without negating one’s own in the process.”

The ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus believed fire to be the fundamental material that united all things, including all other elemental forces, and saw the world, itself, as an “ever-living fire.” Indeed, it is the electrical fire of the heart, risen by the Passion of the Christ, known as the Kundalini Shakti in Sanskrit, that activates the cosmic bio-frequencies of the organ system, the chakras in Yogic philosophy – each relating to a different elemental aspect. Empaths, who are activated by service, ascend into higher consciousness states to penetrate the many veils of perception. The nectar of illumination, Amrit, also known as the spirit molecule, DMT, is synthesized and metabolized in the brain as the body’s electrical system rises to higher vibrations. The spiritual gifts of service are rewarded to those who are devoted to the transformation of spiritual planes from terrestrial to celestial.

Guided upon a blossoming vision, the golden hearts of empaths can sense those in kind, as, endowed with a divinely inspired mind, we perceive through each other’s inner eye. To cross the veil to the higher realms, in receipt of our divine inheritance, we must walk a path of celestial resonance, for it is the will to serve that activates our divine intelligence.

Urban Alchemy’s HEART program, which stands for “Homeless Engagement Assistance Response Team” is a community-based public safety initiative designed to respond to non-emergency situations involving homeless individuals, often by deploying practitioners with lived experience of homelessness to de-escalate situations and connect people to necessary resources; essentially acting as an alternative to police intervention in such scenarios. Rather than aggressively combating homelessness, the program prioritizes compassion and understanding to connect with people in crisis on a deeper level.

Dr. Lena Miller shares: “Our strength in rapid implementation came from the prison experience, from people having structure and knowing how to work together. We have transferable skills, meaning that you don’t have to throw away your past, you don’t have to be ashamed of it, or pretend it didn’t happen. Everything that happened to you made you who you are today. In prison, structure keeps you alive.”

THE HEALING OF NATIONS THROUGH SELF-ACTUALIZATION

“I have been evangelizing to everybody who will listen, and we are working on this, I believe that the social services system is outdated, it is a 40- to 50-year-old model that no longer works particularly when it comes to homelessness, that the shelter model is outdated, it no longer works, and that what we need to have are healing and recovery centers.” – Dr. Lena Miller

Whether we are born into wealth or despair, within every soul’s vessel rests an unrealized purpose that, as actualized through selfless service, becomes our life’s greatest affair. To realize one’s eternal

mission is the greatest experience; to bestow this gift marks the characteristics of true leadership. Guiding souls out of their darkness, wayshowers establish a path for salvation through spiritual empowerment. Illuminating the demonic cords of spiritual enslavement, flamebearers awaken higher sense within the blind-hearted, inspiring the alchemical transformation through the embodiment of ancient spiritual wisdom for the healing astral light to liberate their anchored perspectives.

Those whose hearts are pure serve as a portal through which others can soar, to pierce the veil and sense beyond their sickness and behold the glory of their true condition, their true wealth as the Lord’s golden cherubim. “There’s a way we can all do better and it’s out there, it’s no longer a secret. I asked myself all the time ‘Why are they so disrespectful, so greedy and so ugly about things?’ It’s bad, we shouldn’t be doing stuff like this. There are better ways to do things, and I do not know why we are not doing a better job. The alarm has been sounding for a long time. Treat people with respect, when people have been affected by trauma, don’t scare them more or yell at them; be kind, be patient, make their surroundings beautiful,” shares Miller.

Righteousness is contagious. Dr. Rupert Sheldrake introduced the concept of morphogenic fields to describe the gravitational, electromagnetic, and quantum matter fields that emanate from every cell, organ, and organism. These fields are interconnected across all space and time, all sentient creation. Through acts of kindness, love and compassion, the genetic cellular structure of humanity rises across the fields of the Earth, creating ripples across space-time. This resonant field activates our genetic expression, including collective thought fields, even

RENEWAL COMMUNITY SUPPORT EXPLORATION · ENERGY

across the fluid structure of time. This field, which many feel as their calling, resonates through the senses, permeating through dense matter to gradually shift structures. As one steps forward, many shall be called to follow.

Ancient civilizations harnessed this field of consciousness that runs through the Earth’s ley lines as power generators and consciousness field amplifiers, witnessed in the remnants of ancient temple and pyramid sites, which were also in alignment with the celestial consciousness of the star system, channeling divine cosmic frequencies into the Earth’s planetary intelligence. As our etheric spirit emerges from the carbon structure of our form, we connect with this rich resource of power, wisdom, consciousness – the planetary kundalini shakti - that flows throughout

time as a rainbow river of cosmic light, evolving with the universal orchestration of life.

Through valiancy and righteousness, as we attune to this field, not only do we heal, we evolve, not only within ourselves, but across our ancestral lineages and across the planetary kingdoms. The further we transgress from the source of Universal unity, the more powerful the calling draws us, creating emotional and mentality calamity until we tear down the walls between us, clearing the resistance for the force to work through us.

Will we learn how to carry ourselves? Will we remember the teachings stored within our flesh? Will we harness the power we stand on to serve those who cannot yet behold their worth to witness

the glory of an illumined Earth? As hearts unite, invisible walls dissolve. As the will to serve is realized, the force within creates through our eyes. For more information on Urban Alchemy visit: https:// urban-alchemy.us

SELF-REFLECTION

SIX QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF - AND ANSWER TRUTHFULLY -AS WE CLOSE OUT 2024

COACH JOEY VELEZ MENTAL WELLNESS CONTRIBUTOR

@velezmentalperformance

AS THE YEAR 2024 COMES TO AN END, THIS IS THE TIME WHEN WE LOOK TOWARD 2025 AND WHAT WE WANT TO ACCOMPLISH. HAVING AMBITIONS AND GOALS IS A FANTASTIC WAY TO ENHANCE MOTIVATION, TO PROVIDE DIRECTION, AND ALLOWS YOU TO START THE NEW YEAR OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT.

However, we often overlook the past in our attempt to set ourselves up for the future. In order to build a strong 2025, you must look back on what happened during 2024 so that you do not make the same mistakes and that you carry over any momentum that you gained during the year.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

Below are several reflection questions

that I ask myself at the end of every year to help me wrap up the last 365 days and prepare me for the upcoming 365. There is not a right or wrong way to answer each question; nor is there a specific order you have to go in, the intent is to get your mind thinking and to develop a deeper understanding of who you are and how you operate.

What am I grateful happened this year?

I am grateful that I had the ability to travel and experience a variety of different areas. This year I was able to travel to the Cayman Islands, Nashville, and various cities within the state of Texas. I am grateful for these experiences because I have not been able to travel since becoming an adult due to financial restrictions. Being able to experience different cities, different cultures, having conversations with different individuals has open my eyes to how fun and amazing this world really is.

What hard things did I overcome this year?

Something difficult that I had to overcome this year, and I am still trying to overcome, is a variety of professional challenges. I have faced conflict in the workplace, being overwhelmed with posting personal content on social me-

dia, and making progress in the consulting world, I have yet to find an effective way to manage these challenges. While I am better at managing my schedule and having conversations when faced with conflict, this is an area that will always be a work in progress.

What do I need to start doing?

I would like to start building social connections within my community. Not necessarily to build my business, which would be great, but to have people a part of my support system that are local. I have a great support system back home in California, but it has been difficult to establish a support system moving to a new city that is in the middle of nowhere. Enhancing social connection will allow me to enjoy my area a little bit more and open me up to new experiences.

What do I need to stop doing?

I need to stop giving into desires, specifically with nutrition. Before I moved to Texas, I went on a six month nutrition plan that helped me lose 30 pounds and feeling the best I have felt in the last 15 years. Over the last year, it has been hard to remain consistent with my nutrition because I give in to the temptation of sweets or any indulgent

THOUGHTS MATTER

of delicious foods. Moderation is fine, but when it is closer to the norm, that is when things need to change. One thing that could help is setting reminders on my phone or in my kitchen that remind me of what I want to get back to.

What do I need to keep doing?

I need to keep experiencing life. What keeps me going is knowing I have a trip right around the corner or that there is some event that I can go to. I believe that life is about experiences and enjoying your time while you are here, so that is what I am going to keep doing. Whether that be taking weekend trips to nearby cities and states, trying out new restaurants or food festivals, or attending nearby sporting events, taking time for myself and enjoying new things is going to give me the motivation I need to keep

going.

What’s one thing I can do to get 1% better every day?

One thing I can do every day is getting back into the practice of journaling and gratitude. This is something I did a couple years ago, but it has fallen off since I moved to Texas. Practicing gratitude allows me to identify the good things that are happening in my life, when it is so easy to focus on the things that are not going great, and journaling provides me an outlet to get my thoughts out of my brain and onto a piece of paper.

The key with answering these questions is to provide some detail because that is where the learning happens. I can say what I am grateful for, what challenges I overcame, what behaviors I want to

change or carry with me into the new year, but if I do not understand why those things happened, how I am going to make those changes, or what those changes are going to do for me, then I am going to be less likely to make those changes.

FINAL THOUGHTS

While setting goals is important, it should not be done without self-reflection. Self-reflection allows you to build awareness on what strategies worked for you, what strategies do not work for you, and allows you to learn about yourself as a person. All of this information can be used to help propel you forward in the upcoming year. So before you set your goals, take the time and self-reflect so you can build a better future.
