The project forms observations around the various groups that are more vulnerable in a post-covid scenario. SG Highway although seen as a transit has now transformed into a hub for attracting vending activities along with commercial development across the stretch. It aims to look at various perceptions and meanings attached to streets and their use by the selected vendor groups on site.

The project also challenges the mandates for physical distancing and hygiene standards to influence the way it is designed. It portrays the epicenter of such urban spaces that focus on developing spaces for the vendors in all time and explores the relationship of public and inclusive processes that hosts various activities in an urban setting.

The provocation is to understand the dynamics of myriad ways in which public space is occupied, governed, experienced and needed for various day-to-day livelihood. The project focuses on one junction of the highway where one can find an overlap of traces of major dynamic systems that exist in conjunction.

VENDING TRACES 19
EXISTING PLAN The concerns regarding the space are there is a lot of vehicular traffіc on the road making it extremely diffіcult, almost impossible for the pedestrians to cross without exposing to the ongoing traffіc. The commercial buildings on the edge are encompassed by high compound walls or opaque edges that physically and visually disconnect the users and stop them from using the space. The commercial buildings and offіces have underutilized building setbacks that are occupied by private parking.
PROPOSED PLAN The design strategies for traffіc management include fіrst traffіc composition that is to reduce the number of lanes dispensing the volume and providing the relocated space for pedestrian movement or cycle lanes, second laying out the geometric movement patterns by diverging and merging where the number of conflict points are reduced, separating the left-turning vehicles a 100-m away from the junction and clearly demarcating the left turns or traffіc islands in the form of curbs.
EXISTING ISOMETRIC VIEW
Accompanied by high compound walls, private parking and kiosk business, it is a space that the vendors need for a better economic opportunity. Existing service road which is a 2-way road is converted into one lane road only available for the access to the commercial and residential buildings on the edge. 22
PROPOSED ISOMETRIC VIEW
The idea is to make the space as a connector and a destination, not a place people hurry on their way to other parts of SG highway. To do this, the further design intervention was chosen in the prominent activity generator area near Titanium Square. It is a high-end commercial space that doesn’t allow inclusivity for these vendors to operate their business. 23
