TETRIS BOOKS 2015
Awarded second place in the International ZhuLong Young Architects Design Competition, China 2015.
SITE ANALYSIS The Tetris Bookstore will be an epicenter for three distinct components of the surrounding community as it serves students, local residents, and retail consumers. Adjacent to the MIAD dorms in Milwaukee’s Historical Third Ward, the site is currently a parking lot at the corner of Broadway and Menomonee street which is surrounded by a tranquil pedestrian-oriented shopping area. The site also connects with Catalano Square Park and Broadway Theatre. The context of the Historical Third Ward encourages a building designed for the high pedestrian traffic of these three types of potential patrons.

CONCEPT This bookstore is inspired by the Russian video game, Tetris. Players of Tetris are encouraged to think ahead about how to fit blocks with others that have already been laid. Books similarly allow us to see where we’ve been and empowers us then to look ahead to what we might expect in the future. The building’s form consists of various shapes of Tetris blocks stacking down. Following laws of gravity, some blocks are left floating above gaps, this brings natural daylight into the spaces.

Shift & Interlocking
Void Space
Transparency
These spaces bring a level of transparency when viewed externally, creating an illusion of motion as the blocks appear to be shifting to interlock with it’s counterparts, symbolizing the coming together of the various intentions of the building and the intersection of the subcultures of the surrounding community. Rather than expanding, which makes the world out of reach, this building brings the expanse of the world to it’s patrons.

STURGEON BAY RESIDENCE 2015
The Sturgeon Bay Residence is a residential project under La Dallman Architects located in Green Bay, WI. This one-story family summer vacation house is located near a lake and also surrounded abundantly by pine and cedar trees. It’s design is focused on seclusion and integration with the surrounding geography. The courtyard placed in the middle of the property provides a level of privacy between the bedroom and living and studio, as well as access to a common area.

This is a model of the aforementioned project located along the Milwaukee river. It shows a bridge concept which is intended for both pedestrians and cyclists. I used combination of chipboard and acrylic paint to make site model and several layers of resin to create water effect.

WEST BEND CABANA 2013
This “Shift Cabana” is an add-on design concept to an existing house for a young couple to display their car collection and modern furniture. The addition provides them with a semi-private studio that is secluded from their existing home.
STUDY SECTION SKETCH

The house will be built five feet underground, which allows guests to see the car collection as they drive in.

SPLIT LEVEL The elevated area of the cabana is used as a home library, meditation space, and a foyer. This “split floor” has access to the studio on the second floor and the car collection the first. A large screen door invites the morning light into the space. Wisconsin’s weather pattern is classified as a humid continental climate where summers are warm and winters are severely cold. The solar angle during winter is at 24° vertically, but in summer, rises to 70°. By placing the large windows and doors on the East to West axis, the house receives abundant sunlight and heat during the winter, as well as improved ventilation during the summer.
