machine de phenomene the
movement
of
light
machine de phenomene project combines collages, maps and studies instinct and insight. the initial generator of the project were layered, analyzed and articulated collages created after analyzing the movie “the return. the collages meant to connect the representational with the notional, creating several process models that then came together to create enclosed and open detailed spaces with unique light filtering.

space into place
intervention as imagining the site. space into place is a project that guides perception of the cities, savvannah and charleston, to intersection and program to place. this project introduced program to an abstractly created site. the project focused on scale, materiality, program and site along with the dynamic relationship between the place and its function.

after understanding and analyzing the sites and interventions, we were able to relate the historical qualities we experienced in savvannah with a personal experience of our own. for my site i found a number of commonalities between the cotton exchange industry in Savvannah and my hometown, Palestine. the social differences causing separation between people. therefore, my intervention intended to break the separation wall and act as bridge to connect the two parts of the city back together. city abstract construct.
34|
the intervention had two main entrances from either side of the wall. there are markets at either side of the intervention each reflecting a different culture. the main interaction spaces happen in between the two main masses, where people with different backgrounds come to interact and communicate in the library and cafe. within the two masses is also the access to the river. the intervention is designed for people with different cultural backgrounds to reflect their commonalities. process intervention model.

the intervention breaks the separating wall and sits in the middle allowing access from a side to another. the notion behind the placement was to make the intervention a key point in the city. the library and the cafe on the second floor are mostly transparent allowing as much filtered light and as much interaction as possible. while the circulation space is mostly enclosed to reflect a different experience between the city and the center.

the corner
understanding how elements connect tectonically. the corner project investigates the importance of the tectonic connection between two elements on different axis. the project addresses tectonic qualities in addition to notions of light, form, structure, skin and ground. in my project i created two tectonic and enclosed walls that join at an open space. joint is the most transparent in the model and it is a point that can be seen from all the spaces around it.

open air war museum fundamental typologies of the horizontal and the vertical. the war museum investigates on a large spectrum of typologies, discussing tectonics, materiality, and volumetry in the form of various horizontal and vertical spacial modalities. starting with a construct that explores where a horizontal and vertical expansions meet. the project included an articulation of ground, wall, floor and ceiling and tower with meaningful unity. i designed the war museum on to reflect the experience of civilians, politicians and soldiers during a war.

the site is a reflection of a war though a journey that reflects different aspects of conflict. a diagonal angle breaks the site causing the transition between history and present, and between enclosed and open spaces. the museum is a representation of the experience of civilians, politicians and soldiers. finally ending at the highest point on the site, the peak. process site model.

opportunity.
the miami museum continues to investigate the relationship between empirical reality and speculative imagination. the project emphasizes on the movement from the access street space to the observational space including a public pathway to the beach.

five foot section model the five foot sectional model is an introduction to the miami museum project, that emphasizes the significance of the opportunities that result from a constraint. the model focused on the notion of scale and program in a narrow site between two buildings. being able to work on the model in section allowed me to articulate the underground conditions and discover more experiential opportunities.

the museum intends to have a natural and light form that sits between the two buildings around the given site. the skin is transparent allowing as much light as possible into the restaurant and museum. the construct not only includes a museum, cafe and a theatre but also a pathway and connection to the beach. final model.

the center includes several outdoor spaces that focus mainly on the interaction between the miami beach natives and the visitors. the outdoor gardens include public benches for the visitors to pause and appreciate the space that connects the buildings of the city to the beach. final model.

port tampa city library addition the old renovation
and the new, and extension of
the port tampa city library addition entails the renovation and extension of the existing library. the neoclassical library was built in the 1920’s it was to remain as is, with a maximum of two minor cuts done on the existing library. this project required a coneceptual strategy to devote a dynamic relationship between the old and the new, past and current, as well as tradition and present.

the movement and circulation through the library is a major notion that connects the old and the new in the model. the idea was to create as much interaction between the visitors as possible. since libraries tend to be less about books today, i believe the layering of history and the overlapping of the visitors is a powerful tool for exchanging data today.

highline library
programatic
study
the highline library required exploring different transitions between programmatic spaces. the library emphasizes the importance of the relationships within the library to create a program. this project also requires direct and indirect light exploration involving space and program. the programs vary from children to young adult spaces for reading, in addition to public spaces that serve the highline and the street.
112|
new york is a transparent city, the transition between the inside and the outside happens so subtle that you do not experience it suddenly. the gradual transition between the inside and the outside is a notion i meant to carry in the library. the most transparent part in the the library is the part that touches the highline, because of the high traffic.
114|
process models.
movement of light sketch, process model.
116|
the highline library is intended to manipulate light as a fundamental element enriching the relationship between program and spaces. a major notion in my model was to articulate light so that it lights up the levels below the highline. the model on the left explores the refraction of light from the highest level to the ground. to the right is a picture taken in new york that reflects different light qualities and functions. from there i have decided to articulate my structure so that it becomes part of the skin filtering light inside the building.

to allow maximum light filtering i used transparent glass to enclose the corners within the library. transaprent corners not only allow light in but also resonates a dialogue between the interior of the library and the exterior city.

the circulation within the library is a journey that starts at two high traffic points, the street and the highline park. information is easily obtained today by young adults that rarely go to libraries to gather information. therefore, through communication and interaction today young adults are able to share and discuss information.
124|
the library also included elements reflected from the highline park, the entrance to the library is a habitable staircase that seems like part of the highline. through the journey from either the street or the highline are several meditational and observational spaces, that allow the visitor to interact throughout internally and externally. final model.
