Introduction: History & Site Location

History of Um AlHamam: Um AlHamam is located in the central western of the city of Riyadh. This neighborhood is considered one of the most historical sites in Saudi Arabia which is overcrowded with residents and lacks services to its residence. The site has buildings which are in a very bad condition lacking ventilation and causing harm to its residence. The site also contains a military base unit in the middle of the neighbor which occupies a large portion of the site taking up spaces which could be used to provide services to the residence in the neighborhood. The site is known to be planned as the Dixoiads urban plan for the city but through time, streets have been disoriented and maneuvered which caused harm for the residence of the neighborhood.

Concept

Concept: Walkable Blocks Our concept was inspired by the urban theories, The Garden city by E. Howard, and The charter of new urbanism, the American charter, by P. Calthrope. The district was divided into eight separate blocks each with its own services such as, health clinics, retail plazas, and parking buildings, to increase the quality of life for the users, and based on the regulations of the district. All accessed by foot by the users of the surroundings residential units, minimizing the reliance on cars and encouraging the use of other transportation methods, divided into different paths, a bus path, a bicycle path, and a pedestrian path. One large block located at the center acts as a gathering space for all the surrounding seven blocks, it is a public space containing one large plaza and a large park.

Conceptual Diagrams c

Blocks The district was divided into eight separate blocks each with its own services, one large block located at the center acts as a gathering space for all the surrounding seven blocks, it is a public space containing one large plaza and a large park.

Roads The goal of minimizing the reliance on cars and encouraging the use of other transportation methods was achieved by creating different paths: a car path, that is only accessible outside of each block, connecting all eight to each other, a bus path and a bicycle path, providing circulation within each block, and a pedestrian path, connecting all the residential units to each other and to the block’s services.

Conceptual Diagrams c Services Each block is provided with its own services such as, health clinics, retail plazas, and parking buildings, to increase the quality of life for the users, and based on the regulations of the district. All accessed by foot by the users of the surroundings residential units to encourage walking.

Renovation Renovation of the condensed area in the district was done by converting 2 story buildings into 3 story buildings with small courts in between for a less dense environment and better air circulation and sun exposure. Some existing military buildings in the central block were moved to the empty lands in the surrounding blocks to create a a safe open environment in the center acting as a gathering public space containing the main plaza and park for the entire district.
