vonne and I were born 9,000 Y kilometres apart on different continents (Europe for me and South America for Yvonne).
We met on another continent (North America), before emigrating to a fourth (Australia). Since then, we’ve called Thailand and Papua New Guinea home. When we finally settled back into Australia in inner-city Brisbane, our friends were spread far and wide, except one couple we knew from Miami, Florida who lived locally. Modern cities, even nice ones, aren’t easy places to make friends, especially if you don’t work. We needed a community that would actually welcome us. Well, a couple of visits to Halcyon Waters was all it took. We made our first friend before moving in, when neighbour Karin asked, “Are you trying to break in or out?” “Out,” I replied, “I can’t work out how to lock the door!” The rest is history. We feel like a real part of the community, with a circle of friends and as much or as little involvement in activities as we choose.

Coffee, cakes, and kayaks
Anne Richards gets set for her paddle
t least twice a week (weather A permitting) a group of homeowners from Vision by Halcyon (QLD) drop their kayaks into the water and set off on an adventure.
Sometimes they stay close to home and sometimes they embark on a marathon paddle, all the while keeping fit and having fun with each other. Organiser and kayaking enthusiast Keith (who is also known as the Admiral) said the group started before COVID-19 first hit our shores in early 2020. “It really ramped up during those first few months of COVID,” Keith said. “People asked us about social distancing and I said, ‘well if you get a whack in the ear from a paddle, you’re too close.” 4
Jan Cattanach
He said the group has gone from strength to strength and they schedule paddles of varying lengths and destinations. “We often go out for breakfast or a coffee on a Saturday morning and we tend to stay reasonably close to Hope Island,” he said. “We might try Salacia at Paradise Point or head around to Sanctuary Cove.” Recently, four intrepid paddlers completed a 20km paddle up Saltwater Creek to the Coomera River and surrounds. Keith Briant (in front)
“We stopped for morning tea, lunch and a coffee in the afternoon as we were gone for five hours,” Keith said. Keith said the group has lots of fun and no-one ever gets left behind. “Lots of people were beginners when they started, but everyone does really well,” Keith said. “We had one member who couldn’t paddle more than 300 metres when she started and she’s now done a 16km paddle.” Keith said the group was another example of how homeowners get the most out of life from the community.

HALCYON PROMENADE
Maureen makes herself at home
Maureen Spratt, Halcyon Promenade
or more than half her life, F Maureen Spratt has called Caulfield Drive home. Maureen and her late husband Ray purchased the five-acre property in Burpengary East (QLD) more than 40 years ago and together they built their home and created a beautiful life with their two children. After Ray’s passing nine years ago, and with their children now having families and homes of their own, Maureen has been managing the large property. When the Stockland Halcyon Communities team offered to buy Maureen’s land, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to downsize to a bigger life without having
6
to change her street address. “I had heard of Halcyon Communities and actually used to run fashion parades at Halcyon Glades with a local boutique where I worked part-time.” “The more I thought about moving into a Halcyon community without having to move out of my street, I was convinced this would be the perfect place for me as it was on my own land.” she said. After making the decision to sell her property, Maureen has become the first home buyer at Halcyon Promenade. “While it was sad to say goodbye to our family home of 40 years, I’m glad
I will be staying in the area where I’ve got lots of friends,” Maureen said. “I’ve already picked my site and the home I want after visiting the display homes at B by Halcyon (Buderim QLD) with my daughter.” “I’m really looking forward to the security, sense of community and convenience that Halcyon Promenade will provide,” she said. In a special tribute to Maureen and her rich history in Burpengary East, Spratt Park will be constructed at the entry of the community. “I feel very honoured that Spratt Park has been included as part of the masterplan and I can’t wait to move in next year.”

Serendipity keeps the Stevens close to home
Gillian and Alan Stevens, Halcyon Promenade
fter visiting her sister’s home A at Halcyon Greens, Gillian Stevens fell in love with the idea of making the move to a luxury lifestyle community.
The only problem for her and husband Alan was the community’s Gold Coast location. “A lot of these communities are built outside of the city because you need so much land and we’ve always lived on the northside of Brisbane and we didn’t want to move away from the region,” Gillian said. “I’m also not a very confident highway driver, so as much as Halcyon Greens is a beautiful community, I couldn’t see myself living there because I would have to drive on the M1 to get back to the northside when I wanted to visit.” The Aspley couple then heard about another over 50s community at Burpengary East, a suburb just
10 minutes north of them, and put a deposit down on a home. “We were never really 100 per cent happy with what the other company was offering,” she said. “And then one day we went along to a coffee morning and a lady told me that Halcyon Communities were building one in the area.” “I saw what my sister has and the quality of Halcyon Communities so it was serendipitous the way it happened. I feel like we’ve gone full-circle.” Gillian said she and Alan were looking forward to the social aspect of community living. “We live in a lovely cul-de-sac here in Aspley and we have lovely neighbours but they are busy with their families and I think we could drop dead and nobody would miss us,” she laughed. “We’re looking forward to being around people in our age group
who are in a similar position to us and a big thing we liked is the fact that the homes have lovely patios, which allow for you to chat and connect with your neighbours.” Gillian said she has witnessed firsthand how life-changing moving to Halcyon Communities had been for her younger sister Julie. “Julie has taken up art again and now runs the community’s art class,” she said. “She’s also told me of a friend of hers who has had his health improve dramatically since he moved in as he is more active and connected.” The couple was also keen to make the move to a lifestyle community while they were still active and mobile enough to enjoy it. “We wanted to be the ones who made the decision to move,” she said. “Not our daughters or someone else in the family.” AUTUMN 2022 | 7

Country living without the maintenance
Kevin Brennan and Debbie Street, Halcyon Rise
aving spent almost three decades H living on acreage, the country feel of Halcyon Rise (QLD) is what first appealed to Kevin Brennan and Debbie Street.
The couple had spent the past 28 years living on six acres at Cedar Creek and loved the rural way of life but had grown tired of the maintenance and upkeep a property of that size demanded. “We loved the country feel of Rise and the sense of open space the community has,” Kevin said. “Even when you’re driving there, it feels like you’re in the country rather than being a stone’s throw from the M1.” The couple had looked at moving to a Halcyon Community a few years ago after visiting Halcyon Waters and Vision by Halcyon in Hope Island, on the northern Gold Coast. “We were really impressed by what we saw and what community living offered, but the timing wasn’t right,” Kevin said. Debbie added: “We were happy when we saw Halcyon Rise come along as we were ready to downsize from our acreage and my Mum is in an assisted living village nearby.” The couple has recently become the 50th homeowners to move into Halcyon Rise and they are wasting no time settling into community life. “We love it,” Debbie said. “Everyone is so friendly and we have landed in a fantastic street, we’re already having regular street parties.” “It’s been a really easy transition. Everyone helps everyone and we’re all here for the same reason.” Both are excited to get involved in new activities when the community’s facilities are completed, with Debbie looking forward to getting fit in the gym. “I’m keen to try pickleball and lawn bowls,” Kevin said. “We’ll try everything at first and work out what we enjoy.” Prior to the pandemic, Kevin and Debbie had planned to travel overseas but were now looking to visit Australian destinations including Tasmania and northern NSW. “It’s going to be great just being able to lock up and go and know that our house is safe,” Debbie said. s an avid gardener with A more than 40 years’ experience designing and
displaying cottage gardens, Barb Wickes was excited to create a new masterpiece at her new home at B by Halcyon in Buderim (QLD).
For 23 years, Barb and her husband, Rex, created and tended to a stunning garden in Buderim, complete with a Monet-inspired bridge and waterlily-covered lake, which featured on the ABC’s Gardening Australia in 2016. The duo sold their Mediterranean-style home and moved into B by Halcyon in January 2021, downsizing from their 7,500sqm subtropical garden oasis to a new home. “I am enjoying the maintenance of a small garden, which is much more manageable and is pretty to look at from
all areas,” she explained. “I’m finding my time spent in the garden is more productive as I can keep an eye on the plants, prune as needed and move plants around to fit the space.” Her tranquil back garden contains a considered selection of polyantha and Australian roses, salvias, camellia and hydrangea bushes, shrubs with burgundy foliage and perennial varieties such as agapanthus, asters, daylilies, dwarf grasses and begonias, to name a few. One of the first Australian gardeners to champion herbs, Barb is also passionate about growing edibles in her garden. “I like to go out to my garden and pick a salad, adding colour and various tastes from subtropical vegetables and herbs,” she said.

Barb co-founded The Perennial Poppies Group in 2000, which has members from around South East Queensland, and she is keen to establish a gardening club at B by Halcyon. “I’m looking forward to getting involved in the new community plot when we have access to the site, which will expand to include rose and food gardens,” she said. “Sharing is important too, and I hope this is what the gardening club will do. I’m very happy to share cuttings from my garden and interest others to grow plants. “It’s nice to be able to pick a posy of flowers from your garden for your neighbour. “I was a rather reluctant mover initially, but once we arrived at B by Halcyon, I’ve realised it was the best thing we could have ever done,” Barb enthused. HALCYON BERWICK
Couple buck the trend and head south for lifestyle THE WISEMANS ARE LEAVING QUEENSLAND FOR A NEW LIFE AT STOCKLAND’S HALCYON BERWICK
Dennis and Di Wiseman, Halcyon Berwick
hile they will miss the W Queensland weather, Dennis and Di Wiseman cannot wait to move to their new home at Stockland’s Halcyon Berwick, part of the Minta masterplanned community south of the Dandenong Ranges in Victoria.
The couple, who are originally from Melbourne and have lived on 14
Queensland’s Gold Coast for the past eight years, are bucking the trend and making the move south with their Shih Tzu Benji to be closer to their children and grandchildren. “We love Berwick,” Dennis said. “We used to go for weekend drives there for coffee or lunch and we never thought we would be able to afford to live there.”
“We did have kids living in Queensland, but they moved back to Melbourne so now it’s time for us to come back as well.” Di said she was looking forward to being able to spend more time with her family as two years of border closures and lockdowns had made it difficult. “It made us realise how far away we are
from everyone so if something happens, we’re isolated from the family and we’re not getting any younger,” she said. The couple said they are looking forward to immersing themselves back into Melbourne culture and activities, namely their beloved Western Bulldogs. “We love the footy and there’s not really much of it up here (in QLD) because it’s all about the rugby league,” Dennis said. “We’ve gone a couple of times (to watch the Gold Coast Suns) but it’s not the same. You can’t beat the atmosphere of 100,000 people at the MCG, so we‘ll definitely be going to more football games.” Di added: “And I can’t wait to get back to
Melbourne restaurants.” The couple are no strangers to lifestyle community living, having been at an over 50s community in Upper Coomera since they moved to Queensland eight years ago. “We love community living as you can get as involved in as much as you want or as little,” Dennis said. “You need to give everything a try at first and then work out what suits.” He said they were excited about moving into a new home in a new community. “Our facilities are a little tired here, so it will be great to be able to be the first ones to enjoy them at Halcyon Berwick,” he said. Dennis said he was looking forward to trying pickleball and getting involved in The Shed, while the pair would continue to play competitive lawn bowls. “We’re excited for this new chapter,” he said.
Dennis, Di and Benji
The Wisemans have chosen the Otway with a Gable facade and the Contrasting colour scheme. Inside they have gone for the Misty Morning colour choice. Di said she’s “very excited” to be moving into a brand new home. “After being in an older home, things are starting to get a little dated,” she said. “ We didn’t get to choose colours or design in our last home so I’m very pleased to be able to pick what we wanted in this one.”

Wheels keep turning for historic cart art yourself down to the South C Coast Restoration Society Inc. (SCRS) at Pimpama (QLD)
where rundown historic machinery is given a new lease on life.
Handy homeowners from Stockland’s Halcyon Greens have joined SCRS and have recently completed restoration work on a wooden horse-drawn wagon that had been donated to the Society. “It’s a general farm cart that might have been a merchant’s cart used to deliver goods house to house,” homeowner and hobby shed regular Ray Carter said. “It’s just a general, wooden-spoked farm cart that is drawn by either a donkey or small horse,” he said. “We don’t know the age of it, but it’s got to be in the vicinity of 100 years old. “There’s nothing to identify it other than a couple of blacksmith marks that we couldn’t figure out whose they were or where they came from.” A team of Greens homeowners
set to work to restore the cart as the SCRS needed their expertise, with the restoration taking more than a year to complete. “We had to learn the skills of a wheel wright,” Ray said. “All the wheels had to be remade as none of the spokes or hubs were reusable, and it was the most difficult part of the project as none of us had attempted this before.” Ray said the team managed to keep the steel tires, while most of the timber in the cart had rotted and had to be renewed. “All the iron work was stripped back to bare metal and repaired for reuse,” Ray said. Ray spent most of his career in heavy industries including chemical, power stations and mining after beginning his working life as an automotive apprentice – hence his love for restoring machinery.
“I spend a lot of time at the Heritage Society servicing and running machines from tractors to inline Blackstone diesel generators as there is a variety of equipment on display there,” he said. “I started restoring when I was an apprentice – we had a 1927 Essex that my stepfather and I were restoring up until he passed.” Ray and his wife Chris (who is active in the Halcyon Greens craft group) came to the community looking for a better lifestyle to enjoy their hard-earned retirement. “We both worked very hard long hours in our jobs because of the work we did, and now this is our time and we’re enjoying it the best we can,” he said.
The fully restored cart is on display at the South Coast Restoration Society Inc. located in Heritage Park at 193 Rifle Range Road, Pimpama.

Ray and Helen Banham have lived at Halcyon Landing (QLD) for the past seven years and said they value the network of friends they have made and say it plays an important role in maintaining good mental health. “We need people as much as people need us and our home is always open,” Helen said.

exciting. Australian over 50s are looking for well-designed, personalised housing, security, as well as access to facilities and activities to maintain active lifestyles and foster community connection.
Those fundamentals have not changed which is why we recently announced a new capital partnership with Mitsubishi Estate Asia (MEA) to develop and own some Halcyon Communities. We want more Australians to experience the lifestyle you know and love, and this partnership will allow us to do it at a faster pace. The beauty of the model means there is a great deal of diversity across all of our communities, which are currently available in South East Queensland and Victoria. There are many benefits to living in Halcyon Communities which include security, financial certainty, health and connection not to mention the many activities and recreational facilities which are available. There is a sense of security in knowing your home is safe within our gated communities, so you can lock and go without concerns over maintenance. In terms of financial security, there is greater certainty over the cost of living as the land lease model wraps many household expenses into your weekly Site Fee. We also help you keep a lid on your electricity bills through the design and construction of our superior energy-efficient homes.

Halcyon Communities to usher in a new era of growth
Living in a lifestyle community is affordable to many not just a few. The cost of living and the greater benefits make this lifestyle accessible and easy. A great advantage of the model is there are no entry or exit fees, no stamp duty and homeowners keep 100 per cent of their capital gains, so it’s easy to get in and easy to get out. We believe all Australian seniors should be offered the chance to experience the lifestyle our communities offer and we are committed to bringing this opportunity to as many people as possible. Over the coming year I look forward to sharing details of a number of new communities that offer a broad range of home and lifestyle options. We are also planning to hold a number of “Stockland Listens” events with Halcyon Communities. We look forward to continuing to maintain the open dialogue with our homeowners. AUTUMN 2022 | 21

After 30 years of married life, Merle and Graeme have taken the plunge and gotten themselves a new puppy, a Maltese X Shih Tsu named Jack. The couple who live at Halcyon Parks (QLD), had both owned dogs before they met, but they were working dogs rather than an “inside dog”. “It’s like having a little baby,” Merle said of the four-month-old puppy. “We are enjoying this delightful little fur boy who has joined our family. “ Graeme said Jack looks as though he has been to the hair salon as he has “white tints” on his black fur. “He loves shoes and got stuck into one of my old bowls shoes,” he said. The couple have been quick to introduce their new family member to the rest of the community at Halcyon Parks. “He loves people and everyone loves him,” Graeme said. Merle added: “He loves being introduced to other fur kids in the community when we take him for a walk.”

Art attack TREVOR RENN SHARES HIS PASSION FOR CREATIVITY AND THE HALCYON LAKESIDE COMMUNITY IN A COLOURFUL MURAL.
Trevor Renn, Halcyon Lakeside
espite a lifelong appreciation D of art galleries and exhibitions, Trevor shelved his high-school
artistic ambitions for a career as a civil engineer and any creative pursuits took a back seat to a busy life filled with family, sport and work.
“Deep down I always wanted to try my hand at being creative, so when I retired and moved to Halcyon Lakeside (QLD), I suddenly had the time and an amazing art room at my disposal,” Trevor recalled. “I turned up one September morning in 2018 and gave it a go.” After a few attempts at pencil sketches of landscapes, Trevor found his creative muse in portraits of his family, including his four children and his son’s dog, Chewy. He created his first painting of the Halcyon Lakeside bowling green in May 2019 and
has been painting ever since, including a portrait of his mother and a self-portrait. “I’m still learning and haven’t developed my own style yet, so I am trying different techniques from abstract to hyperrealism,” he said. Trevor enjoys painting in the art room, either with a group or on his own. After chatting to the art group about brightening up the space, he set himself a challenge to create a mural. Inspired by a caricature painting of the homeowners and community he had seen at a Halcyon Parks art show, Trevor designed a mural layout that depicted all the activities available at Lakeside in late 2019. Then COVID-19 hit and Trevor was unable to access the art room, so he set up his easel on the back veranda at home and busied himself by painting a beach landscape.
After the lockdown hiatus, he picked up a brush and completed the mural in late January, ticking off a list of more than 50 activities that included everything from pickleball, golf and stand-up paddleboarding to yoga, pie-tasting, calligraphy and reading in the library. In addition, Trevor has depicted his onsite wedding to wife Lynne in March 2019 as well as other celebratory events at Halcyon Lakeside and has even painted the local lake wildlife within the mural. “The mural is a good talking point and offers a challenge for people to identify all the activities included in the artwork.” “I guess the mural is a reflection of what life is like at Halcyon Lakeside and the many activities to get involved in – the facilities here are really an extension of each home,” Trevor explained. An historic connection to Logan
Ian Roy, Halcyon Rise
rom their farm on the F vast green olive fields in Minden, QLD, to the scenic
Logan Reserve, Ian and his wife Dot are connected to the region in more ways than one.
Owners of the award-winning olive business Coolana Olives since 1998, the couple moved from their farm to Stockland’s Halcyon Rise last year.
While out exploring the neighbouring area, Ian remembered that his great great grandfather Thomas Beswick was a pioneer migrant from England. “I had done a little bit of research into the Beswick side before, and my middle name is also Beswick.
Ian contacted local historian Dr Hilda Maclean to look at his genealogy, but unfortunately, nothing was found. “So I tried to look into it but have drawn a blank so far, but that’s okay,” he said. All Ian knows is that Thomas Beswick travelled with his wife and two children to Australia from England aboard the ship ‘Juliet’ in 1884.
“We have a really good feel for the area,” Ian said. “You know how you go to some towns and immediately go; ‘I love this place’ because you get a good feel for the town? “Yeah, we’ve got a really good feeling here.” Ian a

The couple certainly know olives, spending eight years as judges across Australia, at shows such as the Royal Sydney and Brisbane Fine Food Shows, Australian Olive Association Oil Competition in Sydney, with Dot being the first female olive judge in Queensland.
“When I was researching my great-great-grandfather, I found out he came to Brisbane in 1884 and settled into Logan.”
Although he hasn’t been able to find more information that ties Thomas to Logan, Ian still feels a deep sense of familiarity with the area. “I don’t know if it’s connected to me, but it feels good,” he said. In the meantime, Ian spends his days enjoying golf out at the Meadowbrook Golf Club and socialising with the Halcyon Rise community. AUTUMN 2022 | 33
