“We keep pinching ourselves thinking, is this really ours? Is this really happening?”

A milestone moment

Meet John and Sharon Rasmussen: Stockland Halcyon’s 5,000th homeowners.

John and Sharon Rasmussen’s journey to becoming the 5,000th homeowners in Stockland Halcyon is one of downsizing, connection, and finding a sense of belonging at Halcyon Promenade. Married for nearly 46 years, the couple took the leap from a spacious two-story family home in Narangba to a modern, resort-style lifestyle. “We feel like we’re living in a really nice place on the coast,” says John.

Their move in December 2024 marked the culmination of years of planning and dreaming, with some adjustments along the way – including a temporary stay in a caravan. This step proved invaluable, easing the downsizing from their twostory home and even led to a new friendship with another couple on the same journey.

John and Sharon’s decision to choose Halcyon was a mix of research, gut feeling, and the charm of the community. “We came to the display homes and just had a really good feel as soon as we walked in” says John. Initially hesitant, they leaned on friends in a similar living situation for advice, ultimately finding comfort in Halcyon’s unique model.

Their chosen design, the Avalon, stood out for its storage space and thoughtful layout.

“Everything else we looked at [outside of Halcyon] just didn’t compare.”

Moving in just days before Christmas, John and Sharon were greeted not just by their stunning new home but by a thriving, welcoming community. “We went to the New Year’s Eve party before we’d even unpacked,” says John. From happy hours at the sports hub to a bustling calendar of activities, the couple has quickly immersed themselves in Halcyon life.

The Rasmussens have also reconnected with old friends and have made some new ones, all within the gates of their new neighbourhood. They met a couple during the display home tours who had a similar journey, and now they’re practically neighbours.

An active lifestyle is central to the Rasmussens’ daily routine. John, who has completed four half-marathons and a full marathon, continues to run with a local group and plans to explore scenic pathways around Halcyon Promenade. While Sharon enjoys hitting

the gym and is thrilled about having the Wellness Centre conveniently right at their doorstep.

“I can picture ourselves settled in—going for a long run, diving in the pool, and coming back home for brekkie”. It’s a routine they’re both looking forward to he says.

The couple also values the peace-of-mind Halcyon provides. “It feels like everyone looks out for each other here,” John explains. “If

something happens or you need help, there’s always someone around.”

As Sharon works from home in accounts administration and John enjoys his well-earned retirement, they are settling into a life filled with a newfound sense of ease and excitement.

Becoming the 5,000th homeowners feels serendipitous to the Rasmussens. “It’s just meant to be,” they say. “We made the right decision, and it’s a proud moment to be part of Halcyon’s history.”

For the Rasmussens, Halcyon isn’t just a new address; it’s a new chapter.

Living lightly, feeling good

Taking care of the planet is the impactful way to cultivate a sense of wellbeing and purpose – and all it takes is a few simple tweaks to your day-to-day. Here are some easy sustainable choices that are rewarding for both you and your environment.

Green thumb

Not only is gardening a natural stress reliever, but maintaining a green space can reduce pollution and help combat climate change. Get started by growing your own fresh and organic produce or protect local biodiversity by planting native species.

Reduce and reuse

Less is more when it comes to sustainable living. Ditch single-use plastics, opt for reusable products like drink bottles or bags, and think twice before buying something new. Becoming a conscious consumer leaves a lighter footprint on the planet (as well as your wallet) and is a great way to appreciate what you already have.

Meat-free meals

Embracing a plant-based diet has a myriad of benefits for your body and the planet. From better gut health to reduced risks of cancer or heart disease, greener eating has been proven to improve your health while encouraging a better environmental impact. Plus, there’s no need to go cold turkey; simply adopting a flexitarian diet by reducing your meat intake is a big step in the right direction.

Keep it clean

Detox your home by swapping out harmful chemicals in favour of eco-friendly cleaning products that are better for your health and don’t pollute rivers and oceans through the drain. Look out for products that come in recyclable or biodegradable packaging or try making your own natural cleaning solutions using vinegar and baking soda.

A labour of love

Stockland Halcyon Lakeside becomes an esteemed author’s writing haven.

For Judy Masters, writing has always been more than a pastime; it’s a lifelong passion that found its true home at Halcyon Lakeside. As J Mary Masters, her published pen name, Judy has drawn on her background in magazine publishing and childhood growing up in rural Rockhampton to pen six novels. “I remember at age 14 declaring I wanted to be a writer,” Judy says. “So, it’s been a delayed ambition, but it was always there.” That ambition took root in her upbringing on a cattle property, inspiring her debut novel, Julia’s Story. Set against the backdrop of World War II, the book explores themes of love and societal expectations, laying the foundation for her Belleville series.

Halcyon Lakeside has proven to be the ideal environment for Judy’s creativity to flourish. “It’s quiet, which is essential for a writer,” she says. “It’s friendly [and] it’s a lovely environment.”

“We’ve been here more than six years, and we’re very pleased we made the choice of Halcyon Lakeside.”

Although Judy doesn’t always participate in community activities due to her writing commitments, her neighbours are among her biggest fans. “It’s not unusual at a community function to have a resident come up to me to tell me they’ve enjoyed reading my books and I’m really thrilled when that happens,” she says. Judy has even donated her series to the Halcyon Lakeside library.

Judy’s career in magazine publishing equipped her with a unique perspective on the business of books. “I understood the business of publishing more than most authors do,” she explains. This knowledge has been instrumental in promoting and sharing her work, which blends

entertainment with explorations of societal shifts, particularly the evolving role of women. “My books are entertainment… I try to explore the changing role of women in a subtle way or at least in ways that reflect the times,” Judy says. Her readers, predominantly women over 60, often find her stories evoke memories of their own lives and the societal norms they navigated.

Balancing the solitude of writing with the social opportunities at Halcyon Lakeside comes naturally to Judy. “Writers are, by nature, solitary creatures,” she admits. Her writing days are often interwoven with part-time magazine work, caring for her elder sister, and enjoying the support of her husband, who, she notes, “makes a great coffee.” Ideas sometimes find their way onto the back of a Coles docket, but most writing happens in her home office, surrounded by books that inspire and guide her.

Judy’s literary journey continues to evolve. She’s currently working on the final Belleville novel, a historical fiction titled Dora, and a contemporary work reminiscent of Jane Harper’s storytelling. Excitingly, Julia’s Story is set to reach new audiences through audio and large print formats, thanks to a recent contract with a British company.

For retirees considering a creative pursuit, Judy’s advice is clear: “Do something that is fulfilling and rewarding –if you want to start writing, you just have to ignore the voice that says you can’t do it.”

Reflecting on her journey, Judy treasures the autonomy and freedom that her next chapter has brought. “I’ve just changed careers,” she says. At Halcyon Lakeside, Judy Masters is doing what she loves most – writing stories that entertain, inspire, and connect.

Lamingtons with a twist

Classic lamingtons, but make them bite-sized and fun! These snackable lamingtons put a playful twist on the Aussie favourite, combining fluffy cake, chocolate coating, and a coconut finish – perfect for a street party or bring-along plate.

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE SPONGE:

125g unsalted butter, softened

1 cup caster sugar

1/2 tsp vanilla extract

3 eggs

2 cups flour

4 tsp baking powder

1/2 cup full cream milk

FOR THE ICING:

4 cups icing sugar (confectionary sugar), sifted

1/3 cup melted chocolate

1 tbsp unsalted butter

150ml boiling water

4 cups desiccated coconut

FOR THE FILLING:

1 punnet of strawberries, diced

1 cup whipped cream

1 tbsp white sugar

METHOD

Preheat your oven to 180°C (fan-forced). Grease a square cake pan and line it with baking paper.

Sift the flour and baking powder into a bowl and set aside.

Using an electric mixer on medium-high speed, beat the butter, sugar, and vanilla together until light and fluffy.

Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition to ensure a smooth, lumpfree batter.

Gently fold in the flour mixture, followed by the milk.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan, spreading it evenly. Bake for 25 minutes. Allow the cake to stand. Once cooled, cut the cake into small squares and freeze for 1 to 1.5 hours.

In a heatproof bowl, combine the icing ingredients and mix until smooth. The icing should be syrup-like but not watery. Spread the desiccated coconut evenly in a shallow bowl or pan with a wide surface area.

Dip each piece of cake into the icing, rolling it to coat all sides. Transfer the coated cake into the coconut and roll it to evenly cover all sides. Place on a tray to set.

To assemble, add a dollop of whipped cream and a spoonful of strawberries on top of half the lamingtons. Use the remaining halves to sandwich them, creating a layered treat. Secure with skewers and serve.

The best of both worlds

After 40 years of calling Craigieburn home, Ross and Debra Finlayson are embarking on an exciting new adventure.

Their next chapter is at Halcyon Highlands, a community designed for freedom, flexibility, and low-maintenance living. With a love for travel and a zest for an active lifestyle, this couple has found the perfect place to embrace their golden years. Here’s how Halcyon Highlands has become their ideal “lock-up-and-go” solution.

“We have often spoken about moving to a retirement or lifestyle village,” Debra says. “My mum bought into one, and we saw the connections she made, the security and independence it gave her. [But] when is the right time to make the move?”

For Ross and Debra, the answer became clear: now. Instead of waiting, they decided to dive in and take full advantage of the lifestyle amenities while they could still enjoy them. Their decision was sparked by their daughter, who booked them for a presentation at Halcyon Highlands. Just two days later, they signed up for their dream home.

“There was a house design and location we loved,” Debra says. “We realised you never know when is the right time so we signed up.”

ADVICE FOR OTHERS

For those contemplating a similar move, Ross and Debra offer practical advice:

• Ask questions: Write down everything, no matter how small, and get answers from the helpful sales team.

• Make a pros and cons list: Discuss every point to ensure you’re making the right decision for your circumstances.

• Talk to current residents: Their experiences can provide invaluable insights.

“We realised we are buying into a lifestyle, not only a home.”

Ross and Debra’s love for travel played a big role in their decision. While overseas trips have given way to road trips around Australia now that they have an adorable three-year-old Cockalier, Gizmo. And they’ve kept their cabin on the Murray River in Tocumwal as a beloved getaway. Splitting their time between Melbourne and Tocumwal will now be easier than ever, thanks to Halcyon Highlands’ low-maintenance lifestyle.

“We do not have to worry about maintenance of the lawns, plants, mail or security of the property while we are not there,” Ross says.

But it’s not just about security; it’s about connection. Even before moving in, the couple has attended Halcyon Highlands events and started forming new friendships. They’ve already organised regular lunches with other residents. “Each time the group gets bigger, we can only imagine that when we move in and the Community Centre is open, it will be a great environment.”

With one daughter just a 20-minute walk away, family remains a cornerstone of their lives. “We have discussed

meeting up midway at Senol Mall for coffee or pizza or play with the dog at the nearby park,” Debra says.

With plans to enjoy the pool, lawn bowls, and an active social calendar, Ross and Debra are ready to settle in and start this exciting new chapter at Halcyon Highlands. After all, Halcyon Highlands isn’t just a place to live; it’s a place to thrive!

Life in full swing

From coast to coast, follow Sue and David Richardson’s journey through three Stockland Halcyon communities.

Sue and David Richardson are living proof that it’s never too late – or too early – to embrace new horizons, especially when those horizons come with friendly neighbours, sparkling pools, and lush bowling greens.

For this duo, life at Stockland Halcyon communities has been one big adventure, with each stop on the way offering something special.

Their Stockland Halcyon story began over seven years ago on the Gold Coast. But it almost didn’t happen. When their daughter-in-law suggested they check out Stockland Halcyon Greens, Sue’s imagination ran wild. “I imagined a retirement village with small, poky rooms and someone cooking all our meals,” she says with a laugh. But one visit to Stockland Halcyon Greens turned scepticism into delight. “We were sold straight away once we saw what life in a Stockland Halcyon community was all about,” she says.

couple made their second move, this time to Stockland Halcyon Rise in Logan Reserve. “The sense of community at both Greens and Rise has been marvellous,” David says. The switch wasn’t just about proximity to loved ones; it was also about embracing a fresh chapter in their Stockland Halcyon journey.

At Stockland Halcyon Rise, the Richardsons quickly became known for their active involvement. Whether it was Sue lending her skills as the bowls secretary or David manning the barbecue at community events, their calendar was always full.

“I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else but in a Halcyon community. We just love it!”

For three years, Sue and David immersed themselves in the easy breezy lifestyle at Stockland Halcyon Greens. “Living there was like being on holiday every day,” Sue says.

“You get your own beautiful, private home in a secure estate with luxury on-site facilities, loads of social events, and plenty of friendly faces.”

Sue and David’s love for Stockland Halcyon Greens went beyond the amenities. It was the friendships that made their time there unforgettable. David fondly recalls, “We made so many real, lifelong friends –not just Facebook friends you never see, but people you know you can count on.”

In time, family called them closer. The

Their shared love for lawn bowls also blossomed. With a growing group of 120 bowlers, they found both camaraderie and a healthy dose of competition.

“I do like to win,” David admits, “but I’m just as happy for the get together afterwards with lunch and a couple of wines.”

Now, the Richardsons are gearing up for their third Stockland Halcyon adventure – this time at Stockland Halcyon Coves on the Sunshine Coast. “We’ve always dreamed of living on the Sunny Coast,” David says. “You have beautiful beaches and charming country towns right on your doorstep, and with easy motorway access, we can get to Brisbane in no time. We’re sure our family and friends will love visiting.”

What makes it so easy for Sue and David to ‘hop’ from one community to another? Under Stockland Halcyon’s innovative land lease model, they’ve been able to enjoy the benefits of traditional homeownership without the burden of exit fees. “Once you’ve experienced the Stockland Halcyon model –where everything is taken care of with no rates to worry about and no capital gains tax – you can’t imagine buying a regular suburban house again,” David says.
