FOREWORD
In this edition to the winter edition Weoflcome My Halcyon Days. I hope you are staying safe and keeping well. The last three months have been a challenging time for all of us and a moment in history we won’t forget. Writing a foreword during a pandemic is not an easy task as none of us have a crystal ball to tell us when the world will return to ‘normal’. Instead, it’s a time to be grateful for our communities and turn our focus on the way we have all collaborated, adapted and thrived during this period. Firstly, I’d like to send a shout out to the Halcyon Glades community. Seeing the way our neighbours and friends have come together during this time has been heartwarming. From grocery shopping, walking pets if owners are in isolation to checking in with a simple phone call. Tough times can certainly be made better with the right people around you. Now, let’s talk about this edition of My Halcyon Days. There’s a host of feel-good stories celebrating acts of kindness within the Halcyon communities. The RemoteControlled Yacht Club members at Vision by Halcyon talk about their new hobby while wine connoisseur, Mike Glajnaric shows us how to find the perfect drop of Sauvignon Blanc. Aine Rice tells us how she got into Pilates and my favourite columnist, Geoff Shearer is back with a funny story. I think we can all relate to his story of whether you should dye the ol’ salt and pepper! Enjoy this edition,

COVER STORY
Heart of Halcyon shines during COVID-19 THE SPIRIT OF HOMEOWNERS HAS NEVER BEEN MORE EVIDENT AS WE ALL COME TO TERMS WITH THE COVID-19 CHANGES
here are countless stories of how our homeowners have T reached out to their neighbours and the broader communities outside of the gates to help during the last few months.
Together with our homeowners, Halcyon has endeavoured to look after the safety and wellbeing of our communities while also trying to lift everyone’s spirit. Our home owners and staff are the glue which bind our communities together, offering assistance, support and trying to brighten everyone’s day with regular phonecalls or organising for Mr Whippy to give everyone a sweet treat.

CARE ARMY – GREENS The homeowners at Greens rallied the community to create a group responsible for helping anyone who needed it. Keith Tonkies is the Deputy Chairman of the Homeowner’s Committee (HOC) and approached Community Manager Shannon Dunn to send an email asking for volunteers to be a part of the group. “We got 20 volunteers and they are doing various things such as helping with shopping or taking people to medical appointments,” Keith said. “We’ve also got dog walkers and others helping with gardening.”
Keith Tonkies and Dawn Wilson
COUNSELLING WITH A CUPPA – GREENS Greens’ homeowner Dawn Wilson is also part of the Care Army, and is a qualified and practicing counselor. She has offered complimentary and confidential sessions to anyone who needed some support during the restrictions. “I mentioned it to Shannon and said I was happy to meet with anyone who felt they needed it, just for a cup of tea and a chat or something more,” she said. “This is my community and I love it, so I wanted to make sure anyone who needed some support could get it.”
Peter Fahey bringing joy to the street
WANDERING MINSTREL - GREENS Keen singer and guitarist Peter Fahey decided to bring the music to the people, wandering through the streets of Halcyon Greens so the community could have some entertainment. “I figured if we couldn’t have any live entertainment, then why not improvise,” Peter said. “We’ve had a few birthdays recently so I’ve gone around and sung Happy Birthday Sweet 16 to them and one guy has an Italian background, so I sung That’s Amore to him.”
A true entertainer, Peter’s musical talents were featured on the local Gold Coast Channel 7 News and in the Courier Mail and Gold Coast Bulletin – a welcome antidote to some of the heavier news we’ve been used to seeing each day. “We’re all focussed on doing the right thing with social distancing and trying hard to beat this thing, so I thought it was a good way to try and make people smile,” he said.
WINTER 2020 | 5
GARDENING - GLADES Ann McKenzie has a magic touch with flora and fauna, her green thumb a welcome addition to her neighbour’s garden. Ann started helping her neighbour Juliana, who has been unwell, so she doesn’t have to worry about it or pay a professional to come in and maintain it. “Juliana has a beautiful garden and I wanted to make sure it stayed that way, so I was happy to help,” Ann said. DRESS UP FOR BIN DAY Inspired by the Australian invented trend, homeowners from many of our communities put on their best fancy dress to take their bin out. There were some brilliant costumes including Superwoman, Egyptian pharaohs, cowboys, 1920s flappers and one couple dressed in their wedding finery.
MR WHIPPY There’s something about hearing the Mr Whippy van music which creates excitement and brings back memories of childhood. All of our homeowners were treated to a surprise visit from Mr Whippy, delivering ice-creams and good cheer.
MOBILE LIBRARY When our facilities were closed community managers introduced a daily book delivery service, ferrying around library selections to those who have been choosing to isolate or prefer to stay at home.
ANZAC DAY BISCUITS
Gay and Murray Speden
LifeBeginsatHalcyon.com.au
Halcyon purchased 4500 ANZAC Day biscuits from a local bakery in Helensvale, close to our HQ in Hope Island. We then distributed them to all homeowners in our seven communities to mark the very special day.

TAKEAWAY NIGHTS TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESS
SURGICAL MASKS AND SCRUB HATS - LAKESIDE
All of our communities have had a number of takeaway nights to support local businesses in their area. Pizza, Italian, potatoes and Thai were just some of the fare on offer, which homeowners ate in their driveways or inside their homes.
When Noela Troyhan discovered Buderim Hospital’s maternity ward was in dire need of surgical masks, the Halcyon Lakeside homeowner came to the rescue. “My daughter Tara is a midwife and she told me they were short of masks so she asked me if I could help as it is difficult for the nurses to be able to do their job and stay 1.5 metres away from the mums and bubs,” she said.
Paul and Sue Murdoch
Enlisting two of her friends, Noela’s group managed to sew 45 masks which are made from scraps of fabric, lined in a soft cotton and have a surgical filter inserted to protect the medical staff who are wearing them.
Peter Fahey
BIRTHDAY CAKE DELIVERY There’s no reason why you can’t have a birthday celebration even in isolation. Community managers have been busy delivering birthday cakes to anyone who has had their birthday during the past few months.
COMMUNITY CARE – Coffee van deliveries to communities – Community Manager Kate’s weekly trivia quiz at Parks – Rockstar scavenger hunt at Greens – Ukelele concerts at Vision
SHOPPING - GLADES Described by their neighbours as “sweethearts”, Stuart and Toni-Maree Eden are first to volunteer to help those in their Halcyon Glades community. As soon as the restrictions were introduced in mid-March jumped in to assist anyone who needed shopping done or transport to medical appointments or the like. “We love living here and we just want to make sure everyone is ok and if they need help, we’re here for them,” Toni-Maree said. “We’re just happy to be able to help.”

THE HALCYON WAY
There’s no better time to be living at Halcyon Halcyon Joint Managing Directors Paul Melville and Dr Bevan Geissmann
ustralia really is the lucky country. It’s something A we’ve all known for most of our lives, but the current pandemic has proved it again. Our federal and state governments quick and decisive action has put us in an enviable position in terms of flattening the curve. Yes there’s been some pain and there will continue to be as we navigate our way out of it, but we have managed to do a lot better than most other countries in the world. These unusual times have shown there’s no better time to be living in a Halcyon community. Every day we hear more stories of homeowners going above and beyond to help their neighbours and the wider community outside of the gates. Our community managers have also made sure they’re in daily contact with homeowners who were self-isolating or who live alone. In fact, they are in constant contact with all homeowners whether it be by telephone or through the library book run and other activities they implemented to keep everyone’s mind and body active through these unprecedented times. At times like these it helps to see the funny side - like the story of new homeowners from the ACT who got across the QLD border in their caravan before the borders closed. It’s almost like a spy or war movie when the heroes made it to “safety” just in time. For the introverts among us – being told to stay at home, read books, watch TV and spend time on the couch is like a dream come true.
But on a serious note, as a company we are keeping calm and carrying on as we move through the different stages of the COVID-19 restrictions. We continue to build our two new communities B by Halcyon at Buderim and Halcyon Rise at Logan Reserve, as well as Stage 4 at Halcyon Greens in Pimpama. From the start of the COVID-19 restrictions in March, Halcyon has settled 30 new homes worth approximately $20 million, and laid 24 slabs. We are committed to continuing to build quality homes and in turn, keep our staff, contractors and suppliers working as we all endeavour to rebuild our economy. We’re very excited that the last piece in our expansive $15 million Recreation and Leisure precinct at Greens, The Lodge, has been completed. It’s the final and most formal of the four clubhouses (including the golf club) homeowners get to enjoy and the largest in the country. We are looking forward to life returning to something resembling a little more normal as we all move through the different stages of restrictions being eased both here in QLD and across the country. Here’s to staying happy and healthy. Dr Bevan Geissmann and Paul Melville Halcyon Joint Managing Directors

Radio-controlled yacht club sets sail READY, SET, RACE!
radio-controlled yacht A club has set sail at Vision by Halcyon with more than 11 ‘boaties’ taking to the helm to enjoy a day by the water while keeping fine motor skills in check.
Located at Hope Island on the Gold Coast, Vision by Halcyon homeowner Laurie Hinchcliff said the sport is perfect for waterside living. “I’ve been sailing since I was 12 years old, so when a few homeowners mentioned they needed another interest, we all jumped at the chance to start a Vision Radio-Controlled Yacht Club,” Laurie said. “First, we needed to choose a boat which was the Dragon Flight 95 as it was best suited to the water conditions of the canal at Hope Island.” “Dragon Flight 95 comes in a kit, and we assembled them as a group and added boat numbers, so we knew whose boat belonged to who.”
LifeBeginsatHalcyon.com.au
Laurie Hinchcliff
“It was quite fun putting them in the water for the first time and practicing as a group; however, as we have kayaks here at Vision, we have elected one homeowner act as the rescue boat in case a yacht runs aground,” Laurie laughs. Not only is radio-controlled yacht sailing beneficial for your hand and eye coordination, it’s also great for your mental health. “Operating a yacht is like learning to drive a manual car, once you get the hang of it, you don’t have to think about it,” Laurie said. “It keeps you on your toes and you have to concentrate on getting the boat around the course.”
Laurie said they’re currently racing in groups of two and can’t wait to show the grandkids their new skills. “It’s great to get out by the water, enjoy the fresh air and keep the mind active.” Laurie moved from his home in the Illawarra, south of Sydney to Vision by Halcyon four years ago and said he enjoys everything the Gold Coast has to offer. “The community is fantastic, and we love living by the Broadwater,” Laurie said. “There’s no better place to drop anchor!”
Laurie Hinchcliff, John Woolnams, Brian Treleaven
Laurie’s tips for radio-controlled yacht racing: • Find the right boat to suit water conditions
• Canals, lakes and
ponds generally provide the best racing venues
• Observe the racing rules of sailing
• Watch the weather
and strong currents if racing in saltwater
• Maintain your sailboat
and wash the saltwater off thoroughly
• Watch out for
other watercraft
• Keep practicing; don’t Ralph Langdon

What’s Bocce? A GAME DATING BACK TO ANCIENT EGYPT, BOCCE IS STILL A FAVOURITE PASTIME AMONGST FRIENDS

Elly Davidson, Annie Engelbarts and Stuart and Toni-Maree Eden enjoying a game together at Halcyon Glades
hether played on a grassy lawn W or at the beach, Bocce is still a favourite pastime played in the
company of friends across the world.
Stuart and Toni-Maree Eden, homeowners at Halcyon Glades, said they have been playing Bocce for many years. “We don’t play competitively, but we do have lots of fun, and it’s a great way to socialise and stay active,” Stuart said. “There are usually four people to a game, but you can also play with up to eight players. “Everyone takes their turn with lots of banter and laughter in between, half the time we forget to keep score! “It’s been a great way to meet our neighbours and get to know everyone in the Halcyon Glades community,” Stuart said. Toni-Maree said Bocce is then usually followed by a round of Skittles, an outdoor game that mirrors indoor bowling. “Skittles is fun to play outdoors on the lawn,” Toni-Maree said. “You only get three throws with the aim to knock down all the skittles.” Stuart and Toni-Maree moved from their Glasshouse Mountains home to Halcyon Glades in October 2019. “I can’t believe we only moved in last October, it feels like we’ve been here forever,” Stuart said.
Facts about Bocce • Bocce can be traced back to 5200 B.C, discovered in a painting found in an Egyptian tomb • It was then developed into its present form in Italy and is now the third mostplayed sport in the world • The Pallino is the smaller ball, which starts the game. Pallino means ‘little ball’ in Italian • The word ‘bocce’ means bowls. The word ‘baci’ means ‘kiss’ which is why the term is used when a ball nestles up to the Pallino
How to set up a game of Bocce 1. Gather your bocce ball set. A standard set can be found online ranging from $20 to $50
“It’s a great community with a never-ending list of things to be part of and people to meet.”
2. Choose your teams with either two single players, two teams of two, or two teams of four players each
Toni-Maree especially loves to take part in line dancing, a sport that now sees her practising in her garage.
3. Set up your game area. This can be a grassy lawn or on the beach
“Line dancing is great for the mind and body,” Toni-Maree said. “It keeps me fit, and it’s enjoyable to do when you’re with a group of others who love to dance.”
4. Flip a coin to decide who throws the Pallino 5. Each team takes turns to throw their bocce balls 6. The Bocce closest to the Pallino is the winner! WINTER 2020 | 17

T
he Daintree is the latest home design being offered at B by Halcyon, our newest rainforest inspired lifestyle community at Buderim on the Sunshine Coast.
B by Halcyon Project Director Chris Carley said architects Base have excelled in this latest twostorey design, offering spacious living with the luxury of a four-car garage and can be built in either a traditional or contemporary style. “Downstairs is designed to accommodate four cars for
discerning buyers who have a few extra toys such as jetskis, boats, a sports car they’re restoring or just extra space for a large workshed,” he said. “Alternatively the layout can be customised to provide for a two car garage with luxury media room.” Mr Carley said the home incorporates a landscaped entry which opens into a welcoming foyer including lift. “Our architects have created our entry to feel as if its floating,” he said.
“Take a ride upstairs in your own private lift and be greeted by a magnificent open plan living area with expansive panoramic views.” And it is upstairs where the real living starts.
The master suite is a luxurious private sanctuary with his-andhers’ vanities and separate walkin robe, while the guest suite is located at the other end of the home allowing guests to relax and retire to their own space.
A spacious front verandah allows homeowners to spread out and enjoy the canopy of established trees in the foreground while the open plan design allows the breeze to flow through the living spaces.
Naturally, high-quality fixtures and finishes are used throughout the home as well as clever use of storage, a walk-in linen cupboard and an ease of connection between the kitchen and living spaces.
“There’s also a rear patio which will make a perfect morning retreat as you settle in for coffee and soak up the Buderim air,” Mr Carley said.
“This home offers design and space for those who think downsizing is overrated,” Mr Carley said.
There are only eight double storey homes available and are priced from $859,000. Sales office open Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm. 42 Whites Road, Buderim Call 1800 050 555

like I could be taking salt out of my Lto ooks diet…hang on, I spelled that wrong, meant write “dye it”. (Oh yeah, this column is going to be pun-loaded. You’ve been warned).
You see, I went grey young. By the time I was in my late 20s I was what you termed “salt and pepper”. In recent years, it’s been distinctly less peppery. Hence the wife has been suggesting – oh, I don’t know for how long, maybe decades – that I dye my hair. I’ve stubbornly resisted; arguing that it’s “dignified”, “not worrying me”, and that it’s my hair and I don’t care what other people think. “But you could look your age, if not younger,” she teased. “Don’t be a George Clooney, be a dashing James Bond for me.” Well, that threw me. She’s always been a Bruce Willis fan. Why throw 007 into the mix? Just come straight out and tell me to, “yippee ki yay” down to the hairdressers and Dye Hard … with a vengeance.
But Bond? Was she thinking Sean Connery from the ’60s when dye-monds were forever; or Roger Moore who nonchalantly said live and let dye in the ’70s, before revealing his grey hairs for your dyes only in the ’80s? Timothy Dalton’s wispy side-part in 1987 scared the living dye-lights out of me. Although I must admit I kind of liked Pierce Brosnan’s black locks as Bond in GoldenDye and Tomorrow Never Dyes. I wonder if he coloured his hair for those films, or whether he just said I’ll dye another day? Then there’s Craig, Daniel Craig. Now he was a real rough-around-the-edges, brooding, but dashing Bond in Dyefall… Alas, this recollecting has reminded me I’ll never ever be the James Bond type, even if I were to colour over all the salt in my hair. Besides, I’m a very busy guy; as so accurately reflected in the title of this year’s 25th Bond film … No Time To Dye.

MASTER THE ART OF LIVING
A love for a cherry red mustang Words by Barrie Hill
LifeBeginsatHalcyon.com.au
t was 20 years ago that Glenda and ICoupe. I came across a 1966 Ford Mustang When we first saw the car, it was just a shell ready for a full restoration.
The car was imported from the USA, and we decided to rebuild it from the ground up. The colour? LeMans Red. The Mustang replaced our MGB (it was red too). It was exciting to see each stage of the restoration. Six months later, we brought the car home. It was love at first sight! You see, there’s a deep love for classic cars in our family. We like to joke that there is petrol in our blood. Both of our sons have classic cars, and we are passing on the love of classic cars to our grandchildren. Thinking back, my father and grandfather also loved cars. If only we still had some of their cars, which would be classics today. What I love best about classic cars is the nostalgia and appreciation for the craftsmanship, the unique style and the timeless experience that takes you back to the bygone era. If you have a V8 like ours, it’s that unmistakable rumble. Classic cars have a story to tell. It’s quite a stark contrast to what we see these days! Glenda and I always had a penchant for Fords, I guess because both of our fathers were Ford lovers too. We’ve been to several car shows with the Mustang, but mostly love and enjoy going for scenic drives to our favourite places in South East Queensland. Especially with our family and friends who also own classic cars. When it came time to sell the family home last year, Glenda and I knew we wanted to be part of a lifestyle community. We both love to socialise and wanted a lock-andgo lifestyle, but we had one problem. We needed to make sure we had a garage big enough for the Mustang and our family car. After inspecting numerous lifestyle communities from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast, we found our home at Halcyon Glades at Caboolture. In July last year, we moved into our new home. With a big double garage, we have plenty of room for all the ‘toys’.

HEALTH Keith and Aine Rice
How Pilates changed our life LifeBeginsatHalcyon.com.au
Words by Aine Rice WHILE MANY MAY THINK PILATES IS AN EASY FORM OF EXERCISE, MY HUSBAND KEITH AND I ARE PROVING IT’S THE GO-TO EXERCISE FOR STRENGTH AND OVERALL VITALITY
f you had asked my husband ItoKeith and I seven years ago go to a Pilates class, we would have laughed at you.
We retired 13 years ago, sold up and travelled the world for six years. It’s safe to say we were far too busy to exercise! It’s wasn’t until we moved into our home at Halcyon Waters at Hope Island on the Gold Coast in 2013 that we got dragged to a couple of group fitness classes by our neighbours. We’re so glad they did! First, it was Zumba, then we tried Aquarobics and then it was finding our way around the gym. But it was two years ago when we thought we’d try ‘that’ exercise called Pilates. Wouldn’t be any more than a little bit of stretching, right? Wrong! After the first class, we couldn’t believe the sweat and how sore we were the next day (the good kind). Since then, our fitness has improved, our flexibility is the best it’s ever been, and we’re much stronger as well. After every class, we’ve worked every little muscle in our body. But it’s not just the physical benefits Keith and I have seen; we’ve also experienced plenty of mental benefits since practicing regularly. Focusing on your breath is a form of meditation for both of us, and we’ve found ourselves with better clarity and focus across many other areas of our life. Our instructor is fantastic, and it’s also a great social catch-up. The whole group rarely misses a class. We’ve never been fitter in our lives, and we can thank Pilates for that. Who knew we’d be fitter than our kids!
How does Pilates work? Rather than a rapid-fire workout, Pilates is all about slow, controlled movement with a focus on the breath. By making use of internal resistance, Pilates is a whole body workout.
Benefits of Pilates •
Improved flexibility
• Increased muscle strength and tone (especially in the core) • Helps to maintain muscle mass and bone density • Kick starts your immune system • Promotes those feel-good hormones called endorphins WINTER 2020 | 25

HOMEOWNERS FROM HALCYON LAKESIDE ARE DOING THEIR PART AT THE NEIGHBOURING GOOD SAMARITAN CHRISTIAN COLLEGE
he group of homeowners designed, built T and painted a ‘buddy bench’, a place for children to go if they’re feeling sad or alone and want someone to play with.
Buddy benches are making their way across Australian schools, with a proven track record of providing a place where children will recognise when another child is upset. Halcyon homeowners were on hand to help unveil the Buddy Bench in early March, making the nightly news and local newspapers. Halcyon Lakeside Community Manager, Donna Osborne, said the Buddy Bench was created using the community’s work shed and art room facilities. “We’ve got very highly skilled homeowners at Lakeside and this was an amazing opportunity to come together as a community to help combat bullying,” Donna said. “Our homeowners have made a real difference at the school and it goes to show the generosity within our communities.” The brains behind the Buddy Bench, homeowner Tim Wogan, said it was an amazing opportunity to do something for their neighbouring school. “It’s a worthwhile thing to do for the kids, and the school,” Tim said. “There’s plenty of expertise in the Halcyon Lakeside community, so if we can help the school that’s terrific.” College principal Greg Myers said he was proud to implement the Buddy Bench initiative. “The buddy bench is an important part of making sure that our young people always have someone they can go to if they’re feeling down and not making friends easily,” Myers said. Year four student, Asha Oliver, helped unveil the Buddy Bench and said it would help classmates if they’re feeling lonely. “If you’re feeling lonely and you want to play with someone, I think it’s a great place to sit,” Asha said.

Method 1. Place the chicken in a large saucepan with the onions, carrots, celery, parsley/mixed herbs, bay leaf, peppercorns and enough water to cover. Bring slowly to the boil then reduce heat and simmer until the chicken is cooked (about an hour for a whole chicken, 20 minutes for chicken breasts). 2. Remove the chicken from the pan and leave to cool. Strip meat off the bones, tear up into large bite size pieces and set aside. 3. Strain the cooking liquid into a saucepan and boil until reduced to 600ml/1 pint
Ingredients
4. Add the cream, return to the boil then whisk in the roux a little at a time to form a thick sauce
a 1 whole chicken about 1.5kg in weight or 6 chicken breasts
5. Blanch the broccoli in boiling water until just tender, then drain and refresh under cold water.
a 2 onions peeled and chopped a 3-4 carrots peeled and chopped a 2 celery sticks chopped a a few sprigs parsley or tsp dried parsley/mixed herbs a 1 bay leaf a a tbsp peppercorns (black or mixed) slightly crushed a 300ml double cream a 100g roux (see below) a 2 medium heads of broccoli divided into florets a 25g butter a 75g strong cheese grated a 150g breadcrumbs LifeBeginsatHalcyon.com.au
6. Stir chicken, broccoli and strained veg into the sauce and season to taste. 7. Pour this mixture into an ovenproof dish. 8. Melt the butter and mix with the breadcrumbs and cheese. Spread over the chicken mix (I find the quantities make one large oven proof dish plus a 2 person portion in a pyrex freezer/overproof dish so I freeze a 2 person portion. If you had one deeper dish for the whole lot you wouldn’t need as much breadcrumb/cheese mix) 9. Bake in a preheated oven at 180 degrees C for 20mins or until brown and bubbling.
To make the Roux 1. Melt 50g butter in a small sauce pan, add 50g flour and stir until combined, take off the heat.

Words by Mike Glajnaric MIKE GLAJNARIC AND HIS WIFE HELEN SOLD THEIR ACREAGE IN TALLAI TO “RIGHTSIZE” TO HALCYON GREENS, WHERE THEIR HOME OVERLOOKS THE GOLF COURSE. MIKE IS A WINE LOVER AND SHARES HIS INSIGHTS WITH US
’ll tell you one thing I do. Ipurchase When I go to a winery, I only one bottle of wine that I like so that when I get home, I can verify my choice.
Many times, I have said to myself, “what did I see in that wine?”. Some seasons are better than others, which makes subtle changes to the wine from year to year. The most popular white grape variety is Sauvignon Blanc. It fits between Chardonnay and Riesling in terms of aromatic intensity and acidity. However, the thing with a Sauvignon Blanc is that it doesn’t age well. It is best drunk when young and vibrant, generally within two years of being bottled. The great thing about Sauvignon Blanc is how easy it is to pair with any dish. The effect is similar in how a bold and acidic vinaigrette will draw out the flavours in a summer salad, making everything seem crisp and fresh. It cooks well, better than a typical dry white and can handle a wide range of cooking methods such as grilling, charring, smoking, steaming, sautéing and raw dishes. There is little or no oak, making Sauvignon Blanc a wine that pairs well with a green salad, goat’s cheese, chicken, shellfish, pork or even veal. New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is famous throughout the world, and with good reason. It’s similar to classic Sauvignon Blancs, yet unique in its own right.
Mike’s Wine of the Season My favourite Sauvignon Blanc at the moment is Babydoll Marlborough. It has won the best Sauvignon Blanc at two international competitions. It rivals Cloudy Bay and Jackson Estate as one of the very best Sauvignon Blancs New Zealand has to offer. This trophy-winning Sauvignon Blanc is a Marlborough classic, fresh and expressive with bundles of varietal character. It’s fresh with passionfruit and grapefruit flavours. I have seen it priced from $15 to $23, so make sure you shop around!

The One Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed Out Of The Window And Disappeared By Jonas Jonasson Published by Hyperion Books RRP $19.99
“A great feel-good book, it is pure entertainment, both funny and charming.”
This book is best described as a black comedy. The main character is Allan Karlsson who after a long and eventful life finds himself in a nursing home. On his one hundredth birthday and faced with a huge party organised by the home which he does not want, Allan decides to escape. He climbs out of his window and begins a hilarious adventure. As the story unravels about Allan and his merry band of fellow travellers, the reader learns about his quirky former life. The joy of this book comes from discovering who Allan was involved with and as a result, influenced some of the most important historic events of the 21st century.
Against All Odds By Craig Challen and Richard Harris with Ellis Henican Published by VikingRRP $34.99
“Even though I knew the outcome I found this book absolutely riveting.”
In June/July 2018, the world held its breath and waited for news about the Wild Boar Soccer Team trapped deep in a complex cave system in Thailand. The young boys and their coach were finally rescued one-by-one due to the ingenuity of an international cave diving team which included two Australians Craig Challen and Richard Harris. Craig and Richard were chosen because of their world recognised expertise as cave divers and their medical knowledge. Amazingly, they remained calm and focussed under extreme pressure from the Thai politicians, the world media, their own mental and physical exhaustion, and at times, self-doubt.
The Last Painting Of Sara De Vos By Dominic Smith Published by Picador RRP $19.99
“Historical, contemporary art fiction at its best.”
When the current owner of the reputed 1631 last painting by Dutch artist Sara De Vos discovers it’s a forgery, he hires a private detective to find the perpetrators. Meanwhile, a struggling Australian graduate student in New York agrees to paint a forgery of the De Vos when half a century later she is faced with a conundrum. She is curating an exhibition of female Dutch painters and there is the possibility that both versions could arrive. This book is mesmerising, suspenseful and dramatic. The author ingeniously takes the reader through three alternating timelines and locations to tell the story of the painting and how it impacts on three lives.

Brian takes his love for trivia to the streets
THE LAKESIDE COMMUNITY WON’T LET ANYTHING STOP THEIR WEEKLY TRIVIA NIGHT, TAKING THE GAME TO THE STREETS!
Brian Glennon in the middle of the driveway.
rian Glennon, Halcyon B Lakeside homeowner and trivia host, said after the social distancing laws came into effect, it meant they had to say goodbye to their usual popular Wednesday trivia nights.
“We wanted to be safe but stay connected as a community, and so street trivia was born!” Brian said. “We all sit in our driveways with a chair, drinks and nibbles and play five rounds of trivia. “It’s been a lot of fun so far, and something we’re all enjoying in the community. “The best thing about playing trivia is it keeps your mind active, and it makes you think.
LifeBeginsatHalcyon.com.au
“I also love that if you’re not too good at a particular subject, there’s bound to be something you can score on,” Brian said. Going from regular trivia to street trivia hasn’t come without its challenges for Brian, who said he had to put extra thought into how he compiled the questions. “As we’re all playing from a distance and unable to talk, I made the answers multiple choice or true and false with all answering done via hand signals which are quite fun. “There are five rounds of categories such as general knowledge, history, geography, food and drink and entertainment,” Brian said. Street trivia is now gaining popularity, with other Halcyon neighbouring streets getting in on the action.
“By playing trivia, I hope we can all get some fresh air, have a laugh and stay connected as friends and neighbours.” Brian hosted trivia nights at the local bowls club in Victoria before moving to Halcyon Lakeside in May 2019. “It was a big move, and we looked at just about every lifestyle community before settling on Halcyon Lakeside,” Brian said. “It’s been fantastic, and we love the lifestyle that Halcyon offers and exploring South East Queensland. “We’ve made great friends and being part of a community really comes into its own during times like this.”

HALCYON REFERRAL PROGRAM
Giving back to those in need BELLA'S SANCTUARY, AUSTRALIA’S FIRST PURPOSE-BUILT BRIDGING ACCOMMODATION FACILITY FOR SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
hen Halcyon homeowner W *Julie saw the young woman at Roma St Railway Station that day, she could tell she was struggling.
The woman was loaded up with cheap red and white bags you find in the discount store and she was pushing a stroller with a baby and carting a toddler up to the platform. “I didn’t know it at the time but she was carrying all of her possessions in those bags, and there were a few railway workers who were helping her get everything onto the train,” Julie said. “She got on the same carriage as me and I could hear her tell a few passengers that she was on her way to a women’s refuge in Nambour as her husband was violent and was a drug addict.” Julie said it broke her heart to see this young woman have to go through something like this. “For a woman to have to be in a situation in terror and there’s two LifeBeginsatHalcyon.com.au
little kids and there’s drugs in the house,” she said. “We’re just so lucky in our circumstances and at the time I wished I had a purse full of money to give to her to help her make a new start but of course we all carry cards around these days.” Julie said she looked up the refuge in Nambour and tried to find the woman, but as these facilities have to be secret she couldn’t find her. “That woman has stuck with me and as I’ve had two girlfriends and a male relative who was being abused by his wife, go through tough domestic violence situations, I really wanted to help however I could.” So when Julie and her husband referred a friend to Halcyon, they used their Friends of Halcyon referral cheque to donate to Bella’s Sanctuary – a home Halcyon and Mirvac built on the Gold Coast to house women fleeing domestic violence situations. “There’s really not enough of these type of places around to support women going through
this so when we got the referral money, it was the first charity we thought of to support,” Julie said. She said her friend had visited their home and was incredibly impressed and as soon as a home was available, they bought it and had moved in recently. *Our homeowner would prefer to remain anonymous.
