aldex shows its hand: in Brazil, strength has been consolidated with a large new factory and promising cooperation has begun with Brazil’s largest brake manufacturer. In Europe, the Haldex name stands more than ever for innovation that creates added value, which is well-received by the market. We are proud that our trailer modules with the patented Safe Parking function won the innovation award at both IAA 2010 and Solutrans 2011. Cooling specialist Lamberet also gained attention thanks to its own innovations. This issue of Haldex Magazine portrays how the innovative spirits of Haldex and Lamberet complement each other. Our new ModulT trailer disc brake and the Haldex TPMS tire pressure monitoring system show not only an innovative personality, but a service-friendly one, too. Two more articles, devoted entirely to the needs of service mechanics, illustrate in simple steps how ModulT brake pads can be changed in a jiffy and how easily the Haldex TPMS can be retrofitted.

My name is Ulf Ahlén. I was CEO of the Haldex Traction Division which is today part of BorgWarner Inc. for more than a decade and have now taken this position at Haldex AB. I am proud of this assignment, which means continual development of the company with even deeper anchoring in the market. What I intend is to further strengthen quality and increase the emphasis on reliable delivery. In the immediate and long-term future, we are putting everything into continuous innovation such that the Haldex name, more than ever, represents attractive products with high added-value for the customer. I hope you enjoy reading the kaleidoscope of articles in this issue of Haldex Magazine.

Ulf Ahlén is new CEO Ulf Ahlén is the new CEO of Haldex AB, effective December 2011. The 63-year-old can look back on a long career in the Swedish automotive industry: he held various positions at the Volvo group, most recently as production manager at a car factory, before leaving in 1998 to become CEO of the Haldex Traction Division in Landskrona.

ABS systems

Haldex and Master Haldex cooperates with Master, the Brazilian market leader in brakes, on the manufacture, sales and technical support of ABS systems in Brazil. Starting in 2013, all new homologations must be equipped with ABS, and in 2014, all new vehicles. Master, which is based in the south of Brazil, manufactures both drum and disc brakes and employs 1,300 people.

Long truck-trailer combinations are slowly but surely gaining acceptance in Europe. In as early as the 1990s, Sweden and Finland launched the 25.25-metre, 60-tonne juggernauts. But for a long time, the rest of Europe has been reluctant to accept them. Until recently. Now long trucks can also be registered in the Netherlands and in Belgium. Norway permits the so-called EuroCombis on certain routes and Denmark has just extended similar trials until 2016. In March 2012, a broad-based trial of 25.25-metre, maximum 44-tonne combinations began

in Germany. Field trials of extralong, approximately 15-metre semi-trailers are also taking place. Trials of these combinations, whose total length is approximately 18 metres, are occurring in Italy, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic and Poland, among other countries.

It keeps getting better The upward trend in heavy class truck registrations is continuing in all important markets

around the world. Analysts from the company IHS Automotive are forecasting growth of

Fifty percent larger in area, and 2,500 additional storage places: these are the key data for the recently expanded Haldex central warehouse in Weyersheim, near Strasbourg. A new semiautomated express belt has been installed for high-speed dispatch, and twice as much space is devoted to pre-assembly and kit configuration. The Haldex central warehouse manages 18 product lines that encompass approximately 10,000 parts in total. It offers 24-hour service and dispatches an average of 150 pallets and 350 packages to destinations all over the world.

almost 20 to 40 percent over the next three years for Europe and for North and South America.

Awards

In emergent countries, particularly high growth of 37 to 40 percent is expected in India and Russia. In China, market researchers expect further growth compared to the year 2011 but only for 2012; they predict a certain saturation after that and a fall in number of items. Only 780,000 units are estimated for 2014 compared to more than one million new registrations in 2010. Nevertheless, this still makes China the undisputed largest heavy truck market in the world.

Safe Parking wins award The coveted 'Technical Innovation Award' of the Solutrans 2011 commercial vehicle exhibition in Lyon went to the Trailer Emergency Module (TEM) from Haldex. This is the second time the ‘Safe Parking’ function has convinced an important jury: At IAA 2010, Haldex won the 'Trailer Innovation Award 2011' with the Trailer Control Module+ Safe Parking. Both systems feature the Safe Parking function, which significantly reduces the risk of an accident during day-to-day coupling and uncoupling of trailers.

Art and commerce The weeks of work painting areas as large as a truck and trailer do not come cost-free. The high standard to which the species-protection trailers have been finished means they are first-class, eye-catching image bearers, and will, therefore, always be attractive to trailer and tractor unit suppliers. ‘With the right sponsors and with other activities such as hiring out for events or filming’, in Rüdiger Fieber’s experience, ‘it is quite possible the buyers will recoup their investment'.

elaborate piece of airbrush work ever done in Europe’, says Rüdiger Fieber. Typical of his style is division of the design into two entirely different parts along with a surreal note reminiscent of Salvador Dali: on the left side of the tiger truck, the image is predominantly yellow and the animal appears in a slightly alienated here-and-now. The tiger skeleton, however, is an unmistakable reference to the precarious situation of the species. A kind of window on time in the background provides a symbol of disappearance, but at the same time, references the right side of the semi-trailer. There, the artists express anticipated extinction of the species in a unique manner: cosmic and extraterrestrial symbols indicate the tiger has left the earthly plane.

Predominant use of red indicates extreme danger for the white shark. The other side of the shark trailer shows reconciliation between humans and nature.

Extraterrestrial motifs symbolise disappearance of the tiger.

Original imagery about alienation, yet a clear message and perfect craftwork: these are typical of the unique Moving Art pieces. It takes eight weeks before each truck and trailer, from top to bottom, embodies the vision of the Fieber team and bears the signature of the Amberg airbrush team. The artists give their creativity free rein. The precarious situation of the great white shark, for instance, is illustrated by a glowing red sea full of oil barrels with a drilling platform exploding overhead. The typical skeleton motif appears again, above which, there is a kind of shark crucifixion scene. ‘We want to shake people up and provoke them’, says Rüdiger Fieber about the thinking behind the radical images. The other side of the shark trailer, however, is more forgiving: humans and animals coexist peacefully. Urban Miami motifs and the sea fuse into a surrealistic, common biosphere. A life belt, thrown over the animal’s tail fin, indicates optimism. As carriers of positive imagery, the unique Moving Art vehicles convey yet another message at a different level. 'Commercial vehicles show themselves in quite a different light in this mission’, explains Rüdiger Fieber, who thinks the campaign also helps improve the image of the commercial vehicle sector. It is not by chance he is drawn to commercial vehicles: as a design student, the airbrush virtuoso drove trucks himself, and even now he has close connections to the sector. Four mobile artworks have already been finished: the shark, the bald eagle, the polar bear and the tiger. About a dozen more, including the blue whale, mountain gorilla, panda, orang-utan and snow leopard, are expected to follow in stages.

The name Lamberet has always had a special ring to it. Now more than ever, it stands for a remarkable range of products that utilises a sophisticated modular concept.

C

arefully conceived production, the Lamberet way: ‘We consider industrialisation of the processes a must’, says Managing Director Erick Méjean as he describes the company’s approach which, despite this, never loses sight of the specific characteristics of each of its products. Intelligent modular concepts and distinctive customer-oriented construction are the trump cards that give Lamberet its winning edge. Its products range from bonsai boxes to proper ice giants. No one goes to extremes like Lamberet. ‘From 1 to 100 m³’ is the catchy slogan Lamberet uses to describe, in a nutshell, its broad range of refrigerated vehicles. Four European factories and two Asian branches (manufacturing under licence) dispatch refrigerated bodies to customers. The workforce, which numbers around 550 employees, is especially proud that ‘the profit before tax for 2011 was approximately six percent of turnover’, in the words of Erick Méjean who, together with the dedicated Lamberet workforce, managed to turn the company around in a short amount of time.

The self-contained body was introduced by Lamberet as early as 1990.

which is principally intended for distribution work. This design is especially suited to the preferences of French customers. ‘Super Beef' is Lamberet’s designation for its third variant, which is specially tailored for the transport of hanging meat. Safe Parking from Haldex is standard at Lamberet.

A great deal has changed at Lamberet since 2008, a year of crisis and insolvency. Its integration into the owner-managed, debt-free Caravelle Group (amongst others, Benalu, Marrel and Edbro – with a turnover of about one billion euros) strengthened the company’s position enormously and cleared the way for a wide variety of synergistic effects. Leaner structures were accompanied by fresh impetus. Making ‘Quality Before Quantity’ its motto, the company has refocused on its former strengths. The range of trailers from Lamberet is based on two fundamental principles. A modular chassis constitutes the foundation for three different types of trailers. The ‘Greenliner’ trailer family is designed primarily for long-distance transport, and is a hit export of the company. Lamberet describes the Greenliner as ‘the lightest vehicle in its class’, with a carrying capacity that is one tonne above the normal market average. About 60 percent of Lamberet trailers are exported to countries across Europe.‘Heavy Duty’ is the name of its more robust counterpart,

Intelligent modularity and distinctive customer-oriented construction are indeed the trump cards that give Lamberet its winning edge. A multitude of chassis variants can be conjured up from the three base modules (front, axle module and rear end). Powder coating makes it possible for

employee benefits from company returns as a whole in the form of a special bonus. Flourishing at Lamberet with undiminished vigour is the special innovative flair that has always characterised the company and that makes it an ideal partner for Haldex. Safety has gained increased importance at Lamberet. The patented Safe Parking function, for example, is standard equipment on Lamberet trailers. ‘Installable without additional effort and good value for the money’, is how Head of Marketing Quentin Wiedemann describes the advantages of the Haldex system which, if air hoses are incorrectly connected, automatically activates the parking brake if it is not already engaged. The Soft Docking ramp approach assistant is optional and offered by Lamberet in a specially adapted construction where even cabling is perfectly integrated into the chassis. In general, Lamberet equips the majority of trailers it produces with Award winner: Lamberet dug deep into its bag of tricks when it conceived the Super Beef.

the company to offer a six-year guarantee against rust- through on these components. Bolted joints offer high stability and allow for repairs with ease. Lamberet does not use foam-injected insulation; it instead constructs panels utilising special foam blocks. The composition of the blocks is perhaps the company’s most closely guarded secret. The blocks have a very low density, but insulate particularly well. In addition, the Lamberet panel construction does not require any metal cladding, which prevents corrosion problems. A solid coating based on fibreglass and resin, and impermeable to both vapour and liquid, is responsible for the exceptional stability of the construction as a whole. Extensive involvement of employees is also of great importance at Lamberet. The decision-making process between production and management, for example, is short. It is no coincidence that one and the same person, Gwenaël Tuët, is responsible not only for research and development but also after-sales service including warranty support. Consequently, market feedback goes directly to the right place without any detours. In addition, each and every

EB+ from Haldex. Short decision-making processes, lean structures and a pronounced emphasis on modular products: this is the soil in which innovation thrives. It is also the reason why Haldex and Lamberet business cultures fit together so well. Both Lamberet and Haldex have been commended on many occasions for innovation. For instance, both Haldex, for its Safe Parking function, and Lamberet were amongst the winners of the award for technical innovation at Solutrans 2011. Lamberet received the innovation award for its new Super Beef trailer. A particularly robust and stable variant, this semi-trailer is the latest creation of Lamberet developers. In this design, Lamberet, in their own unique way, focused on safety with thoroughness that is typical of the company. Transporters that carry meat have always had a high risk of tipping because of their high centre of gravity. In the SR2 Super Beef, this tendency is counteracted by a wider chassis and enhanced air suspension. Lamberet has, furthermore, lowered the centre of gravity. To further suppress rocking, Lamberet employs air suspension bellows with an XL diameter of 360 millimetres on the SR2 Super Beef. For good measure, the bellow rows on each side are equipped with a virtually autonomous air circuit – implemented with Haldex technology.

What’s more, the new Super Beef from Lamberet also offers body construction advantages that are attracting the attention of experts. Enormous force on the side walls of the body is transferred uniformly to the middle of the vehicle chassis which interlocks with the body aided by special stabilisers. This relieves stress on the outer areas of the floor. The result is significantly less risk of tipping: ‘15 percent higher rollover stability’ claims Lamberet for the Super Beef. It is true that hanging meat trailers constitute a small portion of Lamberet products. However, ways have been found to apply Super Beef’s special features to other product lines within the company. For example, refrigerated bodies with double-deck loading, including Lamberet’s ‘Duplex’ bodies, are also at high risk of tipping. Consequently, it’s only a matter of time before they, too, ply their routes on a super- stable chassis.

The Haldex TPMS monitors both the pressure and the temperature of each individual trailer tire and is fully integrated in the Haldex EBS for semi-trailers. Hence, data from the tire pressure monitoring system can be transmitted by CAN-Bus to the display in the driver’s cab without an extra antenna. The sensor transmits its signals directly and without an external antenna to the Remote Communication Unit (RCU), which is compatible with the CAN-Bus. The wheel sensor is robust (service life approximately eight years depending on frequency of use as well as temperature) and is flexibly bound to the wheel rim. In comparison with a traditionally rigid connection, the risk of damage to a flexible connection, when, for example, fitting a tire, is significantly less. If a wheel is replaced, the Haldex TPMS recognises the changed circumstances and reconfigures the system accordingly.

Axles Rubrik

Off to new shores It's an ambitious project and an unusual approach: VALX intends to establish itself as a big player in the European market for axles with axle housings produced in China.

14

Haldex Magazine

Spring/ Summer 2012

Axles

VALX always uses Haldex brake adjusters with its drum brakes.

H

e who rides the tiger cannot dismount. ‘We have only one shot, so to speak’, says VALX director Mark Engelen, describing the company’s bold venture. The Dutch company, based in Valkenswaard, have devised a daring plan: they want to be one of the biggest axle makers in Europe. They intend to launch a brand new product family with components partly from China and partly from Europe. But VALX is not doing this straight out of the blue. For decades, the Dutch parent company MCB (Metaalcompagnie Brabant) has imported axles from a large German manufacturer and, therefore, knows the subject well. It has cooperated closely for years with Haldex, which is represented in Benelux by General Manager Peter Van der Burght. The start of the VALX initiative, introduced at IAA 2010, was a straightforward but thoughtfully selected nine-ton axle family. They are available with a choice of drum or disc brakes in sizes 19.5 and 22.5 inches with common offsets of 0 and 120. VALX is aiming for volume and not a niche market: ‘With that, we can serve 80 to 85 percent of the market’, says Mark Engelen. What VALX would like to offer the customer is ‘a reliable product at a competitive price, with very attractive life-cycle costs’, Mark Engelen continues. Working with the British expert Les Price, a basic concept was developed based on a rather conventional seamless, non-welded extremely strong axle beam’ and a very innovative axle mount. The cross-member is clamped round the axle and held in place by a keyway on the axle’s un-

derside. This provides extra safety and ensures high flexibility in mounting. In addition, notches on the bottom of the clamp determine the bellows offset, a simple and effective solution. VALX’s search for an axle housing production site in China was successful. None other than Fuwa, the world’s biggest axle manufacturer (capacity for 1.2 million units per year), makes the VALX axle housings in Taishan, in south-western China, on its own specially designed production line.

Mark Engelen Managing Director

‘Reliable product, attractive lifecycle costs’. Keep it simple Keeping things simple is important to VALX, and this shows in the details. To correctly preload a bearing, for example, a single nut is tightened until slippage occurs. And for the axle suspension, only one type of shock damper, steering arm and support is necessary. Yet a wide range of ride heights from 210 to 420 millimetres and bellows offsets from 0 to 90 millimetres are possible.

Managing director Mark Engelen outlines the requirements: ‘Manufacturing is strictly to specifications from the Netherlands and is subject to strict independent quality control’. The axle housings are transported from China to Rotterdam in containers, for completion in Venlo (the Netherlands) with European components. Haldex supplies the automatic brake adjusters for the drum brakes, which are designed in Europe but also produced in China. ‘The automatic brake adjuster from Haldex and our drum brake match perfectly, right up to location of the grease nipple’, says Technical Manager Hans van Maanen, in praise of the perfect teamwork between Haldex and VALX. Hans Van Maanen continues: ‘The predictably consistent high quality of the automatic brake adjuster from Haldex is important to us’. The drum brake is not dead in Europe. ‘It is often the first choice for hire companies or when the tractor and trailer are not perfectly matched’, says After-sales Manager Hugo de Pijper. He estimates that in VALX sales, drum and disc brakes ‘will remain balanced in the long run’. VALX has already won large contracts in Spain and Turkey. Now its focus is increasingly on Benelux and Germany. ‘Ten to 15 percent European market share within three years’, says Mark Engelen, ‘is the first objective’. There is no shortage of optimism in the Valkenswaard headquarters. The VALX team is already busy working on increasing its product range with special axles for steering and mega-trailers, which should further increase turnover.

The legendary Scania V8: once 350 HP, today 730 HP.

Scania V8 of 1969 with its enormous power stood almost alone in the world for a good decade, a power boom began in the 1980s and has continued unabated to the this day. Only very recently Volvo set the bar at 750 HP. So the only thing that can slow the 40-tonner down on any normal motorway gradient is the speed limit. It is hardly conceivable, though, that development will stagnate as a result. If development continues as linearly as it has, the magic 1000 HP limit will be reached in 2030.

Haldex develops and provides reliable and innovative solutions with focus on brake and air suspension products to the global commercial vehicle industry. Listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange, Haldex has annual sales of approximately 4 billion SEK and employs about 2,350 people.

In addition, pole position in the power stakes means prestige because pole position brings kudos to the manufacturer, the buyer and the driver as well. When a truck manufacturer lets a new alpha animal off its leash, his intention is to wave a flag and demonstrate particular expertise, of course. The particularly potent flagships of the past five years have almost always satisfied not only the required Euro-5 standard but also the particularly strict EEV standard.

igh-performance trucks are fascinating, even if their numbers are modest. As trendsetters, however, they play an important role. So far, motorisation of trucks has risen continually, and there is no end in sight. But what is gained from ever-increasing power and torque? The answer is very simple: increased transport performance and improved driveability. And with higher torque comes great engine efficiency at low speeds, which means lower fuel consumption and less wear.
