Julie (and Beaufort Lifestyle Team), I received a copy of the recent edition of

Beaufort Lifestyle at my office. It is always a bit embarrassing to find one’s picture on a cover of a magazine, but I’m sure I’ll have no problem getting ribbed by my friends. Actually, in truth, I wanted to extend a huge “Thank You” to you and the team for the article. I enjoyed reading what Mary Ellen and Todd had put together.

And the pictures were excellent too. It was great to meet and work with Todd while in Boston. I just wish there had been more time. He is a great guy and his pictures turned out outstanding! And Mary Ellen was a pleasure to meet and talk to. Thank you very much for such a great article. What’s Next? Look out 2011...

As the end of the year draws near, business owners are taking a look at what they have done in 2010, and their plans for 2011. As a magazine publisher, I am certainly no exception to this rule!

In recent weeks, our staff has come together with some great ideas for the future of Beaufort Lifestyle. We had our annual “planning session” recently, and our advertisers and readers are definitely going to benefit from the outcome of this meeting.

Now that we have completed a full year, we are more prepared to capture the “seasons” and “happenings” of Beaufort. We have set a specific theme for each of our publications in 2011 and we are very excited about this. We feel this will give us an “edge,” so to speak, a way to bring you more information, along with more features on the people and places of Beaufort, Port Royal and the Sea Islands.

We have given this serious thought.

We have come up with unique ways to make this publication better and stronger than ever. So, as we begin 2011, you will see many changes and additions along the way.

We hope that each of you will be a participant in what we have in store!

Please remember, this magazine is for you, the people of Beaufort. We, as always, welcome any story ideas you may have, along with sharing any events and happenings you have coming in the new year.

Our February/March issue will serve as our Film Festival issue. We will highlight all the exciting things in store for this year’s Beaufort International Film Festival, an event that continues to grow each year.

This issue will also serve as our annual Health and Wellness issue. This section will feature many of our local health providers, along with wellness tips and advice.

So, please enjoy this issue….and anticipate what “new” things are coming your way!

Cindy Reid

Cindy Reid ascribes to the cocktail napkin motto “I’m not from the South but I got here as quick as I could.” Born and raised on the sleepy Hudson River towns of rural New York, she always knew she was meant to feel sand and not gravel under her feet.

She graduated from Mills College in Oakland,CA and spent the next twenty years raising a daughter and working in the retail book business before finally landing in St. Helena, SC. Her work has appeared in About Town, skirt!, Salon.com and she is a regular contributor to Coastal Mariner.”

Having grown up on the Main Line of Philadelphia and the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Mary Ellen now lives on Saint Helena Island with her Great Dane, Duke.

She has a son and a daughter who live in Colorado and New York City. With a degree in business, she has owned several companies including Calypso Car Wash and Oil Change in Naples, Florida and a firm which specialized in French wall upholstery in Philadelphia. She spent several years on a barge cruising the canals of Europe. Her passions include traveling, photography, entertaining and being Mary Ellen Thompson anywhere on the water.

John Wollwerth

John Wollwerth is a photographer raised in New York, now living in Beaufort. He specializes in wedding, advertising and architectural photography. John is a member of the American Society of Media Photographers. His work has appeared in such magazines as Coastal Living, South Carolina Homes and Gardens and Period Homes, to name a few. He comes highly recommended by numerous wedding planners, and he travels regularly throughout the region.

Gina Wright

Born and raised in the mountains of Virginia, Gina relocated to Beaufort after graduating from Virginia Tech in the ‘90’s. “Once the pluff mud gets between your toes, you know you are home” is her slogan regarding life in Beaufort. With degrees in Clothing and Textiles and Interior Design, she enjoys a variety of activities that include traveling, sports, boating, and beaching. Gina is married to Chip Haubenstein; they have a daughter and granddaughter along with three cats and one dog. A self-proclaimed gypsy, Gina loves anything that sparkles.

Paul Nurnberg

Paul Nurnberg is an award-winning photographer, who has lived in Beaufort, SC since 1996. He recently relocated his studio to Port Royal, SC from Savannah. Focusing on a variety of commercial advertising work including people, lifestyle, products and architecture, Paul also photographs select weddings. His work appears regularly in national magazines and regional advertising.

He is the past national secretary of the Advertising Photographers of America and a four-year board member of the ASMP, SC chapter and remains an active member in both. Paul also offers classes in photography through Artworks and directly from his studio.

Susan Deloach

Susan Deloach was born Susan Bessinger in Beaufort, where she still resides with her husband Larry and sons Hudson and Tucker. Susan has a gift for capturing the personality and unique essence of her subject whether on location or in the studio.

Her portraits are as diverse as the personalities of the people she photographs - some are edgy, some joyful, but all have one thing in common: the sensitive, skilled and thoughtful approach of the artist behind the camera.

Say “Yes” More Than You Say “No”

A

s we approach the end of 2010, many of us will begin to reflect on what we accomplished in 2010. We will also begin thinking about what we want to accomplish in 2011.

It’s hard to believe the magazine is a little over one year old now. We celebrated our first birthday in grand fashion. Hopefully you were there. Those of you who weren’t, please be sure to make plans to be at our two-year party in October of 2011. And, though that is still many months from now, it is just one of many great things we have planned for the new year.

We’ve set our goals pretty high for 2011, and that means we will be trying a lot of new things. This area certainly deserves perspectives as told by the many talented and creative people that call Beaufort home.

We have been fortunate to meet many great people. Their amazing talents vary, but the one thing they all have in common is their warm welcoming hearts.

I believe this to be a very important key to success, not only in business, but also in the success of a community.

There’s a new art out there that I believe is going to enhance this great area. It’s called social art, and though I cannot eloquently give it the definition it deserves, I can tell you it is about sharing creative ideas. But, there must also be an audience participating.

Chase Jarvis is quoted in saying, “Right now is the most exciting time to be a photographer in the history of the world.

For the first time in the history of the world, content creators are also distributors, and can do so on a large scale.”

I’ve looked at this beyond being a photographer and the business of photography. I believe it can be applied to any business or community. I truly believe the cliche phrase “Image is Everything.” I also believe vision and creativity is everything, however it must be cultivated. That will mean taking the time to participate.

Saying “yes” more than you say “no” will get the participation started. Saying yes does mean taking action. Also remember yes doesn’t necessarily mean success, but “no” is a sure way to never know what could have been.

Newsweek actually had a cover story article on how there is a creativity crisis in America. They say our creativity has been plummeting since 1990. The author of the article, Simone Hine, said that the current economic crisis is in part due to the lack of creativity.

So lets get creative. Say yes. Network with fellow business owners and your neighbors. Everybody has something to offer somebody. It all starts with “yes” and participation.

In short, I could have summed up this entire article by saying that I have some great ideas for the magazine in 2011. Hopefully your answer will be “yes” when we start these projects.

I will be saying yes to a lot more in 2011. Will you?

Dirt roads, Spanish moss, live oaks canopy, ….R. Michael Givens’ new movie Angel Camouflaged appears to be archetypal Southern tale …until a rock ‘n roll chick sporting tattoos and dreadlocks roars into town with a trunk full of attitude in a vintage Mustang convertible. Starring Dilana Robichaux as a down and out rock singer who inherits a down and out bar, the movie tells the story of how life can provide salvation in the most unexpected places.

Multitalented R. Michael Givens, South Carolina native and Beaufort resident, is the writer, director and cinematographer of the full length independent feature film. He shot the movie in the California desert and the Folly Beach area, outside of Charleston. Givens says, “The script was originally set at Key Largo, but with only a couple of slight changes we were able to change the locale to South

When asked what he liked about filming in South Carolina Givens emphatically answered, “Everything. Everything.”

Angel Camouflaged is already winning impressive awards on the film festival circuit. At the Action on Film International Film Festival the movie came home with four prestigious awards: Best Cinematography for Michael Givens, Best Actress for Dilana, Best Supporting Actor for James Brolin and Best Artwork and Poster Design for Michael Givens. Angel Camouflaged is also an “Official Selection Cannes Independent Film Festival 2010” selection, and is scheduled for national distribution in March 2011. The film will be entered in the Beaufort Film Festival. “Everybody please come and see Angel Camouflaged - we’ll have fun!” says Givens.

The Cast of Kokonuts Until now South African native Dilana has been best known as a runner up on the CBS show “Rock Star Supernova”, but after garnering a “Best Actress “award, she has added acting to her impressive resume as a singer and musician. Playing Scottie, a singer who has reached a dead end in her life and career who takes the lifeline offered to her in the form of an inheritance, was a challenge more than met by the versatile performer. Says Givens, “I had great confidence in her performance. She was on the set everyday and you could see her progress and she becomes a great actress through the course of the film.”

Bait shop owner and Kokonuts neighbor Thaddeus “Salt” Salterman is played by veteran actor James Brolin. Givens said, “Jim was on the set all the time, even days when he wasn’t working. I asked why he was there when he didn’t need to be and he said, ‘just in case you need me’ but I really think it’s because he loves filmmaking. He and I were part of a panel discussion and when he was asked why he chose to do the film, he said ‘I read the script. I was a page and a half into it when I knew I had to play this character’. As the scriptwriter, that was a deeply gratifying moment.”

Carlos Bernard (best known for playing Tony Almeida in the TV series 24), provides the tension as the bar owner next door who wants to take Kokonuts over, accompanied by his equally duplicitous girlfriend played by Tessie Santiago.

-Angel Camouflaged Another South African native, actor Warrick Grier (from “Scorpion King: Rise of a Warrior”) plays Morgan, Scottie’s brother and co-owner of the bar.

And in a truly inspired bit of casting, Terry Serpico, who plays the completely upright Lt. Colonel Frank Sherwood in Lifetime’s Army Wives, is Angel Camouflaged genuinely evil character, replete with scary facial tattoos and a menacing Mohawk do.

A Tale of Rock ‘n Roll Redemption Angel Camouflaged more than delivers on its billing as a ‘rock ‘n roll drama’, with an outstanding musical cast and soundtrack. Dilana wrote and performed nine songs, and hip hop legend Kurtis Blow contributes two songs, including a cover of the Lynard Skynard classic “Gimme Three Steps”.

“I’m a naturalist, period”, claims Marvin Bouknight. He means it too. Whether stopping to move a live copperhead snake out of the road or picking up road kill, Marvin is a naturalist. Picking up road kill? You got it; the skeleton will be used for educational purposes. Presentations, guided tours, and campfire cooking classes are a few of his teaching activities. With a degree in Wildlife, Fisheries, and Aquaculture from Clemson University, Marvin’s primary job as a naturalist is to study and interpret wildlife. He takes pride in his profession , “I take being a naturalist seriously”. His goal is to take the scientific stuff and make it understandable and fun. This is obvious when you meet Marvin. His passion and conviction about wildlife is quite contagious.

Walking excursions point out bird identification,(bird watching is the number two hobby in the United States) medicinal and edible plant identification, as well as tracking patterns of animals. Marvin can identify tracks left by a specific creature and at times, whether the animal is on the hunt or headed home. Marvin’s wit, knowledge and sense of humor are a powerful combination. Asked

if he ever doesn’t know an animal while out on a walk, he will admit that he doesn’t know it all. “It is all about learning.” If he doesn’t know the animal or plant, he will research it and know the answer for the next time out. Maybe this is why his bedside book is a field guide.

Bouknight knew early on in life he wanted to be a naturalist. He joyfully recounts a tale of what he experienced around the age of four. While his mother was busy planting flower bulbs in the yard, a bee found its way to Marvin’s sights. The bee hovered close to his face for a few moments. was thrilled - thrilled that he saw the bee’s eyes. “I saw his eyes!” he runs to tell his mother. Maybe that bee was sending a message to a future Dr. Doolittle.

As a child growing up in West Columbia, SC , Marvin was always outside. After school, he would disappear into the woods until his mother would call him in for supper, or it was dark.

While out in the woods, he would hear owls calling. Thus began his desire to learn the owl language. Upon his return home, Marvin would practice duplicating the owl sounds he heard in the woods. After mastering the Eastern Screech Owl’s call, Marvin showed his new found skill off to his older brother.

Sure enough, after Marvin performed the owl call, a screech owl appeared. His brother was certainly impressed and no longer considered Marvin a youngster traipsing around the woods, but a knowledgeable young man.

Bouknight’s formula for protecting wildlife is education + appreciation = preservation. This philosophy spills over into his view of development. He would like to make developers aware of the wildlife we have and make them think before developing.

Hopefully, if they decide to develop, they do it responsibly. An unassuming marsh may be teeming with life forms; frogs, owls, spiders, birds, snakes, as well as native vegetation. Each one is an integral part of a delicate ecological system. Government rules and regulations do affect wildlife. In the 1970’s there were only 13 pairs of bald eagles in the South Carolina. Today there are over 250 pairs of bald eagles throughout the state. When seeing a bald eagle Marvin explains, ”If you don’t get excited then you need to check your pulse.” Bald eagles migrate to South Carolina September through April.

Marvin’s wife, Gabrielle, is either his partner in crime or guilty by association. One of their first dates was a traipse through the woods. He knew if she could be excited about owl calling, she was the one for him. Gabrielle is guilty of indulging his insatiable appetite for learning, she gave him a book on mushrooms called Mushrooms Demystified.. Now THAT is love.

Recently they returned from a North Carolina road trip to see elk. Not just see elk, but hear them bugle, witness the steam billow from their nostrils and watch them meander over the hills to a stream. Don’t think the overnight stay was in a comfy hotel for this naturalist, it was spent in a tent; as close to the elk as possible. One of the next road trips on the Bouknight’s agenda is planned to Elkmont, Tennessee to see fireflies that flash simultaneously.

When Gabrielle is asked if she is ever nervous for her husband’s safety around wildlife she responds, “It’s another day at the office.” Occasionally, on her drive home from work, she will see Marvin’s vehicle on the roadside. She knows he is out taking photographs of an elusive animal, plant or sunset.

Gabrielle can even be credited for one of the images featured in his book. Roseate spoonbills are a rarity in our area and she was aware of that fact. Upon seeing the birds on her way home from Savannah, GA, she urgently phoned Marvin. Although he was at work, Marvin made the trek to capture the shot.

“Wildlife is amazing.” simply stated Marvin. His new book South Carolina’s Lowcountry… Naturally is a testament to his words. The book is not only beautiful it is also informative.

He wanted a book that was “not a field guide, and not a coffee table book” yet a book that the readers could “hear me talk through the pages.” The photographs and facts captured in the book certainly convey Marvin’s conviction, passion and love of wildlife. After meeting Marvin and seeing his work if you aren’t equally excited then maybe you should check your pulse!

PASSING IT FORWARD “I believe art should stir your soul and ignite your imagination.”

T

o say Hank D. Herring is versatile, is an understatement. His extensive array of talents include artist, carpenter, furniture maker, welder, business man, family man, and former Deacon of his church.

He is insightful, spiritual, kind, thoughtful, and caring; on top of that, it is incredibly fun to be with him!

Born in Rose Hill, NC and raised in Elizabeth, NJ, Hank first came to Beaufort in 1978 when he was in the Marine Corps on Parris Island. In and out of Beaufort on tours of duty to North Carolina, Okinawa, Japan, Aberdeen, MD, and Massachusetts, Hank retired in Beaufort.

As a child, he returned to North Carolina in the summers to work on his grandfather’s farm, where they grew tobacco, hay, soy bean, corn, and raised hogs. During the rest of the year, he lived in New Jersey, “I got the work ethic of the South and went to some great schools in New Jersey. When I got to New Jersey I was the only child in my fourth grade class who knew how to use power tools. People wore leather shoes in those days.

Since I knew how to use tools, I built shoeshine boxes for my group of friends. We’d walk up Elizabeth Avenue and stop in front of the bars and taverns and shine shoes.”

Hank’s entrepreneurial sense didn’t stop there. “When I was in the eighth grade, my father owned a car wash.

Because of his full time day job, Dad didn’t have time to run it, so he gave me the keys.

I got my friends to work for me; I paid them at the end of the day and we went our own way. At night, I worked at

Papetti’s egg plant.” (Writer’s note: this is not an aubergine – I never heard eggplant divided into two words before this interview.) “They put eggs into cans – whole eggs, yolks, whites, went into separate cans and were sold to bakeries and other food service markets. At first, my job was to push the eggshells into the dumpster. Then I got the cans ready for the eggs and cleaned the machines. I learned the system and was promoted to night foreman of the plant where I continued to work for two more years.”

Hank attended Edison VocTech High School. When he saw a metal clamp his dad made in his machine shop, Hank knew he wanted to be a machinist.

“I was already a machinist before I graduated from high school, and I still have that clamp!” He spent time in the metal shop, the wood shop and the machine shop and won all sorts of awards at craft fairs. Faced with the choice of college or continuing his education while serving in the Marine Corps, Hank chose the USMC. “The decision to follow my personal venture or enter the Marine Corps posed a trade-off, but everywhere I went I learned about my art. In Japan I learned woodcarving.

In Beaufort I worked with driftwood and found objects – I like to call them rescue materials. Instead of painting and carving them, I cleaned the wood and left it natural for the observer’s own interpretation.

I started refinishing furniture and making picture frames.

Then I went back to Okinawa and did more wood carving and learned drawing and painting techniques. When I retired in Beaufort I started

making furniture out of trees.

I designed the chairs for the ‘Gullah Storytelling Project,’ sponsored by the Arts Council of Beaufort County, that were then painted by school children, each representing a story. I was not convinced that what I was doing was actually art until Arianne King-Comer, noted indigo and batik artist, who then had a studio in Beaufort, took me to a folk art festival at the McKissick Museum in Columbia, SC. Arianne, as well as several exhibiting artisans, pointed out all the different types of art and crafts and said to me, ‘See these, this is what you are doing. This is art.’

“As a textile artist, Arianne needed carved wooden stamps to print her fabric and she had lost hers in a fire, so I made

when I was over there I learned how to restore castles walls; I helped rebuild a portion of the stonewall of Colony Castle.

And I worked with silk fabric; instead of doing batik, I painted on silk. I was introduced to the old art form of bog oak sculpture, which is made from wood that is 5,000 to 6,000 years old, and carved with laser. Midland Ireland is filled with great crafts! I also met Michael, a fourth generation peat bog owner and spent two days with him collecting peat – which they use as fuel there.

But the highlight of my trip may have been an evening of music. Mary, a caterer who came to our cottage to prepare a meal of Irish food, played the silver orchestral flute for us. After dinner she took us to a jam session at the local pub

stamps for her. I was making carved wooden Celtic stamps when a group of artists on an exchange program from Ireland saw them and invited me to go to Ireland in June of this year, as part of the program. I showed them how to make stamps and do batik.”

Not one to let any opportunity escape, Hank said, “Of course,

“Everything works on a principle; I don’t know why people can’t figure that out. I love art for arts sake. My work is very diverse – I haven’t picked one art form to work in. Therefore, people don’t always recognize my art; I had a problem with that for a

while because lots of artists’ work is instantly recognizable. I read a biography about Pablo Picasso; he intrigued me because he changed mediums so much. I’ve been a machinist, a carpenter, a furniture maker, a framer; I draw, paint, and assemble collages, I don’t think I can do anything but be diverse.

As a machinist, everything was uniform or duplicated; I think when it comes to art, everything should be an individual.”

Hank is a firm believer in the principle of “passing it forward”.

He has held two shows for emerging artists. One, entitled “Do You See What I See?” was the first venue for those artists. “They were people I had personally met who may not have had confidence about their work for one reason or another. When I talked to them, the advice I gave them was to be careful about discussing their art with people who may not be objective. The killer word for artists is OK. It’s not good or bad; OK cannot be justified. You can’t straddle the fence when talking to artists. All artists really want is for their art to be seen. I remember my first show. It was a one-man show and I talked to people who were there but I remained distant, I tried to position myself where I could see everyone because I was trying to read their lips! We start out when we are children; we bring home our art and hope our parents put it on the refrigerator.

If they don’t, it’s the kiss of death for the artist in the child.”

Aside from his art, Hank’s interests are far and wide. He loves to play golf and has won quite a few awards; he came in first in his flight at a Parris Island tournament when he was in the Marines. He is an avid reader, “I read anything and everything: science fiction, self-help books, detective novels, etc. I still have my collection of comic books from when I was a child. I love books!

When I read, I picture things; later on, I sometimes wonder if I’m experiencing déjà vu, or the author just described it so well.”

Heartworm disease is caused by an infestation of worms that grow up to 14 inches long and live in the bloodstream flowing from a dog’s heart to its lungs.

Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes, which pick up baby heartworms (microfilaria) when they bite an infected dog. Once the worms become adults, they reproduce in the pulmonary arteries. The more heartworms present and the longer they’re there, the more damage they do to the dog’s lungs and heart. This can progress to heart failure and a cascade of injuries to other organs. The most common symptoms of heartworm disease are coughing and weight Marikay Campbell, DVM loss.

Port Royal Veterinary Hospital Many medications are available from veterinarians that will kill the worms before they mature and therefore prevent the infection. The most popular preventatives are used once a month and remove any larvae acquired in the preceding 30 days. After about 30 days in the body, the larvae are much more resistant to being killed, so medications should be given or applied as regularly as possible. Even though these preventatives are 98-99% effective, yearly testing is recommended to ensure your dog is negative before being given a preventative.

A missed dose of topical or spit-out pill can lead to a potentially deadly situation if worms mature and begin to reproduce.

There’s only one medication approved for treating dogs that’ve already been infected with heartworms.

While it’s safer than previous ones, treating the disease is much riskier and more expensive than preventing it. Probably the most difficult part of treatment is that the patient must be kept quiet for 4-8 weeks. Activity during this period can lead to heart attack or stroke, depending on where a worm piece or blood clot lodges.

As long as there are mosquitoes – and they’re here year-round in the Lowcountry - heartworm disease will be a threat and a reality.

Preventive medications generally cost from $3 to $20 per month. This might seem like a lot, but heartworm treatment can cost you hundreds - or the life of your pet if you don’t. Why risk it?

Son, Hank, is a math teacher in Columbia, SC, with wife Nikki and daughter Haley; Jason is a human resource manager in Charlotte, NC; and daughter Shanette is currently a military wife in New Mexico with husband Andre and (2) sons, Del’Shawn and Dairrion. “Now that our children are grown and gone, we have time for the two of us.” Sundays they worship at New Life Christ Ministries where Hank has served as Deacon prior to his Marine Corps retirement. “Along with family, my spiritual beliefs are very important to me. Church is a source of strength and support that balances out the rest of my world.”

I’m doing what I love to do. I share information within the art community; I got it from somewhere, so I don’t mind sharing.”

Many artists believe that each piece of art has a life of it’s own.

In Hank’s words, “Any time an artist makes a piece, he should be wary of criticism because that influence makes the piece belong to the critic. Spiritually everything we create is for someone; it may not get to them in (what we perceive as) our lifetime, but the right person will receive that piece. If the criticism makes the artist change something, the right person will never receive that work of art; they will intuitively see the change and recognize that it is not for them.”

Style FAUX VOILA!: CHRISTOPHER DAUGHETY •Questions by MARY ELLEN THOMPSON

S

oft-spoken native son, Christopher Daughety is a specialist in decorative painting and faux finishes. He has recently repainted the front entry doors of The Baptist Church of Beaufort on Charles Street, to resemble heart pine matching the original floors inside the church.

BL: Why do you think this project is historically significant?

CD: The Baptist Church of Beaufort is synonymous with Beaufort. It’s been there so long, it’s right downtown. These doors add beauty to the front of the church, they are what you see when you drive down the street; what the tourists with their cameras see. There are eight doors, two of them are nine feet tall, the others are seven feet.

The fact that they all look the same now insures visual harmony.

BL: How old are these doors?

CD: I was told they are about 150 years old.

BL: Why were these doors painted instead of having them stripped and refinished?

CD: The doors are probably oak, with age and sun damage the wood would be dingy and have no luster to it anymore. Also, they wouldn’t be in keeping with the heart pine floors inside the church, and the stoops. They were painted in a faux finish about twelve years ago when the church underwent renovations, but the damage from the sun’s ultra-violet rays damaged the finish over time. Now the doors are coated with a special varnish to protect them from the UV rays.

BL: Is this the first church for which you’ve done work?

CD: No. I’ve painted backdrop murals, scenery and clouds, a cloudscape with a descending dove, and applied gold-leaf lettering in other churches in Beaufort.

BL: How long have you been doing decorative painting?

CD: I attended seminars and workshops given in Atlanta by Pro Faux in 1995, and Donna’s Design Faux Finish and Business Workshops in 1998. I faux paint nine different wood grains and eight marble finishes; as well as all sorts of other decorative paint techniques.

BL: What is your favorite painting project?

CD: I would have to say these doors. I really love the doors, it gave me great joy to paint them.

BL: Describe the process of painting them, please.

CD: It’s called “Faux Bois,” which is the process of simulating woodgrain by use of paint, sanding, priming, applying a base coat, glazing, and finishing with a protective coating, in this case a marine varnish. Given the appropriate drying time, it took about three weeks to complete the project.

BL: What do you like to do in your free time?

CD: I play easy listening classical guitar.

That classical finger picking style is really my bag. I’m just getting started in getting out and playing in restaurants. I enjoy playing at the bluegrass jam sessions they

have at the Foolish Frog on Saint Helena Island. Sometimes when the jam session is over I will go inside the restaurant and serenade people while they are dining; I love to entertain people while they are having dinner. I also enjoy being on the water - every time I get the chance, I’m on the water in Beaufort - fishing, oystering.

From the time I took the training wheels off my bike, I’d grab a five gallon bucket and head for the creeks. I’m no stranger to pluff mud between the toes! Beaufort itself is a festivity. I like to say ‘Don’t come to Beaufort unless you plan to stay here for the rest of your life.’ Without being able to consult my crystal ball, I don’t see any reason why I would ever leave Beaufort.

Painting, music, and fishing - that’s enough to fill up my life in Beaufort, SC. History of The Baptist Church of Beaufort, from their website: “The Baptist Church of Beaufort was a ‘branch’ of Euthaw Baptist Church on the mainland when Rev. Henry Holcomb became the first resident mission pastor in 1795.

Thomas Jefferson was president when we formally constituted as The Baptist Church of Beaufort in 1804... Andrew Jackson was president during the Beaufort Great Revival of 1831. This was a landmark event for The Baptist Church of Beaufort and St. Helena Episcopal with spiritual reverberations felt for generations... Harvard-educated Richard Fuller abandoned his law practice to pastor The Baptist Church of Beaufort.

On his ordination day he baptized 107 candidates.

Led by the wealthy Fuller, the present sanctuary was completed in 1844 at a cost of $17,000. Since most of the 2,200 church members were slaves, Fuller raised funds through preaching engagements in surrounding states and gifts from his own fortune. This building is considered one of the finest examples of Greek revival

architecture in the country and skilled slave artisans created the molded plaster decorations.

At one time, leading Baptist churches in Atlanta, Philadelphia, Washington, Charleston, Baltimore, and Houston were all led by Beaufort trained pastors.

The maximum membership was reached before the War Between the States in 1857 with 183 white members and 3557 slaves; this included several missions on the islands.

By November 1861 when federal forces occupied Beaufort and white residents fled, this church counted 166 white members and 3,557 African-Americans. For the next four this was a Union town and the church building was a hospital for black soldiers.

Graffiti is still visible on the belfry beams.

When a remnant reclaimed their chapel in 1866, a faithful black deacon brought in the communion silver he had hidden in his feather bed. Old pews were reinstalled without their doors, and the communion table was recovered from Charleston.

The sanctuary ceiling was meticulously restored in 1950 using 98 percent of the original rosettes. Hurricane Gracie in 1959 damaged roof, walls, and carpet but spared the precious ceiling.

The most comprehensive renovation to date took place in 1997-1998. The west wall was pushed back 25 feet and the sanctuary enlarged to create a new chancel and more flexible pulpit area. The historic pipe organ with 70 ranks, largest in the lowcountry, was added. Seventy-five percent of the exterior stucco was matched and replaced, and interior walls underwent extensive renewal. Historic colors - 17 shades of white - were used, and original heart pine floors revealed for the first time in memory.” The master artistry of Christopher Daughety evokes memories of the historic glory of grand and classical architecture.

WHAT EXACTLY IS A KAZOO?

A kazoo is a “mirilton” instrument, which means sound is produced by a vibrating membrane, making it something of a “singing drum”. At Kazoobie, Inc. a visitor has the opportunity to create their own kazoo (which is really fun!) and get a kazoo lesson. The key is not to blow into it but rather to hum or sing. Musicians from Eric Clapton to Frank Zappa have utilized the kazoo; in fact there are entire kazoo bands. The Kazoo Museum has on display a Ringo Starr record, ”You’re Sixteen” which features a memorable kazoo solo performed by Paul McCartney at the end of the song.

Founded in 1997 by Rick Hubbard ( aka “The King of Kazoo”), the company started in Hilton Head, moved to Florida, and then relocated back to

The answer is- everywhere! Stephen says their kazoos have been sent to, “Every continent except Antarctica.” Over the last few years 15,000 have been sent to armed forces serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, in fact Stephen says his favorite photograph is of a squad of soldiers in full combat gear standing in front of a battle area humming into their kazoos.

“Mystery surrounds the story of the kazoo’s creation, though it was undoubtedly invented in the United States of America. Legend has it that Alabama Vest, an African American, conceived of the kazoo and brought the idea to German-American clockmaker Thaddeus Von Clegg. Vest and Von Clegg completed the first kazoo in the 1840s and introduced it to the world at the 1852 Georgia State Fair. The kazoo was a success from the start and was soon being sold across the region as the “Down South Submarine.”

South Carolina. Primarily an internet and phone order business, Kazoobie, Inc. originally sold kazoos made by other companies but when a plastic kazoo maker in Detroit was closing up shop they bought the company and its assets, putting Kazoobie, Inc. in the manufacturing business. The pieces of the kazoos are made with their equipment in Florida and all the assembly and distribution work is done here in Beaufort.

Stephen is a third generation Beaufortonian who says “In order to grow we had to move out of our location in Florida, so if we were going to move, we thought why not move back home?” Here to stay, Stephen and his wife Melissa (a teacher at St. Helena Elementary) have just finished renovating a house in Beaufort where they live with their Basset hound Oliver.

In June 2010, the Kazoo Museum moved cross country from Seattle, Washington to be part of the Kazoobie factory. Started

by Boaz Frankel in 2007, the museum has over 200 kazoo related items including rare kazoos and sheet music. Installing the museum in the empty showroom space (the factory is located at a former lighting company), gave Stephen the chance to “Fulfill one of our dreams and create a gift shop where people could actually shop for kazoos and other instruments in person.”

Says Boaz, “There are so few instruments that were invented in the United States so I think it’s important to celebrate the kazoo and to educate the public about its unique history. I love walking through the museum and seeing all the musical and technical innovations that developed over the years, and then you can walk right into a modern kazoo factory and witness the future of kazoos in progress.”

Stephen visits many schools where he introduces this unique American instrument to new generations, and he says teachers love his kazoos because “We use a polypropylene plastic so our

kazoo is the best quality because it produces a loud sound, and it is safe, clean and water proof. The teachers can wash and reuse them!”

In addition the Kazoobie, Inc. is the Official Supplier of the Red Hat Society’s official instrument, which is...the kazoo. They manufacture thousands of red and purple (the official Red Hat Society’s colors) kazoos for the members, who are known to whip out a kazoo and ‘toot’ their own horn at the drop of a hat!

As Stephen says, “We sell fun for a living!”

Curator Boaz Frankel says, “I can’t imagine a better home for the Kazoo Museum - right next to the nation’s only major kazoo factory and less than two hundred miles from the birthplace of the instrument.” Stephen says, “Come see the history of an American instrument!”

Welcome To Your Tour Of Summit Place of Beaufort I’m so glad you stopped in today. Please come into my office where we can talk.

I’d like to get to know you and learn more about your loved one’s needs.

Our lovely community is all on one floor and has 82 beds. This is our Assisted Living side and our other side is our Seasons Memory Care secured unit.

As you can see as we start our tour, our lobby and dining room look like a resort setting.

Here on the left is our daily menu with a choice of meals all served restaurant style. Each table has lovely flowers and is set up with fluted napkins in goblets.

We are fortunate to have a real Chef in our kitchen – the food is so good!

We just passed our big Activities Room where our Activities Director and 3 assistants provide exciting fun, music therapy, arts and crafts, games, church services, sports, flower arranging, daily exercises; and Happy Hour. Our bus trips include movies and lunches out plus fun trips to the beach and festivals in town. An Historic Carriage Tour is planned this month. (the bus also provides transportation to doctor’s appointments in the AM). Our Season’s residents also have planned daily activities and several weekly bus outings. (ice cream trips are their favorite) Going down our hall we see the big Live Oak trees outside the large windows.

They surround our building which once housed the Trask family plantation that burned down.

Let’s walk out to our gazebo and deck overlooking Battery Creek. We are the only Assisted Living Community on the water in Beaufort. Our residents and families enjoy relaxing in the shade and looking at the water from this deck. Even at low tide, the birds are fun to watch.

Our monthly Newsletter always has a family night invitation for a party get-together.

Now let’s go back in to see some rooms.

Most of our rooms are studios with full baths and kitchenettes. We do have one and two bedroom apartments and they are always full with a waitlist. However, most of our residents are very active and do not stay in their rooms all day.

There is so much to do, friends to be made, dinner and lunch dates, and many activities and entertainers who come in to visit. Many of our Assisted Living residents have their own cars.

I’m happy I could show you our available rooms and also show you how lovely many families have decorated theirs.

Since you must provide your own furniture (except for a short respite stay), it helps the move-in adjustment when they have their own things around them.

This is our new Library Lounge with sunny windows and a water view. The TV room is over by the Caregiver’s Station. At the end of the hall is the door to the resident’s garden. Those who have a green thumb have planted veggies and flowers. We all enjoyed their wonderful tomatoes.

Did I mention that the price sheet I gave you includes all utilities, laundry, housekeeping, transportation, all meals and activities, plus caregivers on duty 24/7 and our nurse on duty and on call 24/7.

We are proud of our well-trained, experienced and compassionate Caregivers and honor them monthly. We also provide trained Med-techs who gives out the needed medications at the correct time.

We also have the services offered in our Beauty Shop; Exercise and PT room; Spa room with whirlpool tub; Alert call systems in each room and choice of an individual necklace call button. T V and phone hookups are in each room.

All this seems to be just what your loved

one would enjoy. From what you have told me about their needs and likes, they would find a happy family with us. It is comforting for you to know that their care level needs will be met as they age over the years.

This will be their home and you are always invited to stay for a meal, take them out to your home or out for a meal and are welcomed to visit anytime.

Redfish Fans Are In For A Treat

I

hope everyone is having a good holiday season in the low country, and everyone is buying new fishing gear for those presents under the tree. It’s always amazed me how good a Yo-Zuri or Spro lure makes the perfect stocking stuffer.

December in our area is the height of the inshore fishing season. The live bait is getting a bit hard to find as the water temperatures keep getting colder. The good news with that is the redfish and trout are hungrier because of the lack of food and will hit your artificial bait a lot easier now. In December these temperatures are just getting down into the mid to lower 50’s.

This will start to drive the shrimp out of the shallows and into the deeper holes in the creeks and rivers. When looking for trout this time of year I like to target areas in creeks that are about 8’-10’ deep and drop off into a hole from 12’ to 18’ deep. This is when you the angler need to really slow down your presentation.

I mean slow it down. If you target these areas you will find an abundance of fish in these holes where the temperatures are a few degrees warmer down deep and what bait that is still around will gather and so do the trout. You can take a plastic bait such as a Bass Assassin, Gulp or Z-man grub or shrimp imitation and work them slowly across the bottom with great success. Did I say work your bait slowly, good. I mean bounce your gig across the bottom about 1’-2’ every 2 to 3 minutes. You will have good success with this and the size of the trout will usually be much bigger. Color will make a difference this time of year as well. If you do not get a strike in 15 minutes or so change the color of you bait. Green tones and darker colors will do well this time of year. These same creeks are good for trolling for trout if thats your method. Again, slow trolling a bait up a creek is a good way to catch and locate trout. I like to use green and red plastics as well as 3” Yo-Zuri hard body baits for this. If you have multiple hook ups turn off your motor, anchor up and see if they will continue biting.

You redfish fans are also in for a treat this time of year. When the temperatures drop like this our marsh begins to die for the winter and our water will get very clear. This is a great time to sight fish for redfish on the numerous flats we have around the county. When approaching your favorite flat, turn off your big motor and get on the trolling motor or pole about 80-100 yards away. Keep quiet, these guys are spooky. When things get quiet out there you have to as well, and if you can see them, they can see you. Redfish will get up on the flats during the incoming tide to get warm in the shallow water warmed by the sun. This is a great time to get out the fly rod for these fish. A #8 weight with wieght forward, floating line is the ticket for your best results. There are some good shrimp imitations that do well, as well as some for mud minnows. Spinning tackle is always a good tool for redfish. Use Berkeley Gulp, Z-man or live bait if you like to target these fish. Redfish will also target old docks

and other structure to ambush their pray. Just remember your presentation to these fish must be slow and stealth.

As Janurary comes around, conditions are slowing down even more and temperatures are still dropping. The same methods you used in December may seem to be getting sluggish. Go to our old friend the mud minnow. If there is anything a redfish loves is a big old mud minnow that can’t swim as fast as they can. If things are still slow try, my old favorite. Put two mud minnows on the same hook and hook one backwards so they will be swimming in opposite directions. This will make the minnows fight each other and that big old redfish just won’t be able to stand any of that.

After all of that fishing we just talked about, don’t forget to go offshore for the grouper, snapper and tuna bite that is awesome this time of year. Remember our inshore charter fishing trips start about $350 for a half day and offshore starts about $675.

he Old Village Association (OVA) was formed in 2003 to promote the Town of Port Royal and its businesses. It is a non-profit corporation with a membership that consists of business owners and residents. The Members volunteer their time to produce festivals and other special events to attract tourism and stimulate economic growth while encouraging a small-town, community atmosphere.

The Old Village Association recently opened The Port Royal Visitors and Welcome Center to provide visitors and citizens a place to gather information about the town and its business community. The Center is housed in the front portion of the LowCountry Estuarium on Paris Avenue. The Estuarium is a non-profit, learning facility that houses a wide array of aquatic creatures and exhibits that help educate guests about the unique flora and fauna found in the area.

Both organizations share a common goal of promoting the Town while keeping a watchful eye on the preservation and protection of its valuable natural resources.

Frazier returns to receive The Order

orn Joseph William “Joe” Frazier on January 12, 1944 in Beaufort, South Carolina, Smokin Joe Frazier became one of the most well known heavyweight champions in boxing history, and the only professional boxer to hail from Beaufort.

In September, the former heavyweight champion returned to his native land to receive the Order of the Palmetto from Governor Mark Sanford. Despite the rainy day, a large crows gathered to watch the Governor give the highest civilian award to Frazier.

“It was truly a great honor,” said Frazier. “It was great to be in Beaufort again.”

His beginnings in Beaufort saw him in the fields picking cotton and chopping wood with his father on the family’s 10acre property. Beaufort County was still segregated then, and Frazier began to realize that he was not going to accomplish his dream in the South. Neither boxing gyms, nor organized fighting events existed in or around Beaufort. So, in 1960, Frazier went to Philadelphia to chase his dream.

On February 16, 1967, Frazier knocked out Buster Mathis in the 11th round to become world champion and heavyweight champion, a title that had been taken from Muhammad Ali for his refusal to be drafted into the military. In 1970, Frazier became the undisputed world champion after defeating Jimmy Ellis.

Perhaps the most well known fight in boxing history, “Fight of the Century,” was Frazier’s introduction to world-wide acknowledgement. With a world-wide television audience, the 27-year old Frazier had lost many of the earlier rounds, but two knockdowns of Ali in the 11th and 15th rounds showed that Frazier was clearly in control of the fight. Frazier won by unanimous decision, and the two both spent time in the hospital after the fight. But that was only the first of their three fights.

Frazier would lose the final two fights against Ali in 1974 and 1975.

After retiring in 1981, Frazier opened a boxing gym in Philadelphia where he trained boxers until the gym closed in 2009.

Frazier’s return to Beaufort sparked questions as to whether he had intentions of returning to open a gym here, but Frazier just replied, “That would be nice. Maybe I will comeback to do that.”

Frazier returns to Beaufort a couple times a year to visit, though his parents and brothers and sisters have all passed. Many of his relatives still live on the property where he grew up as a young boy.

Where is Dr. Seuss when I need him? Cat Tales is a delightful collection of art and stories to raise money for the feral cat population on Dataw Island. It is a collection of two little books, hand assembled, and packaged together; each contains six miniature stories tucked into the pages behind “cat ears.” The book’s original illustrations are by artist Lynn Brown, and the little individual story books are written and/or illustrated by nine Dataw writers and seven artists.

The books provide facts about feral cats and the Dataw Island Feline Foundation (DIFF). The little story books were created on the whim of the writers. Proceeds from the sales will, according to their mission statement, “Stabilize the population and provide assistance to feral and free ranging cats on Dataw Island, SC through feeding, spaying, neutering and adoption programs; and to provide public education on feral cat management.”

According to feralcat.com: “Feral cats are the ‘wild’ offspring of domestic cats and are primarily the result of pet owners’ abandonment or failure to spay and neuter their animals, allowing them to breed uncontrolled.” DIFF says: “Wouldn’t it be easier to just rid the island of all feral cats? No, it really wouldn’t. It is not possible to clear out every single feral cat, and as soon as you get the numbers down to almost none, another feral colony develops. So caring for the feral cats we have prevents them from reproducing, stabilizes their numbers, and, since they are territorial, prevents new colonies from establishing themselves. What is the downside of allowing these feral cats to live on our island? Probably the only one is the likelihood of the cats destroying birds. Yes, that will happen, but not nearly to the extent that you might think. Hungry cats are much more likely to get into garbage than hunt birds. And these cats are well fed, therefore not hungry. Birds are much more vulnerable to pesticides, loss of habitat, and predators such as snakes, owls, hawks, eagles, and even alligators than they are to cats.

“Are the feral cats on Dataw of any value to the island? Are you surprised to learn that the answer is a big YES? How do you feel about the presence of mice and marsh rats on your property, or even within your home? Probably not so good. Well, there is no doubt that the island’s feral cats hold down the population of nuisances such as these.”

his is an “only in Beaufort” story. Only in Beaufort are we lucky enough to catch frequent sightings of bottlenose dolphins in our waters and only in Beaufort would the unlikely combination of an eight year old writer, the city’s Mayor and an octogenarian illustrator result in an important book starring a pink dolphin.

“The Pink Dolphin” is a book created by three collaborators about collaboration. Although the story stands quite nicely on its own, there is a deeper message about the necessity working together during challenging times for the benefit of the whole community. Like all the best children’s stories, The Pink Dolphin features a character that is ‘different’ than the rest, in this case not only in color but in her attitude towards humans.

Unlike the other dolphins she enjoys interacting with the shrimpers and when a crisis hits, she is able to inspire the other dolphins into transforming their attitudes and together they all save the day.

In the book it takes one unique character to create change. To create the book it took three unique characters.

The Mayor Mayor Billy Keyserling says, “When I was campaigning for Mayor in 2008, little did I know that we would soon be faced with the largest financial crisis of our generation. As Mayor I had to change the way we do business in order to respond to the situation. “ In a conversation with Thomas McDermott-Post, then a third grade student, Mayor Keyserling talked about how hard times could bring people together to enact change, but that it was a challenge to inspire a community to work cooperatively.

“I wanted to engage people. I had been handing out the book ‘The Little Engine That Could’ but I wanted something more real. Thomas got my point and wrote this story.”

Private dinner parties are the highlight of the evening! The concept originated in 1989, when the Foundation organized an event “to raise money for the Hospital.”

Tickets were sent to people in the community, and as RSVPs came in, board members invited guests to their homes for dinner before the “Ball.” And that’s how a unique and successful idea was born. Over the years, production of the Ball has become a well-oiled machine.

Volunteers from throughout the community are organized in committees – each team with its own chair – to plan and orchestrate the evening.

This year, there will be over 500 dinners served to guests in over 50 homes. Imagine all the volunteers it requires to manage just this part of the Ball! It all begins with volunteers sending out requests to potential hosts who respond by agreeing to prepare meals, set tables and serve as hosts for the evening. Other teams of volunteers are busily engaged in locating and obtaining donations of wonderful and appealing auction items. (This year, attendees can choose to bid on foreign travel, having gourmet meals delivered, fur trimmed cashmere capes and paintings by local artists, just to name a few.) Still other volunteers serve on committee to address invitation; produce the auction booklet; create an elegant setting at the Lyceum; choose wine and delicious desserts;

publicize and promote the event; plan a “thank you” party; and even find and train teenagers to valet park cars.

Beaufort is a growing community and its growth called for a new committee this year named “Introduction to the Ball.” The same concept as privately hosted dinner parties was adapted to host cocktail parties in six neighborhoods throughout the Beaufort area. These events brought people together to learn about the Foundation, the Valentine Ball and plans for the expanded Emergency Center.

It takes a multitude of volunteers to help the Hospital Foundation organize and orchestrate this quintessential event every year. But, more importantly, it requires the spirit of an incredible community coming together year in and year out to deliver a premier, highly successful event! In February, the Ball will celebrate its 22nd consecutive year! Since inception, it has raised over $3,000,000, an unbelievable amount.

Each year, proceeds are earmarked for various departments of the Hospital.

They have been directed to Cardiac Care, Cancer Care, HealthLink, Health Career Scholarships, Woman’s Services and LifeFit Wellness. This year, proceeds from the Ball again are earmarked to help with expansion and updating of the George N. Pratt MD and Sarah Meyer Pratt Emergency Center (ER).

Expansion of the Emergency Center is a high priority for the hospital and the community. This facility now handles almost 40,000 visits each year, far exceeding the capacity of clinical and support space. Expansion and renovation will provide faster and more efficient care of patients; larger and friendlier waiting areas, and more triage rooms are included in the plans. Construction projected to start in May of 2011 will expand the Center from 9,500 sq. ft. to almost 20,600 sq. ft. Philanthropy – including anticipated proceeds of $550,000 from the Valentine Ball in 2010, 2011 and 2012 – is targeted to cover over 20% of the overall project.

Each year, the Ball has a theme to help tie together printed material, decorations and the dinner parties. Themes have covered many countries and seasons.

This year, the theme is “Love in Any Language” which suggests and supports the inclusiveness of the Ball and the Emergency Center. It brings to mind all the people who work hard to make the Ball successful. It embraces all the people who work in the Emergency Center and the people who receive their care. It signifies “Love,” with a big “L,” and has no language barriers, because Beaufort Memorial Hospital with its Emergency Center is there for any language 24 hours each day and 365 days each year!

Friends of Hunting Island and Hunting Island State Park Present 3rd Annual Pelican Plunge New Year’s Day event raises money for Friends’ education outreach programs

riends of Hunting Island State Park (FOHI) and the Hunting Island State Park announced that they are jointly presenting the Low Country version of the everpopular Polar Bear Plunges with the 3rd Annual Pelican Plunge at Hunting Island State Park Lighthouse (North) Beach on January 1st, 2011 at 1:00 pm.

The scene for the 2nd plunge was wet and wild: “Ready?

Set. Goooooo!” shouted Hunting Island State Park Manager Jeff Atkins. And with that, hundreds of Pelican Plungers raced for the cold Atlantic on the first day of 2010. As a fabulous steel band played, upwards to 400 people dove into the roaring surf or cheered the brave souls on.

Not only did the Plunge draw so many plungers and spectators to the park for the “celebration”, but just as important the event raised over $3,000 for the Friends’ efforts to bring Beaufort County students to the park as part of the Discover Carolina program, in which students participate in hands-on educational field trips designed specifically to fulfill South Carolina-accredited science standards.

This third annual Pelican Plunge will see bathers of all ages jumping into the surf to greet the New Year. Plunger donations will again be raised on behalf of the “Discover Carolina” school program, administered by the Friends and the Park. Individuals and teams are encouraged to sign up sponsors to pay them to plunge. This year the person or team that raises the most money will win a fantastic grand prize. Commemorative Pelican

Hunting Island State Park is one of South Carolina’s most popular parks with more than 1.2 million visitors a year. “This is all about fun,” said Park Manager Jeff Atkins, “and we hope to introduce even more people to our beautiful park and all it has to offer while participating in such a worthy cause. Not only was our second Plunge event great, it was a blast for everyone who came out. We are really looking forward to doing this a third time and for many years to come.”

“The Friends are involved in so many activities and improvements at the park, so that when Jeff and his staff came to us with this idea back in 2008, we signed up immediately,” said Friends president, Bonnie Wright. “Hunting Island is a treasure right in our backyard and here is another exciting reason to enjoy it all year round.”

Bathers and their cheering sections will gather for registration at the picnic area near the lighthouse beginning at 12:00 noon. Schools, government offices, fire and police, Rotary Clubs and other organizations are invited to get friends and family to donate so as to entice as many as possible to take the Plunge! When the clock strikes 1:00 pm it will be time for the first swim of 2011—however brief that may be!

Breakwater Rest au rant and Bar

Only one year? It feels like the ‘new’ Breakwater Restaurant & Bar has been here for years. When they closed their West Street restaurant in 2009, locals worried that they were never going to enjoy another fantastic Breakwater meal.

But those fears were put to rest a year ago on opening night at the new Carteret Street location. Not only was the food as wonderful as ever, the new space was original, inviting and just plain fabulous. The restaurant’s three partners, Donna and Gary Lang and Beth Shaw, had pulled off an almost impossible feat- they had vastly improved on their own beloved local institution.

Restaurants generally fall into two categories, being either the “Special Occasion” place, or the relaxed dinner at the bar place. Breakwater Restaurant & Bar is one of the few eateries that have managed to be both comfortably. The dining room is sleek, modern and intimate, equally perfect for that special birthday dinner or a place to take out of town guests. The lounge and bar is just as sleek and modern, and yet has a “Cheers” vibe that welcomes both locals and visitors .

The Wine One of the most unique features of the restaurant is the Wine Room, a temperature controlled room which can hold up to twelve hundred bottles on the graceful metal racks seen through the glass front wall. “We feel that wine is an integral part of the dining experience,” says General Manager Donna Lang, “so by offering over 75 wines by the glass, it encourages our guests to try selections that other restaurants only offer by the bottle -just ask for a taste if you’re not sure.” In addition to its excellent wine list, Breakwater has become famous for its Wine Dinners, often hosted by visiting vintners, where guests can sample new and exciting wines.

The Bar Any discussion of Breakwater would be remiss without mentioning bartenders Terry Guinn and Taylor Tucker. They are never too busy to greet you with a smile and by the time you sit down your favorite beverage is already on the way. Always ready with a good suggestion on a regional beer, fine scotch or new cocktail, they truly make visiting the bar feel like you are at the best party in town.

Recession Menu & Sunday Specials Started at the former location on West Street, the mid week “Recession Menu” was so popular that the idea has been carried over to present location. “We tried to change the name of this menu (T.G.I.T) but everyone kept calling it the ‘Recession Menu’ so beginning November it was back to its former name and we added Wednesday. It’s so popular that if you don’t have a reservation it’s hard to get a seat.” says Donna.

On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, early diners (5 to 6:30 p.m.) can have two courses at a set price plus ‘by the glass’ wine specials. It is a great opportunity to have a marvelous meal at ‘wallet friendly’ prices.

Don’t feel like cooking on a Sunday evening? Come downtown because recently Breakwater has been serving dinner on Sundays (5 p.m. to 9 p.m.), offering the regular menu plus comfort food “Blue Plate Specials”, such as fried chicken. The game is on in the bar and it’s a congenial place to stop and cheer your team while enjoying great food (try the Angus sliders) and cold beverages!

Top Tips For Finding Your Perfect Wedding Band

When it comes to wedding rings, engagement rings tend to steal the spotlight. They embody the excitement of your engagement and come with the timeless story of how he proposed. Yet, given what marriage stands for--a lifetime commitment to one another--it’s the wedding bands that have the greatest symbolism.

While finding the perfect ring can be daunting, there are a few tricks to selecting a ring that can help make the purchase as smart as it is sentimental.

Budget. Standard practice is to apply two months’ salary to both bands.

Look for the best value ring for the price. Many retailers are introducing lines of entry-level platinum wedding bands starting at just $500, making the high quality of platinum accessible for most budgets.

Quality. Selecting the highest quality ring can require a greater investment up front, but it pays off in the long run. Choose a metal for its natural color to save on maintenance costs. Eighteen-kt. gold is preferred for yellow bands; for white metal, however, platinum is ideal. As celebrity wedding planner David Tutera™ explains, “Buy a white setting that will actually stay white. Unlike white gold, platinum is naturally white and doesn’t change color or need replating.”

Durability. You’ll be wearing your ring every day for the rest of your life, so you want to make sure it’s durable. Platinum is what Tutera™ refers to as the “ultimate safety clasp.” Of all the precious metals, it’s the most dense and it holds diamonds most securely. Everyday wear also means scratches, so take note of a metal’s “scratch factor.” Platinum merely displaces metal when scratched, whereas gold actually loses metal.

Metal Harmony. There is no rule that says his and her wedding bands have to match. In fact, 60 percent of women want diamonds, while 85 percent of men don’t. It is wise, however, to match metals since it shows you two are in sync--O’Connor refers to this as “metal harmony.”

So, as you plan your dream wedding, just remember--your rings are one of the few items that last beyond the cake and flowers; make sure they’ll be there to reflect “I do” forever.
