VMFA(AW)-224 Marines deploy to Unit Deployment Program

MCAS BEAUFORT – More than 200 Marines and Sailors from Marine All Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 224, known as the Fighting Bengals, and Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 31, known as the Stingers, departed Beaufort Wednesday, July 7 for a six-month deployment to the Western Pacific region as part of the Marine Corps Unit Deployment Program in support of Pacific Command and Marine Forces Pacific. The Fighting Bengals, will support and participate in a multi-national exercise called the “Rim of the Pacific Exercise” taking place in and around Hawaii this summer. The United states will join participants from Canada, Chile, Colombia, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Peru, South Korea, Singapore and Thailand. In addition, the Bengals will be supporting exercises in Australia, the Philippines, Okinawa, and Japan. VMFA(AW)-224’s Marines and Sailors will have the opportunity to visit historic World War II battle sites, including some locations where Bengals fought and served during World War II, such as Hawaii and Okinawa. ecently, I was able to attend my first ever Water Festival in Beaufort. I had heard all the hype, but didn’t quite know what to expect.

The opening night ceremonies included a spectacular fireworks display. I have always loved watching fireworks over the water. The Water Festival fireworks display was fabulous. A wonderful array of colors, sparkling along the water…..a truly beautiful sight to see.

On the Cover As one of the sponsors of the event, we were allowed to set up a booth during the first Saturday of the event. Getting there early in the morning to unload our B EAUFORT, P ORT R OYAL A ND T HE S EA I SLANDS materials, I was amazed at the amount of people already on the streets!

Afterward, we had to find parking and then return to our booth for set up.

Walking back into the park, I was able to see all the vendors lined along the way. It was 9:30 in the morning….and there were people everywhere!

As we began laying our materials out on the table, people started coming up Carlton Bruner: and talking to us. We couldn’t get the magazines out fast enough!

There were four of us there to “man” the booth, so we each got to take some time to walk through the park, look at each of the vendor’s booths and enjoy the day’s activities.

There were raft races going on all day, bocce tournaments, badminton…. : Als o hustle and bustle of people everywhere, food vendors, lemonade stands, hot dog stands…..the activity was amazing.

I wish I could say that I was able to attend the festival everyday, but, AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2010 unfortunately, that thing called work sometimes gets in the way. I was able to attend some of the other festivities of the week, and each time I found my way Carlton Bruner on board of the yacht “Secret Love” in Boston Harbor for the to downtown Beaufort, my experience was amazing!

Susan Deloach was born Susan Bessinger in Beaufort, where she still resides with her husband Larry and sons Hudson and Tucker. Susan has a gift for capturing the personality and unique essence of her subject whether on location or in the studio. Her portraits are as diverse as the personalities of the people she photographs some are edgy, some joyful, but all have one thing in common: the sensitive, skilled and thoughtful approach of the artist behind the camera.

Paul Nurnberg is an award-winning photographer, who has lived in Beaufort, SC since 1996.

Focusing on a variety of commercial advertising work including people, lifestyle, products and architecture, Paul also photographs select weddings. His work appears regularly in national magazines and regional advertising.

He is the past national secretary of the Advertising Photographers of America and a four-year board member of the ASMP, SC chapter and remains an active member in both. Paul also offers classes in photography through Artworks and directly from his studio.

Having grown up on the Main Line of Philadelphia and the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Mary Ellen now lives on Saint Helena Island with her Great Dane, Duke. She has a son and a daughter who live in Colorado and New York City. With a degree in business, she has owned several companies including Calypso Car Wash and Oil Change in Naples, Florida and a firm which specialized in French wall upholstery in Philadelphia. She spent several years on a barge cruising the canals of Europe. Her passions include traveling, photography, entertaining and being anywhere on Mary Ellen Thompson the water.

Cindy Reid ascribes to the cocktail napkin motto “I’m not from the South but I got here as quick as I could.” Born and raised on the sleepy Hudson River towns of rural New York, she always knew she was meant to feel sand and not gravel under her feet. She graduated from Mills College in Oakland,CA and spent the next twenty years raising a daughter and working in the retail book business before finally landing in St. Helena, SC. Her work has appeared in About Town, skirt!, Salon.com and she is a regular contributor to Coastal Mariner.”

John Wollwerth is a photographer raised in New York, now living in Beaufort. He specializes in wedding, advertising and architectural photography. John is a member of the American Society of Media Photographers. His work has appeared in such magazines as Coastal Living, South Carolina Homes and Gardens and Period Homes, to name a few. He comes highly recommended by numerous wedding planners, and he travels regularly throughout the region.

David McLeod recently relocated back to Beaufort after retiring from the Army. He originally moved to Beaufort after separating from the Air Force in 1995, where he was a Combat Photographer for 17 yrs. His work has been published in many military magazines, newspapers and books. His work has been used to brief the President as well as go in to the national archives for historical sake.

Now his favorite subjects are nature, landscapes, old buildings and ruins as well as portraits. David is very passionate about his photography and loves to capture that unusual moment showing a person’s personality or a different view of nature.

Bruce Doneff first came to the Beaufort area in 1982 for Peace Corps training at Penn Center, in preparation for an assignment in West Africa. Over the course of a series of jobs in Tokyo and Osaka, Japan and in Edgewater, New Jersey, he made numerous visits back to the Low Country-finally settling here for good in 2006. Doneff runs a Public Relations consultancy with clients in California, New Jersey, and Washington, DC.

I

’ve been fortunate in my 36 (37 by the time this is published) years to have seen and visited many iconic spaces across America. Many of these are located in America’s great cities.

On a recent trip to Boston, on assignment to photograph Beaufort resident Carlton Bruner for the feature Mary Ellen Thompson wrote about him on Page 8, I began thinking about the people that have led me to these places.

Writers and journalists will tell you they don’t get paid a whole to do what they do, and I’d have to agree. However, writers, journalists and photographers do what they do most of the time because they are passionate about people. Not to mention, when you’ve done it long enough, opportunities to travel to new and exciting places do come along.

I was fortunate and thankful to get the call asking if I would consider going to Boston to photograph Bruner. I was excited! But how was I going to cram in a trip so close to the deadline of this issue. Well, a few people made a few phone calls, and the next thing I know I’m in Boston. Not only am I in Boston, I am in one of Boston’s grandest hotels - The Boston Harbor Hotel. It was beautiful, convenient and luxurious to say the least.

It was there I would meet the subject of our cover story, Carlton Bruner. By the time we met up it was 6:30 a.m. at Rowe’s Wharf in front of the Boston Harbor Hotel. Carlton and his friend of 30-plus years, Chris Wunderlich, were truly an entertaining duo that morning. I couldn’t help but thinking in my mind, “My these guys are chipper considering what time it is, and how far they are about to swim.”

At precisely 7 a.m. the olympian swimmers dove into the Boston Harbor and that began a marathon of swimming relays that would see the swimmers all the way to the Boston Lighthouse (10 miles from the start) and all the way back.

It was quite impressive to say the least, and I met many great people affiliated with the Swim Across America Campaign.

I was on a couple different boats throughout the day to get photographs of Carlton swimming, diving and interacting with his group of peers who genuinely were having a great time swimming this long distance. I never set one foot in the waters of the Boston Harbor and even I was tired come the end of the relay at 3 p.m. These swimmers were impressive, and all while raising money for cancer research.

Todd Wood, EDITOR On the final stretch of the swim, which saw all 80 participants swim to the dock, I had a feeling about Bruner and Wunderlich. For whatever reason it was in my head most of the day that these two were going to be among the first to finish the relay, and they were. However, I’m not gonna tell you who was first and second because it wasn’t a race. I do think however, these two former 1996 Olympians might have been racing each other. Congratulations guys, and thank you for making the trip interesting!

The swim began at 7 a.m. and finished at 3 p.m. on Friday, July 16 2010.

“I’m way more comfortable in the water than I am on land.”

Dressed in a soft aqua colored shirt, sitting against a wall of the same color, his eyes mirroring that hue, and using his hands to illustrate his words, Carlton Bruner reminded me of a sea anemone.

Raised in Atlanta, GA, Carlton was introduced to Beaufort in 2004 when his parents bought a house on Cat Island. “I came to help my father with a new boat and fell in love with Beaufort.

I went home to Atlanta and told my wife that we were moving to Beaufort.” It took two years to accomplish the move, and in 2006 they were here. “I thought about being a builder when I came here, but the economy changed that.” Carlton met a neighbor, they became friends, and

CARLTON BRUNER launched an audio-visual technology business together. Carlton had been in that field in Atlanta and brought his experience here where he identified the need. Enthusiastic about an ongoing project on a private island in the Bahamas, they view this as a springboard for taking their business internationally.

Between 1992 and 1996, Carlton Bruner was considered one of the top ten swimmers in the world for both the 800-meter

and 1500-meter freestyle. A gold medalist in the Pan American games in 1995, Carlton represented the US in the 1996 Summer Olympics held in Atlanta, GA, where he placed thirteenth in the 1500-meter freestyle. “I never really made a specific goal to get to the Olympics – I just figured I would. It became my mindset to get there.” And afterward, “It was not being in the Olympics that was so gratifying, it was the process. By age twenty-four I had traveled around the world for free. For a period of time there

were only five (freestylers) in the world that were better. The essence that got to me later in life was the thrill and high of competing against the best. During the Olympic Trials, I stood on the block with seven of the best milers in the country and knew I was going to beat them.”

What got him hooked on competitive swimming? “I don’t like to lose. A fairly competent athlete across the board, I played every sport but football; my parents said no to contact sports, I was not very big. I was the best at swimming. I enjoyed it.” At age six he swam with the summer team, at eight he swam competitively

year round. When he first started, “I hated practice. When I was sent to the pool I stopped at a creek and wet my hair to look as if I’d gone. That only lasted a couple of weeks.”

Obvious adjectives describe Carlton: lithe, compact, energetic, enthusiastic. Dedicated to professionalism, both in his sport and business, Carlton is first and foremost a family man. When he is not working, Carlton says, “I try to be a good husband and father” to his wife, Heather, son Cohen, and daughter, Skylar. Carlton and Heather met in 1996 when they were both attendants at a wedding in Ohio. Heather was also a National Champion swim-

The Boston Harbor Swim is a 22 mile relay around beautiful Boston Harbor Islands. On event day, swimmers and volunteers meet at sunrise at Rowes Wharf outside the Boston Harbor Hotel. They throw down a few cups of coffee and load onto two boats aptly named ‘Mon Amour,’ and ‘Secret Love.’ After spending the day swimming and hanging out with friends on board, all swimmers jump off the boats and swim to shore to find cheering family and friends. The Boston event is smaller than most with a max of around 75 - 80 swimmers and is still one of SAA’s biggest money-makers. Boston swimmers are committed, passionate, and they raise some serious dough. The event has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Perini Quality of Life Clinic at the Dana Farber Hospital.

Hatchlings to sea Rain Or Shine, Turtlers Willingly Walk Miles Every Day, Every Season, Every Year In Search Of One Of The Most Fragile Of Life’s Components - A Turtle Egg.

T

his story was going to be a different story.

I wanted to write about sea turtles and I had heard there was a facility on Pritchard’s Island where the University of South Carolina and the SC Department of Natural Resources conducted sea turtle research. So I thought it would be interesting, and a good excuse for a boat ride, to go out to Pritchard’s Island and poke around with the turtle researchers. Like many of us, I knew the massive female loggerheads came to our beaches to lay their eggs but that was about all I knew and I want to learn more.

Well life has a way of tripping up even the loosest of plans. When it came time to research my article, I discovered the facility was now closed. Now I have no story. Still having a deadline however, I made contact with two local turtle groups, Friends of Hunting Island Turtle Patrol and the Fripp Island Loggerhead Patrol. I found my story.

Most people think of the beach as a great place to lie in the sun, throw a Frisbee and take a swim in the ocean. Our interaction with nature is usually confined to watching the pelicans and seagulls, or cursing the occasional jellyfish. What most of us don’t know is that by the time we arrive at the beach for our day of play, the ‘turtlers’ have already been there and back.

Up Early The day starts early for turtlers. Every morning from May 15 through August 15, many SC beaches are checked for loggerhead sea turtle tracks, known as “crawls”. The sea turtles live most of their life in open water but after

mating season (March to June) the females crawl from the water to the beach, where they dig a hole and lay approximately 100 eggs in what’s known as a clutch. The eggs incubate for an average of 55 days and then the hatchlings emerge to make their way to the ocean. People have been monitoring nests and assisting this process since the 1970’s.

I had made plans to meet the Friends of Hunting Island Turtle Patrol crew at 6 a.m. at the Hunting Island Visitors Center. In my truck at 5:30, travel mug of coffee in hand, I thought sure I had plenty of time. Which I did, until I got to the Harbor Island Bridge and saw the flashing red light which meant the bridge was closed to cars and open for boats. I watched a shrimp boat slowly glide under the bridge in the predawn mist. Beautiful.

Now, running a little late, I got to the Visitors Center just in time to join my crew for the morning.

Karen Whitehead is the Turtle Patrol Leader for the season and has been coming out to Hunting Island every season for seven years. My other guide this morning is Carolyn Westman who has been on the Turtle Patrol for fourteen years. These are experienced turtlers. And fun people – we are already joking around by the time we get from the road to the beach. Karen is all energy and has an encyclopedic knowledge of the sea turtle program. Carolyn is patience personified with my questions.

This morning Karen, Carolyn and I make our way to the Hunting Island campground to walk the stretch of beach at the outmost edge of the park. Buckets and “probers”, the wooden cane like sticks used to probe the sand for eggs, in hand, we set off to look for crawls. (As an untrained observer I carry a bucket and will not be probing if the opportunity comes up.) The buckets are used to relocate the eggs if the clutch is in spot deemed unsafe due to beach erosion or tides that could potentially wash the eggs away or leave them exposed to the ever present predators such as ghost crabs and raccoons.

The sun is just coming up and the tide is slowly coming in as we briskly walk along the beach. Carolyn showed me a picture of the crawl tracks so I would know what we were looking for and I was surprised at how large they were, as I was somehow thinking the tracks would be subtle. On the contrary, the tracks look like a small bulldozer had driven out of the ocean and back in again.

Of course there is nothing subtle about a creature that weighs anywhere from 200 to 300 pounds. Mysterious yes, as there is so much still unknown about it, but the crawls are easy to spot.

We stop and check each nest that has been previously identified, cordoned off and marked with dates. All is well at each nest. We recheck a “false crawl” that had been identified the day before. A false crawl is when a female gets on the beach but turns back to the ocean without depositing any eggs. Just to be sure, Karen probes the sand for any eggs, but none are found.

We turn around and walk the rest of the beach through the campground area, stopping to check nests and look for crawls. A few campers stop and inquire about the nests and my guides take a minute to educate and chat with everyone they encounter. I am impressed with their patience, energy and overall cheerfulness.

Fripp Island Loggerhead Patrol I had such a wonderful time with the Friends of Hunting Island Turtle Patrol that I decided to join the Fripp Island Loggerhead Patrol for a morning of turtle rounds. On the road again at sunrise, I arrive at Janie Lackman’s house on Fripp Island just as dawn breaks. Janie is the FILP team leader and is out walking the beach every morning checking for crawls and monitoring nests. While we are waiting for all the other patrol members Janie and her team laugh and chat, clearly this is a group of people who are happy to be here, happy to be on the beach together on this gorgeous morning.

We set off to investigate a reported crawl and even I can see the large distinctive tracks from yards away.

This morning’s team is already digging gently through the sand and has uncovered eggs by the time we arrive, in order to relocate them to a safer area.

The eggs are the size of ping pong balls and as the volunteers carefully remove them from the sand I have the rare opportunity and pleasure of witnessing people and nature working together to save one of the world’s most magnificent creatures. We attract a few beach walkers and vacationers who are as thrilled as I am to be there.

Janie and our group continue on to check the rest of our section as other patrol members meticulously work through the sand to find every egg. We find a false crawl at the end of the beach but no eggs.

When we return to the nest area the team has finished digging up the eggs and is now working on preparing the new

nest where the eggs will be settled in for their incubation.

Janie takes a broken shell and readies it to be submitted for an ongoing genetic study being conducted by SC DNR Marine Turtle Conservation program in conjunction with the Georgia DNR and the North Carolina Wildlife and Resources Commission. She explains that DNA will be extracted from the membrane attached to the outside shell. This information will enable biologists to collect data and identify individual loggerhead females and use this information to begin to answer some of the questions still unanswered about the sea turtles.

Leaving the new nest in the extremely competent hands of the patrol members, Janie walks our group back to where we started, gladly answering all our questions and taking the time to ask us about ourselves. The sun is up and the turtlers are finishing up for the morning as the vacationers are coming down to the beach.

Turtlers So I started out wanting to learn about the science of sea turtles and I ended up learning about the beautiful interaction between people and turtles. Our neighbors get up in the dark, rain or shine, and willingly walk miles every day, every season, every year in search of one the most fragile of life’s components- a turtle egg. These dedicated volunteers claim no money, fame or greater reward than to see the turtle hatchlings make it to the sea. And the turtlers will happily do it all over again next season. BL

THE F-35B Military Aviation

The Future of Marine Corps Aviation Story by CINDY REID

Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort may soon be home to the future of military aviation – the F-35B Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) jet. It is called “Joint Strike Fighter” because it will be utilized by the Marine Corps, the Navy and the Air Force. The F-35B version, which is able to take off and land vertically, is what the Marine Corps will be using. According to the USMC the F-35B is the “next generation fighter and attack aircraft for the Marine Corps.”

At issue is how thirteen new F-35B squadrons will be divided between MCAS Beaufort and MCAS Cherry Point in North Carolina. There will be additional squadrons based on the west coast.

The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) released by the Navy proposes four different scenarios, “Alternatives,” as to how the new aircraft would be split between the two bases.

Under Alternative #1, MCAS Beaufort would have two pilot training squadrons and three activeduty squadrons, which means the base would be home to 88 of the new jets. MCAS Cherry Point in North Carolina would receive the other eight active duty squadrons.

The Department of Defense plans to phase out the current fighter aircraft, the F 18, within the next twelve years, making the location of the F-35 B training facility and squadrons crucial to the future of Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Beaufort and by extension, Beaufort itself. Many Beaufort business leaders and residents are in favor of Alternative #1 as it appears to the most advantageous to the base, to Beaufort and for the community.

The Deptartment of the Navy will make a final decision in December of 2010 and if Alternative #1 is approved, construction on the base would start in 2011. The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) released by the Department of the Defense states that “construction expenditures would total $351.8 million and create 4,397 jobs resulting in $188.5 million in labor income over a five year period.” In addition over 200 new civilian jobs would be created locally. The aircraft itself would arrive on base in 2014.

Community Support Over 700 people attended a public hearing held on June 22 at the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Beaufort where representatives from MCAS Beaufort, the Department of Defense and aircraft manufacturer Lockheed Martin were on hand to talk to residents about the aircraft and what the community could expect under the four alternatives proposed. There was a cockpit simulator to try out and everyone from preschoolers to great-grandparents had the opportunity to get a feel for flying what the “the World’s First Supersonic Short Takeoff/Vertical Landing Stealth Aircraft” would be like.

Residents were encouraged to voice their thoughts, ask questions and take home copies of the EIS and other literature explaining the program.

Beaufort Mayor Billy Keyserling is firmly behind the program and says, “Today, the annual economic impact of MCAS Beaufort is more than $600 million, which is to say nothing of the human resources and rich cultural diversity the military brings to Beaufort. Perhaps even more importantly,

many of us feel that by hosting the military in Beaufort, our community is contributing to a strong and vital national defense. The JSF 35-B is the aircraft of the future for Marine Corps aviation and what we know today will be phased out.

If this aircraft is not incorporated into MCAS Beaufort’s future, we could lose the base and its annual economic impact of $615 million.

This would be a huge blow to our economy. In addition to supporting Alternate #1, I strongly urge the Department of Defense to consider an Auxiliary Landing field which will mitigate noise and greatly reduce the number of flights in and out of MCAS.” According to the “Economic Impacts of the Military in Beaufort County” reported prepared by Dr. Donald L. Schunk, in 2009 MCAS Beaufort contributed $615 million to the local economy as well as the over $1 billion to the region’s economy. Beaufort County Council and six neighboring counties have all passed resolutions that support bringing the JSF 35-B to MCAS Beaufort. Q&A Evan Thompson •Questions by BRUCE DONEFF You came to Low Country in 2003 as an intern at the Historic Charleston Foundation?

I received a law degree in 2000 from the University of Texas, passed the bar, and worked a few years for my father. I then realized what I really wanted to do was focus on my true interests—history and architecture. I had a professor at University of Richmond who taught historic preservation and I told him I was interested in going into something other than law.

His former student, Jonathan Poston, was at that time Director of Preservation at the Historic Charleston Foundation. He set me up with an internship in the summer of 2003, and my parents moved to Beaufort at that time as well. After the internship, I was debating whether to go to graduate school.

I came to stay with my parents and started volunteering at that Historic Beaufort Foundation (HBF). That turned into a part-time job, which turned into a full-time job as interim director in July 2004, and then in January 2005 I became Executive Director of HBF.

A Conversation with Evan Thompson, past Director of Historic Beaufort Foundation Evan Thompson worked for the Historic Beaufort Foundation for over 6 years, ending his tenure as Executive Director. On June 1st of this year, he assumed a new position as Executive Director of the Preservation Society of Charleston. Beaufort Lifestyle visited with Evan in his new offices to get his perspective on all things historic preservation in Beaufort and in his new home, Charleston.

During a major recession, isn’t historic preservation somewhat of a luxury?

No, at a time when people aren’t building what we have are old buildings.

Evan Thompson standing On the radio the other day, I heard an economic development across the street from his officer for an upstate county office at the Preservation say that what businesses are looking for are not sites that are Society of Charleston. “shovel-ready” but sites that are “hammer-ready”. In Beaufort, we’ve seen Wren and Breakwater locate to renovated historic buildings. No one is building new buildings downtown, they’re renovating existing buildings. It’s cost-effective, they’re often in good locations, and it allows you some creativity.

If you look at the history of preservation, during economic downturns people don’t have the resources to do damage to historic buildings. Charleston has the number of historic buildings it has because people didn’t have the money in the late 19th century to demolish them and build new buildings. A major challenge we faced as historic preservation advocates in Beaufort in 2004-06 was that the scale of some of the new construction proposals were such that if they had all been built, it would have really changed the landscape of Beaufort that might not have been in keeping with its character. The recession put the brakes on a lot of that.

IF YOU DON’T LIKE WHAT’S HAPPENING, PROPOSE A BETTER WAY TO DO IT. IT’S ONE THING TO IDENTIFY A BUNCH OF PROBLEMS; IT’S ANOTHER THING TO FIND THE SOLUTION.” The recession created an opportunity?

It created breathing room. It allowed us to focus on the Northwest Quadrant. When Billy Keyserling became mayor, the city council had an interest in improving that neighborhood.

We said, let’s find a way to work with the city and work with the neighborhood to come up with a strategy to improve the neighborhood. We were able to dedicate time to it because we weren’t spending all our time creating arguments why a fivestory parking garage might not be appropriate right downtown.

So now we’re in a better position in Beaufort to deal with new construction when it comes in the Northwest Quadrant because we’ve looked at the issues and we’ve started to lay the groundwork for where that neighborhood should go.

In 2004, you took over as Interim Director at Historic Beaufort Foundation, what did you find?

An organization that had no money and a lot of debt. We had just taken on two projects that had no funding lined up: 1405 Duke St. (a cottage in the NWQ) and we’d signed a 30-year lease on the McGrath-Scheper house at 807 North St. HBF had just finished renovating the interior of the Arsenal and signed a long-term lease for that building. We also had work that needed to be done at the Verdier House.

We had a whole host of issues that took us a long time to get back on track financially. Through that process we focused on doing projects. I felt if we didn’t pursue these projects we had started then there would no reason for anybody to support us. We came out in a really strong position. At the end of our first Annual Meeting in March 2005, I said that our biggest preservation success was preserving Historic Beaufort Foundation.

Fast forward five years, what are some of your most important lessons learned?

One thing I learned is it’s not enough for any advocacy organization to just say “no” or to complain. It’s so important to be part of the solution. If you don’t like what’s happening, propose a better way to do it. It’s one thing to identify a bunch of problems; it’s another thing to find the solution.

If a preservation organization can’t find the solution to a preservation issue, then who else is out there to do it?

When you look at the vision a city has, if they don’t see preservation as an integral part of the future of the city, if they don’t see how that fits into growing the city and making it a better place to live then they’re not going to make it a priority. That’s why the NWQ project was so important because historic preservation is such an integral part of keeping the neighborhood intact as a livable place but also in shaping the direction it needs to go. So, being constructive—that’s an important thing to learn.

I also learned to be patient and take a long-term view.

It’s easy to get caught up in a project proposal that seems like the next best thing for Beaufort. As preservationists, our organization is there for the long haul and the short-term profits of a property owner or a particular business idea should not

dictate the long-term objectives of the organization. Beaufort took 299 years to get the way it is, if it takes another 10 or 15 years to fill in the NWQ, that’s all right. If the city is in a budget crunch and needs tax revenue, throwing up a bunch of buildings on the cheap in that neighborhood is not in the long-term interests of the city.

You referred to 299 years, which makes me wonder what Beaufort will celebrate for its 4th Century Project?

In Beaufort, the built environment is a nationally-significant place. There’s no place like it anywhere in the country. It has a style of architecture known as the Beaufort style. It’s not the Charleston style or Savannah style. Beaufort has its own character, architecture, style, history, and patterns of development.

Through historic preservation, the essential elements of Beaufort’s character have been preserved. As long as HBF and others can continue to nurture that, and we have property owners who invest in those buildings, then in 100 years we will be celebrating the same things we’re celebrating now. I hope we will also be celebrating new construction built last year, this year, and next year in Beaufort—that the buildings we build today are buildings we are going to want to celebrate 100 years from now. I think that’s a fundamental change in our culture that we tend to build to a purpose today and not for the long haul. A lot of new construction is very disposable and those buildings won’t be here in 100 years.

We have all these wonderful structures available in Beaufort and there is money and a lot of ideas. Does our city or county provide incentives to develop historic buildings?

We looked at this for the NWQ; there are some vacant building incentives that are not publicized very well. Part of it is driven by the individual property owner, I don’t know if people are holding out for the economy to get better and for these buildings to be bulldozed. Beaufort has a great track record with adaptive re-use. Finding new uses for old buildings is great preservation. Buildings like the Von Harten Brothers garage and the old Beaufort County Jail are two opportunities that require a vision that isn’t your traditional preservation thinking. The old Pickle Factory is another great building, it’s the only building of its kind in Beaufort.

Some see historic preservation as an elitist pursuit.

How do you get the average person to care?

One of the elitist aspects is that as a non-profit you need to seek funding from those who have the means to give it to you.

In Beaufort, preservation has been so successful in the historic district, particularly The Point and along the waterfront, and that’s where the buggies go and where tourism pushes people.

So you can get the impression that historic preservation is associated with only the oldest buildings in the town.

If you look where the historic movement came from—HBF

was chartered in 1965—preservation took off in the late 1960s.

I think it was driven by social turmoil—Vietnam, the civil rights movement. A lot of older people in these different communities felt that by focusing on preservation they were holding onto to some lost ideal. Our country was falling apart, so we needed to preserve the place where George Washington slept.

What’s happened in recent years, preservation is more interested than just the buildings associated with the elite in a community. Almost all the projects I was associated with in Beaufort were modest buildings. When HBF did its first survey of the town in 1968, the consultant said it was important to preserve places like the NWQ not because of the individual buildings, none were standouts architecturally, but rather to preserve the neighborhood, the streetscape, and the community. We need to articulate that preservation is not about the individual buildings with the most magnificent plaster work, it’s about keeping communities together, connecting people no matter who they are to their past.

You characterized historic preservation in Beaufort as “so successful”?

The objectives of the 1960s, to save antebellum buildings, were met. No one is going to try to tear down an antebellum building today, they’re too valuable, and people covet them.

Where preservation is going now, our future successes will be in places like the NWQ. Making sure vacant and abandoned buildings of a more modest character are persevered and vacant lots filled in, and that we keep neighborhoods like Woodlawn intact. That we make sure in neighborhoods like Pigeon Point we still have modestly-scaled houses, so that a whole range of people can live downtown.

During your tenure at HBF, what was your biggest disappointment?

The Edmund Rhett Law Office. That project speaks to the importance of doing research to understand how buildings evolve and what their purpose was. We identified what the office was and met with the owner. He was very agreeable to preserving the building that had been built as the law office of Edmund Rhett, one of the architects of secession. Rhett’s house is known as Secession House, but I’d like to think a lot of drafting of the legal documents and debating the merits of secession was done in that office.

That building has significance that goes beyond Beaufort, beyond the fact that it is the only antebellum office still standing in Beaufort. There isn’t anything else like it in the coastal areas that we were aware of. It was relatively intact and was lifted up in 1910 and placed atop a building that was a pharmacy.

It had been sitting on a building that was totally rotted out, but the upstairs was in relatively good shape. We were able to put it back on the ground to restore its visual appearance. In 2005, we tried to find a permanent home for it and show it off as an asset to the community. Unfortunately, the cost of land was prohibitive and we had so many other projects going on.

It was one of things that just didn’t come to fruition, and I feel responsible in that we started something we couldn’t finish.

You were chosen for you present position from a large pool of applicants—pretty big shoes to fill here?

Sure. This Preservation Society is the oldest community-

based preservation organization in the country, celebrating its 90th year. Charleston is where the preservation movement as a community-wide effort started. It’s such a great opportunity for me to be a part of this. Every day I’m inspired by something that someone else did before me. I hope I can fulfill the expectations for me.

There’s a great legacy here. In 1956, the Society started a regular newsletter, Preservation Progress, which is still published. Looking at the issues they faced in the 1950s, they were different, but in many ways they are the same. The approach they took was very “in your face,” they took some shots. Lately, some preservation organizations have a tendency to go too far in the direction of compromise. They need money or don’t want to make someone mad. You have to have respect for people that 50 years ago were out there in a position that put them somewhat at risk.

Fifty years ago, historic preservation was a very different animal?

People wanted things to be new. These were old buildings and many of them were in terrible condition. They needed to be restored and it’s not always cost effective. It took a lot of convincing in Beaufort and here in Charleston. In Charleston, it took off in the 1930s and 1940s when people realized that tourism could be a profitable industry.

There is the need to continually educate new generations about why preservation is relevant, why it’s important. I think people forget how hard it is and the battles that have been fought. There are countless examples in Beaufort and Charleston where someone had this great idea back in the 1960s that this building was going to be replaced with a new building. Preservationists fought the battle and said “no” and now that’s a building you take pictures of to send home. There are so many examples like this, yet there were many losses too.

It’s astonishing really, even in a place like Charleston where there are so many historic buildings. Anywhere you can park on King Street or Meeting Street, those parking lots were historic buildings that were torn down.

You’ve left Beaufort and now have some distance, what are your hopes for us in terms of historic preservation?

Beaufort cannot afford to lose any more historic buildings in its historic district. The city needs a movement to make sure that the vacant and abandoned buildings we have in the NWQ are at least stabilized so down the road they can be restored.

New construction will come to Beaufort, but the town needs to recognize that new construction needs to be 21st century construction and that the scale and mass and location need to be consistent but that it needs to be 21st century within the context of historic Beaufort. Beaufort is a place that has constantly changed. If you look at Bay St. it looks nothing like it did in 1720 or 1820 or even 1920. There is a whole history of change whether its fire, hurricanes or demolition. There have always been new buildings built and you can walk down the street and pick out that’s 1929, that’s 1820, that’s 1870… What’s happened is that we’re scared of 21st century architecture and a lot of the infill construction proposed is this bland imitation of something “historic.” 21st century architecture needs to be 21st century architecture. iane Britton Dunham, the well-known Gullah-inspired artist, first came to Beaufort in 1980 to visit her mother.

Diane’s mother and stepfather were snowbirds who left Ohio to travel the South in a huge Rolls-Royce recreational vehicle. They found a nest on Saint Helena Island, where they purchased six acres of land and set up a small ranch with horses and an assortment of farm animals.

Born in Ohio, Diane considered Louisiana her second home. Both of her parents lineage ran deep there, and she had traveled back and forth from her hometown in Ohio to her ancestral home in Louisiana for most of her young life. Her parents wanted her to be educated in the North, so she spent winters there, and summers in the South.

Diane graduated from Whiting Business College and also attended the Virginia Marti School of Design in Cleveland, Ohio. Right out of school she went to New York City to work in the fashion industry. She found a job in a design house as a “pin picker.” That meant she “picked up pins, swept up fabric cuttings, and cut slopers.” She didn’t particularly like it. It was the 1970’s and she didn’t fit in the Seventh Avenue world in those days she jokingly remarks: “Because I wasn’t white, gay, or Jewish.”

After her foray to Beaufort and back to Louisiana, she returned again to Beaufort in 1981. “I was divorced, so I came here to get a job and raise my son, Damon. I came on Greyhound and came to stay!” She says, “I felt like I had walked into a Tennessee Williams novel, it was so magical here. Then the town had a certain natural feel to it, like being transported back in time. You could feel the history here; spirits and ghosts of the past whispered their tales in the sea breezes and hanging moss. There was really nothing on Saint Helena then, it was all woods and dirt roads.”

At that time, her artwork was mostly contemporary African American art.

However, after her grandparents death in Louisiana, and affected by the history

of this area, she began to research her family’s genealogy. Her mother shared the family history with her, and Diane began to see the similarities between the Gullah and the Southern African cultures. “Think about all the slaves that came in through Charleston and were sent throughout the South. The Gullah culture was preserved from assimilation partly because of isolation by the lack of bridges.” Adding to her fascination about the area and its inherent culture was an article her mother had given her about the white witch doctor of Beaufort, Sheriff McTeer. “McTeer kept the law

of the physical land and the root land.”

Also mentioned in the article was the real root doctor, Dr. Buzzard, who lived and ruled from Saint Helena, and whose relatives still reside and practice there.

Since this was already an area of interest for her, it struck a chord which was evocative to her upbringing in Louisiana.

“Louisiana has hoodoo, South Carolina has root. Hoodoo, voodoo and root are all practiced in the South. The difference is that voodoo is a religion; hoodoo and root are holistic systems. They are about healing, sometimes using mojo bags and pouches to bring about spells and

to ward off evil spirits. My grandmother practiced a form hoodoo, as most did in her time, even though she was deeply religious and the daughter of a minister and a schoolteacher. For instance, she would give us haircuts on the first phase of the moon – as the moon grows, so does the hair.” These practices became habit.

“My grandmother hung a chart from the almanac on her kitchen wall that showed the body with corresponding signs of the Zodiac.” This inspired Diane’s lifelong interest in astrology. Superstition or fact, certain practices were believed in and followed. For instance, it was thought that Spanish moss placed in your shoes would reduce blood pressure. “As Africans, we did these things to take care of ourselves.

We planted and harvested according to the moon’s phases; we used roots for medicinal purposes. My mother’s life was saved from a serious case of the measles as a child by a tea made out of cow dung.” Not all root practices were beneficial, some roots were used to cast dark spells. Actually, some were used as poison, perhaps slipped into a drink, or ground up into food. Some thought it paid to be wary, for instance if you tried to trap a man and he cast a counter-spell, “He could have you walking backwards, clucking like a chicken. My mother never really believed in the occult factor, but she did believe that a person could be poisoned.” Diane recalls “When I attended a public event, I would never put my drink down; I carried it with me so nothing could be slipped into it while I wasn’t looking.”

“As a divorcee with a child to take care of, I was a creative hustler. In addition to my job as director of revenue and billing for a medical facility, and selling paintings, I made perfumes, ink pens, candles, and soaps into which I incorporated certain ingredients thought to help people. It was just for fun and some people bought lots of my perfumes!”

Since she was conversant in this area, people would come to her for help in attracting a partner, or trying to get rid of one.

“A friend came to me and asked, ‘How do I get rid of this guy?’ I told her to put salt on the stove and when he left her house she should use the broom and sweep, sweep, sweep it away. Just like she wanted to sweep him out of her life.”

These practices are subtly illustrated in

some of her paintings.

“I started painting the history of our people in honor and awe. I employ empathy – I try to imagine myself as an artist who is forbidden to create. I feel like I owe it to my culture because historically African Americans were not able to create art. The slave owners didn’t allow it. Yet there were such great craftsmen in those days: silversmiths, blacksmiths, quilters, and basket weavers. They took pride in their craftsmanship and poured all of their creative energy into it. I learned a great appreciation for our history and culture.”

“Saint Helena Island was very rural in the late1970’s – 80’s. The roads were dirt; the sounds of chickens and cows provided background music and each evening my mother, father and some of the neighbors would go horseback riding down the dirt roads. Women still carried their goods on their heads. But then the tourists started coming and wanted to photograph these people. It made them feel awkward, like objects of attention, so they stopped doing it. It was easy to transport myself back into time and visualize the images I would come to paint. Some of my favorite memories are the times I spent with my mother taking long walks in the woods as she would tell me stories of her life growing up in the country. She would point out different indigenous plants and herbs and explain to me the medicinal uses they had. It was easy to imagine her and her sister frolicking against the lush wooded backdrop of Saint Helena Island, which was so much like the place in which she grew up. There are so many similarities here between the marshes here and the bayous of Louisiana.”

In the 1970’s Joe Pinckney was the first Gullah artist from this area to become well known. Jonathan Green, Brenda Singleton, and Diane were close on his heels. It is mistakenly assumed that the faceless paintings are attributed to the Gullah style of art, when in fact they were prevalent as early as the 1950’s, and were used elsewhere in the country by such well-known African American artists such as Varnette P. Honeywood, Ellis Wilson, and Synthia St. James.

There is a clear connection between oral health and overall health status of the human body.

The oral cavity is normally teeming with bacteria. Usually, you can keep these bacteria under control with good oral health care, such as daily brushing and flossing. In addition, saliva is a key defense against bacteria and viruses, it contains enzymes that destroy bacteria in different ways. But in poor oral health, these harmful bacteria can sometimes grow out of control and lead to periodontitis, a serious gum infection or advanced decay and nerve death leading to severe pain and or tooth loss.

When your gums and teeth are healthy, bacteria in your mouth usually don’t enter your bloodstream. However, as previously mentioned, gum disease and tooth decay may provide bacteria a port of entry into your bloodstream. Medications, treatments or aging that reduce saliva flow disrupt the normal balance of bacteria in your mouth also may lead to oral changes, making it easier for bacteria to enter your bloodstream.

Many researchers agree that these bacteria and inflammation from your mouth are linked to other health problems in the rest of your body.

Here are some diseases and conditions to consider that may be linked to oral health: • Cardiovascular disease. Research shows that several types of cardiovascular disease may be linked to oral health. These include heart disease, clogged arteries and stroke. In some research periodontal disease seems to be closely associated with heart disease, however more studies are needed before the link can be confirmed with certainty.

• Pregnancy and birth. Gum disease has been linked to premature birth. This is why it’s vital to maintain excellent oral health before you get pregnant and during your pregnancy.

• Diabetes. Diabetes increases your risk of gum disease, cavities, tooth loss, dry mouth and a variety of oral infections.

Conversely, poor oral health can make your diabetes more difficult to control. Oral infections may cause your blood sugar to rise and require more insulin to keep it under control.

• Osteoporosis. The first stages of bone loss may show up in your teeth. Systemic loss of bone density in osteoporosis, including bone in the jaw, may create a condition where the

bone supporting your teeth is increasingly susceptible to infectious destruction. Your dentist may be able to spot this on a routine clinical examination or with dental X-rays. If bone loss worsens, your dentist can suggest that you discuss the issue with your other health care providers.

• Other conditions. Many other conditions may make their presence known in your mouth before you know anything is wrong. These may include Sjogren’s syndrome, certain cancers, eating disorders, syphilis, gonorrhea and substance abuse.

A Downtown Hospice Care of the Lowcountry Kicks Off Community Health Education Seminars Open to the Public

We’re very excited at Hospice Care of the Lowcountry this month to announce the “kick-off” of our Community Health Education Seminars. These seminars are free to the public and will encompass health-related topics including Advance Directives, Alzheimer’s and Senior Wellness among others.

Hospice Care of the Lowcountry has been the community’s resource on Palliative and Hospice Care since 1982. As many already know, all our nurses have earned the highest certification available in hospice and palliative care. We made the decision to certify our nurses because we understand the importance of staying fully current on medical practices is imperative in our ever-changing industry.

Tarpon hitting from Whale Branch to Bay Point

T

his begins one of the best times of the year for fishing the Low Country. August is still hot and the tarpon bite has moved all over Beaufort County. The mullet have grown now so you are able to find 8-inch mullet almost anywhere you look. So can the tarpon, and there is nothing better for a tarpon to find than a big mullet away from it’s school. I seem to have the best luck this way even if it is early July or August.

This month you will find tarpon from Whale Branch to Bay Point. Some of the bigger schools of fish have found their way inland to structure and deep holes that are around docks and points right around where we live. Having good fresh bait is the key here. Don’t go to your hole without a nice live well full of mullet or menhaden. Even if it takes you over an hour to get it, it’s that important, don’t leave without it. For you guys with a fly rod this is one of the ultimate fish to catch. We have some large fish around here, 80 to 120 pounds are normal so you will need at least a 10# or 12# rod.

Big deceiver patterns that imitate a menhaden or herring seem to work the best.

We also have some nice flounder laying around our inlets this time of year. Most seem to be off the beaches or sandbars and will take a finger mullet well. As we were saying the mullet have grown and some times it will be hard to find a finger mullet this time of year.

In that case a mud minnow is good, sometimes better. I have seen a 16-inch flounder eat a 8-inch mullet. In the fish world flounder seem to have a bit of an attitude.

Near shore we have some great wrecks and artificial reefs. Any of them will produce nice sea bass, an occasional cobia, and one of my favorite fighters is the spade fish. A lot of us overlook these guys but what a fight they will produce.

It’s like catching a 12-pound bream. The main ingredient is jelly balls for bait.

Here is another instance where you don’t go out there without them. You will need a net with about a 6-foot handle. Troll

around the mouth of the sound (either one, Port Royal or St. Helena) and look for what looks to be jellyfish without tentacles. These jelly balls will not sting you, although they will leave a sensation on your hands and don’t rub your eyes.

You can find spade fish directly over the wreck or structure. You slice the jelly balls into strips of bait and the fun begins.

After Labor Day it seems to begin our inshore fall season. The month of September starts the water cooling back down. Bait is plentiful this month, especially shrimp. Everything in the water eats shrimp, even shrimp. Trout and redfish come into our creeks on a much larger scale this month and continue into the fall. Don’t miss this opportunity to catch some of the Low Country’s finest fishing. We are blessed to have some of the biggest redfish anywhere, they really have some shoulders on them. I use a medium light rod and sometimes they win, but it sure is fun during the fight. Try live shrimp on a cork or on the bottom if there are no shells. This will generally find these fish.

Our offshore waters are a lot of fun

as well during September. I have caught more sailfish off Edisto during September than any other month. The kingfish are also easy to find now. Trolling about 7 knots in about 120 feet of water over live bottom will produce these and also dolphin (mahi-mahi) which are my favorite fish to grill. While offshore, don’t forget about those hungry grouper.

I like to take some live bait or frozen cigar minnows with me to drop down for these guys, nothing like a grilled grouper sandwich. We have something for everyone and all types of fishing available during the fall season in the Low Country.

Book a local charter captain and find out for yourself how much fun this season can be. Half day inshore charters start at about $350 and near shore charters start at about $450. Trolling goes up from there depending on the boat and where you go. It will be worth the time and effort.

Gary Sinise & the LT. Dan Band to play at 16th Annual Beaufort Shrimp Festival The 16th Annual Beaufort Shrimp Festival will be Friday, October 1 and Saturday, October 2 at Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park in downtown Beaufort. This popular event brings thousands of residents and visitors alike to celebrate local wild-caught shrimp, great music and local restaurants.

Partnering with the South Carolina Shrimper’s Association, Main Street Beaufort (the event organizer) is diligently working to execute another successful event. Restaurants including Plums, Southern Graces, Gilligan’s of Beaufort, Sea Eagle Market & Catering, Barbara Jeans, Bricks on Boundary, Emily’s, and many more will be competing for the coveted Silver Cup Award as well as Best Shrimp Dish, Best Presentation, Best Booth Decoration, and People’s Choice. Restaurants are required to use fresh, local, wild caught shrimp. Other activities that make this event a success are the popular shrimp heading competition and children’s shrimp peeling competition.

Last year’s inaugural Rubber Shrimp Race, organized by Sea Island Rotary Club of Beaufort, will return this year as well. A children’s area, craft market, and live entertainment will round out the weekend. Admission into the park is free. Food and drink tickets are sold for $1 each. Food booths sell food items from two to seven tickets, soft drinks and water are two tickets, beer three tickets, and wine five tickets.

This year, Main Street Beaufort has welcomed another partner, Independence Fund, who is organizing the Lt. Dan Weekend.

The week of the festival, Independence Fund is bringing over 80 wounded combat war veterans and their caregivers to Beaufort for seminars and activities throughout Beaufort. The Beaufort community is happy to host these heroes who have sacrificed so much for our freedom. Gary Sinise of Forrest Gump and CSI: NY, is an avid supporter of the military and wounded combat veterans.

2010 Lands End Woodland River Festival - September 3rd & 4th Beginning, Friday, September 3rd at 5:00, there will be a good ole fashioned fish-fry featuring local entertainment. On Saturday, September 4th from at 11 a.m. until 7 p.m., an all day festival of singers, dancers, musicians and storytellers will entertain visitors. There will be craft vendors and food vendors offering a variety of hand-made crafts and delicious Lowcountry cuisine. The event is free and open to the public. Parking Fees: Cars - $3.00, Vans - $10.00 and Buses - $15.00. Bands Brews & BBQ Announcing Bands Brews & BBQ a South Carolina Barbeque Association sanctioned Cook-Off event hosted by Beaufort Town Center and sponsored by Griffith, Sadler & Sharp, PA and Kinghorn Insurance Agency of Beaufort. Bands, Brews & BBQ will take place on Friday, Sep. 3 and Saturday, Sept.4th. Proceeds to benefit FRIENDS of Caroline HOSPICE. This event will feature an “Anything But Pork” Party on Friday September 3rd from 6pm until 9 p.m. The Saturday event will include a sanctioned SC BBQ Association cook off in the categories of Ribs & Butts as well as live music from four local bands and entertainment for the children.

Sinise and his 13 pc. Lt. Dan Band will perform a free concert at Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park in conjunction with The Beaufort Shrimp Festival. How suiting that Lt. Dan comes back to Beaufort to perform the Beaufort Shrimp Festival. Restaurants will be selling shrimp dishes and more to satisfy your shrimp cravings through Saturday.

Saturday morning kicks off with the annual 5K shrimp run, walk through history, and popcorn shrimp run for the kids in downtown Beaufort. The Lt. Dan Ride will take place on Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort with a bicycle ride with the veterans. Participation fees are from 10 to 30 dollars.

Proceeds from the run, walk, and bike ride will go to Independence Fund to support their efforts with the veterans.

The rubber shrimp race will follow the 5K with activities following at 11 a.m. Competitions, children’s area, craft market, and live entertainment by The East Coast Party Band until 5 p.m. As one of the area’s most popular festivals, this year’s Beaufort Shrimp Festival is sure to be a wonderful family friendly event.

grew to showcase some of the most successful Gullah/Folk artists in the region. Originally, her fashion illustrations were painted in watercolor, so when she began painting, she used watercolor before she switched to using mostly acrylics. “I use vibrant colors in my art, both as a result of my fashion design training, and also because of major influences such as Henri Paul Gauguin. I feel the combination of my African and Native American heritages is inherent on a subliminal level in influencing the colors used in my art.� The clothing in her paintings is feminine, colorful and beautiful, again a reference to her fashion sense. Some of her paintings have faces, some don’t.

Sometimes when you see a painting of hers, it will have a face, then she might take it back to the studio and rework it and it will re-emerge without a face, or visa versa. “It depends on what the characters say to me.� Instead of the often seen flat black complexions several artists use, the people in Diane’s paintings have all different shades of complexions; “We have a beautiful range of complexions and undertones, and I love to explore that range.�

In addition, Diane uses “lots of symbolism� in her art. “There is something going on in plain sight that many people don’t see or recognize.� For instance, one painting has a doll with different colored socks. This is another reference to her grandmother’s influence. The different colored socks were worn to confuse the evil spirits. Another, entitled Hope in a Polka Dot Bag, has two little girls, one in a black dress to signify depression - night, another in a white dress signifying happiness - day. The girl in the black dress is clutching a polka dot bag given to her by her friend, a mojo bag, filled with hope.

Attracted to such symbolism used throughout her culture,

Diane did a series of eight quilt paintings, which represented the quilts used as codes for the Underground Railroad, to help the slaves escape to the North. Again, “hidden in plain sight, the quilts were hung on clotheslines, over fences, in windows. They were used like billboards on how to escape.� In her paintings, people are doing every day things around the quilts, hanging them on the line, in windows, draped over an arm, just as they were in history.

In the early 1990’s Diane and her friend, Arianne King-Comer, the celebrated indigo-dye and batik artist, started creating their own venues for selling their art. At that time the only show for Black art was during the original Gullah Festival held annually in May, and at The Red Piano Too Art Gallery. Diane and Arianne collaborated and gathered together other artists to increase their exposure to African American art in this area throughout the year; this eventually evolved to the artist group “Omo Isonas.

The Omo Isonas group expanded to incubate not only the now well-known Black artists in the area, but others as well.�

Since those days, Diane has produced over one thousand paintings and still counting. Her subject matter is primarily women, although ten to fifteen percent of the paintings do include men. And these are now collected, and shown, all over the country. She married her husband, the talented and softspoken musician Phil Griffin, in 1997. She left Saint Helena and moved to Burton to Phil’s sixty-two acres of family land where she also loves the beauty and nature. However, she still thinks back fondly to the days when she wandered on Saint Helena’s dirt roads with her mom and baby boy, in her bare feet, tracing the steps of her ancestral culture and the awe of feeling the spirits of those who inspired her work. Owner and chef, Chris Mixson, is authentically from the Lowcountry. He grew up in Ridgeland, SC, in the late 1970’s; Chris was “part of that last generation of kids being real kids. We’d get on our bikes in the morning and our moms just said ‘Be home before dark.’ I had a glorious childhood in a really safe environment.”

Chris attended the Thomas Heyward Academy in Ridgeland; married his high school sweetheart, Christy; and went to work in the electrical contracting business in 1986.

Eventually he owned his own such business on Hilton Head Island, but one day in 2006 he had an epiphany. “One morning I was malingering at the house on my way to work and decided to watch a DVD of the ‘Masters Guide to Extraordinary Barbeque Cookin’. I started dreaming, fantasizing about what it would be like to cook for a living. I’m a bit of a gambler, somewhat compulsive. I said to myself – this is what I’m going to do. I set out to find a commercial wood-burning barbeque smoker rig; told my wife ‘I’m going to be a barbeque caterer;’

“I spent a lot of time with my grandmother when I was young. She always loved to cook and I always loved to help her in the kitchen. Cooking touches people deeply like no other thing can. I grew up on rice and gravy; it was a favorite snack food. That combination of fat and starch is so very satisfying: rice and gravy, chicken and dumplings. As a child I loved to hunt, catch shrimp, gig for flounder, garden, and cook!” *OLD-FASHIONED MAC N’CHEESE: like my grandmother’s with a dash of red pepper flakes.

“Since my first business card which read: ‘Barbeque and Lowcountry Cooking,’ my menu has evolved. I converted my garage into a cooking chamber. As soon as those cards were printed, I got a job for an oyster roast for two hundred and fifty people. I took the deposit and bought oyster steamers, built eight oyster tables, corralled my son and his friend, and went.

It was a huge success. Before long I bought chafing trays (at first I didn’t even know they held water in the tray underneath), and a two-burner propane stove. A real turning point was when Chris became friends with Steve Brown, a Beaufort caterer. “He took me under his wing. It was the first time I was in a real commercial kitchen as a cook. He provided guidance, nurtured me, taught me, and was unbelievably generous.”

Chris also admired Paula Deen in Savannah. “Her recipes were reliable and her food was good.” Chris met Paula’s sons,

Tony took Chris in, and invited him to work in his restaurant. So Chris commuted back and forth to Nashville to learn another style of barbeque preparation. “There are three wellknown distinctive styles of barbeque: Texas, Memphis, and North Carolina. Texas style is sliced beef and sausage with no sauce, it isn’t even served with sauce.

“My mission is to give South Carolina barbeque an identity comparable to the others.

South Carolina barbeque is pulled pork, which is not pre-sauced but served with red tomato based sauce, or the traditional yellow mustard based sauce on the side. Pork is the choice meat for barbeque because it has fat, which starts rendering during the long cooking hours and is what makes it flavorful and tender.

The true definition of barbeque is meat that is cooked slowly with the use of smoke. South Carolina barbeque is not yet branded. Memphis is the barbeque capitol of the world. I am not the only guy who knows how to cook barbeque in the state, but few know to not put the sauce in ahead of time. We pull the pork off the bone at the time the sandwich is ordered in our restaurant; it is not already made up in a batch. We serve our barbeque with three sauces but it should be able to stand alone and not require sauce to be complete. It’s our rub that gives it that extraordinary flavor.”

Popular Wedding Traditions: Origins And Legends

Many of our modern wedding traditions have their origin in times past. Here’s a sampling.

The Bridal Shower tradition has its roots in the 1800’s. The story is told of a poor miller who fell in love with a wealthy maiden. But, the father of the maiden was against the marriage.

He refused to provide a dowry for her, and a bride could not marry without a dowry. The story goes that the bride had generous friends who “showered” her with so many gifts they could forego the missing dowry.

Why “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue?” The “old” was usually a personal gift from mother to daughter, a symbolic piece of wisdom for married life. The “new” symbolized the new family being formed by the marriage. “Borrowing” is especially important since it is to come from a happily married woman, thereby lending the bride some of her own marital bliss. “Blue” has two traditions, ancient Roman maidens wore blue on the borders of their robes to denote love, fidelity and modesty, while Christians associate it with the purity of the Virgin Mary.

In very early days, fathers would offer daughters as peace offerings to warring tribes. Because of the hostility, the families were placed on opposite sides of the church so the ceremony could proceed without bloodshed. The ceremony united the two warring factions into one family, and the danger was resolved.

Today, family members still sit on opposite sides.

Because the early Anglo Saxon groom often had to defend his bride from would-be kidnappers, she stood to his left, leaving his sword-arm free just in case. The “best” warrior in the tribe stood by the groom and was responsible for helping defend the bride, should the need arise. Thus we have the placement for the best man.

Ever wonder where the phrase “tie the knot” comes from?

Supposedly this also goes back to early Roman times. The bride would wear a girdle that was tied in many knots, which the groom had the “duty” to untie. As a side note, this can also refer to the tying of the knot in Handfasting Ceremonies, which were usually done without the benefit of clergy.

In early times the bride had to be carried over the threshold because she was (or was pretending to be) reluctant to enter the bridal chamber. In those days, it was considered ladylike to be hesitant at this point. Another legend has it that the bride was carried over the threshold to protect her from any evil spirits which might be lingering there.

The term “Honeymoon” also originated centuries ago. It was the custom for couples to get married beneath a full moon. Then they would drink honey wine for thirty days in a row, to foster good luck. This created the term honeymoon.

The wedding cake originated from the ancient custom where a loaf of wheat bread was broken over the bride’s head to symbolize hope for a fertile and fulfilling life. The guests ate the crumbs which were believed to offer good luck.

Loud noises were said to drive away evil spirits, and during the ceremony the guests would make noises to keep the evil away. Today, it’s traditional that the bridal party honk their car horns and drag rattling tin cans while leaving the ceremony.

Once you become engaged, the question you’ll hear most often will be “when’s the big day?” Like Christmas and birthdays, your wedding date will hold a special place in your heart, year after year.

The first question to ask yourself is how much time do I need to plan the wedding? Be realistic, a large, formal wedding could easily require a full year of planning. Wedding consultants report approximately 200 hours are needed to plan an average wedding. Spread over a year, those hours can be easily managed; however, spread them over three months, and the result will be serious stress and exhaustion. On the other hand, a small, less formal affair could be smoothly planned within four to six months.

In selecting your month, ask yourself: What season do I prefer? Or does the season matter? Is there one time of year your family or the groom’s family would find particularly meaningful? Perhaps Christmas has always been special to you, so an early December wedding would fulfill your dreams. As an added benefit, seasonal weddings such as Valentines Day or Halloween can simplify decorating decisions.

Experts say the most popular wedding months continue to be June, August and September.

Should you choose a holiday weekend? On the plus side, your guests may appreciate a wedding on a long weekend, since it

Selecting A Wedding Date And Time

gives them an extra day for travel time and recuperation. On the other hand, some family members may already have other plans for those special weekends. Again, you face a trade-off.

To cut down on conflicts, plan around major events in your area and significant events in your family. You don’t want to worry about your cousin’s college graduation falling on the same weekend as your wedding. Check with the local convention & visitors bureau to make certain no big conventions will be in town on your date, taking up all the hotel and banquet space.

If you can’t avoid a busy weekend, lock-in your hotel rooms as early as possible.

Be sure to take weather into consideration. Many a bride has planned an outdoor summer wedding in chilly January, forgetting to take into account that July weather can be unbearably muggy and 95 degrees. I still marvel at photos of myself, a bridesmaid at an August wedding, with sweat running down my face and wet hair sticking to my forehead - not a pretty picture. Likewise, in some parts of the country, a wedding in January could be hindered by eight inches of snow on the roads.

Wedding and reception times do matter, especially when it comes to feeding your guests. In times past, ceremonies were often held in the morning and guests sat down to a wedding brunch afterward. Morning weddings are much less common now. For example, a 2 p.m. wedding is an appropriate time if you’re planning to serve only punch and cake. But a later wedding, such as 4 p.m. or after usually means the guests expect substantial food. By now you must be thinking...how can we ever settle on a date, but take heart! You will find a workable day to exchange vows and with a dash of deliberation all your family and friends will be on hand to share your joy.

Where do you get those? What about the transportation, the timelines, the menus? Who will set everything up and make sure I get what I’ve paid for?”

Hyperventilation sets in. And then you hire a wedding planner.

“Ah!” Sigh of relief.

For many, the initial thought of planning a wedding sounds like fun, but for others it is horrifying. For both types, it can become overwhelming and send some headed for the hills.

Almost every little girl dreams of the day when she can be princess and marry her prince charming. But all too often, this fairy tale ending doesn’t happen without a real Cinderella story first. You remember her clothes torn to rags, she was left crying on the floor, with no way to get to the ball.

A professional event planner’s work is considered stressful and energizing. This line of work is also considered fast paced and demanding. Planners deal with a lot of organization aspects.

What will an event planner do for you ?

An event planner will handle budgeting, logistics, establishing dates, selecting and reserving the event site, acquiring “License” permits, coordinating transportation and parking, developing a décor scheme for the event, coordinating location support (such as electricity and other utilities), arranging tables, chairs, tents, event support and catering, beverage service, portable and/or luxury restrooms, parking, emergency plans, and cleanup. He or she also acts as your insurance during mishaps and/or problems.

The event planner is equipped with knowledge to handle unexpected situations.

Is an event planner expensive?

Many assume that hiring an event planner is costly and only meant for those planning weddings and/or events of great scale.

Not true. Hiring an event planner can be beneficial for events of all sizes and scales. Although some event planners have a budget minimum, there are many who do not. Planning a wedding and/ or event can become like a full time job for the individual planning or hosting the event. Hiring a planner saves you time, money and stress. A good planner will have many resources to pull from, and will also have working relationships with the best vendors.

Planners also tailor their cost according to the client’s budget and help them to stay within their budget.

There are many different names for an event planner, such as a wedding/event coordinator, a party planner, or a wedding consultant. However you say it, hiring an event planner is one decision you can make during the planning process that you will never regret.
