Why shop local?

Shop local because your dollar supports a dream and makes a bigger impact in your hometown than it does online.

When you buy local, you’re getting to know your neighbors and offering support for a business that was once a dream. Their children participate with yours in activities like dance classes, sports teams, church groups and music lessons—all funded by people who believed in their family’s dream.

This keeps the wheel turning for other small businesses who are able to keep their doors open with local support.

Shopping local also offers concrete benefits. It keeps your sales tax in your community, funding the infrastructure to build better roads, public safety, and schools, all of which are essential as Effingham County continues to grow. For every dollar you spend at a locally owned business, 68 percent stays in the community. When you buy from a big box store? Only 43 percent.

When local business thrives, the whole community becomes a destination. It becomes a draw for other family-owned businesses to put down roots and go for their dreams. It attracts out-of-town visitors to visit, and perhaps become our neighbors. Local businesses are the secret sauce that make a community unique.

So keep the dream alive: shop local this holiday season! Not sure where to start? Consult our advertisers’ directory on page 57.

I will be the first to admit, I love conveniences. The ease of realizing I need to buy more dog treats, opening up an app on my phone and click!…dog treats ordered. But as tempting as it is to buy online, there are so many great reasons to shop and buy local.

In my years as publisher of Effingham Magazine, I can tell you that local business makes for better stories than the expansive warehouses of big box stores because of the people behind them. Effingham County is full of great stories about businesses supporting our community and working together during difficult times.

In this issue, we highlight so many fantastic local businesses that are providing unique products and exceptional service to the residents and visitors to Effingham.

We also learned about the resources offered by 16 branches of Live Oak Public Libraries. For example, did you know that anyone with a library card can check out Chromebooks and Wi-Fi hotspots, free of charge? By providing access to technology and resources, the library is setting up the next generation of entrepreneurs for success.

Melissa McBride Stille Works for Clients—Not the Insurance Company!

Are you turning 65 and thinking about retirement and don’t know what to do? “Many people are trying to decide if they should retire and how that would impact their health insurance.” says independent insurance agent Melissa McBride Stille, “If someone is 65 years old and wants to stop working, knowing their health care options ahead of that decision is crucial because there are far reaching consequences.”

Melissa has been in the health insurance industry for 14 years and is the sole proprietor of Stille-DeWitt Health Brokerage. She says, “DeWitt Insurance Agency has been in business since 1956. When I purchased the agency’s health department, I incorporated it into my agency name to keep the continuity within the community.” As a health insurance broker specializing in Medicare, she is dedicated to presenting her clients with the best health care options available.

She says at age 65 most people need to think about the pros and cons of Medicare options or continuing insurance through their employer. Don’t stress over the paperwork she says, “All you need is to bring me is yourself and your current group benefits. Don’t depend on your Human Resources department to help you because they are not insurance specialists. We can do a three way call between yourself, your HR dept and me so I can thoroughly assess your situation. Together we will optimize your benefits while tailoring them to your needs.”

Melissa can also facilitate your Medicare application with the Social Security office. “There are many factors, particularly with Medicare Part B.” Some scenarios involve penalties but they may not apply to you, that’s why working with a Medicare specialist is critical to obtaining the best outcome.

Each client presents individual issues. You may have a spouse who is dependent on your benefits and too young for Medicare. Melissa will help you compare the cost of staying at your current position and using your employer benefits plan, versus retiring and having your spouse obtain health insurance through the marketplace. Perhaps your spouse has a chronic illness or is in an assisted living facility—these are important factors in your decision.

Melissa also works with Medicare recipients under 65, including those who have Medicare through Social Security Disability and with people using Affordable Care Act Marketplace insurance, and some group insurances.

“I care about each and every client and do a review of everyone’s health policies every year because there are so many changes annually,” she says. “I like to simplify things and present you with your best options.” She gives every client her cell number—it’s in all of her advertising so that every client, even future clients, can feel comfortable reaching out to her. She says, “I work for my clients, not the insurance company.”

Taking a Stand in the Fight Against Human Trafficking

WILLIAM “BILL” GETTIS
10 December/January 2022 | www.EFFINGHAMMAGAZINE.com

ill Gettis, Chairman of the Savannah Interagency Diversity Council (SIDC)—along with the entire SIDC organization and its Trafficking Planning Committee—have taken a phenomenal stand against human trafficking, gaining worldwide attention due to the Traffick Jam event, which is at the heart of the organization.

Founded in May 2013, the SIDC is composed of members representing various federal, state and local government agencies, along with non-profits, private companies and public universities.

The organization’s mission has been to: “appreciate social diversity in Savannah and promote understanding, tolerance and inclusion of all residents.” It strives to implement community projects and programs that will support those objectives.

“We want to be a positive light, getting people to become more involved in their community,” Bill says.

The SIDC implemented its Trafficking Planning Committee in 2016 to focus on the overall Traffick Jam initiative. It is committed to promoting awareness about the evil of human trafficking in order to bring it to an end while offering hope to victims whose very humanity and lives have been undermined and violated.

“We have a great committee that works well together,” Bill says.

Career of Character

Bill, a Mississippi native, is a career professional in the field of law enforcement and justice. In 1986, he obtained a position in Texas as an intern for the U.S. Department of Defense; afterward, he worked for the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Command in Michigan. He later became director of logistics for the 24th Infantry Division in Ft. Stewart.

Over time, Bill accepted a position with the U.S. Department of Justice as an Immigration and Naturalization Service inspector. Since June 2000, Bill has been an industry operations investigator for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), helping to keep this country safe by ensuring that each commercial and private dealer operates within the parameters of federal law.

A Humbling Honor

On August 18, Bill received the ATF organization’s James E. Little Award in Washington, D.C. following a scrupulous selection process. He was one of few

individuals around the country selected for the award after demonstrating a tremendous “concern for people” through unparalleled humanitarianism, social advocacy and community service.

“I’m representing the ATF as someone in the community involved in the fight against human trafficking—an atrocity to humanity. It really was enriching and enlightening. It made me feel that what I’m doing in the community makes a

Moreover, Savannah has one of the largest ports in the country. Stowaways have often migrated to this country via container ship after being deceitfully promised opportunities of a better life. Instead, they are frequently ensnared in a web of involuntary prostitution, a form of sex trafficking. Further, some individuals have fallen prey to the sinister act through kidnapping. In most cases, sex traffickers exploit young women and girls, some as young as 12 years old.

difference,” he comments.

Bill felt humbled that his tireless fight against human trafficking, along with the success of the Savannah Traffick Jam, had been noticed by the ATF.

“It is an ATF award, but the award is for the whole SIDC organization. I have it because of their hard work,” he remarks.

Ending Human Trafficking

With a career dedicated to promoting justice, Bill is passionate about bringing an end to human trafficking. He knows that it starts with community awareness.

“We want to provide awareness. A lot of people think that trafficking only goes on in big cities, but it is happening here,” he says.

The City of Savannah is one of the top tourist destinations in the nation while also hosting famed international events. For instance, the St. Patrick’s Day celebration ushers in countless individuals each year, some with malicious intentions.

“It’s easy for a trafficker to come here and blend in,” Bill says.

Traffickers characteristically target people who they feel are easily “pulled into their web,” including individuals they observe to be underprivileged or others they believe to be desperate and alone.

The massive growth of the local area is driving law enforcement officers to ensure that communities are not flooded with trafficking predators. Nonetheless, caring and conscientious residents make all the difference.

“Be more aware. If something doesn’t look right, go with your gut feeling. It can turn out to be nothing at all, or it can be something—someone can be involved in a trafficking situation,” Bill says.

Sincerest Regard

Bill has tremendous gratitude for the SIDC and its Trafficking Planning Committee for their persistence, diligence and commitment.

He, too, appreciates the efforts of Savannah Mayor Van Johnson, who has been supportive of the organization.

“The mayor takes on a big role in assisting us and getting other elected officials involved. It’s good to have his support,” Bill says.

The accomplished humanitarian is

What is Human Trafficking?

Human trafficking, also known as trafficking in persons or modern-day slavery, is a crime that involves compelling or coercing a person to provide labor or services, or to engage in commercial sex acts. The coercion can be subtle or overt, physical or psychological.

“Her love and support have been unwavering and strong through my ups and downs. She has supported me greatly while I have been leading this organization and during all my time working within the government [sector],” he says.

Bill is grateful for two of his biggest role models: his dad William and his mom Nellie, who passed away on September 5.

“We have some great speakers; they’re top-notch,” SIDC Chairman Bill Gettis says.

People are becoming more aware, but we still have a long way to go. It’s a huge undertaking, but we’re up for the challenge

The Savannah Interagency Diversity Council (SIDC) will host the 8th Annual Savannah Traffick Jam on Friday, January 27, 2023, and Saturday, January 28, 2023, at Savannah State University (SSU), as January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month. Each year, millions of people around the world are bought and sold into forced labor or sexual servitude. The horrible injustice does not discriminate, targeting nearly any demographic.

The Traffick Jam event represents a

Sex trafficking has been the focus of several previous Traffick Jam events. However, the 2023 theme is labor trafficking, as many individuals have fallen victim to it over the years, some forced to work without pay; others are coerced to work for despicably low wages or in inhumane conditions.

A labor trafficking survivor will recall their personal experience with the distressing offense. Other speakers include: Dr. Kate Perry, a Georgia

Bill Gettis, alongside the SIDC, are taking a relentless stand in the fight against human trafficking.

Santa’s mischievous helper, Buddy the State Farm Elf on a Shelf, is right here in Effingham County. Santa’s elves are pure Christmas Magic that capture our imagination and fire up our holiday spirit. Brad Cherney, of Brad Cherney State Farm Insurance, says, “Buddy the State Farm Elf is our resident Elf on a Shelf, and he is a bit of a rascal. With a heart full of Christmas joy, he likes to make a little mischief in the businesses in our area all through the month of December.”

This is Buddy’s second year at State Farm but like all elves he is ageless. This year Buddy did get a makeover with a brand-new State Farm logo look and he has some new tricks up his sleeve. Hint— one may involve a remote controlled Elf mobile! “He is a perpetual surprise to me and my staff,” says Brad.

A little about Elves on Shelves...

On December 1, Santa’s little helpers leave the North Pole and head out to where they’ll be staying for the holiday season. In Buddy’s case, that is at the Brad Cherney State Farm Insurance office in Springfield, GA.

During the month of December elves pop up in places around town, watching to see who is naughty and nice and occasionally stirring up a little holiday fun.

The night before Christmas, Buddy’s job comes to an end. He and the other elves fly back to the North Pole following Santa’s sleigh, where they will stay at Santa’s workshop until the next Christmas season.

Rules for Buddy the State Farm Elf

1. No one can touch Buddy the Elf.

2. Buddy does not move nor speak during the day.

3. Buddy reports back to Santa every night to let Santa know who was naughty or nice that day.

4. Be Christmas Kind.

Who Can Touch an Elf on the Shelf?

Santa advises that no one touches any Elf on the Shelf, but he does describe a few rare instances when an adult may use tongs or potholders to help an elf in an urgent situation.

What if Someone Touches an Elf on the Shelf? Or if He Falls off the Shelf?

There are several options.

1. Sprinkle him with cinnamon

because it has magical Christmas powers.

2. Write a Letter to Santa and apologize for touching the Elf.

3. Pop him into the freezer a bit, it’s as refreshing as the North Pole.

Does Buddy Move to a New Location Every Day?

It’s tradition for Buddy to magically move most days because he needs to see as many people as possible so he can report back to Santa on the naughty and nice list. He may stay over a day or two, but because he is a playful prankster, he usually is on the move every day! Brad says Buddy really enjoys seeing and being seen. “Buddy can be anywhere on any given day. He could be at a candle shop or at a café- you simply never know!” Look for Buddy at retail stores, shopping centers and other local businesses.

Buddy’s Likes

1. Sparkly lights

2. Gingerbread

3. Safe Drivers

Buddy’s Dislikes

1. Grinches

If your business would like a Buddy visit, give Brad a call and he will see what he can do. “I don’t make any promises, because Buddy has a mind of his own, but I can make suggestions.”he

says. “A promise of a Christmas cookie or candy cane certainly can help your case.”

Brad says his team loves decorating the office and really enjoys Buddy’s annual visit.

“Buddy is our sixth team member. He helps us get out into the community and see old friends, make new friends and just spread the joy of Christmas.” And it’s hard to keep a frown when an elf on a shelf is around. “Buddy is what makes small town life so wonderful, “says Brad, “he brings out the brightest holiday spirit in all of us. “

Follow the Adventures of Buddy, the State Farm Elf on Facebook as he appears all over Effingham County this holiday season. Find Buddy and get a little boost of Christmas magic!

SLEEP IS GOOD MEDICINE

Sleep can sometimes feel like self-care that can wait or a reward you need to earn. However, the opposite is true. When it comes to your health, sleep is just as important as physical activity and nutrition.

While you sleep, your body is busy healing and repairing itself, learning and actively preventing chronic diseases. For most adults, getting healthy sleep means sleeping for at least 7 hours each night without waking up frequently, going to bed and waking up at roughly the same times each day and waking up feeling refreshed. Healthy sleep helps the body boost immunity, manage weight, reduce stress and lower the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

“We know chronic insufficient sleep can have a detrimental impact on personal health and increase the risk of many diseases,” said Jennifer L. Martin, a licensed clinical psychologist and professor of medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. “Healthy sleep is also important for mood regulation and mental health, helping to reduce the risk of problems such as anxiety and depression.”

However, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1 in 3 adults in the United States report getting less than 7 hours of sleep per night. Your daily routine—what you eat and drink, the medications you take, how you schedule your days and how you spend your evenings—can significantly impact the quality and duration of your sleep.

We know chronic insufficient sleep can have a detrimental impact on personal health and increase the risk of many diseases.

Tips to Improve your Sleep

These tips from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine’s “Sleep Is Good Medicine” campaign—which aims to emphasize sleep as a key pillar of health, equivalent with nutrition and exercise—can help you create a healthy sleep routine to improve your health today and in the long run.

• Keep a consistent sleep schedule. Get up at the same time every day, even on weekends and during vacations.

• Set a bedtime early enough to get at least 7 hours of sleep each night.

• Use your bed only for sleep and sex, or when you are sick. Watch TV and work outside the bedroom.

• Make your bedroom quiet and relaxing. Keep the room at a comfortable, cool temperature.

• Reduce fluid intake before bedtime.

• Turn off electronic devices at least 30 minutes before bedtime.

• Don’t eat a large meal before bedtime. If you are hungry at night, eat a light, healthy snack.

• Avoid drinking caffeine in the afternoon or evening.

• If you don’t fall asleep after 20 minutes, get out of bed. Do a quiet activity without a lot of light.

• Avoid alcohol before bedtime.

• Keep a sleep diary. Over a two-week period, track when you go to bed each day, wake during the night and wake in the morning. Also track when you exercise, nap, take medication or have caffeine or alcohol.

Even if you don’t think you have a sleep problem, talk to your doctor about your sleep and share your sleep diary. Together, you can figure out what healthy sleep looks like for you and how to get it. This can help prevent sleep difficulties before they become harder to treat.

Is Your Diet Killing You?

Overcoming nutrition-related medical challenges requires changing lifestyle and eating habits so that diet and exercise come together in manageable, achievable steps. This is why working with a medical nutritional counselor is an important piece of the medical-treatment puzzle.

Brooke Jackson, MSN-RN, CNS is a medical nutritional counselor who specializes in creating custom nutrition and lifestyle plans designed to meet patients where they are and how they live.

Her practice is currently accepting new clients. She will work one-on-one with you to create a nutrition plan based on your current weight, your food preferences, and your cooking abilities. Every aspect of the nutrition plan is catered to you.

Her services are meant for clients who have nutrition-related illnesses or simply their quality of life is impaired by their weight, with patients often weighing 200300 (or more) pounds.

“I create healthy diets that specifically meet them where they are currently,” usually targeting small and attainable goals. She said, “I have found that lowcalorie diets are simply not sustainable and therefore they do not work.”

Brooke says, “To truly overcome nutrition-related illnesses, clients need to pursue a holistic lifestyle where diet, exercise, and other key factors come together.”

Her new business as a private practitioner helps clients achieve their weight loss goals. “Part of my job has always been helping patients with nutrition related issues, and now I am bringing that aspect public by accepting clients privately and creating custom diets utilizing a holistic approach.”

Nutrition-Related illness

Nutrition-related illnesses account for over half of the top ten causes of death. According to the CDC, these are:

Heart disease: 696,962

· Cancer: 602,350 COVID-19: 350,831

· Accidents (unintentional injuries): 200,955

· Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 160,264

· Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 152,657

· Alzheimer’s disease: 134,242 Diabetes: 102,188

· Influenza and pneumonia: 53,544 Kidney disease: 52,547

This means you are probably personally capable of reducing and/or eliminating, or at least stabilizing, chronic conditions that plague us today—most of them being tied tightly to obesity.

“What you put in your mouth, how you move your body and how you live your life are infinitely more important, or at least as important as your medical treatment.”

About Brooke

Originally from Michigan, Brooke relocated to Georgia in 2014 to pursue further opportunities as a Nurse. When she isn’t working, she is an avid traveler, having visited more than two dozen countries. For local relaxation, she enjoys a nice sunset, biking the coastal towns and escaping to the mountains in Asheville.

Brooke says she received very little training in nursing school or beyond that would help guide patients in a holistic fashion and she desperately wanted to, which compelled her to enroll at Cornell University in their Nutrition Sciences programs.

She also has a Master’s in Nursing Education and is a practicing Registered Nurse which gives her a unique trifecta of having medical, education and nutrition sciences to back her.

Brooke offers one-on-one counseling with diet customization and will work

with clients remotely or locally. She is dedicated to helping clients achieve their weight loss and healthier living goals with manageable changes that will last a lifetime. Step-by-step, she is with her clients on their journey to a healthy life. A nutritional consultation lasts approximately one hour and includes the following:

Completion of a food diary.

· Complete personalized intake nutrition form.

· Laboratory data review and recommendations.

· Creation of customized plan. Schedule follow-up for implementation.

IV INVIGORATION STATION:

Bringing IV Hydration to Effingham

It’s estimated that 75 percent of Americans are chronically dehydrated. There’s a solution, IV Invigoration Station—conveniently located in Rincon. IV therapy outside of a hospital setting has become popular in recent years as people seek new ways to stay healthy. With IV therapy, patients receive specialized infusions of fluids that provide a combination of hydration and vitamins. Most vitamins are water soluble, so they are not as effective when taken orally. An intravenous delivery ensures that cells get more of the nutrients they need.

At IV Invigoration Station, patients receive customized IV infusions in a comfortable environment with three recliners. Infusions start at $135 and take anywhere from 45-90 minutes. For patients with hectic schedules, IV Invigoration Station can also make house calls within Effingham County.

Infusion recipes include: Myers Mix for General Wellness— Created by Dr. John Myers, this infusion is

ideal for an energy boost for those dealing with sinus infections, jet lag or fatigue.

Hangover Help—No one likes the feeling of the morning after a night on the town. Hangover Help gives a dose of B vitamins and extra hydration after a night of imbibing. It can be done before an evening of festivities or after.

Migraine/Pain—This infusion is designed for patients with chronic pain, migraines, or diabetic neuropathy, combining fluids with a pain reliever and an anti-inflammatory.

Immune Booster—The Immune Booster packs a punch with vitamin C, zinc, and B vitamins to keep the immune system ready to keep illnesses at bay.

Metabolic/Weight Loss—When combined with a balanced diet and exercise, the Metabolic/Weight Loss infusion can help enhance your results by including added vitamins and minerals that boost metabolism and encourage weight loss.

While it’s not as flashy as this year’s hottest toy, it could be considered much more valuable. Why?

Typically, children are more easily insured and premiums are generally lower since they’re in such an early stage of life. Plus, the premiums will never increase, regardless of age or state of health.

Shopping for a child or grandchild? Before buying another toy that could end up tossed to the side, why not get them something that will last?

GIVING BACK THIS SEASON IN THE EFFINGHAM COMMUNITY

28 December/January 2022 | www.EFFINGHAMMAGAZINE.com

The holidays are a great time to celebrate all the blessings we have received throughout the year. But what about the less fortunate—especially during the holiday season?

Good news! There are so many Effingham County charities that are “giving back” this holiday season. We did some research and found the best way to support that effort is not to give to multiple charities but to contact United Way of the Coastal Empire. They serve four counties, including Effingham County. Their mission is to, “improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities.” They act as somewhat of a liaison and 100% of what you donate goes straight back into the community.

This year United Way of the Coastal Empire partnered with multiple charities including Manna House Ministries and The Salvation Army.

Empowering People

Kim Dennis, Area Director for the

United Way of the Coastal Empire has been affiliated with United Way in one way or another for nearly 25 years. She loves her job, and the most rewarding part is knowing that these resources are more than providing a temporary fix.

“Our areas of focus are providing a safety net in times of need, helping people

Partnering Nonprofits

This year, partnering nonprofits include The Salvation Army, The Empty Stocking Fund, Ready2CONNECT, Inc., Family Promise, Churches United, area schools and of course Manna House Ministries. They all provide assistance to the community of Effingham County.

out of rough spots. But we are also here to empower people. Just like teaching a man to fish gives him the ability to help himself, we are here to improve lives. We look for holes in services in our community and we assist other nonprofits with those holes,” says Kim.

What great concepts and an outstanding history of giving back to the community!

We spoke with Lisa Bush, Executive Director of Manna House Ministries in Rincon. Lisa has an amazing story of how she got to her place at Manna House. She grew up in a family who served and volunteered so she’s been volunteering for years.

“I began volunteering in 1999 with my children and fell in love with everything... It really came natural for me to give back.”

Lisa was appointed the Executive Director in 2007 and says, “What keeps me going every day is the volunteers and groups and clients and customers have been a part of my life for many years. I’m

Our areas of focus are providing a safety net in times of need, helping people out of rough spots. But we are also here to empower people. www.EFFINGHAMMAGAZINE.com | December/January 2022 29

always amazed by the donors who step up to meet needs.

Lisa sings the praises of many in the community and how they contribute to the less fortunate.

“We have a great team of volunteers and staff that keep everything running smoothly!”

In November, Manna House Ministries distributed 800 Boxes of Hope providing Thanksgiving food items for families in need. They also plan to provide Christmas assistance as well.

Giving Back

How can we “give back” this season? Not just out of compassion, but out of gratitude for all the blessings we have received in 2022.

Lisa believes in a few core ways to “give back.” The first way is to give your time and volunteer. Volunteers are

so important and for many charities, volunteers are literally the motor of the process, and without them the vehicle of generosity wouldn’t run.

Next, think about donating food or resources.

Finally, Lisa encourages the community to thrift shop. “We always encourage our community to support our thrift shop by shopping to end hunger! Every dollar generated helps provide meals for those in need. Store hours are every Thursday & second Saturday 9:00am-2:00pm. We love to open more—but it requires more volunteers, Come join us!”

The holidays are supposed to be a time of cheer but there are many hurting single people and families that need your help. Clearly, there is no question that there is a great need for us to “give back” during the holidays, but a lot of these nonprofits rely on year-round giving.

But, if in December you are looking for a place to do your year-end charitable giving, please go on the United Way website at www.uwce.org and see how you can give. As Kim Dennis says, “We keep a database of families, so the charities don’t duplicate efforts. We are the ‘connector’ between agencies. We believe in keeping communication open and in full collaboration. We literally “unite” them. ■

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY of EFFINGHAM COUNTY

Habitat for Humanity of Effingham County helps families attain the goal of homeownership—giving them a stable place to live. It’s about more than the physical security of a home, it’s about the memories that are made there.

According to a survey of Habitat homeowners conducted by Habitat for Humanity of Georgia, 9 out of 10 respondents have maintained or increased the amount of time their families spend together, and more than two-thirds of them described the quality of the time spent with their families to be better than before moving into their Habitat homes.

Before moving into her Habitat home in Rincon, Brittney Roper and her two children were living with her mother. Because she met many of the qualifications for Habitat homeownership, she decided to apply and was accepted in 2017.

“I was overwhelmed with joy. I didn’t think that I would qualify, and when I did, it was just too good to be true,” Brittney said.

Brittney collaborated with a team of contractors and volunteers for eight months to help with the construction of her home. This was part of the 250

hours of “sweat equity” that is required of every Habitat homeowner, which can also be completed by volunteering at the ReStore.

Prospective Habitat homeowners also have to meet other requirements, like an annual income that is 60 to 80 percent of the area’s median income, employment

Thanksgiving meal for the second time and enjoyed having her relatives join her. Brittney has also hosted birthday parties, game nights and other family gatherings at her home, including Christmas.

“My home is a more central location for family bonding,” Brittney said. “[My children are] looking forward to spending many more Christmases here.”

in the same job for at least one year and a credit score that is greater than 640. They must also be able to pay a 2 percent down payment and an affordable monthly mortgage payment.

“I’m thankful for Habitat being able to provide for our community for younger generations that are striving to have a home. It’s harder in today’s economy to actually be a homeowner, but with Habitat anything’s possible,” Brittney said.

In September 2018, Brittney’s home was completed and she, her son Julian and her daughter Ella were able to move in and start making memories.

This year, Brittney hosted her family’s

It’s clear that for the holidays you can’t beat home sweet home. By donating to Habitat for Humanity of Effingham County, you can help local families create unforgettable memories with their friends and relatives.

Another home is currently under construction in Guyton and volunteers are needed to help on the build site to stay on track for a target completion date of spring 2023. Construction takes place every Saturday from 8am-3pm, weather permitting. Sign up at habitatec. org/volunteer.

Helping Keep the Shipping Industry Moving

Geddings Electrical and Mechanical LLC is a growing company specializing in the conveyor and building maintenance industry.

Founded in 2008 by husband and wife Chris and Samantha Geddings, Geddings Electrical and Mechanical LLC is certified and licensed to perform all electrical and mechanical duties. Initially they addressed residential and commercial needs, before concentrating on commercial conveyors.

Geddings currently has several industrial contracts to perform conveyor installation, service and repair, preventative maintenance services, electrical services and facility maintenance and repairs. They maintain several buildings in Georgia and South Carolina, with an additional building slated for 2023.

They are on call seven days a week, 24 hours a day as needed, in order to maintain industrial conveyor belt systems in multiple facilities in Georgia and South Carolina.

Keeping Everything Running Smoothly

You may not know their name, or even understand what they do, but they are the folks that keep everything running smoothly. If the conveyor system breaks down, the system is on hold and for most businesses, being “on hold” for very long is unacceptable.

When there is mechanical or electrical trouble, Geddings is there to fix the problem. From changing out bolts to addressing a maintenance issue, they are on the job.

We hear the words “supply chain” but rarely do we know how it actually works. Packages and other cargo go through several stages before arriving at their final destinations. Conveyor technology is the industry standard because it is extremely functional and produces the results businesses want- speed and accuracy.

But like all mechanical and electrical systems, things break down. That’s where Geddings comes in, seven days a week, night, and day. They service the facility and keep the system moving.

Increasing Business

Geddings Electrical and Mechanical LLC is interested in increasing their

conveyor and building maintenance business. “We can service anything with conveyors,” says Chris, “and we have room to grow, while fulfilling our current commitments.”

They are currently hiring to expand their crew for varied positions. “We have employees who are handy with whatever we throw at them for that day,” says Samantha. “Some weld, some know plumbing, and some do construction work. We have electrical workers who save the day when the facility is hot and needs their fans running or when the early morning shifts need extra lights hung to stock the trucks with all your packages.”

They have people who just clean the machines and that’s truly a dirty job, but everyone has something they prefer doing and we have those who can do it all. We are small but each of us are talented in our own ways.”

Geddings is licensed and insured and takes all safety precautions. They provide work trucks, gas cards and some tools. New hires must have a valid driver’s license and pass a hair follicle test.

Base pay ranges from $15-$30 dependent on skills and experience. The company offers health insurance, Aflac, Global, yearly bonuses, a raise after 90 days, some paid holidays and plans to

add a 401K in the near future. OSHA certification training or forklift certificate training is a plus.

If you are handy with tools and think this job is for you, use the contact info below for an application and interview.

Family Life

Chris is a South Carolina native and Samantha, originally from Indiana, has been here since she was eight years old. She laughs, “I met my Chris when I was 14 and he was 16 and we’ve been annoying each other on a daily basis ever since! We’ve been together 30 great years and we wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Truly a family business, Samantha says husband Chris “is the main force and I help out.” For Chris, owning his business and working out of his shop is a dream come true. They have a seven year old son, Karson, and they love going to the beach or the lake as a family. Karson says he wants to follow in his dad’s footsteps and eventually join the family business.

The Geddings say they “love what we do, and we are proud to help keep the shipping business going.”

More Than Pest Control

Darrell Dasher grew up in the Sand Hill area, so managing the Rincon office of Yates-Astro really is “home” for him. He gives back to his hometown by officiating sports events for all age groups in and around Effingham County.

His influence goes beyond our area through his involvement as a Shriner and a Mason. Shriner Hospitals for children never charge for their services, a blessing that is the result of the work of Darrell and many others. The Children’s Home in Macon is an outgrowth of his volunteer work as well.

Darrell considers it a form of “giving back” to his hometown by protecting area homes and businesses as a pest control professional with Yates-Astro. It is hometown people like Darrell Dasher who have made Yates-Astro, a family owned local business, the largest pest control provider in the region.

RINCON LIBRARY AND THE LIVE OAK PUBLIC LIBRARIES SYSTEM

A Resource for the Community

The Rincon Library is part of the Live Oak Public Libraries system consisting of 16 library locations serving a 3 county region in southeast Georgia.

Each year, the 16 locations host more than 1.1 million visitors, check out more than 1.1 million items, and present programs to nearly 125,000 patrons in Chatham, Effingham, and Liberty Counties. It is a large library system with a caring and hometown touch, as each branch works diligently to serve the needs of their local residents.

Effingham Magazine spoke with Library Manager Catherine Driggers to learn more about what Rincon Library offers the community from preschoolers to senior citizens. Catherine has been at the branch for 12 years and says, “I have seen many changes over the years. The library has expanded so much from books and a copy machine, and it has truly become a community resource. We are always expanding and continuing to grow.”

In the past year, the Rincon branch served 32,800 in person visits. For every library user there is a different reason for visiting, from checking out books to using computers, printing documents, sending faxes, attending story times and other programs and unique events. Programs are very popular, and the library offers a full slate for various ages.

Community Partnerships

Today’s library is so much more than electronic and print resources. Of course, you can borrow books, audiobooks, CDs, DVDs, at each branch, but they also offer hotspot and Chromebook loans.

Catherine says, “You can come in and sit in the corner with your laptop, use the library’s Wi-Fi and have a quiet place to work or you can borrow a hotspot to bring home.”

They also have wonderful partnership programs such as the Library Family Passes to Parks and Museums program and during the summer the library

partners with America’s Second Harvest to provide meals at the branch for hungry children.

In December 2021, Live Oak Public Libraries was selected as one of almost 500 sites across the country to celebrate the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope, NASA’s next great space science observatory.

The Rincon Library has hosted community events, virtual programs, and distributed takehome project kits to encourage all ages to explore space, science, and the universe. They have Space Explorers Backpacks, full of fun spaceexploring tools and resources, that can be checked out.

Student PLAY Account

The Student PLAY Account automatically issues every public school student in Chatham and Effingham counties a public library card. Students use their student/lunch number just like

a library card, in fact no physical card or ID is needed and the program is fine free. Liberty County Schools will begin participating in this program soon.

SWEET TREATS CANNERY

There are plenty of sweet treats to be found at Sweet Treats Cannery!

Wendy and Eric Gambino have traveled across the Southeast visiting farms in eight states to select the best fruit for their selection of jams, jellies and pie fillings. Wendy has created 32 varieties of pie filling over the years, and her personal favorite is the strawberry rhubarb.

“We take pride in our signature pie fillings,” Wendy says. “We make it easy so that it can just be poured into a crust, thrown in your oven and have a fresh baked pie like it came off the tree.”

Wendy grew up with canning as a way of life, preserving seasonal fruits and vegetables from peak season to enjoy year-round. She went on to pursue a degree in culinary arts and started her business with a cottage license 12 years ago. In May 2021, Wendy and Eric opened a brick-and-mortar location in Springfield, where most of their products are made.

In addition to selling their goods instore, they have traveled to more than 70 markets and festivals this year to share their products with a wider audience.

Customers are enticed by free samples and recipes, and Wendy recently held a contest for bakers to showcase the versatility of her pie fillings.

More than 30 people entered the contest, where they were challenged to create a nonpie recipe that used a Sweet Treats Cannery pie filling of their choice. The winner received a $100 gift card to Sweet Treats Cannery to fuel their culinary passions.

Community support has been crucial to the success of Sweet Treats Cannery. Wendy has partnered with local FFA groups, 4-H groups, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to show young people the possibilities of a career combining the agriculture and culinary fields.

Sweet Treats Cannery also offers a selection of family-size desserts that can be preordered during the holiday season.

FASHIONED CARAMEL APPLE POUND CAKE

Simply choose your crust style and filling and you can have a customized 9-inch pie ready for pick-up! Order by December 20 to have an extra-special dessert for Christmas.

A pie filling from Sweet Treats Cannery has more uses than just baking a delicious pie. Some cherry pie filling added to brownies or some blueberry lavender pie filling added to a cheesecake elevates desserts to a new level. Wendy recommends her Caramel Apple Pie Filling combined with a pound cake recipe to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla. Whisk together flour, baking powder and salt and ADD to the large mixing bowl until well combined.

Spoon one-third of the batter into a prepared Bundt cake pan.

Top with half a jar of the prepared Caramel Apple Pie filling, then top with remaining batter.

Bake until a cake tester or wooden pick inserted near the center comes out clean. 50 minutes to one hour. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes.

Remove from the pan and let cool completely on the wire rack.

Let me start by saying that depression and anxiety are very serious. This topic is complex, and I am not writing this article lightly.

Depression is now called Major Depressive Disorder. 21 million adults have had at least one major depressive episode. 19.1% of adults had major anxiety in 2021.

Life over the last several years has been incredibly stressful. Does that mean as humans we are inherently broken and can’t recover? I truly do not think so. Can life events severely impact us? Absolutely.

But humans are resilient! Our bodies have an incredible ability to heal. Sometimes we just need to understand that being unhealthy can cause and/or exacerbate numerous issues.

How Can Food Contribute to Anxiety and Depression?

Everything we eat becomes part of our cells. Everything. I always tell my clients that there is no neutral bite of food. Each forkful either promotes health or promotes disease. Our food also dictates the health of our gut microbiome (the trillions of cells in our gastrointestinal tract). We know the microbiome affects the brain and thinking patterns.

95% of serotonin (feel good hormone) comes from the gut. 70% of our immune system is found in our gut. GABA production, neurotransmitter production, nutrient production, saccharolytic and proteolytic fermentation happens in the gut (how you break down carbohydrates and proteins and why you may get bloated after eating them).

This means, having the proper bacteria, in the proper ratios with a healthy gut lining is key for proper brain function. The microbial species have a lot of control over neurotransmitter production and neuroinflammation and the integrity of the gut lining will contribute to anxiety and depression.

Microbiome researchers now know that low butyrate production (short chain fatty acids production in the gut) contribute to depression. Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) are a bacterial toxin that can cause inflammation and health issues if they reach the bloodstream. LPS is normally housed in the gut but can damage the epithelial lining of the gut and leak out causing “leaky gut.” High fatty foods also increase LPS production. An overgrowth of opportunistic (bad) bacteria increases LPS production. Leaky gut and LPS cause inflammation that will transfer to the brain contributing to anxiety and depression. Butyrate production can be positively affected by supporting the

bacteria that produce butyrate and being sure the colon cells are healthy. Leaky gut can be rectified through proper protocols, removal of food sensitivities and lifestyle changes.

As a Nutrition Therapist, I provide testing that will show exactly what is happening in the gut along with testing for food sensitivity that can contribute to leaky gut and inflammation.

Working on your gut microbiome through testing, proper protocols, proper nutrition, and lifestyle changes can significantly increase proper neurotransmitter production, reduce neuroinflammation, increase butyrate production and ensure proper absorption of nutrients.

This will go a long way on improving mood and reducing anxiety and depression. www.nutritioncoachkerri.com

iHeart Dental Named Best

Cosmetic Dentist in Effingham

Often going to the dentist is associated with a routine cleaning or the less pleasant business of getting a filling or a crown.

But at iHeart Dental, Dr. Misty Seale and her team offer a selection of cosmetic dentistry services to complement routine dental care, including veneers, traditional dentures, digital dentures, denture implants and clear aligners. Their spectacular results have led them to be named Best Cosmetic Dentist in this year’s Best of Effingham Reader’s Choice Awards.

They also offer aesthetic services like Botox and dermal fillers to enhance the results after rebuilding a patient’s smile.

“Cosmetic dentistry changes people’s lives. When you first see somebody, one of the first things that you see is their smile,” Dr. Seale said.

Dr. Seale has plenty of advice to offer anyone who is ready to consider cosmetic dental procedures to improve or rebuild their smile.

Consider Both Form and Function.

Cosmetic dentistry comes with its own set of considerations, both for the dentist and the patient.

“Everybody’s face is different. You also have to consider the functionality of the jaws and the mouth and the teeth itself. So not only is it cosmetic, it has to function well,” Dr. Seale said.

Dental implants are put to the test every day withstanding high temperatures, high acidity and the pressure of day-today activities like eating and drinking. Any cosmetic service has to be able to hold up to those conditions in addition to improving a patient’s smile. A good cosmetic dentist will take all these lifestyle factors into account.

Have a Treatment Plan.

Creating a treatment plan together with your dentist will alleviate a lot of stress,

set up realistic expectations and help give you the best possible outcome.

“I try to eliminate as many variables as I can to make things as predictable as possible,” Dr. Seale said.

At iHeart Dental, they have a variety of tools in-house that can show you your results before committing to any major procedures. They take initial impressions that are used to create a full digital mock-up. That mock-up is then 3D printed to create a model of a patient’s new smile that can be temporarily fitted inside the mouth.

Ask for Before and After Photos.

While many dentists can do cosmetic procedures, it’s not always their specialty. Seeing samples of their work can give you an idea of what to expect. You can also ask for recommendations from a friend or family member who may have used

the dentist’s services to see their results firsthand.

Look for someone who is passionate about what they do.

Dr. Seale feels strongly that all dentistry is cosmetic dentistry, so she takes great care of her patients whether they’re seeing her for routine cleaning appointments or extensive reconstructive procedures.

“When I go in, I get to really know the patient in and out. It’s not just their mouth, it’s their whole body,” Dr. Seale said.

“We want people to be as passionate about their dental health as we are.”

iHeart Dental also caters to patients who may experience anxiety at the dentist. Dr. Seale feared the dentist as a child, and wanted to build a more approachable experience when opening her own practice. They have two service dogs (one active and one in training) who are available to offer comfort to nervous patients.

Their compassionate approach and passion for building healthy smiles set them apart, and Dr. Seale relishes the challenge of taking a patient’s smile to the next level.

“I like puzzles and I like being able to make solutions by thinking outside the box,” Dr. Seale said. “I love being able to transform people into a better state.”
