Melissa McBride Stille of Stille-DeWitt Health Brokerage, LLC

“I work for my clients, not the insurance company.”

When it comes to her work, Melissa McBride Stille would rather talk about helping clients than herself. She has been an independent insurance agent for 4 years and has been in the health insurance industry for 14 years with specific expertise in Medicare. As a health insurance broker, she is passionate about matching her clients with the best health care options available. She says, “I love my job and I love helping people!” It all started when she was working for a company and realized her position was essentially a dead end job. “I had two young children so when I had the opportunity to be Regional Broker Manager for Coventry Healthcare, I went for it,” she said. Melissa got the job but had to get her Georgia Life and Health License. “I absolutely had to pass so I studied hard and passed with flying colors. Next, I had to learn the business.” Her job was to recruit and train agents and keep them compliant within the many regulations. “I was very successful, and I enjoyed my work. In 2017, I remarried and traveling for my work had become a challenge. Supervising agents spread across 23 counties in Georgia meant I was on the road a lot.” When the opportunity became available to manage the health department at DeWitt Insurance, Melissa was excited for the new chapter. Melissa made the decision to purchase the agency’s health department in 2019 and she became the sole proprietor of Stille-DeWitt Health Brokerage in 2020. “DeWitt Insurance Agency has been in business since 1956. People in the community know the name, so I incorporated it into my agency name to keep the continuity within the community. I was very fortunate to have DeWayne Ladner, the owner of the agency, mentor me as he had been mentored by Lenda DeWitt (Crosby), when he purchased the agency in 2002.” Customer Service Customer service is a main focus for the agency. Melissa doesn't want her clients to feel as if they are just a number. “I care about each and every one of them and I do a review of everyone’s health policies every year because there are so many changes annually,” she says. She gives every client her cell number—it is even in all of her advertising so that every client, even future clients, can feel comfortable reaching out to her. She says, “I work for my clients, not the insurance company.” “Saving money is very important to most clients so I present multiple options enabling them to make educated decisions.” As a specialist in Medicare, Melissa works with Medicare recipients over and under 65, including those who have Medicare through Social Security Disability and also with people utilizing Affordable Care Act Marketplace insurance, and some group insurances. Client Daylon Barnard says, “Before working with Melissa, I was paying $1800-$2100 every 3 months for my insulin. Melissa took my medication list, shopped the available plans for me and found a plan that covered my insulin better. Now I pay less than $200 every 3 months.” If you have a question regarding Medicare or other health insurance options, give Melissa a call!

This is our second annual Effingham Magazine Families in Business issue. It was not enough to just publish this amazing issue for one year only. We had to keep it going. Family members who are building this community together brick by brick should be celebrated more than once, don’t you think? And there are so many— too many to cover in one issue. So we do our best to recognize the men and women who go to work each day alongside a spouse, sibling, father or mother to offer their products and services to their neighbors and friends. We also celebrate those businesses that treat their employees and customers like family as well.

When family members work alongside one another, it can bring unique challenges and incredible possibilities. The connections made and relationships built when you share your business with others are one of the most rewarding aspects of owning a business. We can all learn a little from their experiences. We hope you enjoy the February/March issue of Effingham Magazine as much as we enjoyed creating it for you.

Apollo is the office service dog that specializes in helping with anxiety, and the patients love him. He is currently training his brother Kronos to be his sidekick in the office. They are two of the couple’s five family dogs—all American Bulldogs. “We’ve had patients call to make sure that Apollo would be in the office for their upcoming appointment,” Perez said. “There’s something truly special

about Apollo. He loves the patients just as much as they love him.” Taking Care of Their Staff To come full circle with the office environment, an equal amount of care is considered in the comfort and well-being of the iHeart Dental staff. It is important to the owners that their employees are well taken care of, and it shows in the staff’s positive attitude. iHeart Dental’s hiring practices are very specific. After ensuring that the candidate has the required skill set, they conduct a personality test to make sure that the potential employee would be a good fit with the qualities they are looking for.

“We look for talent as well as passion and the right demeanor. We found that when the staff is passionate, authentic and easygoing, it helps with the patient experience significantly,” Seale said. Community Partnership They also believe in active community partnerships. They often can be found participating at local events in their signature iHeart Dental jeep, giving back to the community, offering on-site services. iHeart Dental has chosen to contribute to several nonprofits, and a portion of their profits benefit these organizations. While very much a serious business,

a great amount of thought is put behind the softer and lighter side of running the practice. Perez said they approach the business with “the care of a private practice and core of a corporation.” The company’s branding was meticulously designed. They wanted something that was playful but “not kidish” and captures the essence of their mission, vision and values. Their mission is clear: to create a practice that is honest, comfortable and geared toward adults (seniors are favorites) that will take the stigma out of visiting the dentist while offering a safe place to maintain oral health. Their vision seems to be filled with

endless possibilities to continue to grow a business that is community-minded, family-oriented and world class. With many values within them—as a business, as leaders and as a family—they said their top three are “honesty, integrity and love.” One thing is for sure: iHeart Dental is all heart. n

When Businesses Should Hire a Marketing Consultant By Dr. Jan Southern, J. DelSUR Marketing Group

A

marketing consultant is a highly skilled business professional who can improve a company’s brand, position and ultimately their success. Marketing consultants have varying specialties and areas of expertise, including social media strategy, content creation and optimizing your advertising budget. A consultant helps create a detailed marketing plan, determines the messaging for the identified target audience and recommends the right marketing mix of tactics to achieve the company goals. Here are five reasons to hire a marketing consultant:

The right marketing consultant is going to take a look at the big picture and help you choose marketing tactics specific to your business needs and then assess whether or not the campaign is getting the intended results.

3

You Can’t Afford to Hire a FullTime Marketing Team

Every company starts out thinking they can handle the marketing of their business themselves. You may be able to do some things on your own such as building a social media profile, scheduling content or setting up Google My Business, but to maximize your resources, hire a marketing professional. There is so much more to marketing than posting something on social media. A marketing professional will be able to look at the big picture, identify the goals and targets and help choose the right marketing and advertising tactics that will bring significant results.

5

You Want a Brand Refresh or a Complete Change in Your Brand Identity Your brand and visual identity is one of the most important components of your business. It’s one of the first things potential customers notice. Often, team members and leadership are too close to the company and culture to see the brand how your customers see it. An outside perspective from a trained brand expert can make all the difference. Hiring a professional who can take a fresh look at the company and conduct the appropriate marketing research is essential when tackling a rebranding for any business.

Here are just some of the things a marketing pro can do for you: • Write a strategic marketing plan aimed at delivering results • Identify ways to attract new business • Implement effective digital strategy, content marketing and social media management You Are Marketing 1 Without • Search engine optimization (SEO) plan a Plan • Conduct marketing research A marketing consultant will save you time As business owners, we • Develop and implement a get caught up in our day-toand money because their experience allows plan for customer retention day activities and before we them to complete tasks much more quickly • Website design or redesign know it, months have gone • Expert copywriting to help by and we have spent time and have access to others with the right your business stand out and money on marketing expertise to tackle your problems. • Design an advertising and advertising without campaign really knowing why. Remembering

CLARENCE E. MORGAN

E

ffingham’s beloved Clarence Morgan, 75, passed away Jan. 5, 2022, at his residence. A native of Effingham, Clarence retired from Effingham County Board of Education after 30 years of coaching and teaching but was employed at Effingham County Recreation Sports and Management since 1973, eventually becoming its director. He played many years on the B & B softball team, was part of the Josh Reddick Foundation and very instrumental to the Effingham Navigators. He served on various committees and received many awards with the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association, including Most Distinguished Professional in 2017. He was the recipient of the Golden Eagle Award from the Coastal Georgia Council of Boy Scouts of America. If you knew anything about recreational sports in Effingham, you knew Clarence. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.

Mr. Clarence had the most generous and kind soul. He never met a stranger. I was n “outsider”and he treated me (and the members of Sweat Like a Mother, aka SLAM) like we had grown up in his backyard. When the Clarence E Morgan Complex opened, he encouraged our workout group to move there. He insisted the park was meant to be used by the people of the county. He wanted us there, included us in every event, even asking SLAM to represent during the groundbreaking ceremony of the new gym. Before COVID, we would see him almost weekly-coming by class just to check in with all of us. He always talked with me about his daughter April because we share the name. He lit up when he talked about her and the boys! Effingham will surely feel his loss for years to come but will relish in all that he has done for this community for a lifetime! –Apryl Lee 22 February/March 2022 | www.EFFINGHAMMAGAZINE.com

When you hear the name Clarence Morgan you immediately think of Effingham Recreation. I coached my girls softball team and could always reach out to him with questions or issues and he would immediately be there with answers. Clarence coached my daughter on the Effingham Middle School team. I can’t say enough what a great man he was. As years have passed I have grandchildren that now participate in sports. If Clarence saw me at a game he always came over to say hello and give a hug. He loved Effingham County Recreation and everyone that participated in a sport as well as the parents, grandparents and friends who were there to cheer them on. We will all miss him. –Jan Norton

I founded the Effingham County Navigator Team (ECNT) in 2011. ECNT is a support group and non-competitive recreation program for children with special needs/disabilities. I invited Mr. Clarence to one of our meetings and he came. After hearing the parents discuss how much they’d like to see their children get to play ball he said he would make it happen. And he did. At our first outing for baseball we asked him if he wanted us on one of the out the way ball fields, Mr Clarence’s response: “No, I want y’all right out front where everyone can see y’all because y’all have just as much right to be there as anyone else.” When Josh Reddick and his foundation approached Mr. Clarence about how he could give back to the community it was Mr. Clarence that asked him: “Have you heard of the Navigators?” He shared how we need an all accessible baseball field because we had kids in wheelchairs who had to stop participating because the clay would get in the wheels of their wheelchairs, how the children had difficulties accessing the current ball fields. And that was the beginning of the Josh Reddick Stadium. Mr. Clarence was so proud of the Navigators he would go out of his way to do special events just for them, whether it was a sensory Christmas with Santa making sure each child was given a gift bag or a visit from the Easter Bunny (he had Ms. Brenda dress up like the Easter Bunny). He ordered basketball jerseys. No matter what the Navigators needed he would make sure we had it. He would tell the staff, “Whatever the Navigators need or want, just do it.” In the beginning when we needed to do a fundraiser, he would let us use the gym for the whole weekend so our parents would have time to set up and cleanup. He made sure the players received trophies. And one thing many do not realize: Mr. Clarence attended a presentation at GSU about the barriers that prevent people with disabilities face in accessing their community and he learned that lacking adult changing stations was one of those barriers. So when CEM was built, he made not only did the ladies restroom have an adult changing station but also the men’s restroom, because he understood father’s have to change their loved ones, too. He wanted to make sure whether it was a boy or girl they were thought of with dignity. So little Effingham County has something even the Mercedes Benz Stadium doesn’t have, and that’s because when it came to Mr. Clarence, when there is a will there is a way. And he wanted to make sure ALL kids and young adults had the opportunity to play sports in Effingham County. Mr. Clarence would tell folks that being invited to that meeting many years ago was one of the best things that ever happened to him; and that resulted in children with disabilities getting to do something they would not have been able to do: PLAY BALL!

Coach Morgan was one of the most genuine people I have ever met. He loved his community and he gave 100% effort to everything that he was involved with. But his ultimate love was Pam, April, Walt and his grandsons. There was not a hill that he wouldn’t climb for his family. He was a GREAT husband, daddy and grandfather. Clarence is a true legend and he lived his life making things better for others. Many people will benefit for years to come from the sacrifices that he made. –James W. Dasher

• • • When I started Bike Effingham in January of 2020, scheduling a meeting with Coach Morgan was one of my first calls. The health and fitness of the people of Effingham County was always his top priority! The things we discussed in that meeting will be happening this year and I can't wait to share them with the residents of Effingham! I personally will do my best to carry on Coach Morgan's vision of fun and family-friendly recreational activities in the county. –Ashley Parker

• • • I have known Mr. Clarence since I was little. He would always let me sneak into the concession stand or the announcers box because he knew how much I loved to help. He always told me he was as proud of me as well as my family. He was always happy and he never had a bad thing to say. Whenever I played a game and he was there at the park, he always made a point to come say hey and give me a few pointers. He was an amazing man and will be greatly missed. – Danielle Howard

• • • Clarence was a great husband, father, grandfather, coach and friend! He always had a positive attitude and a smile on his face. He surely loved his family and Effingham County. He will be missed so much! –Stephanie Long

• • • Clarence always stopped to talk with me at the ball fields and I always enjoyed our conversations. Both he and Pam are wonderful people. I am so sorry that Clarence passed away and will miss seeing him on the field. God speed Clarence. –John Dean

–Pauline Shaw

• • • As the retired United Way Effingham Director, I had the privilege of working closely with Clarence for many years. He not only volunteered countless hours for the United Way in a variety of programs, but he also served as an advisory board member and Board Chair. Also, Clarence served an unprecedented three consecutive years as our United Way campaign chair in Effingham, raising close to $1,000,000! He did so much for so many in their county. He is irreplaceable. –Bonnie Dixon www.EFFINGHAMMAGAZINE.com | February/March 2022 23

THE THOMPSON FAMILY: Bringing Family Values to the Workplace Originally from Pembroke, Scott Thompson moved to Rincon in 1998. He learned the value of a family business and hard work while working for his uncle’s wrecker and septic service, Rahn’s. In 2004, after discovering college wasn’t for him, Thompson opened the first of several successful businesses “Scotty’s Pottys,” a portable restroom company. Shortly after, he started dating Laura and, in 2006, the couple moved to Guyton where they were wed. Then in 2008 they decided to add the RooterMan Plumbers franchise to offer other services to their growing company. After selling “Scotty’s Pottys” in 2011, Scott and Laura focused solely on growing RooterMan, and their family. Seeing a need for a small-town hardware store in Guyton, Thompson Hardware was born in 2017. Scott operated it for several years until his latest venture— Thompson & Thompson Service Group— demanded more of his time. The Thompson & Thompson Service Group brand was created in 2018 when Thompson added on HVAC services to fill the need of clients wanting a one stop shop. Eventually folding RooterMan into the company and adding electrical services in 2019, Thompson & Thompson has grown tremendously over the last few years. Gratitude to the Community Scott and Laura Thompson want to thank their clients and staff for being an integral part of Thompson & Thompson throughout the years. “We appreciate all of our customers and team members who have stuck with us and believed in us. Loyal customers and great employees helped us get to where we are, and we are thankful for every one of you.” It has been demanding work building the business and they attribute bringing the value of family to the workplace to helping them achieve success. “Our family is extremely important to us, and we believe that our employees’ families are just as important,” says Laura. New Owners, Same Great Company Due to the company’s mission, amazing culture, and success over the last few years, Thompson & Thompson gained the attention of several investors across the US. Recently presented with an opportunity to join one of the nation’s fastest-growing

service companies, Scott and Laura have decided to take the opportunity. “This was ultimately our end goal, however, the opportunity came way sooner than we ever expected,” said Scott. “The new owners will keep the same culture, the same mission, and the same team. The staff is a caring group. They care about our customers and our employees. In the end this is a people business.” Scott says the new owners have also committed to supporting the same local community organizations they have always supported, including the Ronald McDonald House. “Nothing will change! Thompson & Thompson will only get bigger and better, and will be able to give back even more to the community. We are extremely excited for the opportunities that will be presented to our team, and for our community.”

Carrying on that tradition today, Scott and Laura say, “Bringing our children up to know the true value of hard work and what it gets you has been important to us.” In August of 2020, Laura stepped away from the daily operations at Thompson & Thompson to be a full-time homeschooling Mom to their three children, ages six through twelve. As homeschoolers, they can incorporate travel into their lessons, and with the business sold the family is looking forward to being able to travel and explore the country. They are planning on a trip out west to Colorado, the Grand Canyon, and Yosemite National Park. “We are looking forward to making some incredible memories with our kids,” say Scott and Laura. “But we are also excited about new business ventures as well. Keep watch as we transition to something new!”

Future Plans Scott says he will be slowing down and enjoying time with his family but at some point, they will create a new family business. “We want to continue being interactive with the community and helping solve problems. That’s been the key to every single business we’ve had.”

What is a Nutrition Therapist and How Can They Help Someone with Chronic Illness? By Kerri Dodson, Master Nutrition Therapist

There is no question that there is a need for several different types of health professionals in this modern time when many are plagued with different illnesses. Most people understand the function of a Nutritionist. Nutritionists counsel clients on healthy eating habits. A companion to the Nutritionist is a Dietitian. They help with disease-related malnutrition. The emerging Kerri Dodson, Master Nutrition field of the Nutrition Therapist, Master Health and Therapist takes a holistic— Wellness Coach looking at the whole body— approach to treating chronic illnesses through whole food nutrition and targeted supplementation. What Differentiates a Nutrition Therapist? A Nutrition Therapist, also known as a Holistic Nutrition Professional, places a priority on nutrient density and biochemical individuality. They receive a clinical education— upwards of 1100 hours plus continuing education credits—in order to provide science-based nutritional advice. Nutrition Therapists are educated to focus on which foods are highly reliable sources of the essential nutrients and how those nutrients interact within the human biochemical environment. A Nutrition Therapist also understands that certain foods may be more or less beneficial for each individual based on their unique biochemistry, illnesses and health needs. What I offer as a Nutritional Therapist As a Nutrition Therapist, I focus on my client’s specific illnesses and the mechanism driving that illness. I work with my clients on individualized nutritional protocols in order to dial down that mechanism to facilitate improvements in their health. I specialize in nutritional protocols, lifestyle adjustments and supplements for chronic illnesses such as autoimmune diseases, type II diabetes, hyperlipidemia, high blood pressure and early onset dementia. Where medication may mask or reduce the presence of symptoms, I work with my clients to eliminate what is causing their specific health problems. Nutritional deficiencies and excesses along with lifestyle are the major contributing factors to chronic illness. I tell all my clients, there is no neutral bite of food. Each bite either promotes health or promotes illness. I can work with you to promote health. www.nutritioncoachkerri.com | 770-722-9580 nutritioncoachkerri@gmail.com

KURTIS & REHAN

MCNEIL

The Struggles & Successes of Mixing Business & Love Story by Walinda West | Photography by Todd Wood

hen Rehan and Kurtis McNeil married in 1993, they thought the next step in the relationship would be to go into business together. They were committed in life, so why not business, too? “It was a disaster,” Kurtis says of the pair’s first attempt to start a business. In 1995, the two opened The Happy Factory, a small gift shop in Charlotte, NC, that sold flowers, balloons and other novelties. A new marriage and a new business were losing combinations, the couple says. “Rehan was thinking from a creative structure and I was thinking from a cost structure, and the numbers weren’t adding up for me,” Kurtis says. Within two years, The Happy Factory shuttered its doors and Kurtis—who had been toggling between the store and his fulltime job as an industrial engineer in the food and pharmaceutical industry—focused on that job. Rehan, a communicator by training, went back to school to earn her degree in gerontology. “That business almost cost us our marriage because we didn’t see eye to eye,” Kurtis says. “We didn’t know how to compromise in marriage, let alone compromise in business. Of the experience, Rehan says the two were going in two directions, even though they appeared together. “I don’t think we communicated well. He was going one way and I was going in another way. What I learned from that experience is that if we are not in agreement, we don’t do it.” Trying New Things In 2005, when a job move sent the McNeils to Waco, Texas, Kurtis decided to try his hand in the mortgage business at a time when the housing industry was enjoying a boom. He had no way of knowing that a short time later, the market would take a dive, resulting in a collapse buoyed by low-interest rates and lenders doling out loans to borrowers with low- to- no credit histories as part of a sub-prime lending scheme. Kurtis’s short-lived mortgage career ended with the historic housing crisis amid a wave of defaults and a recession that crippled the housing industry throughout the country. The housing crisis sent Kurtis back to the engineering field he knew, while Rehan worked as a manager at the Methodist Children’s Home in Waco. But Kurtis says he couldn’t get the mortgage business out of his head. He knew—based on his organization skills—that he could be successful at it, with time. Rehan, on the other hand, was drawn to child welfare nonprofit work and did not share her husband’s interest in the mortgage business. In 2014, Kurtis and Rehan moved to Savannah to work for the Kerry Group while Rehan went to work for Effingham Schools in a role in which she served as a liaison between schools and parents. The Right Time The latter part of 2016 was the year that changed everything for the McNeils. With two daughters—Cicely and Clarissa—facing the teen years and college looming, the couple had numerous discussions about their futures and what would bring them joy in their careers. There was no question for Kurtis that he would re-enter the mortgage industry, and Rehan later moved from her job with Effingham schools to become a real estate agent. www.EFFINGHAMMAGAZINE.com | February/March 2022 29

The pair focus their attention on Effingham and Bryan counties, primarily catering to African American buyers whom Rehan says are underrepresented in homeownership. In Effingham County, the African American population stands at a little over 14 percent with about 2 percent in neighboring Bryan County. Now the couple’s cherry wood table in their sparsely decorated dining room is part dining table, part desk and part conference table for impromptu meetings with clients who feel comfortable enough just stopping by with questions or to drop off paperwork. “Clients say we are personable and approachable. We work on deals right here at this dining room table,” Kurtis says. “If clients have to come by the house to drop something off, they know where to find us any time of the day.” “We are not just there to get them into a house,” Rehan says. “We stay in contact with them after the sale. We have a relationship with them. We want them to see us as friends.”

What makes us successful is not the money we make, but a spiritual foundation that anchors us.

Kurtis—who also goes by “The Savannah Mortgage Man”—took a job as a loan officer with mortgage lender Homestar Financial in 2016. Since joining the firm, he has gained a faithful clientele of repeat and recommended customers who want to work with him because of his part-friend, part-disciplinarian, tough-love approach to successfully getting a mortgage. “For me, it’s simple. If you follow the plan and let me tell you what to do, you’ll get a mortgage,” Kurtis says. “You just have to follow the plan.” This strategic approach is important, Kurtis says, because home purchasing can be very frustrating and unfair. “You can have a client with little

collateral who can walk into a car dealership and buy a $50,000 car, but that same client can’t get into a house. Nothing has changed. They have the same income, the same credit score, the same everything, but we can’t get them in a house,” he says. Giving Family Business Another Try For the past four years, Rehan has worked as an agent with Rawls Realty, a Pooler-based real estate firm. Once again—with lessons learned from their previous business attempt—the McNeils are working together. If Kurtis gets calls about a mortgage, he will refer the buyer to Rehan if they need a real estate agent. Conversely, if Rehan is working with a client, she will refer the client to her husband to assist with financing.

Making the Process Pain Free Stephen Crowley estimates he met with Rehan 11 times as part of his homebuying process. At 25 years old, the HVAC specialist has purchased two homes and sold one—using the McNeils and following their advice. “I was of the mindset that I didn’t want to pay someone else’s mortgage. I wanted something that was mine,” Crowley says. “They made the process pain free.” Crawley is now looking to build a home. “I plan on using the McNeils until they stop doing this work,” he jokes. Crowley is one of many of the McNeil’s success stories in their second attempt to work together after more than two decades. In addition to managing successful businesses that generate millions in sales and raising two daughters, the McNeils have added foster parenting to their busy schedules. The couple have been fostering two siblings since April. Rehan says they are handling everything because they’ve got it down now through learning how to respect each other understanding their individual lanes and boundaries, and their spiritual grounding. “What makes us successful is not the money we make, but a spiritual foundation that anchors us in knowing that what we are doing is bigger than us,” Rehan says. n

7 TIPS FOR COUPLES WHO WORK TOGETHER Guidant Financial, a small business financing company that helps start-up businesses, offers these tips to couples working or considering working together. • LEARN TO COMMUNICATE WELL. Just as the foundation of a strong marriage is good communication, the backbone of a solid working relationship with your spouse is being able to convey your thoughts, feelings, and perspectives so you can remain on the same page. • IDENTIFY COMMON GOALS. Having shared goals can be a key factor to establishing a good working relationship for couples. By spending time envisioning your future and creating a list of both short-and longterm goals, it can ease challenges that arise along the way while keeping you and your partner on the same page. • WORK TO YOUR STRENGTHS. While it’s inevitable that business owners will have to perform tasks they don’t enjoy at some point, it shouldn’t be a regular occurrence. Both you and your spouse

should enjoy the work you do. That means leveraging your strengths to do the work you enjoy and hiring others to take care of tasks you don’t enjoy or don’t excel at. • ASSIGN OWNERSHIP. Some married couples may also find it useful to assign responsibilities so they each have ownership over specific roles. This ensures all duties are taken care of and may reduce friction that can occur when too many people try to accomplish the same thing. • HAVE REGULAR CHECK-INS. No matter what approach you take to assigning responsibilities, it’s always important to have regular check-ins with your significant other for both businessrelated items personal matters. • RESPECT EACH OTHER. Respect plays a big role in any successful marriage,

and it’s even more important for couples that own a business together. Differences in working style can be a major contributing factor to conflict. However, if you take the time to understand how your partner works, you’ll be well on your way to harmony at work and home. • CARVE OUT ALONE TIME. One of the most sought-after benefits of owning your own business is flexibility. But some married couples who own a business fall prey to workaholism and leave little time to reconnect with each other. The most successful working couples remember to schedule time for themselves, whether it’s as simple as dinner together once a week (or a getaway with no work allowed. Having a strong personal connection with each other will only make your working relationship easier.

LENNY SANSONE: Entrepreneur Brings The Growth Coach to the Greater Savannah Region

L

I’ve been a business owner and I know what it’s like...I know what it takes to build a company in a sustainable, balanced way.

enny Sansone has owned a business, been a personal trainer and worked with businesses through his experience in insurance. Now Sansone is combining those skills to serve business leaders in his community and pursue his own entrepreneurial dream with his new business—The Growth Coach of Greater Savannah. The Growth Coach is the largest provider of affordable group coaching workshops in the nation. They also offer leadership training and one-on-one coaching for sales professionals, managers, management teams, self-employed professionals and more. Their approach follows three industry-leading series—their Foundational Series, Fundamental Series and Fast Forward Series. Sansone works with clients in Rincon, Pooler, Savannah and the surrounding areas. “I’ve been a business owner and I know what it’s like. I understand the struggles, I’ve made the mistakes and I know what it takes to build a company in a sustainable, balanced way. I’m looking forward to using my unique set of skills to make a difference here in my community,” Sansone said. Sansone was born on an Air Force Base in Spain and grew up with a veteran and entrepreneur father. He’s the oldest of eight children and knew he wanted to follow in his father’s entrepreneurial footsteps when he was 16 years old. In the early 2000s, he opened a watch repair company and then became a personal trainer before changing gears to work in insurance. “I opened my own watch repair company because I knew I needed to do something to improve my future. Within the first six months, I realized I knew how to fix watches really well, but nothing about running a business. On the surface it looked successful, but after two years my dream became a nightmare. I personally grew a lot through that experience; and I decided I wanted to change lives instead of watch batteries, so I got into personal training. This turned out to be another valuable learning experience, but it never really fed my passion. I took a job selling insurance and, it clicked. While I was getting paid

to sell insurance, I did a lot of business consulting with my clients and I really enjoyed it. That’s what drew me to open my own coaching business and to become a Growth Coach,” Sansone said. He started working with clients in early 2021, but Sansone found he needed both his own knowledge as well as materials, collateral, business supports and a plan. That’s what brought him to The Growth Coach. As a Growth Coach, Sansone is certified in The Strategic Mindset coaching process, which adheres to the standards, practices and policies that the International Coaching Federation has outlined in their Code of Professional Standards and Ethics. The company’s landmark Strategic Mindset Process© is so

effective that it comes with a money-back guarantee. “The Growth Coach is unique because it’s not just about trying to go into someone’s business and fix something. It’s about working with clients like a coach to help them grow and find success on their own path. I’m looking forward to combining that system and mindset with my own experience,” Sansone said.

The Morris family’s next project is continuing to develop 40 acres they own in Guyton where they plan to create a family neighborhood. They have been clearing and working on the property, and this year they are going to start building a house there. Bobby and his brother Doug and nephew Logan have been doing much of the land clearing and development themselves. They will construct a new race shop, pond, and party barn. As DeeDee says: “Bobby can make, build, or do anything. He enjoys a challenge and is very handy.” The Morris family is dedicated to each other, to their customers and to their community. “We love living and working in Effingham County,” says DeeDee, “and we love being a family business!” n

Darrell Dasher grew up in the Sand Hill area, so managing the Rincon office of Yates-Astro really is “home” for him. He gives back to his hometown by officiating sports events for all age groups in and around Effingham County. His influence goes beyond our area through his involvement as a Shriner and a Mason. Shriner Hospitals for children never charge for their services, a blessing that is the result of the work of Darrell and many others. The Children’s Home in Macon is an outgrowth of his volunteer work as well. Darrell considers it a form of “giving back” to his hometown by protecting area homes and businesses as a pest control professional with Yates-Astro. It is hometown people like Darrell Dasher who have made Yates-Astro, a family owned local business, the largest pest control provider in the region.

JASON COUNSELMAN: Chick-fil-A Franchise Brings Family Home Jason Counselman, restaurant operator and franchise owner of Chickfil-A Rincon is proud to be part of the Effingham community of small business owners. Supporting local businesses is very important to him and he appreciates the community’s support of his restaurant. “People may think we are simply part of a large chain but in reality, this is a familyowned local business with deep roots in our community,” says Jason, “We live here, we work here, and we raise our children here because this is our home.” Jason was born in Michigan to an Air Force family that was transferred around the country a bit, eventually ending up at Robins Air Force Base in middle Georgia, where his mother retired from the Air Force and the family stayed. He started working for a Chick-fil-A franchise in 1998 while still in high school. After high school Jason went to college in Pensacola, Florida, where he met his wife, Hannah, who grew up in Claxton. ”We were two Georgia kids who met in college in Florida” says Jason. Jason started working for Chick-fil-A in their corporate division right out of college in 2005, and after three years on the corporate side he opened his first franchise in 2008 in Davenport, Iowa. In 2012 he opened a new Chick-fil-A franchise in

Peoria, Illinois, and in 2019 he opened the Rincon restaurant. Now a family of four, Jason, Hannah and their two children, Juliet (12) and Jackson (10) were overjoyed to make the move to Georgia. “All our family is still here,” says Jason, “which was a big part of why we chose to open the business in Rincon. Being around our extended family, especially having our children be part of their grandparents lives and vice versa, has been wonderful.” Southern Hospitality “We love Effingham and Effingham loves Chick-fil-A!” says Jason. “The city was easy to work with and helpful when we were building the restaurant. We received a very warm welcome.” He says he brought four managers with him from the Midwest and “they had heard me use the phrase ‘Southern Hospitality’ but didn’t understand until they were here in Georgia and really learned what that meant.” The Rincon restaurant employs a large number of local people, anywhere from 100 to 150 workers contributing positively to the local employment picture. Jason says he appreciates his team members, “We couldn’t do it without each and every one of them,”

and although the worker shortage has been a challenge, overall, the business is doing very well. Jason wants customers to know their inside dining room is open, “We are open for inside dining, drive thru and food delivery. You can order at the counter and by using our mobile app, which is an easy way to limit contact with employees and have food delivered straight to your dining table.” Past events such as “Daddy Daughter Date Night” were a tremendous success, but plans for indoor dining room events, and using their new food trailer, are on pause. They have been participating in outdoor community events like parades and look forward to resuming indoor events soon. Family Fun The family enjoys being outdoors, visiting beaches, and spending time together. Jason says, “This is our home. We’re here forever.”
