Melissa McBride Stille of Stille-DeWitt Health Brokerage, LLC

Providers - Deductions - HMO-PPO - Medicaid - Medicare - CHIP - Premiums

You may not know what any of these terms mean but there is someone who does—licensed insurance agent and health care broker Melissa McBride Stille. With over 15 years in the health insurance industry, she is your best ally in obtaining health insurance that works best for you and your family.

“There is a lot of information out there and it can be confusing,” says Melissa. “As your local agent, together, we can look at your needs and simplify the process of signing up for health insurance.”

Because she is local, Melissa has a true understanding of her community. And being local means she can get to know you and be available for face-to-face interactions. You can meet in person, get answers via text, send her an email that gets answered quicklywhatever works for you. Try doing that at a big company with an 800 number! You never have to yell “Customer Service” into the phone because the person who picks it up is Melissa!

Melissa now has two office locations to better serve her clients. “I am opening up a second location on Laurel St, the main street that runs through Springfield, which will be my second office in Effingham County. My Rincon office is inside of DeWitt Insurance Agency, which is where I originally purchased the health insurance department to become owner of my own agency.” says Melissa. Both locations are by appointment only at this time. “Once both offices are fully operational, I will be at the new Springfield location on designated days and at the Rincon office on others, in addition to working from home.”

Health insurance is both vitally important and complex. As your agent, Melissa will explain the basic components of health insurance such as premiums, deductibles, policy limits, exclusions etc. All of these greatly impact both your care and the cost.

As your agent, Melissa:

• takes the time to understand your needs.

• Works with you directly, one on one.

• Provides services free of charge to you.

• Provides personalized recommendations.

• Help you enroll in qualified health programs.

• Reviews your health plan annually.

When comparing plans, even with the same insurance company, there is a lot to consider such as deductibles, premiums, provider networks, and the difference between HMOs and PPOs. Another important issue is prescription coverage, which varies widely from plan to plan. Melissa states, “I know many clients are understandably concerned with cost but the best insurance for you is not necessarily the cheapest. When we look at plans together, we will consider all the costs related to the insurance, as well as what you are actually getting for your money.”

Melissa says it is important to prepare ahead of time for any life changes that affect your health insurance, such as retirement. “Don’t wait to start! You need to prepare three months in advance for life/insurance changes. Contact me and we can go over the timeline, so you are ready at the right time.” The same goes for open marketplace deadlines- call Melissa and get on track in advance.

Melissa gives every client her cell number - it is even in all of her advertising so that everyone, even future clients, can feel comfortable reaching out to her. She lives locally, now with two offices in Effingham County, but for the quickest response give her a call on her cell 912-239-7119.

“Being an independent health insurance broker means I work for you- the client. I look forward to getting your call and helping you determine your best health care options.”

A Legacy of Dedication to Our Area

Honesty. Integrity. Dedication to giving customers the very best product and service possible. Call it old school. Some—most—say it has disappeared. To those we say, meet Mike Cannon. There are two things you can count on—the quality of a roof from Michael’s Roofing, and the word of founder and owner Mike Cannon.

“I am most proud of my faith,” says Mike, “In my belief in Jesus Christ because we wouldn’t be where we are without him, and other than that, I am most proud of my word. My daddy taught me you are only as good as your word. If you can’t keep that, what else have you got?”

Michael’s Roofing is the leading residential and commercial roofing service provider throughout Savannah, Georgia, coastal South Carolina and much of the surrounding areas. Mike stands squarely behind his company’s work. In fact, his name is on every roof. “When I was new at it, I would take chalk and write ‘Michael’s Roofing’ on the black felt.”

your specific situation. Customers deal directly with a team member, from the initial estimate to the completed roof. Homeowners are treated as if they were Mike’s own family. From new roofs to skylights, the work will be done correctly, in a timely manner, resulting in a safe and dry home.

Being the only local roofer who is certified by Owens Corning, GAF and CertainTeed guarantees you superior product quality, top-notch workmanship,

Choosing a Licensed Roofer

Mike wants people to be cautious when hiring a roofer. Even if they don’t choose him, he urges customers to select a licensed and insured company. “We just want to reach out to our community and warn against unlicensed out of town roofers posing as locals,” he says, “Anyone with an ID can walk in the door and buy a business license, which is not the same as being a licensed roofer and usually they don’t have workers comp or liability insurance.”

I am most proud of my faith—in my belief in Jesus Christ...and other than that, I am most proud of my word. “ “

Today the company has the roofing felt printed with their name on it. When you have a roof from Michael’s Roofing, they are proud to claim it.

A Local Business

Being a locally owned, family-run business means the dedicated staff at Michael’s Roofing knows you, knows your needs, and works with you to address

and strong warranties. In addition to craftsmanship, Michael’s Roofing offers a wide selection of roofing choices, from shingles and slate to metal, in a variety of aesthetically pleasing colors that will enhance the value of your property. Their commercial work encompasses everything from warehouses to large buildings. Michael’s Roofing wants your business, but more importantly they want your satisfaction. After decades in business, they have established long term relationships with their clients who inevitably become repeat customers. Their many referrals from existing clients are their ultimate compliment.

Licensed roofers carry insurance coverage such as liability insurance and workers’ compensation insurance. This protects the customer against any liability for costs related to workers damaging your property or getting injured on the job. Mike advises customers to insist on seeing insurance documentation. “You can put anything you want in an ad, so companies claim 20 years experience, which they usually don’t have,” he says.

Because Michael’s Roofing is a licensed roofing contractor you can trust they have up to date knowledge in the best practices in roofing installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement. They will get the work done right the first time, something you can’t say about unlicensed roofers.

Community Ties

Being an integral part of their community is crucial to Mike’s business and work ethic. “We have been here

www.EFFINGHAMMAGAZINE.com | June/July 2024 11

all our lives. Grew up here, started our business here. Heck, my kids graduated from Effingham county schools.”

After more than 40 years, Mike still gets up on a roof and swings a hammer. He says, “I get up on roofs because every roof is as important to me as the first roof. I get out there and work with my crew. I believe if you tell a homeowner you are going to roof their house then you should show up to their house.”

The core crew at Michael’s Roofing has been with him a long time. “My crew, bless their hearts, I can’t say enough about them,” he says, “My personal crew has been with me since they were kids, some 20 to 25 years now.” They often perform the specialty and sheet metal craftsman work because, “I know they can do it and do it very well,” says Mike.

And it really is a family business. Mike’s wife Lisa worked alongside him in their home office for years until God sent Crystal. She became Mike’s right AND left hand. Her dedication and loyalty to Michael’s Roofing over the last 15 years has been a true blessing.

Today, Mike’s daughter Sheree and granddaughter Marissa work alongside her in the office as the business continues to grow.

Humble Beginnings and Hard Work

go at it again.” That was the grind six days a week for 18 years before he felt comfortable enough to ease up on the grueling schedule.

Mike’s advice for business owners: Keep your word. Honor your agreements. Be loyal to your crew. If you clock in and out or think of your business as a job, you won’t be successful. At the end of the day take care of the business and the business will take care of you.

Family Man

Mike’s family includes Lisa—his wife of 27 years—3 daughters and 9 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mike jokes, “I used to like my children and grandchildren but now I have a great grandbaby who is my favorite!”

A close family, his daughter Brandy went to work with him from a young age. “I would take her to work with me, put a rope around her waist and tie her off to a tree or chimney so she wouldn’t wander off and she would have a coloring book to keep her busy. Every morning she would stand by the truck ready to go.”

We strive to make the name Michael’s Roofing synonymous with exceptional quality, craftsmanship, and customer service. “

Hatch

Mike says his drive comes from his humble beginnings. “I came from poverty and didn’t want my kids and grandkids to go through what I did.” As a teenager he worked for his cousin’s company Cannon’s Roofing and Remodeling. “My cousin Jimmy would pick me up from school and I would pick up roofing trash. That was the first job I ever had that paid me money.”

He quickly learned on the job and at the young age of 21 he set off on his own. “I used my first name and started ‘Michael’s Roofing’. Pretty soon I was the fourth largest company in Savannah.”

Being a business owner meant Mike put in the long hours. “I used to get up at four AM and pick the crew up, work all day till pitch dark, and drive everybody home. Then I would work at home till midnight returning phone calls and putting together contracts. Get up in the morning and

You can’t talk about Michael’s Roofing, or Mike, without talking about his dog Hatch. The name derives from the roofing hammer tool, called a hatchet, but everyone knows him as Hatch.

“He’s our mascot,” says Mike. Hatch has been on plenty of roofs himself, including one memorable day where he slid off of a pollen covered roof, only to bounce up and play frisbee with the neighbors next door. He goes to work every day, sitting in the front seat of Mike’s truck. And Hatch gets his own breakfast at Chick-fil-A every day—a breakfast sandwich and sweet tea in a pup cup.

And rumor has it that Hatch sleeps in bed alongside Mike and wife Lisa. Granddaughter Marissa says, “He would share a bowl with that dog!” Mike laughs and says, “Customers know me as ‘the man with the dog!’”

Today he spends most of his free time outdoors working around the house or hunting and fishing at his farm in Sylvania. He and Lisa enjoy riding their motorcycles or jet skis and spending time with their grandkids.

Legacy

Knowing they have helped their community means the world to Mike and Lisa. Lisa says, “Over the past four decades, homeowners have been sending us handwritten letters, thanking us for taking care of them and their roofing needs. Every letter is kept in a file, and every personal note copied and saved in scrapbooks.” Handwritten letters have now evolved to online reviews which are cherished just as deeply, printed and saved just the same. This is done in hopes that the future generation of Michael’s Roofing understands the true meaning of honesty, integrity, and dedication

The Bible verse Proverbs 22 (KJV) verse—A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches—is very meaningful to Mike because, “we strive to make the name Michael’s Roofing synonymous with exceptional quality, craftsmanship, and customer service. Everything we do— installing your roof, working with your insurance company on storm claims, and the behind the scenes of our business— reflects that goal.”

Amber Monroe

Using Aquaponics & Vertical Farming to Grow Fresh Food

20 June/July 2024 | www.EFFINGHAMMAGAZINE.com

Sometimes our dreams lead us on a journey far away from where we started. Georgia native Amber Monroe grew up in Meldrim, Effingham County, but always dreamed of traveling to distant places. Following her interest in farming, she became a student at Georgia Southern University. After graduating from the GSU Biology department she taught agriculture at South Effingham for a year before going on a spring break trip to Iceland.

She says, “I came here for a visit in 2017 and fell in love with the country. Something about it felt like home. In 2018 I moved here to work on my MSc at Hólar University in the Department of Aquaculture and Fish Biology. Most of my undergraduate courses focused on plant biology, and since I wanted a career in aquaponics, I thought it would be helpful to study fish biology.”

After receiving her master’s degree at Hólar University in 2021, Amber opened her own business called Isponica in Hólar, Iceland. The company utilized vertical farming and aquaponics to provide fresh greens to the local market. Vertical farming optimizes growing space by using total building height, not just horizontal space, to grow more crops and aquaponics uses the nutrient-rich water from fish tanks as fertilizer for the plants. By implementing these ideas, Isponica is garnering a lot of positive attention for its modern sustainable farming practices. We recently caught up with Amber to talk about her passion for Iceland and Isponica.

What were your first impressions of Iceland?

I had no idea what to think when I first visited Iceland—the landscape was so different from anywhere I had visited! On my first trip, I hiked a lot and explored nature, mostly in the southern area of the country. There was so much to see. I came on my own and I felt very safe here, too.

How is the weather- especially for someone used to a warm climate like South Georgia?

I first came to Iceland in the summer so I didn’t have an idea of how winter could be here. But, I love the cold, snow and northern lights during the winter months. When we do have winter storms, it’s nice to hunker down inside and watch movies or read. Winter has its own peacefulness here. Of course, driving here in winter storms is a totally different story! It’s best to stay at home. The summer months are great for adventuring—you never run out of daylight and areas of the country inaccessible during the winter can be visited in the summer. Most of the sheep are free to roam and migratory birds arrive for their Icelandic summer vacation.

Is language a barrier? Are you learning Icelandic?

Many people in Iceland speak English very well, so language isn’t usually a barrier. I can read the Icelandic language okay and I am still learning to speak it, so my friends often help me. I’m hard of hearing, so while I can often start a conversation in Icelandic, I tend to get a little lost when I don’t hear and miss a few words. That’s okay - I’ll just keep taking classes and practicing! Listening to Icelandic music helps, too.

Where do you live currently? Have you been able to explore the country?

I live in northern Iceland, in the municipality of Skagafjörður. I love it. In many ways it reminds me of Georgia because of the farms and the countryside. I have been around the country a few times, but there are still quite a few places left to see. My goal is to go visit the Westman Islands and explore the Westfjords more, especially the more remote areas.

www.EFFINGHAMMAGAZINE.com | June/July 2024 21
“Through every step of Ísponica’s development, there have been many people willing to jump in and provide advice and help with the setup.”

How did Isponica get started?

I always thought aquaponics was fascinating and I knew I wanted to have my own aquaponic farm one day. When I was graduating in 2021, I thought it would be a good time to start the company so I could build it into my future plans. Here in Iceland, we have access to different kinds of renewable energy, such as geothermal, and this helps with aquaponics production. We’re also an island that needs to import quite a lot of its food since we aren’t currently producing enough of our own, and I thought that Ísponica could increase our local vegetable production.

Are you producing products or in the startup phase?

I’ve been producing microgreens since we started in 2021, so we were able to get up and running fairly quickly. I focused mostly on microgreens since it only takes a week or two to grow and then I can bring it to market. It’s been small-scale the last few years so I would say we are still in the startup stage and now planning to increase the production this summer. We’re in the process of setting up in a new facility which has great potential for growth and we’re planning to grow more microgreens, lettuce, herbs, edible flowers and mushrooms. At the moment we’re raising goldfish and tilapia but I’m hoping to run some Arctic char trials later this year. We aren’t harvesting fish for now and just focusing on building up the production.

Did you repurpose existing structures for Isponica ?

The original location of Ísponica was in a former barn in Hólar that used to house cows. The basement of the barn was later used as a public aquarium and this is where Ísponica was set up in 2021. It worked out perfectly because our production uses fish and many of the aquariums were still usable. On the other side of the barn is our local pub and brewery, Bjórsetur Íslands, which is where students and locals drop by for a beer on the weekends.

Have you since moved?

As of April 2024, Ísponica moved to a nearby village called Hofsós. We moved into part of a former fish factory that has been mostly empty the last few years and used a storage for RVs and cars during the winter months. I’m excited about the factory because a lot of people in the municipality have a connection to it—either they worked in it or know someone who did. It’s been fun hearing different stories from the past and I’ll be sure to include the factory’s history in Ísponica’s future.

The great thing about the new location in Hofsós is that it creates opportunities for agri-tourism, where visitors can come by for tours and sample our products. In the future, we hope to add a small café on the other side of the building. The building is by the sea and overlooks the fjord and the island called Drangey. It’s a beautiful view.

Isponica is generating a lot of interest—have people been supportive?

I’ve honestly been humbled by the support. Through every step of Ísponica’s development, there have been many people willing to jump in and provide advice and help with the setup. Living in the countryside of Iceland, everyone acknowledges the importance of keeping things going and we try our best to support local businesses. There are also a lot of opportunities for people trying to start a business here, whether it’s training programs and accelerators, business and innovation development offices, grants and special loans. We really try to network and promote each other so we can all succeed.

What do you miss about Georgia?

I’ve been living in Iceland for almost 6 years now and every time I come back to Georgia for a visit, I see so many things that I appreciate more and more. I miss my family and friends the most—when you are only traveling back once a year (or even less) you realize how quickly kids grow up and people age. These visits are precious to me and I try to catch up with everyone as much as I can. On a different note, we rarely have thunderstorms and lightning here in Iceland, which is something I didn’t even realize I would miss until I moved here (or the sound of happy tree frogs after a summer storm). I also really like the ice cream here, but I have to say that I miss Ronnie’s milkshakes and Leopold’s Ice Cream on the summer days!

What is your favorite thing about Iceland?

One of my favorite things about Iceland is how small it is—you’ll find that most people have some connection to each other and you are likely to meet celebrities or politicians. A few years ago, former Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir was in our local pub in Hólar. When I saw her, my mind did not at all register that it was her until much later—because why would the Prime Minister be in our village pub, in rural northern Iceland? The chances of something like this happening in the US are much less likely, but it’s completely normal here in Iceland. Luckily I had the chance to meet her again when she and other members of Parliament came to visit Ísponica in 2023, but still— it’s funny to realize you never know who you’ll bump into at the pub!

What would you say to encourage someone with a dream?

It’s important to believe in your dreams so passionately that other people around you start to believe in them as much as you do. I think it’s necessary to surround yourself with people who will encourage, push and challenge you to pursue your dreams. It’s also okay if your dream changes over time—sometimes when you start, you realize that certain things aren’t working and you adapt. Be flexible, openminded and work hard. There are going to be days where you might feel discouraged or don’t feel like working on your goals, but staying disciplined and maintaining a routine will keep you moving forward. ■

EASY IDEAS TO STRETCH YOUR RETIREMENT BUDGET: Ways Seniors Can Save on Enjoyable Activities 26 June/July 2024 | www.EFFINGHAMMAGAZINE.com

Retirement may mean you have unlimited time to enjoy each day, but it doesn’t mean you have a budget to match. You probably already know staying active is essential for aging with grace, so instead of letting limited funds keep you at home, explore some ways you can enjoy your leisure time without breaking the bank.

Hit the Gym

Many fitness centers offer special rates and programs for older adults. Hitting the track or joining a group fitness class are easy ways to socialize while getting some exercise. The discounted membership is also an investment since staying fit is important for physical and mental health.

Enjoy Early Dinner Deals

You can still enjoy dining out occasionally, especially if you take advantage of lower-cost meals designed with older adults in mind. Many specials are for meals earlier in the day, which is consistent with a growing trend toward earlier dining.

According to Yelp, the number of people eating from 4-6 p.m. has grown 9% (up to 26% from 17% in 2019). Eating earlier promotes better digestion, and earlier meals are often lighter portions for smaller appetites. For example, Cracker Barrel’s Early Dinner Deals feature smaller portions served from 4-6 p.m. on weekdays. Menu items include a variety of homestyle favorites like chicken n’ dumplins, meatloaf, catfish and more.

Check Out the Library

Your local library is filled with hours of free entertainment, but it’s not just the kind you’ll find from getting a library card. You can undoubtedly find a book that covers any genre or interest you can name, but most local libraries also offer programming tailored to special interests and the sessions are typically offered for free or at a low cost. It’s an easy, affordable way to pick up a new skill, meet a favorite author, learn about a topic that intrigues you and more. Other resources to explore include your library’s DVD collection and internet access if you don’t have a computer at home.

Nurture

a Garden

Tending a garden may seem like a seasonal activity, but you can make it a year-round hobby. Researching and planning is a good way to carry your gardening enthusiasm into the cooler months and you can start seedlings indoors to extend your growing season. While you’re digging into this low-cost pastime, remember the results of your efforts, such as fresh fruits and veggies, can help cut your grocery costs, too.

Mind Your Money with DIY

Saving money at the grocery store is just one way you can make DIY projects work for you. There are dozens of other examples of ways you can put your skills and interests to use by passing time doing something you enjoy while benefiting your bank account.

If you like to tinker with cars, figure out what repairs you can handle yourself and avoid hefty service fees. Crafting and sewing might mean you have ready-made gifts for special occasions and a way to repair or repurpose damaged clothing instead of discarding it.

Ask About Discounts

You may be surprised by how many places offer discounts for older adults that they don’t readily advertise. In some cases, you’ll find the information on their website or signage, but other times, you may find it easier to just ask. When you’re booking an appointment or checking out, inquire about discounts for older adults, including any restrictions, age requirements, the amount of the discount and other pertinent details. Sometimes the discounts are offered on certain days or for specific services, or they may require you to join a loyalty club to access the discounts.

When dining out, many restaurants offer a variety of loyalty perks. Rewards members at Cracker Barrel can earn points, or “Pegs,” on qualifying restaurant and retail purchases. Members can also take advantage of bonus birthday, anniversary and surprise rewards throughout the year.

DR. MILLER BARGERON JR.

The Journey of a Successful Dreamer

Istill consider myself as a work in progress,” states Dr. Miller Bargeron, Jr., accomplished speaker, filmmaker, author, certified human behaviorist and mindset integration specialist. Miller and his wife Vikke have called Guyton home for some time now; the Savannah natives are the proud parents of three daughters: Kearsetyn, 23, Kennedy, 19 and Kerringtyn, 14.

The Journey

Miller’s phenomenal journey began many years ago while attending Beach High School. There, he developed an interest in public speaking under the mentorship of his football coach Charlie Smith, who served as an inspiration for the young man on and off the field.

“He pushed me to another level. He not only taught me football techniques and strategies; he challenged me. He led me on a journey of transformation. He was like a second father to me, and we’re good friends until this day,” Miller states.

Coach Smith turned the school’s entire football program around; he led the team to a 1988 championship with Miller as team captain. Moreover, Coach Smith encouraged Miller, a relatively shy kid, to speak at team engagements, including football banquets. Such experiences played a part in shaping Miller into the notable speaker he would become.

“That was the start of me coming out of my shell. That’s one of the main things I do for a living now. It’s nothing for me to do an impromptu speech,” he says.

Miller later attended Savannah State College, where he was privileged to meet Mrs. Swannie Richards during his freshman year. She initially served as Miller’s typing instructor; Mrs. Richards—like Coach Smith—became a strong mentor in his life, enlightening Miller on a lot of good business policies and principles while helping him prepare for life as a professional. She assisted Miller in obtaining a cooperative education (co-op) opportunity with the Social Security Administration during his junior year; he retired from the organization in 2021 following 30 years of successful service.

Miller recalls having little interest in reading earlier on in his life; he prayed that God would give him a true reading spirit. Thereafter, a lot changed.

“Everything shifted. To this day, I may read two or three books at the same time, whether Biblical, historical or inter-behavioral text, in order to sharpen the skills that I have,” he states.

Miller had always been a gifted writer. He co-authored his first book in 1995: To Redeem a Generation: AfricanAmerican Male Crisis.

“It was the favor of the Lord; God had His Hand on me the whole time as I stepped out in faith. At every level, God brought a mentor into my life,” Miller says.

God had His Hand on me the whole time as I stepped out in faith. At every level, God brought a mentor into my life “ “

After graduating from college, Miller enjoyed being a member of the New Generation Full Gospel Baptist Church, where he met Dr. Norris Darden, Jr. Under the mentorship of Dr. Darden, Miller began delving into studies in theology. Dr. Darden asked Miller to lead the church’s media ministry. Though Miller had little knowledge in that arena, he embraced the challenge. He became proficient in various forms of media—training videos, promotional videos and commercials.

“I found out that I had a gift for directing, producing and writing. I had the ability to do all of that. I would write church commercial scripts and produce certain elements,” he says.

Miller appreciates all the mentors that have enriched his life over the years.

Around that time, Miller met Arcelious “SiSi” Daniels, former lead guitarist for the group Sly and the Family Stone. SiSi had a true knack for editing and shooting for productions. The two decided to become business partners, alongside their wives (Vikke and SiSi’s wife Terri Daniels). They launched their first production company, Native Sun Productions, in the late 1990s. The company produced various training videos, television commercials and corporate promotional videos. Under Native Sun, Miller produced many short and long-form videos. However, he aspired to produce documentary films; he eventually did produce one: “Stubborn as a Mule.” The film’s goal was to “serve as a vehicle to repair the damage done in the Civil War and slavery era” by shining a light upon the reality of it all.

“We wanted to do something impactful … to have an honest conversation. We took a glance at history going back to the U.S. Civil War,” he states. The full-length film features several well-known personalities and takes viewers on a journey that details the severe challenges faced by many African-Americans throughout history.

Prior to the release of the documentary, Miller and SiSi had been asked to participate in a Q&A segment for the Black Policy Conference at Harvard University, where the keynote speaker was Debra Lee, former CEO of the Black Entertainment Television (BET) Network. The panel was moderated by Armstrong Williams, a South Carolina native and strong voice in U.S. politics who has strived to incorporate conservative principles and values into politically-based debates.

After gaining a distribution deal in 2010, “Stubborn as a Mule” was entered into various film festivals around the world. The documentary won several awards, including: Best Diaspora Documentary at the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) in Nigeria (2011); Best International Film for the Music Screen Awards in Birmingham, United Kingdom (2010); Best Film on Matters Relating to the Black Experience at the Black International Cinema in Berlin, Germany (2010); Award of Merit - Short Documentary for the Accolade Competition in the U.S. (2010).

“We were screened at 15 film festivals around the world,” Miller says. Miller, alongside his wife Vikke, eventually discontinued Native Sun Productions and launched We Came to Conquer Entertainment, LLC.

Miller had the opportunity to meet the late Larry “Gator” Rivers, former Harlem Globetrotter who also graduated from Beach High School. Rivers had learned of the success of

attended the school from the 1930s-1960s were interviewed. The piece, which is still in production, highlights several wellknown African-Americans who graduated from the school. Being renamed “Surviving Change: The Evolution of a Reconstruction Era African-American High School,” the documentary examines how the school survived various social and economic challenges, the impacts of the Freedmen's Bureau along with the school’s educational transitions during various periods, such as the Industrial Revolution or Jim Crow Era.

Speaker, Author, Publisher, Coach

In 2020, Miller wrote his second book: Journey of a Successful Dreamer, which was largely inspired by a speech Miller gave in Dumas, Arkansas at a Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration. Miller then wrote Journey of a Successful Dreamer Journal that takes its readers through the dream-fulfilling process detailed in the book. Miller self-published the book and journal after creating his own publishing company, Scribe Tree Publishing, with Vikke.

Miller is an executive coach and trainer who has developed core leadership teachings for businesses: “The UNcommon Leader” and “Arrow-Dynamic Leadership.” Miller aids professionals in areas of leadership development and organizational culture development. He, too, is a certified human behaviorist; he offers professional training that utilizes the concepts of understanding human

Miller, a mindset integration specialist, is managing partner and co-founder with Vikke of MI Global, a consulting, training

“Mindset integration is a process of introducing innovative and enhanced knowledge to an individual’s thought process. MI Global helps individuals and organizations achieve greater levels of efficiency, productivity and profitability through human behavior-based personal, professional and organizational development.” MI Global provides beneficial leadership training in numerous areas, including: team building, communication skills and relationship building, to name a few.

Accomplishment Snapshot

Along with obtaining various degrees, including a Doctorate in Christian Leadership and Management, Miller has earned numerous honors: World Peace Ambassador and Global Leadership Award from iChange Nations, Honorary Doctor of Arts & Entertainment from United Graduate College and Seminary International, Savannah Black Heritage Festival Honoree and several other distinctions.

Miller is excited to complete his next book: The UNcommon Leader’s Perspective: The Foundational Dynamics of Creating Compliant

“I would definitely credit all my success to my faith in Miller is thankful for Vikke; he is convinced that he would not be where he is today without her love, support and encouragement throughout his journey. Long ago, Miller realized a deeper calling in his life. Over the past 25 years, he has served in a variety of leadership roles in ministry. He was ordained as a minister in 2013 and commissioned as an apostle in 2015. Further, Miller and Vikke established Kingdom Bible Equipping and Training (KBET), a virtual Bible study group. Miller Bargeron, Jr. is looking forward to bright days ahead. This successful dreamer’s journey is far from over. ■

YOUR SMILE IS YOUR BEST ASSET Why You Should Take Oral Health Seriously

Imagine your smile as your personal business card. It’s often the first thing people notice about you, and it has the power to leave a lasting impression. But a beautiful smile is more than just cosmetic; it’s a reflection of your overall health. Here’s why taking care of your oral health is one of the best investments you can make for your well-being.

The Health Connection

Did you know that poor oral health can lead to serious health problems beyond your mouth? Studies have shown that gum disease is linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and even Alzheimer’s disease. Bacteria from your mouth can enter your bloodstream and cause inflammation in other parts of your body. By maintaining good oral hygiene, you’re not just protecting your teeth and gums but also safeguarding your heart and brain.

The Confidence Booster

A healthy smile can significantly boost your confidence. According to the American Academy of Cosmetic

Dentistry, 48% of adults believe a smile is the most memorable feature after meeting someone. If you’re selfconscious about your teeth, you might avoid smiling or speaking up in social and professional settings. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups can prevent tooth decay, bad breath, and gum disease, ensuring that you can flash your pearly whites with confidence.

Preventive Care is Cost-Effective

Think of your oral care routine as preventive maintenance for your car. Regular check-ups and cleanings are far less expensive than major repairs. The American Dental Association estimates that every dollar spent on preventive dental care can save $8 to $50 in restorative and emergency treatments. By investing a small amount of time and money in daily brushing and flossing, you can avoid painful and costly dental procedures down the road.

Tips for a Healthy Smile

Maintaining your oral health doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are a few simple tips to keep your teeth and gums in top shape:

• Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste for at least two minutes.

• Floss daily to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth.

• Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and professional cleanings.

• Limit sugary foods and drinks, which can contribute to tooth decay.

• Quit smoking, as it significantly increases the risk of gum disease and oral cancer.

The Bottom Line

Your oral health is a window to your overall health. By taking simple steps to care for your teeth and gums, you can prevent serious health problems, save money, and boost your confidence. Don’t wait for a dental emergency to start taking your oral health seriously. Make it a priority today, and your smile will thank you for years to come.

ALDERMAN HOUSE UPDATE

We follow up on a story we ran in last year’s Effingham Magazine Home & Garden issue. We check in with the Aldermans on the renovation of their family home.

Welcome home

After an extensive 18-month renovation the Alderman House is now complete. In partnership with Barton (Barty) and Joyce Alderman, Jimmy and Dee Moncrief (Moncrief Renovations) worked to bring the historical house up to current standards without compromising its charm and character. The house is equipped with new plumbing, electric, windows, insulation and a modern HVAC system. To accommodate these components the house was raised four feet.

“It was a challenge matching the original wood and brick on the exterior,” says Jimmy Moncrief, “but we were able to use old bricks on the new addition to the original fireplaces.”

The interior is a tasteful combination of new and old. New drapes, new chandeliers, but original heart pine floors, refinished to their earliest beauty. The existing fireplaces were designed for coal burning so they were converted to gas and rebricked to current safety codes. Jimmy says the toughest challenge was raising the foundation and the most rewarding challenge was updating the living room. The original fireplace and wood walls were retained to keep the historical character.

“It’s essentially a music room with a baby grand piano and an antique organ, no television. It feels like a completely different era when you are in the room.”

“The Aldermans made it easy by having the vision and knowing what they wanted. We were excited to make that happen for them, and we accomplished it within the timeline of 18 months that we promised,“ says Jimmy. Enhancing— not eliminating—the house’s character was key to this loving expansion and renovation.

As Dee says, “The renovation is simply another chapter of the house’s story. The house is now a legacy that will last forever.”

Habitat for Humanity of Effingham County Now Accepting Applications for Prospective Homeowners

Buying a home is a memorable milestone for many people because of the benefits it provides. There are the cosmetic aspects like painting a child’s room in his or her favorite color, being able to hang photos on the wall or planting a garden. There’s also the financial advantages of building equity and generational wealth and stable mortgage payments rather than increasing rent. The biggest rewards come from the stability and security of having a place to call home.

A study by Habitat for Humanity of Georgia showed that 74% of Habitat homeowners were able to save more money for emergencies, college funds and retirement. They are also spending more time with their families and feeling optimistic about the future.

More than 20 local families have found a pathway to homeownership through Habitat for Humanity of Effingham County since the affiliate was incorporated in 1995. Here’s what some of them have had to say:

“I’m thankful for Habitat being able to provide for our community for younger generations that are striving to have a home. It’s harder in today’s economy to be a homeowner, but with Habitat anything’s possible,” says Brittney Roper, Habitat homeowner since 2018.

“For someone to say ‘Hey, you don’t have to pack up and move again,’ you can’t put a price on that,” says Lauren Alvarado, Habitat homeowner since 2017.

“You’re not only doing it because it’s yours; you’re also helping the community,” April says. “It’s a great feeling to know that you can look back in 15-20 years and know that you built this house,” says April Wise, Habitat homeowner since 2023.

Applications are now open for families to partner with Habitat for Humanity and utilize its unique pathway to homeownership. Part of what makes the Habitat journey to homeownership special is the emphasis on “sweat equity,” where future homeowners complete at least 250 hours of volunteer work on the build site or at the ReStore.

Applicants must have lived or worked in Effingham County for at least one year

and be employed for at least one year at the same job. They must demonstrate a need for housing; examples of this include living in overcrowded or unhealthy housing and/or spending more than 30% of their monthly gross income on rent. Income must be no more than 80% of Effingham County’s median income: for a family of four, the maximum income is $52,980.

How to Apply

Complete the online application at habitatec.org and upload the following documents:

• Copies of last three months pay stubs for each applicant (also for anyone 18 or older earning income, who will live in the home)

• Copies of the last two months bank statements of each applicant

• Copies of the last two years of completed and signed tax returns & W2’s of each applicant

• Copies of last 12 months of utility bills, such as Georgia Power and water bills

• Copies of a driver’s license or state identification card for each applicant

• Copies of social security cards for each family member/ resident

• Copy of DD-214 form (if applicable)

• Copies of divorce decree/ separation papers (if applicable)

• Verification of SSI/Disability for all applicable household members (if applicable)

• Court-ordered child support or alimony income (if applicable)

After completing the application, contact the Habitat for Humanity office at (912) 826-6433 to set up an appointment with CEO Jimmy Rutland and submit an application fee of $50 per applicant.

“We strive to make homeownership attainable for our partner families,” says Rutland. “We’re happy to guide families through the application process and help them achieve their dreams.”

GARDENING TIPS FOR MAY & JUNE From Blackcreek Nursery & Garden

As we transition into the gardening months of May and June, your todo list for the garden is brimming with tasks. The threat of frost and freezes is long gone, making it the perfect time for your garden to flourish with color and life.

Gardenias, Hydrangeas, Butterfly Bushes, Lantana, and an array of plants are now blooming, attracting butterflies, bees, and dragonflies. While the warmer weather brings forth blooms, it also brings challenges such as damaging insects, heat stress, and weed growth. Here are some valuable tips to ensure your garden looks its best with minimal effort!

Planting

Despite the approaching summer, it’s never too late to plant in southeast Georgia, as long as you focus on three crucial factors: water, mulch, and nutrients.

Watering Needs: During the warmer months, plants require more water. Regularly monitor both newly planted and established plants. Supplement with irrigation as needed, ensuring all sprayers or drip lines are functional. If hand watering, ensure water reaches the plant roots effectively.

Mulch: A natural mulch like straw, bark, or leaves offers numerous benefits. It beautifies the garden, suppresses weeds, maintains root moisture, cools the soil, and enriches the soil with essential nutrients. Avoid synthetic mulches as they lack these advantages.

Nutrients: Provide your plants with a balanced diet by using the right fertilizer based on their specific requirements. Grass fertilizers are not good for bedding plants! Liquid fertilizers require regular applications, while granular fertilizers offer immediate or extended benefits. Always follow label instructions to prevent over-fertilization.

Weeds in the Garden

Weeds are a significant threat to garden health, competing for resources and potentially causing harm. Natural weed control methods, such as generous mulching and using biodegradable materials like cardboard, are recommended over herbicides. If opting for chemical control, choose organic products carefully and follow label instructions to minimize harm to plants, pets, and pollinators. Even organics can

be harmful to pollinators if not used according to the label.

Insects

With summer comes a variety of insects, both beneficial and harmful. Different insects require specific control methods. Beneficial insects such as ladybugs and dragonflies play a vital role in pest control and should be preserved. For pest control, consider natural solutions like oils or insecticidal soaps that are safe for plants and pets.

It is important before you spray any chemical that you know for sure what you’re spraying for. You may think you’re spraying for an insect when you may have a fungal problem. If you don’t know, ask a professional.

Pruning

May and June are ideal for pruning shrubs, trees, and plants, allowing them to recover before the colder months. It’s essential to know which plants should not be pruned after June, such as those that bloom on last year’s growth. Here are a few plants that you don’t want to prune after June.

• Old-fashioned hydrangeas bloom on last year’s growth so prune after they bloom but not after June. Panicle hydrangeas always bloom on the current year’s growth, so those are ok.

• Blueberries and some blackberries produce berries on last year’s growth, so you can prune lightly but not heavily after June.

• Camellias are another plant you don’t want to prune after June. They start to set bud in midsummer and pruning them now can keep them from blooming this next season.

Irrigation Evaluation

As summer approaches, it’s crucial to assess your irrigation system. Ensure timers are working correctly, replace faulty components, and plan watering schedules to provide adequate hydration to your plants.

By following these tips, you can maintain a thriving garden throughout May and June, filled with colorful blooms, buzzing pollinators, and healthy plant growth.

Happy gardening! ■

More Than Pest Control

Darrell Dasher Branch Manager, Rincon Office

Darrell Dasher grew up in the Sand Hill area, so managing the Rincon office of Yates-Astro really is “home” for him. He gives back to his hometown by officiating sports events for all age groups in and around Effingham County.

His influence goes beyond our area through his involvement as a Shriner and a Mason. Shriner Hospitals for children never charge for their services, a blessing that is the result of the work of Darrell and many others. The Children’s Home in Macon is an outgrowth of his volunteer work as well.

Darrell considers it a form of “giving back” to his hometown by protecting area homes and businesses as a pest control professional with Yates-Astro. It is hometown people like Darrell Dasher who have made Yates-Astro, a family owned local business, the largest pest control provider in the region.

RELIEVING PAIN RESTORING LIVES . .

GA

After two sleepless days and nights of debilitating abdominal pain, Gwen visited the emergency room at Candler Hospital. Dr. Emma Walker, the on-call surgeon, identified biliary dyskinesia, a disfunction of the gallbladder. Dr. Walker then scheduled a robotic cholecystectomy to remove the gallbladder.

The procedure was performed using the innovative da Vinci Xi robot in conjunction with indocyanine green (ICG)—a solution that allows the robot to best visualize the patient’s biliary anatomy. This complex, yet minimally-invasive surgery allowed Gwen to recover quickly so she could get back to yoga, biking and walking her beloved Prissy.

“St. Joseph’s/Candler provides me with the team and technology I need to provide the best outcomes for my patients. We’ve relieved Gwen of her acute pain and she feels fabulous again!” – Dr. Walker

“THAT’S WHY I CHOOSE ST. JOSEPH’S/CANDLER”
