I

sn’t it amazing how life evolves? We are celebrating the 13th Anniversary of Effingham Magazine and it is my first official issue as owner and publisher. When the opportunity to take the reins presented itself several months ago, it was a no brainer for me. I’ve always had a passion for magazines. As a kid, I would cut out pages from my favorite from magazines–categorizing and organizing the cutouts into folders of “best advertisement,” “favorite headline,” “favorite layout,” “best story.” I was so fascinated with layout and ads. I guess that was also an early glimpse into my long and Jan Southern diverse marketing career – which included magazine publishing. I couldn’t be happier to bring my experience and my love for this community to Effingham Magazine. My husband Morris and I truly love living here. After living elsewhere, we know this is home. So now, as Effingham Magazine marks this milestone, I am excited to guide it into its next evolution as “Your Community Magazine.” We will continue providing the interesting and uplifting feature stories about the people and organizations that make this community one of the best places to live, work and play. But there will be more. More stories, more content and more ways to share everything about Effingham County through print, online and social media. Thank you for being part of this warm and friendly community, and thank you for continuing to enjoy Effingham Magazine as much as I do.

OVERCOMING THE ODDS

Effingham County Victim-Witness Assistance Program, Inc.

"Overcoming is much harder than succumbing." – Fran Ross Story by Katrice Williams | Photos by Shelia Scott

M

artin Luther King, Jr. said, “Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” The Effingham County Victim-Witness Assistance Program, Inc. (EVWAP) persists to help victims of domestic crimes do just that: take the first step of courage towards help. EVWAP will celebrate their 30th anniversary and annual vigil on October 18, 2019 with the theme: “Thirty Years of Excellence.” EVWAP, a 501(c)3 program, continues to diligently strive towards their biggest goal: “to assist victims of violent crimes, encouraging them to lead healthy, functional lifestyles.” The agency provides various comprehensive support and advocacy services. EVWAP’s Executive Director Fran Ross and her entire team have a genuine fervor for the priceless initiative. The team currently consists of: Victim Services Coordinator Monica Black, Agency Administrative Assistant Kara Parrish and EVWAP Intern Andrea Galvin. The vigils are held to remember and pay homage to those who have died due to domestic violence. It is also a time to recognize those who have overcome their circumstances. Past vigils were customarily characterized by prayer, a candlelighting ceremony and the presentation of information, namely statistics. This year, various activities have been added. Community leaders in attendance may include local law enforcement officers, county judges, attorneys and local sponsors. A few clients “who have overcome” their violent situations will also attend, as they are the main reason for the event. “It’s for them,” Fran declared. The event will include a “sit-down dinner, a silent auction and entertainment.” Fran understands the significance of the vigil. The EVWAP team has become all too familiar with the pain, agony and turmoil suffered by domestic crime victims, including those tragic cases where an individual waited too long to leave a violent offender…waited too long to take

From left to right: Fran Ross, Kara Parrish, Monica Black, Andrea Galvin

that first step towards a new life of hope. “You can spend a lot of time leading horses to water, but you can’t make them drink. Ultimately, it is up to them. When they’re DONE, that’s when we can help. At the end of the day, if 10 girls come in and even three overcome, we’ve done our job. It’s very impactful when we see someone walk away and do well. It’s also very impactful when we don’t,” Fran stated. While some individuals escape violent relationships right away, agency statistics reveal that “the average client, 97% being female, goes back at least seven times. Fran, though, understands that there is usually much more going on beneath the surface than meets the eye. What is more, the staff cares about their clients and their clients’ rights. They take client confidentiality very seriously and wholeheartedly respect every legality involving victim-witness confidentiality.

“We want everybody to be comfortable coming here, knowing that their information will be kept safe.” “We want everybody to be comfortable coming here, knowing that their information will be kept safe,” Fran stated. EVWAP has helped numerous individuals who have come through the door; a few, however, hold a special place in their hearts. She mentions one in particular: Marlee Edgar. “She is a jewel; she’s special to us. She’s somebody that has exceeded all expectations. A lot of people come and go,

but the ones who actually get through are embedded in our brains forever,” Fran said. Marlee Edgar is a Jacksonville, Florida native who moved to the local area in June 2018. Marlee has a nine-year-old daughter and is newly married. She met Fran on July 28, 2018 after receiving her business card from a police officer. The officer had responded to a domestic violence call from Marlee at about 3 a.m. on that same morning. When officers arrived on the scene, they observed a distraught, scared and battered Marlee. The offender had fled the scene–her boyfriend of nearly 11 years who had moved to the area with her. Officers searched the area for him for nearly three hours before he was finally apprehended. Currently, he is incarcerated.

"Marlee Edgar is a jewel; she’s special to us. She’s somebody that has exceeded all expectations. A lot of people come and go, but the ones who actually get through are embedded in our brains forever,” Marlee recalls the nightmare that she lived for so long—physical assault, yelling, screaming and threats with guns. Similar to many stories of abuse, it did not start out that way. In fact, she was initially attracted to her ex-boyfriend’s seemingly strong work ethic and kindness. As he eventually lost his job, Marlee was the provider for most of their relationship. In addition, he forged wedges in her relationships with family and friends; this led to Marlee’s own mental and emotional isolation from others which ensured that the evil committed against her would not be revealed. Unsurprising, after his arrest, he was deemed a “manipulator and sociopath.” “It wasn’t financial dependency, which is the #1 reason women stay. It was completely emotional dependency, and it’s hard to come out of that. He’s one of our worst offenders,” Fran remarked.

Marlee admits that she did leave on numerous occasions but would go right back, largely due to the offender’s brainwashing that often caused her to feel guilty. “We would separate for a few days or a week, and he would lure me back in. Things would revert; it was just a vicious cycle,” Marlee said. Marlee reached a low that she did not know could exist in her life; whether “alcoholism, drugs or cutting,” she

sometimes entertained various self-coping mechanisms, things that she thought she’d never do. Life often looked bleak, and Marlee didn’t see a way out. “The only way I saw that I was going to get out was, I kill myself, I kill him or he kills me; it had gotten that bad,” Marlee admitted. She knew, though, that she did have something special to live for—her daughter.

www.EFFINGHAMMAGAZINE.com | October/November 2019 11

“She had to grow up very fast. She witnessed a lot of screaming, a lot of yelling, a lot of hitting—stuff that a two, three or four-year-old shouldn’t. I’m so glad that the really, really bad things happened before she was old enough to remember. I’m so thankful that she is a very strong little girl,” Marlee said. The road to Marlee’s overall wellness has been nothing short of amazing, and the EVWAP team was there to help throughout the process. Whether providing emotional support, attending court proceedings or providing counseling, the team was there. In fact, Julia Cochran counseled Marlee. Interestingly enough, Julia is Fran’s mother. A long-time career professional, Julia has been volunteering with EVWAP for over twenty years. Marlee elects not to look back, and Fran is extremely proud of her immense transformation inside and out.“When she first came in, she was a different woman; she was crying with bruises, and she was holding her head down. She didn’t know herself. After about a month, she was blossoming. She started to morph into an independent woman.

She just needed to get away from him,” Fran said. Marlee refuses to be defined by that horrible morning or her disturbing past. She is committed to living a healthier, happier life. “It’s been a journey. I’ve been able to come off of depression medication. I no longer have crying spells and I’m on a normal sleep schedule. Everything about my life is 180° of what it was,” she stated. On August 9, 2019, one year after the treacherous incident, Marlee took one of the biggest leaps of her life. She married the love of her life. Some questioned whether everything had moved too fast. However, Marlee knew that it was right. She knew what she wanted; she also knew what she didn’t want. “I know the signs and flags of an unhealthy relationship. I never thought I would be able to have a relationship again. Everything is so healthy. If we have a problem, we work it out and move on. I tell him what’s bothering me; he tells me what’s bothering him. My husband is a hard worker, and he has been a very good influence. We’re open with each other. I

12 October/November 2019 | www.EFFINGHAMMAGAZINE.com

divulged all of my information and he still loves me,” Marlee stated. Marlee is grateful for the relationship between her husband and her daughter. She appreciates the example that he sets, as he is an authoritative father figure but can also be goofy like a big kid. The two get along great. Marlee is living proof that there is hope beyond the darkness of abuse. She wants to encourage others to take the first step, though it may be difficult. “Escape your current situation. Take a chance to trust somebody other than your abuser; that is the first step,” she said. Those who may have questions about the program or the upcoming vigil may visit www.effinghamvwap.org or call (912) 754-7460 for more information. *Per EVWAP Confidentiality: Marlee Edgar was present when all article information was obtained, and she permits the sharing of her information.

Offering Options for Area Seniors

Golden Hours Senior Services, LLC was established in October 2018 to expand the scope of local senior care options. Melissa Waller, owner and administrator, aspires to provide services that facilitate fulfillment and independence for seniors in the area.

“It seemed there were a lot of needs not being met by available services. There are seniors who can take care of themselves well, but they may need help with matters of everyday living, such as household management issues, transportation or resource navigation. That’s where concierge or companion services come in,” Melissa stated. For seniors needing personal assistance, licensed and experienced team members are available to provide in-home care. “The caregiver and I meet with the family to ensure it’s a good fit. It’s important that we know what each senior enjoys and needs and what will improve their quality of life,” Melissa explained.

Golden Hours offers an array of services: Companion Services are aimed at fulfilling household management needs: running errands, preparing meals or even transporting seniors to medical appointments, just to name a few. Personal Care Services provide assistance with daily activities, such as mobility, grooming and dressing. Concierge Services fill in the care gaps, as many seniors aren’t comfortable with travel, clerical or business matters. Melissa sees a big need for ongoing social engagement, so Golden Hours offers entertainment and excursion options for those able to get out and about if accompanied. “Activity and social engagement are vital elements for health and wellbeing, so I want to do everything I can to facilitate life enrichment services. We’re here to support independence, engagement and fulfillment,” Melissa said. While geared toward senior services, Golden Hours is committed to serving anyone who could benefit from such assistance.

What makes a home warm and inviting? Is it the furniture, the lighting, the throw pillows? Is it the paint and wallpaper? All the above? To keep our home a haven sometimes we need to ‘redo’ it all and other times we simply need to spruce it up. At Wiley’s Home Center, they take pride in their ability to help make your house a home. Not just a furniture and appliance store, they also have interior design and appliance repair services to accommodate their customers’ needs. They do it all, from helping you choose a statement piece that adds a fresh look to redesigning the whole room. They can bring your décor from blah to beautiful. Wiley's Home Center has proudly been providing the greater Rincon area with old fashioned customer service and quality products for over thirty years. In April of 1987, Wiley and his wife Rosalyn opened the doors to a 20,000 square foot furniture and appliance facility called Wiley's Home Center and in 1988, the successful business added 15,000 additional square feet of floor space. “In this day and age being a family owned business has its challenges, but we are very blessed with a very supportive community.” says Detra Thomas, company CEO. “And hat’s off to the greatest staff. They can handle it all- and do so in the best way possible. They provide the outstanding service behind the sale.” “We are recognized and known for our

PAYING IT FORWARD Velvet Callendar Overcame Hardship and Now Helps Others Do the Same. Story by Kelly Harley | Photos by Shelia Scott

ife – sometimes it doesn’t go as we plan. Many of us are faced with setbacks, and while some find it hard to rebound, others make a strong comeback. For one Effingham County woman, she knows that life can be tough. She also knows that having a strong will, belief in God and the generosity of others can turn a rough patch into a beautiful blessing. Velvet Callender left her hometown at 56 years old. She was born and raised in Minnesota, and while the South was quite a change, it was one she was ready for. Having never been to the Savannah area before, she landed in Rincon. “I moved here by myself. When I was leaving, my mom asked me if I knew what I was doing. I laughed and said, ‘I’m going to the gas station and getting on the highway.’” It was the leading of the Lord that drew her here, however; her original plans didn’t pan out as she had hoped they would. When she first moved to Rincon, she was without a job and her knowledge of resources was very limited. She reached out to Ready2CONNECT, Inc. (R2C), currently Ready2CONNECT powered by action pact, and met Destiny Bradshaw, the program’s director. R2C provided her clothing for her interview and gas cards so she could fuel up her car to drive there. Through the help of the organization and thanks to Velvet’s experience in the health care industry, she was able to get a job as a personal care assistant. Then a serious setback came. Velvet found herself homeless. While she wasn’t sleeping on a park bench, her vision of a house she could call home was blurry. “To me, homelessness means not having a home to live in; it’s living from place to place,” says Velvet. “You’re unstable, you’re uncertain, you’re uncomfortable. You have a fear and you never know where you’re going to be next. You always know it’s not permanent.” R2C helped her find short-term housing, and Velvet also found herself relying on the help of kind people. She shuffled from place to place, spending time at her pastor’s house and transitional housing in Savannah. For about five months, she lived with her son and his family when they moved here from

to get to work until her first paycheck. A gracious donor gifted her a car and covered the cost of insurance, tag, and title. “People have been there and blessed me and the need has been met. God has made a way from every perspective. He’s blessed me with amazing people I’ve been fortunate enough to meet along the way,” says Velvet. R2C went a step further by covering the cost for Velvet to get her pharmacy technician license, a position she held until she was offered an opportunity for career growth in the human service field with action pact, Inc. (formerly Concerted Services, Inc.).

I’ve been a foster parent. I’m a mom to three sons, a grandmother, and a great grandmother. I love giving back.” Atlanta. She also lived with a dear friend for some time. The string of struggles continued for Velvet. In between her moves, she had to return her car because her lease was up. She had no personal transportation and therefore she went from full-time hours to part-time hours. She could have given up, but she didn’t. She learned how to use the Chatham Area Transit system and looked for careers outside of the health care industry. She was blessed with a job as a store clerk at a local pharmacy. R2C and United Way 211 gave her vouchers

A journey she is happy to share with others. It’s almost as though Velvet’s story has come full circle; she now serves as the Effingham County coordinator for action pact, a community action agency that improves lives and communities. One of the biggest things action pact does in the local community is to provide weatherization support for low income families. Last winter the organization served more than 200 families and helped pay their heating bills. Velvet admits the people she serves are very close to her heart. “People who just lost their jobs or who had a bad accident come in and need help. We don’t look at them any less,” says Velvet. “We don’t judge them; we pray for them and we make sure their needs are met.” Just as so many people helped Velvet, she is paying it forward. She is known to go to people’s houses who can’t drive and fill out applications for them. She shares a story of how she went and picked up a lady and took her to get food. That’s no surprise considering how grateful Velvet is for the help she received. Couple that with her lifelong dedication to helping others and you have someone who understands what it means to be a lifeline to other have a college degree in human services. I’ve been a foster parent. I’m a mom to three sons, a grandmother, and a great grandmother. I love giving back.” Velvet has volunteered at various events throughout the county and was the Back2School Blowout volunteer coordinator, an outreach event put on by R2C. She supports the community in unique ways, too. On her birthdays, instead

of unwrapping gifts, she gives them. One year, she bought 10 gift cards from McDonald’s and handed them out to the homeless. Another year she bought birthday bags, stuffed them with a bible, food and water, and handed them out to homeless people. A part of her can relate. Velvet credits much of her comeback to the love and support she received from the R2C’s director, Mrs. Bradshaw, and her family back home in Minnesota. “If you reach out to get help, there will always be somebody. Pride gets in the way for a lot of people. I went from being needy, to not needing. The relationships that I have developed have been a blessing. I’ve met a lot of people here and it’s been a wonderful journey.” As Velvet shares her story, she sits on a cozy couch in her apartment. It’s her own, her permanent home for now. She’s surrounded by lovely furniture and decorations. Some were a gift from her close friend who left them to Velvet after she passed. Others are from Velvet’s

collection that she built over time. Outside in a parking spot sits a sharplooking car. She purchased it from a local car dealership and is making payments. She smiles as she talks about her life insurance policy and how she is saving for retirement. “If Michele Shuman of Thrivent Financial had not helped me get my finances together, I wouldn’t be at this point in my life. It wasn’t because I didn’t know how to do these things, it was that I didn’t exercise what I knew.” Velvet says it was also her honesty that propelled her comeback. “Pride is the fear of being ashamed openly. People don’t want people to know what they are going through. I would not be here if I had not told somebody. There are a lot of people who won’t help, but there are a lot of people who will.” Destiny Bradshaw, Ready2CONNECT, Inc. Program Director with Velvet Callendar

Celebrating 20 Years!

As Coldwell Banker Intercoastal Realty celebrates 20 years in Effingham County, Brandi Talton, owner and closing manager, is first to point out that the great agents and staff on their team is the main reason for the company’s success. Brandi says, “We are like a big family that helps each other out with all of our needs, personal or real estate related." “We have one agent who has been with us from the beginning. Jim Presnell came on board 20 years ago when CBIR was founded here in Rincon,” adds Brandi. Jim Presnell moved to Georgia 21 years ago from Connecticut, where he was a real estate agent as well. He began his real estate career here with Latrelle Pevy at ERA. Coldwell Banker Intercoastal Realty was founded in 1999 by Randy Crosby and Debbie Rafter. They approached Jim and asked if he would like to get in on the ground level. He met with them and decided he was on board for something new. “I was fully aware of the Coldwell Banker branding and knew what that brand could bring to Effingham County,“ stated Jim. “It just felt like a good fit for me. I am a second-generation Realtor and felt this was the perfect opportunity to grow with. And grow we have, both me and the company. My sales are above 1,500 for my career. I have built my business on my knowledge of real estate and dedication to clients and customers. I have earned their trust, which I hold in high regard,” adds Jim.

CBIR has grown as well over the last 20 years. When Jim started in 1999, it was only him and one other licensed agent. Jim was asked to step in from being just an agent to be the broker in 2007. Tebeau Hill Plantation Tebeau Hill Plantation is a family owned and operated outdoor event space located in Guyton, GA. The plantation’s name comes from a combination of the names of the Tebeau and Hill families who have long resided in Effingham. Carla and Billy Hill created the space because as she says, “In 2017, our son got engaged to a wonderful woman. In researching wedding venues, we saw an opportunity to create just what they wanted, and it was then that we decided to embark on a new family adventure and create a venue that many people can enjoy for years to come.” Although they were inspired by, and book many weddings, the space is also ideal for parties, family gatherings, showers and family reunions. The site sits on over 35 acres of diverse property, including a half acre scenic pond with a dock and handmade cedar arbor. It is the picture-perfect spot to exchange wedding vows in a serene outdoors locale. Carla says, “Many of our wedding couples chose the arbor area on the dock as the location for their ceremony because it is so pretty.”

Photos by Denise Gonsales Photography

The venue has a fabulous brand-new pole barn with attached dressing rooms and restrooms. There is also a separate kitchen area and they provide a rustic bar that can be placed anywhere in the barn The venue can accommodate up to 400 guests with ample parking. Because they are a family business, they can easily accommodate the needs of a

family wedding or other event. Carla says they only book one event per weekend which means the wedding party has the venue from Thursday until Monday at 5 p.m., making set up and clean up very convenient. She says if a couple has booked a wedding, they can also have their engagement pictures taken on site “It makes a nice continuity and of course it makes a great backdrop!” she says. Tebeau Hill Plantation keeps their pricing and terms of payment reasonable making it affordable for most every budget. Carla says, “Many people can’t afford the $50,000 wedding, but every bride deserves the wedding of her dreams. We keep our prices affordable because we are very family orientated and we believe you should have everyone you care about there with you on your special day. “Carla and Billy cherish their family and envision Tebeau Hill Plantation as a legacy to be passed on to their children and grandchildren.

Largesse Boutique

If your Style runs from boho to preppy... or casual to classic… If you love stylish clothing and home décor… Then ladies you have found your tribe! Welcome to Largesse Boutique where you can find a wonderful collection of clothing, jewelry, gifts and home goods in the styles you love. Now in its second year, owner Tracy Ray says that she opened the boutique because, “I noticed that there really weren’t any other local places that carried clothing that fit my style, so I decided to open the shop. I envisioned a place to shop that was close to home, affordable and stylish…a place for the community.” The most unique feature about Largesse Boutique is the prayer wall. People from all over come in to write a prayer and tuck it into the rustic shiplap wall. Tracy says, “The prayer wall was the initial vision that I had for the space and it has really resonated with the community. We are more than just a shopping destination, but a place of refuge to pray and seek prayer.” Largesse means “generous giver” and we want the shop to exemplify this in every area by ‘Living Largesse’ and being a blessing to the community.” Fashion from X-Small to 3XL Something that you may not know about Largesse is that they carry plus-sized clothing. “We want women of all ages and sizes to feel beautiful and powerful when they get dressed. Our clothes vary in style from casual wear, funky boho to

a sophisticated date night dress, and we carry jewelry to complement any outfit that you choose.” The jewelry ranges from casual to semi-precious and precious stones, including pieces from local jewelry makers. Interior Design and Décor Bonnie Boyette is the boutique’s interior designer and home décor expert. “When Tracy invited me to introduce home decor into the shop I was honored and excited. My goal is to carry a little bit of everything so that the community has a stylish and convenient place to shop for unique pieces.” Largesse now carries furniture, wallpaper, lighting, rugs, home decor and gifts. The shop has an eclectic mix of styles that make it easy for our customers to find something to complement their space. She urges customers to come and utilize her design expertise, “You can bring photos of your home and I would be happy to give advice on purchases and home décor.” One thing they want everyone to know is that they now carry wallpaper, which is making a huge comeback in decorating. The two add,” The main comment that we have heard from our customers since adding the décor side is how much the two (clothing and décor) complement each other. It is amazing to see how fashion and interior design trends often mirror each other, and we have enjoyed bringing them to Rincon. We love making Largesse a fun and exciting place to shop!” If you haven’t checked out this hidden gem yet, then you are truly missing out!

Tracy and Bonnie say, “We want to thank our loyal customers who have made the last two years prosperous! Keep watching because great things are in store for the upcoming year! “

JERUSALEM LUTHERAN CHURCH The Little Church that Stood through Fortitude with Faith Story by Barbara Russell | Photos by Shelia Scott

T

he congregants of Effingham’s Jerusalem Lutheran Church have continuously worshiped and glorified God for 250 years. In fact, this church is the oldest continuous worshiping Lutheran congregation in America, and their church building, which was built during 17671769, is the oldest public used building in Georgia. The statistics are admirable, and even more so because the 250-year journey has been one of great hardships which were overcome only by the steadfastness of the

faith of the little church’s congregants. Theirs has been a long and difficult journey that began in the country of Salzburg, presently known as Austria, when the Salzburgers faced religious persecution when they refused to embrace certain religious beliefs and continued to follow the teachings of Martin Luther. Their need to freely practice their faith was so strong that they willingly left their homes and began their long journey to Georgia to build a church where they could worship freely. They journeyed from Austria to

30 October/November 2019 | www.EFFINGHAMMAGAZINE.com

Augsburg, Germany where St. Anna’s Lutheran Church made arrangements for them to travel by ship to Georgia. After two months at sea, the group, led by their pastor John Martin Boltzius, arrived at the port of Savannah. The Salzburgers must have thought that the most difficult part of their journey was behind them, but the joy they must have felt when General Oglethorpe led them to the site of their new home was short lived, as they soon suffered great hardships. After two years of disease, sickness, death and

trying to grow crops in infertile soil, they requested to relocate their settlement. On March 3, 1736 they were allowed to move to their present site on the banks of the Savannah River. Each family was given a town lot for their home, a two-acre garden plot on the edge of the town, and a 50-acre farm further out. New Ebenezer thrived as the Christian community worked together to build a new life, a new town, and a new church. The town of New Ebenezer flourished. It was laid out similar to Savannah, and by 1741 the town’s population was twelve hundred. In Old Ebenezer the Salzburgers crops failed, but New Ebenezer was a settlement with many blessings. They were successful in agriculture, lumbering, silk culturing and raising cattle. They built the first orphanage, the first rice grist mill in Georgia, organized the first Sunday school, constructed the first church of any denomination, and the first governor of Georgia, John Adam Treutlen, was from New Ebenezer. The Jerusalem Lutheran Church was built on a high shady bluff on the Savannah River, and building it was a group effort. It was built of bricks, bricks that were made by hand from clay near the Savannah River. Women and children helped, and imprints of their fingertips can still be seen on some of the bricks that make up the walls of the church building. They carried the bricks to the building site, and women could carry several at a time, using their aprons to hold them. The church’s walls, made from the local clay, were made to endure - they are twenty-one inches thick. Some of the original panes of glass have also endured and can be seen in some of the church windows. Timber was cut from the surrounding area to use in building other parts of the church, and although the wooden floors have been covered with terrazzo, some members have pleasant memories as they recall hearing the wooden floors squeaking as they walked on them. Bells in the belfry were given by George Whitefield, the English minister who founded the Bethesda Orphanage for Boys in Savannah, and atop the belfry sits a metal swan which is a symbol of purity. New Ebenezer is a beautiful location, shady and serene with a soft river breeze. Looking at it today, one would not believe the hardships it has endured.…but the name Ebenezer means “monument to God” and “stone of help”, and once again the Salzburgers would need help. They would face more hardships and devastation as their new country, our country, struggled for independence and freedom in the Revolutionary War. During the British occupation, the town of New Ebenezer was ravaged, and so many of Ebenezer’s homes were burned or

damaged beyond repair that the families did not rebuild them; instead, they built homes on their outlying farms. By 1850 there was only one house in Ebenezer. The church had also been damaged. The British had used it as a storage place, as a hospital, and finally, as a stable for the British cavalry horses. The brick floor of hand made bricks was severely damaged. The town of Ebenezer never recovered, but the Jerusalem Lutheran Church continued to stand, and it would continue to thrive although it would again face devastation during the Civil War when General Sherman, on his march to the sea, took over the church and burned the church pews and all the fences. Today the Jerusalem Lutheran Church is the oldest public building in Georgia still used for worship by the descendants of the settlers. The church has been restored beautifully, and its setting is quiet, tranquil and lovely, with shade trees and natural landscaping. It’s a perfect setting for

worship and reflection. While walking the grounds, one can get a semblance of what worship in this church was like in an earlier time. John Martin Boltzius was their pastor until he died, and his statue stands in front of the church to welcome congregants and guests. Members love to talk about the ‘old timey days’ when there were hitching posts for the horses and buggies, and they got water from the artisan well that sits in front of the church. “This was the only water they had,” states a women giving a tour of the property. She pumped the long handle of the pump, and quickly fresh water was pouring out, “and they’d pump it and catch some in the palm of their hand, like this, to drink,” she said, “and they’d fill buckets for the horses.” The inside of the church looks pretty much like many other churches. It has a center aisle with pews on either side of the aisle and an altar in the front, but there is one main difference. In the middle of the

church the floor there is some patchwork where there used to be a wood stove. This stove was the church’s only heat and getting the church ready for services on a cold Sunday morning took some determination and dedication. As the story goes, early on Sunday mornings a boy would make sure the church was warmed for the Sunday service. He lived several miles away, but he would get up on Sunday morning while it was still dark, mount his horse and gallop through the woods to the church where he would light the stove pipes to begin warming the building. Then he would gallop back home, get cleaned up, eat breakfast and then go back to church for the service. His efforts were greatly appreciated on those cold days! This necessary chore must have been passed on to younger boys, because they would say, “I can’t wait to feed the fire!” In those ‘old timey days’, the women and children sat on the left side of the church, and the men sat on the right side of the church, and the men had their own door on that side of the building. The men wore hats, and when inside the church, they took them off and set them on the bench beside them. If the church was

32 October/November 2019 | www.EFFINGHAMMAGAZINE.com

crowded, they put their hats on the floor. The choir sat in two different sections in the front of the church. The adult choir sat on the left section, and the youth choir sat on the right. The youth choir section was called ‘Amen Corner’. “We had Kool-aid and cookies in Bible school,” I was told, and before the adjacent Sunday school building was built, Sunday school classes were held in different areas inside the church building. One class met under the belfry. Once a year, when the weather was nice, congregants would pack baskets of food to be shared after the church service. “We had a long, very long table that we would eat at,” I was told. “When I was a child it seemed like it was a mile long, but it was probably about 50 feet long. I miss that table. The adults ate first while the children played, and they’d tell the children, ‘Do not run! Do not run in the church!’ The children would eat after the adults were finished, and there would be another church service.” “There was a long row of outhouses over there,” I was told. “There were four, or six, but they were just for the women.” “Where were the outhouses for the men?” I asked.

“Oh, they just went across the street in the bushes!” Electricity was added to the church in the 1940’s, as were other modern conveniences, but great care has been taken to restore the building with authenticity. One can walk through the grounds, visit the church and step back in time.

There is no doubt that the members of Jerusalem Lutheran Church will continue to stand firm in their faith in the place that God has chosen for them to worship. They are a very welcoming church, and they invite everyone to celebrate their 250th anniversary with them.

Need Power Machinery and Lawn Equipment…

Gnann’s Fix-It is Your Answer

M

r. Bowers Gnann, Jr. was well known by many as “the genious” of small appliance repairs. This led him to found Gnann’s Fix-It Shop in 1964. The shop was originally opened to be a service point for small appliances such as toasters, lamps, electric irons and any other small gadgets people had in their homes at the time. Now, 55 years later, the family business is still alive…only the gadgets have changed. They now specialize in the sales and service of power machinery and lawn equipment…like lawn mowers, chain saws, tillers and the like. This small family-oriented business has certainly grown and changed over these last 55 years, but one thing remains the same…the core value of sales and quality service is the same. Customer satisfaction is a priority at Gnann’s Fix-It Shop

They stand behind all the equipment they carry 100%. Brothers Clarence and Charlie Gnann now run the business founded by their father. They grew up in this business under his leadership and both know the business from the ground up. Gnann’s is much more than just a simple repair shop. They are certified dealers

for well known brands such as STIHL, Snapper, Exmark, Billy Goat, Briggs & Stratton, Kohler, Tecumseh and more. Not only do they stand behind what they sell, they also stand behind what they repair. If you choose to do the repair job yourself, they will have the parts you need in stock…or, they will find them for you. Their knowledgeable sales and repair team are always at your disposal to answer any questions you may have about how to fix your own equipment. They aim to please. If friendly, reliable and honest service is what you are looking for, Gnann’s is definitely the place to go for all of your lawn equipment service needs. Or, tired of working on the old stuff? Their trained sales staff will help you find the right new equipment that best fits your needs.

DINING in Effingham

SOUTH FORK PROVISIONS:

Bringing Families Back to the Table.

Story by Katrice Williams | Photos by Shelia Scott

I

n a time where there is a fast food venue on every street corner and iPhones, iPads, Facebook, email, Twitter and overbooked schedules consume many individual’s lives each day, there is an obvious void in many families. Several aspects of the family unit have changed over time, along with many of the non-negotiables of the yester-years–a time when good food and family came together around the table. Joe and Jennifer VanGiller were determined to do something about that. The two opened the doors of their shop, South Fork Provisions (SFP), on May 14th, deciding to leave the corporate life behind in order to embark on their

entrepreneurial dreams. Indeed, they took a real leap of faith. “It was something that was placed on our hearts to do. We have our faith in the right spot, as we put all of our trust in God. We know that whatever we go through, He’ll sustain us. God gave us the gift to serve people and that’s what we aim to do,” Jennifer said. In fact, whether opening a farmers market style shop or a traditional barbecue restaurant, the couple entertained several ideas. “It just kept coming back to good, home-cooked food.” Joe and Jennifer have been big foodies for a long time. Whether experimenting with new recipes, vacationing at food-

centric destinations or just cooking for others to enjoy, they have a true appreciation for good food. Both have always been in the food/customer service industry, so they certainly have a lot of beneficial experience. In today’s busy times, where fast food is often the most convenient option, Joe and Jennifer wanted customers to have convenient yet “homemade” dishes where quality is never compromised. They decided that “prepared meals to go” would be a phenomenal option for the community. “We put so much love and so much effort into our dishes. Our biggest mission is bringing families back together around

the table. We just want to make life a little bit easier for someone. I like knowing that we can help others with the service that we provide,” Jennifer stated. An array of tasty dishes, prepared each week, are made for customers right in the “shop’s fully-equipped commercial kitchen.” The dishes are packaged and labeled; heating suggestions and ingredients are on each label. The dishes are, then, refrigerated and ready for customer pickup. A large container feeds approximately 6-8 people for about $30 and a small container feeds about 3-5 people for an average of $15. There is actually no fixed menu or specific “genre of food,” as the couple prides themselves in creatively changing the selection for customers week-to-week. Each Saturday, a new menu variety for the upcoming week is “released online,” available to view on the restaurant’s website, Facebook and Instagram. Popular dishes include: Chicken Pot Pie, Shepherd's Pie, Baked Spaghetti,

“The best recipes always include a mix of good food and family.” - Anonymous In addition, SFP offers catering for both “small groups and corporate occasions.” Hot menu items are available for special events and can be delivered. Catering menus may be “customized” to meet each customers specific needs. What is more, the couple plans to “donate a part of the proceeds each month” to a local charity. “It’s our way of giving back to | | the community,” Jennifer remarked. 5 WAYS TO SURVIVE THE WINTER BLUES

all is beautiful. The leaves are turning, it is cooler outside, school is back in session and the holidays are just around the corner. Fall also brings with it an urge to slow down, snuggle into the covers and eat some comfort foods. Fall through winter, even in a relatively warm climate like our area, means colder temperatures, longer periods of darkness and less sunlight. These conditions trigger your natural response to hibernate.

So what can you do? 5 Ways to Survive the Winter Blues •

You feel sleepy: the circadian rhythm is your body’s internal clock that prompts when we sleep, rise, eat—and is affected by environmental cues like sunlight and temperature.

You are SAD- Seasonal Affective Disorder: You may have brain fog, are less motivated, have the urge to isolate, difficulty staying awake, experience more agitation, guilt over menial things and even despair.

You are craving carbs- When we feel down, we look for a quick boost. Carbs will quickly boost your insulin and eventually spike your serotonin, so you feel better for a short time.

But our jobs, family responsibilities and life in general don’t hibernate which means we must be able to push ourselves at a time when our biology is saying “slow down.” These are 5 ways you can help yourself adapt to these conditions.

1.

Get more Vitamin D from light (sun or simulated) - Get outside or stand at the window - Open the curtains and blinds to let in as much natural light as possible - Purchase a light box. These boxes simulate sunlight. 2. Eat healthy foods that contain Vitamin D and boost your serotonin - Eggs - Chocolate above 72% cacao and low in sugar - Spinach - Seeds and nuts – pumpkin, flax seeds and almonds are good choices - Bananas –boost serotonin almost immediately 3. Take Vitamin D supplements In order to raise your vitamin D levels into the optimum range the Endocrine Society has recommended the following daily intake levels (from all sources): - Children under one-year-old: 400-1,000 IU/day - Children one to 18 years old: 600-1,000 IU/day - Adults: 1500-2000 IU/day 4. Use Essential Oils to increase serotonin - Lemon Oil can boosts the production of both serotonin and dopamine. You can sniff it directly from the bottle or diffuse it for 6 minutes every day. - Peppermint Oil is an invigorating and refreshing essential oil. You can inhale directly from the bottle or diffuse 3-5 drops daily. - Geranium -contains citronellol and geraniol which can help to improve one's mood. It can be applied topically to the skin where it can then travel to the limbic system (the emotional control center of the brain). - Ylang-Ylang - helps treat depression by relaxing the nerves and reduces adrenaline. Inhaling is a popular option. Using a diffuser and allowing the fragrance to permeate your home is another option. 5. Get some exercise - It could be as simple as a 20-minute walk - A yoga class 2-3 times a week - HIIT (high intensity interval training) - 1-2 times a week
