JOSH REDDICK: An Effingham Legend Gives Back to the Community

October/November 2021

In every transformational journey, there comes a time where change necessitates a renewed perspective—a new visual identity that embodies the future of the Effingham Health System.

Quality Healthcare Close to Home.

Our kids deserve A+ schools. At Georgia-Pacific’s Savannah River Mill, we believe that at the heart of every great community is a great school system. That’s one reason why we make it a priority to invest in and support educational and enrichment programs that aid in student development, achievement and success. The other reason may be a little selfish – a lot of the kids those programs help are our family.

When I took over the magazines more than two years ago, I inherited publications with a long history. Effingham Magazine and Pooler Magazine were established magazines that had served the communities well. And now we are celebrating our 15-year anniversary! Over the years, Effingham Magazine has chronicled the people and organizations who have made this area what it is today. The magazine has highlighted the inspiring individuals, who often against many obstacles, achieved remarkable things or Jan Southern gave back to the community in extraordinary ways. I always say, ours is a magazine that puts out “feel good” stories about the people, places and organizations that make this the best place to live, work and play. That is one of the many things I love about Effingham Magazine and what we continue to strive for with each issue. If you have been picking up our magazines, finding them in your mailbox at home or reading online over the last two years, you may have noticed some important changes to Effingham Magazine. We have improved content, better stories and it is just as much a digital magazine as it is one in print. We have expanded our distribution of Effingham Magazine to more than 250 locations throughout Effingham County even at the visitor’s centers on I-95 and the airport. Our online readership has grown, and our social media presence brings readers into the stories of Effingham every day. Fifteen years ago, Effingham County legend Josh Reddick was just starting his career in baseball. He has been on our covers before and we couldn’t be more excited to have him on the cover for our 15th issue anniversary issue— now as a professional athlete and philanthropist, having made such an impact with his generosity and encouragement to this community. We hope you enjoy this issue as much as we loved making it for you. Here’s to 15 years serving Effingham and many more to come.

The Josh Reddick Foundation Elevates Effingham Community

J

osh Reddick is an extraordinarily talented baseball player. His stats, his career, his World Series Championship, they all add up—rightly— to a permanent position as an Effingham “Hometown Hero.” But it’s what Josh has done with his fame and fortune that changes the picture—that elevates Josh—and in so doing, elevates our community. By kind acts and extreme generosity, by seeing the often unseen kids who need to be seen, by putting the financial resources into athletes who play with all their heart, Josh has transcended ’hero’ and become the heart of his hometown and we are all the better for it.

The Josh Reddick Foundation The Josh Reddick Foundation’s mission is to be an advocate for the youth and those in need in our community. JRF is “Working to create a better future for our youth” through many avenues, including scholarships, monetary donations, sponsorships and community fundraisers. This alone would have been more than enough for most people, in fact most people probably wouldn’t have done half of his charitable giving. the spring and soccer in the fall. Morgan says in addition to being vital to the needs of children, the stadium has been an economic success. “Tournaments make it a ’destination field’ to market their tournaments. And that’s good because every single time a family comes out to a game that adds to the county revenue. It is an economic boost for the whole area.” Educational Giving & More In addition to the baseball stadium, the JRF is very involved with giving to the educational community. The foundation has made two donations of $10,000—one to South Effingham High School and the other to Effingham County High School, plus $5,000 to whichever high school hosted the county rivalry football game each year for the last four years. Josh Reddick Foundation Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 are awarded to two seniors at each high school every year to help deserving students pursue higher education. The foundation continues to give money back to the Board of Education by being a platinum level sponsor to both Effingham County High and South

Effingham High and donating money to each elementary school. In honor of his achievements, the South Effingham High School Mustangs were very proud to retire the #24 jersey that was worn by Josh during his high school career. It now resides in a showcase at the school. The JRF also conducts fundraisers and portions of all money raised go toward the recreation departments as well as the sheriff’s office, fire departments, animal shelters, the Manna House, the Treutlen House, and more. They collaborate with many community partners including the collegiate summer league team the Savannah Bananas to find ways to better serve those in need. Along with the almost one million dollars donated to build the Josh Reddick Stadium, educational giving, the donations to The Manna House and the Treutlen House at New Ebenezer, the total amount given to the community by Josh and the Josh Reddick Foundation is up to over 1.1 million dollars so far. Lasting Legacy Josh has also been actively involved with military veterans and their families.

In 2019 he was Bob Feller Act of Valor Award nominee for contributing his time and resources towards providing a positive experience for military veterans and their families. He has also been a member of the Taylor Hooton Foundation Advisory Board since 2015, which advocates against appearance and performance enhancing drug use. Clarence Morgan says “People don’t come close to knowing what Josh does quietly and without publicity. Food drives, shoes he sent here to be given away, sponsoring games, he has done much more than the ball field. He has been generous to the county for years. Josh has made us proud. Now his legacy will be the Josh Reddick Stadium, to be used by generations of children.” “Here’s a true story” says Pauline, “One night Josh snuck into town, came out to the field, and watched the kids play a game. He talked to all the kids, signed balls, and took all the pictures they wanted. No press, no photo ops. He flew in and flew out under the radar. That’s the kind of man Josh Reddick is.” n

Josh and his wife Jett are the parents of twin boys Maverick Joshua and Ryder Blaze. For more information on Josh and the Josh Reddick Foundation visit www.joshreddickfoundation.org | @realjoshreddick | /josh.reddick.104 www.EFFINGHAMMAGAZINE.com | October/November 2021 13

You may have heard the buzz around Rincon about the new fall menu of delicious meal replacement shakes and energizing herbal teas at Crush Energy and Nutrition. How about a pumpkin spice coffee cake or a salted caramel pumpkin shake? Or a yummy pumpkin pecan praline shake? Although Crush’s shake flavors taste like dessert, they’re packed with the macro and micronutrients your body needs to thrive. Each shake is around 250 calories, contains 21 vitamins and minerals, has less sugar than a banana, and averages only 4 grams of fat, while having enough nutrients to keep you feeling full. In addition to the fall menu, try fan favorites brownie batter, banana nut bread, or salted caramel cheesecake. The teas provide lots of energy and focus while boosting your metabolism and aiding in healthy digestion for maximum nutrient absorption. They actually don’t taste like tea at all—because they taste like you are having a treat. Try a Screwball or Blue Hawaiian and see for yourself. Crush Nutrition and Energy advises pairing a shake with a tea to make a combo. They suggest two drinks because the shake is a perfect meal replacement while the tea is the ultimate energy boost. Try a Banana Pumpkin Bread shake paired with an Orange Spice tea for the ultimate afternoon pick-me up. Crush Energy and Nutrition owner Makayla Castanon says “You can achieve balanced nutrition with the support of our protein shakes, weight-management programs, nutritional supplements, and sports nutrition solutions. Our products taste great and really work!” Makayla opened her shop because, “I believe in our products, and I love meeting new people so come see us! Branch Manager, Rincon Office Darrell Dasher grew up in the Sand Hill area, so managing the Rincon office of Yates-Astro really is “home” for him. He gives back to his hometown by officiating sports events for all age groups in and around Effingham County. His influence goes beyond our area through his involvement as a Shriner and a Mason. Shriner Hospitals for children never charge for their services, a blessing that is the result of the work of Darrell and many others. The Children’s Home in Macon is an outgrowth of his volunteer work as well. Darrell considers it a form of “giving back” to his hometown by protecting area homes and businesses as a pest control professional with Yates-Astro. It is hometown people like Darrell Dasher who have made Yates-Astro, a family owned local business, the largest pest control provider in the region.

It’s Fourth Quarter...There’s Still Time

F

all is here. This is my absolute favorite time of year. I grew up in Cincinnati and fall is beautiful there—I have the fondest memories of falling into piles of leaves after hours of raking, performing at halftime at high school football games and drinking hot chocolate from a Styrofoam cup in the bleachers. The leaves changed to the most beautiful colors. The air became a bit frosty but there were still many warm days as well. I loved Fall, but there was also a little sadness at the impending cold weather, shorter days, dark nights, and inevitable snowfall. It always made me a little sad. Now in South Georgia, Fall is still beautiful. I am happy with the cooler weather, falling leaves, an abundance of hay bales and of course, Pumpkin Spice flavored everything. There is Still Time to Adjust This is the time of year that may also bring reflection. For me and my business, this is the time of year I take time to assess whether I am achieving my goals. I don’t wait until December to check in with my goals and see if I can be satisfied with what the year brought. I don’t set a New Year’s Resolution in hopes that I will do better next year. There is still time—this year—to achieve more. This applies to personal goals and milestones in our personal lives, careers or businesses. Use October and November (before the holidays really kick in) to assess where you are and work to finish the year strong.

Are you on track to hit your goals for the year? Yes? Great. Maybe it’s time to raise the bar a little. Stretch yourself, your family or your work team and see what else you can attain before the New Year ball drops. After a good hard look, are you going to fall short of your goals? It’s okay to be honest and realize you may not have achieved all you hoped. It has been a difficult year for everyone. Maybe lower the bar just a little so you can finish the year having a feeling of accomplishment. Then set aside some time to understand why you missed the mark and how you will overcome this shortfall next year. • Did you do what you said you were going to do? • Did you keep goals in mind every week of every month of the year? • What obstacles got in the way (Pandemic anyone?) Narrow your attention and focus on those activities that will bring you the most results in these last few months. Do you run a local business? How will you make sure this is the best holiday season ever? Have you gotten lazy with your fitness routine? There is still much that can be done in setting good habits. Get out that planning calendar and set weekly goals with tasks to be completed each day that will move you toward success by year’s end. We’ve all had a challenging year. It will feel much better come December if we can feel some sense of accomplishment about the positive things achieved in 2021.

DEWITT INSURANCE AGENCY “DeWitt Insurance Agency is proud to have been a part of this county for 65 years,” says DeWayne Ladner, President of DeWitt Insurance. “We are the oldest and largest independent insurer in Effingham and continue to exemplify our founding principles–client satisfaction, personal service and proper coverage at a competitive price.” Agency History DeWitt Insurance was founded by Edgar A. DeWitt Sr. in 1956, and in 1978 E. Al DeWitt Jr. and his wife Lenda purchased the agency. The DeWitt’s welcomed DeWayne Ladner to the agency in 1996, which opened up the opportunity in the agency for expanding financial services. Lenda became the new president in 1997 and when she retired in 2002, she passed the torch to DeWayne as the new President and CEO. DeWayne has grown the agency through acquisitions and by adding additional agency locations in Statesboro, Georgia and Diamondhead, Mississippi, as well as co-founding Vision Financial Group with co-partners Scott Bass and Talbert Edenfield. Customer Service is Key Today the DeWitt Insurance Agency and Vision Financial Group are there for your insurance and financial service needs. DeWayne says, “We are an insurance and financial center with all the tools and resources you need to help you build a strong safety

net utilizing home, auto, life, health insurances and retirement planning.” At DeWitt, they have computer software and rater systems for their insurance products and services and can generate a quote almost immediately, email you documents, and do business remotely or in person. There is little to no staff turnover, in fact, multiple agents have been there 25 plus years. As an independent agency they utilize their professional insurance associations to always provide their clients with the most appropriate options available. Vision Financial Group Vision Financial Group (www.visionga.com) specializes in financial planning, insurance planning, estate planning, and retirement and investment planning. Affording a comfortable retirement remains the top financial concern for most people. Worrying about it will never achieve anything, but taking action and setting achievable goals will. That’s what life insurance is for and the financial planners at Vision can help you protect those who mean the most to you. Questions about retirement, life insurance or other planning for your future? Call Vision Financial Group. They

can help ensure your financial journey is taking you where you want to go. Sixty Five Years “We have built our agency on the decades-long relationships we’ve fostered with the families of Effingham County and throughout Georgia. Our mission is helping our friends and neighbors protect themselves and, as a result, we have built a strong reputation in our community,” says DeWayne. “We are proud our clients have done business with us for many years and have been our greatest source of referrals which has spread our business throughout the state of Georgia. We look forward to serving our community and beyond for many more years to come.”

10 SWEET TOOTH TIPS My husband and I were grocery shopping the other day and I noticed something. It dawned on me that it’s that time of the year again. The season of sweet tooths! I see all the shelves packed with candy ready for Halloween. You know kids love candy. And parents, we can’t deny diving into our kids’ candy bags from time to time. And what’s coming next? Thanksgiving and Christmas right around the corner. And we know all about those Little Debbie’s Christmas tree cakes. So in this article, I want to give you my 10 SWEET TOOTH TIPS to follow during this sweet tooth season:

1

SPACE EATING YOUR CANDY CORNS AND LITTLE DEBBIE CAKES PREDOMINANTLY DURING MEALTIMES. This will allow enough time to pass for your saliva to do its job neutralizing all the acids from eating.

2

PAY ATTENTION TO HOW MUCH YOU EAT. You have to think of your mouth as a machine. The more you use it, the more parts are likely to break on it. Occasionally, you’re going to have to repair some parts, but why not save what you can, when you can?

3

BE MINDFUL OF THE CONSISTENCY OF THE FOODS YOU EAT AS WELL. Caramels and taffys are very sticky and are known for pulling out fillings and crowns. Hard foods like almonds and candy canes are hard by nature and by force can break teeth. Soft foods like breads and cakes can inadvertently cause teeth to break as well. I see this all the time in our dental practice, especially around the holidays. So be careful guys and gals.

4

IF YOU ABSOLUTELY LOVE CANDY AND ALWAYS HAVE TO HAVE IT, AT LEAST CHOOSE SUGAR-FREE CANDIES WITH XYLITOL. Xylitol actually fights cavities by arresting the activity of the Streptococcus mutans bacteria that causes tooth decay. Xylitol gums are great because they stimulate salivary flow which is great for neutralizing acids and xylitol acts on stopping the bacteria. My personal favorites are Dr. John’s xylitol candies (www.drjohns.com) and Mentos gum.

5 6 7

TRY NEUTRALIZING THE ACIDS IN YOUR MOUTH FREQUENTLY THROUGHOUT THE DAY. For a quick organic solution of neutralizing mouthwash, mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 2 cups of water. The main thing is to reduce acid wear.

8 9

ALSO MAKE SURE YOU’RE UP TO DATE WITH YOUR REGULARLY SCHEDULED DENTAL CLEANINGS. Professional cleanings help maintain the health of the oral cavity. Keep in mind, your oral health is directly connected to your systemic health.

10

TRY TO BALANCE OUT THOSE EXTRA CALORIES WITH EXERCISE AND A NUTRITIONAL DIET. Exercise is the best medicine. It’s natural and prevents depression, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. OF COURSE MAKE SURE THE LAST THING YOU DO BEFORE GOING TO BED IS FLOSS THEN BRUSH YOUR TEETH USING A FLUORIDATED TOOTHPASTE. The act of brushing will remove the remaining bacterial plaque buildup on your teeth left from the day, and the fluoride acts as a protectant sealer and makes the teeth stronger, further protecting the teeth from acid wear.

IF YOU DO EXPERIENCE ANY SENSITIVITY OR “ZING” IN YOUR SWEET TOOTH, THAT IS NOT A GOOD SIGN. You should see a dentist right away. You are experiencing sensitivity due to a problem, and the tooth is letting you know. IF YOU DO EXPERIENCE A TOOTHACHE DURING THE SWEET TOOTH SEASON AND YOU CAN’T GET TO THE DENTIST RIGHT AWAY, TRY PUTTING TINY DABS OF CLOVE OIL ON THE TOOTH along with using and alternating between Tylenol and ibuprofen every six hours for pain relief. Be careful with the clove oil. It’s very strong in smell and can cause chemical burns to the gum tissue.

No one wants to have a dental emergency during memorable moments. So hopefully my 10 tips will help you have a pleasant sweet tooth season. Y’all enjoy! #LoveToSmile In case of a dental emergency, you can reach iHeart Dental at (912) 499-1133 or our after hours emergency line (912) 429-2878.

GARY LEWIS Senior Lead Pastor at First Baptist Church Rincon Lives For Service Story by Cindy Reid Photos by Tonya Perry

F

irst Baptist Church has been in Rincon for over 100 years, which is about as long as the city of Rincon (incorporated in 1927) has been around. Always an integral part of the community, the church today is stronger and more vital than ever. Their mission to “Passionately follow Jesus as we serve others with truth and grace” is exemplified by their Senior Lead Pastor Gary Lewis. Born and raised outside of Atlanta, Gary is a graduate of Clemson University (South Carolina), Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (Texas) and Beeson Divinity School of Samford University (Alabama). He and his wife Krissy have been married for 31 years and have two children. Their son Graham is in his fourth year at Georgia Tech, and their daughter Harper graduates in December with an RN degree from Georgia Southern. The Lewis family has been in Rincon for the past six years after living in Ft Worth, Atlanta and Tulsa. They love living in coastal Georgia and enjoy spending time exploring the beaches, the historic districts of Savannah and all the area has to offer. Guided to Ministry Gary’s path wasn’t always toward ministry. As a college undergraduate, he studied to be a corporate lawyer and headed to a prestigious MBA program. Over the course of the next two years, “I came to see that God had something else for me to do.” It was while working as an intern in a law firm the summer after his sophomore year that he understood something in the corporate world—the world of the very rich—that made a

meeting Santa at the North Pole event create fun and positive energy. Gary says, “We try to equip kids to take on the reality of life, from childhood to dating, to handling money, everything someone needs as they grow up in today’s world. In six years, we have seen kids grow from middle school to high school to college and they are really getting what we are doing. It certainly appears to be helping them navigate the changes in their lives.“ FBC has two sports leagues—flag football and cheerleading—and Gary says, “Sports are important for the kids involved because we approach it holistically by teaching them a value, like kindness and generosity and the importance of having healthy bodies, encouraging others and competing well.” Getting parents involved is also important because, “Sport practices are a good setting for parents to get together, a place where we can introduce people from all walks of life to each other. Sports can erase any differences. They are a great tool to bring people together.” And they don’t forget Seniors, who also have special events, community meals and games to look forward to at FBC. Social Media FBC’s robust online presence includes a comprehensive website, an active facebook page, an Instagram account and a Youtube channel. “I feel that having a virtual online presence is like having another building. We can reach people through our website, Facebook, Instagram, and they are just as welcomed. Covid brought many people to online services, and they have continued watching from home. “Gary also hosts a weekly podcast, called the Family Room Conversations where he talks about topics suggested by viewers. Although sometimes learning new computer tools can be

frustrating, Gary says, “approach it like play and if you mess up, start again!” People to God When asked what he wants for his congregation Gary says “The thing I pray for the most is that they understand that there is nothing that ever catches God off guard. He is never going to abandon them. A hundred years ago we were dealing with the Spanish Flu and here we are again. Nothing is new to God. “He says he also wants people to understand “we are battling four things that are trying to lure us: Pleasure, Possessions, Power and Recognition. These three distract us from a life of meaning and purpose. We must serve people because life is more than just a trip. I want everyone to know God loves us and wants us to spend forever with Him.” He says there is always a need for more outreach, especially for the residents who are here from all over the world. “Many of these people need life lessons on how to navigate in this country, how to manage within our world, including the need to learn English. Helping people from other countries, people who may be a bit lost, is an outreach need.” At FBC Gary says,” We try our best to be authentic, loving, and truthful. If we can keep the correct tension on these three-just as my daughter keeps the correct tension on her violin strings to make great music- when we are working in grace try to find correct tension- we may not agree on everything, but we can be authentic, loving, and truthful.” When asked what he wants his lasting impression to be Gary says, “That I tried to reach past all that separates us to help us connect with God. People to People. People to God.” n

WHEN A TEAM IS LIKE FAMILY “brings his unparalleled expertise to the service department.” In addition, Karen Page, Wiley’s design specialist, “brings her creative touch” to the store’s showroom. Debbie Wilson, Wiley’s “go-to guru,” joined the team in 2017; she brought her many talents in retail service and sales, and she is a valuable part of the team. Victoria Westbrook,

I am in awe of my team every day. I thank God for providing the right people at the right time.

Wiley’s Home Center provides room furnishings, home décor, appliances and so much more, all within 35,000 square feet of space. Detra Thomas is owner and president of Wiley’s. “We sell all these things, but we are mainly interested in establishing a relationship with our clients. Our focus is on understanding the customer’s needs and exceeding their expectations,” Detra stated. Wiley’s has been serving the community for a long time. That type of success has been a direct result of their team of devoted professionals. “The store’s success is mainly due to my amazing team and their commitment to excellence,” Detra added. Peggy, who has been the office manager since 1989, has “experienced, first-hand, the generosity and giving nature of the Thomas family.” That generosity has been shown to the Wiley’s team and within the community itself. “It isn’t just about selling furniture or appliances. It’s about helping the people in and around our community, including those who work for Wiley’s,” Peggy said. Customer service, too, is incredibly important to the Wiley’s family. The staff takes great pride in providing customers with the products and services that will best meet their needs. According to Detra, Betty Chaffin, who has been the store’s accounts receivable specialist since 1997, is one of the reasons that Wiley’s customer service is so superior, while Allen Gnann, long-time service specialist,

a successful salesperson and brand new mom, has contributed her many talents as well. Also, Donna Horton, who is Detra’s sister, recently joined the Wiley’s team on a part-time basis, assisting with inventory management. Donna is co-owner of Horton’s General Store. “I’ve always wanted to be able to help in the family business, and the opportunity finally arrived, ” Donna stated. Michaela O’Conner is the newest on the block. Her natural people skills have brought a fresh new energy to the store, while Lee Brown is Wiley’s treasured housekeeper/comedian and certainly adds value to the team.

“She always keeps us laughing,” Detra said. Detra notices the contributions made by each member of her team. She brags on her exemplary delivery guys. “The feedback from our customers speaks volumes on how well they do their job. John Dotson has been with Wiley’s since 2001. Frank Blue, Chuck Layton and Jon Smith are top notch and always go the extra mile to make sure the job is complete,” she stated. Wiley’s Home Center’s unique stories, experiences, compassion and commitment to excellence set it apart from any other furniture store. Detra knows that without her team, there would be no Wiley’s. “I am in awe of my team every day. I thank God for providing the right people at the right time. More importantly, I am truly blessed to call these people my friends and family. Come in and see for yourself the Wiley’s difference.”

MATT MORRIS Springfield City Manager Makes a Difference Where it Matters Story by Katrice Williams | Photos by Tonya Perry

36 October/November 2021 | www.EFFINGHAMMAGAZINE.com

A Call to Duty Matt made a decision that changed his life and the lives of others when he accepted a new career opportunity as Springfield’s assistant city manager under the leadership of City Manager Brett Bennett. Upon Bennett’s retirement from service, Matt was selected to fill the position. That was about four years ago, and it has been full steam ahead ever since. “I just wanted Springfield to succeed. I saw it as a blank canvas. I’ve tried to look at problems as opportunities,” Matt says. Growth and Development Matt has been encouraging other potential businesses and investors to embrace those opportunities. One of Matt’s biggest initiatives has been to foster downtown development, alongside the city’s Downtown Development Authority (DDA). “I’ve tried to use our Development Authority as a way to help spur that desire to grow and to get new businesses here,” he says. Matt has been privileged to work with passionate business professionals like James Carlson of Carlson & Company—a local entrepreneur striving to make Springfield a great city for living and leisure. James has brought several businesses to the community over the years. In 2018, he and his wife Liz renovated a historic building in

downtown Springfield on Laurel Street, turning it into an event venue—The Local on Laurel. It has been a huge success. After closing on a long-time negotiation with the DDA last year, James leased the Walt’s Furniture Store building on Laurel, completing a major renovation on it, and subsequently, moving two of their businesses there—Joann’s Florist and Carlsons’ Premier Events. Matt also brokered a deal earlier this year where the city gave the old and abandoned Springfield Fire Station building to the DDA. James Krikava, a retired firefighter and certified CrossFit coach, signed a lease agreement for the property and has turned it into a CrossFit gym—Pine Street CrossFit; Krikava has an option to buy after two years. The new gym has been a great addition to downtown Springfield. As Matt himself enjoys CrossFit, he feels that the gym has been an outstanding benefit to the community.

Springfield is my hometown. It’s a place I hold near and dear.

S

pringfield City Manager Matt Morris has been an asset to the city over the past few years, fostering growth and development while being a proponent for Springfield’s overall prosperity and success. The city has been gaining attention from citizens and visitors alike, largely due to the efforts of Matt and his team of dedicated officials. “Springfield is my hometown,” says Matt. “We moved here when I was very young. It’s a place I hold near and dear. I truly have Springfield’s best interest at heart.” Matt obtained a bachelor’s degree in political science from Armstrong Atlantic State University and a master’s degree in public administration from Georgia Southern University. He began his career at Effingham County Planning & Engineering, where he gained several years of invaluable experience in the public sector. He then assumed a general manager role for an industrial equipment company in Statesboro, allowing him to gain varied experiences in the private sector as well.

Investing Locally Matt is thrilled that others have seen the benefit of investing locally. Whether it’s coffee shops, taco restaurants, pizzerias or event venues like Moncrief Square, downtown Springfield has seen its share of new businesses. Matt hopes that prospective entrepreneurs will be encouraged to take that leap of faith and bring more businesses to the community. He knows that the local economy will thrive if citizens choose to shop locally, which will build the city’s tax base. “Profit is a good word in my vocabulary. I just want people to come here and be successful,” he says. Prosperity and Progress During the height of the pandemic, Matt was concerned that there would be a drastic decline in SPLOST funds, or the “local-option sales tax” used to fund various city projects—public facilities, infrastructure improvements, etc. But instead of a decline, there was an increase. “I thought our SPLOST money would take a dip, but it didn’t. It actually went in the other direction. Revenue came in

and a lot was being spent at businesses in town,” he says. Matt is proud that he and Effingham Finance Director Amber Dyson received a federal grant—following a one-year grant certification process—for the completion of a streetscape project on Main Street. Looking ahead, Matt wants city beautification projects to continue, understanding that people are more willing to invest in a place they can be proud of—one with beautiful landscapes, trees, proper lighting and inviting atmospheres. A Strong Team Makes the Difference Matt feels that one of his biggest contributions has been to “help incubate people to take risks and open businesses to invigorate the economy.” Though most would agree that Matt has played a huge role in Springfield’s progress, he insists that he alone gets little credit. “I have a great city council. I have an amazing staff here. They do so much that is not recognized most of the time. The credit lies in my staff. They play an integral role in this,” Matt says. Matt knows that the city relies on local leaders who work well together toward a common goal—leaders who have the city’s best interest at heart. “We’re going to communicate and implement whatever we think is best for everybody. I want to go with the best idea, even if it’s not my idea,” he says. What Matters Most Matt gives credit where it is due. He is incredibly proud to have his loving and supportive wife Natalie by his side. “She is my best friend. She is my rock. I couldn’t do any of this without her,” he says. The couple has a three-year-old son, Miller Payne, and a 15-month-old daughter, Carter Renn. The couple also remembers their precious baby girl, Merritt Faye, who passed away in 2017 before her first birthday. “It made our faith much stronger. I learned that you have to keep moving forward. The Lord keeps you here for a reason. It’s grace, and it’s faith,” he said. The family enjoys fellowship with their church family at The Church at Godley Station under the leadership of Pastor Darren Thomas, who has been a “tremendous asset” to them over the years. Matt’s faith, along with his genuine love for helping his community succeed, has allowed him to make a real difference where it matters. n

The Stamper’s Boutique has a great selection of gifts including jewelry, mugs, graphic tees, and Christian gifts such as Bibles, devotionals and more. Korin teaches many classes in the shop’s “Creative Classroom.” She says, “Our workshops are a wonderful activity for groups like homeschoolers, crafting clubs, birthday parties, church groups, really anyone who enjoys crafting.” A popular class is “Intro to Bible Art Journaling” which combines the love of art and Bible study. Korin says “We love being able to help our customers worship God in a creative way with art and verse.” Check the website or Facebook page for upcoming classes and register promptly as the classes fill up quickly. You don’t have to be an artist to enjoy all The Stamper’s Boutique has to offer, as Korin says “We’re here to provide education and resources to inspire your creative side. We’re so thrilled to be a part of the Effingham community. We can’t wait to meet you!”

CARTER’S CORNER

ADVICE FROM A DOG’S PERSPECTIVE A TUG OF WAR Dear Carter, I love pulling on the leash when we go for walks. My mom pulls back at me and then I know the game is on—I pull even harder. I love it. But my mom shouts my name a lot and yanks sharply on the leash. I’m not sure if she’s playing with me or telling me I’m doing something she doesn’t like. Can you help me understand what’s going on? – Elbert, Kissimmee, FL Dear Elbert, Yes I can. The old tug-of-war is a fun game to play with a human but I don’t think walk time is the best time. I think your mom wants you to walk with what is called a “slack” leash. That’s when the leash is not pulled tight the entire time during your walk. I am a very intelligent dog, and educated—I’m obedient and can type and read, among other things. But lots of dogs need cues and clear directions from humans to do things their way. And I think you are a little confused about your mom’s actions and what you are expected to do. There are lots of good training websites available, many good books and excellent trainers for your mom to consult to help you understand her. She has obviously given you some mixed signals about pulling. The key for a human is to praise you when you allow slack in the leash when you are on a walk. And we all love praise, don’t we? To get that special head rub or a smile from a human is a special thing for us. One method is for your mom to immediately walk in a different direction when you start to pull. Then, when you start to walk to catch up with her, there will be slack on the leash and your mom will praise you. When you get out in front again and start pulling— boom!—she should change direction and again the leash will slacken until you catch back up. All of this is designed to train you to leave that

“slack” in the leash and not to pull. Other methods involve the human not moving when you pull and waiting you out. The human only starts walking when you aren’t pulling. Now, he or she must praise you when there is slack in the leash, so you get the idea. These training methods take time and your mom’s patience, however, so don’t be disappointed if it takes a while for you to catch on. Good luck!

A MOVE ON THE HORIZON Dear Carter, I’m seeing a lot of boxes around our house lately. It’s making me very anxious. Are my owners leaving me? – Phineas, a feline from Bloomingdale Dear Phineas, Many families are selling their homes right now. The market is hot! This can be very stressful for the family pet. Maybe you can share some of this advice with your owners so they can make your transition smoother and you can look forward to a happy new house where you can stretch and take a good cat nap. 1. Decide how you will move your pet. Is it a car ride? Do you have a crate to keep them save while traveling? This can reduce their level of anxiety if they are secure and safe during the trip. 2. Keep your pet in a comfortable, safe space on moving day. Consider boarding your pet or hiring a pet sitter for that day. You may also put them in one of the empty rooms until you are ready to transport your furry friend to your new home. 3. Maintain your pet’s routine. In the days and weeks leading up to your move and the time after you move in, it is important to keep the daily routine as consistent as possible. Take them on their regular walks, feed them their favorite foods and keep their bed and toys around so they begin to feel some normalcy among the chaos that is moving to a new home.

Savannah Kennel Club Aims High to Procure a Pet Disaster Relief Trailer

I

t is frightening to hear or read of a disaster striking and to see the pictures of the devastation wreaked upon a community. The sense of loss—the helplessness experienced by the families affected—can be overwhelming. In addition to the destruction of property and the loss of cherished items, many families also become separated from their pets. These animals are their companions and their family members. In the midst of everything else, families agonize over when, how or even if they will see their pets again. To this end, the Savannah Kennel Club (SKC) has recently made a commitment to provide Chatham County with a pet disaster relief trailer. Members of the SKC have taken on a challenging fundraising effort to provide the monies necessary to procure a pet disaster relief trailer that can rescue, house and care for at least 65 pets during the first few critical days after a disaster strikes. Part of the funds needed will come from a grant offered by the American Kennel Club, however the grant will only cover about a third of the monies needed. As a result, SKC will be hosting several major events, the proceeds of which will go toward the additional $19,000 need for the rescue trailer. In September, Savannah will be going to the dogs—literally. And for a good cause. The month is going to start out with a two-day Fast CAT event at Tom Triplett Park on September 11-12. It may be called Fast CAT, but it’s all about dogs. This sanctioned AKC event is open to both purebred and mixed breed dogs. Com44

rankings, there will be fun runs offered for those who would like to enter their couch companions and try the sport out. Sign up in advance or race day. You can compete whether your dog is of noble lineage or dubious parentage. The dog just needs to be 12 months of age. For those who prefer a slower pace, there is a golf tournament on September 22 to benefit SKC. This will include 18 holes of golf, a cart, lunch and prizes and will be held at The Club at Savannah Harbor on Hutchinson Island, across from River Street. The Club offers a beautiful and challenging, classically designed Sam Snead and Bob Cupp course. Enjoy the play while knowing that you’ve contributed to making the disaster relief trailer a reality. ceiving from the dog community in the area, SouthEast Disc Dogs stepped up and offered to host the golf tournament for the Savannah Kennel Club. The frisbee flying canines and handlers will also be part of WagFest, a huge, two-day dog weekend to be held on September 24-25 at Tom Triplett Park. Trainers, breeders, therapists, veterinarians, rescue organizations and so many others from across the low country are coming out to support SKC’s WagFest weekend. It will be two fun-filled days of demonstrations, dog sports, food, music, vendors, games and contests, and Meet The Breed—an introduction and informational session of various dog breeds. Kicking off WagFest will be The Fast and the Furriest 5K Run and 1-mile Fun Walk where runners/walkers and their dogs compete. Participating local rescue groups will have pups for those participants without canine partners, although you can still participate without a dog. There will be swag bags, medallions, bandanas and bragging rights, so don’t miss out. Altamaha Canine Consulting is SKC’s principal sponsor for WagFest and will be on hand to conduct demonstrations for attendees. There is no admittance fee and it will be family and dog friendly, so plan to be a part of the activities and to bringing the disaster relief trailer to our area! h For more information and event signups, visit www.savannahkennelclub.org or facebook.com/SavannahKennelClub.

The Best Race SWAG

A Pawsitively Fun Race Changed Two Lives Fur-ever Story by Donna Pfendler-Merkle

T

wo year old Ayra and her seven puppies were taken to Chatham County Animal Services (CCAS) when her owners no longer wanted her or her puppies. CCAS staff contacted Renegade Paws Rescue to pull the nursing mom and her pups from the shelter into a better environment. Ayra was scared, sad, and seemed to have given up hope of ever having a happy life. Jennifer (Jen) Taylor, Director and founder of Renegade Paws Rescue, took Ayra and her puppies to foster care, where they were given time to decompress and be examined by a veterinarian. After the puppies began eating food and were quickly adopted. Ayra was spayed and taken to an adult dog foster home. A Chance at a New Start It was the morning of the Fast and Furriest Race—a unique trail race that gave people an opportunity not only to run with their pups, but also to meet and run with a pup from a local rescue. Ayra was not supposed to go to the race, but was chosen at the last minute. “To be honest I wasn’t sure she would be much of a runner, “ Jen said. “Ayra was more of a playwith-my-doggie-friends dog.” Bambi Carrino, a traveling nurse stationed in Savannah, ran track and cross country in high school. She has run dozens of half marathons, two marathons, and two ultras. She jumped at the chance to run the Fast and Furriest Race not only because it was a trail run but because it gave her a chance to run with a rescue. “I had taken a few opportunities in LA and DC to take rescues for hikes, visit in shelters, etc. to fill the ’pet void’ I was experiencing as a travel nurse.” “I was actually supposed to run with a different dog. Jen said that even though Arya was, ’short, thick, and didn’t look like much of a runner,’ that she’d ’get the job done.’ Which is exactly how I feel about myself as a runner. In fact, I think all I said to Jen was ’SAME!’.”

Bambi and Ayra were a perfect match. “I am sure I loved her before we even took a single step. We were either running or playing in the puddles and tide, which is exactly my speed and philosophy on running. You could tell she was thrilled to be out there and it was infectious. Being able to focus on her made the five miles fly by because I took in my surroundings more instead of being in my head or feeling uncomfortable.” The purpose of Savannah Kennel Club’s Fast and Furriest Race and the Paws to Pavement Walking events—in conjunction with Fleet Feet of Savannah—is to promote the importance of

heart healthy exercise for humans and dogs. “This was the inaugural Fast and Furriest Race. Organizing this event was a dream come true bringing my two loves together—dogs and running,” said Donna Merkle, Race Director and Community Outreach Coordinator for the Savannah Kennel Club. “I remember Bambi telling me about her running partner and that it was the best race she had ever run. It brought tears of joy to my eyes—this is exactly why we put so much effort into this event.” “As an avid runner and dog lover myself, Fleet Feet Savannah could not pass up the chance to partner with the Kennel Club on this freakin’ awesome race,” said

Mike Nadeau, owner of Fleet Feet Savannah and Pooler. “Our running and walking communities look forward to our events with the pups. We are proud of the part we play in bringing these communities together.” Ayra went back to her foster home, but Bambi could not forget about Ayra. She knew she wanted to adopt Ayra the day of the race but wanted to make sure it was the right decision for her and Ayra. Bambi talked about her for two days to whoever would listen, and her friends and family encouraged her to adopt Ayra. “It was very important to me to be a good, responsible pet owner. They said my amount of concern and anxiety over being a good dog mom proved that I was ready, and I am so glad I listened! I let Jen know on Monday that I wanted to be Zahra’s (formerly Ayra) furever home and on Tuesday, October 1, she became the best race swag I ever earned!” Today Zahra is living her best life. She travels with Bambi across the country on nursing assignments. She has been to Chattanooga, NYC, New Orleans, and now Tampa. Bambi has learned to be patient with herself and Zahra after a move. “I have to give myself grace and know that I’m trying my best by her, even if the situation may not be ideal. I don’t want anyone going into adopting thinking they got the wrong dog or are the wrong parent just because things aren’t perfect 100% of the time. There’s a lot to consider before adopting, but it’ll always be a work in progress whether they have a pure bred or a rescue! Despite the work, Zahra has brought so much love and light to my life and I wouldn’t change a thing!” Bambi and Zahra continue to run trails and hike wherever they go. Zahra is also a great soccer player and Frisbee catcher extraordinaire. Her absolute favorite things in the world, though, are bubbles and belly rubs! h

4 Tips to Prepare a Pet-Friendly Fire Safety Plan

A

fter more than a year of nearly constant companionship, many pet parents are preparing to leave their pets at home while they transition back to the office. With more time away from home, it’s important for families to be prepared in the event of a fire. As COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, a vast majority of pet owners (91%) said they will leave pets home alone more often, according to a survey commissioned by Kidde and conducted online by The Harris Poll. Of those, more than 1 in 3 (35%) said they are nervous about doing so. According to the American Veterinary Medical Foundation, 500,000 pets suffer from smoke inhalation and 40,000 die due to home fires. “We know people will do anything to keep their furry family safe,” said Sharon Cooksey, fire safety educator for Kidde. “We’re committed to ensuring pet owners are equipped with the right products, resources, tools and confidence to prepare their family members—both two- and four-legged—in the event of an emergency as we transition to more time out of the home.”

To help protect your pets from the dangers of home fires and train them to respond positively to the sound of smoke or carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, consider these tips from Kidde:

1

INCLUDE PETS IN FIRE ESCAPE PLANS Pets should always be included in a family’s evacuation plan. Stay aware of their typical hiding spots or locations where they often nap in case you must evacuate quickly. When you are not home, keep pets in areas near entrances where firefighters can easily find them.

2

TRAIN PETS TO APPROPRIATELY RESPOND TO ALARMS. In the event of an emergency, ensure your pets are familiar with the sound of smoke alarms. According to celebrity pet trainer Sara Carson, you should pair the sound with a command that instructs your pets to proceed “outside” or whichever term you use to identify the best way for them to exit the home. As you practice the routine, reward your

pets for positive responses. “As a proud dog mom of five super collies, I know pets are like our family, so it’s important we take proactive steps to keep them safe in the event of a home fire,” Carson said. “To successfully train your pets, make sure you keep training fun, short and always end on a good note.”

3

USE WINDOW CLINGS TO ALERT FIRST RESPONDERS In an emergency, first responders need to be able to quickly assess the number of pets in a home. Consider attaching a non-adhesive decal to a window near your front door to let rescuers know how many animals are inside.

4

MAINTAIN SMOKE ALARMS Smoke alarms must be replaced after 10 years. In addition to testing alarms once each week, check the manufacturing date on your alarms to make sure they are current. If they are older than 10 years, it’s time to replace them. For a full demonstration on how to train your pet to respond positively to a smoke alarm, visit kidde.com/petsafety. h

Effingham County

RECREATION & SPORTS UPDATES Story by Cindy Reid

November 2—SPLOST Date “Effingham has to get out and vote!” says Clarence Morgan, Director of the Effingham County Recreation & Sports Department, referring to the upcoming ballot referendum on November 2. “It’s vitally important that the voters of Effingham County know the benefits of SPLOST for our county and our community. Without the revenue from SPLOST we would not have the Clarence E Morgan Complex and many other recreational opportunities for our county.” He continues, “It’s just as important that voters know this is not a new tax, it’s an existing tax. This is a vote on a renewal of SPLOST. Nothing will change in terms of your taxes. We call it ’the SPLOST penny’ because it’s a one cent tax added to retail and other sales—so it’s something most people don’t even notice in their daily life, but it’s something that makes a huge difference in our county services.” What is SPLOST? SPLOST is a special-purpose local-option sales and use tax (SPLOST) financing method for funding capital outlay projects in Georgia. It is an optional 1% sales tax levied by any county for the purpose of funding the building of parks, schools, roads, and other public facilities. It is an extremely popular program across the state and responsible for many civic improvements. Effingham County put the SPLOST renewal on the November 2 ballot because the current SPLOST—which lasted 5 years—is set to expire in June 2022. TSPLOT passed in April and that will fund

the roads, and other transportation issues, which is different than the SPLOST on November’s ballot. The referendum will renew the SPLOST for the purpose of raising of approximately $80 million to fund capital outlay projects. Effingham County government and the city councils in Rincon, Guyton and Springfield recently reached an intergovernmental agreement regarding spending the $80 million over six years if voters opt to continue SPLOST. Effingham County and its 3 municipalities must approve project lists for capital project expenditures for revenue generated with the SPLOST. Effingham County has 2 projects lists, one for countywide projects and one for its pro rata share of funds for the incorporated area based on population. The Level 2 list is estimated to be $16 million. The unincorporated list is estimated to be $47,622,400. The Parks and Recreation Capital Projects line is $24,800,000, which is 52.08% of that figure. County Growth Morgan says “Effingham County’s is the 27th fastest growing county in the USA. County wide growth directly impacts the recreation department in terms of participation and usage of our facilities, and in order to keep pace with the growth we are experiencing, we need to continually grow our facilities.” He says the recreation department is barely meeting their basic needs for fields and gym space for all the sports teams and participants. If the SPLOST referendum

50 October/November 2021 | www.EFFINGHAMMAGAZINE.com

passes, funds they receive will be used immediately to keep pace with the growth the department is experiencing. “We are up 25-30% enrollment is our sports teams programs. Football is up, cheerleading is up, soccer is up, and girls’ volleyball is up. We are busting at the seams! We are on track to have over 80 soccer teams, including the 22 travel club teams,” Morgan says. “We don’t know what the spring sports season will bring, we most likely will have the same increase in enrollment that we are seeing in all the other sports, if not higher because softball and baseball are very popular activities.” If reimposition of the tax is approved by the voters, the vote will also constitute approval of the issuance of general obligation debt in the principal amount of $16,000,000 for the purposes of funding all or a portion of any of the projects. “The county can borrow at 1.5%, and with inflation at 3-6%, so this is a winwin,” says Morgan. “We will be able to start work right away on what we need in late 2021 versus waiting until mid2022. That puts us ahead of the game in providing much needed services.” SPLOST Penny at Work at Clarence E Morgan Complex The 120-acre Clarence E Morgan (CEM) Complex in Springfield, Ga., was built with SPLOST funds over the course of three years. “13.5 million of SPLOST funds were spent on the CEM Complex, as well as one million donated by the Josh Reddick Foundation (see article p. 10), and we want to continue our growth as the county

grows, and this is a first class facility that requires a level of first class maintenance that we need to continue throughout the years,” says Morgan. Phase One consisted of five baseball fields, walking trails, parking, concessions, restrooms, a maintenance building, a handicap-accessible playground, a smaller playground, batting tunnels, covered and lighted bleachers, a picnic pavilion and associated infrastructure and was completed in 2017. The recently completed 27,800 square foot recreation gym features two full basketball courts that can be separated by a removable folding wall to accommodate 250 spectators, as well as bleachers, public restrooms, concession with cooking, storage, changing rooms, and a small office suite. The facility serves a dual purpose as a special events center and was completed in 2020. “We have a desperate need for the CEM complex to be completed. We need 4-5 more baseball fields and 4-5 more football/soccer/ lacrosse mixed use fields. We are hoping we can add a splash pad, a skate park, the small RV park that was in the original plans, and maybe pickleball courts, and another outdoor basketball court. We will be built out through the 120 acres before we know it.” Morgan says, “This is what SPLOST does for our kids, and for our county. One little penny sure goes a long way.”

SPLOST Penny at Work in Sandhill At the other end of the county SPLOST funded capital improvements made to the Sandhill facility last year. Two new batting cages, an outdoor basketball court with benches and bleachers, 12 new soccer goals, and a soccer complex fence were all added in 2020. “We have a good start at Sandhill” says Morgan, “but we need to do more. Forty percent of recreational services are provided at the south end of the county, with 60% focused on the north end. We need to balance out services and have first class facilities at both ends of the county.” Morgan says he sees an opportunity to use SPLOST funds at Sandhill to bring it up to the level of the CEM complex in quality, if not in overall size. “We are looking to expand in Sandhill, to catch up and make another first-class facility, while maintaining CEM as a first-class facility. SPLOST needs to passed to make all this happen.” Recreation & Sports News Trunk or Treat – Oct 28, 5:30 to 7 pm at the CEM complex. Free family fun for everyone! Last year was the first time it was held as a drive through event and 500 vehicles—an increase of more than 100 cars—attended. The popular event is funded by the recreation department with support from community sponsors. Basketball Season – Registration is Oct 4 to Nov 2, Open to boys aged 5 to 17,

Girls aged 5 to 14 (age control date 9-1-21) Lacrosse 2022 – Registration is Dec 15 to Jan 15—Open to boys 10 to 14, Girls 11 to 15. For ages 6-9, a separate registration is held from Jan 15 to Feb 15, 2022. For all sports registrations, you can register online at effinghamrec.org or come by the office Mon-Fri, 8:30 am-5:00 pm. Coaching—Due to the high turnout, there are more teams than ever, and the department needs volunteer coaches at every level. If you would like to coach, please call the office at 912-754-6339. It’s fun and rewarding! New Staff Members The recreation department has three new employees, two of whom are replacing retired staff and one is filling a new position. Jeff Lonon and Ryan Sanders are the new assistant directors, and Shelane Westbrook is the new office manager. Morgan says his dedicated and hardworking staff “is why we are in pretty good shape” during this period of growth. “I couldn’t do it without them and all our wonderful volunteers” he says. But he wants one thing from the community—to get our and vote YES on SPLOST on November 2. “This raises all of the county economically. Effingham County is growing so rapidly, and we are providing services to so many, so support your county and get out and vote!” n

SOUTHERN KAFE ON 17: A Real Taste of the South Story by Katrice Williams | Photos by Tonya Perry

W

hen traveling down Central Boulevard in Guyton, it is worth stopping by one of the area’s most notable restaurant venues—Southern Kafe on 17—a true diamond in the rough. Southern Kafe opened its doors eight years ago. Co-owners Tracy and Tamela Mydell wanted to offer the community a real taste of the South; the couple wanted customers to feel that grandmama’s best Sunday home-cooked meals were right within their reach. Tracy is originally from Rincon, while Tamela is a Guyton native. Cooking has long been Tamela’s passion. However, prior to opening Southern Kafe, Tamela was a career licensed cosmetologist with 30 years of experience. Tracy has played more of a support role in the business due to his full-time career. Pursuing Her Passion “It’s pretty much my baby,” Tamela laughs, recalling the turning point in her career when she helped cater a friend’s wedding many years ago and really enjoyed it. She realized she had a knack for it all. “From there, the passion grew.” Realizing her gift and potential, friends and family encouraged Tamela to open a restaurant of her own. She contemplated the idea for some time before deciding to take the big leap. She initially planned for her new business to be part-time, but that quickly changed. “Since opening, it has been a full-time job,” she says. “We open at 6:00 in the morning, and we serve a hearty breakfast everyday—like smothered pork chops and smothered shrimp. We have some of the best sausage gravy with biscuits. We have a home-style lunch. On weekends, we offer seafood. That’s what people are looking for; they want home-cooked meals,” she says. The Menu and More Menus are posted daily on the restaurant’s Facebook page, and the menu changes each day of the week. Some fan favorites include smothered shrimp, smothered pork chops, oxtails, homemade crab patties, meatloaf and Mexican cornbread. “Everybody wants the smothered shrimp. I don’t care if it’s breakfast, lunch or dinner, they want smothered shrimp; smothered shrimp goes with everything. We make awesome meatloaf, and our Mexican cornbread is a hit,” Tamela says. Breakfast menu items include salmon

patties, corned beef hash, country ham, smoked sausage, hash brown patties, eggs and grits. Lunch items consist of shrimp or fish po boys, burgers and deli sandwiches, along with a variety of fresh salads. Dinner entrees include turkey wings, fried chicken, ham and ribs. All meals include a meat dish with two sides, along with peach cobbler or banana pudding. Customers who crave a slice of old-fashioned, moist and delicious layer cake have several tasty options, including: chocolate, red velvet, Oreo-red velvet and pound. Forty percent of Southern Kafe’s business comes from catering. They cater wedding receptions, graduation banquets and other occasions. Quality, Quantity and Customers First The Southern Kafe team prides itself in giving customers their money’s worth—a delicious and hearty meal for a reasonable price. Tamela believes that quantity is nearly as important as quality, so she gives her customers “quantity portions.” “They get their fill for a price they are happy about. I’ve been to some places where you’re hungry a couple of hours after eating,” she says. Over the years, Southern Kafe has gained their share of repeat and loyal customers, whether people stopping by for their favorite fried chicken dinner or the committed church crowd coming by for a delectable Sunday meal; Sundays have become one of the restaurant’s busiest days. Throughout the week, customers visit from all around the Lowcountry to have a tantalizing taste of the South. Tamela feels that providing great customer service is non-negotiable. She wants each customer to have an exceptional experience. “We want them to have a good experience. We want them to have a good meal with a taste that will bring them back. We strive to hit the mark,” she says. Tamela knows that none of the restaurant’s success would be possible without her Southern Kafe team, and she appreciates all of their dedication and diligence. Community Matters Tamela is thankful for the support of the community, especially during the recent more trying times. “Local is taking care of local. It makes my heart glad when the community steps up,” she says.

She will never forget the kindness the community showed her business years ago, as she faced challenges when attempting to purchase the restaurant building from the city. Many citizens and businesses advocated for the business and rallied together for the cause. “God blessed us all along the way. That support helped me and my husband keep pushing forward. People donated tables, chairs and equipment,” she says. Tamela is also grateful for the support of the Guyton Police Department—she recalls their help with a recent catering need for the hospital. Officers took time out to bag and deliver 400 plated meals to the hospital. “My story is a testimony to other people. We wouldn’t be able to make it without the support of the community; it’s community love. Everybody works together,” she says. Giving Back In addition to running a successful restaurant, Tamela and Tracy enjoy giving back to their community. Over the years, Southern Kafe has contributed meals to the Guyton Police Department, Effingham EMS and other organizations. The couple is on the executive board for CURE. They also serve on the Guyton Planning and Zoning Board and Effingham County Chamber of Commerce. Tamela also loves whenever she is able to spend time at her church home— Graceful Gospel—where she serves on the hospitality committee. “That is my happy place,” she says. n Southern Kafe on 17 (912) 772-3419 308 Central Boulevard, Guyton, GA

Melissa McBride Stille of Stille-DeWitt Health Brokerage, LLC

“I’m here to help at no charge to you.”

MELISSA MCBRIDE STILLE WORKS FOR YOU When it comes to health insurance, Melissa knows her stuff. She has been in the health insurance industry for 13 years, an independent insurance agent for four years and the sole proprietor of Stille-DeWitt Health Brokerage since 2020. With specific expertise in Medicare and the Health Insurance Marketplace, she works tirelessly to match her clients with the best health care options available. Not everyone’s needs are the same, therefore their plans and options will be different. “I do as much fact finding for individuals as I can and because my clients range from 20 to 90 years old, each one is different,” Melissa says. “I ask questions about doctors, prescriptions, anything relevant, to learn my clients’ specific health care needs so we can make the best match.” As a specialist in Medicare—the federal health insurance program for recipients over and under 65, including those who qualify through Social Security Disability—Melissa can help navigate the sometimes difficult and complicated program. She also works with people utilizing the Health Insurance Marketplace® and some group insurances. Next Open Enrollment Dates: Medicare: Oct. 15- Dec. 7, effective Jan. 1, 2022 Health Insurance Marketplace: Nov 1- Dec 15, effective Jan 1, 2022 (you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period due to a life event such as losing other coverage, getting married, or having a baby.) You may be able to get more savings and lower costs on Marketplace health insurance coverage due to changes in the law. Under the new law, most people currently enrolled in a Marketplace plan may qualify for more tax credits, resulting in lower premiums. Melissa states, “More people than ever before qualify for help paying for health coverage, even those who weren’t eligible in the past. Staying within their budget is crucial to most clients so I present multiple options enabling them to make educated decisions. Don’t assume anything—call me and we can go over your options. “ Customer Service “Insurance is complex and can be stressful for many people. ‘What do I need to do?’, ‘how do I plan for this?’ are common questions. I am here to help at no charge to you,” Melissa says. “There is never a bill for my services because I am paid by the insurance companies. I work for my clients, not the insurance company.” Melissa reviews her clients’ health policies yearly because there are annual policy changes. She is dedicated to ensuring they get the best possible policy for their needs. She even gives every client her cell number—it is also on all of her advertising so that every client, even future clients, can feel comfortable reaching out to her. “If you get a bill that you don’t understand, call me, text me a picture of it and together we will figure it out. My commitment to you continues after you enroll in a health care plan. I am here for you.” Due to current health/pandemic circumstances, Melissa may be out of the office helping clients or working from home, so please call her on her cell—(912) 239-7119—for an appointment.
