Wow! As I sit at my desk today, working diligently at getting this issue ready to send to the printer, a lot of things are going through my mind. One is….what in the world am I going to write my Publisher’s letter about. There are so many wonderful things I could say about Effingham County and its people. We have been truly blessed by each and every one of you in the last seven years. It has been an amazing journey! From our subjects, to our readers, to our advertisers….you have all played a major role in the success of Effingham Magazine. But, today, it became quite evident to me what I really needed to write about! And, that my friends, is the wonderful staff I have! Press days are always hectic. I generally have to Julie Hales, PUBLISHER apologize several days in advance as to how bad I will be before the issue actually leaves. These are the days that I am not generally liked by my employees. And, anniversary issues are worse. We have a very short window of time to get things done….and done on time….especially when there is a party planned. How in the world could we have an anniversary party without a magazine to show? Today has been a different experience. I have been calm as a cucumber all day. In fact, my people have made several comments to me today about the smile on my face….and my ability to keep myself “in check.” Hmmm! Imagine that! But, in all honesty, I have been able to do this because of them. From the moment I stepped into the office this morning, each and every one of them has gone above and beyond the call of duty….team work….I am so proud! Lane Gallegos, you are amazing! This lady makes us look good! She is the responsible party behind the beautiful layout and design you will see on the following pages. I am blessed to have her as a part of my team! She and I have spent many late nights together making sure these magazines go out when they should. She is a trouper! Lea Allen, thanks so much for all you do! From the moment you walked in the door this morning, you have done everything in your power to make sure we stayed on track. I appreciate the numerous times you came in my office to lend a hand, or just ask if there was anything else you could do to help. Candice Shaufelberger, thank you! You did such a great job designing ads and making sure Lane had everything she needed to send the pages to the printer. I appreciate you and all you do for this company. DiAnna Jenkins….from salesperson to writer in .2 seconds…..just like Super Woman. I don’t know what I would do without you! You are always willing to help in any way possible, and you always come through for me when I need you. You’re the best. And, last but not least, Barbara Anderson. Boy did I take you out of your comfort zone today. But, you did it with a smile on your face. Your positive attitude and willingness to help at “crunch time” speaks volumes for you! You’re a definite keeper! I am blessed…..I have the best staff in Effingham County…..I love you guys!

Ann Purcell
at home
with Mrs. Purcell • Story by KATHRYN VANDENHOUTEN
A
nn Purcell is a name in Effingham County that needs little introduction. She served as State Representative for nearly eighteen years in the Georgia General Assembly, and is a well known member of the community. It is almost impossible to keep up with her involvement in local organizations. She wears many hats. But one thing is for sure—she is a lady committed to a life of service. Born and raised in Tattnall County, Purcell is a native Georgian who graduated from Georgia Southern as a teacher of math and science. She has lived in Effingham County for thirty years and has had multiple careers along the way. From teaching school to baking cakes, painting and even selling real estate, Ann Purcell has done it all. Even after being elected into public office and serving on countless boards and committees, she still acts as office manager for her husband’s medical practice. And though she has been blessed with various talents in addition to her knack for politics, Purcell maintains that her favorite job is being a wife to her husband, Dent, a mother to her three children and their spouses, and a grandmother to her eight grandchildren. Family has always been a top priority for Purcell. In fact, she has never taken a job without her family’s approval. “Things that I have done have always been a family decision, because in my opinion, you can’t do a good job without the support of your family,” says Purcell. Luckily, her family has fully backed her in all of her appointed positions, from the Georgia General Assembly to her current position on the State Board of Transportation. Purcell’s family instilled in her the importance of community involvement from a young age. Her father

was in elected office for thirty-two years in Tattnall County, and her parents were always out in the community meeting people and trying to make their town a better place. “It was easy for me to be involved in my community where I was raised because that’s the way my parents were,” she explains. Multitasking has never been an issue for Ann Purcell. She has taken on more responsibilities than most people could tackle in a lifetime. She has served on the Effingham County American Cancer Society Board of Directors, the Georgia Arts Politics Commission, the Coastal Transportation Roundtable, and the Jekyll Island Authority Oversight Committee, to name a few. During her time in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1991 to 2005 and again from 2009 to 2013, she served as the Chairman of Public Safety and Homeland Security and also served on the committees of Appropriation, Economic Development and Tourism, Education, Higher Education, and Health and Human Resources, among others. Purcell’s love for her community runs as deep as her roots to the Salzburgers, who originally settled in Georgia from present-day Austria. She can trace her ancestry all the way back to the 1600’s. One of her favorite pastimes is studying genealogy and writing books on the subject. She is a member of the Effingham Historical Society and the Georgia Salzburger Society, where she served as President for two years. This October, the government of Germany is honoring Purcell with The Order of Merritt for her involvement in historical research and the relationship she has worked to build between Germany and America. “I’m excited about that,” she says of the prestigious award. Researching Georgia’s history is one of her favorite things to do. “I spend a lot of time in the state ar-

chives,” she says. Purcell beams as she shows off her collection of genealogy books and opens up an old map from the 1700’s. She points to an unrecognizable state: “Did you know that Georgia used to extend all the way to Texas?” She may no longer be a school teacher, but her love of educating still remains. To this day, she quizzes her grandchildren and has them take notes of the history of each place they visit together. Purcell has always placed a great deal of importance on education. She had a hand in the Career Academy as well as the Technical College being constructed in our area. In 2005, she was appointed to the State Board of the Technical College System of Georgia, and she served as the Chairman of the Governance, Operations and Audit Committee. She has also been Chairman of the Georgia Education Liaison Committee. “Jack Hill and I worked hard to see that the Technical College was built here,” says Purcell. “He and I also worked very hard, along with Lieutenant Governor, Casey Cagle, to see that we have a Career Academy here.” Purcell says that better education is not only important for the citizens of the community, but for industries that are considering bringing their businesses into our area. “Education is what they need,” stresses Purcell. “Education is key, and I’m not going to step away from that.” Her passion for education lead her to serve on the Effingham County Adult Literacy Advisory Committee as well as the Hope Scholarship Study Committee. She has also served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Armstrong Atlantic State University and was recently honored for her service on the Board of Trustees of Georgia Southern University. Purcell never hesitates to give her opinion on how to make her community a better place. “My opinion is free and I don’t mind giving it to you,” she says with a laugh. “It might not work out, but you’re going to know how I feel about the issues.” Though not everyone shares her political beliefs, Purcell values opposing ideas and always welcomes different opinions. She believes that politics is all about listening to the people and working as a team to achieve a common goal. “Even though you think strongly about something, compromising is many times what you have to do,” says Purcell. “Learning to compromise, learning to listen, and thinking about the subject matter is a key I would stress to everyone.” Her time in politics has taught her the value of compromise and consideration. “Don’t go after individuals,” says Purcell regarding politics. “You need to go after the issue that you believe in and work toward those goals, but also take into consideration other people’s
thoughts and what might be a better solution.” Many people might be hesitant to live a life in the public eye, but Purcell says she has never thought twice about being under the microscope. “I know what my life is and how I’m living it, and I feel very comfortable being out and sharing that,” she says. In politics and in her personal life, she has no hesitation sharing her opinions. “Whatever I do is what I believe,” says Purcell. She maintains that everything she does is based on the foundation of her Christian beliefs. “We could not have asked for the Lord to bless us better.” And she certainly has been blessed. In 2012, the city of Rincon honored her as Humanitarian of the Year, and she was also named Citizen of the Year in 2012 by the Effingham Sheriff’s Department. She has been awarded The Girl Scouts’ Woman of Distinction Award, among countless other honors. Perhaps the honors Purcell holds dearest are those she has received from the military. She was Honorary Commander of the 165 Charles Dick Award and the Minuteman Award by the National Guard for her continued support of the military. “I’m still very supportive of our military and their families,” she says. She is extremely supportive of our local law enforcement as well. Being a part of getting the Georgia State Patrol Post 42 was a project that was particularly dear to her. Though Purcell has met many fascinating people throughout her career, she was particularly honored to greet President Bush on one of his trips to Georgia on Air Force One. “To be able to say, ‘you’re here in the most wonderful state that exists in America,’” she says. “It was quite a treat.” She maintains that meeting with the leader of the free world should be no different than talking with the members of the community. One of the secrets to her success is staying humble and never wavering from her family values. “Titles don’t mean anything,” she explains. “No matter what you do, if you’re not yourself, people will see right through you.” After countless jobs and titles, she says she is “still just Ann,” and she could never see herself living without serving her community in some way. When asked if she would ever retire, she simply says, “I don’t see myself sitting back. I think that I will always be here because of my love for this community and the people in it.” Ann Purcell has served her state in many different capacities. She is a well respected woman in the community, and she has dedicated herself to a life of service. “I’m still Ann,” she says. “And I’m here for you.’

Chief Corey Rahn
From Volunteer To
Chief
27 Years of Committed Service • Story by SHERRY COOK
Photography by GLORIA SHEPPARD •
“The City of Rincon is very supportive of our department, and we have the best equipment and fire department in the area.”
C
orey Rahn has been a volunteer firefighter since the day he turned sixteen. That Tuesday night on April 22, 1986, was the first time the determined young man participated in training drills with the City of Rincon Fire Department. That was twenty-seven years ago, and only a few things have changed. Rahn is still a volunteer with the department, and he still participates in the Tuesday night training exercises. However, instead of just being a volunteer firefighter, Corey Rahn is now the Chief of the City of Rincon Fire Department. When asked what drove him to volunteer at such a young age he said, “I always wanted to do it when I was little because my dad and my uncle did it.” Rahn’s father, Rayford H. Rahn, Sr., was a volunteer firefighter with the City of Rincon Fire Department in the 70’s. His uncle, Lamar Rahn, was the Rincon Fire Chief at one time. Corey took over as Fire Chief in September of 1995. Chief Rahn has lived in Effingham County his entire life, and relates that he comes from a long line of Rahns in the community. The Rahn Family is one of the founding families that settled in Ebenezer, Georgia, in 1734 after fleeing Salzburg Austria. Rahn attended Effingham County High School when it was the only high school in the county. He says, “I hated when they split the high schools. I love the Rebels; they will always be the home team.” Around this time, Corey met his future bride, Traci. “I met my wife cruising in Springfield in the summer of 1986,” he says with a smile. The two have now been married for 25 years, and they have two children. Michael C. Rahn, Jr. is 18 years old and graduated from Effingham County High School this past year. He is following in his father’s footsteps and is now certified as a volunteer firefighter. Michaela L. Rahn, their daughter, is 13 years old, and according to the chief, keeps him and his wife busy attending her competition cheer events throughout the year. The City of Rincon Fire Department keeps Chief Rahn busy as well. He estimates that he puts in at least 10 to 20 volunteer hours each week, and 60 hours when working on projects such as building a training center. Of course, you also have to add in the hours he spends on actual emergencies and fire calls. When he is not involved with duties at the station, he is working with the family business. M.C. Rahn, Inc., owned and operated by his wife and son, runs a 24 hour wrecker service, a land
18 October/November 2013 | Effingham Magazine
clearing and septic tank installation service. Rahn says he puts in long hours most days of the week. “I love deer hunting, and that is about the only downtime I ever get,” states Rahn. Corey Rahn believes without a doubt that he is a blessed man to have such an understanding and supportive wife. “Traci is my rock, my best friend, my business partner, and the best mom and wife anyone could ask for,” he says. Sacrifice is something his family has experienced over the years because of his duties with the fire department. “I have left her in the grocery store with a cart full of food, at restaurants during the middle of a meal, or at 3:00 a.m. in the morning to take an emergency call,” he says. That’s how things are when you are required to keep a fire radio with you at all times. The Rincon Fire Department was first organized in 1954, and in 1979 was incorporated and became known as the Rincon Volunteer Fire Department. In 1996 it combined with the city and became the City of Rincon Volunteer Fire Department. As of 2010, it has been known as the City of Rincon Fire Department. Until 2010, the fire department was operated strictly on a volunteer basis. Today there are currently 45 volunteer firefighters, including Chief Rahn, and five paid employees in the department. To become a volunteer firefighter, a person must be 18 years old. Insurance requirements have changed since Rahn began as a junior volunteer. After 90 days, those who have applied are voted on by the members of the fire department. If accepted, a nine month probation begins and the applicant must be certified by the end of the probation. “The City of Rincon is very supportive of our department, and we have the best equipment and fire department in the area,” Chief Rahn proudly boasts. The fire department operates out of three stations in the area, and they own twelve fire trucks at the moment. This is a big change from the two pumpers that were in operation when he joined in 1986. A training center is located behind the fire station on West 17th Street. Rahn says this is a valuable training tool for the department because it has two live fire rooms where they can control the temperature. It has a 32 ft. rappelling tower, an SCBA maze unit, confined space training prop, a wall breach, a garage door cutting prop, a propane and natural gas prop, and other various extremely beneficial training features. There was an official ribbon cutting
ceremony for the center in August of 2012. The City of Rincon Fire Department volunteers and employees train every Tuesday night. They practice their two minute hose drills, long hose lays, vehicle extractions, search and rescue drills, and wild land fire drills. In order to stay a top rated fire department, the firefighters must be well trained and on top of their game. Fire departments all over the nation are given ISO (Insurance Services Office) grades each five years. The best possible grade is a one and the worst is a ten. The year Corey Rahn joined the fire department their grade was a 7/9. Over the years, with the guidance of Rahn and the hard work and dedication of all the firefighters, the grade has significantly dropped. In 2013, the department received a rating of a four! Chief Rahn says, “Only 126 other departments in Georgia and 4,613 in the nation scored that well.” That is an outstanding achievement for the City of Rincon Fire Department. It is also a welcome accomplishment for home owners. Lower ISO ratings will result in lower prices for homeowner’s insurance policies. Another tool the fire department has acquired that helps keep costs down for citizens is the mile long hose. This is a 6,000 foot hose the department purchased that will bring insurance premiums down for citizens outside the city limits. Chief Rahn is a hardworking and dedicated volunteer whose efforts have positively affected the City of Rincon and its fire department. “I do it for the people, the people of my district,” he says. He also says his future dream for the department is to achieve an ISO rating of three on their next inspection. If things continue as they have under his watch for the past 27 years, that three will soon be achieved.

A Master Carpenter Working for the Lord

orris Oglesby says that he’s been building houses since he was 12 years old, so it’s no surprise that he is the founder of the Effingham County Habitat for Humanity International. What may be a surprise is that Oglesby is 90 years old, and his good health and active lifestyle enable him to work alongside other volunteers who help build Habitat houses. Building houses and helping those in need are two things that have been woven into the fabric of Oglesby’s life, and he is determined to keep Effingham’s Habitat for Humanity a vital part of our county’s efforts to help those in need. When Oglesby was 12 years old, he learned how to use a hammer, and he put his new skill to good use. When many 12 year old boys might be using a hammer to build a tree house, Oglesby was using his to help build houses for others. The year was 1935 and the times were hard. “We were one big community, and we associated with each other on a daily basis, and everyone in the community would help each other out,” said Oglesby, “and I’ve always been, in my mind, willing to help.” He knew first hand what it was like to need help. There were 13 children in his family, and his father met a tragic death when Oglesby was only six years old, but the family endured. “I think my mother was a saint,” he said. Some of his older brothers started working in heavy construction, and Oglesby joined them, expanding his skills and becoming a master carpenter. They built big. “Hospitals are the most complicated to build,” he said, “and bridges are the hardest.” But Oglesby didn’t seem daunted by any challenge. During World War II, his master carpentry skills were used to help in the war effort. As a civilian, he was the foreman of the construction of the Moody Air Base in Valdosta, GA, and he was a carpenter when helping to build cargo ships in Savannah and a rifle range for military training in NC. When he was drafted he served as an aviation engineer in the Air Force. During the 30 months that he was deployed in the Pacific, he built roads, bridges, hospital barracks, and air strips on the Pacific islands. “We went in behind the infantry, and as soon as they killed the

Japs, we built an air strip, and in a few days our planes were coming in,” he said. After the war, Oglesby worked for contractors all over the Southeast, and when he was 65, he retired “for the first time.” But Oglesby has never been one to sit around and do nothing. For the next four years, he was part of a “church building mission” for Rincon United Methodist Church. “In four years, with volunteer help, we built seven churches across the Southeast,” he said. During those four years, seeds were being planted for his “building mission” to continue in Effingham County. “Everywhere I went I ran into men who worked for Habitat,” he said. But before he could dedicate the time to become involved with Habitat, he jumped back into his construction career and worked for Rieves E. Worrell Co. until he was 80 years old - then Oglesby retired for the second time. “My last job was the Jepson Museum,” he said. There is a bit of pride in his voice and perhaps a bit of regret – you see, this man would probably work forever if the good Lord would let him, and at 90 years old that’s what he’s doing – and once again his work is in the mission field. Oglesby could finally put his whole heart into starting an Effingham chapter of Habitat for Humanity International, and Effingham’s Habitat was founded in 1995. Since that time, 16 homes have been built. Two more are started now, and one is for a military family. Most people know that Habitat for Humanity builds houses for those in need, but many may not realize that Habitat is a worldwide, nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. In the Bible, 1John 3:18 says that “Our love must not be just words, but it must be true love which shows itself in action.” That is what Habitat does, it “brings people from all walks of life together to put their faith into action by making affordable housing and better communities a reality for everyone.” To build a Habitat house takes about three to four months and costs about $35,000. Profits from Effingham Habitat’s ReStore help with the costs, as-well-as fundraisers and donations from churches, businesses and individuals. “We always need property,” said Oglesby. “We have bought some, and some has been

donated.” Lots of volunteers are needed to help with the actual building of each house. One Habitat house was built on the Ephesus Church grounds on Goshen Road. “On one workday there were over 100 people volunteering,” said Oglesby. People were putting their faith into action. Many community service workers help with constructing Habitat houses to work off their sentences. “We have a devotion every morning before we start,” said Oglesby. “I think we are changing lives before they leave – taking them out of a bad environment and giving them a chance to make things better in their lives, because we’re not condemning them. We’re helping them.” “Many skilled workers are dedicated to Habitat,” said Oglesby. “Electricians, carpenters, plumbers and sheet rock men….” It’s obvious the list could go on and that Oglesby has a deep gratitude for each of them. “We work mostly every Saturday,” he says simply. Oglesby’s career in construction began with a hammer that he used to build houses for those in need. Habitat calls his actions ‘The Theology of the Hammer’ – “It’s about Christian partnership and the belief that everyone can use the hammer as an instrument to manifest God’s love.” The Theology of the Hammer’ has definitely been put into action in Effingham County, and it’s not just the men in our county who have put in the physical labor. Women and high school

students have also built houses for Habitat; in fact, students at Effingham High School have built four houses! “I can teach anyone to use a hammer,” Oglesby said, and he gives the example of one of the houses that Effingham’s Habitat for Humanity built, which he refers to as ‘The Ladies Built House.’ “All ladies built it,” he said. “I was the superintendent, so I know how to work with the ladies. Some of them took a long time to learn how to use a hammer – you’ve got to be patient with them!” The ladies obviously learned how to use their hammers, and ‘The Ladies Built House’ is now someone’s home. A hammer is a simple tool, yet Oglesby has used it to do great things “The Lord has blessed me,” he said. “I’ve never been where I could not work.” His work has been a blessing to others, but he did finally build himself a tree house – when he turned 90!
On September 25, Effingham’s Habitat hosted a ‘Breakfast with Jesus,’ to set goals for the balance of this year and the new year. About 40 people including preachers, laymen, and Habitat people attended, and there will be another meeting next month. “Our goal is to involve all the churches,” said Oglesby. “There are still a lot of people who need help.”

amily reunions are occasions when extended family members assemble to share a meal, talk about old times, and catch up with loved ones. Some families may hold their reunions every year or so, and some may only get together once in a lifetime. Rarely are they held every year on the same weekend for fifty straight years. There is one such reunion that is held each year in Springfield that is known as “Zitt’s Ponderosa Labor Day Campout.” The founders of this annual reunion were Angus Clinton Zittrouer and his wife, Lucie Rae Hinely Zittrouer. Mr. Zittrouer was a family oriented man who thought it would be nice to get his family members together once a year for an extended week-

end of eating, relaxing and visiting. He invited his and Lucie’s brothers and sisters, as well as each family’s children, to the first annual family reunion at “The Ponderosa” on Labor Day weekend in 1963. Mr. and Mrs. Zittrouer were blessed with four children during their many years of marriage; Norwood, Ray, Nell and Peggy. Their children are responsible for continuing the tradition. It is obvious that it is a chore that they love, and they do it as a tribute to their parents. “The Ponderosa” or “Zitt’s Little Poderosa” is located on the Zittrouer Farm on Old Dixie Highway in Springfield. The farm that once belonged to Angus Clinton Zittrouer is a beautiful 80 acre plot of land situated just on the outskirts of town. “The
Ponderosa,” where all the reunions have taken place, is a beautiful, countryside campsite that sits on three acres of the farmland. The setting where the annual reunions take place is serene and tranquil, and the campsite is nestled among the trees that provide an ample amount of shade for visitors. The landscape is dotted with log cabins, swings, picnic tables, a fire pit with seating, an old outhouse and updated outdoor toilets, and several historical markers that highlight areas of importance. The original barbecue pit, where “Daddy Clint” prepared his famous chicken, is located next to a large building that serves as the kitchen/dining hall that is complete with the tools necessary to feed the attendees.

family tradition
Story by SHERRY COOK Photography by GLORIA SHEPPARD
A rustic kitchen complete with screened windows, tables large enough to hold the food prepared throughout the weekend, cook stoves, a sink, cabinets adorned with checkered curtains and a fireplace is located at the center of “The Ponderosa.” Group photos that have been taken over the years hang next to the fireplace, and family members can lovingly remember the past reunions. Just outside is a covered area complete with picnic tables and an iron dinner bell used to signal meal times. A detailed itinerary is planned ahead of time for each reunion and sent to those who will be in attendance. This year the children of Clinton and Lucie began planning in January for the highly anticipated
50th reunion. “On Sunday, we had 160 people at “The Ponderosa” and 100 on all the other days,” says Peggy. Just what exactly goes on at “Zitt’s Ponderosa Labor Day Campout?” The question should be what doesn’t go on. This is a large family that loves having fun! Cooking, eating, sleeping, board games, skits, scavenger hunts, bike riding, hayrides, volleyball, corn hole, womanless beauty pageants, singing, watching old family movies and church services are just a few of the long list of events that have taken place on Labor Day weekends over the past 50 years. Preparing the food for a crowd this size can be an event in itself. These are hearty meals that are prepared, such as pork
steak with baked potatoes, bacon, eggs, and grits, and even fried chicken and roast. Homemade ice cream and sweet tea are always on the menu. Of course, the tradition of barbecue chicken at the Monday lunch has remained after 50 years. Norwood, Ray and the other men make sure the barbecue pit is cleaned and ready for action. Barbecue chicken was Clinton Zittrouer’s specialty, and there were rules that had to be followed each year concerning the chicken. The chicken had to be washed, quartered, salt and peppered, and it had to be at “The Ponderosa” by 9 a.m. on Monday. This is a rule that has never changed. There is a sign next to the original barbecue pit that reads: “Uncle (Daddy) Clint’s Bar-B-Q Pit: Every Labor

Day men would stand and cook in this very pit. You might even see a little spit. Undeniably the best bar-b-que chicken ever! Charcoal cooked with special sauce. Over 14,000 served.” Needless to say, chicken is an important part of the weekend. There have been a variety of sleeping arrangements at the annual reunion over the years. Since many of the family members live within a few short miles of the campsite, they return to their own homes to sleep. Some have slept in tents, trailers, old buses, pop-up campers, or the log cabins that are located at “The Ponderosa.” Enjoying nature and the outdoors is a big part of the reunion weekend. Entertainment is an important part of each year’s gathering. Keeping the children amused with good, wholesome fun is what the family members look forward to. A weekend without computers, televisions and cell phones is a welcome break. Good clean fun is had by all at “Zitt’s Little Ponderosa.” The younger children bring their bikes each year to the reunion and ride them around the campground, while the older kids get to enjoy the nighttime bike rides to Springfield. They tape flashlights to their bikes, and of course are supervised by adults. This year Peggy Smith and Carroll Zittrouer led the parade of children into town. This is always a big hit with the children. It is told that the children love the reunions so much that they leave crying each year, wishing the good times and fun could continue. An event took place this year at the reunion for the first time, and it was a big hit with the family. A church service was held on the premises, and one of their own led it. Rev. Darren Thomas, a former pastor at First Baptist Church in Springfield, preached his message from a pulpit made out of a tree stump that was taken from the property. They even had a choir, complete with keyboard, to serenade the congregation with Christian hymns. What an amazing way for those attending to give thanks to God for all of their blessings. Dress codes are in place for each day of the reunion, and attendees may be asked to wear a t-shirt from a past year on Friday night, dress tacky on Saturday, and wear their new shirts on Sunday. In 2009, attendees were asked to wear green, pink, or blue on their feet, and in 2010 Saturday night was hat night. This is just another way they keep things fun for everyone. “Zitt’s Ponderosa Labor Day Campout” or “Zitt’s Camporama,” as it has been called in the past, is more than a family reunion. It is a tribute to the family who started the tradition. It is a weekend filled with crazy games, wonderful food and good old fashioned family bonding. Family was the most important thing to Clinton Zittrouer, and his children have continued his legacy. “No matter who you are or where you have been, you will always have a place at the Ponderosa,” was this respected man’s philosophy that still rings true today in this loving family.

CITY OF RINCON SPOTLIGHT
SETH ZEIGLER The Director of Golf at Lost Plantation
E
ffingham County is home to a beautiful golf course that has been labeled a “hidden jewel.” Lost Plantation Golf Club, located off of Fort Howard Road in Rincon, has evolved into one of the most challenging and wellmaintained courses in the state of Georgia. The Director of Golf at Lost Plantation is Seth Zeigler. Seth, a native of Effingham County, has been with the club for three years. He began his employment there as the Golf Superintendent and held that position for two years. Now as the Director he oversees the entire course, the grill, the pro shop, the cart barn and all maintenance at the club. Zeigler attended college at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Georgia. He was focused on getting a degree in Forestry and Wildlife in order to become a park ranger, but changed his major after working part time at a golf course. Seth received two degrees from the college in 1996; one in Commercial Turf and the other in Golf Club Management. Upon graduation, Seth began an internship at Colleton River Plantation in Bluffton, South Carolina. He remained in their employment for three years. For the next ten years, he worked at Spring Island Golf Club, also situated in the South Carolina Lowcountry. Seth began as Assistant Superintendent at the Arnold Palmer golf club, but was eventually promoted to Superintendent. Zeigler relates that there are some great perks that go along with his job. At the opening of the Crescent Pointe Golf Club in Bluffon, South Carolina, he had the opportunity to meet Arnold Palmer. Seth has also met Ernie Els, Ben Crenshaw, and numerous other professional golfers over the years. Working in Effingham County has been great for Seth and his family. He and his wife, Shae, have three children; Evan (8 years old), Shelby (5 years old), and Cullen (newborn). “I get to spend more time with my family now that I am working at Lost Plantation Golf Club, and I get to go to school functions with my kids,” he says. The Lost Plantation Golf Club is owned by the City of Rincon. Zeigler had always worked in the private industry with golfers, so working for the city was a new challenge for him. He found he
34 October/November 2013 | Effingham Magazine
needed to educate the city council members as to what improvements the club needed to make it a thriving business. In order to make Lost Plantation a better golf course, the greens needed to be revitalized. Zeigler was focused on working with the city in order to achieve that. The city purchased maintenance equipment which improved the cut of the grass, which according to Seth is key in getting the grass to grow right. That was three years ago and obviously it worked. Zeigler says that the rounds played at the club have increased dramatically, and one of the main reasons is because the refurbished course is now more enticing to seasoned players. They have also seen an increase in membership because of the change in the quality. Seth says he hopes to see an even greater increase in rounds played at the course as conditions improve even more. Some of the other improvements the City of Rincon has implemented at the course since Seth started working there have been a new irrigation system, remodeled meeting rooms at the clubhouse, restrooms on the course, and the purchase of fifty new golf carts. The Chamber of Commerce is trying to bring people to Effingham County, and Seth believes the club can play a big part in that. Lost Plantation Golf Club is the only course in the county. With Zeigler’s expertise and guidance, the future looks bright for the club.

hen you walk through the door at El Real Mexican Restaurant in Rincon, you immediately have a feeling of home. You are always greeted with smiling faces, a warm hug or a friendly hand shake. They want all their customers to feel welcome - and like they are part of the El Real family. El Real opened its doors almost 12 years ago. Brothers Salvador and Javier Fuigeroa are the owners. This dynamic duo have done great things with this restaurant and both are very grateful for the people of Effingham County. The brothers were born in Queretaro, Mexico. Salvador came to the United States at 16 years of age and Javier at 17. Both started out working in restaurants soon after arriving in the U.S., making Houston, Texas their first home. From dishwashing, to waiting, to bussing tables, to cooking, these brothers made it a point to learn everything there was about the business. Hence, the dream of opening their own restaurant was definitely going to become a reality. Salvador was doing construction work in Rincon about 13 years ago. He saw that Weisenbaker Road was a busy spot. Then he noticed a building that he thought would make a perfect location for their “dream.” He called his brother Javier, who was working at a restaurant in Jacksonville, Florida at the time. They called the owner of the building, and as they say, the rest is history. Like most mexican restaurants in the United States, El Real
offers a “Tex-Mex” flair. But, as Salvador says, “We offer TexMex with a spin of authenticity. We have more flavor than the average Tex-Mex, that is what makes us different.” The brothers quickly called Effingham home. They love the small town atmosphere, it reminds them of home as they are from a very small town in Mexico. Salvador says, “I consider myself a Mexican Redneck. And I am very proud of that.” The brothers consider their establishment a true family restaurant. In fact, both their mother and father joined them in Rincon about 3 years ago. Mom and Dad are both working in the “family business.” Dad does all of the prep work and Mom makes all the homemade tamales. A lot of the food on their menu is from family recipes. Javier says, “We make everything fresh. We make our own chips, our own salsa and our own guacamole dip - all from family secrets.” Both Salvador and Javier agree, when their customers walk in the door, they want them to feel special. Salvador adds, “Our staff treats our customers the same way we do. They know how important it is to us. We have the greatest employees.” When asked what makes El Real so special, Salvador says it all as he quickly responds, “You do! Our customers make us special.” So, the next time you are looking for a place to take the family to dinner, give El Real a try. They will make you feel right at home.

Have you ever eaten at The Loft Café? If you haven’t , you are missing out on a great dining experience. The Loft offers some of the best food in Effingham County. This, coupled with a great atmosphere and impeccable service, makes this eatery a favorite hot spot. Zachary Wooten and Bruce Kirwan opened The Loft Café in Rincon three years ago. After only one short year in business, The Loft had to move into a bigger location. The original location of the café had an actual loft inside. With the move, these two young gentleman struggled with the idea of having to change the name of their business. After much deliberation, they decided to have a mural painted in the new location that is an exact replica of their original loft. This allowed tem to keep the name that their faithful customers had come to love. The entire restaurant is tastefully decorated and the entire staff make you feel right at home. Zach and Bruce are extremely grateful for their clientele. Bruce stated, “ We have been very blessed in our first three years. We have experienced a constant increase in our number of patrons.” Part of their success story is a direct result of their customer service. Bruce and Zach have both worked in the food industry their entire lives. They know how important it is to not only offer quality food, but to back that quality with great service. Standard fare is gourmet sandwiches, flatbreads and salads. They also offer home made soups and have daily specials. “We try to bring a little more class with it,” said Zachary. Flatbreads are the most popular menu item by far. “They’re almost like a gourmet pizza,” said Bruce. The most popular one is the Buffalo Chicken Flatbread - a grilled chicken breast with a buffalo sauce base and mozzarella, toasted until it’s crisp on the bottom. This duo is always adding new and exciting items to the menu. They have specialty salads during the summer. In fact, they have been voted best salad for 3 years in a row and best sandwich and best overall restaurant in Effingham County in 2011. They both smile when asked about this accomplishment. “You can go somewhere and someone can throw food in a basket and toss it on your table,” said Zach. “Our focus is on food quality and presentation. We like to make our customers feel special.” The Loft Café is a about familiar faces, excellent service, and great food at reasonable prices.
Bruce Kirwan, realtor The real estate industry has certainly seen better days than it has in the last several years. The market took a nasty turn, not only in Effingham County, but pretty much all over the United States. But there have been some significant changes lately. Although the market is not where it once was, it has definitely started making a positive change. The change in the market has made some people take a look at the possibilities in the industry. One of these people is a familiar face in Effingham County. Bruce Kirwan, co-owner of The Loft Café, has recently obtained his real estate license, Bruce got his license in August and made the decision to join the team at Coldwell Banker Intercoastal Realty in Rincon. “The change in the market seemed like a great opportunity for me. I have always been interested in real estate. This felt like the perfect time for me to get my license. I think this can be a very promising career, “ stated Bruce. Bruce has been a resident of Effingham County for the past 23 years. He is a graduate of South Effingham High. After graduation, Bruce has spent 10 years working in Effingham County. He says, “ It has been great being able to work in the community that I grew up in. I feel like I know this county pretty well. I am very excited to be able to start a new career in addition to my restaurant, and to still be able to do it at home.” With that being said, Bruce will be specializing in properties here in Effingham County. His knowledge of this community is an asset to people wanting to purchase in the area. Bruce will remain an integral part in the day to day operation of The Loft Café. Being co-owner of this establishment will allow him flexibility to pursue this exciting new opportunity. He adds, “ I am so grateful that the success of my business has afforded me this opportunity. Starting the restaurant was a no-brainer. People have to eat. Well, people also have to live. Now I can help them find that perfect home.” So, if a familiar face is what you like, call Bruce when you are ready to buy or sell. He is ready to “serve” you.

gnann’s fix-it shop “LOCAL BUSINESSES REINVEST IN THE LOCAL ECONOMY 60% MORE THAN CHAINS.”
Bowers Gnann Jr founded Gnann’s Fix-It in 1964. The shop repaired lamps and small home appliances back in those days. Times have long since changed. Now, our society is more fast paced. People don’t try to repair these things anymore. They would just rather discard them and go buy a new one. This change has made service shops like these rapidly disappear. Although this small, family-oriented business has grown considerably from its humble roots, the core values of sales and service has not shifted in the least. Gnann’s Fix-It is now owned and operated by Clarence and Charlie Gnann, two of the sons of founder Bowers Gnann. Both Clarence and Charlie grew up working in the store and both know the business from the ground up. Gnann’s now specializes in lawn equipment and ATV’s. The company has grown considerably in its 49 year history. They now have ten employees. This enables the brothers to run a smooth operation and give the best service possible to all their clients. It is the oldest and most complete establishment of its kind in the area. Sales and service is what Gnann’s is all about. You’ll find the most courteous and experienced staff to assist you. “You’re going to find knowledgeable people to deal with,” said Clarence. “We will help you with your problem and walk you through whatever you might need.” Stocking the most compete parts inventory around, Gnann’s will fit you with the right part or equipment to do the repair and offer tips on how
to fix it yourself. If you’d prefer, the fix-it shop will perform an expert repair for you. Gnann’s is the place to purchase your next lawn care machine. They carry Snapper and Exmark products. They also carry Stihl hand held equipment. They have a variety to choose from, from small push mowers to large riding mowers. If you are ready to get serious about buying that ATV you’ve had your eye on, Gnann’s carries a selection of Arctic Cat ATV’s. These are great for hunting, joy riding and they make great Christmas gifts. “People assume that the big chain stores are cheaper than us, but not necessarily,” said Clarence. “We can be very competitive if people just give us the chance. We handle our own warranty work. Shopping with us guarantees great products and quality service with no need for searching for repair work.” If friendly, reliable, and honest service is what you are looking for, Gnann’s Fix-It Shop is the way to go. Whether you need new equipment, need old equipment repaired, or are just seeking the expertise of qualified and responsible mechanics, Gnann’s Fix-It can help satisfy all of your lawn and garden and ATV needs. Gnann’s Fix-It Shop is located at 1015 South Laurel Street, and is open Monday thru Friday from 8am to 5:30pm and on Saturday 8am to 12pm. Their telephone number is 912- 754-3745.

gastroenterology consultants of savannah At Gastroenterology Consultants of Savannah, each patient’s care is managed by an impressive team of physicians who are recognized leaders in the field of gastroenterology. Specializing in the most advanced procedures and technologies, Dr. Travis Wiggins commits himself to provide his patients with the highest quality of prevention and treatment of digestive diseases in a caring, compassionate manner. Dr. Wiggins received his Bachelor of Science degree in biology at The Citadel in Charleston, SC. He earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina, where he also completed his Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine. He completed his fellowship in Gastroenterology at Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans, Louisiana. Dr. Wiggins does an enormous amount of clinical research that keeps him at the forefront of his field. When asked what he emphasizes on the most he answers with out hesitation, “screening colonoscopy”. “Let’s be frank, the very idea of having a colonoscopy is unpleasant to say the least. The thought of being chained to the toilet with self-induced diarrhea is, well, uuhhgg! Truth is, the majority of people are asleep during their colonoscopy and with new ‘bowel cleansing’ products that are available, preparation for the test is somewhat easier. In fact, most people who have had a colonoscopy will tell you that the worry is far worse than the actual preparation and test. Yet, some folks still procrastinate, even though they know that a colonoscopy can prevent colon cancer from even starting”. Gastroenterology Consultants of Savannah, is launching a colorectal cancer screening campaign. We want to make sure people are getting their colonoscopies because it is a cancer that can be treated. Did you know that colon cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death among men and women? However, the rate of colorectal cancer (colon cancer) has been decreasing for most of the past two decades. One of the reasons is because more people are getting screened for this disease. To help you get rid of your fears and get on with the idea of having a potentially life saving colonoscopy ask yourself the following questions to see if you may be at risk. 1) Are you 50 years old or older? 2) Have you or anyone in your immediate family such as, parent, child, sibling, or grandparent, been diagnosed with: Colon cancer? Benign colorectal polyps (adenomas), grape-like growths on the lining of the colon and rectum? Multiple cancers such as, breast, ovary, uterus or other organs? 1) Do you eat a high-fat diet, with lots of red meat and saturated fats, and very little fruits and vegetables, whole grain cereals, breads, or beans? 2) Do you have inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s disease, or Ulcerative colitis?
If you answered yes to one or more questions you may be at a higher risk for colorectal cancer. I encourage you to talk to your personal physician about what screening tests you may need and when. Regular screening and a healthy lifestyle prove to be the best preventative measures against colorectal cancer. Try to eat foods high in fiber such as; whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Increase your calcium intake and decrease your intake of fats found in oils, butter and red meats. Avoid charcoal broiled foods and cured meats and exercise regularly. Remember colorectal cancer is highly preventable and curable. For more information on Colorectal Cancer, visit the American Cancer Society web site at www.cancer.org Gastroenterologist Dr. Travis Wiggins cares for digestive disorders of the esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine (colon), liver, pancreas and gallbladder. Patients may be seen by appointment at the Effingham County Hospital, Springfield location or at the main office in Savannah.

international mortgageCompany, Inc. What is a mortgage broker? A broker counsels potential customers on the loans available from different lenders. They also counsel on any problems involved in qualifying for a loan, including credit problems. They take the borrower’s application, and then process the loan. Processing includes compiling the file of information about the transaction, including the credit report, appraisal, verification of income, employment and assets, and so on. When the file is complete, it is handed off to the lender, who underwrites and funds the loan. Why Choose a Mortgage Broker? The main advantage of utilizing a broker is that they can shop among hundreds of competing lenders on a daily basis. Lenders price loans based on supply and demand. Some weeks, lenders might have fantastic rates, only to raise them shortly thereafter to slow down the volume. It happens all the time. So lenders are constantly “in and out of the game” depending on market dynamics. In addition, lenders are constantly changing their guidelines to offer more innovative and streamlined loan structures and products. Dealing with only one lender may limit your ability to qualify; cost you time, and get you a higher rate than you should be paying. International Mortgage is a brokerage business based in Rincon, Georgia committed to bringing you genuine information of value on home buying and home refinancing. Jane Hughes, owner of International Mortgage, says, “It is no secret that the mortgage industry has been changing drastically over the last several years. We are not exempt from this trend. It has been unfortunate to see all the changes, but we stay on top, making sure we know all the latest programs to fully help our clients.” International Mortgage offers all the standard loans, such as FHA, VA, USDA (for rural development) and a host of conventional loan options. Jane got her start when many small hometown banks were making construction loans, which are short-term financing agreements. These community banks were not in the mortgage business so they offered Jane
the opportunity to close the mortgages on the new construction they were financing. “New custom construction is what I pride myself in,” says Jane. “I was in the retail lumber business before I went into the mortgage industry. I feel like I’ve had sawdust in my blood for over 30 years.” This is also a great time to refinance your existing mortgage and save lots of money. Homeowners should consider refinancing if they would like to reduce their term and lower their payments.
You can expect prompt, courteous and knowledgeable service from Jane Hughes at International Mortgage. Give her a call.

coldwell banker intercoastal realty
Sue Anderson One of the biggest accomplishments for a Realtor is to win an honorable award. Two of our local Real Estate agents, both licensed with Coldwell Banker Intercoastal Realty, can make that claim. Sue Anderson and Dee Bankston were recently each named one of the Top 10 Coldwell Banker Agents in the state of Georgia for listing and selling units. Owner, Brandi Talton and Broker, James Presnell stated “We are proud of both Dee and Sue for their accomplishment. They are both hard working agents that thrive on making the home buying process a pleasant experience for their clients. Their efforts have certainly paid off in their real estate career.” Coldwell Banker Intercoastal Realty opened their doors in July of 1999. They proudly have thirty-three active full and part agents with the company. Coldwell Banker Intercoastal Realty is one of the leading listing and selling companies in Effingham County. They have a solid reputation in the business. It is no surprise that they have some of the top agents in the State.
Dee Bankston
Sue Anderson has been a licensed Realtor for almost 30 years, both in Georgia and Florida , where she owned and managed her own real estate company. She is the proud mother of one daughter, Danielle, who just started medical school at MCG. When asked about the award, Sue stated, “It’s nice to be recognized, but the truth is, I really love what I do. “It is a blessing to succeed at what I enjoy so much and also have the pleasure of working with a great group of agents”. Sue went on to say, “There is not a better feeling in the world than helping a buyer find their dream home, or assisting a seller sell their home”. Helping people buy or sell a home, is really about helping people transition into a new phase of their life. I spend a lot of time educating my clients through the entire process, in the end it is very rewarding. Sue attributes her years of success and longevity to integrity, old fashioned hard work and strong negotiating skills. Dee Bankston has been licensed since 2009. In 2012 she received her Brokers
license and joined the team at Coldwell Banker as an Associate Broker. She says, “My move to Coldwell Banker has been extremely positive. They have a lot of good support and the agents seem to have the same level of work ethic as I do.” When asked about her success as an agent, Dee responded, “I was taught early in my real estate career to work hard, whether you had a deal going or not. You have to work to make things happen. This taught me discipline which helped me learn more. It made me a better Realtor.” Dee added, “I really like what I do. It can be hard to make a living at this, but I love it. I love meeting clients and helping them find a home.” When Dee was asked how she felt about winning the award, she thought it was great. It made her feel all of her hard work has paid off. When it is time for you or someone you know to buy or sell a home, be sure they contact Coldwell Banker Intercoastal Realty and ask for one of their many great agents.

FIRE ISLAND GRAPHICS
Promoting your business is a key element to your success! The old saying “If you hide your light under a bushel basket.....” is true. You have to let people know who you are. There are many ways to do this.....advertising in local publications, billboards, radio spots.....but, regardless of your advertising avenue, you must first brand your business. Branding your business starts with your image. Have a logo designed by a professional. Then, take that design and show it off. Put it out there for people to see....on signs, t-shirts, hats, cups, business cards, banners, decals....grow your brand, grow your image! That is a service that Sharon Mason has been offering in Effingham County for over 25 years. Sharon is the owner of Fire Island Graphics in Rincon. Fire Island Graphics, formerly SM Promotions, recently moved into a new location at 105 Commercial Court at the corner of Goshen Road Extension. They offer many items for you to “put your name on.”
And word has certainly gotten around that Sharon can put a name on about anything. She recently received a phone call from a production company that heard “she was the best” at what she does. This company wanted her to do a special project for them and she agreed. She was awarded the job of labeling some of the apparel being worn in the new movie currently being filmed in Savannah, Sponge Bob Square Pants II. Sharon is very excited about this opportunity. This just goes to show that hard work and reliable service pay off. Sharon started her business by selling and making promotional items from home. This started 25 years ago, shortly after marrying her husband, Steve Mason, a resident of Meldrim at that time. As her home business began to grow, Sharon saw a need to open a store front in the Effingham community. Liberty Graphics, Sharon’s first store front business, opened in Rincon in 1998. Her business was so successful, that in only one short year, she was approached by a buyer and decided to sell and head back home. After operating at home again for years, Sharon decided it was time to open another location. The birth of SM Promotions came about a few years ago. Fire Island Graphics now offers everything from business cards to banners, t-shirts to hats, signs, coffee cups, and koozies the list goes on and on... They do custom embroidery, screen printing, signs and decals. Sharon and her team can put your name on almost anything! They also carry unique school items and do a lot of work for both the Effingham County High Rebels and the South Effingham Mustangs. For the golfers in your life, they carry golf apparel....even custom golf bags. If you have a need to get your name recognized, call Sharon at Fire Island Graphics. She will give you quality work, on time, every time.

westcott’s martial arts academy
Respect, trust and open communication are the foundations of strong families. Taekwondo training promotes these values and more. It’s a way of life that fosters self-control, discipline, perseverance, confidence, humility, loyalty and integrity; all essential components in maintaining a good family structure. Westcott’s Martial Arts Academy, a local family run business owned by chief instructor, Tom Westcott, teaches these values to their students. Tom has been training in Taekwondo for 34 years. He started his training in New York City and studied directly under two of the top Korean masters in the United States. He holds black belts in four different styles of Taekwondo and today focuses on sharing the benefits of martial arts training with both youth and adults. The benefits for youth who study Taekwondo are increased self-control, discipline and self-confidence. Taekwondo is an activity that helps children learn to focus, and within a short period of time these young students learn to be more respectful at home and how to show respect to their seniors, juniors and their peers. Westcott’s youngest student, five year-old Devan Tanner, demonstrated these values not long ago. He was at a football game getting bothered and poked by other kids and chose to ignore them, even though he could have easily taken them out. When his grandmother, Shirley Shuman, approached him and asked why he didn’t fight back using the Taekwondo he’d been learning, Devan calmly responded, “Because I’ve also learned self-control and respect. Mr. Tom taught me that.” Shirley,

stunned responded, “And now you’re teaching me Devan.” Many people believe that you have to be physically fit, strong and fast to learn Taekwondo. That’s false. You can start at any physical level and practice it for your entire life. Westcott describes, “The study of Taekwondo is a journey, a marathon; not a sprint.” In today’s fast paced and demanding world where adults have limited time, Taekwondo is the one activity that can give you multiple benefits all year round. Westcott’s adult Taekwondo program helps develop and maintain a fit body, sharp mind and reduces stress while learning practical techniques that can aid in self-defense situations. Westcott’s Martial Arts Academy is independently owned and operated, but licensed through the ATA (American Taekwondo Association), headquartered in Little Rock, Arkansas. ATA is one of the largest Taekwondo organizations in the United States. There are now four ATA schools in the greater Savannah area including Rincon, Pooler, Richmond Hill and Savannah. The owners of these schools train together, support each other and work together to provide the best Martial Arts training to their students each week. Taekwondo is an activity the entire family can do together. There is something in it for everyone, and everyone advances at their own pace. So, if you’re ready for you, or your child, to experience the benefits of Taekwondo don’t wait; call Tom at Westcott’s Martial Arts Academy today.
fuller chevrolet Three things come to mind when Tommy Arden is asked what the Fuller Chevrolet name means to him. Value, integrity and service, those are the key elements that make Fuller Chevrolet one of the top automotive dealerships in the Southeast. Tommy Arden, General Manager, has been with Fuller Chevrolet since 1991. Actually, he has been with this Chevrolet dealership for 46 years, under 5 different ownerships, including his own. “When our customers walk in the door, we want them to have the best experience possible. We want them to have fun. We want them to see and feel how much we really strive to make them feel they are part of the Fuller family,” stated Tommy. He goes on to say, “One of my primary responsibilities as General Manager is to make sure Mr. Fuller receives a return on his investment. But, it’s a lot more than just making money. It is making sure that every single customer is treated courteously, whether it is sales, service or parts. When a person walks in our door, whether they end up doing business with us or not, I want them leaving with a picture in their mind of ‘Wow, those are some nice folks.’ We want everyone to have a great experience.” When you walk into Fuller, you are sure to see a familiar face. The longevity of its employees is monumental. They have some employees that have been with them for over 20 years, and many others with more than 10 years under their belts. “We don’t have a lot of turnover here. It is a great place to work. Our customers can’t have fun if my people aren’t having fun. Everyone here has a passion for what they do, and it shows,” says Tommy. Is a customer going to get a better price at Fuller Chevrolet than any other dealership? “Absolutely,” Tommy says, “But,
that is not the total picture. It’s the whole process. It’s not just about selling and repairing cars. It’s about building long lasting relationships with our customers so they will feel comfortable returning.” Fuller Chevrolet serves all of Effingham and West Chatham, and other surrounding areas. They are huge supporters here in Effingham of many organizations. burns insurance associates Insurance is a vital part of everyone’s life. Whether it is to protect your family, your home, your auto, or even your health, everyone is in need of insurance of some type. With so many companies to choose from, it can make your decision difficult. That is where Burns Insurance Associates helps. They have the knowledge and know how to educate you so you can make the right choices. Burns Insurance has been around for almost 10 years. They have been an integral part of the Effingham community. Brooke Burns Graham, owner and agent, was raised in this county and is very much a stake holder here. She graduated from Georgia Southern University with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 2003. She then began working for New England Financial (a Met Life Company) selling life insurance and investments. It was during this time that the idea to open a local agency came to mind. In July of 2004, Brooke opened the agency and focused on the Property and Casualty business. Her focus for the business was to protect the client’s homes, offices, businesses, autos, property, health and life. Basically, all aspects of someone’s life were very important to her. The belief in the company is that, as an independent agent, they can represent a variety of different carriers which gives them the ability to meet most any need of the client. Brooke states that, “By being an independent agency, we are free to represent multiple insurance companies which allows for more choices and a better value for our clients.” I also feel that there is a tremendous value in dealing with a local agent and steering clear of online insurance purchases”, she says. Burns Insurance is the place to purchase insurance that will protect you and your family. Family is important here and service is given with commitment and pride. “I have a vested interest in this community and I’m committed to doing business face-to-face and being your advocate in times of need”, Brooke says. “That is why Burns Insurance is here and why we strive to do our best.”

von’sauna salon
Having a natural artistic ability is something Janny Hostetler knew she possessed ever since she was young. By the time she reached high school, she knew she wanted to be a hair stylist. The creation of new hair styles and hair coloring is a form of art. Janny decided to combine her passions and open Von’Sauna Salon eight years ago. Janny comes from a large family consisting of 5 sisters. Vonsauna was her maiden name. After her father passed away, keeping his name alive was very important to her. What better way to do that than to name her salon after him. The staff of Von’Sauna consists of Janny Hostetler, Heather Sheffield, Kim Mass, Colette Ostrander and Heather Aldrich. The combined experience of these
creative women is over 50 years. You can count on each of them to provide a personal touch that you will love. The wonderful customers they have met through the years have become like family. To enhance their skills, each stylist takes continuing education classes. These training sessions, along with beauty industry shows, help them keep up with the latest trends. They learn about the hottest color, cutting and styling techniques and how to use products to create that perfect look. One of the newest trends is steam infusion. This technique straightens hair powered by steam. It propels conditioning ingredients deep into the hair and seals products into the cuticle for incredible shine fortified results.

the cottage of art & custom framing Nestled behind International Mortgage between Hairtenders and Gregory’s Custom Homes lies the new location of The Cottage, which was started in 1985 as a hobby by Beth Lathem Pye. Beth, a draftsman for the Corps of Engineers, and her husband Lenny prayerfully chose to make framing Beth’s new vocation. This would allow her to spend more time with their family and in local Christian ministries. The Cottage has blossomed into a full time business. Commercial contracts have allowed Beth to keep the business successful through the economic downturn. Now she sees a new trend with more people coming back to custom framing. New business growth prompted Beth to recruit additional help with deliveries and business management, her sister Mary Jane Callaway. Mary Jane is the former owner of Callaway & Co. Salon. A cosmetologist since 1991, she closed her business to be a stronger presence at home for her family. After living in Pennsylvania for two years, Mary Jane came back searching for employment. While helping Beth part time, she worked as the Event Secretary for EAW and then as a Financial Manager in Richmond Hill. Beth and Mary Jane have always enjoyed working together in creative endeavors. Quickly Beth saw Mary Jane’s potential and that she had an eye for creating frames which enhanced the client’s art. In September, the duo opened a new store front. With artistic energy in abundance, the pair are eager to design for each client. Beth and Mary Jane, being polar opposites, bring different perspectives to the creative process. They believe each client is an individual and each creation is unique. According to Mary Jane, “Art should evoke an emotional response in its owner and it is those feelings and memories you are preserving when you invest in custom framing”. Beth’s friend, Monique Rogers, frequently reminded her, “If it’s worth remembering, it’s worth framing.” Over the 16 years that Monique operated Picture Perfect Photo Restoration and Framing, she and Beth were good friends instead of competi-
tors. Frequently they would help each other with large projects and even attended training together. Monique’s death July 29th has left a painful gap in the business community. Beth and Mary Jane would like to continue to educate clients about conserving art and keeping memories alive for years to come. Many people are not aware that environmental factors can destroy their treasures. Light, moisture and contact with acidic materials can quickly deteriorate paper born or fabric art unless you invest in conservation measures. With the new store front, The Cottage has expanded to include items created by local artisans and authors. Frogmore Willie’s carvings along with Ardra Hartz’s glass art and Jill Allen’s sterling silver jewelry are a few of the items they hope to offer Effingham County. Now you can pull out your diploma, grandma’s doilies, your son’s favorite baseball, Granddad’s pipe collection, or the lifesize of Elvis on black velvet! You have the opportunity to have your memories and treasures around you with the confidence they are preserved and artfully displayed rather than tucked away for safe keeping,

badcock home furniture & more “I would like to thank the residents of Effingham County for all their support. Without you, we would not be where we are today,” says Jeremy Nease, owner of Badcock Furniture. Two years ago, Jeremy purchased the Badcock Furniture store in Rincon. In this short period of time, they have remained in the top 30 of 350 stores. “This is due largely to our loyal customers. It is all possible because of the support from the community,” stated Jeremy. If you have been to the store and walked their showroom, it is time to go back. They are clearing out furniture from the showroom floor and bringing in new items. Just like all trends out there, the same holds true to furniture. Badcock Furniture strives in keeping up with the ever changing styles. You will find rustic, contemporary, traditional and everything in between. Don’t forget about your floors. Badcock also has a flooring department with carpet, vinyl and laminate flooring available. A new vinyl floor they carry is the Fiber Floor by Tarkett. This new beautiful and practical flooring is designed with woven fiberglass, foam and tough resilient wear layers; much thicker then traditional vinyl flooring. The flooring installer is a local Effingham resident, William Johnson. You can be sure he will take care of you from the free estimate to the professional installment. Consider Badcock Furniture your one stop shop for your home. There is no need to travel to different stores to get what you need to fill your home. You will see when you enter the brightly lit showroom a variety of items from furniture to mattresses, electronics to appliances, gun safes, flooring and lawn equipment. There is some fantastic news out there for those that are interested in selling or buying real estate. The Georgia Association of REALTORS statistics for August shows rising sale prices! Sales are up 20% and listings are up 1%. Median sales price in Georgia rose 37% in August. If you need to sell, now is the time. Kim Goode and Emily Pigman have definitely noticed the increase in sales. Their inventory is drastically reducing. Kim says, “It is nothing for us to list a house and have it sold in three weeks. It has happened to us several times.” Emily adds, “We just can’t keep inventory. Buyers are still finding great deals, but urgency is a must because things are going fast.” Due to the increase in business, Kim and Emily knew they needed to add to their team. Melissa Groves started with the team taking care of all the administrative work. Also licensed, Melissa has buyers and is becoming a buyer’s agent. They both brag, “I don’t know what we would do without her. ” Emily states, “It is amazing how hiring the right person will improve the efficiency of your business. We are much more productive now.”
With three people on their team, they always have someone available to meet with clients. Even though the team is busy with buyers and sellers, they can still be found at Emerald Plantation located off of Blue Jay Road in Guyton. Emerald Plantation, built by Tippins Homes, is a beautiful community with tree-lined streets, shaded lots and mature landscaping. This community is unlike any other community in the county. If one of their plans is not what you are looking for, or doesn’t meet your needs, you can bring your plans to owner Chuck Tippins. He will have your plan or ideas drawn by an architect and custom build your home. The amenities center is planned and drawn by the architect and the ground breaking is scheduled soon. Real estate is always a challenge, but with this awesome team, there is not a situation they cannot handle together. They are dedicated to Real Estate and their customers. If you are in the market to buy or sell, call Kim and Emily. See for yourself the extent of their marketing skills and dedication to you. Past clients would gladly testify on their behalf.

THERAPEUTIC EMBRACE MASSAGE
Attending Savannah School of Massage Therapy in 2002, one during the day and the other in the evening, Bonnie Smith and Jessica Honeycutt never met until graduation. After graduation, Jessica began working at Greenbrier Spa in Savannah. A week later, so did Bonnie. Neither knew the other would be employed there. Jessica recognized Bonnie and they became instant friends. “Starting a new profession and seeing a familiar face made the change much more comfortable,” stated Jessica. The new friends worked together for almost nine years at one of the most sought after luxurious day spas in Savannah. Both gained so much experience in the spa environment. Bonnie began as Lead therapist and held that role for almost seven years until leaving. Jessica created a custom relaxing, yet therapeutic, technique that incorporates Swedish, Deep Swedish, Deep Tissue and Neuromuscular massage. It helps relax her clients as well as address chronic pain and muscle soreness. In 2011, Bonnie embraced a new opportunity to work with a chiropractor. This position freed up her schedule and gave her the opportunity to be close to home with her child. Jessica remained at Greenbrier, which by this time, was renamed The Heavenly Spa. Six months ago, the two started casually talking about going into business together. The more they thought about it, they realized they both loved the idea and knew they wanted the business to be located in Effingham. “We wanted to be right in the
heart of Rincon. This is where it’s happening!” mentions Bonnie. They saw their vision come to light almost two months ago. On August 25th, Therapeutic Embrace Massage opened its doors. The office emanates a very calming, serene and beautiful atmosphere. Bonnie says, “We do what our clients ask us to do. We want our clients to feel comfortable and come back.” Everything has fallen into place throughout the preparation and opening of the business. Bonnie adds, “owning a business feels awesome. I have enjoyed all the learning that comes with opening a business and marketing myself. I feel God has placed me here and opened a door for me.” When asked what Jessica thought of the process, she smiled and lit up. “I have enjoyed the creating part, from business cards to rack cards. Creating the name of the business was fun. We wanted the name to encompass what we do; therapeutic work in a relaxing environment and embracing the needs of our clients.” If you are feeling overworked and stressed and need to relax your body and mind, how about a Swedish massage? If you are pregnant and past your first trimester, how about a prenatal massage to relax tense muscles, ease sore spots and improve circulation and mobility. They also offer hot stone massage and reflexology. Don’t wait to feel relaxed and stress free call Bonnie and Jessica at Therapeutic Embrace Massage and embrace wellness through the power of massage.
