ach year we highlight some pretty amazing athletes in our area...but, this year, I think we have stepped up our game. Anyone who knows me, knows I am a pretty big sports fan. So, when this issue rolls around each year, I am pretty pumped about it. The college football season just got under way and I couldn’t be any happier. This is indeed my favorite time of year. And, on top of that, we got to put together this great issue of Beaufort Lifestyle! Our annual sports issue is on the following pages...and it is sure to be one you will read from cover to cover. Julie Hales, PUBLISHER Look at this talented young lady on our cover. Izzy Stone may have come across golf in an unusual way, but now, the game has become her passion. This young lady has big aspirations for her future in golf...and something tells me she just might make it. Then we have another talented young lady next...Jayda Scheper. Jayda is a Junior at Beaufort Academy. She led them to their first ever South Carolina Independent School Association State Championship last year. Not surprising for a girl that started swinging a racket in her walker! Then we have three time winner of the IWF Junior World Championship, CJ Cummings. CJ is not stranger to Beaufort Lifestyle as we have featured him before. But, we sure couldn’t leave him out after this major accomplishment. Read his story to see where he’s at today and what he’s been up to. We also have a great story about the Golf Pro out at Dataw, Chris Fearn, and all the volunteer work he does for veterans. A new Sand Shark is in Beaufort. Her name is Olivia Geisel, and you may see her pole vaulting her way to a victory for USCB. And, we have an amazing young lady who is a cheerleader (and more) for Battery Creek High School. Man, this is just a good issue...not that I’m biased or anything. All kidding aside, I do hope you enjoying these stories as much as I have!

T

eenagers with big dreams are pretty common. But finding one who is doing what it takes to make those dreams a reality is not common at all. Izzy Stone, a 16 year old golfer from Beaufort, is one of those rare people whose work ethic matches her dreams. Her dream is to play college golf, join the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tour and make the 2024 United States Olympic team. And, she is dedicating her whole life to making that happen. It only takes a few minutes with Izzy to recognize her determination and drive. You can see her passion for improvement and love for the game of golf. Fortune may have brought golf to Izzy, but it is her competitive nature and grit that have allowed her to make an incredibly rapid progression as a player. Izzy, the daughter of Bill and India Dickinson, found golf by chance. In 2011, her family was chosen to be a part of ABC’s Extreme Home Makeover television series. In addition to a new home, the family was gifted golf clubs and one free golf lesson. These went in a closet only to be pulled out days before the lesson expired. It turned out to be quite the fortuitous find because Izzy was a natural. Shane Lebron, the golf pro that taught the lesson, was blown away by her natural talent and encouraged her parents to have her continue to be trained, even offering to do it for free. Those free golf clubs and free lesson turned into a lifestyle and in just five years of playing, Izzy has turned into one of South Carolina’s best female junior golfers. Initially Izzy’s only goal was to get her scores low enough to play in college, but that all changed on March 15, 2017 when a friend mentioned the Olympics. After this conversation, the idea took root and Izzy began researching what she had to do. This has become her driving goal. Izzy’s life revolves around golf. She has sacrificed many of the luxuries of an average teenage life because she is determined to prove

her doubters wrong and achieve her goals. There are no late nights out. She missed Beaufort High season opening football victory over A.C. Flora because she had a tournament the next day. When asked what she does outside of golf, she hesitated before talking about going to her friends, sporting events or to the movies. Izzy wasn’t just blessed with a natural swing. She clearly has an undeniable work ethic and incredible determination

to improve, to succeed and to reach her goals. She said she loves the honesty and integrity of the game, the way the scorecard tells the truth. “It’s hard and it’s mentally draining. Sometimes you get better and sometimes you get worse, but when you see your score go down there is no better feeling,” she said. Izzy and her family made the decision to homeschool to allow her to focus more time and effort on improving her game.

www.BeaufortLifestyle.com | September 2018 11

A typical day will have her on the range at Legends Golf Course on Parris Island around 8 a.m. working on a variety of shots for several hours. After a break for lunch and studies, she heads back out to the course to play 9 holes before heading to the Sanctuary on Cat Island for her Beaufort High School team practice. After practice, she does more school work and then prepares to repeat the routine again the next day. Right now, she has high school team matches on Tuesday and Thursday before heading off to play an individual event on the Peggy Kirk Bell Tour on weekends. Proving again that she is driven to be her best, she has been known to head out to the lighted Marine Corps Air Station range after a tournament to work on shots she struggled with that weekend. When asked what helps her continue to improve, she mentioned her goal of playing in the Olympics, her work with coach Cody Carter and her sessions with Sea Pines Director of Performance, Matt Cuccaro, for helping her put all the pieces of her game together at the same time. According to Izzy, her biggest challenge is the mentally draining nature of golf and improving her ability to battle self-doubt and stay confident day to day and shot to shot while learning how to let go of a hole that didn’t go the way she wanted it to. Carter, the 2017 Hilton Head PGA teacher of the year and current head pro at Savannah Quarters Golf Club, was glowing when he talked about his pupil. He described Izzy as a hard worker, maybe the hardest working player he’s ever coached. He went on to say that “her drive and motivation is phenomenal and her discipline to say hey my friends are going to a party but I’ve got to work on my game is unbelievable for a player her age.” He added that she is extremely coachable and does exactly what she is asked to do all the time. Like others, when asked what the best part of her game is, he quickly responded by talking about her swing, her ability to drive it off the tee. Carter was bullish on her future, saying that if she continues to work as hard as she is now, continues to progress the way that she has and continues to focus on the present and what is right in front of her, all her future goals are in reach. Izzy has been a member of the Beaufort High School golf team since 7th grade and has been named to the all-region team each of the last three seasons. She says the pieces of her game have been falling into place more consistently and she has been shaving strokes off her scores consistently. Last fall she won the Parris Island Ladies

12 September 2018 | www.BeaufortLifestyle.com

Golf championship (the championship came with a reserved parking place with her name on it, but unfortunately since she was only 15 she couldn’t drive a car to park in it). Also, last fall, she narrowly missed the all-state team but finished 16th in the 2017 South Carolina High School League Class 4A State Golf Tournament shooting an 82-80, an impressive pair of rounds for a 15 year old high school sophomore. This summer, she won the Hilton Head Island Junior Golf Association Summer League which earned her a spot in the South Carolina Junior Golf Association Tommy Cuthbert All Star tournament where she finished in 3rd place. In that tournament, she broke 80 for the first time shooting a 79 on her way to that 3rd place finish. Her success has continued this fall as she has been the low medalist in all three of her high school matches with Beaufort High School. She continued to shave strokes with a career low 77 and come away with a 2nd place finish in the Peggy Kirk Golf Southeast Series finale at the Wescott Plantation in North Charleston. You can follow Izzy with the Beaufort High girls golf team. Find their schedule at bhs.beaufortschools.net/athletics

JAYDA SCHEPER Tennis is in her Blood

story by Nathan Livesay

14 September 2018 | www.BeaufortLifestyle.com

photos by Susan DeLoach

W

hen Jayda Scheper was asked how long she has been playing tennis, she looked bewildered for a minute before saying “For as long as I can remember.” Her father and coach, Larry Scheper, volunteered that she was about two years old when she started, “I’ve got pictures of her swinging a racket in her walker.” Tennis is definitely a family affair for the Schepers and their love for the game has created a unique father-daughter bond. Jayda, a 16 year old Junior in high school, is an accomplished tennis player already. This is her 5th year as a player at Beaufort Academy, where she plays #1 in Singles and Doubles. In 2017, she led Beaufort Academy to their first ever South Carolina Independent Schools Association (SCISA) state championship after a pair of runner-up finishes earlier in her career. She’s been named to SCISA All-State team as a freshman and sophomore and was a member of High School Sports Report All State team following her sophomore season. She’s a three time’ Most Valuable Player’ for the Beaufort Academy girl’s tennis team and accomplished a rare double as she also won a state championship this spring playing for the Beaufort Academy boys team. Scheper just started her junior season by leading Beaufort Academy to a season opening victory over Bluffton High School and her goals for this season include another state championship and making the all-state team again. Following the season she will train the rest of the year for the American Tennis Association Hardcourt National Championship to be held in Florida in July of 2019. Jayda likes playing tennis because she feels like she gets the best of both individual and team sports. It’s a team

game, but it also has the individual aspect to it. She says the game has taught her to focus, to be patient and to believe in herself. She used to play volleyball, even attempting to play volleyball and tennis at the same time one season. But, because both sports seasons are at the same time, playing both just prevented her from fully committing to either. She credits what she’s learned from playing tennis with helping her succeed off the court as well. She illustrated these points by describing a match on the road against St. Andrew’s in Savannah where she fell behind 5-2 because she was allowing herself to be frustrated and impatient and this resulted in her hitting bad shots, but after taking time to mentally regroup and play more patiently, she was able to rally and win the next five games to take the set and match 7-5. Larry Scheper coached Beaufort Academy to state championships in both girls and boy’s tennis last season and has a long and impressive playing career as both an an amateur and a professional player. Playing for her father creates some pressure to succeed as she attempts to live up to her father’s impressive tennis trophy collection. But Jayda was quick to say that that pressure comes only from herself, not from her mom or dad. This pressure hasn’t hurt their relationship though. When asked her about her role models and inspirations, she started by naming her father. “My number one role model is my dad, obviously, because he’s been an amazing tennis player and done amazing things. Tennis has brought him amazing opportunities.” Jayda and Larry work together teaching the game of tennis to youth here in Beaufort and have also played together in mixed doubles events. Larry loves coaching her “it is really nice

to have a good relationship with her on and off the court. We’ve been playing and I’ve been coaching her since she was two. Sometimes it's difficult when she wants answers on the court, but it’s something she has to find out by herself. It’s really nice coaching your kid, going through the ups and downs, more ups than downs, with them,” he says. Jayda is just as impressive off the court as she is on it. Beaufort Academy’s former athletic director, Neal McCarty, said “She is well respected and she respects others as well - she motivates teammates, her integrity helps make her an integral part of

www.BeaufortLifestyle.com | September 2018 15

every team and group that she is a part of. Jayda is a person of outstanding character, and the type of young lady that younger players can and should look up to." Jayda clearly has big plans beyond high school. She wants to play college tennis and study to become a lawyer. Her dream school is Stanford, but she is also considering the possibility of playing at Howard or her father’s alma mater, Grambling. When she’s not playing tennis, Jayda enjoys singing as a member of the Beaufort Academy Chorus, the Blue Notes, working a part time job at a clothing store and helping her father Larry teach tennis at his near daily tennis clinics. Last spring, she won the T. Reynolds Robinson Scholarship given annually to a Beaufort Academy sophomore who exhibits strong leadership and athletic ability and the respect and friendship of classmates along with academic achievement. When I asked her about winning this award she said “It was really an amazing experience. I was really happy to get that, I got a little emotional because I feel like I do work hard, because I know I have to, I absolutely have to. School is number one to me and tennis is number two. I have to get to college because I want to be able to take care of me and my family.”

CJ CUMMINGS

Three Time Winner of the IWF Junior World Championship story by Cindy Reid

20 September 2018 | www.BeaufortLifestyle.com

photos by Susan DeLoach

B

eaufort Lifestyle has been following C.J. Cummings for several years, starting when he was first brought to our attention by his Team Beaufort Olympic Weightlifting coach Rayford Jones. Every year, every meet, every lift just drives home the fact that C.J. Cummings is a world class athlete who is not only going places, the places he’s gone are already in his rear view mirror! This July C.J topped even himself, when he set an astounding record by winning three gold medals and winning the IWF Junior World Championships for the third consecutive year. Of his incredible win he says, “It felt good. I didn’t realize it at first, you know you finish your event and then someone told me and I was in shock. No one else has ever won it three years in a row. This one was beautiful! ” “Following a historic performance by U.S. weightlifters at the 2017 Senior World Championships, the next generation of Americans kept the momentum going at the IWF Junior World Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. In the eightday event, U.S. athletes won 18 medals, marking the most successful showing ever for Team USA at the competition. The U.S. men won five medals, including three golds by CJ Cummings. Already a five-time youth and four-time junior world champion prior to 2018, Cummings led the way for Team USA by sweeping the men’s 69 kg. class. His winning snatch (140 kg.) and clean & jerk (176 kg.) added up to the winning total of 316 kg.

These marked Cummings’s third junior world titles in three years in clean & jerk and total weight, while he won snatch for the first time. Cummings, of Beaufort, South Carolina, is coming off a season in which he set a new senior, junior and youth American record in the 69 kg. category. www.teamusa.org For those new to the C.J. Cummings fan club, here is a brief run down. At age 11, he started weightlifting with Team Beaufort Olympic Weightlifting, led by Coach Ray Jones, and became the youngest lifter ever to complete a clean & jerk of twice his body weight (200 LBS). At age 13, USA Weightlifting called him the “strongest 13 year-old in the world.” At age 16, he was completely dominating the 69 KG weight class with five 1st Overall finishes at major youth and junior competitions. In 2017, Cummings defended his Youth World Championship in Thailand, breaking his own Youth World Record clean & jerk with 185KG. At age 17, C.J. set a new senior, junior and youth American record in the 69 kg. category Today, he holds 25 USAW National Records and 7 IWF Gold Medals. He has been profiled by ESPN, Men’s Journal, Muscle and Strength as well as many of the weightlifting and fitness magazines and websites. This July he was featured in National Geographic magazine in an article along with Hussein Bolt, Jesse Owens, Paralympics record holder Jarryd Wallace, Florence Griffith-Joyner and others. Clearly the sky is the limit for this exceptionally talented (and hard working)

young man. Beaufort Lifestyle recently caught up with C.J. to congratulate him on his phenomenal win at the IWF Junior World Championships and see what was new in his life. Congrats on your high school graduation! Where are you attending college? I am currently a freshman at the University of South Carolina Beaufort, Bluffton campus, as a business major. What interests you in the business world? I think a business degree will be a big help to me in my sports career. I also am interested in building houses, real estate and the performing world. A business background will be useful for all of these ideas. How do you like college life? So far so good. I like my classes and the dorm is pretty fun. What type of social media presence do you have? I am on facebook, Instagram and twitter, and I run all my sites myself. I like it because I connect with fans and friends and it’s a good way to get to know people. I put it out there; people pretty much know everything going on with me. How often do you work out? I work out Monday through Friday. I take the weekend off! What is your best weightlifting event? The clean & jerk is my best event. (The clean and jerk is a composite of two weightlifting movements. During the clean, the lifter moves the barbell from the floor to a racked position. During the jerk the lifter raises the barbell to a stationary position above the head, finishing with

straight arms and legs, and the feet in the same plane as the torso and barbell.) What is your favorite event? I would say the snatch is my favorite. (The objective of the snatch is to lift the barbell from the ground to overhead in one continuous motion.) Who are your athletic sponsors? I’ve been fortunate to have Reebok, Rogue, Essentia water, PowerBar and Earth Fed Muscle as sponsors. These are all products I use and I appreciate their sponsorship. When is your next event? I will be going to the American Open Series 3, September 13-16 in Las Vegas. I have been to Nevada but not Las Vegas so that will be fun. You have travelled extensively for your sport. What is your favorite destination so far? I really liked Peru. It’s a beautiful country and the culture is pretty cool. Where would you like to go that you haven’t been to yet? I would like to check out Dubai, it looks like an interesting place. Where do you see yourself in five years? Preparing to be in the 2024 Olympicsthis will be after I win at the 2020 Olympics! But I really don’t project too far into the future; I take it one day at a time. You have a busy life, so where do you go to unwind? I like to go to the movies. Are you dating anyone? Yes, my girlfriend Sidney Bailey. She sings, acts and is a recording artist. Your favorite place in Beaufort? I like going to the Broad River Bridge boardwalk, that’s a good place to relax. C.J, thank you for taking the time to catch us up and good luck in Las Vegas! To follow C.J., check him out on facebook (CJ Cummings), Instagram (cj_ cummings), and twitter. CHRIS FEARN One Man, One Day Golf Marathon

story by Cindy Reid photos by John Wollwerth

www.BeaufortLifestyle.com | September 2018 25

A

s First Assistant Golf Professional at Dataw Island Club, Chris Fearn spends his days in beautiful surroundings doing something he loves. Not playing golf, but helping people of all skill levels enjoy a rewarding (and maddening!) sport. And as befitting our lowcountry ties to the military, Chris’ love of the links has lead directly to his involvement with fundraising for our nation’s military veterans. As he tells it,” I started at the Dataw Island Club in 2013. I was there during their veterans fundraising tournament, and it was a big success. It was very rewarding and so I had the thought we could create more fundraisers.” He continues, “I had heard of an event called a ‘Golf Marathon’ but there weren’t any happening close to our area, so I decided to start a one-man, one day ‘Golf Marathon.’ How it works is that I take pledges for each hole I can play in one day. The first year I started with a goal to raise $5000 and I raised $13,500! Thanks to the community’s generosity, the Golf Marathon just grows bigger every year.” It sure has: 2014 - 1st Year- $13,500 raised 2015 - 2nd Year- $19,500 raised 2016 - 3rd Year -$ 28,500 raised 2017 - 4th Year - $36,000 raised Beneficiaries have been the OnCourseFoundation USA, the Green Beret Fund, and the SMGA Association. This year Chris has partnered with Tee it Up for the Troops, which supports local

veteran’s organizations. The Golf Marathon is not your average round of golf. In 2016, running from shot to shot, Chris was able to complete 191 holes. That is the equivalent to playing 10 ½ rounds of golf, in one day. Last year Chris played over 200 holes. You have to get up pretty early to get 200 holes of golf in one day. He says, “The Golf Marathon

takes place right after the daylight savings change so I have limited daylight. I start just before dawn, and the members bring their golf carts and shine their headlights on the course so I can play early in the morning. I have glow-in-the dark golf balls and play right up until the sun goes down.” Chris says the Golf Marathon is a crazy day that ends with a big splash. He says “Two

hundred members show up to root me on and we have the coolest party when it’s over. The members are very giving. Dataw is a great place to be!” Chris’s volunteer involvement continues throughout the year. He volunteers with wounded veterans through the OnCourseFoundation USA, where he coaches the US team. And for the last three years, Chris has coached the American Simpson Cup team, an annual Ryder Cup-style tournament between teams of 13 injured servicemen and veterans from the USA and their British counterparts. (This year Wounded Warrior Chad Pfeifer is the team Captain) Originally from Fredericktown, Ohio, Chris says, “I actually played every sport in high school and raced motocross. Golf was just for fun. But after high school, I got it into even more.” He studied Business Management Technology at the University of Akron and moved to the lowcountry eight years ago to attend Professional Golfers Career College in Bluffton. In addition to being the First Assistant Golf Professional at Dataw Island Club, Chris is in the Carolina section PGA, in the Hilton Head PGA chapter. Chris has another big event coming up. He and fiancée Chelsea McGowan are getting married on Sept 29. Fittingly they met at Dataw and that’s where they will wed. Chris says they plan on staying in the area because “The lowcountry is a perfect fit for us.” He says his favorite lowcountry fun is “playing golf!” and he and Chelsea love fishing, paddle boarding and kayaking. Favorite place? He say is it really is Dataw Island. Chris says, “I always say if you can’t live there you can work there!”

OLIVIA GEISEL

A New Sand Shark story by Cindy Reid

30 September 2018 | www.BeaufortLifestyle.com

photos by Paul Nurnberg

T

he college experience is many things. It is the classes, of course, and it is the long days on campus and the long nights in the library. And for some students it is the extracurricular activities that make their college years so memorable. For many students’ college athletics are a continuation of the competitions of their childhood and high school years .Within the collegiate athletics world there are a massive amount of teams and competitions. Everything from football to archery. From soccer to golf. Within each sport is a variety of specialized niches. Within the track and field world there are several such specialized events. One is the pole vault. The pole vault- a competitive track and field event, one of the four “jumping events” in which an athlete uses a long fiberglass or carbon fiber pole to jump over a bar. It has been a women’s Olympic medal event since 2000 but the sport goes back as far as the ancient Greeks. To a spectator it can look intimidating but to University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) incoming freshman athlete Olivia Geisel, it is her favorite sporting event. High School Track Olivia attended Mauldin High School in Greenville, South Carolina and graduated in 2018. In high school Olivia was on the track team all four years. In her freshman and sophomore years she competed in the 800 meter and the 1 mile events. But then, as she says, “I saw other girls competing in the pole vault and I thought it looked really cool. I decided to learn how to do it myself. It took a while to learn the technique but once you do, it really is fun.” For her junior and senior years Olivia changed it up and started competing in the 400 meter and pole vault events. Her dedication and hard work paid off when she went to the South Carolina track state qualifiers in her junior and senior years of high school. Her high school career culminated when she matched her Mauldin High School pole vault record of 9 feet 6 inches. USCB Beaufort Olivia first learned about the USCB Beaufort campus at a college fair and she was able to come down and tour the campus last summer. Beaufort’s small town charm and lowcountry beauty won her over right away. The academics were just what she was looking for and, as an added bonus, the new dorms made a great impression. Olivia says, “I really loved the campus and the new apartment style dorms were very nice. I also liked the fact

that the college is so close to the beach.” The brand new Student Honors dorms are on Boundary Street near downtown Beaufort. Built in the apartment style, the units have four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living area, full-size kitchen and a washer and dryer. Wi-Fi and parking are also on site. She was also interested in being a Sand Shark on the Women’s Track and Field team. Now enrolled in her freshman year at USCB Beaufort, Olivia is a student in the Honors Nursing program and living in the new Honors dorm. (The Beaufort College now has Honors Programs in Biology, Nursing and Lowcountry Studies.) She says she chose nursing “because several of my aunts and for a time, my grandmother, were all nurses and their experiences made such a positive impression on me of the nursing profession.” Although USCB Beaufort is part of

the University of South Carolina system which includes the Bluffton and Hilton Head campuses, all of Olivia’s classes this year are on the Beaufort campus. She says her goal is to be a pediatric ICU nurse, although she doesn’t rule out looking into pre-med sometime in the future. USCB Women’s Track and Field “Since the launch of the USCB athletics program in 2007, the Sand Sharks have quickly grown into one of the strongest overall programs in the Sun Conference and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). USCB sponsors nine varsity sports , baseball, softball, women’s soccer, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s cross country, and men’s and women’s track & field and has qualified teams or individuals for postseason competition in all nine. USCB’s men’s and women’s golf programs

are perennial top-25 powers. “(www.uscb. edu/athletics) The women’s track and field team is lead by Head Track & Field Coach / Head Cross Country Coach Bernard Gaither, who was named Sun Conference Coach of the Year for men’s and women’s track & field after coaching the Sand Sharks to both team titles in 2017. Olivia is on the Women’s Track and Field team for the Sand Sharks, and says she is looking forward to being part of the team and learning from the coaching staff. As it is right now, she will be competing in the pole vault event. When asked what she does for fun in the free time between a full course load and being on the track & field team, she answers easily, “I love hiking and camping and being outdoors!” What do people not know about pole vaulting? Olivia says, “I think a lot of people think it looks scary or hard but it really isn’t either, it’s just a lot of fun!” So come out and cheer Beaufort’s Sand Sharks on! BRITTANY GATES

B

Cheerleader & More! story by Cindy Reid

eaufort Lifestyle recently caught up with dynamic high school senior Brittany Gates, varsity cheerleader (and more) at Battery Creek High School. Born and raised in Beaufort, South Carolina to parents Tony and Nicole Gates, she has been representing Battery Creek High School and cheering on the Dolphins for the past two years. Brittany says “I was a cheerleader when I was younger and then I went on to other things for a few years. But two years ago I wanted to be involved with cheerleading again so I tried out at my school, Battery Creek High School, for the varsity team.” She says, “I went out for cheerleading because it is something fun to do and you help represent the school. Plus I love football and basketball!” About the varsity cheerleading team she says, “They are a great group of girls, I love our team! We work hard and we have lots of fun too. We have our bonding moments, one of my favorites is on game days we go to one team member’s house to get dressed, listen to music, and get ready for the game. We really bond when we go to away games, because sometimes it is a long ride and we just hang out and talk on the bus. My teammates are such great girls and so is our coach, Alexis Butterfield.” Varsity cheerleading tryouts are held twice a year and you have to reach a certain score to make the team. Brittany says, “I was a little nervous but I have tried out for many activities for a lot of years so it wasn’t too bad.” Brittany juggles many other demanding activities besides cheerleading. She has been in competitive dance for sixteen years, in the jazz, lyrical and tap dancing categories, as well in acting and modeling competitions. Also a musician, Brittany has been a member of her middle school, and then high school band for six years. She plays bass drum and percussion and said she took up drums because “My band teacher in middle school said give them a try, and when I did I realized I really liked playing drums.” A senior this year, she says she is “trying to get in at Clemson, my dream school, or Auburn. I like Auburn because it has cheer and dance opportunities. I have toured Clemson, which is a beautiful campus, and

photos by John Wollwerth

will tour Auburn soon. I would love to be a cheerleader and involved with dance in college. I am looking forward to college, but it will be so sad to be leaving the team at the end of the year.” What do people not know about cheerleading? She says, “That we actually work hard!

People think it looks so easy. But we are very athletic. We are conditioned, by running and by working out. It’s also mental work, because we have to memorize every cheer. I think there is over 50 on our cheer list. It’s a lot to memorize but you have to know each and every one because when a cheer is called you have to be ready

to go and know what you are doing!” Being on the cheerleading team also is a big commitment of time. Brittany says, “During football season we practice Monday through Thursday and have a game on Friday.” The cheer team participates in the full schedule, she says, “We go to every away game. During basketball season, the games are during the week, but we still either practice or

have a game day five days a week.” When asked what she does with her ‘free time’, i.e. time not spent at cheerleading practice, working out, going to games, being in band, or working on a dance routine, Brittany says she is very involved with Young Life, a youth Christian organization and is currently the Battery Creek High School YL leader. Anything else?

Brittany laughs and says, “I go to work!” She has just started a job at Buffalo Wild Wings and says, “I love it!” And her favorite place in Beaufort? Easy answer she says, “The Sands in Port Royal. So quiet and peaceful most of the time, I love it there.” For further information and game schedule: https://bchs.beaufortschools. net/

Women United Packs More Than 1,000 Backpacks Full of School Supplies For Local Children In Need

I

magine walking into your new classroom on the first day of school without a backpack or school supplies. Unfortunately, that’s a reality many children here in the Lowcountry would face if it weren’t for Operation Backpack. Operation Backpack is an initiative of United Way of the Lowcountry Women United, providing children in need throughout Beaufort and Jasper Counties with necessary school supplies to begin school. Women United works with school social workers to identify students needing supplies who are not being served by another agency to help fill in the gaps. This past month, Women United volunteers and members of the community packed more than 1,000 backpacks full of school supplies including everything from pencils and erasers to glue sticks and notebooks. Each child in the program also received two school uniform shirts. Many local businesses, churches,

neighborhood groups, residents and community organizations donated supplies and funds to help expand this annual initiative, growing it from 600 backpacks last school year to more than a thousand this year. Women United members say they are grateful for the generosity of all of those who donated to the cause and rolled up their sleeves to pack the backpacks and deliver them to the schools.
