Behind Every Great Daughter, Is A Truly Amazing Dad

WILEY AND DETRA THOMAS story by Katrice Williams

photos by Shelia Scott

I

t is only through “blood, sweat and tears” that a successful business is born. No one knows that better than Wiley Thomas. Wiley is a Springfield native and is married to Claudette Thomas. He is the founder of Wiley’s Home Center, a notable staple in the Rincon community for nearly 32 years. Wiley, a navy veteran, had worked in the home furnishings industry for almost 20 years before starting his own business; therefore, it was a quite “natural” thing to do. Wiley feels that one of his most meaningful accomplishments was when his daughter Detra was born to he and his late wife Rosalyn, his wife of 54 years, who played an instrumental role in every stage of the business’ development and success prior to her death in 2015. Detra and Wiley have always shared a phenomenal bond, one encompassing extraordinary love, respect and mutual support. Actually, the apple certainly did not fall far from the tree in this case, as Wiley has always been Detra’s mentor; she has proudly followed his lead and example for most of her life. Her father’s tremendous work ethic, tireless commitment, sincerity, kindness and overall principles have always intrigued her. Though Detra had earned a teaching degree upon graduating from college, she was drawn into the business with her dad and has been there since day one. She has felt privileged to have the opportunity to work alongside the man she has looked up to her entire life. The two became co-owners in 2004. Detra acquired her dad’s role as president of the business at that time. Wiley could not have been more thrilled, and he still appreciates all the value that Detra adds to the business. He is elated that he has been able to work with his daughter all these years. “I love it. I know she can run the business and do anything that needs to be done. She’s very good at what she does. I don’t have to worry about trusting her; I trust her to do anything that needs to be done,” Wiley stated. He is confident that the business has a “bright future” under Detra’s leadership. Detra was experienced in successfully handling every aspect of the business already. After specializing in sales, purchasing, inventory and other daily tasks for many years, she was already thoroughly knowledgeable about running the business even before she officially took over as president; it was very easy for her to assume the title. “It was an easy transition because I had been doing the same thing for a long time,”

she said. Detra appreciates the incredible role that her dad has always played in her life as a father, a friend and even a business leader. She has felt very blessed to have him as a role model. Detra accredits his character, attributes and remarkable example to the person she is today. In a sincere and tearful moment, she asserted, “I have some big shoes to fill. He’s gentle. He’s generous. He’s kind. He has run this business for 31 years without raising his voice at anybody; you can’t say that about many bosses. Actually he’s not a boss, he’s a leader. He has never said a cross word to me. He’s the best example of a father and a leader that I could have ever asked for.” Detra knows all the work her dad put into the business over the years…all the

meaningful sacrifices. After all, her dad built the business “from the mud up,” diligently bringing his vision into fruition through every challenge…through every complication. In her eyes, his efforts were unmatchable. She has always seen her dad lead his entire team with both gentleness and strength. “That’s why I’m driven to do what I can because of what he has done through blood, sweat and tears. He has worked hard, and I don’t want to lose that for him—that’s the driving force. It makes you proud to see where we were and where we are. I want to see it continue to thrive. This is my baby; I love it too,” Detra stated. Detra feels that the biggest advantage of having the family business is just “being able to work together” with her dad and see him each day. She is thankful that she

www.EffinghamMagazine.com | December/January 18-19 09

has been able to take the load off of him, allowing him to often focus his attention where it is deserved—on customers. Detra is happy to see her dad reap the rewards of years and years of hard work and dedication. “Now he can just come and go as he pleases,” she joked. Wiley believes in building quality relationships with customers about just as much as he believes in selling quality furniture and appliances. Detra admits that he “enjoys the customers.” “I made a lot of good friendships in here,” Wiley said. The two agree that their faith in Jesus Christ has everything to do with where they are today. They know that they would not have made it personally or professionally without His guidance… without His grace. Wiley himself feels that The Lord has been “amazing.” Both know that He has tremendously blessed their lives and their business throughout the years. “We put our faith a lot into this business,” Detra stated. Wiley agrees and also feels that there is no other way that their business can truly flourish. “The Lord takes care of us; there are stories that I can tell,” Wiley added. This truth is exemplified by the way that Detra and Wiley conduct business and also treat others, including their employees. Actually, they are not merely employees to them; they are so much more. “There is no way we could’ve possibly done it without all the great employees that we’ve had; they’re family too,” Detra remarked. The father-daughter duo knows that

having amicable and sound relationships with the entire team has established a solid business foundation over the years, one that has allowed the business to prosper and grow. “We interact with our employees every day. Good employees are the answer to any good business,” Wiley said. The team has a great amount of appreciation and admiration for both Detra and Wiley. They do not view them as bosses, but as family, and can attest to the noteworthy character traits that each of

10 December/January 18-19 | www.EffinghamMagazine.com

them has exemplified. They are grateful for the atmosphere that has been established over the years—one that is value-driven, encompassing kindness, consideration and respect. Peggy Kessler has been a part of the team for 29 years. Though she is skilled in various aspects of the business, her primary role is accounting. She has seen, first-hand, the way in which the co-owners run the business and feels that it is nothing short of impressive. “They are Christian people. You can’t

work for anybody better than somebody who believes in God—that sets the base for everything. They get along very well. It’s good to be in a family business because they take care of whatever is needed on a personal level; you’re not just a number. They’ve been good to me; I’ve tried to be good back,” Peggy said. She even remembered the concern and compassion that Wiley showed her when both her mom and dad were ill some time ago. He allowed her to have a very flexible schedule that enabled her to assist her parents when needed. She recalled, “My mama and daddy were both sick. Mr. Wiley said, ‘take care of your family first.’” Peggy appreciates that to this day. Debbie Wilson, a salesperson who joined the team about 1 ½ years ago, agrees that Detra and Wiley treat the team like family. “I love to work here. They’re great and easy to talk to. They make time for their employees. They’re trustworthy and very honest. They’re Christians; that makes a difference to me…a big difference. They realize that we all have families; I really appreciate that,” she said. Brian Short, one of the store’s primary vendors, has been working with Detra and Wiley since the business first started. “They’re my friends. We’ve been doing business for a long time. This is the relationship that you hope to get: a connection between the person and the soul of the business. Both dad and daughter are committed to the business,”

Brian stated. Wiley and Detra are grateful for all the support of their family, friends and community over the years. Moreover, Wiley is genuinely thankful to have his wife Claudette stand by his side. It is obvious that Detra Thomas and Wiley Thomas share more than just a

familial bond and last name. They share the core values, character and work ethic that has molded them into the people they are today. The future looks bright for Wiley’s Home Center under the leadership of Detra Thomas, understanding that “behind every great daughter is a truly amazing dad.”

A "Secret In The Woods" NEW EBENEZER RETREAT CENTER Clara Barnes, Director photos and story by Miranda Osborn

www.EffinghamMagazine.com | December/January 18-19 15

I

n a city just over 8.6 square miles lies many hidden pockets. Beautiful scenery and incredible locations that no one seems to know exist. One such locale is the road that ends at New Ebenezer Retreat and Conference Center. If you follow Ebenezer Road till the end, one might first see an amazing old church on the right. The historic Jerusalem Lutheran Church, dating back to 1769, beckons as the oldest Lutheran church in America with a continuously active congregation (and one of the few Georgia buildings to survive the Revolutionary War). If one looks to the left, however, there is a set of beautiful buildings and grounds lined with old pines that seem to reach to the sun. Paths meander here and there, and maps beckon on the sides of welcoming gates; pavillion one way, cottages, a retreat center and offices the other. It is a land that time seems to have forgotten. An immaculate slice of heaven in the most unassuming location. New Ebenezer Retreat Center has been occupying its 125 acres of land since 1977 in the somewhat ghost town in Effingham County, the official “first capital” of Georgia. The township of New Ebenezer (founded in 1734) has a rich heritage and was settled by Lutheran Salzburgers seeking a place of religious freedom and a chance for a new beginning. These values have carried on to the Retreat. For over 40 years, this peaceful “secret in the woods” has been a haven for individuals, families, and any who walk its paths to soothe their souls amidst natural surroundings. It is a place New Ebenezer Retreat touts as “embracing all that is good in life.” Amenities abound. An in-ground

swimming pool (open on a seasonal basis), tennis court, basketball court, grill area, fire pit, and the banks of the Savannah River afford the Retreat guests different venues for activities and areas to be together during the day or to share times of reflection as the sun rises and sets. In spring and summer, the property is lush with blooming flowers and manicured landscaping. In autumn and winter, nature’s beauty delights amidst vibrant foliage and the refreshing breezes that whisper through the pines. Not only is it a retreat for those looking to get away, but many school groups from Georgia, Florida, Alabama, and North and South Carolina visit to learn lifelong skills as part of the famed Ebenezer ALIVE! education program. Developed as an extension of the classroom, the “Ebenezer ALIVE program” is one of the Retreat’s most important programs; a “hands-on”

16 December/January 18-19 | www.EffinghamMagazine.com

enriching educational program for fourth to eighth graders that makes an impact not only on the lives of the students, but on the teachers and leaders as well. Newly-appointed full time Director Clara Barnes is as excited as the New Ebenezer Retreat Center staff about new program opportunities for the school groups. “The Ebenezer ALIVE staff continually strive to not only maintain our excellent program at high standards, but to improve and move forward. New Ebenezer Retreat Center is such a wonderful place for the community of Effingham County to benefit from,” she adds. “As the new director, it seems to me that so many people just don’t know what we do here, and have no idea what a wonderful educational program we have for children.” But that’s not all that happens on the wooded grounds. Weddings, retreats,

church outings, family reunions, corporate meetings… anything that one can imagine event-wise can become reality, with all the details being taken care of meticulously by Barnes along with fellow staff members. Seven full time and 23-part time employees, to be exact. The Retreat also has a volunteer board of directors that looks out for the interests of the non-profit. “Volunteers are welcome any time,” Barnes explains, noting that Servant Work Camps are starting up soon and would be a great opportunity for anyone wanting to help out. “There is plenty of room to expand, but as always the availability of funds is what controls future expansions,” Barnes continues. “I would love to rebuild the Native American council house, upgrade outdoor classrooms and add a building for wedding receptions near the pavilion. Dreaming of expansion is great, but the reality is we are a 41-year-old facility that is in desperate need of some major infrastructure upgrades. The upgrades must be done, and if they are not it could mean that there might not be a future for the Center. I am desperately seeking ways to find the funds for what has to be done,” she states. An area that Barnes also wants to focus on is to have more weddings at the recently renovated pavilion. “It is so beautiful and I really want to do some strategic marketing to get this part of our venue going strong,” she explains. Next year the Retreat will also be offering band camps, day camps and team building packages. Barnes has been with the Retreat just five short months, but is poised to do everything she can to bring as much life to the hidden locale as possible. She brings

a wealth of knowledge and skill to the Retreat Center. Along with growing the business, she also has a burning desire to take the Retreat to the next level of technology. “We are behind in this area and I hope little by little bit to move us forward in this department. The goal for me is to take the vision of the Retreat Center and just keep making it better and better.” “Every day I talk to people that don’t know that the Retreat even exists!” Barnes says with a shake of her head of the land she now oversees. Barnes hopes to change that, making the New Ebenezer Retreat an amazing getaway for people of all walks of life to relax, reflect and renew. Barnes grew up in Effingham County and spent her entire life here, having

strong ties to the community. She calls herself a “home grown Guyton girl to the core,” her family living on a farm several miles north of Guyton on Hwy 17 better known to the locals as “Monkey Hill.” “The farm inherited this nickname many years ago from the train conductors that drove past the house daily,” according to Barnes as a broad smile crosses her face. “It was said that so many children used to hang out the windows waving that they looked like a bunch of monkeys.” For a youngster, life on Monkey Hill meant working hard, playing hard and enjoying fresh air and sunshine to the fullest. To this day she lives just a few miles from where she grew up at Dove Field Farm, where she has owned and operated a horse boarding facility since 2011. As a child, Barnes’ grandparents on both sides played a huge role in her life. “They were always there no matter what life was throwing out,” she smiles. Her “PaPa” (Dr. Charles T. Brown, M.D.) was one of the founding doctors for Effingham County and helped start the current hospital. “MaMa” Brown taught a young Barnes how to find treasures like Indian arrowheads, grow flowers and how to fish. Grandmother Willie Overstreet taught Barnes how to cook, clean, sew and laugh. “They all taught me to love God and to have good character,” she smiles. “I have a saying that I always tell others… I always want to be a good parent but I hope to be a greater grandparent. Passing along that heritage is so important to me.” When Barnes was a little girl, she dreamed of being a pastry chef. Every day she could get outside to play she would make mud cakes and pies with all kinds of

nature’s decorations on them. “I still tell my kids all the time that I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up. They usually laugh and say ‘Mom…. it is time to figure it out!’” In 1984, Barnes graduated from Effingham County High school with honors, before going on to complete two years at Georgia Southern University studying computer programing. For the next 19 years, she raised her children whilst managing and running financials for several businesses, but would start her full time professional career soon after, doing what she knew how to do best; cook, clean and serve children. In 2005, she started at Guyton Elementary as a cashier, then moved to an assistant manager position. From there, Barnes opened the Effingham Middle School as a manager, before transitioning to the Board Office as a School Nutrition Specialist Trainer. “During my 13 years of service for the BOE, so many valuable skills were learned,” Barnes explains, listing a litany: cooking, cleaning, leadership, computers, human resource, teaching, handling conflict, communication, nutritionals, maintenance, equipment, hiring personnel, and relationships with coworkers. “I will forever be indebted to all the ‘lunchroom heroes’ that I went to battle with every day for those 13 years to get those precious children fed and full so they could learn something new every day!” It was a natural transition for Barnes to move to the director role at New Ebenezer Retreat Center which she learned about in early May whilst speaking with a friend who made her aware that Mrs. Connie Bazemore would be retiring from the

position. “Working at the Retreat Center is very similar to my BOE position,” Barnes explains of the many different hats she wears and the utilization of all the learned skills. The number one difference is that the Center is a non-profit organization. “Fundraising and asking for money is new to me on this large of a scale.” Most of the funding at this point occurs through the services that the Retreat provides. More fundraising is always needed, and this is an area Barnes is laserfocused on. One of the most important things to Barnes about New Ebenezer Retreat is not to lose the integrity and mission that the center was built around. “Upholding those values is part of who we are along with what we do through our service,” she explains. The Center is an ecumenical retreat location that’s become a welcoming haven for those seeking personal growth, quiet time, meditation and relaxation. Part

of the Retreat’s mission is to strengthen family, encourage wholesome recreation in an unspoiled environment, provide a positive setting for learning and growth, and to empower individuals, couples, families and groups to experience renewal with each other. Over 9,600 guests did just that at the Retreat in 2018; 3,391 of them students and teachers attending the Ebenezer ALIVE! Program, with 4,000 s'mores toasted perfectly by the fire throughout the year. And Barnes is just getting started. “Our peaceful haven is a place to rest and relax, and will soothe your spirit. It is my prayer to continue New Ebenezer into the future trying new things and making improvements every day so it can continue serving the community for many years to come.” For more information, visit Newebenezer.org or facebook.com/ newebenezerretreat

Ef fingham Residents Reaching Out To Hurricane Victims

"Loving Thy Neighbor"

Ricky and Kim Stalnaker

T

story by Cindy Burbage

his past September, the first major hurricane of the Atlantic for 2018 made landfall along the North Carolina coast. Hurricane Florence dumped vast amounts of rain water causing major flooding and catastrophic damage to areas in her path. Neighboring states, along with the rest of the country, watched in terror and disbelief as the first glimpses of the photos and videos of devastation began circulating the news and internet. However, the images would prove to become the tool that stirred the compassion of neighboring viewers and show a divine intervention. After seeing the news coverage of the aftermath of Hurricane Florence, members of the Effingham community, which included the Stalnaker family, decided to take action and offer help. Springfield resident, Kim Stalnaker, described how their efforts initiated, “Ricky, my husband, Zach, my youngest son, and my oldest son, Rick all work at the Sugar Refinery together. The conversation about going to North Carolina started there. All of a sudden, people started saying ‘I’ll go, and I’ll go.’ When I found out they were going, I said I am going too, we would make it a family thing.” “We ended up with approximately twenty people with trucks, trailers and boats. We had a horse trailer full of

supplies. Our contact was in New Bern, NC, where some of the worst flooding had taken place. It was a long drive because some of the roads were washed out and we had to take several detours,” Kim explained. The battered roads were part of a bigger plan designed by God. Upon facing the washed-out roadway, the group met a couple from a nearby area, Senona and Michael Krieser; they had something to do with a fire department in a small town. “At that point, we were allowed to go thru the rushing water. It was so bad we all rolled our windows down and took our seat belts off just in case we were swept over the road,” Kim depicted. The new-found friends assisted the battery of helpers and their convoy through road blocks, so they could continue on the mission. The group had planned to meet the police at a drop off point in New Bern with the collected supplies and with the idea of volunteering their help with the locals in need. “We met with a police office and were basically told they appreciate our supplies, we could take them to their warehouse and leave them; but they did not need us. And we should just go back home. But we knew people would be in need. Tre Evans called the people [Kriesers] we had met in the parking lot and they said come to our farm and camp for the night,” Kim explained.

26 December/January 18-19 | www.EffinghamMagazine.com

“We were not really prepared to camp; everyone had planned to just sleep in their vehicles. At this point, it was dark, and the rivers were cresting. It was just dangerous,” she remembered. “Around 9 pm, a vehicle pulled into where we were staying begging for help. They knew of a family that was in desperate need-they were flooded! All the guys left and were gone for hours. During the rescues, a dead cow floated by,” Kim recalled. “It was after 2am before we got back, Ricky added. They ended up rescuing about fifteen people and two dogs and a cat. “Carl the cat,” Zach jokingly shared. “We feel like God just orchestrated the whole thing. He put us in that place and put Senona and Michael Krieser in our path for a reason. If we had not met with them, there would not have been anyone to help these folks,” Kim thankfully said. “We were in such a tiny little area. It was near Dover and Trenton, they didn’t have anyone to help. It was a blessing when we were turned away from New Bern. Although we were frustrated at first, looking back we could see God put us in their path. Our guys were right where they needed to be to do these rescues. That was pretty incredible that night,” she meekly shared. Kim continued, “The people whose

farm we were staying at had no power or water; the guys brought back all fifteen people they had rescued and the Kriesers welcomed all fifteen. It was people stacked on top of people. These people were just devastated. The reality was setting in that they had lost everything. No one got sleep that night. Everyone was trying to digest what happened that night and what everyone had seen. With the rising water levels, it was to the point that the group would have to leave, or we would be marooned there. “We were near the Cape Fear and Neuse River, and the water was starting to rise. If we had not left early that morning, we would have been stuck. We came on home; it took hours because of road closures,” they described. Once home, the group would quickly realize help was still needed. “Senona reached out and said they could really use some resources. When you are in a small community like that, that isn’t top priority. We know that the people that we helped did not have flood insurance; they were not in a flood zone. That was another concern. Ricky decided we needed to do something, so he called and said we need to try to organize something. That was on a Wednesday. On Saturday we had a 48 ft enclosed trailer slap full of supplies. We took two more boats full of bottled water. The trailer had canned goods, baby items, cleaning supplies and personal hygiene items. A company donated 800 bags of potato chips and cookies,” Kim appreciatively declared. “It was people we knew, it was people we didn’t know. The word got out! One thing that Senona said was can you bring some bibles because their faith is all they

have left. We put that out there, we had over 1000 bibles collected-new, used, people donated their family bibles,” Kim emotionally shared. “We also collected livestock supplies and feed; this was a farming community. One man had a 150 head of cattle and could only find 30 of his cows,” Zach stated. “It was shocking when we went back a week later to deliver the supplies. The Kriesers were very instrumental in getting us back in touch with ones we had rescued. Because they knew the lay of the land, they were helpful. They were grateful! The devastation when you go back during the day was overwhelming,” Kim added. Kim remembered, “There was an elderly couple who had been in their home for over 53 years, their house was a total loss. It’s just hard to think about. It was up on a hill; how could it flood? Her son had gone

to the creek banks at 7pm and said the water is not out of the banks; he thought they would be fine. At 9pm, water was in the house already to 18 inches. That tells you how quickly the water was moving. It looked like a single-story farmhouse that first night, after viewing during the day, reality was it was a two-story home. After a week there was so much still under water. No flood insurance because they were not in a flood zone. I do keep in touch with them. Their church decided to have Sunday service in their yard and immediately after church everyone would start helping them tear out the damage from their home. Some homes that we visited had water to the ceiling. One young couple had just bought their little home and flood insurance wasn’t required. They had worked so hard to save their money to buy their little home. But they just stayed positive and never lost their faith.

They will rebuild slowly. I saw some of their Thanksgiving photos and they are so grateful for what they do have-their lives.” The Stalnakers are just a small fraction of this very large picture. The battery of help included: Bill Butler, Tre' Evans, Sid & Shelly Bragg, Dannie Barras, Joseph & Brittany Barras, Jordan Dellinger, Alan & Christa Gnann, Mike Kolcum, Michael Williams, Walt Boykin, Brian Roddenberry, Lucas Roddenberry, and Rusty Roddenberry. Brittany Barras did an amazing job coordinating donation pick-ups. With and an abundant of gratefulness, Kim continued, “The way that our community came together was unbelievable. People donated money for fuel. Saying we can’t go with you, but we want to help you get there. People donated trucks. So generous! The people there were just so appreciative. We were overwhelmed with gratefulness from our community.” Rick continued with his overwhelming gratitude, “Jasper Feed & Seed donated. Webb’s in Springfield. Attorneys donated, churches collected, hair dressers. We got a call on the way that an old squirrel hunter out of SC wanted to give. We had to pull off an exit on the way at 5am for him. He gave us $150 and said he wanted to pay for someone’s fuel to get there. Scott Thompson from Guyton, organized supplies and we picked up from the United Way” After having some time to reflect on

their journey. The Stalnakers shared, “It was a life changing thing! We believe what the bible says, “Love your neighbor as yourself” The whole time we were immersed in that, no one asked if you were a democrat or a republican or what your religion was. No one cared, we were just brothers and sisters. We were just people helping people; doing what we were supposed to do. No one cared what you looked like or how much money you had. No one could deny who orchestrated the entire thing. Even people that might not be believers, left believing.” This group of kind people, each with

a servant’s heart, can only be described as divine. “Having a servant’s heart is being helpful to a person no matter their circumstances and situation; having compassion to want to help them from the start.” Unknown Hebrews 6:10 (CSB)For God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you demonstrated for his name by serving the saints- and by continuing to serve them. And for a brief moment, the chaos of the world stood still and for that one moment everyone was loving thy neighbor.

veryone knows that the traditional Christmas colors are green, white and red. For merchants, however, black is perhaps the most important color of the season. It means enough silver and gold could come their way to get their bottom line out of the red. The Christmas shopping season is what puts retailers in the black. Unless you are in retail, you’re probably not aware of how expensive it is to succeed in that field and how slim margins can be. Most retailers operate at a loss throughout the year. They stay afloat because of the yearend frenzy of consumer spending. It is generally believed that Black Friday is the busiest shopping day of the year, but that’s not necessarily the case. Typically, busiest shopping day honors goes to the Saturday before Christmas or, if Christmas falls on a weekend, the Thursday and Friday before. Very few people get all of their Christmas shopping done in any single day during the season. It is the entire month (give or take) leading up to Christmas that makes the merchants merry. The whole thing conjures up images of ravenous shoppers barreling mindlessly through stores, trampling everyone in their way, grabbing at everything in sight, and contending with one another over the last great bargain. But that’s not the true holiday spirit. That spirit can be found when shoppers are truly thoughtful about what they buy and where they buy it. That’s why the small business organizations in Effingham County encourage residents to spend their money in local businesses. Dollars spent in our locally owned businesses have a tremendous impact on our community. When shopping locally, the dollars stay in our community, creating jobs, funding more city services, and providing more money for community development.

34 December/January 18-19 | www.EffinghamMagazine.com

Small businesses form the backbone of our local economy, generating jobs and improving the quality of life for citizens. For every dollar you spend locally, you are doing your part to help stimulate and preserve your local economy. And, don't forget about the wonderful services provided by some of our local small businesses...services such as hair salons, nail salons, and spas are vital to the local business mix, and provide thoughtful gift options. Our local merchants offer thousands of products and services from local artists, artisans, farmers, and other producers of celebrated goods. Buying local means more than just supporting merchants–it supports local producers as well. It’s also important to remember that if you have grown accustomed to shopping online, you can shop online locally, too. Virtually all local merchants have websites. If a merchant doesn’t have purchasing capabilities on its site, simply call them. You can get the best of both worlds: on line convenience and personal service from people you know. You can even save on shipping by picking up your purchases at your convenience. Shopping local has so many advantages,...and with all our local businesses have to offer...why go anywhere else? Shop Local, Shop Effingham...that's what it's all about!

7 Christmas Bible Verses To Reflect On

1 2

John 3:16

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” This verse relays the beautiful and holy gift our Father gave us; this is the greatest gift to humankind. May we reflect on His goodness and just how mighty His love is for us to have given up His only Son for us.

Isaiah 9:6

“For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.” Jesus Christ is our Prince of Peace, our mighty Healer, our Savior. This verse speaks volumes about the Christ we have the honor and blessing of serving, knowing and loving. There is truly no one like Him.

3

Matthew 1:21

“She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” May this verse stir up an excitement for our King, may it make us reflect on His holy purpose, His sacrifice and His whole life. May we reflect on His purpose for having come to save all of humanity from their old ways and their sin, so that they may reborn into a new life of faith and communion with Jesus. That is a miracle.

4

John 1:14

“And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.” May we ever believe and have hope in God’s Word, because our God is the Word, and He is ever with us, sustaining us, guiding us into still waters and edifying and enriching our souls with who He is.

5

James 1:17

“Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.” All good and perfect gifts are directly from our God; may we simply give thanks to Him for all things in our lives, not only during this season, but every day. May we worship Him with thanksgiving always, and praise Him for all of His wonderful deeds. He will never stop working in our lives.

6

John 14:27

“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.” This is a powerful verse once we accept its truth and reality; there is a peace that we can have that transcends all understanding, a peace that can only derive from the Father, a holy peace. May we not lose heart as He tells us to, and may be keep strong, fight the good fight and wrap ourselves daily in His light and the peace which he gives us freely.

7

2 Corinthians 9:15

“Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.” It is indeed unspeakable. We will lose our words for how great our God is, our greatest gift in living. May we always worship Him with our lips, seek Him with our hearts and honor Him with our actions. Make this Christmas unforgettable. Hold your family close. Give thanks. Be merry.

Merry Christmas

What Does Christmas Mean To You? "Christmas to us is a time of giving, sharing, family and celebration!"

– Travis and Lisa Stephens, Total Services

“To me, Christmas represents eternal truths about God. First, there is the truth that God has come into our world to redeem us through His Son. Yet, also, we see another truth in that God has a plan, for you, me and the entire world, and He will often act through the most surprising ways to see that plan accomplished. In Christmas, we see that God often appears when you least expect Him. Finally, Christmas reminds me that God will go to any length to draw us to Him, and that His love for us is the most powerful force in the universe.” -Bob LeFavi, Bethel Luthern Church

"Christmas is the day we celebrate the birth of our Savior. It’s a reminder that there's a greater purpose for our lives. It’s a time to be thankful for all you have and cherish the ones you love."

- Courtney Kelley, The Cottage of Art and Framing

"Maybe Christmas," he thought, "doesn't come from a store. Maybe Christmas... perhaps...means a little bit more!" -Kimberly Stalnaker, Homes Around Savannah

"To me, Christmas is a joyous time. A time to spend with loved ones, a time to give from the heart, and a time for hope and to never forget to say Happy Birthday Jesus."

-DiAnna Jenkins,Homes Around Savannah

What Christmas means to me: "Family, Friends, Giving and LOVE!" -Toni Hardigree, Platinum Properties

JESUS. Sharing the love of Jesus with family, friends, and--even more importantly--those we don't know. The best part of Christmas for me has been our family choosing to pool all the money we would spend on each other and helping a family in need. We started this about 16 years ago, and it has brought so much JOY to our lives. MERRY CHRISTMAS! - Heather Riggs, Riggs Funeral Home

The True Meaning of Christmas

n today's day and time, It's easy to lose sight, Of the true meaning of Christmas And one special night. When we go shopping, We say, "How much will it cost?" Then the true meaning of Christmas, Somehow becomes lost. Amidst the tinsel, glitter And ribbons of gold, We forget about the child, Born on a night so cold.

The children look for Santa In his big, red sleigh Never thinking of the child Whose bed was made of hay. In reality, When we look into the night sky, We don't see a sleigh But a star, burning bright and high. A faithful reminder, Of that night so long ago, And of the child we call Jesus, Whose love the world would know.

Christmas is forever, not for just one

day, for loving, sharing, giving, are not to put away like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf. The good you do for others is good you do yourself... Merry Christmas Best Wishes
