ach year when we do our annual Music and Arts issue, I am amazed at the local talent we find in our city. From musicians to artists, and this year a costume maker...we have some folks with flair. I have been told many times by our readers that you never know who your neighbor is until you read our magazine. Well, I am sure you know your neighbor, but it is pretty neat to find out someone living in your neighborhood has a gift, or a talent, that you knew nothing about. Look at our cover...Gayle Kicklighter...she has Julie Hales, PUBLISHER taken a talent and turned it into a passion. She takes her role very seriously in the organization that she has become a leader in. Her talent of costume making and her passion for Star Wars has become a way for her to volunteer her time and give back to many in our community. Now, that is talent! Look at the bright and fun paintings by our local artist, Jenna Scott. What fun! She certainly has a unique way of expressing life....and that life is something she lives to the fullest capacity. Her love of life is pretty clear cut and explodes on her canvas. For all you folks who still like to go out and enjoy some live music, check out the schedule for Guns 4 Hire. This popular local band plays all over Pooler in places like Molly McPherson’s and Wild Wings. It is sure to be a fun night.

T
here’s a good chance you’ve met Gayle Kicklighter before and didn’t even know it. When she makes an appearance, she’s usually donning a giant hairy outfit and goes by the name of Chewbacca. She’s a Star Wars fanatic and her love of everything Star Wars is making a big impact in the local community. Gayle, a Pooler resident, is part of the 501st Legion, a worldwide Star Wars all-volunteer organization that brings together costume enthusiasts to promote interest in Star Wars, use the costumes for Star Wars-related events as well as contribute to local communities through appearances and volunteer work. “It’s a group where I get to enjoy my passion for Star Wars, but I also can give back,” says Gayle. “Whenever you do a troop (also known as a visit) and you’re doing it for kids, just seeing one smile and them losing themselves in fantasy, makes it worth it.” Gayle pours her heart and time into her passion. Despite working full-time at a marketing firm that sells sugar, she spends nearly all of her free time with the 501st Legion. She laughs when she says her husband tells her she spends too much time with the club. “If I wasn’t in the club, my weekends would be free,” admits Gayle. While the 501st Legion is a worldwide organization, nearly every state has its own garrison. Just this year, Gayle was nominated by her peers to be the commanding officer of the state of Georgia. That means she’s responsible for club protocol, the legion charter and maintaining the club’s activity in the state as well as participating in events. Currently, there are five squads in the state: Coastal Empire, Ocmulgee, Outlander, Venator and Terminus. There are more than 200 state-wide members and 24 in the Savannah area. Gayle says when she first started doing this eight years
ago, there were only three members in this area. She says the small group worked hard to build a reputation. “We would visit the Ronald McDonald house, participate in the Red Shoe Run and October Fest. We were doing anything we could do to build awareness of our mission.” Last year, the Coastal Empire squad participated in about 25 local events. Gayle says one of the most rewarding events was Memorial Hospital’s reverse trick or treat event for sick children. “We dressed in full gear and came with giant buckets filled with candy,” says Gayle. “We visited each child and spent time with them. One child got so excited and was asking to take pictures with us. When we were leaving, the nurse said he hadn’t smiled in weeks.”
Along with hospital visits, club members participate in Star Wars movie premieres, library visits, free comic book day, Savannah Comic Con, Jekyll Island Comic Con, conventions and parades. In fact, this year the Coastal Empire squad will make their debut in the Savannah St. Patrick’s Day parade. “We’ve been trying for years to get a spot in the parade and we finally got one,” says Gayle. “There will be lots of Stormtroopers, Mandalorians, Rebels and Darth Vader.” Because the 501st Legion is an all-volunteer organization, Gayle says everything she spends on her passion comes out of her pocket. Members are required to have movie quality costumes and they put thousands of miles on their cars traveling

to events across the state. Gayle’s favorite costume is her Chewbacca, which she made from scratch seven years ago. The hair in the mesh suit is latch hooked in and her mask was made by lifecasting her face. She then took that mold and made a latex rubber mold in which she punched all the hairs in it. Gayle says the material cost about $500, but when you add in the hours it took her to complete, you can’t put a price on it. “We take our costumes very seriously, they all have certain requirements and if something isn’t right, you have to fix it.” If you’ve had the pleasure of seeing one of these costumes, you’ll understand what Gayle means. For example, you don’t have to be a Star Wars buff to recognize one of the club’s Stormtroopers. Their white armor, large helmets and survival equipment are top-notch. Gayle says a lot of work is spent making a Stormtrooper costume. You purchase vacuum-form plastic and cut it to fit you. After gluing and riveting the pieces together, you have to assemble it. Usually, the costume fits only the person it was made for. When you look at the impact Gayle and her peers are making, you gain a perspective on why they do it. The 501st Legion is known as the "Bad Guys Doing Good." In 2016, nearly $900,000 in direct donations were contributed in honor of the Legion.

When club members do a visit, they don’t take any money, instead, they ask that donations be made in honor of a charity. Here locally, money is raised for organizations such as Coastal Pet Rescue. The 501st Legion also raised $150,000 for its Make-A-Wish Endowment. The endowment will allow MakeA-Wish America and Make-A-Wish International to grant Star Wars-related wishes to children diagnosed with life-threatening medical conditions. Not only is the Legion raising much-needed funds, members donate thousands of hours to help their local communities. In 2016, worldwide, more than 182,000 volunteer hours were contributed by 12,000 members. Gayle says the Coastal Empire group tries to make every event they are asked to attend. Whether it be a convention, a visit to a Boy Scout
troop, or an occasional wedding, members are willing to go the extra mile to help the community. “Our Coastal Empire squad tries to keep everything local and give to local groups,” says Gayle. If you’re a Star Wars fanatic or are considering becoming one, you can join the 501st Legion. You have to be 18 years of age or older and you have to have an approved costume. While Gayle doesn’t make as many costumes as she used to, she’s always willing to lend a helping hand. When asked why she does it, Gayle has one reason, “It’s a lot of fun.” Gayle admits that it’s also a lot of hard work, long days, long drives and sometimes the costumes get very hot; however, there’s never a moment when she doesn’t want to do it. usic is the gateway to the soul, speaking to many on a sundry of levels. It tells a story, and with just a few notes of the melody or lyrics, memories of the past can gush to the future. The late George Harrison said, “I think people who truly can live a life in music are telling the world, you can have my love, you can have my smiles. Forget the bad parts, you don’t need them. Just take the music, the goodness, because it’s the very best, and it’s the part I give most willingly.” Live music is not as popular as it once was, but Pooler is home to various venues that keep live music pumping. Rock and roll cover band, Guns 4 Hire, plays in this local music circuit. Band members Kenny Warman, Fred Hodges, John Neal, and Mark Carter hold a lifetime of musical experience plus a side of longtime friendships among the group. Kenny Warman began his singing career in the mid 1960’s. “I was a flower child. Anybody that had any talent in Savannah, when the Beatles came out, wanted to be in a band. It was like a revolution.” While belting out his favorite tune in the shower after gym class, Kenny was overheard, and his dream became his reality. “The guy said, ‘I know someone wanting to start a band, and they need a singer, you sing
real good.’ So, I went and auditioned for the band and started singing; that was in 1964 or 1965. Back then we didn’t have the equipment we have these days. So, if you didn’t have a good strong voice, no one heard you. They were looking for a loud singer. Some guys sing loud and some sing good, I sing good and loud,” the vocalist lightheartedly shared. I continued to sing in bands throughout junior high school and high school, until I was drafted in 1971,” Kenny reminisced. “I got drafted and went away in the Army; came home and got married. At that point, my singing career was over. And besides that, disco was the big thing, and Kenny don’t do disco!” In the beginning, Kenny was ultimately just a singer but instrumental melodies were woven around him. “My mother played the piano in church and as I got older, my brothers had guitars and would mess around with them. But when I first started, I was primarily a singer- well unless you consider a tambourine an instrument,” he joked. “But as I stayed in groups for a while, I started messing around with guitar. Guys that were in the bands, like Fred, would show me stuff and I picked it up quickly. I am self-taught and I had a lot of people to help along the way.” Fred Hodges discovered his love of
music with a set of drums. “I always liked drums and started playing the drums. Because we couldn’t find a guitar player, I just learned to play the guitar. I sold the drums and got a guitar. I guess I was about a freshman in high school. My family was always into country music, so there was always music on growing up. I had a cousin from Statesboro that was in a rock band. I saw them do Credence Clearwater Revival’s ‘Proud Mary,’ like when it was on the radio, and I was just awe struck. I had another teenage cousin that was big into the Beatles and had an electric guitar; I thought that was the greatest thing in the world. I think I was enamored with the look of it at first,” the guitarist ardently remembered. Drummer Mark Carter is a product of his environment; his passion for music is hereditary. “My father played guitar. His father played the banjo and it was handed down to him; I now have that banjo. My dad taught me a few basic chords after I had started with the drums. This got me interested in guitar. I don’t call myself a guitarist,” Mark ribbed. “I’m like guitar George, he knows all the chords but doesn’t want to make it cry or sing.” (Referencing classic rock band Dire Straits lyrics) As a teenager, bass player John Neal discovered his musical talents while trying

to impress the ladies. “I got a guitar just to impress girls…but it didn’t work at all,” he snickered. “But then I had some guys in school that played and knew I played guitar a little bit and so I ended up in a high school band.” Times have changed for music lovers over the years. Today, music is an instant commodity. With just one stroke of a button your favorite tunes are revealed. If you are eager to learn the technique of the song via instrument, it is accessible also. When the members of Guns 4 Hire were finding their way in the music world, they had to work for it. Fred explained, “In the past, in Savannah, there were a lot of music dedicated clubs - there was Night Flight Café on River Street and Congress Street Station. I would go and watch local bands and watch the guitarist intently. We were sneaking in a lot of the places underage, so we could see someone play. In those
18 March/April 2018 | www.PoolerMagazine.com
days, there were not videos to watch. Often times you would buy an album and there wasn’t even a picture of the band on it. Then we would have to play it and pick apart what they were doing in the song to learn it, which we mostly figured out wrong. There is so much technology at your disposal to learn. It’s easier to learn now and not too many people are learning to play.” “We count ourselves as ‘old school’ because we rehearse and bring our own sound system. We play the music live, but we do try to use modern technology as much as we can- like the video stuff and YouTube where we can learn the music correctly. Back in my day, we used to buy a 45 and set the needle on the record and play the first verse. Stop and try to learn it, put it on back again and start again”, Kenny shared. “But everything that we play is live music!”
Since the 1980’s, the four musicians have played in different bands together; however, never in this arrangement. “It took this many years and a lot of miles for us to have the current lineup,” Fred added. The members of this band is extremely grateful to still have the opportunity to perform and do what they love. Guns 4 Hire plays at an array of venues throughout Pooler and the surrounding areas, including, but not limited to, Molly Macpherson’s, Wild Wings and Bootleggers. With a song play list of more than 60 tunes of various artists from Black Crowes to the Beatles, with a little bit of country in between, this basic rock and roll band is sure to be a good time. This lighthearted and just simply fun music group is also available for private parties and functions. Follow them on Facebook to keep up with their upcoming performances and events: Facebook.com/Guns4HireBand.
Brewer Land Surveying

f you head west on Highway 80, just before you get to Pooler Parkway, you’ll see Brewer Land Surveying’s new sign. Just last year the company moved into its new Pooler location. For a company that’s steadily growing, the new office space is a welcomed addition. Despite the growth, owner and operator Craig Brewer says Brewer Land Surveying is committed to quality. “We effectively manage our growth so that quality remains exceptional,” Craig says. “We pay close attention to every detail of a project. We double check data and make sure the maps and reports we create are accurate and contain everything our clients need.” Brewer Land Surveying is a full-service, fully licensed and insured surveying firm serving Georgia and South Carolina. Craig has more than 20 years of surveying experience. He started his own company in 2010, at which time he was the only employee. He now has three full-time employees and one part-time employee. Craig is a past Director for the Surveying and Mapping Society of Georgia and has written product reviews for Professional Surveyor magazine. He is involved in the local community and has served twice on the Pooler Planning and Zoning Board. Craig's company aids a variety of clients with their surveying
services. They include homeowners, engineers, architects, municipalities, military contractors, construction companies, mortgage companies, insurance firms, and attorneys to name a few. The types of surveys Brewer Land Surveying can provide include boundary surveys, topographical surveys, foundation surveys, ALTA/ACSM land surveys, subdivision plats, and route surveys. They can also provide GPS control points, aerial photography control targeting, and mapping for GIS infrastructure projects. The surveying firm specializes in flood elevation certificates. “For many people, flood insurance premiums are going through the roof,” says Craig. “We provide them with a FEMA Flood Elevation Certificate, which contains the information insurance agents use to set policy rates.” Craig recommends this be done before you buy a home because it is such a large factor in the cost of a home. He says flood insurance rates could be anywhere from $400 to well over $1000 having a tremendous impact on the actual home payment. Like flood elevation certificates, Craig recommends having surveys completed before you purchase a home, complete a renovation or plan a project. Many times, a survey is required for designs and permits. Craig adds that it’s also best to do it right the first time. “If you’re building a fence it’s best to put it in the right place the first time. If you’re buying a piece of property it’s best to know what you’re buying before you purchase it.” He recalls times when a survey is completed after property has been purchased and the buyer did not get what they thought they were purchasing. Craig is passionate about his work and helping people protect their homes and property. He is personally involved in every part of each project from start to finish. “Customers can trust me to do my best to help them with whatever their surveying needs are. I may not be the “cheap guy” but my fees are reasonable and the service I provide will exceed their expectations every time,” he proudly says.

Jenna Scott
The World is a Canvas story by Katrice Williams
photos by Miranda Osborn
“You can’t do it if you don’t let yourself do it. You have to try; you have to have faith in yourself.” ~Jenna Scott
J
enna Scott has been in the area for most of her life. The Sol C. Johnson graduate and her husband Josh are enjoying all of life’s creativities and wonders as much as possible each day. Jenna has been quite the artist for some time now. She decided that she wanted to paint in 10th grade, after she had initially focused much of her artistic talent on drawing. In fact, Jenna’s creative aptitude began at a very young age. However, she had very little actual painting experience, nor had she ever taken art classes. Nonetheless, she competed in various local art contests as a teenager. She had natural talent, and she really enjoyed the immense freedom of expression that painting allowed, unlike most other creative mediums. “I liked to express myself; I ended up being pretty okay at painting, so I stuck to it,” she said. What’s more, Jenna’s creative taste is all her own--undeniably imaginative and unique in nature. She finds little artistic fulfillment when painting more plain and standard pieces of art…it is certainly not as much fun. Jenna gives a whole new and interesting meaning to the phrase creative conglomerate. She mentions, “Most of the things I paint end up being spliced with other things, so there may be something with lobster hands and a wolf head. That sounds really weird, but it just happens.
I like things that give you more creativity. It’s all kinds of different things that are meshed together; it’s things that you wouldn’t expect to go together, but when they do, it’s beautiful.” Jenna appreciates all types of beauty. She is particularly inspired by the work of a couple of renown artists, including Salvador Dali, who, like Jenna, was also “highly imaginative;” the surrealist artist appreciated the more unusual, eccentric and even somewhat “bizarre” types of art, which often defined much of his work. She, too, has admired the work of M.C. Escher for some time, feeling that his “precision and skill” is often beyond compare. She remembers that one of her most favorite creations was a simple Edgar Allen Poe portrait that she masterfully drew in sidewalk chalk outside of her parent’s house. Still, her all-time favorite was a piece that she painted of Heath Ledger posing as The Joker. Jenna wholeheartedly knows that the opportunities and talents are endless for anyone who makes the decision to believe in themselves, whether about art or nearly any other aspect of life. She encourages other aspiring artists who are diligently striving towards their goals to have courage and self-confidence. “If you believe you can do something, you’ll find out that you can actually do it. If you see something you’d like to try, why not try it; the worse that can happen is if it doesn’t go right…you try again,” she stated.
Jenna has a real passion for art and looks at all of the many aspects of her life as one big canvas of individuality. She jokes that there is even very little white space left on her walls at home, as nearly all of it is taken up with paintings and drawings. She and Josh would have it no other way. Hence, Jenna feels that art can be appreciated but “you can enjoy it” as well. She smiles and says, “Our house is every color in the rainbow, and it makes us happy.” Jenna has been an art instructor at Pooler’s very own Painting with a Twist art studio for over two years now. Jenna appreciates that co-owners Chris and Jessica Hamel gave her the opportunity to share her talents there. She admits that it is one of the best jobs that she has been privileged to have. Interestingly enough, Jenna initially became familiar with the opportunity after attending one of the art classes there. She comments, “It’s one of the most fun experiences I’ve ever had.” Her work was so impressive that an instructor encouraged her to apply. Later, after applying and submitting her complete art portfolio, she was happy to be chosen to join the team. “I’m really glad it happened. The team really works well together,” she stated. Jenna and the team offer adults a reasonable two-hour painting session with an instructor. Normally, they provide an array of games and even some prizes for cus-

tomers. On occasion, children are offered special youth art classes. Jenna feels that everyone has some form of artistic ability if they only try. In fact, she feels that all of the classes are “geared to people who have never picked up a paint brush.” Jenna says, “Anyone can be an artist. It’s fun art, not fine art…that’s what we emphasize here.” Jenna knows that most people panic when instructed to paint a particular picture on a blank canvas, not realizing their abilities. She loves to see a customer’s end product, when they are truly in awe of what they have created. She remarks, “My favorite part is the end when everybody steps back like ‘wow, I really did this.’ I like proving to them that they can accomplish it.” That said, Jenna also spends time as a reservations coordinator at Kelly Tours. Though it is far from acrylic paint and brushes, Jenna enjoys what she does there as well, especially since it allows her the opportunity to help others. It is obvious that Jenna has a great knack for working with people. She insists, “It’s creative in its own right. We get to create awesome memories for people.” Jenna aspires for her talent to play an even bigger role in her life. She even mentions the possibility of one day going back to school to focus on art therapy. She reveals, “I’d like to create more; I’d like to find a way to integrate art as a fulltime thing in some fashion.” It is no surprise that the creative juices flow so strongly within Jenna, as she comes from a long line of talented relatives. In fact, Jenna greatly admires her grandma Shirley, as she has enjoyed creating beautiful art most of her life. Jenna’s mom Kimberly is also very artsy, having created gorgeous stained-glass art for a long time now. She mentions that her little sister Zanna is even an avid drawer. She talks about her dad John, who has “built everything at their house.” She feels that he may not know just how creatively artistic he actually is. “We’re a very creative family. We’re a very unique family…a very strong family, even though we may be a bit unconventional.” Yes, Jenna’s family means the world to her, and she appreciates all of their support. She asserts, “I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support of my family.” Jenna is especially thankful for all of the love and support of her husband. Josh has been an incredible source of consistent encouragement and very supportive of all

of Jenna’s dreams and artistic endeavors. He sincerely shows her that he believes in her. Besides making sure that she stays stocked with art supplies, he even set aside a special room in their home for her to have as a personal studio. “He’s very much my inspiration. I wouldn’t have started art again without him. If he wouldn’t have supported me, I never would have done it. I’m glad he did, because I’m so much happier now,” Jenna said. She smiles and talks about her husband’s artistry, having much more of an “edgy” feel. She adds, “He’s more into the punkrock kind of art—that jagged, pointy, rough art. He’s really creative. I think he’s better at art than he realizes. I think we inspire each other.” She remembers a beautiful date on Skidaway Island. The couple found a private location in a quiet, wooded area and painted together—a memory to last a lifetime. She explains that they shared one canvas; she started painting on one
side, and Josh began painting on the other. They continued painting towards the middle until their artwork met. In her spare moments, Jenna likes sewing and sometimes going to catch a good movie. Most of all, though, she loves her babies. She jokes, “I like my animals more than sewing. They all have really lengthy names that we only use when they’re in trouble.” Jenna and Josh have five cats, a hedgehog, along with a tortoise and a hare---how ironic. Jenna states, “We rescued the hare as a joke, so that the tortoise could have a buddy; she doesn’t like the bunny, but the bunny likes the tortoise. I really like my animals a lot. Our animals are our kids for the foreseeable future.” Some often feel that life is art. Well, Jenna Scott is definitely a testament to how beautiful it can be when the world becomes your very own canvas.

EARLY DETECTION IS KEY
enesis Vascular is a leading provider in the treatment of Peripheral Vascular Disease. Located in Pooler Georgia, Genesis Vascular’s experienced team led by Board Certified Physicians is committed to the detection and treatment of Peripheral Vascular Disease. Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) is commonly known as a collection of diseases of the circulatory system that affects blood vessels. One of the most common types of PVD is Peripheral Arterial Disease. Peripheral Arterial Disease, also referred to as PAD, is a condition when plaque build-up causes a narrowing or blockage of the blood vessels. Just as a heart attack is caused by a blocked artery in the heart, PAD is the same kind of blockage – only it takes place in the arm, leg or other part of the body. Nancy Sutton, Education Specialist for Genesis Vascular says “PAD is very prevalent in this area, effecting almost everyone to some degree.” Risk factors for PAD include diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. A strong family history of heart disease and stroke is also an important risk factor. PAD affects at least 8 to 12 million Americans and the leading cause for amputation. The disease prevalence increases with age and 12% to 20% of Americans age 65 and older have PAD. PAD can occur in any blood vessel throughout the body, though it typically

affects the legs, ankles, and feet. Half of the people living with PAD don’t show any symptoms. Others might have early symptoms, like pain while walking, pain at rest, burning or aching in the feet and toes, or cold feet. Over time, PAD can significantly affect a patient’s quality of life. Those with PAD are also more susceptible to stroke and heart attack. Genesis Vascular Nurse Practitioner and Center Manager, Jana Bevill, states, “Peripheral Vascular Diseases are not as well-known as heart disease and stroke, it is an understudied and under diagnosed disease.” “Early detection is crucial when it comes to PAD,” Jana and her Genesis Vascular team strive to educate the community, physicians and staff on the importance of screening and testing patients to detect PAD before the disease becomes severe enough to lead to complications. A Doppler ultrasound or an Ankle-brachial index (ABI) are common noninvasive tests used to diagnose PAD. An ABI compares the blood pressure in your ankle with the blood pressure in your arm. To get a blood pressure reading, your doctor uses a regular blood pressure cuff and a special ultrasound device to evaluate blood pres-
sure and flow. Treatments for PAD may include lifestyle changes, exercise and medications first. If these treatments do not help, Genesis Vascular’s highly skilled Physicians can perform a minimally invasive procedure to open up the narrowed vessels, thus improving blood flow and preventing the condition from worsening. The procedures are safely performed in Genesis Vascular’s state of the art facility where patients experience minimal down time and superior outcomes while the patients and their family’s needs are catered to. Genesis Vascular also offers treatments for patients with Venous Disease such as Venous Insufficiency and Venous Compression. Genesis Vascular accepts Medicare, Medicaid and most commercial insurances and serves South Carolina and Georgia. Talk to your doctor if you are having symptoms of PAD so the cause of your symptoms can be identified and treatment can be initiated as soon as possible. Should you have questions contact 912-662-0223 and Genesis Vascular team member will be able to assist you. EARLY DETECTION IS THE KEY!

Rick Harris: Volunteer Coach and Visionary
POOLER RECREATION SPOTLIGHT
R
story by Stephanie Cardozo
ick Harris is a volunteer coach at the Pooler Recreation Department and business owner. Rick was born in the Columbus area and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. Rick went to school at Alabama State, playing baseball in first position; pitching. While playing ball, he lived through an experience that would change him forever. In 2004, Rick suffered from a collapsed lung, changing his life and dream of being drafted and playing professional baseball. “That collapsed lung hit me pretty hard and switched up my values in life,” he says. He goes on to calling this experience a “recalibration of dreams.” In saying so, Rick shows great strength in what happened to him and moved forward with it as a learning experience rather than allowing it to break him down. “I really began to value a lot more and felt so much closer to God,” he said. After going through the healing process, both physically and mentally, Rick focused more on his studies and excelled in all sense of the word. “You have to encourage some sort of life outside of baseball,” Rick says about diving into his academics. He studied business administration, but also had tapped back into his love for art. “My father was an artistic painter and taught me the arts at an early age.” Creativity lives inside of Rick. He found another love in the arts and switched his major to graphic design. Saying he is well versed in the art of design would be taking it quite lightly. Rick started a project in creating a brand identity company. He took what he learned in his internship with a design firm helping small businesses bring their vision to life with web design, marketing, logo branding, etc. and turned it into a business. This started his path to entrepreneurship at the age of twenty-four. After Rick and his wife worked successfully in bringing this new dream to life. They started their family. Rick went to SCAD for a time and explains how much of what he learned he took with him. He was able to build another business with his wife focusing on her knowledge and experience in the hospitality industry. “She is my backbone and I have learned so much from her. I admire her for the work she’s done and for not making work feel like a transaction, but an interaction,” he explains about his love and admiration for his wife. Their

company provides sales support and marketing for hotel owners around the United States. Rick graduated from SCAD in 2016 with a Master’s degree in Design Management. Achieving his Master’s Degree was not only a personal success, but for his mother as well. “She has always encouraged me to pursue education to the highest level and never stop learning. She taught me, if you stop learning, you stop growing.” Rick now coaches little league baseball at the Pooler recreation department as well as three 8U travel baseball teams. He works alongside Tommy Gibbs, who he describes as someone who is a true friend. “Working with another coach who has a deep passion and knowledge for baseball paves the way for a successful run for our kids in the community.” Rick speaks of the kids on his team as if they were his own, with a love and admiration for their dedication to the game and how much they have learned. “I have a need for the game and I believe God was telling me to slow down and said hey buddy, wake up! That’s when my lung collapsed,” he says, explaining why he coaches and
why he wasn’t able to take his baseball career where it potentially could have gone. “He woke me up and He did so for something good. I wanted to provide something, a good foundation for these kids, not only for baseball but for life as well. This may sound strange, but baseball reminds me of life.” He goes on. “Not in the sense of games but in the sense of strategy, discipline, dedication, and passion. Elements of the game that also provide for living a good life and moving with integrity.” “The core and foundation of how I teach my own kids is if you can consistently bat three hundred, no matter how many losses, if you try ten times and only win three, you are still doing well. You are still trying. I don’t even look at it as wins, I look at it as successes,” he explains with sincerity. “I know people who I’ve gone to college with that just stopped trying. That is something that I
don’t want these kids to ever lose, and it’s the sense of trying.” Rick teaches his kids and his teams that the importance in life, not only in the game, is to continuously try. “No matter how difficult the challenge, remember how it made you feel in the beginning and go for it,” he says. “Life is a beautiful thing and it will teach us a lot if we just calm down, sit back and really observe,” he explains with a fire in his voice for both the game and life. Rick takes his coaching seriously. He is a true advocate for the future of these kids and the values they can learn from playing the game and using such discipline in their life moving forward. It’s people such as Rick that make a mark, a real impact in children’s lives. The kind of people that a child will forever remember because of the interaction and dedication they show for them.

KRAV MAGA
POOLER KARATE
K
rav Maga is not a traditional martial art. It was developed in an environment where the Israeli military could not devote many hours to hand to hand combat training. Therefore, the Krav Maga system was created to bring students to a high level of skill in a relatively short period of time. In Krav Maga there are no forms (katas), rules or set combinations. Instead, Krav Maga training focuses on teaching simple self-defense techniques which are specifically catered to reality based attack situations. Many techniques originated in Muay Thai, kickboxing, boxing and wrestling, with other techniques call from Ju-Jitsu and Karate. The art of Krav Maga is much more of a survival system dealing with personal safety issues. It is considered to be a modern, highly refined, street fighting system, designed to be used against armed and unarmed attackers. Krav Maga addresses a wide variety of aggressive acts which include punches, kicks, chokes, bearhugs, headlocks, grabs, as well as defenses against multiple attackers and assailants armed with a firearm, edged weapon, or blunt object. In addition to self-defense, Krav Maga teaches hand to hand combat that shows how to neutralize an opponent quickly and effectively. It embodies elements related to the actual performance of the fight including tactics, feints, powerful combinations of different attacks, the psychological dimensions of the fight, and learning how to use the environment to your advantage. Krav Maga includes specialized training methods to not only challenge students physically, but to also instill a special mental discipline meant to strengthen the spirit and to develop the ability to deal with violent confrontations under intense stress. Classes will also incorporate the self-defense techniques that they teach to law enforcement and military personnel. Because of the Krav Maga's combat-orientation, there are no competitions or tournaments. Like other arts, Krav Maga issues colored belts to mark higher levels of expertise.

hen the sign went up for the Omelette Café, the first thought was, wow, another breakfast restaurant. But, once you walk in the door and see the menu, your mindset will quickly change. The Omelette Café in Rincon, Georgia opened its’ doors five years ago and has been booming with business ever since. Omelette Cafe is a part of the Sunnyside Up family of restaurants which have been around this area for over 16 years. The restaurant is one of the 8 locations owned within the surrounding areas. for breakfast and lunch. The Rincon location is the only location open for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. Their extensive lunch and dinner menu gives you many delicious choices…. from burgers to chicken fingers to seafood’s and specialty salads. Some of the local favorites, aside from the breakfast menu with their Signature Omelettes, is the Fried Shrimp, Monster Burger, Catfish, Philly Steak Sandwich and of course their Omelettes. The Omelette Café is family oriented and provides a family environment for their customers. The full service restaurant can seat up to 70-80 people at one time and provides ample booth space as well as tables and a diner countertop. The kitchen is an open kitchen, so customers can see their food being prepared by the chefs.
The restaurant proudly uses shell pasteurized eggs, and they believe they are the only restaurant in the county to do so. In fact, they were so impressed with the quality of these eggs, that now all of their family of restaurants have switched over to the shell pasteurized eggs for a better quality of taste for their customers. They also use chicken that is cage free, antibiotic free and steroid free. The shrimp used in the restaurant has no phosphates, again providing an excellent taste to the palate. The family of restaurants are all available for eat in or take out if you want to take your food to go. The staff eagerly awaits helping the customers in any way they can, and provides exceptional customer service.
