V

ibrant and bustling, Pooler today is almost unrecognizable from its roots. In 1864, when it was called Pooler’s Station, there were less than 200 people, most, if not all, farmers. In 2000, the official U.S Census count was 6,239, in 2010 the U.S. Census saw a threefold increase to 19,140 and the 2017 population estimate was 23,816. This growth has made Pooler one of the fastest growing cities in the southeast. The people who remember “Old Pooler” remember a far different community than the one we see today. Long time resident and business owner Jack Brewton, at 85 years young, is one of the “Old Pooler” folks who have witnessed this phenomenal growth first hand. Jack Brewton, owner of D & M Liquors, has been in Pooler since 1964. What he saw then wasn’t all that different from what Pooler looked like a hundred years before. He says, “In 1964, Pooler didn’t have any traffic lights and it was a lot of

10

farmland. It didn’t look anything at all like it looks today.” Living History Of deep southern roots, Jack can trace his family back to 1792, when two of his ancestors sold their land grants in North Carolina to purchase property in Georgia. The family stayed in Georgia and they had a sawmill out at Cedar Creek many generations ago. Jack was is originally from Evans County, Georgia and says he attributes his work ethic to his early life. He says” I worked seven days a week, 24 hours a day because you do what you have to do to get on a higher rung on the ladder. “Achieving a higher rung was important because, as he says, “I started life after the Great Depression on 1929. I was born in 1934, the fifth of five children.” He says, “My Dad worked as a wage

farmer for fifty cents a day, seven days a week. Back in the day if you didn’t work you didn’t eat. If you got sick your neighbors took care of you.” The Korean War Jack is a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean War. He recounts,” I left home at 17 years old. I served in the US Navy in the Amphibian Forces from 1951 until 1955.” He remembers the end of the war vividly.” In 1953 we brought the ship to the shipyards in San Francisco to have the barnacles scraped and the boat painted and then we headed back to the Pacific. After we got underway, we had to change course because an officer had a family emergency, his son had died, and so we headed to Midway Island and transferred the officer to a waiting boat, so he could go home. At midnight, the Captain of our ship got on the speaker and said ‘At ease men. The Armistice has been signed and we are now at peace.’ The Korean War was over.” “I was mighty glad because that was my second tour; I had made my first landing before I was 18 years old, my second landing at 18 and another in 1952. I praise the day it was over.” After the Navy Jack and his wife Sharon and their growing family moved to Jacksonville Florida where Jack worked as an electrician. He says Florida wasn’t for them and so they decided to move back home to Georgia. He says he and his family got to his father’s farm in Georgia just before

Christmas and his father said” ‘I made Pooler Auto Parts on Highway 80 across a big Christmas for you! I got the combines from what is now Wendy’s fast food in the cornfield and you ‘all can collect restaurant. The business was there for all the corn you can and sell it for your four years before they moved it to where Christmas present!’ So that’s what we did, Cash America is today. He says,” I was in men and women both, we collected all the the auto parts business in Pooler for 23 corn we could and that’s what we sold, and years total.” had our Christmas.” Jack says although Due to the state widening the road, they were grateful, it also motivated him to Jack lost frontage property and started seek out a more secure financial future for looking for another business. “The lease him and his family. Jack says, “That’s what on what was then a convenience store kept me trying to get on higher rung” with a liquor store inside was up and the They moved to Jesup where he people running it were leaving and didn’t worked first as an electrician, then in a "I had a good talk with the Lord sometime ago. He says, “I was available 24/7, as manager of the renew the lease, so I bought the inventory service station and cab business.” Always out.” He ran both D & M Liquors and self motivated, Jack says” I worked seven Pooler Auto Parts for a while but he closed days a week, 24 hours a day because you the auto parts business two years later. do what you have to do to get on a higher rung on the ladder.” Pooler Auto Parts In 1956 he went to work for Brooks Auto Parts. He says, “I was in the auto parts business a long time. I had my wife Sharon working in it too, and when we were able to accumulate a little money we bought a piece of land from her father. That was up in Pooler. Everyone said ‘Ain’t a darn thing in Pooler!’ That was a long time ago and it’s home to me now.” They opened

D & M Liquors He says at the time it was a steep learning curve with his new enterprise because the retail liquor business was radically different from the auto parts world he knew so well. He says, “I wasn’t prepared for the liquor store business. A big difference was in the purchasing side. In the auto parts business, the part is the same price whether you buy 1 or 1000 pieces. In the liquor business, it

was a shock to find out that the price was dependent on how much you bought from the wholesaler. “I didn’t have any experience in that world- the liquor business is so regulated. I have to buy from people I am designated to purchase from, and you have to put x amount of cases to get the best prices and make a profit. That’s how it works. You can only be an owner or have ownership stake in two liquor stores in the whole state.” He says he really did have a lot of help, because “ It was so different from what I knew that it took me a little while to learn it, and there was one salesman who helped me along because I was dumb! “ He eventually learned the business and today, D&M Liquors remains a thriving family business. In 2017, Jack got sick and spent seventy seven days in the hospital and turned over a lot of the day to day management to his son, Randy. Now he’s back and is actively involved again. Jack says he stays busy in the store and also maintains his properties 12

himself. “I do my own maintenance on our yard and on my properties. I keep them manicured.” When asked how he was doing he answered, “I am doing okay- not fine- but okay!”

Blessed by Life When asked what he’s learned in all the years of working with the public, Jack laughed and said, “It takes all kinds to make a world!” When asked if he was satisfied with all he has accomplished, he

said, “No, I still have not achieved what I want to achieve. I had a good talk with the Lord sometime ago. I told him I want to do better and the Lord said ‘you’ve got to work for it!’ I have had help along the way and every time I set my goals and met them, well I raise them again. I am still raising the bar!” Jack says he is blessed to have his wife Sharon and daughters Patricia (Patsy) Rodgers, Rhonda Haire, and sons Randy, Darryl and Michael. They all live in Georgia, “In hollering distance” says Jack. He says he has a few favorite spots in Pooler, “I really like Spanky’s, Sam Sneeds and of course Longhorns for a good steak”. Always up for a drive he adds, “When I get down to the Altamaha River I like to go to Benton Lee‘s Steak House in Uvalda, on Highway 1. You can’t beat their rib steak!” Asked if there is anything else he’d like to add, Jack says” I think there’s enough there!” And with that he said goodbye and went back to work climbing the ladder, one rung at a time.

f your child needs speech, occupational or physical therapy you will be glad to know there is a wonderful resource right here in Pooler that can meet your child’s pediatric therapy needs. Chatterbox Pediatric Therapy LLC is an outpatient pediatric therapy clinic with offices located in Pooler and Richmond Hill. “Our clinic was established based on a desire to simplify the lives of families by providing easily accessible speech, occupational, and physical therapy services to children in the greater Savannah area,” says owner Beth Adkisson Fleming, M.S., CCC-SLP and SLP (Speech Language Pathologist). “Our mission is to help each child reach his or her fullest potential. We do this through providing top-notch, evidence-based therapeutic principles within a fun-loving, supportive and caring environment.“

Beth says, “Our clients come to us through referrals from their pediatrician, often due to shared concerns about their child’s development by the parents and pediatrician. If parents are concerned about their child’s development, they can express that to their pediatricians for a referral.” Speech Therapy Chatterbox Pediatric Therapy provides Speech, Occupational and Physical therapy. The primary goal of Speech Therapy is to improve your child’s communication and many children see speech therapists. Sometimes a child has a medical condition that makes speaking more difficult. Most children make some mistakes as they learn to say new words. A speech sound disorder occurs when mistakes continue past a certain age. Every sound has a different range of ages when the child should make the sound correctly. Speech sound disorders include problems with articulation (making sounds) and phonological processes (sound patterns). Some children have a language disorder, which is when a child has problems with understanding, also called receptive language. Some children have problems talking, also called expressive language. Many children have problems with both understanding and talking. And some children have a voice disorder, which is defined as problems with voice quality, loudness, pitch, and resonance. OT & PT Therapy For some children with certain learning and attention issues, children who struggle with fine and gross motor skills, Occupational Therapy may be

prescribed. It can help kids become more independent and better at completing tasks. Physical impairment, injuries and a host of other issues can hamper a child's ability to perform common tasks or progress normally through the stages of social or cognitive development. Pediatric occupational therapy focuses on helping children develop the skills they need to interact with their environment and other children. Physical Therapy helps children gain critical skills related to independent mobility and gross motor functioning. Through the use of handling techniques, sensory stimulation, play and parentchild interaction, physical therapy helps children accomplish goals related to range of motion, muscle strength, posture, joint mobility, gait, and higher level gross motor development. Therapeutic success is determined by several factors. Beth says, “Consistency and persistence are key. Following up at home is also very important, so we teach parents how to work on things in the home environment. “ “Treatment sessions for kids should have a healthy dose of play and a playful spirit throughout,” Beth says, “Children like coming here. We do try to make it fun so the children want to participate and interact and don’t feel like it’s work. We have a fun environment; swings, a ball pit, a climbing wall; which we let kids use it to increase their movement. And fun is a great motivator, so having fun helps your child make progress. “ In Good Hands Led by Owner Beth Adkisson Fleming, M.S., CCC-SLP, the Chatterbox Team is comprised of over 30 therapists and office staff combined. Beth received her Bachelor in Communication Disorders and graduated from Armstrong Atlantic State University with a Master of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders. She has extensive experience with Applied Behavioral Analysis/Verbal Behavior Therapy and has a special interest in working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Severe/Profound Developmental Delays. She holds her Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association and is licensed to practice in the state of Georgia. She says, “Our therapists are dedicated to providing children, families and physicians with the highest quality therapy services available within a fun learning environment,” says Beth, “We have wonderful therapists- we have been blessed.”

“It is really gratifying to see how parents support each other. Look in our waiting room and you will see parents sharing helpful information with each other every day. Sometimes friends will back away from a family when a child has issues, but in our waiting rooms that same family finds support and camaraderie. Anything is scary for any parent when a child is not developing ‘on par’. Listening to other parents’ success stories reiterates that they are in the right place and headed in the right direction.” Family Friendly Chatterbox Pediatric Therapy LLC takes a wide range of insurance including Wellcare. They strive to be flexible with appointment times because they know how hard it is for working families to make appointments. Beth assures, “We try our hardest to work with families whether that be financially or scheduling appointments. We try our hardest to take the stress out of therapy. We aren’t always able to provide the perfect solution, but we do our very best when we can, we always try our very best.”

Rewards “The joy in a parent’s eye when they see progress, when they witness a “first” - a first word, a first step, a first new food. When they see progress in the home environment, when a child who was previously unable to eat in public without a meltdown has a peaceful family meal at Chick-fil-A”! says Beth, “It is very gratifying to see the benefits of our hard work, the child‘s hard work and the parents hard work. Therapy is an ongoing process, sometimes for years. Progress from age two to age nine can be seen as baby steps on a day to day basis, but when we look back in retrospect we can see the huge steps gained over the years.” The waiting room at Chatterbox is often bustling full of children and their families who are there waiting for their therapy appointments. But while the children are in therapy, the chaos settles and the mood becomes much more calm. Beth shares,

Chamber offers many benefits that can help a company grow. “We advertise your business with sponsorship opportunities, your “Name in Lights” program, social media and more. Business networking is another main focus with our business referrals, Business After Hours events, and ribbon cuttings,” adds Balish. The Pooler Chamber also puts an emphasis on community involvement with various events throughout the year, and the Chamber-Sponsored Student Scholarship Program. Take it from Daniel Cloutier, owner of Molly McPherson’s Scottish Pub and Grill. He has benefited greatly from being a member. “The Chamber is great, they really are. Become a member of the Chamber. Get involved, allow the chamber to help you, to give you advice, things like that. Allow them to use their advertising to promote your business,” says Cloutier. Ten years ago, the Chamber started with around 100 members. Today, there are more than 400 members and the membership list is steadily growing, and that means a bigger support system for businesses. No matter the size of your business, every type is welcome. “We

offer memberships for a one-person business to a business with over 500 employees. While the majority are businesses/business owners, we also have individual members as well,” says Balish. Joining the Chamber allows one plenty of access to other businesses and a wealth of support in terms of advertising and promotion. A membership investment also allows the Chamber to also promote tourism through community events such as the Sip & Savor/Casino Night, Food Truck Fest & Marketplace, Hearts for Heroes Gala, and more. These events are very successful. This year’s Food Truck Fest & Marketplace will take place on Saturday, October 5. Last year was the first Food Truck Fest and Balish was blown away by the support from the community with their attendance. “This year we are making it bigger and better, combining the festival with our Fall Marketplace. The Food Truck Fest & Marketplace will have over 30 food trucks, rides for all ages, entertainment, and vendors,” says Balish. The Hearts for Heroes Gala (a BlackTie Affair) has been noted as the most prestigious event in Chatham County. The support from sponsors and attendees has allowed the Chamber to donate to the beneficiary for that year. Last year, $30,000 was donated to the 200 Club of the Coastal Empire. Balish says they are proud to be able to present this event as well as other great events. Pricing for businesses is based on how many people the business employees. “Being a chamber member has grown my business through just networking with connections. It’s really enabled me to make better decisions as a business owner in the city and to have other people to talk to about how their business has gone over the years,” says Steve Thomas, managing partner, Texas Roadhouse. “It’s extremely important to become involved in the Chamber. While Balish has only been with the Chamber for a short time, she’s always been supportive of what the Chamber does. She focuses on fundraising and sponsorship, as well as new membership information and enrollment. “I enjoy visiting businesses and learning more about your company. I am here to help members connect with other members, and promote the Pooler Chamber of Commerce,” says Balish. Steve Larson, owner of Pita Pit knows firsthand what it means to have the Chamber working for him. He opened his Pita Pit Pooler location last September and the support was tremendous. “The Chamber has been a great entity for me. They do amazing grand openings, and I’m very thankful for them to help me build this business,” says Larson. The Pooler Chamber of Commerce is located at 404 U.S. 80 West. POOLER CITY HALL WELCOMES YOUR BUSINESS

24

www.PoolerMagazine.com | July/August 2019

FROM THE MAYOR'S DESK

T

he mayor and members of the City Council of Pooler are business friendly and dedicated to maintaining a balanced and thriving economy. Pooler's city limits encompasses nearly 29 square miles, a large portion of which is still wide open for development. City Hall's knowledgeable staff ensures that anyone interested in land development, construction or establishing a business in Pooler gets swift and professional assistance. Adequate water and sewer are available for development and there are attractive retail spaces in established commercial projects. The area has an available workforce compromised of both skilled and unskilled labor. The two nearby military bases also provide a sizable labor source through families associated with military personnel. Georgia Southern University (formerly Armstrong Atlantic State University), Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah Technical Institute and The Georgia Tech Engineering Program provide qualified graduates equipped with a wide variety of skills. Our city leadership has worked very hard to prepare the city for the vast growth they have experienced over the last several years. With all new infrastructure and policies in place, Pooler is definitely the place to be.

Hello friends and neighbors‌

If you are considering opening a business in Pooler, here is a little help to get you started!

It is an honor to be the Mayor of Pooler, Georgia. We are one of the fastest growing cities in Georgia. In the 2010 census we nearly tripled our population and many new businesses have located in our city. We have long been known as the targeted area for growth but with I 95, I 16, US 80 and Pooler Parkway going through the center of our city I believe we are the bull’s eye for growth.

HOW TO OBTAIN A BUSINESS LICENSE Business Registration Applications for the registration of business and commercial water service are available through the City Clerk's office. Occupational tax fees are based on the number of full-time (40 hr/wk) employees and the rate structure can be found in Chapter 26 of the City Ordinances. Information to be provided on the application includes: business name/ doing business as, type of business, location address, telephone number, mailing address, sole proprietor or corporate name/information and business manager's name. For those businesses with more than 10 employees, an E-Verify number must be provided, per O.C.G.A. 36-60-6. An affidavit verifying status in the U.S. is required for all applications along with a copy of a secure and verifiable document (i.e., driver's license, military ID, passport, permanent resident card). All businesses subject to Georgia Sales & Use Tax requirements are asked to provide a sales and use tax identification number (begins with the number 3). A water deposit in the amount of $150.00 is required for property that is leased and a copy of the lease must be provided to establish service. Proof of ownership (i.e., closing statement, warranty deed) must be provided for those owning property. A Building/Life Safety inspection is required for any existing spaces or buildings prior to the issuance of an occupational tax certificate. Any building or space that has been newly constructed or renovated within the past six (6) months is not required to be inspected. The building inspections department can be reached at 912-748-6652. Home business offices (telephone use only) are required to meet a list of criteria (provided with the application) and homeowners must ensure that there are no restrictive subdivision covenants prohibiting business offices.

The 1000 plus businesses we have vary in size from Mom and Pop to world wide known organizations. We strive to be the city that has it all. The city of Pooler is blessed to have a great city staff, caring citizens and we are known to be one of the safest place to live. Our city has seen a lot of growth since 1907 but I believe we have many more exciting days ahead of us. Mike Lamb Mayor

It’s our hearts that sets us apart.” And Country Financial is in a very select group of companies rated A or better by A.M. Best, an independent industry rating company. The A+ (Superior) rating reflects a company’s superior ability to meet their insurance obligations. Country Financials A+ (Superior) ratings are based on: · Strong risk-adjusted capitalization · Profitable operating earnings, including investment returns · Favorable geographic and product line diversification · Growing enterprise risk management capabilities

BURN

Boot Camp

W

hat sets Burn Boot Camp apart is our community.” says Steph Worley, Burn Boot Camp Franchise Partner, “Words can’t fully describe it. You have to walk in the door and experience it.” Steph and her husband Jared opened the Pooler location of Burn Boot Camp in August 2018 and are honored to be part of the Pooler health and fitness community. Burn Boot Camp was founded by Devan and Morgan Kline in 2012 and has grown to over 200 locations nationwide. Burn Boot Camp offers an even mix of challenging exercises, unique programming and a fun atmosphere. It is their goal to make sure that you never do the same workout twice and always aim for continual progress. Burn caters to women but does offer limited co-ed camps. What makes Burn so successful? Unlimited Camps Burn offers 45 minute group workouts called “camps” and camps are unlimited meaning there is no limit on the number of camps you can attend. Camps are available Monday-Saturday, and you are not required to sign up in advance—just show up at a time that is convenient for you! Steph explains, “Our workouts are tough but can be modified for all fitness levels— from beginners to athletes. We don’t use intimidating machines, and we don’t have a weight room. We use equipment such as dumbbells, kettle bells, etc. and bodyweight.

Every Sunday a new weekly protocol is released from HQ and the protocol is the same for every Burn Boot Camp location. The protocol alternates between burst (HIIT), think cardio, and strength training. Workout programming, however, is created by the training team at each location. Pooler’s team of Certified Personal Trainers is led by Head Trainer Christina Cocita. Who better to lead strong women than a strong woman? Complimentary Childwatch Parents can workout worry-free with Burn’s complimentary Childwatch services. Steph reassures, “We have a great Childwatch team. Each team member has been vetted and is experienced.” Your child will enjoy Burn Boot Camp just as much as you do! Focus Meetings Burn Boot Camp is truly a Lifestyle Transformation Program. Steph states, “We don’t only focus on your workout. With ‘optionally-mandatory’ Focus Meetings, our trainers will know the ins and outs of your nutrition habits, mindset challenges and personal goals.” These 1:1 appointments are included with every trial and membership for no additional cost.

travelling, you can workout at another location for free. If you move, you may transfer your membership, as well. Free 14 Day Trial Steph and Jared started their fitness journey together 3 years ago with no formal training, simply a desire to change. After training at home for a year and a half and at the urging of friends, Steph went to Burn Boot Camp’s Bluffton location for a free trial. She says, “After that first camp, I went home and signed Jared up for a trial. Seven months later, we started the process to bring Burn Boot Camp to Pooler.” “I truly believe women in every community need access to a Burn Boot Camp. It can change your life. Burn offers a no obligation 14 day free trial—no credit card required to sign up. Saturday camps are also free, co-ed and open to the public. Just show up 15 minutes before your first camp to get started. Burn is a fitness community full of encouragement not competition. We dish out a lot of high fives! n 1838, the first railroad station west of Savannah was named for Robert William Pooler. William W. Gordon, president of Central of Georgia Railroad, named the station for Pooler as a reward for the difficult and tedious work he had completed on a feasibility study to determine the route that the railroad would take through various Georgia towns and counties. Neither man could know that on December 9, 1864, General William T. Sherman and his troops would make camp beside that very railroad station in preparation for their siege of Savannah. At that time, less than 200 people lived in the isolated and impoverished Pooler community As the South recovered from the Reconstruction era, a visionary Pooler resident, Ben Rothwell, bought several hundred acres in the community. He pioneered a new method of community development, giving lots to those who would build permanent homes. Dan Newton, another visionary, built the first Baptist Church in what is now Gleason Park. He also built a Presbyterian Church and donated lumber for Trinity Methodist Church. A sawmill was built to supply lumber and a brickyard established to supply other needs. Today, remains of the brickyard can be located near the railroad tracks just south of I-95. Pooler had a population of just 337 when it incorporated in 1907. The first Pooler Town Hall was built in 1923. That building was sold to the town of Register, Georgia when a new town hall was constructed in the 1960’s. Register restored the building that now serves as its town hall and police department headquarters. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places Dairies played an important role in Pooler’s economy and were abundant in the community. At one time, there were 15 dairies operating in the area. Through the years, many other businesses established in Pooler including a theater, soda fountain shop, drug stores, grocery stores, gas stations,

auto repair shops, five and dime store, post office and, of course, the train depot. There was a bus station served by Greyhound, Southeastern Stages and Trailways. A business that was established in 1927 is still in operation today: Shearouse Sawmill and Lumber Company. In 1928, paving of U.S. Highway 80 through Pooler was completed by the federal government, making it easier for Pooler residents to go into Savannah for many of their shopping needs.

In the 1950s, major structural changes took place in Pooler. The post office moved from the train depot to a site on Highway 80 and dependence on rail service decreased. This eventually led to the abandonment of railroad tracks through Pooler. The railroad tracks were removed to make way for Highway 80 eastbound traffic. The original Highway 80 was designated for westbound traffic. In 1956, construction began on Interstate 95 that would eventually stretch from Maine to Miami and touch the edge of Pooler. The interchange at I-95 and Highway 80 and I-95 and Pooler Parkway is now a major site for businesses that cater to the tourist industry.

In the 1960s, a new town hall and community center were built on Rogers Street. A fire station, constructed on the site of the old train depot, is still on operation today. The first subdivision, Gleason Heights, was developed andWest Chatham Library built. Pooler’s growth was slow and steady through the 70s and 80s, remaining a small, proud community. In the 1990s, the sleepy pace of the small town changed. Forward thinking city officials conducted well thought out annexation, contributing to a strong tax base for Pooler. In 1996, the National Museum of The Mighty Eighth Air Force opened its 90,000 sq. ft. facility near I-95 and Highway 80 in Pooler. J.C. Bamford (JCB) Company built a 500,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility and a mega site at I-95 and I-16 has been developed. Mitsubishi Power Systems recently started operations at a portion of the mega-site. This is all within Pooler’s city limits. The growth along Pooler Parkway has been tremendous over the last several years. Having to drive into "town" (Savannah) has become a thing of the past. Pooler, Georgia has everything to offer to its residents, its businesses.... and its visitors. Pooler now boasts many entertainment spots, a huge array of restaurants, both locally owned and national chains, shopping galore, recreation at its best...not to mention some of the best medical facilities in this part of the state. What more could you ask for? Home town feel? Even with all its growth, Pooler still offers a serene, secure and affordable small town atmosphere for families and businesses.
