Pooler Magazine is proudly produced by:
The weather is changing....warmer days are here. But, in South Georgia, we all know that the weather changes on a daily basis, sometimes hourly. I have thoroughly enjoyed the warmer days we have been fortunate enough to have. I have also embraced the cooler ones, knowing that spring is around the corner and then the dreadful hot days of summer. Sometimes we don’t see the seasons change as much as other parts of the United States, but when they do, they are here to stay. With spring approaching soon, we think of all the ‘projects’ we have been putting off. There is yard work to be done, flowers to plant, pressure washing, new paint, a new patio or outdoor kitchen, porches to be enclosed, renovations...the list goes on and on. Julie Hales, PUBLISHER With that being said, we are gearing up for our annual Home and Garden issue. This great issue is scheduled for our next magazine, the May/June issue. We will have wonderful articles about local services that can help you get all these ‘projects’ done. If you have a story idea for this issue, please let us know. Or, if you own a business that provides any of these services....anything to do with the home....call us. We will tell you how you can have your business included in this popular issue of Pooler Magazine. Also, this issue will be proudly displayed on our website, poolermagazine.com. Our past issues are now available on-site for you to read in their entirety, another service offered by us at Pooler Magazine. DANIEL
Faith, Family and Firearms Story by SHANNON ROBINSON Photos by MIRANDA OSBORN
I
t was in the midst of the economic growth at the turn of the 21st century that the owner of an established small business in Garden City, Georgia, Daniel Overhead Door & Fireplace, serendipitously stumbled upon a new business venture. Seeing the potential for success, and even though it was unfamiliar territory, he and his wife took a leap of faith and invested. Now, as the business celebrates fifteen years, Marty and Cindy Daniel share their secrets to balancing family life with their labor of love, Daniel Defense. Marty Daniel is no stranger to success, but he has hurdled quite a few failures en route. He was born in Savannah, though his parents were originally from the Claxton, Georgia area, where his father owned a family farm that had been in the family for generations. They came to call Savannah home when his father decided to join the railroad instead of carrying on the farming tradition. The family slowly migrated back toward the farm, ending up in Bellville, Georgia where Marty lived until he graduated from high school. After high school, Marty headed off to college at Georgia Southern University, where he flunked out twice. After the second failure, Marty received a letter asking him not to reapply to Georgia Southern. Somehow he was able to convince the college a year later to let him reapply, and it was then Marty was able to earn a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering Technology. Marty is now on the board of advisors for the engineering school at Georgia Southern – and he’s the only board member who failed out twice. “It’s because his mama got him a job at the saw mill and that was a lot of work,” Cindy candidly offered with a laugh. “Yeah, she was continuing my education,” Marty agreed. “I tell that story a lot,” he continued, “because I want people to know it’s okay to fail. You’re going to have failures in life. As you get older, you try to learn from your failures… Learn what you don’t want to do and try not to make those same mistakes again.” Directly after college, Marty partnered in a business that hung custom garage doors and installed fireplaces. Though it wasn’t what he’d earned a degree in, it served to teach him a good bit about the business world. Those lessons have proved invaluable to him as he’s forged forward. In 1991, Marty hired Cindy, then a high school senior, part-time to help with clerical and administrative duties. She was hired on full-time after graduation, and began learning every aspect of the business. Then in 1997, when Marty decided to buy out his business partner, Cindy took over the daily management responsibilities. She represented the company as an active member and officer for both Savannah’s and Statesboro’s Homebuilder’s Associations. Cindy had always been someone who enjoyed working. She was only nine or ten years old when she got her first job. She began helping “Old Man Tuten,” a local shop owner on Rogers Street, in order to make some spending money. She often wrote out his bills or worked in his store. www.PoolerMagazine.com | March/April 2016

Born in Winder, Georgia, Cindy spent a few years attending high school in Guyton but lived in Pooler for most of her life. She played sports for the Pooler Recreation Department, and to this day continues to proudly say she’s a Pooler Packer. But when Cindy wasn’t playing sports, she was working. It was those early business lessons and her strong work ethic that would later help her meet the challenges of managing a company. Little did Cindy know then, but the obstacles she tackled daily in the business world would soon grow into a gauntlet. It happened in early 2000. After repeated frustrations on the golf course, Marty came to terms with another failure. He was horrible at golf. “A friend of mine actually said ‘well, if your golf game is bad, you ought to come shooting with me,’” Marty recalled with a smile. So, he did just that. “I had grown up shooting for hunting purposes. That was the first time I had ever been introduced to shooting for the fun of shooting or shooting for target practice. So, we did a lot of that type thing, and that’s where I learned to shoot in a self-defense method,” Marty elaborated. “And I enjoyed it,” he emphasized. “Everyday that I did go to the range, I didn’t come home aggravated like I did playing golf – I came home relaxed. Even if I shot bad, I still had a good day,” he recalled with a huge grin. Daniel Defense was soon born from the ashes of Marty’s golf game. By 2009, the couple who married in 2005, decided they could no longer devote the attention needed to run two businesses simultaneously -- especially in the wake of the defense business’s popularity and success. They sold Daniel Overhead Door & Fireplace and began concentrating all their efforts on Daniel Defense.

Cindy and Marty didn’t let their priorities shift, though. They continued their efforts, which started during the early years of their first business, helping out where they could in the community. At first, it was physical labor like when the church they attended needed a new building, but as the couple’s business began to prosper, they were able to help much more. And because they realized how great of a need there was among young churches throughout the community, Assets for Christ, a 501(c) (3) charitable organization was developed. In addition to helping area churches, the couple holds a special place in their hearts for military men and women. They regularly sponsor events to benefit the organizations that support those that serve, as well as the community in general. They feel that God has provided for them in abundance so that they can, in turn, make a difference where it’s needed. Between the business that keeps Marty and Cindy on their toes 24/7 and their involvement with charity work and their church, First Presbyterian of Pooler, it’s impressive that they are able to make time for family life. “Our life is a lot of work, you know, and we carve out time at home for kids. Other than that we’re working,” Marty said of their day-to-day home life. “We manage to turn work off for a few hours in the afternoon. Even though I love to cook, I don’t usually have time, so we pick Connor up and usually go out to eat,” Cindy explained, “but as soon as his head hits the pillow, we are back working -- until midnight sometimes.” Marty and Cindy have two kids. Twenty-one year old Harlee is in her third year of college. She remains undecided on a career path, and Marty and Cindy are unsure if she’ll want to eventually take part in the family business. They tried to introduce her to the clerical side of the business while she was in high school, but she

didn’t show much interest at the time. Connor, on the other hand, is eight years old and has already decided that he will be Daniel Defense’s future CEO – He even has his own trade show badge that says “Future CEO.” When he’s not in school, the ambitious young man is quite content attending trade shows with his parents or accompanying them on a quail hunt. He’s also quite active in sports with the Pooler Recreation Department as well – A Pooler Packer just like his mom. Just finishing up, and doing so undefeated, Connor recently played his last basketball game of the season. Soon soccer will start up, and Marty and Cindy will return to the fan section to cheer him on. “I’m the crazy mom up there screaming at all the kids,” Cindy confided with a smile. It’s due to that connection with the Pooler community, especially Pooler Recreational Department, that Marty and Cindy decided to sponsor the new Pooler Stadium. “Connor has been in Pooler his whole life too, and when we go to basketball or soccer games, all the folks that I played sports with are there with their own kids,” Cindy marveled. Other than daily family responsibilities, any vacation they take together usually begins as a business trip that the Daniels worked family time into. And when warmer weather arrives, they’ll try to go boating as much as possible because they all enjoy the water. With all that Marty and Cindy Daniel have worked to achieve, and all they accomplish on a daily basis, it’s bewildering to think of how they must balance their work and home life. Alain de Botton once said, “There is no such thing as work-life balance. Everything worth fighting for unbalances your life.” One thing is certain, with their faith placed firmly in God, they don’t seem to be too worried about it.

Christopher “Champ” Easter: Making Every Line Count
C
Story by KATRICE WILLIAMS Photos by LUKE SMITH and provided by The Easter Family
hristopher Easter, better known as Champ, is a 17-year-old senior at Savannah Christian Preparatory School. Champ is a native of Statesboro but has lived in Pooler for about 10 years. Over the past couple of years, he has become quite acclimated with the stage. Champ is a talented drama student who loves what he does. Moreover, though Champ is already a very noteworthy performer, he plans to attend Mercer University and obtain a law degree. Yes, Champ wants to be a lawyer—possibly a defense attorney. In fact, he has been very interested in law for quite some time. Presently, he enjoys public speaking and is confident that his drama and theatrical talents will enhance his public speaking skills. He is quite certain that those skills will build a beneficial foundation for his future law pursuits, as strong public speaking skills are a valuable asset in the law profession. There are numerous individuals that have been great mentors to Champ over the years. “I have multiple inspirations. A multitude of people inspire me to do what I want,” he says. Champ mentions an individual that he is very proud to call an inspiration—his drama instructor Mrs. Donna Stembridge. He remarks, “My drama teacher, Mrs. Donna Stembridge, has been an incredible inspiration to me. She was the one who got me started here. I actually wasn’t doing anything theatre-related before 10th grade. Mrs. Stembridge has always been a big role model for me because of all the success she’s had in theatre. Almost everything theatre, she runs.” Prior to the start of his theatrical endeavors, Mrs. Stembridge encouraged Champ to participate in a choral-type performance at Disney World during his sophomore year. “I loved it,” he states.
16 March/April 2016 | www.PoolerMagazine.com
Champ is enrolled in Mrs. Stembridge’s first period drama class, which consists of the actors; he is also enrolled in her second period production class, which includes directors and others on the set. There is one big annual spring musical which is open to students in grades 3-12. Students are allowed to try out without being enrolled in the drama class. Champ explains that tryouts include a preliminary round that requires actors to memorize a song, have a 1-2 minute monologue and perform a dance routine. Main rounds require site reading and the mastering of a song and dance regiment from the production, while final rounds include call backs where chosen individuals are brought back in to audition for specific roles. What’s more, there are two 1-Act plays each semester open only to students enrolled in the high school drama class. Auditions are held in class, and students perform at Armstrong State University. Drama students also have two exam plays, where “Mrs. Stembridge takes a step back and lets the students design the show.” Presently, Champ is working on the production of Mary Poppins, the school’s spring musical. Thereafter, he is taking part in Shuddersome: Tales of Poe, a 1-Act play. In Mary Poppins, Champ is playing the role of Herr Von Hussler, a German merchant who swindles banks. Champ plays the part of the Shudders in Shuddersome, which are really multiple plays all inside of one big play. Regarding the Shudders, he says, “The Shudders are mysterious characters. They’re not ensemble characters but much more prominent than that.” He feels that though the Shudders have no specific names, “they enhance the story.” They are in all of the scenes together throughout the play. Champ remembers his first theatrical performance—Peter Pan - which was during his sophomore year. He played the role of Mr.

Darling, the father of all the kids; he was also the crocodile in the play. During that same year, he performed as Gaston, the main antagonist in Beauty and the Beast. Champ mentions that he really doesn’t mind playing either protagonist or antagonist roles. He insists, “Both the protagonist and antagonist are truly really fun roles to play.” There is a role that Champ has always wanted to play—Genie from Aladdin. “I like being the more loud, projecting characters, because they fit my personality,” he declares. Last April, Champ was chosen to perform at the Shuler Hensley Awards, which were held in Atlanta at the Cobb Energy Center. The overall purpose of the awards is to recognize and promote excellence in high school musical theatre while celebrating the arts that are in high schools across Georgia. Champ, along with other chosen talents, performed three musical numbers. He considered that to be a huge honor. Champ mentions some of his favorite performers. He admires Colm Wilkinson, the actor best known for his role as Jean Valjean in Les Miserables. He is also fond of Michael Crawford, who starred in the original Phantom of the Opera, which happens to be Champ’s favorite live show. Champ is looking forward to spring break since Mrs. Stembridge has organized a trip to New York for her drama students. Champ and many of his fellow classmates will watch two Broadway Shows. They will get the opportunity to go behind the scenes
18 March/April 2016 | www.PoolerMagazine.com
and even meet some of the performers. One of the shows that they plan to watch happens to be Aladdin. “I’m really excited about that,” Champ says. Champ also finds time to be involved in other activities at school. This talented young man has been in the concert band since his freshman year; he plays the euphonium, a brass instrument resembling a tuba. Champ also plays the baritone horn in the marching band, where he is co-brass captain. Tennis has been Champ’s sport of choice for some time now; he has played since his freshman year. Furthermore, he has taken part in Literary Competition since his junior year. Additionally, he is currently a soloist singing harmonious tunes to the a cappella melodies of the barbershop quartet musical ensemble. In his spare moments, Champ likes to spend time with his family—his mom Carla, his dad Chris, his brother Chase and his dog Charlie. He also enjoys playing war games with his dad. Champ likes to read, and he tries to make time for some well-deserved rest and relaxation. Champ has some beneficial advice for young people, stating, “Don’t be afraid to take a leap; if you miss and fall, it’ll be alright in the end. You could end up finding something that you never knew.” Champ Easter is a young man who displays a great deal of talent on the stage and off. He is looking forward to a bright future, and it is definitely within his reach.

Lanah “Lan” Le:
Capturing Moments One Brush Stroke at a Time
L
Story by KATRICE WILLIAMS
anah Le, also known as Lan, is a junior at New Hampstead High School, and she has been a tremendously talented artist for a long time now. Originally from Vietnam, Lan and her family have lived in the U.S. for five years. Soon after arriving in the country, they moved to the local area. “It’s like my hometown. We haven’t moved anywhere else,” Lan mentions. Speaking of home, Lan says, “I’ve been thinking about my own house since fifth grade. I do calculations and draw out my plans and everything.” Art and math have been Lan’s favorite subjects for some time. She feels that “it’s a good combination.” Lan is confident that the two fields will set a valuable foundation for her future career aspirations, design-based engineering. There have been several noteworthy individuals in Lan’s life since she has been in this country. However, she said that Mr. Shehane, her math teacher, is immensely inspiring. He has been her math teacher for about three years. Lan feels that he motivates his students to positively challenge themselves. She says that he tells his students, “Don’t be afraid to go find your own answer.” Lan is definitely no stranger to art. She can remember doing it as far back as Pre-K, though it was obviously not on the same level. Even then, her teacher saw the potential within her. She told Lan’s mom that she was a great artist and suggested that Lan be encouraged to explore her artistic talent. Presently, Lan puts a lot of her effort towards her artwork and has created a large collection of beautiful art over the past few years. Surprisingly, Lan has never been enrolled in any formal art classes outside of school, and she does not hesitate to give her mom some well-deserved credit. “A lot of things come natural because of my mom; she’s really into art and designing and all of that. She’s not an artist, but she has that blood in her. When I do my art, I get engaged in her world. We combine everything together, and I often ask her opinion about my artwork,” she states. Lan also finds it beneficial to become acclimated with the work of other artists and occasionally even adopt some of their techniques. Further, Lan’s high school pathway is visual arts, so she has taken a series of art classes since the start of her high school career. She is currently enrolled in AP Drawing, taught by Mr.

Photos by MIRANDA OSBORN John Hoyman, who has instructed Lan in previous art classes. Lan has been familiar with the different painting mediums for a long time now. Whether using watercolor, acrylic or gouache paint, she is able to create true beauty with the strokes of her paintbrush. Interestingly enough, one of Lan’s favorite artists is Erté, a talented painter well-known for his paintings using gouache. In fact, Lan began using gouache after being inspired by his work; he was also a world-renowned sculptor and fashion designer. Nevertheless, Lan prefers watercolor, as it has brilliant color clarity and is transparent and thin, granting the artist the ability to do transparent layering. Lan recalls her first experience using watercolor, after being encouraged by her 6th grade teacher in Vietnam to experiment with other color mediums besides crayon. She remembers being very inexperienced with it, so she used it straight out of the tube. Lan laughs and says, “I learned in the U.S. that you have to put water in watercolor.” Within her pathway, Lan is concentrating her artistic efforts on a series of paintings of Vietnamese women. Obviously, it is something that is close to her heart as she, too, is a young lady from Vietnam. She reveals a portrait that she painted of a Vietnamese woman draped in a beautiful, traditional Vietnamese dress. Lan appreciates the many dynamics encompassing womanhood. She also values the character and personality evident in women’s choices of fashion and dress. Lan comments, “Most women strive for something different. As an artist, I observe all that.” Lan goes on to explain how she comes up with the names for her art. Most are based on what is evident in the painting. Some are inspired by personal emotions, and some are even inspired by songs. Lan reveals a painting of a Vietnamese woman with blue hair that she named “Blue Hair,” which was inspired by a song. Lan says that if a Vietnamese woman is said to have blue hair, it means that “she is youthful and beautiful.” She shows another painting—“Gold’- that is also inspired by a song. She smiles and explains that some people say that Asians have yellow skin, but the song says it is actually gold as some of the lyrics suggest… “You say yellow; I say gold.” Therefore, Lan painted the skin of the woman in her portrait a beautiful golden color. Lan pulls out a painting called “Berries.” She recalls seeing her sister with a bowl of berries at home one day and felt the immediate urge to paint them. Feeling that they were just plain old berries, Lan’s sister

looked at her in astonishment after noticing her interest. However, with the heart of a true artist, Lan thought, “These berries are beautiful.” A few pieces of Lan’s artwork from her AP Art Class were entered into the Congressional Exhibit at Armstrong State University which began on February 18 and lasted through March 6. Lan has come a long way since middle school, when she won 2nd place in Chatham County in her middle school’s Reflections Contest, a middle school contest that allows students to compete by showing various artistic talents. She submitted a photograph of her sister in a traditional Vietnamese dress and another in which she captured the innocence and precious beauty of a baby. She took the photos with her iPod. The pictures were photographed with enough creativity and quality to earn her 2nd place in Chatham County. Lan speaks highly of two very important mentors in her life—her mom and dad. Concerning her dad, she states, “In life, he’s very determined on what he wants to do; his determination and his dedication to one thing— that’s what leads him to success. He’s a very smart man too.” Regarding her mom, Lan says, “Whatever she does, she has to be the best at it.” Lananh “Lan” Le likes to capture priceless moments with the gentle strokes of her paint brush. In her own words, “Art is like an adventure. It’s a life-lesson. Through art, I learn to be patient…to be observant.” With her undeniable potential, there are a lot of wonderful things in store for this talented young lady.

Zach Albers: Seriously Funny
T
Story by CINDY BURBAGE
he legendary comedian Milton Berle said that “laughter is an instant vacation,” and he’s not the only one to appreciate the value of a good laugh. Humor has been said to be the best antidote to the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and statistics say laughter lightens your encumbrances, connects you to others, encourages faith, and keeps you interested in the world around you. For a comedian like Pooler’s Zach Albers, laughter is the reason you get up in the morning. Zach, an up and coming comic on the local circuit, developed a passion for comedy at the age of 20 after tuning in to comedian Bill Burr’s Monday Morning podcasts. At the end of each show, Burr read emails from aspiring entertainers inquiring how to get started in the business. “The more people would ask him that, the more I felt like I should give it a try. I’ve always followed good stand-up comedians,” Zach shared. The more he listened, the more his comic ambition grew. “I was ready to write some jokes,” he continued. That was two years ago, and Zach began writing material. He worked on jokes for close to six months before actually performing for the first time at a show in Athens. “I’ve always been decently comfortable with public speaking, but the night of my first show, my knees were shaking; I’ve never had that before. The only thing I was really worried about was not remembering my stuff. I didn’t want to get up there and just forget my jokes.” As Zach came to terms with his nerves, he brought his fledgling act to the Comedy Open Mic night at Chuck’s Bar in Savannah.
Photos by LUKE SMITH Chuck’s Bar is located on historic River Street, and Zach and a group of eight to ten local comedians perform weekly on Tuesday nights. It isn’t the only game in town for local comedians, just one of the best. “The shows outside from Chuck’s are difficult, the audience doesn’t really know they are there for the comedy, and that makes for a tough show,” the comedian confessed. Chuck’s Bar, on the other hand, is where Zach can work on his jokes in front of a supportive but critical audience. He will write new jokes and try them out there to see how the crowd reacts. “Sometimes I have these jokes that I’m really excited about, and they don’t go so well. But I’ve got this confidence now that when something doesn’t go well, I’ll just write another one. So many comics have these jokes that they think are great, but when they don’t work, they get bummed out about it. They keep trying but it just doesn’t work. When I’m at Chuck’s, the crowd knows me and are prepared to laugh, so if something doesn’t work there, I just scratch it. I’m pretty certain it isn’t going to work somewhere else,” he said. There are many different genres when it comes to comedy. Cringe comedy is based on embarrassing situations, the humor derived from inappropriate language and actions. There is also improvisation, where the comedian doesn’t rehearse his material and basically wings it. Zach’s approach to comedy is wide open. “Nothing is really off the table for discussion,” he said. Although his jokes are not family friendly, he frequently brings the house down with laughter with his topical humor of current events, not to mention his humor on parenting and race.

His inspirations are drawn from legendary comic Bill Burr, who, according to Zach, is probably the whole reason he ever started writing jokes. His on stage persona is inspired by star comedian Anthony Jeselnik. “He is probably the only comedian I ever saw who is openly arrogant on stage. And that just blended into my persona so well. I was afraid to talk that way in the beginning,” he shared. In the end, Jeselnik’s confidence led Zach to add the arrogance into his stage façade. Now, Zach’s plans are to move to Chicago and go after a career in comedy. Although many famous comic actors got their start to fame with stand-up acts, acting is not his goal. However, once Zach is an established comedian, acting is something he’d consider, but it’s comedy first and foremost. “Ever since I started doing this I knew I wanted to be this great stand-up comedian,” Zach said, and that might be half the battle. Celebrated comedian George Burns once said: “Look to the future, because that is where you’ll spend the rest of your life.” Hilarity can be contagious; one laugh from one person can spread to an entire audience. Comedy may appear to be all about fun, but it takes hard work and perseverance to make it to the top. And while sharing personal experiences with complete strangers is not always easy, having them laugh at your comedy is golden. Zach Albers guiding star Bill Burr has proclaimed, “My favorite kind of humor is basically, if it was happening to you, it wouldn’t be funny, but to observe it, it’s hilarious.” Pooler’s funny man will be performing one of his biggest shows, Laughs and Drafts, on Saturday March 19 at Southbound Brewery, featuring four other local comedians as well.

Tyler Cooler:
Smudging & Sketching Story by CINDY BURBAGE Photos by LUKE SMITH
I
n today’s society, some teenagers live for the moment and in the moment, not giving much thought to tomorrow and what it can bring. And though high school seniors can be faced with questions such as “What will you do when you graduate?” or “Where will you go to college?,” some don’t know their plans despite being on the brink of adulthood. Now meet New Hampstead High School senior Tyler Cooler, who has an animated future designed. His future is in comic book art. Tyler, the youngest of four boys, has lived all of his seventeen years in Pooler. President of the New Hampstead High School Art Honor Society, Tyler discovered his desire to draw as a toddler and doesn’t remember a time he was not able to caricature. The artistic talent that this young man has is impressive. His preference is dry media, with his forte being graphite drawing. With the use of a tool called a blending stump, he is able to manipulate his pencil sketching, making the graphite strokes smooth and unified. Then, the simple handling of an eraser brings into play the highlights of the picture, capturing the details, and metamorphosing the drawing into a lifelike figure. Every strand of hair, every crease in the clothing is realistic-even down to a famous facial trademark, such as an intimidating squint. Admiring the true to life illustration, one can hear the tough Outlaw Josey Wales utter, “Are you gonna pull those pistols or whistle Dixie?” Although iconic gun slingers are probably fun to draw, that is not Tyler’s first choice. The dexterous student creates portraits from multiple areas- super heroes and comic book villains are his expertise. The masked heroes are meticulously placed on the sheet with their chiseled shape and the ready- to- defend- theworld demeanor, completely armored. He pulls his ideas from pop culture, video games, books and faces. The portfolio of the many characters Tyler has studied and transferred to paper are kept in his library of sketch pads. Every page is filled with bigger than life depictions of his amplified imagination. The young man explains: “Hard work and practicing with all types of tools help to enhance my drawings.” His inspiration comes from within. “Drawing is an escape for me. I get lost for hours on end, and it kills time,” he confessed. With an overflowing amount of talent, Tyler was asked if he
goes outside of his comfort zone of pencil and charcoal work, he answered, “Water color and acrylic are challenging to me because I can’t control the paint brush like I can a pencil.” At New Hampstead High School, Tyler is able to feed his talent and grow as an artist. He has taken art classes every year of his high school career and even earning college credits with Advance Placement (AP) courses that will prepare him next year. Art is not only his favorite subject, he excels in Social Studies, Language Arts, and Science as well. After graduation this year, Tyler plans to attend Savannah College of Art and Design, one of the art world’s most prestigious schools. He is determined to graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sequential Art. “I will work hard and graduate with honors,” the pencil whiz added. This degree of study will fine tune his natural talents of graphic storytelling and prepare him for his ultimate career. Following his college graduation, he has his eyes set on an internship at DC Comics, which is based in California and home to such legends as Batman, Superman and The Flash series. Tyler is also interested in the animated company, Pixar, which has been making films for than 25 years and have produced such classics as “Toy Story,” “Cars” and their newest movie, “The Good Dinosaur.” The graphic novel world has many legendary leaders for Tyler to follow in their footsteps. Brian Bollard and Alan Moore, for example, gave the most iconic image of Batman’s nemesis, The Joker. Along with Jack Kirby accompanied with Joe Simon, they created the all-time favorite characters of Captain America and the Hulk. Although he is young and has not found fame just yet, Tyler has had his work publically displayed. In October 2015, his work was shown at The Gallery on Washington at Savannah Art Academy. His projects also have been available for all to view in a local theater lobby, his high school and at the Savannah Mall. The artisan scholar has not sold any of his work professionally yet, but has produced a portrait of a child for a family member. A world awaits this young and very talented upcoming artist, whose talent is remarkable. His parents, Richard and Lisa, support his gift and his blueprint for his future. So don’t be surprised if, with every pencil stroke and eraser smudge, Pooler’s Tyler Cooler of Pooler becomes a name that the world will come to know and love.

POOLER RECREATION SPOTLIGHT
Bobby Bunch
B
obby Bunch has coached basketball for sixteen years. For the past decade, he has been a volunteer coach with the Pooler Recreation Department. He is currently working with the 10u division, because his son, Dalton, is a member on that team. “It’s sometimes hard to coach your own kid because you expect too much from them at times and also they sometimes tune you out because they hear your voice all the time,” Coach Bunch shared. Bobby started his coaching career in his mid-twenties; although he wasn’t able to completely commit because of his job required travel. It wasn’t until he decided to make Pooler his permanent home that he was able to give coaching his undivided attention. The father of three boys began coaching at the YMCA and then transferred to the Recreation Department when his sons were old enough to play there. As a child, Bobby participated in sports continuously with the utmost support of his Mom, Audrey. Always watching while he was being coached, his Mom would take him home and work with him on what he was supposed to learn. “She also believed in being honest with me about how I played. If I did well, she made sure I knew I did, but she wasn’t going to tell me how great I played if I stunk up the joint, she would tell me I was bad,” Bobby reminisced. “I think that is the problem today, nobody wants to tell the kids they didn’t play well, so they don’t know they need to get better. My philosophy is that you have to be honest and hard on the kids to make them better and get them ready for life. Because that is really why we want to put kids into sports so they can learn tools to help them as they grow up working like a team, learning how to lose and get back up, learning what it takes to win,
Story by CINDY BURBAGE Photos by MIRANDA OSBORN
such as hard work and attention to detail.” He said it’s also important to praise kids when they do well, and do it as passionately and strong as when they are wrong. “I like to give back,” the coach said noting times have changed and there’s a need for organized recreational sports for kids. “When we were kids, during the summers, we would all ride our bikes to the park after our parents left for work. We would play until we couldn’t anymore. But since that isn’t possible anymore, we need Rec Departments to have more leagues to keep the kids active and out of trouble. They can’t have this if they don’t have volunteers willing to coach. I get a lot out of coaching.” Teaching and mentoring the kids is one of the greatest rewards. When he is approached by and called “Coach,” by an older teenager, he knows he made an impact. “About a year ago, a kid I had coached a long time ago came to one of my games and came up to shake my hand and said ‘What’s up Coach.’ I didn’t recognize him because of how much he had changed,” Bobby said. “He proceeded to tell me that he was in the Army and about to leave for Ranger training and that I was a big reason for that. He said I was the first person to give him confidence that he could do something and also held him accountable for his mistakes.” Bobby also takes satisfaction when he sees players from his past teams play and do well in high school basketball. Although Bobby Bunch has given a lot of time and dedication to the YMCA and Rec Department, both have given him something back. In the Y’s case, something special happened when Bobby answered an advertisement for coaches and became an assistant coach.
“I like to give back; I get a lot out of coaching.”
Little did Bobby know that this position would change his life forever. The coach he ended up helping was the woman who would become his wife, Paige. How does a busy man find time to pour his heart and soul into kids to make a difference? Bobby said he makes the time. “I have always been lucky. I have either ran my own company or like now I run the concrete and masonry division of Griffin
P
Contracting. So even though I work more hours than most people, I can control my hours more than most people to make coaching possible,” he said. “Plus most people can make time for what they want to do like playing golf or bowling. I enjoy coaching basketball. It’s one of the few things I am passionate about so I make time for it.”

athnasium is a math learning center, where math is taught in a way that makes sense. The Mathnasium Method helps kids learn math in a way they understand it and enhances their love of life. We have this service right here at our fingertips. Aileen Clarkson owns Mathnasium of Pooler. Her other locations are in Savannah, Whitemarsh Island and Bluffton, SC. Since March 2015, Mathnasium of Pooler has provided math tutoring and homework help to students in the Savannah and Effingham school districts. The Mathnasium of Pooler staff is passionate about helping kids gain stronger math skills through our year-round and summer-only programs, and to get ready for college. Aileen compares coming to the learning center like going to a gym. But instead of pumping up their muscles, her young clients are intent on beefing up their brains — by honing their skills in mathematics and acquiring what Aileen calls “number sense.” The Mathnasium franchise, located between Publix and Seasons of Japan on Pooler Parkway, serves kindergarten through 12th-graders in an after-school setting conducive to making math understandable and enjoyable. “Children don’t hate math,” said Aileen, a native of Scotland who holds an Honors Degree in Mathematics for Business Analysis from Glasgow College, “They hate being confused by math. Once they start understanding it, they love it.” In the process of promoting that understanding, Aileen starts by doing an assessment of a student’s abilities in math and determining any gaps in the student’s mathematical development. Based on that, a learning plan is designed, and prescriptive work is assigned. Mathnasium of Pooler takes pride in the attention they give their students, allowing individual instruction in a small-group setting with one teacher to no more than four students. The instructor explains math concepts, and the students respond by completing worksheets and playing math-related games. “We use lots of games,” said Aileen, “and the worksheets are fun.” The instruction is aimed, she said, at “inspiring a love for math and numbers” with the goal of making the students “problem solvers” and “building confidence” in their mathematical abilities. The Mathnasium Method isn’t a radical approach to learning; it’s intended, she said, to supplement what students are experiencing in the classroom and is “totally in line with the private and public school curriculum.” Just like “going to a gym,” students attend Mathnasium at their own convenience. “You pay a set fee once a month and you have access to 3 hours of instruction per week. Sessions are drop-in, no appointments are necessary.” she says “so you can fit us in around your other activities”. With hours from 2:30 to 7:00 pm Monday through Thursday, 10:00 to 2:00 pm on Saturdays and 12:00 to 3:00 on Sundays, Mathnasium makes it easy for their students to make time for their learning. “We encourage them to come three times a week for an hour or twice a week for 90 minutes.” adds Aileen. Their specially trained math instructors will teach your child how to understand math in an individual setting. This unique approach enables them to effectively explain math concepts well and lend a helping hand to every student. Their tutors foster a caring, encouraging environment that helps kids thrive and learn. Mathnasium of Pooler also provides help to students preparing to take standardized tests such as SAT and ACT. Mathnasium instructors use a unique assessment process to
determine exactly what each child knows and what they need to learn. Next, they design a customized learning plan for teaching the concepts the student needs to master. Next, the instructors check progress along the way to make sure kids truly understand and retain the concepts they have been taught. The results are amazing. Kids will see measurable changes in attitude, confidence and school progress. The instructors will also set aside time to provide homework help. They will help kids understand their homework assignments so they feel better prepared to complete the work at school. The Mathnasium program provides the foundation and support for students to succeed at each stage. Elementary school students build their math foundation, mastering computation and problem solving with whole and rational numbers, and understanding number sense. Mathnasium even makes learning times tables fun. Students in middle school continue to build strong math foundation, mastering “the how and why” (algebra readiness), helping with homework, and filling in gaps needed for advanced classes. And the high School students fill in their foundational gaps, addressing different levels of knowledge from Algebra through Calculus, helping with test preparation and assisting with homework. Mathnasium of Pooler’s goal is to enhance your child’s math skills, understanding of math concepts and overall school performance. At the same time, they build confidence and help families see measurable progress. Their program provides consistency and flexibility. Mathnasium of Pooler also offers summer programs, private tutoring and free consultation. They are currently accepting enrollment applications for their summer programs. Mathnasium’s fun summer programs are all about preventing summer learning loss and helping students prepare for what lies ahead. For some, that may mean a solid review of previous material, while others will benefit from previewing upcoming concepts. Most students will get some of both. Summer programs allow you to set your own flexible schedule. You will use 15 to 24 hours anytime that suits you. Drop in on whatever days you choose. You can spread your visits throughout the summer of use them all in two weeks. This flexibility allows you to keep your summer vacation times open for family trips. We work around you. Aileen researched education franchises for over two years and realized the Mathnasium method matched her own way of teaching perfectly. She is excited to bring Mathnasium to Pooler, and to partner with the local schools to build strong math students by “making math make sense”. Mathnasium of Pooler serves students from Pooler, Rincon, Guyton, Port Wentworth, Bloomingdale and surrounding areas. For more information on Mathnasium of Pooler and a schedule of fees, contact Aileen Clarkson at (912) 330-0666 or email her at pooler@mathnasium.com. Their website is www.mathnasium. com. Mo’bay Island Cuisine:
A Taste of the Islands in Your Own Backyard
T
Story by KATRICE WILLIAMS
he restaurant Mo’Bay Island Cuisine is relatively new to the Pooler community, opening its doors in December. Mo’Bay’s owner and founder, Michael Slade, a Milwaukee native, takes a great deal of pride in the quality of food and service that customers receive. Michael’s wife Sandra and his chef Elvis are also very committed to incorporating high culinary standards for their customers. Sandra and Chef Elvis are both from Montego Bay, Jamaica, hence the name “Mo’Bay.” The three entrepreneurs had aspirations to open up a restaurant for quite some time. The team sought to enter a market that would benefit from what they had to offer—an authentic, fresh taste of the Caribbean where product quality would not be compromised. They soon realized that Pooler was just the place for that to happen—great location, great size and great growth. Sandra and Chef Elvis both have plenty of restaurant experience. Much of Sandra’s restaurant-related expertise comes from Jamaica, and she has long been gifted in the arena of Caribbean cuisine. Moreover, Chef Elvis has been preparing delectable dishes since age 16. The chef is a valuable asset to the team as he has tremendous culinary experience stemming from areas all over the world. Chef Elvis has cooked on Russian ships, prepared Asian delicacies in China and has even cooked for the Prime Minister of

Photos by LUKE SMITH his native land. The chef is experienced in Caribbean, American, Chinese and Italian cuisines, to name a few. Michael and his team strive to set Mo’Bay apart from others in the industry. “It’s others that claim to be Caribbean, but we use all authentic spices…natural herbs and spices from Jamaica. Also, my chef is a real expert and has been all over the world,” Michael said. Michael knows that one of the most important things to most customers is the quality of the food that they receive. Food that is subpar at best is not acceptable, and he understands that the staff must work hard to prevent such issues. Michael wants to make sure that customers “get quality and make sure that everything is consistent to taste.” “Make sure that you’re watching your line. Make sure nothing gets old. Make sure it’s fresh and that it’s consistent,” Michael insists. Most people would say they like to feel satisfied after a meal without being compelled to pick up a snack in order to satisfy lingering feelings of hunger. Michael is confident that Mo’Bay’s portion sizes should be pleasing to most customers. “If you compare us to any other Caribbean restaurant, you’ll see we are a lot more generous,” he said. The team at Mo’Bay knows that customer satisfaction starts as

the customer first walks through the door, and Michael feels that a pleasant and welcoming attitude is of dire importance. He feels that it is all about “the way you treat the customer…the way you respond to them.” The team at Mo’Bay knows that each individual has different likes and preferences, so Chef Elvis takes pride in preparing the meals according to customer preference in order to cater to a variety of taste buds. “He can make it mild; he can make it hot. Tell him how you want it, and he’ll make it,” Sandra says. Sandra wants to clear up the misconception that some people have of Jamaican food—thinking that it is all tremendously spicy. In fact, some may think that the spice will leave little room to enjoy the actual taste of the dish. Concerning this, Sandra comments, “Once they hear Jamaican, they think it’s all about spice— it’s not. It’s not just spice and no flavor.” Mo’Bay has a variety of menu items that customers can choose from, both Caribbean and American. Some of the entrees are: jerk chicken and jerk pork, curry chicken and curry goat, brown stew chicken, fried chicken, stew beef, pot roast, pepper steak and oxtails, just to cover a few. For a lighter appetite, jerk burgers with some tempting toppings and jerk chili is also on the menu. There are a host of other dishes and side items, including plantain, rice with beans, island slaw, steamed cabbage, green beans, white rice, french fries and jerk chicken or pork topped salad. A variety of both Caribbean and American drinks are also available.
Chef Elvis comments on a few other popular items, saying, “We have a nice pineapple relish. It’s very good—made from scratch with fresh pineapple. Then, I have a delicious island slaw; it’s fresh and nice. Everybody is raving about the coconut honey-glazed bread pudding.” The chef also mentions their homemade potato salad and their tropical fruit punch that’s made with fresh fruit. He proudly declares, “Everything is made fresh every day.” He jokes as he is careful not to reveal the complete recipe for his dishes. He smiles and says that his jerk chicken seasoning is made with 17 different ingredients without being too specific. Regarding their homemade jerk seasoning, Michael notes, “That’s the thing that opened the door here—the jerk.” Customers can choose to dine in or carry-out orders. Interestingly enough, Mo’Bay also offers full service catering. Michael explains that customers can have their items conveniently delivered to their location. If desired, Mobay will have the food served for events or customers may choose to have a buffet-style catering event. Looking ahead, Michael says, “The goal is to grow, and eventually open more locations.” Mo’Bay Island Cuisine surely plans to make a noteworthy mark in the area by giving customers a little taste of the islands. As Sandra confidently asserts, “Try it and you’ll see why we’re different than everybody else.” www.PoolerMagazine.com | March/April 2016
