Gabrielle D’Alessandro Bent Not Broken, Raising Scoliosis Awareness

I

Story by KRISTIE CARPENTER Photos by NATALIE MCALLISTER

n today’s world, being a 17-year old girl can be difficult, but one Pooler teen is proving that nothing is going to hold her back from making a difference in the world. If you look at Gabrielle D’Alessandro, you see a beautiful, modest and humble young lady. When you talk to her, you hear the voice of an intelligent, motivated, ambitious, generous young lady who is mature beyond her years. D’Alessandro is 17 years old and a junior at Calvary Day School. She is the daughter of Victor D’Alessandro and Dr. Karen Fehr -D’Alessandro, OB-GYN. She has a twin brother named Garrett. The family has lived in Pooler for 8 years. Like many high school girls, she is a cheerleader and active in many extracurricular activities, but she suffers from scoliosis and is working to raise awareness and gain support for this misunderstood condition. It’s not just the scoliosis that sets D’Alessandro apart from most teen girls. She is well rounded and driven. Since first grade, she has been a cheerleader with Cheer Savannah and competed last month in the Worlds Competition in Orlando. She has been playing the violin since she was in 5th grade. She participated in the Armstrong Youth Orchestra and worked her way from the lowest to the highest group and volunteered to help younger children there as well. She is an avid golfer and won regional awards for her school. She is a member of the Teen Board at Memorial Hospital, a group that helps young people learn leadership and volunteerism skills. She also volunteers with the animal rescue group One Love. Despite her devotion to these activities and more, she still has time to work toward making scoliosis research and support a priority and now has a platform that helps her. In February, D’Alessandro won the title Miss Flint River Outstanding Teen. The pageant is part of the Miss America

10 May/June 2016 | www.PoolerMagazine.com

Outstanding Teen Pageant. Savannah doesn’t host a teen pageant in the Miss America Teen system, but the pageant in Flint River was open to any Georgia teen. D’Alessandro competed in fitness, talent, evening gown and interview. She won first place in fitness and talent and went on to be crowned the overall winner. Now, as she prepares to compete in June in the Miss Georgia Outstanding Teen pageant, her platform is Bent Not Broken, Raising Scoliosis Awareness. D’Alessandro was first diagnosed with scoliosis in the 7th grade through a school screening. When she received the diagnosis she said, “ I didn’t know anything about it. I was more confused than anything.” This is why she is determined to raise awareness about scoliosis because she wants other girls to be screened, and if diagnosed, to understand what challenges they could face. Three percent of girls between the ages of 10 and 18 are diagnosed with scoliosis. Most receive the diagnosis through school screenings, but in recent years many states have rescinded the screenings. Georgia is one of 22 who still perform the screenings. If the screening finds that a girl may have scoliosis, she is referred to an orthopedic doctor who will perform an x-ray. The doctor defines the curvature of the spine. When D’Alessandro received her initial diagnosis her curvature was 25 degrees. The doctor told her since she was pretty much done growing she did not need to wear a brace. The curvature has progressed and now measures 43 degrees, which is too advanced for a brace and not advanced enough for surgery. She is in a holding pattern as she waits for medical advancements. One of the misconceptions about scoliosis is that it doesn’t cause pain, but that is not the case for D’Alessandro. She lives in pain. She says many of the cheerleading activities and stunts she used to be able to do are no longer possible. Sitting in a school

desk all day is hard for her. She no longer carries a backpack. The misconceptions about scoliosis are a driving force in her reason for choosing it as her platform and doing the work she is to raise awareness. D’Alessandro says, “There is little to no research about scoliosis and there is definitely a need to know more about it.” One of the first things D’Alessandro has done to raise awareness is start a Curvy Girls Scoliosis chapter here in the Savannah area. Curvy Girls is an international organization that lends support in hopes of reducing the emotional impact of scoliosis and empower girls to become leaders, make healthy lifestyle choices and improve self-esteem. D’Alessandro says, “I have felt self conscious, and as girls we have so much to deal with, so that is why I started the chapter here, to help other girls like me.” As mentioned earlier, Georgia is only one of 22 states that still mandate scoliosis screenings through schools. D’Alessandro has already spoken to middle school students at Calvary Day School and is trying to work with the public schools to make students aware of Curvy Girls. so they don’t feel alone in their challenges. Her ultimate goal is to get every state to pass a law mandating school screenings. She uses Georgia as an example of what needs to be done around the country. Georgia also recognizes June as Scoliosis Awareness month, but most other states do not. She is also working toward ensuring that all states recognize it.

12 May/June 2016 | www.PoolerMagazine.com

In addition to raising awareness, D’Alessandro is fundraising to help aid research. May 21st she will host a Tea Party at Savannah Quarters Country Club from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Tickets will cost $15 and all of the proceeds will benefit the Scoliosis Research Society. If you are interested in attending, contact D’Alessandro at gabrielle1113@hotmail.com. She is planning a Glow Run in June and will donate all of the proceeds to the National Scoliosis Foundation. While the Miss Flint River Outstanding Teen Pageant gave her a platform to raise awareness and gain support for scoliosis, she does not intend to stop working towards learning more about the condition and helping others who suffer from it. She plans to study biomedical research when she goes to college. She wants to become an orthopedic surgeon and focus her efforts on scoliosis research. In November, she will begin sending out applications to colleges. Her first choice is Wellesley College in Massachusetts, but she has a list of 10 other colleges if Wellesley doesn’t work out, including John Hopkins University in Baltimore. D’Alessandro sets an example that could benefit many teens in today’s world. She is overcoming challenges and using them for the greater good. Her mother, Dr. Fehr-D’Alessandro says, “She is driven and going to go somewhere in life. She is going to make great contributions to this world. “

Pooler’s Growth No Accident Story by JEFF WHITTEN Photos by JEFF WHITTEN and provided by The City of Pooler

F

“A society grows great when old men plant trees whose

ew people are indifferent on growth, especially when it happens in their back yard or to their community. Perhaps that’s because growth is almost always a mixed bag. It provides jobs and shopping and dining opportunities at the same time it congests roads so that a trip across town that once took five minutes to make can suddenly take 15 minutes or more when traffic is heavy. Folks who live in quiet neighborhoods can find themselves just down the street from strip malls and more traffic; but at the same time, those who once had to drive into Savannah to see a doctor can now do so close to home. The city’s always superb recreation department is now able to offer residents more opportunities to play, thanks to the opening of a sterling new complex off the parkway and the building of a stadium that rivals - and in some cases is better than - many area high school stadiums. While some may bemoan the traffic or wish for days when there were fewer lines to stand in, for many, Pooler’s growth is a good thing, bringing economic opportunity while allowing more

16 May/June 2016 | www.PoolerMagazine.com

residents to work in the city in which they live. It has added diversity to Georgia while also giving residents more to do without going somewhere else. It has meant senior citizens can find medical care at home rather than having to go into Savannah. As for why Pooler has grown, that’s largely due to planning of city leaders past and present as well as the municipality’s location outside Savannah on I-95. Add in the completion of the Pooler Parkway and its connection from one end to the other, Gulfstream’s expansion and the Port of Savannah’s increased importance as one of the nation’s top ports have all played a role in the city’s increase in population from about 6,000 people in 2000 to more than 23,000 at present. That’s also no surprise. Prior to the recession in 2007, developers were building anywhere from 400 to 600 homes a year, and those homes were selling like hotcakes. And where people go, those who offer commercial opportunities usually follow. As its population swelled, Pooler has added restaurants, movie theaters, fun parks, stores, you name it and the city probably has it.

shade they know they shall never sit in.” - Greek Proverb But the increase in population also means an increase in the number of people it takes to run a city, and protect it. Pooler officials knew years ago they would outgrow the current city hall, which was dedicated in 1988. Work began in earnest last year on a new municipal complex, which when complete later this year will be one of the biggest projects in the city’s 100-plus year history and one that proponents hope will spur revitalization in its historic downtown area. It’s more than that, however; It’s a nod to the future, a city hall that Mayor Mike Lamb believes will still be in use 100 years from now, anchoring a downtown that retains its ties to the past while celebrating the present and giving future Pooler residents something of which to be proud. Recently, a writer with Pooler Magazine sat down with Lamb in his office in the city’s current city hall to get his take on his city’s growth. Lamb, who was born and raised in West Chatham, married a local girl named Diane and they moved to Pooler for good in 1977. It seems few people care more about the well being

of both the city and its residents than the popular, plainspoken and friendly Lamb, who has been re-elected as mayor four times after first winning election as a city councilman. Pooler Magazine: When did growth really start taking off in Pooler? Mike Lamb: When the Pooler Parkway was built everybody started looking at Pooler, but in 2004 when the north and south end of the Pooler Parkway were connected, that’s when things really started to click. Before then we had a Home Depot, we had a Wal Mart and one or two other thing on the Parkway, but not much. When we connected those two roads from Highway 80 over to Pine Barren, that’s when it seemed like we turned a corner and the ribbon cuttings started coming one after the other. It was unbelievable how many people wanted to local in Pooler. PM: When did it become apparent that there was a need for a new municipal complex? www.PoolerMagazine.com | May/June 2016

17

ML: We’ve been talking about the police department needing an area to grow into for a long time. About 7 or 8 years ago we started talking about getting a new municipal building in the future and we started working towards that. Initially we looked at building two buildings, one for city hall, one for the police department. That was too cost prohibitive. So we decided we’ll give the whole bottom floor of the new city hall to the police department, which centralizes us again. This city has had so much growth coming here, we’ve seen our personnel grow. You go back to the year 2000 we only had about 50 or 60 people working for the city, maybe less. Now we have 150-plus, with approximately 45 police and 45 firefighters in four stations. “ PM: When is the project supposed to be complete and what’s a ball park on the cost, which has been reported at $18 million? ML: I’d say an approximate date on the completion is this fall, or at least by the end of the year. As for cost, I’d really hate to put a price tag on it until it’s finished and then we can say this is what it cost. We’ve had great staffs and councils over the years and we’ve budgeted for this, and at the same time maintain a millage rate that’s actually dropped over the last few years. I like to say we’re

18 May/June 2016 | www.PoolerMagazine.com

watching our money and still trying to give the citizens of Pooler something to be proud of, and something we can use to revitalize historic Pooler. We’re hoping to start from here, with this block, and build out, to give more to citizens living here in historic Pooler. Maybe try to give it a look that rolls back the clock a little bit. This is going to be a 100-year-plus building, and it will be a very viable and good working city hall for our city, and it will be a central point for all Pooler. PM: What’s been the reaction to the city’s growth? ML: Most people wanted these businesses to come in, the biggest thing is traffic. Some people say don’t let the city grow, but one of the things you learn fast in government is you cannot deny someone the right to develop their property just because you don’t want to grow, or you might wind up in court. So what you do is you work with property owners and developers the best you can to make it fit your city the best it can. You try to work with everyone as best you can. PM: What’s been most difficult for you as mayor in addressing growth? Traffic?

ML: One thing about traffic is it’s not just your city. It’s also being a thoroughfare. Look at tags throughout the week, and you’ll see they’re from Effingham, Bryan and so on, right on up to Bulloch County, all going east. And then in the afternoon it’s the same thing in reverse, and now we’ve also become a destination, and that has created some jobs. But all that has created traffic, and we’re working on this, both us and the airport are working on it with new lights. But when you start growing, traffic is going to be there and it’s never going to be like it was 30 years ago. You have to plan for it.

Helping Children Reach Their

FULLEST POTENTIAL

PM: What’s been toughest for you personally to deal with? ML: Probably the hardest thing is we don’t just have people moving here to live here, we also have people who want to come out here and build businesses, and we welcome both, but it can be hard making sure you don’t do something that hurts people already living here or those who want to bring their businesses here. PM: A number of small communities in the Coastal Empire saw a great deal of residential construction prior to the recession, including Pooler. Do you think your city will ever get back to that level of housing construction? ML: I don’t know if we’ll ever get to that level again. We were having new subdivisions start up and build out, and then add phases. Most of those have built out to capacity, or close to it. So do I think we’ll have another boom, no I don’t. There’s not that much more housing area ... I think there’s still plenty of growth coming. And I welcome anyone who wants to move out here. We want to share the good life we feel we have here in Pooler. PM: What other projects are in the works in Pooler? ML: We’ve got some land for additional parking for the new courthouse and we’re going to build a new parking lot at the recreation department, beyond that, we’ll probalby build another fire station on Jimmy Deloach and that will probably happen pretty soon. PM: What are you proudest of as a mayor? ML: When my mother moved in with us, she said ‘y’all got a problem, you don’t have any doctors out here,’ I wasn’t even in office then, but I started talking to doctors and told them they need to move out to Pooler and asking what it would take. So I’m proud of people finally paying attention to this city and saying it’s a place where you want to bring that kind of service. It’s good for our citizens, especially our senior citizens. I’m also very proud of the council and our staff, because right after I took office in 2004 we were looking at a park over there completely wooded, and we came together and built that recreation park. I’m also proud there’s no dissension. This council, and those before it, we’ve always wanted to work together. PM: Has that always easy, given the city’s rapid growth? ML: Growth is always a very difficult thing. I haven’t agreed with everything we’ve done, but I support everything we’ve done, and I don’t want it to sound like I differ with council, because that’s not it. We are are almost completely unified when we do things. My number one thing, and the council’s number one thing, is to look after the citizens of Pooler first, and give them a nice safe place to live. This council, and those before it, have always wanted to work together. I’m proudest of how they’ve done that.

Esteban’s Hat

Local Band Mixing Music and Fun Story by KATRICE WILLIAMS Photos by NATALIE MCALLISTER

M

usic is the universal language that can speak to the innermost part of the soul. It can cheer up the gloomiest day or rush in with tons of memories from good days past. Listening to the sound is only part of that conversation, possessing the talent to perform the sound is the entire dialogue. Local Pooler band Esteban’s Hat has been soothing souls and creating memories for others for almost three years, and band members Craig Brewer, Troy Brown, Garrett Coleman, Darren Harrison and Ashton Milliken have a lifetime of musical experience. The name Esteban’s Hat is not your average run of the mill band name, and one is curious - how did they come up with that? As laughter filled the room during a recent get together, Craig jokingly explained, “All the good names were taken. No, we made a list of thirty names, and we decided rather than having the perfect name, we just needed a name to get out there. We got to looking at these really famous bands that have these ridiculous non-sense names. So with our list of thirty names, we narrowed it down to twelve and we tallied it up to go with the most popular.” Does the name have a meaning? Yes, it does. “Have you ever seen on QVC, the guy that wears all black and plays guitar with his fingernails?” Craig asked, then answered his question, “Well that’s Esteban. We figured his name was probably copyrighted, so we said how about his hat. I have actually went on EBay and found a leather flat bill style hat that was one of Esteban’s hats, and he autographed the hat box. So we have an original Esteban hat, for whatever that’s worth. During concerts, we will take the hat out along with a couple of other silly hats and pass them out to the crowd. www.PoolerMagazine.com | May/June 2016

As the crowd is dancing, they will wear them and pass them around, it’s fun!” The band’s beginnings are as laid back as the name. In April 2013, longtime friends and musicians, Craig and Troy started putting this talented band together. Having played together as a Worship Team at church, they knew right where to commence. Garrett and Darren joined them and the band began building a song list. A few short months later in July, Esteban’s Hat made its first appearance at a pool party in Troy’s neighborhood. After their debut, the group began searching for club gigs. In the beginning, finding places to play was a challenge because no one had heard of them. “Once a couple of clubs let us play, then the word got out, and it became easy to book after that,” Craig said. “We now have a website that has audio, video, pictures and testimonials of people we have played for. So we have all that on our website, which makes it easy when we hand out our business cards or just a web address. They can check us out onestebanshat.com.” Of course, musical talent like this usually doesn’t develop overnight. This artistic group’s craft dates back to their youth. Newest member Ashton holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music. “I gigged in college. I’m originally from North Carolina, so after I graduated, I was teaching music fulltime. I was gigging almost every weekend; I was playing regional symphonies. I was playing for a rock band where we opened for ZZ Top and Styx, plus I was doing free-lance stuff for theater musicals. This is pretty much all I know. It was fun, but not enough to make a living on. I decided I wanted to play for a living instead of teaching, so I joined the Army. I can still play and have a steady paycheck,” the drummer defined. Troy holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music as well. His musical stirring occurred in elementary school with the learning of the saxophone. “I started on the sax, got braces and wasn’t able to play anymore, so I got a guitar and have been playing ever since. I played in the clubs in high school and Young Country was the first band I played in,” the savvy guitarist said. With his Bachelor’s degree in Music, vocalist Darrin Harrison began his musical findings in his later teenage years. “My Dad wanted me to play Bluegrass, and so he got me a gui-

tar. I was always a singer and so I never really learned the bluegrass licks but I learned to sing. I would just play chords and sing. That’s how I got started,” he said. Darrin began to sing at his church, Pooler First Baptist, where he was a choir member for many years. “The choir director, told me I may have a talent to lead music and encouraged me to attend Armstrong, enroll in music. This is where I got my formal training started, going through their music program. While I was there, we started a band called 8 Mile Bend.” Craig Brewer put down the trumpet he played in his high school marching band and decided to go the path of bass guitar. He too plays with his worship team at Savannah Christian with Ashton. The guitarist also was a member of the band 8 Mile Bend along with his other musical companions. And last but certainly not least, there is Garrett, another lead vocalist for the group. Garrett has played the drums since grade school and joined the Christian band Zero Hour in 1985, having played with them for ten years. Before joining Esteban’s Hat, Garrett shared, “I haven’t done anything musically for quite a while, just playing with my church.” Also on his resume is being the face of Fox Kids here locally when he was a youth. Making sweet music has become a release and is all fun for the members. “We all get along and we are truly blessed,” Craig shared. “It’s nice to just hang out and put smiles on people’s faces as we do it,” Ashton said. According to Troy, “This is the first band I’ve ever been in that it is fun. Even if we have a bad night, it’s still a good time.” Esteban’s Hat is a cover band that has been stamping its name on the club scene for the past three years, and its song list includes rock, funk, jazz, new and old country. Although they have not been playing too many clubs lately, they have been keeping busy with weddings and private events. This fun and light hearted group of musicians are like a bowl of mixed fruit. Separately, they are different, with unique backgrounds; however when they are thrown together, it’s a perfect mix. And to think it all started with a simple little black bolero hat.

Bill Cunningham M Making It Count POOLER RECREATION SPOTLIGHT

Story by CINDY BURBAGE Photos by LUKE SMITH

ost will agree that there is a priceless fulfillment in touching the lives of children in a positive way. Bill Cunningham, a volunteer baseball coach for the Pooler Recreation Department, knows the value of this. Bill, a North Carolina native, has lived in Pooler for most of his life. He, along with his wife Elena, have encouraged their two children, nine-year-old Billy and seven-yearold Brianna, to enjoy sports and activities in order to stay healthy and active. Being the type of role model that’s needed to mentor children should definitely be a familiar concept to Bill, since he has been part of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department for about 25 years and is presently a lieutenant. Bill has coached baseball for the Pooler Recreation Department for a couple of seasons. He coached the 8 and under league (8U) last year; he is currently coaching The Warriors, the 10 and under team (10U) that his son Billy plays for. Interestingly enough, Bill’s daughter Brianna attends dance class and has also participated in gymnastics, which are both offered by the department. She aspires to soon participate in cheerleading now that she is seven. Bill really enjoys baseball, a sport he participated in all throughout his childhood. He even played during his first year at Winston Salem State University. Obviously, he has a lot of experience on the field. “I love baseball. I’ve played baseball all of my life. My father coached me before high school. I wanted to coach him [Billy]. I played baseball all the way to college,” Bill states. Bill wants the kids to really get the most out of the game. He wants them to learn as much as possible and have fun the whole way through. He says that he wants to “teach them how to play baseball, so that they can develop a love for the game.” He feels it’s important that he “teach the young men about teamwork--how to depend on each other and encourage each other to do the best that they can do.” “Like schoolwork, it’s about practicing and reaching a goal. To become a better player, they have to put in the time and the effort and the work. At the end of the season, when they look back, they’ll see that they have improved,” he remarks. Bill later declares, “The object is to make them better than they were whenever they came and to give them an understanding of the game.” Bill does strive to better his athletes so that they will continuously improve and build on their skills. Whether batting, throwing or catching, he wants them to reach their full potential. Bill feels that majority of the kids are truly excited about playing the game of baseball and really want to learn in order to get better at it. He mentions, “Most of the kids who play baseball are in it because they want to play baseball.” Bill does not take coaching lightly. He understands the great value in what he is doing, especially when thinking of his own childhood and the

moments he shared with his dad playing the game. Bill embraces the priceless moments he is afforded with his son—times shared that his son can see “dad” in another light. “When I look back, I enjoyed the time I spent with my father. This is something he [Billy] will carry with him throughout life. When he has kids, maybe he, too, will want to coach them,” he says. Most adults who have spent time around children agree that they can be great teachers. They are often the most sincere of all. Consequently, Bill appreciates how genuine the kids can often be when it comes to the game. “They keep it real from the standpoint that it’s about fun. It is supposed to be about fun. To fall in love with the game, you have to have fun. We try to teach but want to make sure they clown around and be a kid and have fun,” Bill says. Bill is grateful for all that the Pooler Recreation Department does for the kids. He feels that Jeremy Greene, Athletic Director, along with the overall department does a lot to enhance the lives of children through the various sports and activities that are offered. Regarding this, Bill comments, “I think that Jeremy and his staff here have done an outstanding job. He’s got a good program, good fields and good equipment. He works with us when we need something.” Besides coaching, Bill also enjoys fishing and golfing. In fact, he has a boat; however, he admits that he hasn’t taken it out in a long time, due to a relatively busy schedule. Bill Cunningham wants to make a lasting impression in the lives of the children that he coaches. He, along with the Pooler Recreation Department, is striving to do a lot of good in the lives of many young people. “As long as I can help the kids, I would like to be a part of it,” he states.

Diane Kahn and Lovin’ Spoons:

Creating a Flavorful Fro-Yo Phenomenon

F

Story by KATRICE WILLIAMS

rozen yogurt, or fro-yo, has been many individuals’ treat of choice for some time now. Few understand that more than Diane Kahn. Diane, a Chicago native, has lived in the area for about 33 years, along with her husband David, who is originally from Savannah. The couple has two daughters and one son. Upon coming to the area, Diane began her professional career as a marketing executive and has noteworthy experience in radio/ television marketing and media sales. Interestingly enough, in 1989, Diane launched Travelhost Magazine, an area visitor’s guide. The magazine was successfully published for 20 years prior to Diane making the decision to sell it before moving from the area. Diane and her family relocated to California as her husband David pursued career interests. The family’s California stay lasted only one year, especially since there was some ever-present homesickness. However, it proved to be a tremendously valuable experience, since it was there that Diane thought of the great selfserve fro-yo idea for customers back home. Actually, while in California, Diane noticed that there was a self-serve frozen yogurt shop on “almost every corner.” After visiting several of the shops, she saw that business was booming, and she knew that there was nothing similar in Savannah or the surrounding areas. Diane had a vision that soon became a reality. Hence, prior to leaving California, Diane created the Lovin’ Spoons Brand, including the look and logo. She even began long-distance negotiating for store leases. After Diane and her family returned to the local area, she enlisted the assistance of an Atlanta-based ad agency. With their help, along with the exten-

sive research and development of industry experts, Diane’s vision came to life. Diane had long known what she wanted in a fro-yo store—“a one-of-a-kind clean environment” with “world-class customer service” and a premium product line. In November 2010, Diane opened her Lovin’ Spoons Store in Savannah; she opened the Pooler store six weeks later. The stores incorporated the 70’s style ice-cream parlor theme and vibe appealing to customers of all ages, who enjoy their fro-yo as they relax to the sounds of 70’s tunes being played in the background, while their pictures often appear on a big screen monitor. There are even models of Volkswagen Beetles inside each store. “We created this vibe with the 70’s theme that is entirely unique to Lovin’ Spoons. We always play 70’s music. The whole look is that comfortable, vintage, bright, cheery, happy feeling of the 70’s,” Diane says. She later adds, “It’s not just getting a frozen yogurt; it’s an experience. It’s a lot of fun.” Diane wanted to ensure that all managers and staff would always maintain a clean store environment for customers. She states, “Cleanliness is crucial when you have a self-serve concept. Every customer that walks in needs to feel like we just opened. It needs to be that clean, like nobody has been there yet-our brand is about being really clean and keeping a high quality product.” A quality product is offered indeed. 12 ever-changing fro-yo flavors are available each day out of the over 70 total flavors, which are sure to tempt almost any palate. Some flavors include: Apple Pie, Cake Batter, Caramel, Chocolate Classic, Cinnamon Roll, Coffee, Cotton Candy, Country Vanilla, Fudge Brownie Batter, Georgia Peach, Hawaiian Pineapple, Maple Bacon Doughnut, New

York Cheesecake, Peanut Butter, Pistachio, Pecan Praline, Red Velvet Cake, Salted Caramel Popcorn and Very Strawberry. If that’s not enough, Lovin’ Spoons also has milkshakes and smoothies on the menu made just how the customer wants, offering customers a nice alternative. Fro-yo can feel a little lonely without the company of a variety of delectable toppings. There are over 40 to choose from, including Brownie Pieces, Cheesecake Bites, Chocolate Chips, Cookie Dough Bites, Oreo Pieces, Maraschino Cherries, Peanut Butter Chips and Rainbow Sprinkles just to name a few. Additionally, a host of candies, cookies and cereals are available to top off the fro-yo. Customers can also enjoy fresh fruit toppings like Bananas, Blueberries, Blackberries, Kiwi, Mandarin Oranges, Mango, Peaches, Pineapples, Raspberries and Strawberries. Furthermore, some very delectable syrups are accessible. Butterscotch, Chocolate, Hot Caramel, Hot Fudge, Hot Peanut Butter and Raspberry Syrups are surely some fan favorites. Customers are free to visit www.lovinspoons.com to see the full product line. Sugar-free, dairy-free and fat-free fro-yo is available daily. Actually, majority of the yogurt flavors are fat free, while others only have between 4-8 grams of total fat per 4 ounces. Veritably, a variety of gelato and sorbet flavors are offered. Many individuals don’t know that Fro-Yo-To-Go Packs can be ordered. These fro-yo packs are great for almost any occasion-class parties, office meetings or even just at home fun. Customers can customize orders for almost any catered event as well. The Lovin’ Spoons Staff will make sure that all the orders are properly packaged on dry ice and intact whether they’re delivered or picked up. In-store parties can also be arranged. Concerning this, Diane remarks, “We can do it; people just need to know that it’s not difficult. We do it off premises all the time. We have parties at our stores too.” Diane is quick to give a great deal of credit to her staff, and she appreciates their hard work; she knows that they’re a big factor in the success of Lovin’ Spoons. “I feel like we have the greatest employees; and the managers… they really are devoted to making sure that every day the store looks fantastic and is only serving the best possible product,” she asserts. Diane is anticipating a bright future for Lovin’ Spoons. She feels very fortunate that the stores are doing exceptionally well. She plans to remain committed to the principles and practices that have proved to be undeniably beneficial over the years…a commitment to all-around quality products and services for her customers. “Without our customers, we’re nothing,” she insists.

We have always found your prices to be competitive and when you didn’t have our item you have been very helpful in finding it. But, more than that, it is the service after the sale which has been rendered promptly and at a reason-

able cost. These are the reasons we will continue to shop with you.” - Carleen and Bill Fillingim “I shop at Wiley’s Home Center because I am treated like I am the most important customer. The staff continues to give quality customer service and is willing to assist you in whatever way necessary. With reasonable prices and always a great customer experience, Effingham County knows they can count on this hometown store. At Wiley’s Home Center, they understand the need of great customer service and the need of trust with loyalty. Whether it is a new customer or a repeat one, everyone is treated like family. Clarifying VA Loan Misconceptions

I

need a 620 credit score. “Actually, customers with a minimum credit score of 530 may qualify when considering other compensating factors such as payment history and debt-toincome ratio,” says Ivy Eilerman, Senior Mortgage Loan Originator for First Guaranty Mortgage Corporation. It’s tough to get a VA loan. VA loans offer flexibility and are forgiving for customers who have experienced a bankruptcy or foreclosure. Lenders usually want customers to wait two years to apply for a loan after a foreclosure or Chapter 7 bankruptcy. “Though VA loans are flexible, customers should work to improve their credit scores, payment history or employment status while waiting to apply,” says Eilerman. I need a large down payment. The flexibility of the VA loan may allow borrowers to get a mortgage with no down payment. Though not all customers qualify for 100% financing, most meet the VA loan limits. In some cases, qualified applicants may even get VA jumbo loans over the standard $417,000 limit. “Anyone considering a VA loan should talk with us so they have all of the facts,” says Eilerman. “We review each individual’s situation and provide guidance so our borrowers can make the loan decision that’s right for them.” This content is for informational purposes. You can contact Ivy Eilerman at First Guaranty Mortgage Corporation if you have any questions or want to discuss any mortgage loan programs and features.

He states that he receives many requests to survey a piece of property after it has been purchased. In many cases the buyer did not get what they thought they were buying. Craig works closely with homeowners and flood insurance providers to help identify things that can be done to lower premiums. This enhances our ability to execute a service deeply rooted in family values. We want to give you the renovation that will bring one phrase to mind - ‘HALLELUYAH.’” That’s what’s in HalleluYAH Restoration’s name. Everything. What is HalleluYAH Restoration? It’ s locally owned and family operated by owners Marc and Kristina Pack, who’ve been in the exterior restoration business since 2005. They do everything from windows and doors to fencing and decks, and from siding and gutters to additions and porches, and though they’re based in Effingham County, they do renovations from Beaufort County, S.C. to Bulloch County, Ga. They use the finest materials, like Trex decking and Simonton Windows. They also offer financing. With both a Facebook page and an easy to navigate website, getting a quote is as easy as going on line and asking for someone to come out and take a look at the job. And HalleluYAH Restorations gives back to such worthy causes as recreation sports and Habitat for Humanity. That’s why, when the company opens up its 3,500-square foot showroom at 2667 Highway 80 in Bloomingdale on Saturday, May 14, a good portion of the proceeds from various raffles will be donated to

help others. “It’s really important to our company to give back to our community,” said Marc Pack. “We’re here to provide more than a service. We strive to be professional, to do the best work possible and to give back.” But don’t just take Marc’s word for it. Online reviewers also give HalleluYAH Restorations high marks. This 5-star review was posted on Facebook by a Statesboro man: “HalleluYAH Restoration installed a double french door in our home. They were prompt, courteous and finished their work with excellence. They earned my highest commendation. They are good people. The entire crew was respectful, responsive and left everything in perfect condition.” Here’s another 5-star shout out to HalleluYAH Restoration from a school teacher in Screven County: “The terrific team from HalleluYAH Restoration out of Guyton just finished my privacy fence. Lowes sent them out here. They were hard working, very professional, and well mannered. My fence is perfect!! Thank you!” There’s more where those came from, and additional 5-star ratings on other sites as well. So Google HalleluYAH Restorations and see what satisified customers are saying. Treasures from Viola’s Attic

o understand the vision for Viola’s Attic, one must understand the company’s namesake. Owner Melissa Strudgeon’s grandmother, Viola, lived through the Great Depression. And like many others who lived in this age, Viola felt it was important to save and to

share. Melissa lovingly speaks of her Grandmother. “She was recycling before anyone even knew what recycling meant. She saved every gift she was given, and if they were not displayed to share with anyone that entered her home, they were lovingly wrapped and well preserved in the attic of her farmhouse. I have many wonderful childhood memories of hours spent with my grandmother going through boxes of family treasures. She would pull from that magical space my family simply calls “Gram’s Attic,” says Melissa. Melissa and her husband, Sean, wanted to create a shop that represented their customer’s lifestyle. Whether seeking a custom chair for their coastal home, a one-of-a-kind pillow to express a husband’s love of fishing, a leather bracelet similar to the one they saw on Kenny Chesney’s website, a durable area rug for a child’s room, personalized flip flops and a matching cover-up to wear to Tybee, Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® to make a beloved family heirloom match their style, a unique chandelier for their dining room, or a memorable gift to celebrate a special occasion, the couple wanted to accommodate. In offering their customers such a variety of treasures, it was apparent they had a bit of a dilemma. What does a person name a shop that offers so many treasures? It simply can’t be narrowed down to being described as just a home decor and accessory

shop, a ladies boutique, a paint and interior design studio, or a gift shop. Thinking back to her grandmother’s attic and how she loved exploring it as a child, Melissa remembered she was never quite sure of the treasures she would find. It became immediately clear the shop was just as special, just as unique, just as magical a place as her grandmother’s attic, so, the name is only fitting… Viola’s Attic! Melissa, who has degrees in both architecture and interior design, has 20 years in the industry. Joining her team at Viola’s Attic is Jessica Kennedy, a veteran in the home décor industry. Melissa says, “Jessica is awesome. She knows every product in our shop, from the furniture to the décor, to women’s accessories to the history of the candles we sell. She is amazing.” Visit Viola’s Attic for beautiful furnishings and home décor… and an abundance of other treasures!

eorgia real estate law requires a real estate agent to be licensed for three years before they can take the broker’s course and state exam. How many Realtors can say they passed the broker’s exam faster than that? DiAnna Jenkins can. First licensed in 2003, through hard work, education and a determination to succeed, DiAnna earned her broker’s license in 2006. Since then, she’s been working just as hard for her clients, and she will work just as hard for you. DiAnna proudly assists home buyers and sellers in and around Savannah and works to simplify the process of real estate for her clients. If you’re selling, DiAnna has years of marketing experience. She’ll get to know your home and use that knowledge and her understanding of the current real estate market to price your home to sell. DiAnna is also happy to make suggestions in staging to appeal to today’s buyers. If you are looking to purchase a home, DiAnna will listen to you to help you find your perfect home. Once you find that home, she will negotiate to make it a dream come true. She enjoys the challenge of putting those pieces of the puzzle together and strongly believes in communication and customer service. DiAnna works regularly with a wonderful team of lenders, attorneys and inspectors to be sure her clients are getting the best service available. There are a lot of things that go on during the process of buying and selling, and it is very important to DiAnna that she explains things so her customers understand each step along the way.

Trisha Cook with Keller Williams Realty:

Putting People First T story by katrice williams

risha Cook is a local Pooler Realtor with Keller Williams Realty; the area’s leading real estate company. She and her team closed on over 150 homes in 2015, and while that’s something to be proud of, it’s not what she’s most passionate about. She says that her team’s goal is to provide the ‘wow factor’ level of customer service to every one of their clients. In fact, their team motto is “Real Estate with a Servant’s heart.” Three years ago Trisha brought the Homes for Heroes Program to the greater Savannah GA area. Homes for Heroes is the nation’s largest hero savings program that was initially started on behalf of the Heroes of 9/11. The program has grown to now provide support to the military and veterans, law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, healthcare providers, teachers and clergy members. Specifically, through the Homes for Heroes program, Trisha offers eligible buyers and sellers savings of 25 percent on her Realtor fees; discounted lender fees on purchases and refinances through a Homes for Heroes preferred lender; discounted closing fees through a Homes For Heroes preferred closing attorney, discounted home inspections with a Homes for Heroes preferred home inspection company, and much more. The list actually goes on and on of vendors who have joined Trisha in her efforts to give back to local heroes. According to Trisha, the program can potentially save homebuyers and sellers thousands of dollars. This is our way to say thank you by giving back to those who serve our community everyday. Homes for Heroes not only works by providing significant savings, but also has a charity that gives back to heroes in need. When hero home buyers or sellers Trisha as their local Homes for Heroes Realtor, donations for every closing go directly toward helping manage the Homes for Heroes Foundation, which provides assistance to different heroes around the

country in need of assistance each and every month. It’s a great cause; one Cook believes is passionate about. Last year, alone, Trisha and her team gave back over $100,000 to local Heroes through the Homes for Heroes program. To help make things even easier for all of their clients, The Trisha Cook Team bought their own moving truck in 2015 and offers each client free use of moving truck anytime they see a need for it. That’s a big savings, but it’s just part of the services offered by Cook, who got into real estate because she “loves helping people realize their dreams.” A longtime Pooler resident, she’s invested in her community and wants to see it continue to grow and prosper. She founded the popular Facebook Page, “it’s Cooler in Pooler,” which has nearly 12,000 fans who are kept up to date on local happenings, events and more. Whether it’s Homes for Heroes, free use of their moving truck for all her clients or

her longtime commitment to Pooler; it’s just another way Cook is invested in people and the community she calls home. An accomplished Realtor, she’s respected by both clients and her peers on the Savannah Board of Realtors. She is a Distinguished Sales Society Continuing Member, has won the Homebuilder’s Association ‘General Brokerage Agent of the Year’ in 2013, 2014, and 2015, and the Trisha Cook Team won the Association’s General Brokerage Team of the Year in 2014 & 2015. In addition, Keller Williams International has named Cook a Platinum Award winner, and she was voted the Savannah Mornings News “Best of West Chatham Winner” for Best Realtor. What’s next for The Trisha Cook Team? Trisha says to look for them very soon to open their own office in Pooler, where she hopes to get even more involved with the local community. Trisha just leased a space at Morgan’s Corner and hopes to have the build out complete by mid-summer.
