Protecting residents, families, employees and visitors from the dangers of second-hand smoke. When you’re ready to quit. We’re ready to help. The Georgia Tobacco Quit Line: 1-877-270-STOP In November 2014, electors in the City of Pooler voted overwhelmingly (nearly 83%) in favor of adopting a “Smoke-Free Air” ordinance. The ordinance was adopted by City Council and became effective January 1, 2015. The ordinance eliminates smoking in all workplaces and prohibits smoking within 10 feet or a reasonable distance from outside entrances, operable windows and ventilation systems of businesses, to insure that tobacco smoke does not enter those areas when the business is open or occupied by one (1) or more persons.

Wow! 9 Years! They say time flies when you’re having fun……and we have had some fun! There is no way you can produce a local magazine in a place like Pooler, Georgia and not have fun. The people have been so receptive to us and to what we do….we have been embraced with open arms. Being from the area was a plus, but I never dreamed the many places Independence Day Publishing would take me. It has truly been a blessing to me. The best part of all that fun is we get to share it with you. For the past 9 years, we have been sharing your city, your community and your neighbors with you on the pages of Pooler Magazine. Recently I received a message from one of my writers. It said, “Julie, there are no words for the wonder, joy, excitement and opportunities that Julie Hales, PUBLISHER you have given me. Thank you forever.” The message touched my heart. When I opened this business, the thing that was most important to me was to print positive stories about people in our communities and highlight the good people that do wonderful things. We have done this. And, it has afforded us many great opportunities. There is wonder. There is joy. There is excitement. And, to know that I can share that with my writers, my staff and my readers, certainly makes my job so fulfilling. Bring on our 10th year, because we have barely gotten started.

Amber Simone: Rising Gospel Singing Phenomenon

M

Story by KATRICE WILLIAMS

any individuals have aspirations they carry with them throughout the course of their lives, some of which stem from very young ages; however, many are never reached. Amber Huffman knew she wanted to sing when she was 3 years old and is now living that dream. Amber, 20, is the daughter of Mrs. Sherilyn Cody-Daughtry and Mr. James Daughtry. She is also a graduate of Memorial Day School, and one of her goals is to become a pharmaceutical technician. That may have to wait a while. Amber, who performs under the stage name Amber Simone, is now esteemed as a national recording artist. What’s more, her life is rapidly changing before her eyes as she begins to delve more deeply into her true love—singing. Amber is currently preparing to spend a significant amount of time in the studio and is delighted by the idea. Amber recalls holding a hairbrush at age 3 while pretending that it was a microphone as she sang into it. Though she is not that imaginative little girl any more, one can hardly tell when seeing her bright smile and giddiness that’s so very obvious when she talks about singing. Amber discovered she had quite a melodious voice around 3rd grade. She remembers quietly singing in the lunchroom one day and noticed that she had a small audience. “I saw a lot of faces turn like ‘Oh my gosh… she has a beautiful voice.’ Since then, I’ve been singing,” says Amber, who chose to sing gospel music, which she whole-heartedly prefers. “I’ve sang a lot of R&B (Rhythm & Blues) in my day, but they’ve never really gotten me or other people like I wanted. I remember singing a church solo, and while I sang it, I actually felt it. I like gospel songs. For me, I feel at home when I’m singing gospel. I grew up in the church; that’s what I’m comfortable doing.”

Photos by NATALIE MCALISTER As a child, Amber sang in the youth choir at her church. There, she met her current vocal coach, Pastor Errol Roach, who is also a musician at the church. Pastor Roach has shown a great amount of commitment to Amber’s singing endeavors since 2009. He vocally coaches her and writes the songs that she sings. He also plans to help her learn the craft of songwriting. “I’m about to start learning how to write my own songs,” Amber says. It has been a memorable and rewarding road for Amber. Whether pageants, recitals or talent shows, she has a notable array of accomplishments under her belt and became accustomed to competing at a very young age. She reveals the very first trophy that she won in 1999; she was Miss Sweetheart for the entire Pre-K class at her school. She shows her first singing contest trophy awarded to her in 3rd grade for a performance at her church. Amber even displays a trophy that she received when she starred as the very renown, Queen of Gospel, Mahalia Jackson for a Black History event at school. None of Amber’s awards and accomplishments has stuck out quite as much as her recent Prayze Factor victory. Prayze Factor is a national People’s Choice Award contest for artists seeking to gain more exposure for their gospel ministry and music. Most of the competition is Internet-based. It’s fan-driven, so gospel fans are the ultimate voters throughout the three-round process. The recent competition spanned from May to August. Artists competed via Internet in various categories, including a cappella and video. Amber was initially nominated for A Cappella Artist of the Year by her friend and fellow aspiring artist Yasmin Ariana. Following her nomination, Amber submitted a video displaying her gift of song. Throughout the contest, she received a plethora of votes in various categories, which allowed her to advance and ultimately made her a finalist in the competition. She was invited to attend the 2015 Season 7 Prayze Factor Awards Finale, which was held September 18-20 in

“I remember singing a church solo, and while I sang it, I actually felt it. I like gospel songs. For me, I feel at home when I’m singing gospel. I grew up in the church; that’s what I’m comfortable doing.” Atlanta. Amber still recalls the excitement of the event. Between interviews, red carpet pictures and continuous rehearsals, she received very little rest. Over those few days, contestants were consistently judged in a variety of areas, including their politeness, friendliness and positive interaction with other artists. They were even judged on their business acumen as it related to the industry. Interestingly enough, they didn’t know who was judging them. Amber feels that it taught the importance of being polite at all times. She says, “You never know who you could be talking to.” Unlike many finalists who had more experience and even professional recordings, Amber did not. She recalls wondering, “Oh my gosh…I don’t have anything. How am I going to do this?” By the time it was over, she had done it. Amber finished in fifth place, receiving more than 9 million votes. “I think I did pretty good,” she says. Regarding other special goals she has as an artist, Amber says that she wants to “travel all around the world and help people through her ministry.” She would especially like to be a good example for young people. Amber asserts, “I try to catch a lot of young kids who say they don’t want to be preached to or want people talking down to them. I feel that if they see a young person ministering through music and song that they’ll actually want to come to church and actually give their lives to God. Some people are actually ashamed of saying that they love God -- no reason to be ashamed.” She also relays a message of encourage-

ment saying, “Believe in yourself, even if others do not; don’t let it bring you down. Just do it!” Amber’s mentors include her mom, Sherilyn. “She stays on me,” notes Amber, who said that her mom continuously encourages her even when rehearsing. She tells her to do it over and over again until it’s right. Amber points out, “That lady is a trooper. She calls herself my mom-a-ger. She stays everywhere I go; she’s always there.” Amber expresses appreciation for her dad, James, who strives to be there when she needs him and to support her many endeavors. Amber is also very grateful to Pastor Roach for all his help. “He has taught me so much about music, my vocals and how to control them,” she insists. Additionally, Amber talks about her favorite artist of all time, Ms. Shirley Caesar. She expresses a great deal of admiration for the gospel legend. Amber has loved her music since she was a small child. “I love all her songs,” she says. Amber has been invited to a variety of events since her Prayze Factor success. She’s really looking forward to attending one in particular where she will perform in Montego Bay, Jamaica on December 5. She admits, “I’m excited about that one.” The future appears bright and beautiful for Amber Simone. It’s obvious that she is anxiously anticipating what it has to offer. One thing is for sure…her voice will be heard. In her own words, “I really just love singing and expressing how I feel through my music.”

First Baptist Church of Pooler CELEBRATING 130 YEARS

A

Story by CINDY BURBAGE

nniversaries are a celebration and when you reach a milestone of 130 years, that is a time of rejoicing. “For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting; and His truth endureth to all generations.”~Psalms 100:5 Nestled in the heart of Pooler, First Baptist Church began worship in 1885 and three years later its membership officially opened the door on their first sanctuary, equipped with a clarion bell in the steeple. The ringing of the bell would alert folks to gather at the church for important information. Before the church was constructed, the congregation met in various individual homes and even the local blacksmith shop. From 1888 to 1928, the church building faced the property on Chestnut Street, but in September of 1928, a horrific storm passed through Savannah and Pooler, damaging the facility beyond repair and use. This was at the peak of the Great Depression and funds were not available for a quick rebuild. The assembly again began meeting in homes and the Presbyterian Church offered its support as well. By 1933, a second sanctuary was built on the grounds of the current church and outfitted with the same bell. In 1963, a third bethel was constructed and as before, the bell was moved into the new steeple. The consistency of the bell is a symbol for what First Baptist stands for. Reverend Darrell Bailey explains, “The clarion call of the bell symbolizes what we’ve always believed, taught and preached. It is what we will carry on in the future.” So, the transplanting of the bell each time a new steeple was erected exemplified the growth of the church with the community; but the sound of the bell signals that the sound of the church will not change. The message is the same as yesterday, as today and as it will be tomorrow. On October 18, a joyful congregation commemorated the 130th year of First Baptist Church. More than two hundred people were present at this momentous occasion, along with guest speakers, such as Congressman Buddy Carter. The church’s homecoming celebration was complemented by a lovely history presentation courtesy of Clyde Watson, as well as an abundance of beautiful music for their praise and worship. They were also honored by Pooler Mayor Mike Lamb, who signed a proclamation, and announced October 18,2015 as First Baptist Church of Pooler Day. Many specials were sung with heartfelt love by performers such as Glenn Smith and Pam Martina; not to mention the youth band-Oxygen which appropriately performed the song “Thrive.” Lunch was enjoyed by all following the services. This was truly a celebration of the spirit of the church. According to church member Shirley Rash, “Churches are a

Photos by NATALIE MCALISTER network to the community, I call it a safety net. We are a support, a family of hope and salvation for our neighbors.” First Baptist also has an array of ministries that can accommodate a variety of demographics. They collect canned foods and monies for the Community Food Bank that is housed at Rothwell Baptist Church, also in Pooler. The inner city Savannah Baptist Center is another service the church is involved in, feeding ladies in need. Making a difference in the community is an important factor in being that constant beacon. This Pooler chapel reaches out to

neighbors with love in numerous ways. During the summer they have their annual Vacation Bible School and in the fall they give an alternative for Halloween trick or treating: Trunk or Treat. They have hosted Friday night meals and family movie night, all open to the public. The more things change, the more they stay the same. With the need to reach out and fellowship with the community, they meet changes that are happening in the world head on. Directly across from the church is the home of the new mega structure of the new Pooler City Hall. With this being their front door view, Rev Bailey comments. “The church is in a transition time. Pooler would like to revitalize the old Pooler. Look across the street, construction, a reminder that things change. We are on board with those changes. But as a pastor once said, the method may change but the message does not.” Watson, a member of the church’s history committee, said God is at the forefront of everything. “We serve an Almighty God, who is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent. He is the architect of our lives and has plans for us that exceed our own expectations of that we have already expe-

rienced in the past. As First Baptist Church of Pooler continues to undergo God’s construction process, we know that challenges are in our future. So it is imperative that we stay focused on that solid foundation that has been laid---Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. We must keep on doing the work of the ministry and pray without ceasing. And to God we give the glory. As we go forward we pray for the continued strength of the Lord’s hand on all work done in his name. We pray we will all be as strong in our faith and service for the next 130 years as this church was in the past or until our Lord, Jesus Christ returns.” In the late 1880’s, this community was known as just a whistle stop, a railway stop called Pooler’s Station. And although this hamlet was quite small, it cultivated a staple that would continue to nourish for over a century. According to tradition, the 50th anniversary is marked by a gift of gold, 100th anniversary is established by a gift of precious gems, such as sapphires, emeralds or rubies. Instead of receiving a remembrance for this impeccable milestone, the First Baptist Church of Pooler is the precious gem that sits at 204 W. Highway 80. And with perseverance and God’s blessing, this hometown church is sure to be around for at least another century.

POOLER RECREATION SPOTLIGHT

Coach Todd Roberson

SCORING BIG

Story by JEFF WHITTEN Photos by NATALIE MCALISTER

oach Todd Roberson has been a sports guru for a long time now. Whether being a spectator or being more interactive, he’s definitely an enthusiast for a variety of sports. Even more, Coach Roberson takes pride in helping children develop their athletic skills and meet proper fitness needs. He, along with his wife Shannon, 8 year old son Palmer and 4 year old daughter Emme has called Pooler home for some time now. Actually, Coach Roberson, a native of Oklahoma City. He moved to the Coastal Empire when he was only 12 years old, after his dad accepted a new career opportunity at Gulfstream Aerospace. However, expressing a great deal of community pride, he states, “I consider myself from here.” Coach Roberson has been a physical education teacher for about 17 years. He has taught in Richmond Hill, Savannah and Hardeeville, South Carolina, while his experience spans all levels of education—elementary, middle and high school. Presently, Coach Roberson is a physical education teacher at Hodge Elementary School. In addition to his teaching career, he has coached an array of sports over the years, including football, basketball, volleyball, softball, soccer and track. Some time ago, Coach Roberson decided to take some time away from the sports arena so that he could spend time with his own small children. As his kids grew, they began to take a big interest in different sports—the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. The coach decided to take his many skills to the Pooler Recreation Department, where he has coached a variety of sports for over 4 years. Interestingly enough, it works out well, especially since he has been able to coach both his kids over several seasons. Coach Roberson responds, “I don’t have to miss out with my kid’s moments.” He coaches both U6 and U8 teams. He says that he “teaches the basics and fundamentals.” When asked about his favorite sports to coach, he said, “I do all of them. I’m just a sports guy. I have the knowledge for all of them; I enjoy all the sports.” He believes in the potential of each child that he coaches and strives to be a positive role model for each of them. Coach Roberson has several philosophies about his craft. Aside from mere team participation, he really wants the kids “to learn life lessons,” whether work ethic, teamwork, dedication or even socialization skills. He wants them to be able to apply such things in life on a daily basis. Coach Roberson likes for his athletes to experience victories. In fact, he admits that he is “really intense” when coaching at times, so it’s obvious that he has a sincere passion for what he does. Even more, he wants his players to value important principles. He asserts, “It’s not about winning or losing, it’s about how we do things; that’s what I try to teach and instill within my children. My goal for each child is to get the best out of each

one—to pull out their full potential.” Coach Roberson inspires them “to work hard, be able to take criticism and be able to adapt to different techniques.” Moreover, he wants his little athletes to thoroughly learn the sport that they’re in—only then will they be successful players. Understanding that all children are unique, the coach knows that it’s important to adapt to each individual child and help them with their goals. He feels that all the kids tremendously benefit from “someone who has time and someone who’s a good listener.” Concerning this, Coach Roberson says, “My best skill is management.” He has found that his vast experience as a physical education schoolteacher tends to be very beneficial on the recreational side of things. He comments, “I apply my elementary teaching to the little kids as well.” Coach Roberson feels that recreational sports are very important, providing a great start for many kids. They are able to encourage kids to be active and fit by doing the things they enjoy. Recreational athletics cater to a variety of talent levels, which allows almost any child to feel comfortable as they develop their skill at an appropriate pace. Regarding this the coach suggests, “If you have a good foundation when you’re young, you can build from it; you can only grow.” Coach Roberson is really proud to see each child’s individual development. He mentions, “I see a lot of growth; that’s what I look for, growth, from beginning to end.” In addition to his recreational coaching and overall teaching career, the coach has several achievements under his belt. He held the title of Hardeeville Elementary School Teacher of the Year in 2010. He was also a South Carolina P.E. Teacher of the Year finalist for two years. Savannah Morning News reported Coach Roberson as the Girls Basketball Coach of the Year in 2005. Furthermore, he has done basketball statistics for Armstrong State University for 18 years and statistics for Jacksonville’s NCAA March Madness in 2006 & 2010. Aside from the sports side of things, the coach loves to spend time with his family in his spare time, whether at the beach, the pool or just doing something active together outdoors. He also really enjoys playing disc golf at Tom Triplett Park in Pooler. The coach speaks highly of the City of Pooler and its recreational department and appreciates all that they do to enhance the quality of life in the community. He states, “I tip my hat off to those guys, because they do a good job.” Whether on the field or at school, Coach Todd Roberson has used his coaching expertise to make a difference in the lives of many children over the years. He continues to enjoy interacting with them and helping them build on their athletic talents. All in all, Coach Roberson says, “It’s been fun!” www.PoolerMagazine.com | November/December 2015

Pooler, Georgia

MIGHTY 8TH AIR FORCE MUSEUM photography by Monica Bailey

We owe our World War II veterans - and all our veterans - a debt we can never fully repay. - Doc Hastings America’s Greatest Generation won a war and saved the world, and that generation includes the courageous men and women of the Mighty Eighth Air Force. Formed in Savannah in 1942, the Eighth Air Force compiled an impressive service record during and after World War II, and continues to serve to this day. Visit the grounds, see the exhibits and help keep the Mighty Eighth’s memory alive. OGLETHORPE SPEEDWAY photography by Bryan Browning

I drive way too fast to worry about cholesterol. - Author Unknown Few things are as southern as racing on a Friday or Saturday night, and Oglethorpe Speedway Park has been entertaining race fans and drivers alike since 1951. Races on the half-mile clay speedway routinely draw spectators from around the Coastal Empire and South Carolina Lowcountry. Family oriented, the speedway has long been a part of the fabric of Pooler. Learn more about it at www.ospracing.net.

SHOPPING THE TANGER OUTLETS photography by Monica Bailey

Whoever said money can’t buy happiness simply didn’t know where to go shopping. ~Bo Derek When Tanger Outlets Savannah opened its latest outlet mall in Pooler in April, shoppers flocked in droves to check out the mall’s 85 stores and 400,000 square feet of retail space. The new hasn’t worn off yet, either. There’s another phase on the way, which will eventually double the size of what the media called a “regional retail mecca” back in the spring. Visit http://www.tangeroutlet.com/savannah for more information.

POOLER YMCA photography by Jeff Whitten

Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being, while movement and methodical physical exercise save it and preserve it. ~Plato Feel the need to burn some calories, break a sweat, shoot some hoops or just take a swim? Try the Y. The YMCA of Coastal Georgia operates 10 branches around the Coastal Empire, including the one in Pooler, and if you’re looking for what the Y is all about, try this on for size: “the YMCA is a cause-driven organization that is for youth development, for healthy living and for social responsibility,” says the organization’s website. WORSHIP

photography by Jeff Whitten

Faith and prayer are the vitamins of the soul; man cannot live in health without them. - Mahalia Jackson Religion plays an important role in the fabric of Pooler, and there are a number of churches in the city ready to welcome those who seek a place to worship. Some are large, others small. Some are brand new, others have been around as long as the city itself. If you’re looking for a place to worship, check out the church directory on the city’s website: www.pooler-ga.us.

TRIPLETT PARK photography by Monica Bailey

To me a lush carpet of pine needles or spongy grass is more welcome than the most luxurious Persian rug. - Helen Keller Few things are as relaxing or refereshing as an autumn afternoon in a park. Pooler’s Tom Triplett Park is just the place to go barefoot, feed the ducks, host a family picnic, wet a hook or play tennis. There’s also a conference room, a jogging/bike trail, a dog exercise area, a playground and a disc golf course. You can check it out at www.parks.chathamcounty.org.

ENTERTAINMENT Most of us spend our lives as if we had another one in the bank. - Ben Irwin All work and no play may make us richer in one sense, but it makes us immeasurably poorer in another. So, live a little. Whether it’s catching a movie, bowling with friends or having a romantic night on the town with that special someone, Pooler has plenty of options to choose from. Our advice: let yourself be entertained. For more info search for “Things to Do in Pooler Georgia” and you’ll quickly find a number of options.

Things You Want To Know About STACIE TAYLOR

1. I am a very happy wife and a mother of all daughters working in Pooler, GA as a Senior Mortgage Loan Originator for over 14 years now. 2. A pretty cool fact would be that I am pretty fearless as well as an overachiever. Jumping out of an airplane was the last on my bucket list however the first that I accomplished. 3. I love my family dearly and it plays a large part in why I want to help other families achieve living the American dream. I guess you could say I do get a little attached but I don’t feel there is anything wrong with that. 4. I have many repeat clients who refer others to me which is the biggest compliment I could ever strive for. 5. I have been known to fight for my clients to obtain the financing that I feel they deserve. There is nothing better than one thinking they do not have a chance and to see their huge smiles on closing day. 6. I’ve always been considered as a little on the creative side which I feel helps me in the mortgage industry to creatively structure my clients into programs that fit. 7. I love the company I work for, my coworkers, family, friends, and my clients. I give them much credit for my success over the years as I am only as strong as those backing me up. 8. I’ve been in the mortgage industry for over 14 years now as a mortgage loan originator and do not see myself ever doing anything else. It is my true passion! I am currently licensed to originate in Georgia, Alabama, Colorado, DC, Florida, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. I am always happy to assist anyone looking for a mortgage to purchase a home or refinance and I’m just a phone call away.
