As an owner of multiple businesses, the Women in Business Issue is one of my favorites. I love sharing the stories of women who are leading their own companies and nonprofit organizations and giving back to the community at the same time.

The women featured in this issue are blazing new trails. Our cover story is an inspiring feature on local high school student Julianna Shorette. Julianna repurposes plastic bags into sleeping mats for the homeless. She recently founded Pooler Plarn to coordinate her efforts and grow her mission in the community.

We connected with Estelle Ramos who guides girls ages 8-12 through adolescence with her nonprofit organization Girls with Purpose. She and her dedicated volunteers mentor girls through activities like faith-based lessons, team-building exercises, group discussion and an annual gala.

Catherine Grant, is blazing her own path and building a better approach to healthcare through her role as founder and CEO of ExperCARE.

There are so many amazing businesswomen in our community that we couldn’t highlight them all. We’ve devoted a section to reader-submitted nominations of women who are achieving great things in their businesses, including Kimberly Patel, owner of Halo Salt Studio & Spa and Ashleigh Montford, founder and CEO of Opia Designs Company.

We hope these stories will inspire you to go after your dreams and give back to your community in meaningful ways. Thanks for reading Pooler Magazine

JESSICA N. SAULS IS A CUT ABOVE THE REST

Hairstylist, business owner and now author: Jessica N. Sauls is a cut above the rest. She is the owner of By Jessica & Co. Beauty Lounge, a salon she opened in 2016 after many years working as a server and manager in upscale restaurants. Her experience in high-end hospitality has helped her create an unforgettable experience in her salon.

Jessica dropped out of high school but completed her education later in life. In 2015, she enrolled in a program to become a master cosmetologist and harnessed that experience to open her salon. Starting a business was a no-brainer for Jessica because she always knew it was something she wanted to do.

“Finding somewhere to put it was the biggest challenge,” Jessica says. She ultimately landed in Pooler, where clients have enjoyed the convenience of her location.

By Jessica & Co. is a team of five stylists—two of whom have been with the salon since it opened—who offer haircuts for men, women and children, an array of color and highlight treatments and styling. They also offer eyebrow and eyelash services, where Jessica is able to contribute to a cause near and dear to her heart.

Giving Back

She gives back to the community through her own line of hand-designed eyelashes, J LUV LASHES. Each style is dedicated to a woman who has battled cancer, including Jessica’s mother. With each purchase, customers can buy an additional pair that will be donated to a cancer patient at the Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion at St. Joseph’s/Candler.

Becoming a Published Author

Jessica has thrived as a business owner, but has now taken a new step that has taken more courage and bravery than entrepreneurship.

She has written and published a book titled You Have to Feel to Deal, and it details her journey from a difficult childhood to the fulfillment and success she has found today through hard work, faith in God and her two sons.

“Writing the book was probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” Jessica says. The writing process was even more challenging for Jessica because she has dyslexia, which makes reading more difficult for her. Despite that, she has always had a love for writing that stemmed from poems that she would write for her mom.

Future Ventures

Sharing her life’s ups and downs has inspired Jessica to pursue a new venture in addition to operating her salon. She is studying to become a life coach with a focus on mental health.

“I felt like it was a way I could help women who come into my business that are hurting,” Jessica says. “Learning more about mental health will let me help in a positive way.”

Jessica hosted a book signing at By Jessica & Co. in late February to celebrate the release of her book, which was published in November 2022. You can order a copy of You Have to Feel to Deal from jessicansauls.com or pick up a copy at By Jessica & Co. in Pooler.

JULIANNA SHORETTE: An Entrepreneur With a Humanitarian Heart

Story by Katrice Williams | Photography by Leidi Lester

ulianna Shorette—a ninth-grade student at Savannah Arts Academy (SAA)—is making a mark in her community by making a beautiful difference in the lives of those who are often overlooked and disregarded. Julianna recently began her non-profit organization known as Pooler Plarn—its purpose is to make crocheted sleeping mats for the homeless community in the Savannah area.

“There is such a large homeless population in Savannah. I may not be able to give them a home, but at least they’ll have an insulated mat to sleep on,” Julianna says.

Plarn

Plarn is a portmanteau of plastic and yarn and is used to knit or crochet plastic shopping bags into sleeping mats, providing a waterproof barrier for sleeping on the ground—something that is especially beneficial to the homeless population.

Plastic is a durable material that is easy to maintain. The idea has been used worldwide to offer better sleeping conditions for homeless individuals. Over the past decade, the simple yet ingenious concept has gained notoriety, providing homeless communities with hygienic, waterproof and easily transportable protection.

“What I realized was that a lot of the homeless in the Savannah area

sleep on benches. As we know, Savannah can be very rainy, especially throughout hurricane season. It’s probably not comfortable at all to sleep on the wet, cold benches,” Julianna says.

Inspiration

Julianna knows that her compassion and generosity stem largely from her grandma Sharon Noakes, who has long embraced a sincere heart for service to her community.

Sharon is one of Julianna’s biggest inspirations. Julianna enjoys the time spent with her grandma helping those in need. Sharon participates in various

“She is always helping out at church with service projects in order to give back to her community. It really inspired me to do something similar in my own community,” Julianna says.

Pooler Plarn Begins

That is exactly what Julianna did. She did a lot of research and became acquainted with the plarn process of cutting plastic bags in order to braid or weave them.

“Like any kid, I YouTubed how to weave the mats. I tried some different methods,” she says.

service activities alongside her church community—Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Pennsylvania. When Julianna has visited her over the holidays, they have participated in the church’s “Operation Shoe Box” together, where shoe boxes are made and decorated, then filled with donated gifts to provide Christmas presents for underprivileged children.

In addition, Sharon’s church has been involved in a plarning project for the homeless. In October, she sent Julianna a newsletter talking about the project.

As with most newly developed skills, trial and error often plays a part in learning the process. But after a lot of practice, Julianna began to get the hang of it all. She even began to understand the importance of the little things, such as how necessary it is to cut the bags evenly so that there is no stray plastic hanging from the mats upon completion. It takes about 500 plastic bags to make one mat.

Julianna—a member of Ascension Lutheran Church—contacted its Grace Ministry, which has a notable outreach program that is dedicated to helping those in need in the local area. Every Saturday at 7:00am, the ministry distributes toiletries to the local homeless community. Julianna knew that it would serve as a great avenue to distribute her

mats, and the church was on board. She could not be more thrilled.

“They really appreciate it and think it’s a good addition to the ministry,” she says.

Further, Julianna’s workplace donates countless bags for the cause. Her family has also been a great support system; they, too, strive to help with the initiative.

“All of my family donate bags that they collect from going to the grocery store,” she says. Such simple acts have proved to do a world of good.

As a high school student who takes pride in maintaining good grades while also working part-time, Julianna gives much of the available time she has to the plarn cause. Each mat can take over a week to complete, or about 10 hours total from start to finish. There are various ways in which the mats can be made.

“There are lots of different ways that you can do it. I found the easiest way for me—though my weaving method may be different, it’s basically the same outcome,” she says. From airing out the bags before the proper cuts and folds are made to separating the plarn, the entire process can be detailed and extensive. Upon completion, each mat measures about 6 feet by 2.5 feet. Julianna’s goal is to provide about 10 mats every two months.

Genuine Regard

Though Julianna is the heart behind the project, she appreciates the love and support of her family. She is thankful for her parents—her mom Stephanie and her dad Chris. Her mom helps collect bags for the cause. She is also grateful to have the assistance of her two younger sisters: Kourtney, 12, and Teagan, 11. “Usually, I’ll have my sisters to cut the

“I think that would be good—the more mats that can be made to help the homeless plight, the better,” she says.

She encourages others to make a positive impact on their community by helping individuals in need, understanding that even the smallest effort can make a big difference.

“A lot of organizations that help the homeless in our area need a lot of items, such as toiletries and basic necessities – sunscreen in the summer or gloves in the winter,” she says.

bags for me so that I’ll save time on that. They’ve gotten good about flattening out the bags into colored, sorted stacks for me to cut,” she says. In fact, Kourtney and Teagan may even continue Pooler Plarn when Julianna goes to college.

Making a Difference

Julianna takes a world of pride in Pooler Plarn, and she is just getting started. The young humanitarian is excited about the growth of her organization. She would be happy to see even more young people take part in the cause; she is looking forward to training her church’s youth group.

Upon graduating, the talented honor student plans to obtain a business degree while majoring in human resource management. It is all completely within her reach, as Julianna has the mindset necessary for true and lasting success. She has recently been privileged to receive a businessrelated internship opportunity.

In her spare time, Julianna enjoys playing golf; she is confident that her skill set will prove to be useful to her future career endeavors since golf is one of the most popular recreational sports for many business professionals.

The future is bright for Julianna Shorette, especially as she continues to make an incredible difference in the lives of others. ■

The W.B. Biddenbach House, Circa 1888

Old houses that are loved and cherished become only more beautiful over time. The W.B. Biddenbach House, circa 1888 is one such house. Tucked away on a large corner lot in Pooler, GA, this Plantation Home with Colonial Revival architecture is a true Southern classic, as lovely as the camellias that bloom in the backyard come early spring. Beautifully maintained, kept mostly in her original form, the W.B.Biddenbach home has not only survived, it has thrived under the loving care of its owners throughout the years.

The Owners

The lot was originally subdivided by Dan Newton, who may have also built the house. The land was purchased from the Central Georgia Railroad. Historically, this home was the original meeting place for Trinity Methodist Pooler—founded in 1888—where Biddenbach was one of the three original Trustees of the Church. The Biddenbach Family had arrived in Georgia in 1750 when Christian Biddenbach immigrated from Germany. He, and other family members, are buried in Ebenezer, Effingham County.

The next owner on record is Mrs. Gary Goggins (Lola), who resided there from 1935-1968. She was one of the first women to vote in the state of Georgia, the only woman Alderman for Pooler at that time, and was also one of the original Trustees of the Church.

It was then purchased in 1973 by Pooler historian and beloved local history teacher, Wayne Seay. Born in Florida, his family moved “north” to Georgia and, during World War II, Seay served in the 1st Infantry Division (“The Big Red One”), U.S. Army. After completing his military service, he joined the faculty of Robert W. Groves

High School where he taught history and social studies for 28 years.

Seay was elected to the Pooler City Council, where he served for a time as Mayor Pro-Tem. A lifelong member of Trinity Methodist Church Pooler, he served as Sunday School teacher, choir member (60 years), song leader and Church Historian. He cherished his Historic Home which has remained in his Family continuously.

The House Today

Today the house is a blend of antique charm and modern practicality. As you approach the home, the welcoming front porch lends views through the floor to ceiling float glass windows framed by the full-length vintage shutters. The porch is a classic Southern porch, with ample room for casual visiting and formal entertaining.

The original hardwood floors throughout the House are complemented by the wide hallways of the era. Antique touches include shiplap walls, clawfoot bathtubs, and gorgeous fireplace mantles. The home is decorated with antiques throughout and the original woodwork is in pristine condition. The old-fashioned back porch is fully screened and just the right size for a couple of rocking chairs and an antique pie safe. It was made for sipping lemonade and watching the bees buzz in the garden. Spanish moss abounds.

At just over 3,000 square feet, the house currently has two full size kitchens, two dining rooms, three living rooms, three bedrooms and two baths. It has been a family residence but would also make a great bed and breakfast. There is also a large wooden outbuilding, original to the property, with two large bays. There is a

new tin roof, a new HVAC System (2022), double pane windows (with transferable warranty) and the undercarriage has been maintained throughout the years. Both the house and exterior property are in wonderful condition.

The W.B. Biddenbach House is almost as old as Pooler itself and having stood for 135 years (and through many hurricanes), it has witnessed much history. Since the house was built the electric lamp, the teddy bear, air conditioning, the airplane, the telephone, the car, the space shuttle, the computer, and the cell phone have all been invented. The house has stood through the Spanish American War, WWI, WWII, the Cold War, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the War on Terror. It has seen women obtaining the right to vote, the Prohibition era, the stock market crash of 1929, the Great Depression, the Civil Rights Movement, and the landing on the moon. Pooler itself has grown and expanded so much its original founders would be hard pressed to recognize it today, but yet the house remains almost exactly the same as when it was built.

The beautiful walkways made from old bricks from the Goggins Brick Company still grace the grounds. With its original features, such as the charming mantles, this home is a haven—warm and welcoming. For those who love history and old-fashioned craftsmanship, it is a pleasure simply to walk around its large well-appointed rooms. This house provides all the appeal of a historic home but has been updated to live in current times.

After serving as a family home for the last 50 years, it is now being sold. Its southern grace and charm ensure it will truly be cherished by the next lucky owner.

The Salt Table is a locally owned brand of salts, seasoning blends, oils, vinegars, tea, and other specialty foods. The creation of Pooler residents Dave and Carol Legasse, their Salt Table stores also feature hundreds of local specialty foods, almost all “Georgia Grown” (with a few from South Carolina).

It started as a gift. Carol made an original salt blend as Christmas presents for friends and family. It was a resounding success and when friends kept asking for more, the couple thought “maybe we are onto something!”

After a couple years of research and product creation, they chose historic downtown Savannah as the location for their first store. “Tourists come here from all over the world, and they all want local products, which is exactly what we provide,” Carol says. Including its online shop, The Salt Table now has six locations throughout coastal Georgia.

Original Creations

Carol creates about 300 of their own award-winning salt and seasonings and other products that are hand-blended and packaged in Pooler. New flavor profiles are added often with the most recent being, her “Savory Cyprus Salt Blend”, and “Spicy Garlic and Pepper.”

“You have to have salt so you should have good salt,” says Carol.

Her first salt blend, “All ‘Round Good Grinder Blend,” is still their number one seller. She created the popular “Jekyll Island Driftwood Beach Blend” after opening their store on Jekyll Island, and her “Tybee Island Coastal Blend” and “Leek, Chive & Onion” blends were winners for two consecutive years in the “Flavor of Georgia Contest.”

Carol says her ideas are often customer driven. “I love hearing from our customers, online or in person. Recently a woman asked for a product that would enhance her favorite adult beverage, so I created a new line of salt rimmers. They have become quite popular.”

“I think to be successful as an entrepreneur, you need to take what you’ve learned in your previous work experiences and apply it to what you are doing now,’’ she adds. Carol’s background is in operations and accounting, but she loved cooking as a hobby. “In order to really succeed you must be passionate about what you are doing.”

Community Involvement

Carol is very involved in the community, serving as Treasurer of the Pooler Chamber of Commerce, among many other volunteer commitments. Recently she was recognized as a Community STAR by Savannah Technical College, which “honors people who make our world a better place through

their dedication to work, community leadership, or volunteer service.”

Carol says: “Women who want to succeed in business need to get involved in their community, because it’s a wonderful way to meet new people and give back.”

Carol and Dave are pleased with their growth and to be a local employer, working with people who are also passionate about The Salt Table. After 12 years we love what we do and continue to be in a ‘happy spot.”’

The couple enjoy traveling and recently took a Caribbean cruise. Carol says, “With the ability to travel once again, we have some international trips lined up and many more on our bucket list.” They also love going to Jekyll Island, the location of one of their shops, and exploring Georgia.

The Salt Table was picked by readers of Pooler magazine as the “Best Specialty Shop,” and have won numerous awards over the years. In April, Georgia Public Broadcasting will feature The Salt Table in an episode of “Fork in The Road”, a TV show featuring agriculture and food businesses based in Georgia.

The Abbie DeLoach Foundation Turns Tragedy Into a Living Legacy

Life can turn upside down in an instant. That’s what happened for me and all those who loved my older daughter, Abbie, on April 22, 2015. She and her fellow Georgia Southern University students were on their way to a final day of nursing rotations when they were involved in a tragic seven-vehicle wreck due to a distracted driver. Abbie and four of her nursing-student peers died.

When I lost Abbie, I lost a piece of myself. And I vowed that her passing wouldn’t define her, me or our family. I wanted to focus instead on all the good she brought into this world in 21 short years.

Abbie was a fierce athletic competitor yet gentle role model at her Savannah, Georgia, high school. She was captain of the volleyball and basketball teams. While attending Georgia Southern University and working toward a nursing degree, she was active on her Kappa Delta sorority’s competition-winning volleyball team. Abbie was a devoted Christian and the best sister that my younger daughter, Annie, could have wished for.

Although focusing on the positives doesn’t take away the grief or pain, I’ve learned how to move forward by taking one next step. I have a new drive and purpose to help others and keep Abbie’s loving spirit alive.

Guided by Good Works and Vocational Passion

I try to live how Abbie would want me to live. I discovered that I could best do that by forming the Abbie DeLoach Foundation. Founded in 2016, the foundation benefits organizations that reward academic excellence, exemplary service work and athletic commitment. To date, more than $1.25 million in scholarship revenue has been provided to nursing students, student athletes and outreach abroad. Its tagline is “live inspired” because we are inspired by Abbie’s love for life and good works as a student, an athlete and an aspiring nurse.

The foundation holds two major events each year. It provides a scholarship luncheon and sponsors the True Blue 5K + Abbie’s Adventure Race, held on the Georgia Southern Campus during Homecoming Weekend

to celebrate Abbie’s love of football and friends. Additionally, the annual #HandsFreeForAbbie campaign in April coincides with distracted driving awareness month.

Grateful for the Pooler Community

My family and I appreciate everyone in Pooler and its surrounding areas who have supported the Abbie DeLoach Foundation.

I grew up in Garden City and loved it. My family has long served in the community, starting with my father, Jimmy DeLoach. He served three terms as mayor of Garden City from 1973 to 1979 before being elected to represent Chatham County’s 7th District in 1980. He was re-elected to two more four-year terms. As a commissioner, he championed the first Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax in 1983 and the installation of the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force in Pooler.

Many of my values were instilled from my dad, who was focused on faith and community. My family and I do what we believe is the right thing while being faithful, giving back and serving others.

My brother, Eddie DeLoach, has also been active in community service and was mayor of Savannah. And we are proud that the Abbie DeLoach Foundation has scholarship recipient alumni from Pooler. Get involved

If you, too, desire to get involved and give back, the Abbie DeLoach Foundation

welcomes your support. Here are some of the many ways you can help:

• Pray for families that have suffered a loss of a loved one — especially a child.

• Visit our website at AbbieDeloachFoundation.com to learn how you can participate. You can make a donation to go toward scholarships or outreach abroad, and sign up to run in Abbie’s Adventure Race. You can also sign up for our newsletter, read my weekly blog about life topics and how to cope with grief, and connect with us on social media.

• Take the pledge in April at HandsFreeForAbbie.com, commit to end distracted driving and help spread the word on social media with #HandsFreeForAbbie. No parent should have to bury a child due to distracted driving.

Abbie’s time here was much too short, but the Abbie DeLoach Foundation keeps parts of her alive—her spirit, determination, competitiveness, caring nature, concern for others and compassion. Thank you for helping us do that.

Hello, Retail Therapy: The Name Says It All

Serena Yao has loved shopping for a long time. Even as a young girl, she was always thrilled to find that one special item that seemed nearly perfect - that gift that was made especially for her.

“I’ve always loved shopping, and I’ve always loved little, local gift shops,” she says.

The Boutique

Serena opened her store, Hello, Retail Therapy, in December after deciding to share her lifelong passion with others.

“We’re saying ‘hello’ to your retail therapy. It’s retail because you buy something. It’s therapy because it just makes you feel better overall,” she states.

The quaint and inviting gift boutique has quickly become a real gem in the community. Serena wants her customers to have a memorable experience when they come through her doors.

“It makes me very happy when people really like what I carry in the shop. I love it when you find a card that makes you smile or funny coasters that brighten your day,” she comments.

Hello, Retail Therapy offers customers an extensive line of products, including: stationery, home accessories, jewelry,

apparel, bath and body items, candles and much more. The shop also has an area known as “The Pantry,” which offers gourmet foods.

“We have a little bit of everything,” Serena says. She takes pride in carrying various local product lines: Savannah Bee Company, Made by Lane, BeetTan, RHOOT MAN and Fete.

More Than Just Merchandise

In addition, she offers an ear piercing service. The safe, sterile service utilizes the “Blomdahl” system; this technique ensures that “all products and methods are safely designed to avoid the spreading of infection and exposure to nickel during the process.”

Serena launched a line of “permanent jewelry”; it is welded on with no clasp. Gone are the days of losing or forgetting to put on a favorite necklace, bracelet or anklet. It only comes off when you want it to. All the jewelry is sterling silver or 14-karat gold-filled.

Further, Serena wants her shop to be representative of her true sense of community. Customers have enjoyed a couple of pop-ups at her shop. In fact, she partnered with BeetTan and Glam Strands to offer a “Mom & Daughter Day,” where moms and their little princesses could come by and receive spray tans or get their hair tinseled.

Gratitude

She is grateful to her family and friends who have supported her entrepreneurial endeavors, including her sisters Melissa and Christina. Melissa’s marketing agency, MY Agency Savannah, handles the boutique’s marketing needs.

Serena’s biggest role models have always been her mom Agnes and her dad Paul; they instilled a strong work ethic in her.

Serena appreciates the warm welcome that she has received from the community. She is looking forward to bright days ahead.

“I am just so thankful,” she says.

Let’s look at some numbers:

• 59% of Americans have at least one chronic illness.

• 42% of Americans have more than one chronic illness

• 28% have three or more chronic illnesses.

• The average American takes four prescriptions per month and spends on average $1,300 per year on their prescriptions.

• On average, a person will lose 2-3 days of work per illness. Add all this up and, there is a lot of money lost.

Of course, prevention is the best way forward. But what happens if the proverbial horse has left the barn? Why should we improve our health when we already have chronic illness(es)?

Being Healthy Can Reduce Healthcare Costs

Having poor health can make you unproductive and limit your day-to-day activities. Being prescribed long-term medications can wipe out your savings and assets. Medicine, doctor’s visits, and hospitalization are expensive. Experiencing a devastating financial downfall from hospital bills can be scarier than the illness itself.

You can reduce your risk factors for various conditions and improve your health by following simple lifestyle choices.

Being Healthy Means Better Quality Time with Loved Ones

When you take control of your health, you will reap the benefits of more energy, less brain fog, and more endurance. Have your children help you cook a healthy dinner. This will give you more quality time. Play with your grandchildren or go for a walk with your spouse and children. Make it a family affair.

You Can be In Control of Your Health.

Genes are not our destiny. 95% of our health is in our hands with our daily choices. That is great news! It means we CAN control our destiny. It all begins with small changes that

compound on themselves to add up to great health.

So, what does that look like? We can start small. Walk more. The best thing about walking is it is free. Park further away in the parking lot. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Get up from your desk every hour and walk for two minutes. Aim for 10,000 steps a day. It may seem like a lot; however, it begins with your first step. Just do your best by doing a little more than the day before.

Aim for 3-5 cups of fruits and vegetables per day. Fruits and vegetables contain important fiber, vitamins and minerals that are needed for good health. Fiber also promotes gut health which is essential for overall health.

Avoid sugary beverages and drink more water. Hydration helps keep your metabolism running and is also key for cellular communication. So, drink your H2O.

All the above will add up to much better health. If you are ready to take it to the next level, working with a Nutrition Therapist can help you make great health gains. With targeted testing for gut health (for digestive issues) and food sensitivity testing or DNA testing to optimize your genes through nutrigenomic (nutrition and lifestyle) you can reverse chronic illness, reduce medication, and achieve optimal health.

In the long run you will reduce your medical expenses and increase your happiness. It has been said that a health person has a million dreams, and the sick person only has one.

Let’s move you to the healthiest you.

SAVANNAH CHILDREN’S THEATRE FOSTERS CREATIVITY IN KIDS

Kelie Miley, founder and artistic director of Savannah Children’s Theatre (SCT), says: “I think the arts enrich you in a way that nothing else does.” The non-profit organization has been an asset to the Coastal Empire for nearly 20 years, helping local children develop a love for the arts by embracing and developing their very own theatrical creativities.

Kelie has quite the noteworthy background in the world of the arts. “I grew up in community theatre, and I majored in theatre. I worked in children’s theatres in California, and I performed in shows for children,” Kelie says.

After moving back to the area in 1993, Kelie was employed at the City of Savannah Department of Cultural Affairs before she opened SCT.

Enrichment

The SCT mission is to inspire, educate and entertain children and families through the experience of live theatre, both on and off the stage. Kelie and her team enjoy doing just that.

“That drives me every day. I think kids learn to collaborate, think creatively and understand the human condition by playing other characters. Working with everyone is such a collaborative process— working with all kinds of art forms, learning lines, working on the different

problems in a play or exploring different time periods,” she says.

Whether singing, dancing, improv games or artistic projects, children are able to participate in a host of different activities as their creativity flourishes. The enriching program includes curriculumbased field trips.

“I love my work. I love reaching new kids and opening up the world of theatre to them. I love seeing the excitement in their eyes. I love watching them gain confidence and new skills,” Kelie says.

opening its doors in Pooler. Currently, children in grades 2 through 8 participate in the program.

As it is rapidly growing, Kelie knows that its expansion is inevitable. She is looking forward to inviting teens to be a part of it all in the near future. She is excited to see the new program grow so that it can offer all the same activities in Pooler that are done on the Savannah campus.

“My hope for next year is that we start running a program in Pooler that is comparable to what we have going on in Savannah. We’re hoping that it becomes a second campus for the theatre,” Kelie says.

The Pooler Program

After hoping to offer a theatrical program in Pooler for quite some time, Kelie was proud to roll out the program last summer. Many Pooler children had become involved in her program, often traveling to Savannah in order to participate.

“I have a lot of Pooler families that come to Savannah. I thought they’d like a theatre community. I talked to those families, and they were interested,” Kelie states.

The theatre has been grateful to be housed at Relentless Church since

Since its inception, the Pooler program has offered three theatrical productions that children have been able to take part in, including: Elf, 101 Dalmatians and Aladdin, Jr. The theatre will offer a weekend performance of Aladdin, Jr. May 12-14. Families are also able to sign up for summer camp, as SCT will be offering two two-week camp sessions. The first session will include a production of Frozen, which will be held June 5-16 with show dates June 16-18. The second camp, Finding Nemo, will be held July 10-21 with show dates July 21-23.

Kelie and the entire SCT team are excited about the theatre's growth in Pooler; they are even more thrilled to see how well the children have responded to it.

“ “ 28 www.PoolerMagazine.com | March/April 2023
I love reaching new kids and opening up the world of theatre to them. I love seeing the excitement in their eyes.

“They love it. Almost all of them respond very well. In Pooler, some of the kids are new to it, but you can see the joy on their faces; they found a passion. I think it’s an amazing, transformative experience for children, and I can't imagine spending my life any other way,” Kelie says.

Indeed, the Pooler community is truly embracing the program, and parents could not be happier. Many have asked for even more sessions to be offered.

“My Pooler parents and families have been great,” Kelie says.

Many parents have noticed the benefits of the program. A parent of a fourth-grader says, “It helps build their self-confidence. The staff is wonderful, and the teachers are knowledgeable actors who are gifted in working with children.”

Creativity Counts

Through the art of performance, children embrace the beauty of their own imagination and creativity, learn to work well with others, understand positive ways to handle conflict and even gain experience interacting with other cultures. The importance of the arts has become especially obvious over the past couple of decades.

“It is wonderful for children, especially within a world that can be so isolating. It brings them together. You cannot put on a play sitting by yourself,” she says.

While most technological advancements can be beneficial, various electronic devices, social media or other forms of communication and entertainment can become overwhelmingly prevalent in the lives of many young people. Kelie knows the tremendous difference that the arts can make.

“Long ago, before we could write things down, we told everyone stories.

That’s how we learned and how we kept our history. We’ve become good watchers of stories…but not good storytellers,” she says. When stories are acted out, it further builds verbal and physical skills that can positively impact children’s lives.

Appreciation

Kelie takes sincere pride in the dedicated team of professionals who work alongside her. She is thankful for their diligence and commitment regarding the theatre’s expansion into Pooler. She is grateful for the expertise of her talented theatrical instructors who have contributed to making the entire program a success.

“I have a very experienced and knowledgeable staff. They’re really good working with children. They are some of the most amazing people I’ve ever met. My teachers love the kids and love working in this art form just as much as I do. We’re very blessed,” Kelie says.

She also appreciates the founding board members, including Mayor Rebecca Benton, who championed the program’s efforts regarding its Pooler expansion.

Play a Part

Families are encouraged to take part in the program, whether allowing their children’s involvement or just coming out to watch a show. Kelie is confident that the program, which fosters the creative growth of children, can benefit their lives in ways unimaginable. ■

Summer camp registration opened up on February 15. Families are welcome to visit the SCT website for additional information at: savannahchildrenstheatre.org or call: (912) 238-9015.

FULL BLOOM SALON & DRY BAR

Full Bloom Salon & Dry Bar is an eco-luxe salon built on sustainability and elevated service. They are a community space, filled with passionate and evolving visionaries specializing in all thing’s hair and cosmetic beauty. Salon owner Hannah Sikes and her team of eight stylists offer salon services such as cut, color, blowouts and extensions as well as the dry bar wash, blowout and style.

As a full-service beauty destination, they do make up, brow waxing, smoothing services, weddings and other special events. Fun fact—they do the hair for Savannah’s hockey team the Ghost Pirates!

Social media outlets such as Instagram and Tik Tok definitely influence beauty trends, says Hannah: “Currently blondes are a trend. In fact, all colors and shades of brunettes, redheads or blondes, are very popular.”

Full Bloom & Dry Bar specializes in rich blonde colors and lush extensions for today’s long hair styles, keeping their clients in style and on point. Hannah says, “As our name reflects, our salon has grown and matured into a full-service, luxury beauty destination for our clients.”

Salon Owner

For Hannah, becoming a business owner was not the plan. “I didn’t think I would make a career in the beauty business. I started out with an attitude of ‘I’ll try it and figure it out as I go along,’” says Hannah,

who was working at Hustle & Blow Dry Bar in Savannah when the salon owner offered to sell her the business. “I was 20 years old and scared to death. I never imagined myself as a salon owner.”

But she took the leap and in November 2019, Hannah became the new owner of Hustle & Blow Dry Bar. She found that she liked being a business owner, “I enjoy being a leader, especially instructing and leading my team. That’s become very important to me.”

She enhanced and expanded the services at the Savannah salon but ultimately decided to change the location. In June 2022 she moved the salon to the Pooler location. “After moving we rebranded the salon and we have exceeded our expectations,” she says. “Being in Pooler has been great!”

Hometown Love

Hannah and her husband Dalton, who works at Gulfstream, married in October of

2022 and make their home in Springfield, GA, where Hannah was born and raised. For fun, “We are both very family orientated so we hang out with our families a lot.” Moving the salon from Savannah to Pooler has worked out wonderfully: “It’s important to me to be here,” says Hannah. “My clients are people I have known forever and I love being close to my hometown and family. This is my community.”

As to the future, Hannah says Pooler’s explosive growth has been beneficial for her business. “I didn’t think we would grow so quickly and with all the potential here I see us in a bigger space in five years.”

But for now, she and her team are happy to be in their lovely light filled salon, making their clients look and feel beautiful every day.

Whether you are looking for a blowout, a new look, a wedding package or that perfect stop to kick start your Girls’ Night Out or Bachelorette Party weekend, give Full Bloom Salon & Dry Bar a call!

ESTELLE RAMOS: Cultivating Young Women Purposefully

In her role with Girls of Purpose, Inc., Estelle Ramos helps guide young women through faith-based enrichment programs to build character and confidence.

Coretta Scott King once said, “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members, a heart of grace, and a soul generated by love.”

Estelle Ramos lives these words every day in her life and work.

Founder and Executive Director of Girls of Purpose, Inc., Ramos—through the Girls of Purpose Organization—has been impacting others by creating a safe space for our young girls in Chatham County and surrounding areas to discover their purpose.

Inspiration

The need for a mentor in Ramos’ life as a child sparked her passion for Girls of Purpose. Further, Ramos noted, “girls are struggling with a lack of confidence, and self-motivation, to enter into spaces for which they have no exposure.”

34 www.PoolerMagazine.com | March/April 2023

Girls of Purpose equips and empowers young girls to contribute positively to their communities and the world at large.

Girls today face several challenges affecting their lives, including bullying, self-esteem issues, friend and peer pressure, insufficient sleep, loneliness, social pressure, teen pregnancy, and changes in family dynamics.

“We are partnering with our participant’s parents by providing a safe space for young girls to thrive while we teach them values and biblical principles to live by,” Ramos explained. “Learning to respect themselves, they will also be able to respect others.”

It is a place that gives a sense of belonging, strength, and well-being to anyone who walks through its doors.

Girls of Purpose provides a faith-based enrichment program for girls ages 8 to 12. There are currently 27 girls enrolled in the program, which aims to establish self-esteem and character development

in adolescent girls so they discover the identity Christ gave them.

Ramos was born and raised in South Carolina and then moved to California for several years before her family relocated back to the South in 2016. At that time, she planted the seed for an organization

Building the Community

Since forming a 501(c)3 organization as a nonprofit, she has maintained contact with the community and shared Girls of Purpose, Inc.’s mission with others.

“I just believed God gave me a hunger and a thirst to do more,” she said. “Our youth need us, and I longed for these young girls to be poured into—this is the result of me just doing my part.”

that could grow with young girls in need and a surrounding community that could nurture it.

In 2018, after she had gotten accustomed to the area, Ramos began moving forward with what God had placed in her heart and started the nonprofit organization she envisioned. She founded the organization to empower young girls to be confident, self-sufficient, and faithful.

During the Saturday sessions, there are a variety of activities for the girls. These activities include prayer, biblebased lessons, group discussions, writing exercises, team-building activities, life skills, training in nutrition education, and cooking lessons.

In addition, counselors are available for young girls who need assistance with issues such as bullying, family difficulties, anxiety, and other problems they may experience as they navigate the world.

Ramos’ core values align with the organization’s: “To love God, treat others

as I would like to be treated, and serve with integrity and respect.”

During Girls of Purpose, the girls enjoy themselves in a suitable environment where they can make friends, develop and sustain new relationships, and encourage each other. With fun teambuilding activities, Girls of Purpose provides girls with a healthy outlet for emotional and physical growth. The participants develop life skills and pursue their dreams through empowering activities that enable them to reach their full potential. Girls can gain self-confidence, learn communication and problem-solving skills, build leadership experience, and make meaningful connections with others.

The program also teaches how to cultivate inner beauty, strength, resilience, and confidence to cope with everyday stress. Upon completion, the students are

connections with each other and make a positive impact on their communities. As a bonus, adults in their communities see firsthand how these girls grow into strong young ladies.

“It’s so amazing to see the girls from when they came into the program to where they are now,” Ramos said. “How the girls are willing to get up in front of a group and give a speech or talk about themselves is so wonderful.”

When Ramos is not mentoring, her day-to-day activities include connecting and meeting with community partners, planning biweekly sessions, developing funding strategies, and assisting with meeting the needs of our neighbors without walls.

Community is the focus of Girls of Purpose. The program emphasizes collaboration, respect, and trust among its students. The organization also focuses on giving back to the community through volunteering.

Local Support

The encouragement and assistance of the local community enabled participants in Girls of Purpose to achieve feats they could never have imagined. Through the support of local businesses, civic organizations, and private donations, they can achieve big dreams, including organizing an annual gala.

In addition to celebrating Girls of Purpose’s accomplishments in the past year, the gala event is an inspiring reminder of what we can achieve when everyone works together.

At the event, participants from the organization can share their stories and experiences with other attendees, which helps create a sense of community and support.

The biggest reward of this extraordinary Girls of Purpose event is seeing how the young girls have grown into empowered individuals living well, wisely, and with wisdom, fulfilling their dreams.

Girls of Purpose, Inc. is grateful to every investor in the community, including the many local businesses that contribute to the organization, which is committed to creating a world where young girls can reach and realize their full potential without fear or stigma.

In addition, Ramos expresses gratitude to her husband, Frank, her family, the Girls of Purpose board members, Pastor Corey and Tomekia Williams, Hope City

Church, Pastor Bryan Parrish, Pooler Baptist Church, and the Southbridge Community.

Girls of Purpose, Inc. is worthy of your partnership as they make a difference in the Pooler Community today and well into our future.

In closing, Ramos reflected on the following belief, “God cares about everything concerning girls of purpose and what he has called us to do in this community.”

“There is a theme of health and wellness—self-care. We’re trying to help people find their best selves,” Sunny Clough states. Sunny is the owner of both Down Home CrossFit and Pooler Day Spa. The accomplished woman in business is a wife and mother of two little ones, so she appreciates the beauty of achieving a good balance in everyday life.

“When people take time to take care of themselves, it can feel like a selfish thing to do. They give and give to all the different avenues (family, job, education), but they never really give back to themselves … ‘You can’t pour from an empty cup.’ Having that good balance empowers them; then, they can be there for all the people they love. When we feel like we’re at our best, it’s motivating; it makes our lives better,” she says.

After being in the fitness industry for quite some time, Sunny opened the doors of Down Home CrossFit in March 2015. CrossFit’s High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) has helped many people meet their fitness goals. The unique methodology has proved to be a successful type of physical training for countless individuals – firefighters, police officers, those serving in the military or just about anyone who appreciates a good, full-body workout.

Sunny, however, decided not to stop just in the fitness arena. She wholeheartedly believed that real selfcare encompassed so much more. Hence, she purchased Pooler Day Spa from its previous owner in January 2021.

“When that avenue opened up, we saw how well it correlated with the business we already had while allowing us to further our passion for helping people. It really fits well because the concept is so different – you have the gym with its loud music, weights and [workouts], and then you have the spa with its peacefulness and relaxation. It all ties in well together with finding that balance,” she says.

Down Home CrossFit

Founded by Greg Glassman, CrossFit came on the scene over two decades ago. Glassman wanted to find more effective alternatives to traditional fitness methods. CrossFit incorporated principles from various fitness categories, including: HIIT cardio, Olympic weightlifting, powerlifting, plyometrics, calisthenics and gymnastics (to

name a few). The concept became popular with police officers, firefighters and the military due to the comprehensiveness of the workouts; the hard-working community leaders have found great reward in the overall conditioning.

“It has taken over the way they go about their fitness training. It is a successful way to train without being super taxing on the body. It helps individuals be functionally prepared to handle whatever they have to deal with on a daily basis,” Sunny states.

The Down Home Advantage

The Down Home family takes sincere pride in what they do; they constantly strive to support the unique fitness goals of their customers.

“Because we are truly a local, small mom-and-pop shop, you get a lot more individual attention versus the different franchises. You get a custom-tailored experience - authentic and hands-on. You’re part of a community,” Sunny says.

Most of Sunny’s coaches approached her about being a Down Home trainer after experiencing the benefits of CrossFit in their own lives. It is a testament to their commitment and love for what they do.

“The passion of our CrossFit coaches can’t be understated. They coach from the heart while helping others navigate the workouts. Most of them are in it because it changed

their lives, and they want to give back. They believe in the method, the community and the workouts,” she says.

You Can Do It

There are many myths regarding CrossFit, namely the belief that an individual has to be very physically fit in order to endure a workout. The conditioning can be challenging. But, hey, it is a workout. The supportive team, however, is there every step of the way to help individuals gain comfortability and find the best pace for themselves.

The beauty of CrossFit is its flexibility and individual approach; workouts can be made as hard or as moderate as possible. Each workout typically lasts about an hour, which includes a warm up.

“You can do the classes at your own pace. The coaches help you through it. There is truly a good starting point for everybody. Just come in. Majority of CrossFitters had no experience when they first started. They were nervous and felt uncoordinated. If you have never lifted a weight or if you feel that you don’t know what you’re doing, that is okay! You are the person CrossFit was made for. You do have it within you to do something that’s successful,” Sunny states.

Pooler Day Spa

Sunny takes pride in the team of professionals at the spa. The ladies are passionate about what they do, while being knowledgeable about their craft. Each customer’s health and wellness is utterly important to them. Sunny appreciates the consistency of her staff, as they provide each customer with a unique experience.

“It’s about the people you meet the moment you walk in the door. It’s about the way you’re greeted by the front desk and by your provider. They are dedicated to the people that come in, and they love what they do. Their focus is always on you,” she remarks.

Pressing Pause

Almost anyone can appreciate the benefit of pressing the pause button on the busyness of life – taking a little time out for some much needed relaxation. Customers are thrilled to be able to leave the real world outside of the spa doors while they have their very own moment.

DOWN HOME CROSSFIT & POOLER DAY SPA: 38 www.PoolerMagazine.com | March/April 2023

PEOPLE ARE OUR PASSION!

“It’s very relaxing and soothing when you walk through those doors; it’s like a weight is lifted. It’s a beautiful feeling to be able to leave the world outside. You can just be in the moment—no phone, no work, no questions—you can just ‘be,’” she says.

Spa Care Services

The spa offers a variety of services which utilize an array of organic products. Popular services include: massages, facials and waxes. Whether providing a light, therapeutic massage or a firm, deep tissue one, the staff is skilled in targeting just the right area that will bring relief to their clients. Various facials are also offered, including deep pore cleansing facials or those designed to address more indepth skin care concerns; the competent estheticians are happy to help each person with their skin care needs. In addition, waxing services are popular - Brazilian waxes and beyond. The estheticians are able to do nearly any service the spa offers.

“They do have their individual niches, but you can book almost anything with them as long as it’s within their scope,” Sunny says.

Customers are able to purchase spa packages; these are “expertly designed packages that include massage and facial options paired with unique add-ons.” Such gifts will make almost any occasion memorable—birthdays, anniversaries or baby showers.

The team enjoys offering great goodies to their customers. On Mondays, or “Massage Mondays,” customers can participate in a giveaway for an add-on for any of the massage services. Wednesdays are “Wax Wednesdays,” where customers receive discounts on wax services. Fridays are “Facial Fridays,” and customers enjoy great offers on facials. Even more, Down Home members always receive 10% off of all spa services.

Q&A WITH THE STAFF AT POOLER DAY SPA

Sunny knows that, like Down Home CrossFit, Pooler Day Spa is only as great as its phenomenal staff. Here is what some of the spa team has to say:

SYDNEY

What made you want to help people in this way? I wanted to reach people in a holistic, healing way. I found that, personally, through massage therapy.

Why are you so passionate about what you do?

I want to give my clients a place to truly let go and find relaxation. Massage therapy helped me heal physically and emotionally. I want to give my clients that same kind of healing.

KAYLA

What is so beneficial about the services the spa provides?

“We focus on our client’s problem areas and help them escape life’s demands for a while. It’s important to reset and relax so that the body can heal.”

What is your specialization?

I have a background in neuromuscular massage therapy; I like giving therapeutic and sports massages with hot stones and cupping. I feel that improving a client’s range of motion gives them the best benefit in massage therapy.

KATE

What makes your spa so beautifully unique? The team—everyone is so helpful. I absolutely love the team that I work with!

Why is your job so important to you?

I love helping people feel comfortable and confident in their own skin. I love enhancing the beauty that God gave them.

Brittni is a former educator and found herself giving financial advice to her high school students. This advice soon turned into her platform— Know Your Numbers.

Brittni now travels throughout Chatham and neighboring counties to teach young teens about the importance of financial education.

Local Businesses are a Saving Grace for the With Love Project

Local businesses are the backbone of our economy, they were also the saving grace to our local families through Gilliard and Company’s With Love Project this past Christmas.

The With Love Project is a program designed to support at-risk families under Child Protective Services Cases. Support comes in many forms such as relief of financial burdens or the donation of toys during the holiday season.

In our own backyard, 38% of children live in a single-parent household, 27% of caregivers lack secure employment, and two out of 10 minors live in poverty. These are the circumstances that lead to 8,690 Child Protective Service calls with substantiated maltreatment cases out of 121,000 calls made to the Georgia Division of Family and Social Services.

In 2022, Gilliard and Company partnered with local businesses during the holiday season with one goal in mind, “sustaining vulnerable families in 2023.”

The inaugural Gala was made possible entirely with donations. Our toy drive served 64 local children with donated toys and food for the holiday party for families was also donated.

In kind donations made nearly all of our events possible!

Most recent studies have shown that 75% of consumers prefer to support business that gives back to the community. These local businesses set the tone for more community involvement in the upcoming year.

“We cannot do what do today if it weren’t for the support of our local businesses stepping up for our families and children. Through their donations and efforts, children stayed safe with their loved ones. We will continue to work with these leaders throughout 2023 and hopefully, many more who will take a stand with us for foster care awareness” says Whitney Gilliard, CEO and Founder of this local foster care organization.

CATHERINE GRANT: Leaving Things Better Than She Found Them

44 www.PoolerMagazine.com | March/April 2023

atherine Grant, founder and CEO of ExperCARE, is changing the way healthcare is done in the greater Savannah area. She has a mind for seeing what could be and taking the steps to make it happen.

“I love medicine because I love solving complex problems,” Catherine says. “I love the ability to problem solve, apply what I know, understand people and develop relationships, and then try to leave things better than I found them.”

Beginnings in Medicine

Catherine started college at Armstrong Atlantic State University in 1999 with the plan to attend medical school, but when she discovered the physician assistant (PA) field, she knew that was what she wanted to do. The career path allowed her to work in a variety of specialties instead of a single focus and provided the work-life balance for a future family.

She attended South University, where she received her Bachelor of Science in Physician Assistant Studies and then went onto The Medical University of South Carolina and graduated with honors with a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies.

After working as a PA in multiple —including plastic and reconstructive surgery, orthopedic surgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation and moonlighting in urgent care—Catherine knew she wanted to do things differently. She envisioned a customer-focused model and refused to settle for mediocrity.

“Working in the healthcare system is what inspired me to start my own business,” Catherine says. “I’ve never done well in an environment that was just aiming to be a seven.”

The Growth of ExperCARE

In June 2009, Catherine and her partner opened the first location of ExperCARE in Richmond Hill under the original business name—The Urgent Care Center of Richmond Hill.

“Our initial tagline was about providing access to high quality health care close to home,” Catherine says. “While a lot has changed with the business in almost 14 years, I have to say that primary mission still stands.”

Their community-focused approach to care with on-demand availability proved to be popular with patients in Richmond Hill. The clinic quickly expanded its services beyond urgent care to include walk-in routine care and occupational health.

With rave reviews coming from the Richmond Hill location, it was only a matter of time before people in Savannah began asking Catherine when there would be a location closer to their home.

In 2016, that idea became a reality with the opening of the Mall Boulevard location of ExperCARE in Savannah. In 2020, they opened a downtown Savannah location and in 2022 added a fourth location in Pooler. Their growth continues with locations in Statesboro, Hinesville and Rincon opening later this year.

“With the growth in Pooler and how many people are flocking to the area, we knew it was going to be important for us to have a presence there because there’s nothing like ExperCARE there,” Catherine says. “I’m pretty grateful for the ability to continue to grow at the pace we have while retaining the things that people love about ExperCARE.”

The ExperCARE Experience

ExperCARE’s mission was born out of a rejection of the cookie-cutter approach to care and an emphasis on creating a patient-first experience enhanced by technology.

“Consumer desires are changing. People don’t want to have to take off from work to go to the doctor,” Catherine says. “They want to be able to go before or after work or on the weekends. They want to live life on their terms.”

Patients need an appointment to visit ExperCARE, and all four locations are open seven days a week to accommodate busy schedules. ExperCARE is in network with most insurance but also offers affordable, transparent self-pay rates.

“I think people choose ExperCARE because we are so focused on how we make people feel. Our aim is for them to leave and say, ‘I’d be crazy to go anywhere else,’” Catherine says.

ExperCARE went above and beyond during the COVID-19 pandemic. They were one of the first providers to offer COVID testing in the area and worked hard to keep a consistent supply of tests and PPE even through supply shortages. Catherine takes pride in her team’s performance and dedication to the community during those uncertain times.

“I’m proud of my team’s ability to adapt and navigate in a dynamic, ever-changing environment and seeing my team step up and continue to do whatever it takes,” Catherine says.

Heart of a Leader

Catherine taught future PAs at South University for several years. Although she no longer teaches there, she has had the

pleasure of having some former students work at ExperCARE as part of their professional journey.

“Seeing smart, eager minds come together and being able to pour into them as they learn and grow is just one of the most enjoyable things I’ve done,” Catherine says. “Seeing them years later practicing medicine and changing lives and thinking you maybe even had the smallest part in that is really cool.”

From nine employees at the start to approximately 70 today, Catherine has built a team that reflects the ExperCARE values both personally and professionally.

“For any position, it’s really looking at our culture and the DNA of our organization. Our organizational values are integrity, compassion, enthusiasm, leadership and teamwork,” Catherine says. “Those values are that unchanging pillar to our overall culture.”

She places a high value on professional development with an onboarding process that includes some required reading of books about leadership, and twice-yearly team gatherings build morale among the staff.

“It’s all about really getting to know the people you work with and understanding what their goals are and how we can help them get there,” Catherine says. “Sometimes that’s going to be in our organization. Sometimes we’re a stepping stone to a future goal. I think the more you can embrace that and really serve them, they will continue to serve our patients, their families and the community.”

Serving the Community

Catherine makes a difference in her community through her involvement in organizations like United Way of the Coastal Empire, where she is a member of the Board of Directors and has been recognized as part of the organization’s Women Who Rule campaign. She is also a board member of the Richmond Hill Downtown Development Authority, forging public-private partnerships to enhance the area’s economy.

Because of the drive and passion that she puts behind the causes she cares about, Catherine is a prolific fundraiser. In 2017, she chaired the Bryan County United Way annual campaign and shattered their fundraising record. She has also raised more than $63,000 for Alzheimer’s research as a participant in the Alzheimer’s Association Dancing Stars of Coastal Georgia in 2015.

She has continued to be involved with Dancing Stars of Coastal Georgia as a committee member, partner and as a pro dancer.

Outside of work, Catherine enjoys spending time with her husband and three daughters. She and her family attend Compassion Christian Church, and her faith drives her decisionmaking process in choosing causes to be involved with and her philosophy in patient care.

Looking to the Future

As ExperCARE continues to grow, so too does Catherine’s motivation to make an impact on the healthcare industry as an entrepreneur.

“I get motivated when I see how broken the healthcare system is,” Catherine says. “There’s so much room for improvement. It just takes people who know the system to think outside the box and be willing to innovate and make it better.” ■

LISA SCARBROUGH TO THE RESCUE

Lisa Scarbrough is the founder and director of Coastal Pet Rescue, a non-profit animal rescue organization 501(c)(3) dedicated to saving the lives of homeless, abused and neglected dogs and cats in Savannah and surrounding areas.

Founded in February 2003, Coastal Pet Rescue has changed the lives of countless homeless pets in Chatham, Bryan and Effingham counties through its foster home program and small capacity shelter, Camp Pawsawhile Retreat. As director of Coastal Pet Rescue, Lisa serves as Chief Executive of the Executive Board.

She has dedicated herself selflessly to Coastal Pet Rescue and on any given day she can be found transporting animals from surgery, picking up a rescue, conducting an intake or handling a prospective adoption meet and greet. Lisa is a “paws on the ground” manager, and says “There is no typical day because we never have the same day twice, which is good and also scary!”

Early Rescues

Caring for animals “Is just how I was raised,” says Lisa, “My Dad showed me by example and his teachings have transitioned over to me and stayed close to my heart.”

The family moved to Tybee Island when Lisa was 12 years old and she grew

up helping out at the family business— Lazaretto Creek Marina and Captain Mike’s Dolphin Tours.

The family’s first rescue pet was Peaches, a terrier mix dog “ who literally ran into our house,” says Lisa, who was in second grade at the time, “and we couldn’t say no so she stayed and promptly had nine puppies.”

In sixth grade Lisa found a puppy in the Crab Shack restaurant dumpster. “We were going to keep the ‘dumpster puppy’ for one week. Of course that didn’t last and we kept her for 14 years.”

Lisa says it was a wonderful childhood and that she inherited her work ethic from her parents Mike and Iris. “Mom, who I am named for, worked at Southern Bell for 27 years. She was a great Mom. I learned by watching both her and my Dad work hard every day.”

Lisa was a First Mate while studying for her Captain's License and looked into attending the Coast Guard Academy but ultimately went to college to pursue her dream of being a National Geographic

50 www.PoolerMagazine.com | March/April 2023

Society photojournalist. It was the beginning of the personal computer era and after graduation from Georgia Southern she became a web developer.

But there were still animals in need.

Coastal Pet Rescue

Coastal Pet Rescue recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. Lisa says, “I had no intention to do this for 20 years. It started when I kept bringing homeless pets I found into the vet. I was paying for their care out of my pocket and my vet, Dr. Pam Fandrich, said I should do this as a nonprofit. It started because I wanted to help the animals I was finding and here is where we have ended up.”

Starting a new organization also includes fundraising and public relations. “I am actually an introvert but running a nonprofit means you have to get in front of people so I have had to work hard on that. My female mentors have been a huge help,” says Lisa, “The eWomen Network—Marjorie Young from Carriage Trade Public Relations who taught me so much, Bunny Ware, who helped me build up my comfort zone—they were all very supportive of me.”

While it is rewarding, the work also remains stubbornly difficult. Lisa says, “I absolutely love working with animals and I know I have done the best I can do but I still have anxiety over all the problems people throw at us on any day. Our resources are finite and we can’t create more space, especially during kitten season.”

Coastal Pet Rescue works with other rescue organizations to provide referrals. “No one organization can do it all,” says Lisa.

Family & Work Balance

Although she was working around the clock with Coastal Pet Rescue Lisa says, “My trajectory changed when my son Ian was born.” She loved being a new mom but early on she saw he wasn’t following the standard milestones. Ian was diagnosed as developmentally delayed at nine months old and diagnosed on the autism spectrum at 18 months old.

Lisa had moved to Effingham in 2009, which has been a good fit for her and Ian. “I was advised to keep him in the Effingham school system and today he thrives out here. It is a safe environment where I don’t have to worry about my son. We love it here.”

Being a single parent, especially with a child who needed much support, meant Lisa had to make work/life changes. “I had

been going out in the evening for speaking engagements to get support for the rescue but there wasn’t any child care where I was going and my son had therapy three times a week. He had become my primary focus and I really had to rely on others to carry the rescue.”

She says the rescue staff has been able to fill in the gaps and that the majority are women who understand the challenges. “Luckily I have trained enough people so that it is not necessary that I am there every minute of the day. As a single mom with a son on the autism spectrum, I need flexibility. At the rescue I have back up available for me. If I need to be elsewhere, the rescue can function.”

Today Ian and Coastal Pet Rescue are both doing great and Lisa is able to devote time to another passion- scouting.

Boy Scouts of America

Although Ian was involved with several activities, as soon as he was old enough Lisa signed him up for Boy Scouts. Scouting proved to be beneficial for Ian and Lisa

Lisa is also the Council STEM Chair at Coastal Georgia Council, BSA. STEM— Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics—is part of an initiative the Boy Scouts of America has taken on to encourage the natural curiosity of youth members and their sense of wonder about these fields.

Lisa says scouting, and just being outdoors, is her family’s fun time. “We found early on getting outside works great for my son and I. We really enjoy camping and touring battlefields because Ian loves historical places, and I enjoy helping others experience these places for the first time.”

They are currently hosting an exchange student from Spain and have enjoyed showing him the sights. She says, “That's the down time, being outside on a trail, where it’s peaceful. I like doing the nature loop at Skidaway but I have all the park passes and we go all over. Ultimately camping is my best recharge time.”

both. She says “At the time there were a lot of challenges and scouting gave me a place to have that support as a mom that I didn't have before. I found my people at Scouts.”

She never saw herself as a Scoutmaster, preferring the behind the scenes organizational work, but when she was asked to step in as Scoutmaster for the allgirls Troop 665G Rincon last year she said she was “both honored and terrified.”

Today the troop consists of eight girls, with three more joining at the end of the month, and at their most recent court of honor they earned over 50 combined awards and have performed nearly 90 hours combined community service.

“I am so proud of these girls and it has been more rewarding than I could have imagined,” says Lisa.

Twenty Years

“I have the same birthday as Coastal Pet Rescue, which just turned 20, and I turned 44. I had honestly hoped that in 20 years I would have been retired from rescue because it wasn't needed anymore. But that’s not the case, “ says Lisa.

“The work can be heartbreaking and difficult, especially when dealing with people, and it has taken an emotional toll.” But she says “Ian is now 12 years old and doing so much better and I love what I do for the animals. It really has been an incredible journey and I look forward to the next 20 years. I can’t wait to see what’s next!” ■

Uncompromising on Quality and Integrity

When Jamie Pratt founded Patriot Pros Roofing in 2020 together with her husband Matthew, there were two values they knew they would never compromise—quality and integrity.

After several years of working for other roofing companies, they knew they wanted to do things differently. They took a leap of faith and went out on their own. They designed their company logo had it installed on their trucks and yard signs for job sites and started gaining business through word of mouth. “Working for ourselves is much better,” Jamie says.

They vowed not to sell customers a product they didn’t need and to respect the hard work of their crew by paying promptly and in full. By operating their own company from start to finish, they are able to do work that they believe in.

Patriot Pros Roofing Services

In addition to expert roofing services, Patriot Pros Roofing offers siding, windows, doors, gutters and fencing services as well. This allows the team to give their attention to detail and quality to their customers’ other home renovation needs and offers homeowners one source to call whenever they have a project that needs to be done.

Patriot Pros is licensed and insured in both Georgia and South Carolina and is a proud member of the Georgia Roofing Contractors Association.

A Woman of Many Skills

While Jamie has prior experience in law enforcement, property management, medical and accounting, she has done construction her whole life. Having put herself through college, she now handles the day-to-day operations of Patriot Pros Roofing. She assists the homeowner through the insurance process and is the project manger start to finish. She physically inspects all roofs, gets the materials needed to complete the job, and she gives the homeowner piece of mind while the project is under way.

Projects from drywall to framing have never fazed her. She has developed a strong work ethic over the years, and built her experience through on-the-job training. She’s frequently on job sites from 7 am until the work is done each day.

Thriving as a Woman in a MaleDominated Field

It’s not always easy being a woman in a male-dominated field, but Jamie doesn’t let

that bother her. “You have to have a knack for it, because it’s tough. Sometimes I get looks from people who are expecting to see a man,” Jamie says.

She’s been an influence on other women in the construction industry, and offers support wherever she can by being active in the business community. She is the Vice President of the Downtown Professionals chapter of Business Networking International and a member of the Greater Pooler Area Chamber of Commerce.

“We all need each other to get to where we’re going,” Jamie says.

Connecting with Customers

Connecting with customers is another area where Jamie excels. Through jobs she’s worked, she has discovered serendipitous connections between people, and these connections have helped her forge relationships both personal and professional.

“When I work, I know I’m in a place for a reason. I really enjoy making customers happy,” Jamie says.

Jamie loves helping people make the right decision on their biggest investment: their homes. She keeps customers up-todate on the status of their projects by taking before, in progress and after photos, and alerts them if they see something else that requires attention.

When Jamie isn’t working, she enjoys spending time with her family, watching movies, and boating. When the weather is nice on a weekend, you can find her and Matthew riding their motorcycles on their way to a leisurely breakfast in Savannah.

Q & A WITH BUSINESS WOMEN WHO ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY

The National Women’s Business Council reports that women-owned businesses “contribute substantially to entrepreneurship in the United States.” 42% of all U.S. businesses are owned by women (13 million) and employ more than 9.4 million workers. Women are three percentage points more likely to start a business than men.

Here we celebrate women in our community who are making a name for themselves while lifting up others in the process.

What has been the most challenging in running your business?

The most challenging part has been managing growth. We have experienced tremendous growth and that comes with its own set of challenges from hiring to internal process scaling.

What has been the most rewarding part of running your business?

Marketing has always been my passion and it is such a joy to be able to share what I know with small businesses to help them grow.

What advice would you give other female entrepreneurs?

My advice is to listen to your gut. If you feel you have a great idea, go for it. You can never lose. Surround yourself with people who you admire and who have a positive outlook.

Who are your greatest cheerleaders?

My husband, Morris, is my greatest supporter. He is honest with me and gives me the best advice. He knows me well and knows when I am not following my vision. He is not afraid to tell me when I am getting off track. It is a blessing to have him by my side.

Branding. Building a unique identity that accurately reflects your business can be difficult. Crafting the right branding to properly convey your values and mission requires significant time, effort, and thought.

What has been the most rewarding part of running your business?

An incredibly fulfilling aspect of running the Chamber has been the opportunity to get to know each and every one of our members. They have truly made us who we are today, and there is no greater reward than having their trust and belief in what we do!

What advice would you give other female entrepreneurs?

It is important to hold yourself accountable in order to reach your goals. Surround yourself with an incredible support system of mentors who can provide valuable guidance and advice on the journey ahead. Women must also learn to believe in themselves —self-confidence is key when taking risks and pushing through roadblocks that inevitably come your way. Taking the leap into entrepreneurship may seem intimidating but it can be incredibly rewarding in the long run. Reach for the stars and keep moving forward!

Who are your greatest cheerleaders?

I’m so thankful for all of my cheerleaders. The Chamber Team, for sure. They help me create positive change. My family’s continuous support has been instrumental in allowing me to leave a lasting legacy which I am proud to pass down through generations. Lastly, I have tremendous appreciation for our community whose success means everything to entrepreneurs like myself!

Battling over the counter hearing aids and online sales; proving sometimes that our degrees matter and you sometimes need medical treatment for hearing loss; we are not just sales people. I am here to help in any way I can.

What has been the most rewarding part of running your business? When patients come in and thank me for helping them hear or tell me about all the little things they did not realize they were missing out on or have not realized they were not hearing well.

What advice would you give other female entrepreneurs?

I think it is hard sometimes being a female with a doctorate, sometimes it feels like people do not always respect you, but when you have a great support team around you, it really helps. AHAS is a female-run department and we all work really hard to support each other every day with new ideas and staying on top of the shifting hearing landscape.

What has been the most challenging in running your business? The most challenging obstacle in operating a non-profit focusing on the foster care system is curating consistent funding. Everyday it’s an advocacy challenge to encourage support for a demographic that faces tragic statistics.

What has been the most rewarding part of running your business?

I get to meet people with fascinating stories and backgrounds. Every day I get to meet a young adult in foster care, and donors from our community who hold invaluable stories of their overcoming. The lives introduced to me are a constant reminder of why we do what we do.

What advice would you give other female entrepreneurs?

Give each other a chance. Women are known to be the support for everyone and when it comes to our own leadership, many times we lean on our own support within ourselves,. I have made it much further than what I imagined through leaning on other women who know or are better at things that I don’t know.

Who are your greatest cheerleaders?

My son is the first. His early understanding of the importance of helping others has truly created compassion for me in my hardest days. He has given me so much hope throughout the years, always giving me a hug and a kiss when I am stressed.

Also, my entire family consisting of my foster parents and foster sister have been the backbone of what I do. Gilliard and Company’s Executive Board, Bob Klusmeier, Antwan Lang, Derek Horne, and Paul Stephens have been nothing short of delivering exemplary guidance to move our mission forward. What has been the most challenging in running your business? Learning how to lead & motivate other people on the team has been the most challenging aspect of running a business.

What has been the most rewarding part of running your business? Watching others reach their goals through real estate is my passion.

What advice would you give other female entrepreneurs?

Oh, there is so much I could say! Probably the most important advice is to remain your authentic self! Don’t let opportunity control your loyalty or your integrity. You can be both successful and authentic at the same time.

At one time or another successful women will run into the hurdles of being in male dominated roles. Know your worth, stand tall and remember that you have earned the right to be where you are.

It can be lonely at the top. Find a good mentor/coach and a great support team that encourages you to be your very best.

Self care is important. It’s OK to make an appointment with yourself and keep it. Keep your emotions between the lines. No matter what is going on, check your emotions at the door when you step into a professional setting.

Be consistent. Time on task beats talent everyday. We must get comfortable doing the mundane tasks that it takes to succeed too. Every step needed isn’t always glamorous.

Who are your greatest cheerleaders?

I am lucky enough to have an amazing husband, a great group of core friendships & an amazing real estate team who all are very supportive! I don’t know what I’d do without them.

What has been the most challenging in running your business?

I have been most challenged in running my business just by the subject itself. 4 the Jewel N U provides resources tailored to individual needs as it relates to culturally responsive services to children, youth, and families who have been exposed to domestic violence.

What has been the most rewarding part of running your business?

The most rewarding part of running my non-profit business is the ability to partner with like-minded individuals and organizations within our community to promote a non-violent, non-threaten environment to serve individuals in our community and surrounding areas.

What advice would you give other female entrepreneurs?

By far the most important advice is to leave all your emotions off the table. Utilize the services of professional agencies such as United Way, or the Small Business Association. They are equipped to provide you with the proper business structure and resources needed for success. Keep an open mind, do not be afraid to make changes, and believe in your “why.” Why, you believe your business will be successful?

Never be afraid to admit your mistakes.

Who are your greatest cheerleaders?

The greatest cheerleader on my team is me, cheering for the unsung heroes – praising them, thanking them, and congratulating them on their wins, no matter how small or large.

My board members are remarkably successful, and they make things look so easy. Letting the triumphs of those in my organization inspire and remind me of what I want for me and the individuals we serve creates the will to continue to cheer for others.

My board members and remarkably close business associates reminded me of my purpose and encouraged me to believe in me for me. They reminded me to stay focused, speak evil of no one, get healthy in my mind, body, and spirit. They never stopped cheering for me. I am not what happened to me, I am a servant created to serve the jewel in each of you.

What has been the most challenging in running your business?

The most complex factor in establishing, building and maintaining businesses would be having a balance. It is so easy to fall into a routine of working that one could forget to actually indulge in a break ever so often.

What has been the most rewarding part of running your business?

Contrary to my last question, being able to visually see the clients happy definitely makes the impact worthwhile. Nothing compares to the satisfaction in the person’s eyes when their ideation is brought to fruition.

What advice would you give other female entrepreneurs?

You can do it. No matter what, you can do it. Historically, we have been impacted at a totally disadvantaged rate and we’re still here, thriving and surviving. Do not give in based on the fact of obstacles and trials, those will occur. However, you must keep going, not only for yourself but for those that are watching you that you don’t even realize. When times get rough, don’t forget to breathe and lean on your team, and if you don’t have a team - now is the time to construct one. You can do it. I believe in you.

Who are your greatest cheerleaders?

My cheerleaders would have to be my tribe of my closest friends, who have inevitably turned into family members, as well as those in my church. Without my First Tab Pastor and family, I just cannot imagine where I would be.

Investing in people. In today’s strange economic times finding, hiring, and retaining employees has been our biggest challenge. But, that said, we love finding the “gems” and building a real core team that focuses on giving great customer service – which is key to sustaining any business.

Be willing to take risks but don’t be reckless. Also, invest in your community and give back. This is so important! Currently I have the pleasure of serving as Treasurer on the Board of Directors of the Greater Pooler Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Bureau and helping the Chamber support other businesses in our community.

Who are your greatest cheerleaders?

My husband and partner David. He is always very supportive and quick to tell everyone that I am the genius and he “carries the heavy boxes”! We are fortunate that we both have different skills sets that work well together.
