I
sn’t it amazing how life evolves? We are celebrating the 13th Anniversary of Pooler Magazine and it is my first official issue as owner and publisher. When the opportunity to take the reins presented itself several months ago, it was a no brainer for me. I’ve always had a passion for magazines. As a kid, I would cut out pages from my favorite magazines–categorizing and organizing the cutouts into folders of “best advertisement,” “favorite headline,” “favorite layout,” “best story,” etc. I was so fascinated with layout and ads. I guess that was also an early glimpse into Jan Southern my marketing career – which has always included magazine publishing. I couldn’t be happier to bring my experience and my love for this area to Pooler Magazine. My husband Morris and I truly love living here. We know this is home. So now, as Pooler Magazine marks this milestone, I am excited to guide it into its next evolution as “Your Community Magazine.” We will continue providing the interesting and uplifting feature stories about the people and organizations that make this community one of the best places to live, work and play. But there will be more. More stories, more content and more ways to share everything about the community via print, online and social media. Thank you for being part of this vibrant and friendly community, and thank you for continuing to enjoy Pooler Magazine as much as I do.

CHRISTY STEPHENS: Turning Pain into Purpose
Story by Katie Vandenhouten • Photos by Shelia Scott
S
uicide. It may as well be a four-letter word. It’s an uncomfortable subject that is so stigmatized it seems easier to avoid than to address. When someone ends their own life, those left behind are in a state of shock and confusion. The pain and grief are as real and eviscerating as with any other death, yet society views it differently. It’s unkind to speak ill of the dead, but the words “weak,” “coward,” or “selfish” are dropped as carelessly as crumbs when someone takes their own life. Christy Stephens knows what it’s like to lose a loved one to suicide. She knows the pain, the grief and the stigma. She is now an advocate for suicide prevention, and it is her mission to bring this sensitive subject out of the shadows and erase the stigma of suicide altogether. Her daughter, Jennifer, was a typical middle school student. She played softball, went to church, joked around with her siblings, and enjoyed spending time with her friends. When she started getting bullied in the sixth grade, her parents did what any parents would do: they went to the school, talked with the principal and teachers, and handled the situation. Or so they thought. Unfortunately, the school’s zero tolerance policy on bullying wasn’t enough. The taunting persisted into her seventh grade year, until it was too much for Jennifer to bear. On Valentine’s Day of 2014, she ended her life. She was thirteen years old. “You don’t ever overcome this,” Christy explains. “If you bully someone and they take their own life, I think it’s murder. I think they pushed her, and they murdered my child. That’s how I felt.” She says her daughter was a strong, beautiful, outgoing power hitter whom everybody loved. Even though she was being teased, she never expected this could happen. “She took up for everybody that was being bullied, but nobody took up for her,” she says through tears.
She refuses to be bitter, though. Instead, she is doing everything in her power to make sure no other parent has to experience the pain of losing a child this way. The year that she lost Jennifer, she attended The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s (AFSP) annual Out of Darkness Walk. She has been an advocate ever since, and she is now chair of the event. The fundraiser boosts the platform of suicide prevention and mental health, with the goal of reducing the suicide rate by 20% by the year 2025.
“I think they pushed her, and they murdered my child. That's how I felt.”
www.PoolerMagazine.com |November/December 2019 11
According to AFSP, 113 people die every day by suicide. Suicide claims more lives than war, murder, and natural disasters combined, yet suicide prevention receives only a fraction of the funding compared to other leading causes of death. Suicide is preventable, but unless society breaks the taboo and gets comfortable talking about it, people will be afraid to ask for help. So Christy talks about it to anyone who will listen. If there’s an event where she can speak or hand out pamphlets, she never misses an opportunity to offer her support. “I’m going to be there to make sure I’m passing out information,” she says. “I know it’s not a subject people want to talk about, but you’ll be amazed at how many people need it. They need to know that there’s somebody they can talk to.” Her mission is not only to tell Jennifer’s story and raise awareness, but also to
12
comfort others who have lost someone by suicide. In addition to working with AFSP, she created Jennifer’s Dream Team, a local charity that gives donations directly to those impacted by suicide in Pooler and the surrounding area. Whether it’s shopping for the family, providing meals, or donating money for funeral expenses, Jennifer’s Dream Team provides any help the family may need. When Jennifer died, the community pulled together to help her family, and this is their way of paying it forward. Jennifer’s Dream Team is not just support for family members. If someone just needs to talk or needs emotional support, Christy is there to help. “Call me,” she says. “I’ll come to you.” If she reaches just one person, she says it’s worth it. She urges those with
www.PoolerMagazine.com | November/December 2019
depression to change their scenery, talk to someone, get some sunshine, exercise, anything but sit alone dwelling on their thoughts. Walk away. Don’t listen to the bullies. Go somewhere you feel comfortable. Go to an adult,” she advises. “That feeling will eventually go away. Don’t let your weakest moment be the last breath that you take.” She wants people to know the warning signs. “Pay attention to your loved ones,” she cautions. Common red flags include withdrawing from people, not participating in activities they usually enjoy, sleeping excessively and giving away possessions. “Watch for those signs,” she says. For those who are dealing with the pain of losing a loved one, Jennifer’s father, Ben, urges them to keep moving forward and not to be hard on themselves. “You have to fight hard every day,” he says.
How to Help
(from SuicidePreventionLifeline.org) Suicide is the second leading cause of death for young people between 10 to 24. Sometimes struggle can be underestimated because of age. Help is available. Take your loved one seriously: Some people feel that kids who say they are going to hurt or kill themselves are “just doing it for attention.” But if your child, friend, or family member confides thoughts of suicide, believe them and get help. Listen with empathy and provide support: A fight or breakup might not seem like a big deal, but for a young person it can feel immense. Sympathize and listen. Minimizing what your child or friend is going through can increase his or her sense of hopelessness. Learn the warning signs: Friends sometimes let friends know if they are thinking about suicide or dying. Other times, changes in behavior may show that someone is struggling.
“Know it’s not your fault, because you will blame yourself over and over.” Christy’s message is just to keep pushing forward and keep telling the stories so people know they’re not alone. “You have to make yourself get up. You have to make yourself look at the world as beautiful as the person that you lost, and think about what they would want you to do. Even though they aren’t here, they would want you to keep fighting for them.” Her faith in God has helped her get through the worst loss of her life. “I know if I didn’t have Him in my life I wouldn’t be sitting talking to you right now,” she says. “Because I know He’s with us, in everything I do. That’s why He’s pushing me to get what I need to get done to help save lives.” The pain is always there, but now there is also a purpose. Christy Stephens’
purpose now is to save as many people as possible, and that will only happen if people keep talking about suicide and mental health until it’s no longer taboo. “I’m going to do this with my last breath that I take,” she says. “I’m going to tell Jennifer’s story. I’m going to tell my story, and I’m going to encourage people.” She will never stop talking about suicide prevention, and if her story inspires one person to get involved or prevents one person from taking their life, Jennifer will not have died in vain. For more information or to make a donation, visit Jennifer’s Dream Team on Facebook, or contact Christy Stephens at 912-547-3738 or jennifersdreamteam@ yahoo.com. For free and confidential support, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.
Don’t keep suicide a secret: If your friend is considering suicide, don’t promise to keep it a secret. Tell him or her you can help, but you need to involve other people, like a trusted adult. Neither of you have to face this alone. For free and confidential support, visit SuicidePreventionLifeline.org or call 1-800-273-8255.

Southern Motors began its long and respected history among automobile dealers 90 years ago when its founder, Julius Kaminsky, recognized the essential role automobiles would play in the lives of his friends and neighbors in the Savannah area. It took many long days and several years of dedication to his dream before Julius could open the doors of his own dealership, Southern Motors, on Broughton Street in downtown Savannah, GA.
“I personally respond day and night to all inquiries and always ensure a great deal.” Julius was committed to making Southern Motors a place where his business values would be reflected in the positive experience of his customers and employees. Quality products and attentive customer service remain the hallmark of a Southern Motors sale. Every day, the Southern Motors family of dealerships strives to maintain the legacy and standards of quality, customer service and honest values established by its founder. Every day the team at Southern Motors Acura continues that legacy by giving the customer the best possible car buying or leasing experience.

If you want to look and feel your best, consider booking an appointment at Brave Salon. When you walk into the Aveda-product salon you immediately notice the chic coffee bar just in front of the color mixing bar. Owner and hairstylist, Leslie Gideon, opened the trendy-mixed-with-vintage style salon in early February to fill a need for more natural hair care options in West Chatham. “The reason I opened up an Aveda salon is because of the quality of the product. I think people need to be more aware of what they are putting in and on their bodies. Aveda products are all-natural and organic,” says Leslie. Along with being environmentally responsible, stylists are experienced in a variety of techniques. More importantly, they provide personalized customer service. “Part of being a great stylist isn’t just based on what you do; it’s about

Offering Options for Area Seniors
Golden Hours Senior Services, LLC was established in October 2018 to expand the scope of local senior care options. Melissa Waller, owner and administrator, aspires to provide services that facilitate fulfillment and independence for seniors in the area.
22
“It seemed there were a lot of needs not being met by available services. There are seniors who can take care of themselves well, but they may need help with matters of everyday living, such as household management issues, transportation or resource navigation. That’s where concierge or companion services come in,” Melissa stated. For seniors needing personal assistance, licensed and experienced team members are available to provide in-home care. “The caregiver and I meet with the family to ensure it’s a good fit. It’s important that we know what each senior enjoys and needs and what will improve their quality of life,” Melissa explained.
Golden Hours offers an array of services: Companion Services are aimed at fulfilling household management needs: running errands, preparing meals or even transporting seniors to medical appointments, just to name a few. Personal Care Services provide assistance with daily activities, such as mobility, grooming and dressing. Concierge Services fill in the care gaps, as many seniors aren’t comfortable with travel, clerical or business matters. Melissa sees a big need for ongoing social engagement, so Golden Hours offers entertainment and excursion options for those able to get out and about if accompanied. “Activity and social engagement are vital elements for health and wellbeing, so I want to do everything I can to facilitate life enrichment services. “We’re here to support independence, engagement and fulfillment,” Melissa said. HOOFS 4 HEALING
A Special Place Where Horses Provide Therapy

Story by Barbara Russell
K
aren and Ken Stewart find joy in the same thing – seeing a child smile, and seeing a child’s eyes light up when they see their special horse, and that happens regularly at their Hoofs 4 Healing facility. In March of this year, Karen and Ken assumed operations of Hoofs 4 Healing Equestrian Services, Inc. and they relocated the program to their property on Stagecoach Road in Bloomingdale which is just minutes from Pooler. Equine Assisted Activities Therapy (EAAT) is the use of horses to achieve goals that enhance physical, emotional, social, cognitive and behavioral disorders. Instructors are certified and teach educational horseback riding skills to people who have disabilities such as Autism, ADD, ADHD, spina bifida, Down Syndrome, muscular dystrophy and other learning disabilities. EAAT focuses on therapeutic riding skills and the
development of a relationship between horse and rider. Riders do not have to ride to benefit; the horses can act as an aid – as a companion to be cared for. Karen explains that Hoofs 4 Healing, a facility for Equine Assisted Activities Therapy, is a place where a child gets to find acceptance, kindness, joy and movement. “This is their sport, not soccer, basketball or cheerleading,” says Karen, “just horses, just a time to have fun, just a one-on-one connection with their special horse. They may not be able to walk or run, but they can ride and feel the movement of walking. They may not be able to move their hands or legs, but they can feel the breath of a horse against their hands, and they can glide in the saddle like they are flying as they are led around the arena. A day at Hoofs 4 Healing is all about them.” There are four horses in the Hoofs 4 Healing program that were donated to be used for equine assisted therapy, and Karen and Ken also use two of their personal horses. Each horse is very gentle and has special abilities to meet the physical, mental and emotional needs of these special students. Let’s meet the horses: “All the horses are gentle, but Fancy is exceptionally gentle with the children. One of her special qualities is that she is a Paso Fino with a smooth gait that helps work core muscles and builds strength of the riders. She’s often used for first time riders,” says Karen.
“Fancy is the favorite of Pepe’ Lorza,” says Ken. “It’s the personal contact with the horse. She will breathe on his hands and make him smile really big. When being ridden, she’s very smooth, giving him the movement of walking.” Rayban, a bay quarter horse, is also very gentle, as all the horses are, but he has a special talent – he is very good at lunging. When a horse is lunging, it is attached to a long line and walks and trots in a circle around the person controlling the lunge line. “Rayban is very good with teaching the rider in the beginning stages of riding such as walk, trot, and body alignment,” says Karen. “Carol is the leader of the herd. He is a dark bay, 161/2 hands high – That’s huge to some people, but size does not intimidate the kids,” says Karen. “They can sense that they (the horses) are very gentle, and Carol is a gentle giant.” Horses have friends too. “Raban and Carol are buddies, and they’ll eat out of the same bucket,” says Karen. “Before coming to Hoofs 4 Healing, Carol was a champion open jumper, but he suffered an injury that prevented him from jumping anymore, and now he is enjoying his second career as a therapy horse.” “Shay is a gray Arabian. Shay was donated by one of our Board of Directors, Jamie Durrence. Jamie bottle-fed Shay from a small colt after his mother was not able to care for him and trained him to be a beautiful jumper. He’s super smart in

the arena and we use him for our more experienced riders.” Karen and Ken use two of their personal horses, Phoenix and Hooch, in their program. “Phoenix is a beautiful palomino. We have a picture of him on the back of our Hoofs 4 Healing t-shirts, and we consider him our mascot. He is very gentle and sensitive around the kids,” says Karen. “He is good for sensory activities with the children. He will lick hands and breathe softly on their faces, and he knows some tricks. He will shake hands and put his head down to pray!” “Hooch is a retired reining horse,” says Ken. “He knows just what to do – he’s on autopilot with the kids!” “Through these horses, the children find acceptance, kindness and joy,” says Karen, “and that’s more important that anything that money can buy.” It’s easy to feel Karen’s empathy and enthusiasm and to recognize her innate love for children. That loving human component is a necessity to make Hoofs 4 Healing successful. “All our instructors are certified with The Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (P.A.T.H.). The program was founded by Kerrie Griffin Henry in 2013, utilizing the horses to their highest capacity to bring her passion to life for others. Karrie has 20 plus years working with special needs children, active military and veterans.” Karen and Ken both have a lifetime of experience with horses. Karen’s father, Gerald Douberly, a Certified Journeyman Farrier for 45 years, had 20 to 30 horses, so naturally Karen grew up in the saddle,
30
and summer days and weekends were spent with their horses from dawn to dusk. Ken is a Vietnam Veteran and served as a Force Recon Marine, and he also has always enjoyed riding and training horses. Ken is a cancer survivor, and after being diagnosed with stage four throat cancer, he thought he would not be able to ride again, yet he gets up every day to take care of the barn and horses…he knows firsthand the benefits of therapy. It’s obvious that Ken is a very tough guy, but he also is a gentle spirit. He loves being a side walker during the riding therapy sessions, experiencing the
www.PoolerMagazine.com | November/December 2019
joy of the riders and seeing those special smiles. He has a special smile too when describing the smiles of these special children. It’s obvious that the joy he experiences is real. It’s been less than a year since Karen and Ken have assumed operations of Hoofs 4 Healing, and their days have been busy and productive. They are giving regularly scheduled lessons with special needs children, they had two summer camps, and they also give riding lessons to able-bodied riders. Of course, this would not have been possible without their staff of very gentle and well-trained therapy horses and the volunteers who perform many tasks. Atmosphere is important, and “We try to make it fun,” says Ken, “whatever their needs are. We use activities based on different levels to meet the child’s needs.” The Hoofs 4 Healing programs will continue to expand. Soon they will have a Wounded Warrior Program where veterans with PTSD will have their own day at the facility. They also hope to become more involved with the school system: for example with field trips, and to have more summer camps next summer, but their biggest goal is to have a covered arena. Karen and Ken Stewart have put their hearts and souls into reestablishing and expanding the Hoofs 4 Healing therapeutic riding program. The result? It is flourishing and ready to grow. Could just about anybody develop and maintain an equine assisted activities therapy facility? Probably not.
“You know, it takes a special person to do that, ….a loving person,” said someone who has known Karen for a lifetime – her dad. Hoofs 4 Healing is a special place… with special horses…for special children…with special needs. Stop by, or volunteer, to be part of this special facility, and one day your eyes may light up when you see a special child with one of these very special horses. It’s been said many times that “the outside of a horse is good for the inside of man,” and Hoofs 4 Healing is a place to experience it!
Volunteers are always needed Currently, they have about eight volunteers who work on a rotating schedule. They are trained on safety, and they perform a variety of jobs which may include working directly with the horses or helping with tasks such as signing in students or making sure helmets fit. Exercise riders are also needed. Volunteers are needed in many other areas such as: marketing and advertising, grant writing, building a website, social media, videos, photography and barn maintenance. Anyone interested in volunteering can contact Karen at Hoofs4healing.org or (912) 313-0618. The best time to call is 8:30 to 9:00 a.m. or after 8:30 p.m. Hoofs 4 Healing will be having a Ribbon Cutting and a Grand Opening very soon. Dates will be posted on Facebook.

5 WAYS TO SURVIVE THE WINTER BLUES
all is beautiful. The leaves are turning, it is cooler outside, school is back in session and the holidays are just around the corner. Fall also brings with it an urge to slow down, snuggle into the covers and eat some comfort foods. Fall through winter, even in a relatively warm climate like our area, means colder temperatures, longer periods of darkness and less sunlight. These conditions trigger your natural response to hibernate.
So what can you do? 5 Ways to Survive the Winter Blues •
You feel sleepy: the circadian rhythm is your body’s internal clock that prompts when we sleep, rise, eat—and is affected by environmental cues like sunlight and temperature.
•
You are SAD- Seasonal Affective Disorder: You may have brain fog, are less motivated, have the urge to isolate, difficulty staying awake, experience more agitation, guilt over menial things and even despair.
•
You are craving carbs- When we feel down, we look for a quick boost. Carbs will quickly boost your insulin and eventually spike your serotonin, so you feel better for a short time.
But our jobs, family responsibilities and life in general don’t hibernate which means we must be able to push ourselves at a time when our biology is saying “slow down.” These are 5 ways you can help yourself adapt to these conditions.
1.
Get more Vitamin D from light (sun or simulated) - Get outside or stand at the window - Open the curtains and blinds to let in as much natural light as possible - Purchase a light box. These boxes simulate sunlight. 2. Eat healthy foods that contain Vitamin D and boost your serotonin - Eggs - Chocolate above 72% cacao and low in sugar - Spinach - Seeds and nuts – pumpkin, flax seeds and almonds are good choices - Bananas –boost serotonin almost immediately 3. Take Vitamin D supplements In order to raise your vitamin D levels into the optimum range the Endocrine Society has recommended the following daily intake levels (from all sources): - Children under one-year-old: 400-1,000 IU/day - Children one to 18 years old: 600-1,000 IU/day - Adults: 1500-2000 IU/day 4. Use Essential Oils to increase serotonin - Lemon Oil can boosts the production of both serotonin and dopamine. You can sniff it directly from the bottle or diffuse it for 6 minutes every day. - Peppermint Oil is an invigorating and refreshing essential oil. You can inhale directly from the bottle or diffuse 3-5 drops daily. - Geranium -contains citronellol and geraniol which can help to improve one's mood. It can be applied topically to the skin where it can then travel to the limbic system (the emotional control center of the brain). - Ylang-Ylang - helps treat depression by relaxing the nerves and reduces adrenaline. Inhaling is a popular option. Using a diffuser and allowing the fragrance to permeate your home is another option. 5. Get some exercise - It could be as simple as a 20-minute walk - A yoga class 2-3 times a week - HIIT (high intensity interval training) - 1-2 times a week

SOUTH FORK PROVISIONS: Bringing Families Back to the Table.
Story by Katrice Williams | Photos by Shelia Scott

n a time where there is a fast food venue on every street corner and iPhones, iPads, Facebook, email, Twitter and overbooked schedules consume many individual’s lives each day, there is an obvious void in many families. Several aspects of the family unit have changed over time, along with many of the non-negotiables of the yester-years–a time when good food and family came together around the table. Joe and Jennifer VanGiller were determined to do something about that. The two opened the doors of their shop, South Fork Provisions (SFP), on May 14th, deciding to leave the corporate life behind in order to embark on their 34
entrepreneurial dreams. Indeed, they took a real leap of faith. “It was something that was placed on our hearts to do. We have our faith in the right spot, as we put all of our trust in God. We know that whatever we go through, He’ll sustain us. God gave us the gift to serve people and that’s what we aim to do,” Jennifer said. In fact, whether opening a farmers market style shop or a traditional barbecue restaurant, the couple entertained several ideas. “It just kept coming back to good, home-cooked food.” Joe and Jennifer have been big foodies for a long time. Whether experimenting with new recipes, vacationing at food-

Both have always been in the food/customer service industry, so they certainly have a lot of beneficial experience. In today’s busy times, where fast food is often the most convenient option, Joe and Jennifer wanted customers to have convenient yet “homemade” dishes where quality is never compromised. They decided that “prepared meals to go” would be a phenomenal option for the community. “We put so much love and so much effort into our dishes. the table. We just want to make life a little bit easier for someone. I like knowing that we can help others with the service that we provide,” Jennifer stated. An array of tasty dishes, prepared each week, are made for customers right in the “shop’s fully-equipped commercial kitchen.” The dishes are packaged and labeled; heating suggestions and ingredients are on each label. The dishes are, then, refrigerated and ready for customer pickup. A large container feeds approximately 6-8 people for about $30 and a small container feeds about 3-5 people for an average of $15. There is actually no fixed menu or specific “genre of food,” as the couple prides themselves in creatively changing the selection for customers week-to-week. Each Saturday, a new menu variety for the upcoming week is “released online,” available to view on the restaurant’s website, Facebook and Instagram. Popular dishes include: Chicken Pot Pie, Shepherd's Pie, Baked Spaghetti,

NAKYLA NEAL
Alongside New Hampstead High School’s JROTC Program: Character • Leadership • Commitment
T
he Junior Reserved Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) was officially established as a result of the National Defense Act of 1916. Sponsored by the U.S. Armed Forces, JROTC is committed to instilling invaluable life skills within young people, including “leadership, discipline, selfconfidence and patriotism.” The New Hampstead High School (NHHS) Air Force JROTC Program has been a tremendous asset to the school since its inception in 2012 when the school first opened. Whether students aspire to obtain a military or civilian career, the program persists to help develop tomorrow’s leaders today. It is currently led by Retired U.S. Air Force (U.S.A.F.) Major Kelvin Oxendine, along with Retired U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sergeant Marvin Palmer. Major Oxendine served in the U.S.A.F. for 23 years prior to retiring. Afterward, he taught ROTC at the Citadel in Charleston and later moved to Charlotte where he taught high school JROTC prior to recently accepting his current position at New Hampstead as the JROTC Senior Instructor. Whether traveling the world and meeting new people or even receiving a
“Be the best that you can be throughout life; be successful. If it’s in your heart, go for it.”
free education, the Major is grateful for all the opportunities he earned due to his U.S.A.F. service. “I’m glad I did it. I highly recommend it to all high school students,” he said. In addition, Major Oxendine encourages students to learn more about the JROTC Program to see how it may be of benefit to them. He, too, is happy with the program’s tremendous growth over the past semesters, going from 49 students last semester to 81 students currently enrolled. “I love my job; I love the kids here. I’d like to see our doors overflow with kids coming in … kids that want to be here, want to learn and want to have fun. We’re teaching leadership, accountability and responsibility. If they want to go to the military, we help them. Our focus is not to get them into the military; our focus is to teach them life lessons … to get them ready for the next part of life,” he said.
Many cadets are able to see the advantages of the program. Cadet Sergeant Eady, a 3rd semester JROTC student, reveals that he values “the friendships and bonds” that he has made. Also, Cadet Airman First Class Thomas notes that she appreciates that “respect and a [positive] attitude” is consistently encouraged and expected. Cadet Airman Basic Reed states that the program has “helped [him] to become an even better person.” Further, Cadet Technical Sergeant Florin, who aspires to pursue a U.S. Army career, feels that the skills that she has developed will be a tremendous benefit in her career. “I’ll use my leadership skills to work with my team,” she said. The program strives to take a holistic approach with its students in order to help them develop into well-rounded citizens. It presently offers cadets several extracurricular activities, including Color Guard, Drill Team and Raiders Team; the teams have the privilege to perform at various events and compete with other high school JROTC teams. Actually, the Raiders Team is very popular amongst many cadets. The team competes against other local units in highly physical competitions; proper training is required, as endurance, strength and a truly

competitive spirit are essential. Cadet Colonel Nakyla Neal, a Savannah native, is a senior at NHHS and a 6th semester JROTC student. She is one of the highest-ranking cadets in the unit. In fact, Nakyla served as the Cadet Commander last semester—the highest position in the unit. It is awarded to one exceptional cadet each semester that has displayed exemplary leadership skills and remarkable character traits throughout their tenure in the program. Indeed, the apple does not fall far from the tree, as Nakyla’s dad Michaele retired from a successful Army career. She grew up within a military household; Savannah was her dad’s “last duty station before he retired.” Nakyla is very appreciative for the unwavering love and support from her family. Her dad Michaele and mom Angela, both originally from North Carolina, are two of her biggest role models. She is immensely grateful that they taught their children to “always work hard and to appreciate everything that God blesses them with.” She is also thankful for her big brothers Michaele II and Naki, along with her older sister Tequeaka. Naki, who had been a JROTC student at Groves High School, was a huge reason that Nakyla decided to join the JROTC program. “I joined it to see what it was about. I liked it, so I stayed; it has been awesome. 38
I’ve always liked it … the military aspect of it [and] the leadership,” she asserted. She, too, will always remember one of her biggest influences--her loving Aunt Pam Mallory--who passed away last year after enduring a courageous battle with breast cancer. Nakyla has proudly and humbly “stepped up” as a “big sister” and mentor to her aunt’s daughter (her little cousin) Karlee; Nakyla would certainly not have it any other way. Nakyla has enjoyed the opportunities that she has been afforded through JROTC, including the community service activities. The JROTC group has done a lot of good within the community over the years. Whether visiting senior citizens at a local nursing care center or participating in “Pack House” where cadets pack lunches for underprivileged kids, cadets have been able to experience, first-hand, the value of giving back and the genuine pride attained from sharing in responsibility for the well-being of their community. Nakyla and the group recently participated in a largescale community cleanup on Tybee Island that was filmed by PBS for an upcoming television documentary. The opportunities have been memorable for her, especially visiting the senior citizens’ nursing care center some time ago. “I’m hoping that we can start that back up again. That was nice—just going and sitting down talking to them because some of them never have a person to talk to,” she said.

Further, Nakyla was the NHHS Color Guard Commander during her sophomore year; she is also proud to have become part of school history after joining the wrestling team this year. “Another cadet before me was the only female on the team; I wanted to go ahead and try. Right now, training is tough, but I like being part of our first [coed] wrestling team. Girls wrestling is not something you see every day,” she stated. Future opportunities are limitless for the extraordinary young lady. Following graduation, Nakyla endeavors to join an ROTC Program in college, allowing her to later begin a successful military career as an officer. Family, friends and school leaders are aware of Nakyla’s potential. More so, Major Oxendine feels that Nakyla has an array of noteworthy attributes, enabling her to accomplish whatever she sets her mind towards. “She has patience, an eagerness to learn and an eagerness to lead. She is soft-spoken, but she is heard and can get her point across. I think the biggest thing is her dedication to the program … her loyalty,” he mentioned. Nakyla encourages other young people to follow their hearts and to relentlessly strive after their dreams. “Be the best that you can be throughout life; be successful. If it’s in your heart, go for it.”

What makes a home warm and inviting? Is it the furniture, the lighting, the throw pillows? Is it the paint and wallpaper? All the above? To keep our home a haven sometimes we need to ‘redo’ it all and other times we simply need to spruce it up. At Wiley’s Home Center, they take pride in their ability to help make your house a home. Not just a furniture and appliance store, they also have interior design and appliance repair services to accommodate their customers’ needs. They do it all, from helping you choose a statement piece that adds a fresh look to redesigning the whole room. They can bring your décor from blah to beautiful. Wiley's Home Center has proudly been providing the greater Rincon area with old fashioned customer service and quality products for over thirty years. In April of 1987, Wiley and his wife Rosalyn opened the doors to a 20,000 square foot furniture and appliance facility called Wiley's Home Center and in 1988, the successful business added 15,000 additional square feet of floor space. “In this day and age being a family owned business has its challenges, but we are very blessed with a very supportive community.” says Detra Thomas, company CEO. “And hat’s off to the greatest staff. They can handle it all- and do so in the best way possible. They provide the outstanding service behind the sale.” “We are recognized and known for our
“Our furniture doesn’t wear out; it gets handed down!” nice furniture, for carrying the best quality product that will last you and your family for generations.” Detra says, “We are a story of longevity, from our business to our furniture. Everything is custom made and although it may take longer to create, and you may pay a little more, it is an investment.” “Our furniture doesn’t wear out; it gets handed down!” she says. Because they are continually restocking, they are currently having a store wide sale. Detra says, “Our showroom is always fresh because we have new items coming in all the time. To make room, we have markdowns throughout the store. Come down and shop our warehouse sale!” Seasonal Changes Summer is over and the holidays will soon be upon us. As we approach the fall and winter months many of us like to ‘nest’ and make changes in our home. “This time of year, customers are looking to make their homes more inviting, and they are looking to make their families more comfortable, over the holiday season. “says
Detra. “At Wiley’s Home Center we can provide you with everything from a new bed for you or your guests, to a new dining room table for Thanksgiving dinner.” Trends Styles ranging from traditional to modern & chic, from new trends to classic décor, Wiley’s inventory has it all. What they don’t have they can special order, and everything possible can be tailored for your décor. You may be looking for the shabby chic and the farmhouse look, which although is not new it is still by far the most popular home style seen in years, or perhaps you have that look and want to update it with a different color palette. Detra says, “The farmhouse look is all about soft colors, whites, greys beiges and rustic woods, but we are starting to see a few colors coming back, some blues and burgundies. We would be happy to help you find just the right pieces to bring out the best in your home décor.” Detra says, “From our floor to your door you will find Wiley’s provides you with great service through the whole experience.”
