DINAH GRETSCH: Championing Future Musicians While Creating a Legacy for Learning

November/December 2023

The Hines Family - Savannah, GA The daughter of an Olympic swimmer, Angela swam competitively until a scoliosis surgery ended her career. Her two daughters both followed in the family’s footsteps, and when 11 year-old Nola developed signs that Angela feared might signal the onset of scoliosis, she brought her to St. Joseph’s/Candler.

WE’RE COMPETITIVE ABOUT PROVIDING THE BEST CARE.

Dr. Steven Greer, a musculoskeletal physician specializing in sports medicine, diagnosed Nola with a 2cm leg-length discrepancy. He understood how much competitive swimming meant to the family. Because his approach involves identifying noninvasive therapies to delay or prevent surgery whenever possible, his solution was relatively simple—Orthotics would give her the support she needed. Today Nola continues to pursue the sport she loves, as Dr. Greer continues to treat the entire family. “My goal is to help patients get where they want to be in life with as minimal intervention as possible, whenever possible.” – Dr. Greer

Medicare Annual Open Enrollment Oct 15 - Dec 7

This is when everyone with Medicare has to choose to either keep their current plan or enroll in a different one. Health and drug plans often change cost, coverage, and who is in their networks annually. It’s tempting to keep what you have , even if you aren’t satisfied, because investigating new plans can be very confusing. That’s why working with a local agent is critical to obtaining the best outcome for your needs. Working with Melissa—at no cost to you—will ensure that you: • get the most benefits from your plan • get the lowest drug cost • get personal service all year whenever you need help or have questions It can look like a tangled web but Melissa can explain the four parts of Medicare (A, B, C, and D) as well the difference between Medicare Advantage and Supplemental Plans. She can also assist with seeing if you qualify for Extra Help (federal prescription help) Medicaid or to eliminate the monthly $174.70 Medicare Part B Premium (2024 premium). Melissa also works with Medicare recipients under 65, including those who have Medicare through Social Security Disability because they too have to make the same decisions annually. Melissa states “I know many clients are understandably concerned with cost but the cheapest insurance may not fit your needs. When we look at plans together, we will consider all the costs related to the insurance, as well as what you are actually getting for your money.”

Affordable Care Open Enrollment Dates

Nov. 1 - Dec. 15 (Effective date: Jan. 1, 2024) and Nov. 1 - Jan. 15 (Effective date: Feb. 1, 2024) There is an extension period for Affordable Care only, so if you miss the deadline all is not lost! nyone who has ever met Dinah Gretsch knows they have met a force of nature. She is a whirl of excitement—a flurry of dreams realized—all complemented by twists and turns of entrepreneurship and success. Plus, her life story is laced with enthusiasm for music which has helped shape the story of the Gretsch Music empire and “That Great Gretsch Sound.” Dinah admits she is no musician. Rather, she has always been a lover of music. An Air Force brat, she lived in England and all over Europe while her father served in the military. In England, she witnessed the expansion and explosion of rock music. She met the Beatles when she was 13, and along the way went to day festivals and concerts where she met Dave Clark 5, Rolling Stones, Petula Clark and Herman’s Hermits. “I was profoundly influenced to get involved with music early on; all of these groups were still unknown in the United States. When I came back to the United States, I was basically an English rocker,” she quips with a laugh.

Dinah admits she is no musician. Rather, she has always been a lover of music.

DINAH GRETSCH: Championing Future Musicians While Creating a Legacy for Learning Story by Jenny Lynn Anderson | Photography by Erich Perez

But she was so much more than that. She was an entrepreneur at heart. A numbers girl. As a junior in high school, she taught bookkeeping to adults at night school. She bought her first business, a credit bureau and collection agency, at age 20. She sold that and moved to another opportunity. Next up, she went to work for Fred Gretsch Enterprises, located in Ridgeland, SC in 1978, which at that time manufactured banjos and guitars and was a mass merchandiser supplier. She married Fred Gretsch five years later. Fred had always wanted to buy the Gretsch Company back because it had been sold to Baldwin in 1967. In early 1985, the Gretsch Company came on the market. The couple purchased it and the beautiful harmonic blend of partnership and marriage commenced. Dinah became the First Lady of Gretsch and they started building their business to become known as the Dynamic Duo in the music industry. And along, the way they became world-famous drum and guitar makers. A Centenary Sensation Today the couple has been in the business for 100 years combined. “We’ve made a great team because I like the financial and operational side of the business and Fred enjoys the marketing, licenses and the intellectual property part,” explains Dinah. www.PoolerMagazine.com | November/December 2023 11

Early on, they moved the drum factory production facilities to Ridgeland and started manufacturing guitars again in 1989 after production had been on hiatus for eight years. That same year, Gretsch Music moved its headquarters to Pooler, Georgia. Although they bring different talents to the mix, they both love to connect to others. For instance, in 1988, George Harrison’s Cloud Nine album cover featured him holding a 1957 Gretsch 6128 that he purchased in Liverpool in 1961. Dinah immediately sent him a thank you card and as a result they became great friends. Just weeks later, Harrison invited the Gretsches to California to discuss making the Traveling Wilbury model for him, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Jeff Lyn. Over the years, the couple have crisscrossed the world and continued doing business by networking this way to connect to different artists through their passion for music. This formula for success has indeed worked. The Gretsch Company celebrates its 140th year anniversary this year.

Case in point. She has extensively worked with visionaries such as David Wish, founder of Music Will, a nonprofit organization that changes lives by transforming music education in US public schools. She and Fred also believed they could make a difference at Georgia Southern. The University named its School of Music the Fred and Dinah Gretsch School of Music in 2021 and the couple pledged $3 million plus gave their Gretsch Collection of historic drums, guitars, and company archives to Georgia Southern. The University will catalog and display the

52 girls signed up in 2022 for the two elective classes that could accommodate only 34 students. “It’s so exciting and it’s gone over like a bang,” she exclaims, adding they will add a ukulele program this year. Dinah notes how Taylor Swift profoundly impacted guitar sales years ago when she went on tour. “When girls saw her rock that guitar on stage, they believed they could do it,” Dinah adds. This vision for a child’s exposure to music education is what drives Dinah Gretsch. “Music makes you smarter because you have to focus, practice and be part of a team,” she explains. For this taskmaster, this isn’t just lip service. She puts her money where her mouth is. Mrs. G’s Foundation made it possible to add 11 modern band programs in Chatham County Schools. She has also made a substantial donation to NextGen, a program of NAMM. Her gift of $300,000 impacts college-aged students and faculty engaged in music programs by creating new and creative routes to find Reaching Future careers and success in the Musicians music industry. BRITTANY WHITEHEAD The Adventures of an Author Story by Cindy Reid Photography by Leidy Lester

ome things are just meant to be. Eyes lock across a room and the rest is history. That’s exactly what happened to Brittany Whitehead when she first saw the sweet pup with the soft brown eyes. “I immediately knew Hannah was our dog,” says Brittany. She had gone into PetSmart to get food for their rescue cat Pumpkin Spice Latte where she saw Hannah, a mixed breed shelter dog, at the Georgia Animal Rescue and Defence, Inc. (GARD) table. “Hannah had been at the shelter for 508 days. Joy Bohannon, GARD’s President, had found her on the side of the road, malnourished and abandoned,” says Brittany. Hannah had been successfully treated for heartworm at the shelter, but that

stigma made prospective adoptive families nervous. Not Brittany. “God put this dog in our path,” she says. “I was adamant and that is not my personality. It was a snap decision.” But Brittany’s husband Reza was a firm no. Reza (Georgia Air National Guard Recruiting Supervisor for the 165th) had recently taken a full-time position at Hunter Air Base. “We had just moved here from Atlanta, and I felt we were too busy to adopt an animal,” he says. But he had to acknowledge there was something special between Brittany and Hannah. “The connection was right there,” he says. “More than when she met me! It was an aha moment.”

And there was a good reason to expand their family. “Between moving to a new town and changing schools, it was a lot for our son Landen at the time. He was dealing with anxiety,” says Reza. They did research as to what could help him and some of that research pointed to adopting a pet. In short order Hannah was adopted by the Whitehead family. They added to her name, making her “Hannah Banana,” and as hoped, their sweet pup gave Landen new responsibility and purpose. “Hannah turned Landen’s anxiety into joy,” says Brittany. “She was a blessing from the start.” By the Numbers The Whiteheads are a busy family with a lot of energy and a very big heart. Reza and Brittany have been married 12 years and they have four children. Landen, who is now 15 years old, Lilly (13 years old), Leela (10 years old) and their newest addition, baby girl Lennox, who is eight months old. The family has three rescue pets—their cat Pumpkin Spice Latte, dog Hannah Banana and guinea pig Cookie. Brittany has published two children’s books, with plans for a third, and together Brittany and Reza have created a party rental business. Adventures in Writing The books got their start naturally. “The animals always follow me in the morning. Leela, our youngest at the time, hated getting up in the morning so I would walk to her room with all the animals, and I would make them ‘talk’ to her.” Says Brittany, “I gave Hannah a sweet voice, and it became essentially a skit we would do in the morning. It was funny and cute, and I wanted to share it with everyone.” Reza says, “My wife said, ‘I want to make this into a book.’ I said, ‘cool babe,’ because it was a great idea, but I thought it would take about six to twelve months because she is not a professional book writer. She knocked it out in two days! Her first book.” By the end of the first week Brittany had an illustrator and publisher company. Altogether the production took two months. The Adventures of a House Pet is a story of friendship, trust, playing, love, family, and more. Take a journey through the perspective of a rescue animal that longs for a family, and a pet that wants world domination (take note, the world is their family’s home). Adventure is the theme, and this lovely story will give you that and more. Your child will enjoy seeing the shenanigans of www.PoolerMagazine.com | November/December 2023 27

n July 5, 2022, Kimberly Golden and her son distributed bags containing a pair of socks and a sandwich to the homeless in Savannah. Later that night, Golden was on an Uber run when she was hit by a drunk driver near Berwick Plantation and suffered extensive injuries. Her days of helping the homeless would not end on that night, however. Enjoying a miraculous recovery that allowed her to return home after five days, the Bloomingdale woman enlisted the help of her church to expand the ministry and acquire nonprofit status. Once homeless, Golden is seeing to the material needs of those in the same situation while offering spiritual nourishment. Socks & Sandwiches Golden operates Socks & Sandwiches. Last November, she was granted nonprofit status. This allows her to solicit sponsorships. Golden funds the ministry with her own money and donations from family, friends and members of her church, Bread of Life Ministries, in Pooler. Every other month, Golden, her pastor and other members of the church distribute 100

Living in Florida, Golden found herself homeless due to marijuana use, criminal activities and generally “not obeying God.” From 1999 to 2008, she either lived on the streets or with family; she said an individual is classified as homeless if they’re not paying rent or mortgage. Golden’s fortunes began to change when she qualified for a Section 8 housing voucher in Florida. She used it for four years there and another four years when she moved to Georgia in 2011. In February, Golden and her husband, whom she met shortly after coming to Georgia, moved to Bloomingdale. In 2018, Golden started driving for Uber. She also attended church and said she “heard” God telling her to start a ministry for the homeless, often receiving this message at sermons. At first, she didn’t listen to God’s voice. “I would tell God you’re not talking to me,” Golden said. “It was the doubt of the enemy.” When it became clear God was speaking to her, Golden finally heeded the calling. Recalling her own experience of being homeless and getting her feet wet and always looking for a bite to eat, she started the Socks & Sandwiches ministry.

The socks are unisex and vary in length and thickness, depending on the season. Golden pays full price for the Jersey Mike’s sandwiches. She said she inquired about a discount and was told the company only assists selected charities. Golden receives some unexpected help at times, however. “A stranger donated $50 after seeing what we were doing,” said Golden, noting they minister to the homeless, most of whom are men. “That made us feel good. That’s inspiring.” The Road to Ministry Golden’s recovery from a near-fatal accident and journey from homeless to a family woman heading up a ministry is equally inspiring. 34

Golden and her son packed 10 bags for men and 10 for women with two pairs of socks and sandwiches they made. They went to the homeless encampment under the Truman Parkway in Savannah and distributed them. Despite some initial concerns over their safety, Golden said the visit went well. Golden planned subsequent visits, but then came the accident that nearly claimed her life. The Accident A motorist ignored a blinking caution light as Golden was heading south on Hwy. 17 and crashed into the front driver’s side of her car. “It was dark out,” Golden said. “I didn’t see him coming. All I saw was a bright light before he hit me.” Golden later found out he had been drinking since the previous day, starting at a July 4th party. Golden was taken to Memorial Hospital with an exploded abdomen, broken vertebrae and ribs and numerous other injuries. Shirlenia Daniel, executive pastor of Bread of Life Ministries, said Golden is a faithful woman of God who had always showed up for services since joining the church when it first
