When I took over magazines more than two years ago, I inherited publications with a long history. Effingham Magazine and Pooler Magazine were established magazines that had served the communities well. And now we are celebrating our 15-year anniversary! Over the years, Pooler Magazine has chronicled the people and organizations who have contributed to the massive growth that has become the norm in Pooler and surrounding areas. It has highlighted the inspiring individuals, who—often against Jan Southern many obstacles—achieved remarkable things or gave back to the community in extraordinary ways. I always say, ours is a magazine that puts out “feel good” stories about the people, places and organizations that make this the best place to live, work and play. That is one of the many things I love about Pooler Magazine and what we continue to strive for with each issue. If you have been picking up our magazines, finding them in your mailbox at home or reading online over the last two years, you may have noticed some important changes to Pooler Magazine. We have improved content, better stories and it is just as much a digital magazine as it is one in print. We have expanded our distribution of Pooler Magazine to more than 250 locations throughout the greater Pooler area including hotels, visitor centers and the airport. Our online readership has grown, and our social media presence brings readers into the stories of Pooler every day. In this 15th Anniversary issue, we look back and talk to a few folks that have been here since the beginning as well as new faces and bright shining stars. We hope you enjoy this issue as much as we loved making it for you. Thank you for allowing us to be “Your Community Magazine.” Here’s to the next 15 years.

and Music Store. Later came the 100seat performance venue, Randy's OldTime Pickin' Parlor. Fortunately for our community, this local establishment has become a mecca for world class musicians and those who appreciate great music and finely crafted instruments. Today “I’m liking old time music—that’s really what I like the most, old time and bluegrass. Bluegrass was my first love. Then came rhythm and blues, country, and all kinds of different bands. But personally, I like to listen to bluegrass on my radio.” Wood says he has an appreciation for all kinds of musical genres. “I have friends in all areas of music, like Tony Rice, a hell of a nice guy, and Billy Gibbons, from ZZ Top, who is another good friend.” Not one for taking time off, Wood says he is not interested in vacations. “I took a vacation one time, twenty five or thirty years ago because my wife wanted to go to Hawaii to visit our daughter and her family.” He went but said “I would rather be here than anywhere else.” 12

He says he stays busy working and learning something new. “You’ve got to have interests in life. Work forty years and one day they stop and go sit in front of the television in the Lazy-boy. That’s not for me. You need to stay interested in something for your physical and mental wellbeing. I learn stuff every day, it keeps life interesting.” Because Wood’s life has been so interesting, Randy Wood: The Lore of the Luthier (Charles K. Wolfe Music Series) by author Daniel Wile was published in 2020 by the University of Tennessee Press (Knoxville). Wile wrote: “Wood’s impact on the music world reaches far beyond repaired guitar frets and warped necks. He has created spaces where music enthusiasts of all stripes can hang out, surrounded by people who speak their language. Randy sets the example for how to behave. All people in the shop are to be treated as friends, whether they have sold a million albums or just picked up a guitar for the first time.” (The book is available on Amazon)

www.PoolerMagazine.com | September/October 2021

The Music Store Wood’s extraordinary custom instruments are available through the on premise music store. Just holding the works of art he creates is a thrill for any experienced or novice musician. But Wood wants to make it clear that musicians of all skill levels and experience can find instruments that suit them perfectly here. As unpretentious as always, he says if you’re looking to pick up an instrument, no matter what skill level or age, this is a great place to come and get started. They carry a new and used inventory of stringed instruments, typically including guitars, banjos, mandolins, fiddles, upright and electric basses. Instrument Repair & Setup A world class luthier, Wood considers repair work a core service of his instrument business. And it’s not for the celebrity musician these days. “Our main business comes from the weekend picker and people with day jobs,” Wood says. “People come in and call and say they didn’t call before because they figured we’d charge too much but I want them to

know our prices are mid-range and, in a lot of cases, lower range.” The Pickin' Parlor Randy's Old-Time Pickin' Parlor is known for its first-rate acoustics and warm and friendly environment. The 110-seat concert hall has hosted major headliners such as Earl Scruggs—“we knew each in Nashville,” Woods says—and other renowned musicians, such as the Boxcars, Junior Brown, and Laurence Juber, here in Bloomingdale. “One thing local people may not realize is that we bring in the best talent in the world. “Wood says people fly in from Pennsylvania or Washington, DC for a show that people who live two blocks away don’t attend. He says he would like to reach more local people and is heartened by the fact that many of the people moving to this area “enjoy good music and know the musicians we bring to the performance hall. Younger people enjoy music. We had a fair number of young people here for the bluegrass fest—a whole new crop!” Last year due to the pandemic, they

were unable to host live music for a year, but the time was put to good use. “We took the opportunity to remodel the concert hall to try to make things a little more comfortable and look a little nicer,” Wood said. The schedule of upcoming shows is jam packed with talent and Wood encourages everyone to come out and enjoy an evening of live music. Looking to the Future Wood says he has no intention of retiring (again) anytime soon, “I retired thirty five or forty years ago. So far, it’s going all right, Maybe I’ll retire again one of these days but everyone I know who retired is dead now.” With the Randy Wood Guitar and Music Store, Wood says, “I started something I enjoy, and I get up every morning and look forward to going to work.” n

Terry Carter Agency, Allstate Insurance “Our goal in the Terry Carter Agency is to deliver outstanding customer service and make sure everyone is properly insured and protected for the unexpected,” says agency owner Terry Carter. They offer auto, homeowners, flood, renters, business, boat, and life insurance. They are dedicated to providing customers with the information they need to make informed insurance decisions. From helping you find available discounts on your auto insurance to talking you through your coverage options, it’s personalized help that keeps you covered and provides peace of mind. Homeowners insurance is an important area where the team at the Terry Carter Agency can help you get the coverage that fits your life and home. Terry says, “No two homes are alike. We will work together to design your insurance policy. We help make the pro-

cess quick and easy, so you can start protecting your home as soon as possible.” He says it’s crucial to consider adding flood insurance because it helps cover physical damage to your home and belongings from floods or related losses from rising water. “When you purchase a flood policy, you’re helping protect yourself from the financial burden flooding can cause,” he says, “In fact, just one inch of water in a home can cost more than $25,000 in damage. Having flood insurance can help make the recovery process quicker, easier and less costly.” Terry moved to Pooler in 2011 and says he treasures it’s small town feel with big city access. He enjoys helping his community and serves as Chairman of the YMCA Board, Chairman of the Morningstar Children’s Center (a 24-hour facility for children with disabilities) and is a member of the Pooler Chamber of Commerce. Terry says being there for his customers “feels like a privilege to me. My team and I are proud to help customers protect their families and future.”

ustin Myatt achieved his lifelong dream this year and opened Myatt’s Garage, a high-performance automotive garage. He specializes in anything with an LS engine, primarily high-end, late model GM cars, new Corvettes, Cadillacs, or older model GM vehicles if they are being rebuilt to a performance mode. It’s strictly engine performance work, Cam swaps- think fast street cars, race cars and all round “speed shop”. (Myatt’s Garage isn’t where you go for minor repairs, transmission builds or bodywork.) Myatt’s Garage is also a BTR Brian Tooley Racing Dealer as well as a Circle D Specialties Dealer for any Engine parts all the way to transmission torque converters. Regular cars have moderately powerful engines that are easier to handle, while performance cars need an enhanced engine to provide superior speed and agility. Owner Justin Myatt says, “Many of these cars go to races, or are for people looking to optimize their car and get the most out of it possible.” As an Automotive Consultant and High-Performance Engine Technician, https://mail.google.c Justin can build and repair engines, as well as add bolt-on high performance parts for optimal acceleration and speed. He can do forced induction, turbos, superchargers and nitrous to force more air into the engine allowing it to run more efficiently and create more power. This is not your dad’s garage- the technology used in today’s world of high-end performance changes rapidly and is very sophisticated. Justin has decades of experience and is able to troubleshoot and diagnose exactly what an engine needs to achieve the peak performance mode his customers want out of their car, whether it’s for racing or daily driving.

Lifetime Passion “Since I was a little boy, it was cars and basketball.” Says Justin, “I worked on pedal bikes, go karts, motorcycles, cars, anything with wheels. My dad really supported me, we went to lots of car shows, races, burn out contests, you name it. I used to go street racing at 10 years old. It all just deepened my interest.” At 13 years old, Justin bought his first car, a 1979 Mazda Rx-7, paying $600 of his own money. He worked his way up to a 1994 Camaro Z28 he built up, which was the fastest car in his high school and by the time he was a senior he was driving a 2003 Corvette Z06. Justin was planning on pursuing his other passion, pro basketball, but during a 20

Melissa McBride Stille of Stille-DeWitt Health Brokerage, LLC

“I’m here to help at no charge to you.”

MELISSA MCBRIDE STILLE WORKS FOR YOU When it comes to health insurance, Melissa knows her stuff. She has been in the health insurance industry for 13 years, an independent insurance agent for four years and the sole proprietor of Stille-DeWitt Health Brokerage since 2020. With specific expertise in Medicare and the Health Insurance Marketplace, she works tirelessly to match her clients with the best health care options available. Not everyone’s needs are the same, therefore their plans and options will be different. “I do as much fact finding for individuals as I can and because my clients range from 20 to 90 years old, each one is different,” Melissa says. “I ask questions about doctors, prescriptions, anything relevant, to learn my clients’ specific health care needs so we can make the best match.” As a specialist in Medicare—the federal health insurance program for recipients over and under 65, including those who qualify through Social Security Disability—Melissa can help navigate the sometimes difficult and complicated program. She also works with people utilizing the Health Insurance Marketplace® and some group insurances. Next Open Enrollment Dates: Medicare: Oct. 15- Dec. 7, effective Jan. 1, 2022 Health Insurance Marketplace: Nov 1- Dec 15, effective Jan 1, 2022 (you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period due to a life event such as losing other coverage, getting married, or having a baby.) You may be able to get more savings and lower costs on Marketplace health insurance coverage due to changes in the law. Under the new law, most people currently enrolled in a Marketplace plan may qualify for more tax credits, resulting in lower premiums. Melissa states, “More people than ever before qualify for help paying for health coverage, even those who weren’t eligible in the past. Staying within their budget is crucial to most clients so I present multiple options enabling them to make educated decisions. Don’t assume anything—call me and we can go over your options. “ Customer Service “Insurance is complex and can be stressful for many people. ‘What do I need to do?’, ‘how do I plan for this?’ are common questions. I am here to help at no charge to you,” Melissa says. “There is never a bill for my services because I am paid by the insurance companies. I work for my clients, not the insurance company.” Melissa reviews her clients’ health policies yearly because there are annual policy changes. She is dedicated to ensuring they get the best possible policy for their needs. She even gives every client her cell number—it is also on all of her advertising so that every client, even future clients, can feel comfortable reaching out to her. “If you get a bill that you don’t understand, call me, text me a picture of it and together we will figure it out. My commitment to you continues after you enroll in a health care plan. I am here for you.” Due to current health/pandemic circumstances, Melissa may be out of the office helping clients or working from home, so please call her on her cell—(912) 239-7119—for an appointment.

sy u B r Simple Recipes fo

s e i l i Fam

Busy mornings, afternoons and evenings are the norm for many families with days full of work, school, extracurricular activities, social commitments and more. Finding time to pause and share a meal is often a priority that may remain difficult to achieve. Here we share simple recipes that have one thing in common—APPLES! CRISP APPLE TACOS put a fresh and sweet spin on a dinnertime classic by making tacos with pork medallions, homemade slaw and apple wedges. With plenty of easy prep work to be done, they’re a convenient way to call everyone to the kitchen; even little ones can help by mixing the dressing, apple sticks and cabbage for the tasty slaw. For a quick and easy dinner option on busy summer nights, fire up the grill and cook GRILLED APPLE PORTOBELLO BURGERS. Distinctly sweet apple rounds are paired with savory, umami-rich portobello mushrooms for a flavor-packed, meatless take on traditional burgers. APPLE AVOCADO TOAST provides a simple way to fuel up on weekday mornings or can be enjoyed as part of a weekend brunch with the family.

Service Above Self

ROTARY CLUB OF WEST CHATHAM

Rotary Club of West Chatham was featured in Pooler Magazine’s first issue in 2006 and is still thriving in the Pooler Community today. Story by Jane Grismer

30

A

s the afternoon sun beats down on the 18th hole of The Club at Savannah Quarters golf course, just yards away, an intense debate ensues inside the Norman Grill of the country club. It’s Wednesday and Rotary Club of West Chatham members are discussing details about the upcoming Bill Wade Memorial Golf Tournament. Rotary meets weekly at noon and just like any other week, this group of passionate community servants and dedicated members of the Poolerarea community are displaying their enthusiasm. Each plays an integral role, contributing talents in their unique ways. As the discussion moves forward, it is apparent that each member also comes through the door with ideas and opinions. That’s what makes the Rotary Club of West Chatham so special, especially when it comes to past West Chatham Rotary President Bill Wade Sr., who died suddenly at the age of 72 about a year ago. His passing hit this Rotary Club hard and it still does. If the club was a quilt and each member represented a square, Bill Wade was the fluffy stuff in between the fabric

www.PoolerMagazine.com | September/October 2021

that binds everything together to serve the greater purpose. This year’s golf tournament will be on the morning of Friday, Nov. 19, at Savannah Quarters. The event promises to represent how Bill Wade was in this club—charitable, productive and fun while connecting others. It’s the West Chatham Rotary Club at its finest, where competition, camaraderie and community come together and the uniqueness of each member is melded together in unity and on golf carts. “That’s what is so beautiful about Rotary,” said Joye Jones, West Chatham Rotary president and the division manager of Sentry Management in Pooler. “I’ve been to international events where people from many cultures come together to celebrate a common mission.” And beautiful, too, on the local level. The Rotarians serve in the community every chance they can get. The club is very focused on Rotaract and Interact—Rotary International programs that invest in young leaders. Also in the community, West Chatham Rotarians recently assisted the West Chatham YMCA with the installation of a

playground. They also have partnered with the Pooler Lions Club in its local food drive. This past Memorial Day week, they volunteered and raised funds for the Flags for the Fallen event at the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force in the placement of 26,000 flags for each member of the Eighth Air Force killed in action during World War II. About Rotary Club Established in 2002, the Rotary Club of West Chatham was sponsored by the Effingham chapter because of the growth in the Pooler area. Frankie Fort, the former human resources director of the Savannah Morning News, is the only founding member currently active. Rotary International is an organization of over 1.2 million business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. They use mottoes such as "Service Above Self" and "One Profits Most Who Serves Best.”

For Rotary, the Four-Way Test is the cornerstone of all action. It has been for years, and it will be in the future. Of the things they think, say or do: • Is it the truth? • Is it fair to all concerned? • Will it build goodwill and better friendships? • Will it be beneficial to all concerned? “Rotary is a great organization that allows its members to give back to communities all over the world,” said Todd Freesemann, Commander of the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office. “If you are interested in serving others, Rotary and Rotary clubs are a great place to do it. It is fun and has a very meaningful impact on the world.” The membership of the West Chatham club has grown significantly over the last year, mostly as a result of the outreach and enthusiasm embodied within the club. The membership age ranges between mid-20s to mid-70s. “It's a close-knit group that truly prioritizes building goodwill in the community and being good Rotarians,” said Jacob Moon, senior preconstruction

manager of Choate Construction. “It is a great group of service minded professionals,” said Kathleen Russell, Rotary member and executive director of the West Chatham YMCA. What draws many members is the size of the club. “I love that it is a smaller group where the exchange of ideas and information can take place at a personal level. I would be lost in a group of 250, as some clubs have,” Jones said. “I believe the members genuinely care about each other and the community.” Perhaps Mathew Gaines—a past Rotary club president and the general manager of the Best Western Premier/Savannah Airport I-95 Pooler West—said it best: “Not only does it allow me to reach into other corridors of the business community and establish an abundance of connections, but to my surprise, it has also created valued friendships with people of all ages that I deeply admire. That’s the best part of all.” You can find the Rotary Club of West Chatham - Pooler, GA on Facebook, where you can see updates about upcoming events and send messages. n

Tips from Teachers for Choosing Quality Child Care As families across the country get ready for back-to-school season, many are also preparing to return to in-person work, which means finding the right program to support their children’s ongoing learning and development. According to “The Current State of Scientific Knowledge on Pre-Kindergarten Effects” report, choosing a quality preschool helps children start elementary school prepared for success. Knowing what to look for when choosing the right child care provider for your family can be stressful. However, these insights from KinderCare teachers with 40-plus years of classroom experience and Teacher of the Year honorees can help remove some of the mystery.

1

MAKE A LIST OF WHAT MATTERS MOST Before beginning your search, take some time to think about specific wants and needs for your family and children, whether that’s kindergarten-readiness, social and emotional development or convenient location. Write down the things that matter most to your family and refer to that list when you’re speaking with potential providers and asking questions.

2

PUT YOURSELF IN YOUR CHILD’S SHOES When you look around the classroom, be sure to look for child-sized furniture 32

and age-appropriate books and toys within children’s reach. This can help inspire their natural curiosity, encourage independence and build confidence. It’s also important to know how play is incorporated, how it’s facilitated and to see purposeful opportunities for play in each classroom. “There should be areas set up with enhancements that incorporate toys, blocks, art materials and dramatic play,” said KinderCare Teacher of the Year Sara Fouriner. “Teachers should share how they’re fostering social and emotional skills, executive function, problem solving, language and regulation skills in children by offering clear examples and putting evidence of learning on full display.”

3

ENSURE SAFETY AND QUALITY ARE PRIORITIES Health and safety took center stage in 2020 and remain top priorities for many families. Ask questions about each potential provider’s safety rules and practices in addition to their curriculum. It may also be beneficial to ask if their programs are accredited by a third-party agency, such as the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Accreditation means the center’s program is held to high standards and exceeds basic requirements set by state licensing.

www.PoolerMagazine.com | September/October 2021

“As a mother, grandmother and teacher, I believe families should look for a center that is clean and accredited,” said Dorothy Ellison, an early childhood teacher of 40 years. “Families should also inquire about child-to-teacher ratios, staff training and hiring practices, supervision, emergency prep, illness policies, communication and the quality of caregivers in each program.”

4

LOOK FOR TEACHERS WHO LOVE WHAT THEY DO Great teachers have a natural ability to connect with every child in their care. If children love their teachers and school is a safe, happy place for them, there are typically few limitations on what they can learn. “High-quality education starts with open, caring teachers who understand the expectations of the age group they represent,” said Dana Davin, a KinderCare Teacher of the Year and center director. “A genuine welcome when children arrive, a clean and engaging classroom and a culture of inclusion all stem from great teachers who believe in what they do.” For more tips on choosing the right child care for your family, visit kindercare.com. Is Botox the Right Therapy for You? When you hear the word Botox, what’s the first thing you think about? Youth Serum? Mystery? Vanity?

(smiles showing excessive amount of gum tissue due to hyper active upper lip). It can also be used to enhance body features such as the eyebrows— “Botox Eyebrow lift”—and lips—“Botox Lip Flip.”

Botox has been gaining a lot of traction and buzz lately for its cosmetic and therapeutic effects, especially trending in society and on social media sites. Botox to me as a clinician is a *magic* solution that simply smooths things out. It relaxes the muscles and reduces wrinkles all at the same time. Botox is not vanity, nor is it a mystery. It’s therapy. Scientifically, Botox is a purified protein derived from the Botulinum toxin A that inhibits the muscle fibers and reduces its activity and thus the activity of the skin attached to it. Botox acts specifically on the neuromuscular junction in muscle fibers and inhibit its muscle activity for at least three months at a time. With repeated treatments, this reduces wrinkles, pain, muscle activity and size, and therapeutic effects begin to last longer. Getting “too much Botox” will not lead to poison nor will it get you sick.

So We Don’t Have to Look so “Wrinkly” as We Age? There are two types of wrinkles: dynamic wrinkles and static wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles are wrinkles caused by muscular movements on the skin over time. These wrinkles disappear and reappear with muscle movements. Static wrinkles, on the other hand, are wrinkles caused by gravity. They are always there, no matter what kind of muscle movements or skin treatments you do. These wrinkles don’t go away and Botox will not work on them. Other methods such as fillers and PDO threads should be considered for treatment to these

Whether Botox is used to treat migraines, wrinkles, trigger points and/or muscle pain, one cannot separate the therapeutic effects from the cosmetic effects of Botox. With repeated treatments you could remain virtually “age-less.”

areas. Botox works on dynamic wrinkles only. That being said, pain and wrinkling around the forehead, eyes, nose & lips can significantly be reduced with the use of Botox therapy. • Botox therapy can also be used to treat migraine headaches. Many headaches are actually caused by muscles in and around the head and neck. So, treating these muscles provides profound relief for months, studies show. • Botox therapy can be used to treat myofascial pain and trigger points and provide therapeutic relief in the head and neck region. It can also treat bruxism and TMJ issues such as clenching & grinding. Studies show that around 90% of TMJ issues are muscular related. When you treat the muscles with Botox therapy you provide profound TMJ relief.

Awe! Botox... Let me say, I absolutely do love Botox. It has minimal side effects and a whole lot of therapeutic effects. The perfect combination and scenario for any therapy. According to the American Academy of Facial Esthetics, Botox can be quite safe and rewarding—I’m already hooked and a fan. If you want to know more about Botox and if it is the right treatment for you, schedule your free consultation today. DR. MISTY SEALE is the dentist behind iHeart Dental in Rincon. iHeart Dental has been in business for two years. Dr. Seale has been in the dental industry for seven years. She love helping people and transforming lives along the way.

• Botox therapy can be used to treat overactive sweating as well. A side effect to a smooth forehead is that you won’t sweat in that area on a hot day. • Botox therapy can be used to correct and achieve esthetic appeal, for instance correct an over-active gummy smile.

(912) 499-1133 www.iheartdental.com

Before proceeding, here are some nuances about Botox you should know: First of all, there is a delayed onset with Botox. Meaning it can take 3-10 days before effects can begin to manifest. So I say to my patients, “Don’t love it or hate it for 2 weeks and then we evaluate for enhancements.” Also, sometimes small bruising around the injection sites can occur. We discourage anyone getting Botox within 2 weeks of any major event like a wedding or family reunion. It is advised not to touch or manipulate your face right after getting Botox to prevent damage and migration of the solution into unwanted areas. The Botox protein is very fragile, and it’s very important to keep your skin cool and away from sunlight and heat for at least 24 hours after receiving Botox therapy. Even saunas and facial massages can damage the Botox protein. There is also a small chance of temporary eyebrow or eyelid drooping that can occur if the solution is manipulated accidentally in the wrong place. However, if it does, it is not harmful and it usually goes away within a couple weeks. The chances of this is very minimal but as with all procedures, it is important to assess all the risks and benefits of any procedure before moving forward.

nice not to have to go outside the city for services,” she stated.

Little did she know, a life-changing event was right around the corner. Barely six weeks into her administration, the coronavirus pandemic hit the community—and the entire world—as a catastrophic, plaguing storm. The mayor, with the support of other city officials, immediately answered their call to duty, taking action while enforcing guidelines and imposing city mandates to help keep the city as safe and healthy as possible. As the head of the city council, the mayor presides over meetings. She persists to maintain clarity, transparency and good communication between the city and its residents.

Running for Mayor As a practicing attorney, Benton decided to run for city council and was elected to the council team in 2004. She shared in the vision that the elected mayor, Mike Lamb, along with other council members and the city manager embraced. Aware of the city’s continuous growth, they foresaw a city surrounded by rapid commercialization and industrialization, a continual expansion of local services, along with overall infrastructure advancements. CARTER’S CORNER

ADVICE FROM A DOG’S PERSPECTIVE A TUG OF WAR Dear Carter, I love pulling on the leash when we go for walks. My mom pulls back at me and then I know the game is on—I pull even harder. I love it. But my mom shouts my name a lot and yanks sharply on the leash. I’m not sure if she’s playing with me or telling me I’m doing something she doesn’t like. Can you help me understand what’s going on? – Elbert, Kissimmee, FL Dear Elbert, Yes I can. The old tug-of-war is a fun game to play with a human but I don’t think walk time is the best time. I think your mom wants you to walk with what is called a “slack” leash. That’s when the leash is not pulled tight the entire time during your walk. I am a very intelligent dog, and educated—I’m obedient and can type and read, among other things. But lots of dogs need cues and clear directions from humans to do things their way. And I think you are a little confused about your mom’s actions and what you are expected to do. There are lots of good training websites available, many good books and excellent trainers for your mom to consult to help you understand her. She has obviously given you some mixed signals about pulling. The key for a human is to praise you when you allow slack in the leash when you are on a walk. And we all love praise, don’t we? To get that special head rub or a smile from a human is a special thing for us. One method is for your mom to immediately walk in a different direction when you start to pull. Then, when you start to walk to catch up with her, there will be slack on the leash and your mom will praise you. When you get out in front again and start pulling— boom!—she should change direction and again the leash will slacken until you catch back up. All of this is designed to train you to leave

that “slack” in the leash and not to pull. Other methods involve the human not moving when you pull and waiting you out. The human only starts walking when you aren’t pulling. Now, he or she must praise you when there is slack in the leash, so you get the idea. These training methods take time and your mom’s patience, however, so don’t be disappointed if it takes a while for you to catch on. Good luck!

A MOVE ON THE HORIZON Dear Carter, I’m seeing a lot of boxes around our house lately. It’s making me very anxious. Are my owners leaving me? – Phineas, a feline from Bloomingdale Dear Phineas, Many families are selling their homes right now. The market is hot! This can be very stressful for the family pet. Maybe you can share some of this advice with your owners so they can make your transition smoother and you can look forward to a happy new house where you can stretch and take a good cat nap. 1. Decide how you will move your pet. Is it a car ride? Do you have a crate to keep them save while traveling? This can reduce their level of anxiety if they are secure and safe during the trip. 2. Keep your pet in a comfortable, safe space on moving day. Consider boarding your pet or hiring a pet sitter for that day. You may also put them in one of the empty rooms until you are ready to transport your furry friend to your new home. 3. Maintain your pet’s routine. In the days and weeks leading up to your move and the time after you move in, it is important to keep the daily routine as consistent as possible. Take them on their regular walks, feed them their favorite foods and keep their bed and toys around so they begin to feel some normalcy among the chaos that is moving to a new home.

Savannah Kennel Club Aims High to Procure a Pet Disaster Relief Trailer

I

t is frightening to hear or read of a disaster striking and to see the pictures of the devastation wreaked upon a community. The sense of loss—the helplessness experienced by the families affected—can be overwhelming. In addition to the destruction of property and the loss of cherished items, many families also become separated from their pets. These animals are their companions and their family members. In the midst of everything else, families agonize over when, how or even if they will see their pets again. To this end, the Savannah Kennel Club (SKC) has recently made a commitment to provide Chatham County with a pet disaster relief trailer. Members of the SKC have taken on a challenging fundraising effort to provide the monies necessary to procure a pet disaster relief trailer that can rescue, house and care for at least 65 pets during the first few critical days after a disaster strikes. Part of the funds needed will come from a grant offered by the American Kennel Club, however the grant will only cover about a third of the monies needed. As a result, SKC will be hosting several major events, the proceeds of which will go toward the additional $19,000 need for the rescue trailer. In September, Savannah will be going to the dogs—literally. And for a good cause. The month is going to start out with a two-day Fast CAT event at Tom Triplett Park on September 11-12. It may be called Fast CAT, but it’s all about dogs. This sanctioned AKC event is open to both purebred and mixed breed dogs. Com48

Although the event will be for national rankings, there will be fun runs offered for those who would like to enter their couch companions and try the sport out. Sign up in advance or race day. You can compete whether your dog is of noble lineage or dubious parentage. The dog just needs to be 12 months of age. For those who prefer a slower pace, there is a golf tournament on September 22 to benefit SKC. This will include 18 holes of golf, a cart, lunch and prizes and will be held at The Club at Savannah Harbor on Hutchinson Island, across from River Street. The Club offers a beautiful and challenging, classically designed Sam Snead and Bob Cupp course. Enjoy the play while knowing that you’ve contributed to making the disaster relief trailer a reality.

Evident of the support this effort is receiving from the dog community in the area, SouthEast Disc Dogs stepped up and offered to host the golf tournament for the Savannah Kennel Club. The frisbee flying canines and handlers will also be part of WagFest, a huge, two-day dog weekend to be held on September 24-25 at Tom Triplett Park. Trainers, breeders, therapists, veterinarians, rescue organizations and so many others from across the low country are coming out to support SKC’s WagFest weekend. It will be two fun-filled days of demonstrations, dog sports, food, music, vendors, games and contests, and Meet The Breed—an introduction and informational session of various dog breeds. Kicking off WagFest will be The Fast and the Furriest 5K Run and 1-mile Fun Walk where runners/walkers and their dogs compete. Participating local rescue groups will have pups for those participants without canine partners, although you can still participate without a dog. There will be swag bags, medallions, bandanas and bragging rights, so don’t miss out. Altamaha Canine Consulting is SKC’s principal sponsor for WagFest and will be on hand to conduct demonstrations for attendees. There is no admittance fee and it will be family and dog friendly, so plan to be a part of the activities and to bringing the disaster relief trailer to our area! h For more information and event signups, visit www.savannahkennelclub.org or facebook.com/SavannahKennelClub.

The Best Race SWAG

A Pawsitively Fun Race Changed Two Lives Fur-ever Story by Donna Pfendler-Merkle

T

wo year old Ayra and her seven puppies were taken to Chatham County Animal Services (CCAS) when her owners no longer wanted her or her puppies. CCAS staff contacted Renegade Paws Rescue to pull the nursing mom and her pups from the shelter into a better environment. Ayra was scared, sad, and seemed to have given up hope of ever having a happy life. Jennifer (Jen) Taylor, Director and founder of Renegade Paws Rescue, took Ayra and her puppies to foster care, where they were given time to decompress and be examined by a veterinarian. After the puppies began eating food and were quickly adopted. Ayra was spayed and taken to an adult dog foster home. A Chance at a New Start It was the morning of the Fast and Furriest Race—a unique trail race that gave people an opportunity not only to run with their pups, but also to meet and run with a pup from a local rescue. Ayra was not supposed to go to the race, but was chosen at the last minute. “To be honest I wasn’t sure she would be much of a runner, “ Jen said. “Ayra was more of a playwith-my-doggie-friends dog.” Bambi Carrino, a traveling nurse stationed in Savannah, ran track and cross country in high school. She has run dozens of half marathons, two marathons, and two ultras. She jumped at the chance to run the Fast and Furriest Race not only because it was a trail run but because it gave her a chance to run with a rescue. “I had taken a few opportunities in LA and DC to take rescues for hikes, visit in shelters, etc. to fill the ‘pet void’ I was experiencing as a travel nurse.” “I was actually supposed to run with a different dog. Jen said that even though Arya was, ‘short, thick, and didn’t look like much of a runner,’ that she’d ‘get the job done.’ Which is exactly how I feel about myself as a runner. In fact, I think all I said to Jen was ‘SAME!’.”

Bambi and Ayra were a perfect match. “I am sure I loved her before we even took a single step. We were either running or playing in the puddles and tide, which is exactly my speed and philosophy on running. You could tell she was thrilled to be out there and it was infectious. Being able to focus on her made the five miles fly by because I took in my surroundings more instead of being in my head or feeling uncomfortable.” The purpose of Savannah Kennel Club’s Fast and Furriest Race and the Paws to Pavement Walking events—in conjunction with Fleet Feet of Savannah—is to promote the importance of

heart healthy exercise for humans and dogs. “This was the inaugural Fast and Furriest Race. Organizing this event was a dream come true bringing my two loves together—dogs and running,” said Donna Merkle, Race Director and Community Outreach Coordinator for the Savannah Kennel Club. “I remember Bambi telling me about her running partner and that it was the best race she had ever run. It brought tears of joy to my eyes—this is exactly why we put so much effort into this event.” “As an avid runner and dog lover myself, Fleet Feet Savannah could not pass up the chance to partner with the Kennel Club on this freakin’ awesome race,” said Mike Nadeau, owner of Fleet Feet Savan-

nah and Pooler. “Our running and walking communities look forward to our events with the pups. We are proud of the part we play in bringing these communities together.” Ayra went back to her foster home, but Bambi could not forget about Ayra. She knew she wanted to adopt Ayra the day of the race but wanted to make sure it was the right decision for her and Ayra. Bambi talked about her for two days to whoever would listen, and her friends and family encouraged her to adopt Ayra. “!t was very important to me to be a good, responsible pet owner. They said my amount of concern and anxiety over being a good dog mom proved that I was ready, and I am so glad I listened! I let Jen know on Monday that I wanted to be Zahra’s (formerly Ayra) furever home and on Tuesday, October 1, she became the best race swag I ever earned!” Today Zahra is living her best life. She travels with Bambi across the country on nursing assignments. She has been to Chattanooga, NYC, New Orleans, and now Tampa. Bambi has learned to be patient with herself and Zahra after a move. “I have to give myself grace and know that I’m trying my best by her, even if the situation may not be ideal. I don’t want anyone going into adopting thinking they got the wrong dog or are the wrong parent just because things aren’t perfect 100% of the time. There’s a lot to consider before adopting, but it’ll always be a work in progress whether they have a pure bred or a rescue! Despite the work, Zahra has brought so much love and light to my life and I wouldn’t change a thing!” Bambi and Zahra continue to run trails and hike wherever they go. Zahra is also a great soccer player and Frisbee catcher extraordinaire. Her absolute favorite things in the world, though, are bubbles and belly rubs! h

4 Tips to Prepare a Pet-Friendly Fire Safety Plan

A

fter more than a year of nearly constant companionship, many pet parents are preparing to leave their pets at home while they transition back to the office. With more time away from home, it’s important for families to be prepared in the event of a fire. As COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, a vast majority of pet owners (91%) said they will leave pets home alone more often, according to a survey commissioned by Kidde and conducted online by The Harris Poll. Of those, more than 1 in 3 (35%) said they are nervous about doing so. According to the American Veterinary Medical Foundation, 500,000 pets suffer from smoke inhalation and 40,000 die due to home fires. “We know people will do anything to keep their furry family safe,” said Sharon Cooksey, fire safety educator for Kidde. “We’re committed to ensuring pet owners are equipped with the right products, resources, tools and confidence to prepare their family members—both two- and four-legged—in the event of an emergency as we transition to more time out of the home.”

To help protect your pets from the dangers of home fires and train them to respond positively to the sound of smoke or carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, consider these tips from Kidde:

1

INCLUDE PETS IN FIRE ESCAPE PLANS Pets should always be included in a family’s evacuation plan. Stay aware of their typical hiding spots or locations where they often nap in case you must evacuate quickly. When you are not home, keep pets in areas near entrances where firefighters can easily find them.

2

TRAIN PETS TO APPROPRIATELY RESPOND TO ALARMS. In the event of an emergency, ensure your pets are familiar with the sound of smoke alarms. According to celebrity pet trainer Sara Carson, you should pair the sound with a command that instructs your pets to proceed “outside” or whichever term you use to identify the best way for them to exit the home. As you practice the routine, reward your pets for positive responses.

“As a proud dog mom of five super collies, I know pets are like our family, so it’s important we take proactive steps to keep them safe in the event of a home fire,” Carson said. “To successfully train your pets, make sure you keep training fun, short and always end on a good note.”

USE WINDOW CLINGS TO ALERT FIRST RESPONDERS In an emergency, first responders need to be able to quickly assess the number of pets in a home. Consider attaching a non-adhesive decal to a window near your front door to let rescuers know how many animals are inside.

4

MAINTAIN SMOKE ALARMS Smoke alarms must be replaced after 10 years. In addition to testing alarms once each week, check the manufacturing date on your alarms to make sure they are current. If they are older than 10 years, it’s time to replace them. For a full demonstration on how to train your pet to respond positively to a smoke alarm, visit kidde.com/petsafety. h
