SEVERE CHEST PAIN IS NOT NORMAL. Don’t let heart attack symptoms be the elephant in the room! An estimated 735,000 Americans suffer a heart attack each year, and it remains the No. 1 killer of men and women. Too often, it’s because they didn’t recognize the symptoms or ignored the warning signs. While chest pain and pressure are the most common symptoms, shortness of breath, breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, lightheadedness, back and jaw pain may also indicate a problem. Heart attack is a heavy subject. Know your risks and the warning signs, and then talk about your heart with your healthcare provider.

Full Speed Ahead Spring has sprung, and we are full speed ahead! This is a time when all of our creative juices start flowing. The days are longer, the sun is brighter, the birds are singing….. even my staff is singing. March marked the nine year anniversary of Independence Day Publishing, Inc. It doesn’t seem real to me. Some days, it feels just like yesterday when I started this journey. Other days, I feel like I have been doing it for 100 years! This company has awarded me some pretty cool things over the years. It has given me the opportunity to reunite with old friends, make new friends, be a part of an awesome community….and learn about the best of the best of Pooler, Georgia. As many of you know, IDP started three magazines in three months, almost nine years ago, Effingham Magazine, Pooler Magazine and Richmond Hill Magazine. Then, five years ago, we Julie Hales, PUBLISHER launched a magazine in Beaufort, South Carolina, Beaufort Lifestyle. I was asked many times…”Where do you go from here?” Well, that is a question I can finally answer….5 years later. In March, we launched a brand new magazine, Chatham Isles Living. We are so excited! The new magazine covers Whitemarsh, Oatland, Talahi, Wilmington and Tybee islands. Having grown up in this area and lived here all my life, I have traveled those islands for years. There are some pretty cool characters that live there…and we hope to find each and every one of them on the pages of our newest publication. I would like to thank my wonderful staff for helping me get this new magazine on the shelves…you guys are amazing. Your creativity, your talent, your loyalty….IDP is where it is today because of you….Lane Leopard, Lea Allen, DiAnna Jenkins and Peg Beekman! So, where do I go from here? Who knows? Only one thing is for sure, it is full speed ahead!

Vance Smith:
Life after “The Voice”
V
ance Smith is back in Pooler from a whirlwind experience on NBC’s hit show, The Voice. He had to outsing thousands of other talented singers to get on the show, and he plans to continue his musical career with the momentum he has gained from the publicity. Unlike other singing competitions, the celebrity judges on The Voice have their backs turned during the auditions so they can judge performers solely on their singing ability. While Smith’s good looks and charm may give him a career boost in the real world, he earned his spot on the show with his voice alone. By the time he did the blind audition, there were only three spots left and droves of singers yet to perform. Somehow, though, he made it through the song and fell to the ground when both Pharrell Williams and Christina Aguilera turned their chairs for him. Smith chose Aguilera over Williams because of her vocal chops, and she gave him some valuable advice during her time as his coach. The fact that she is a super star gave her helpful words even more clout. “She just wanted you to let go and just have fun,” he recalls. “Christina was definitely intense at some points.” Smith turned out to be a fan of Aguilera’s intense coaching style and welcomed her constructive criticism. “She didn’t let up at all, but I think that is the best part of the whole experience with her.” He wanted a push to take his vocals and his mindset to the next level, and that is exactly what Aguilera gave him. Perhaps one of Smith’s most admirable qualities is that he never lets his ego get in the way of his desire to grow as an artist. “I knew I needed work, vocally,” he says when explaining why he chose Aguilera to be his coach. “I wanted to learn.” Fortunately for Smith, the entire experience on the show was a learning experience. Not only did he learn vocal techniques from a legendary diva in the business, but he also learned about stage presence and singing with a partner onstage. His partner, Koryn Hawthorne, ending up defeating him in the battle round, but he says he is happy for her and that they still communicated. “We really got a chance to rehearse with each other...and just really connect as artists. I think that was the best part of everything,” says Smith. Hawthorne ended up knocking Smith out of the battle rounds, but he takes it in stride. After all, it was an Ariana Grande song. “I just knew I was going to have to bring it and not complain about it,” he says. “I definitely know I gave it everything I had, and I don’t regret anything I did onstage.” With each outcome,
Smith finds a way to learn and grow. He plans to take what he has learned and make a name for himself. “I never understood how the music industry worked, but when I was on “The Voice”, they broke everything down,” explains Smith. “Without a plan as an artist, you won’t last long at all.” And now his plan is to use what he has learned on the show and focus on his musical career. “Whatever benefits me as an artist and keeps me in people’s
12 May/June 2015 | www.PoolerMagazine.com
faces--that’s exactly what I’m going to do,” he says. From managing his website to making T-shirts, Smith is working on his brand as well as music. Since performing on “The Voice”, Smith has gotten into the wedding singing business and has written an original song for iTunes in addition to his two iTunes songs from the show. Though he is only 22, he has come a long way in a short time, and has no plans on stopping any time soon. As much fun as he has performing, Smith also looks forward to working behind the scenes. “I want to write songs for people and work with different artists,” he says. “That will keep me motivated to see how different artists think and to be focused on other things that just myself.” Ideally, he plans to not only sing, but to keep composing and producing original songs for himself as well as others. He wants to learn all he can from other talented artists. His ultimate goal? To be a professional singer-songwriter and producer. “I have a home studio and I write music almost every day,” he says. One thing is certain; Smith is definitely not a stranger to hard work. He is a trained diesel mechanic and he also owns his own pressure washing business. He has accomplished more by the age of 22 than some people accomplish in a lifetime. Most recently, he performed the National Anthem for Tanger Outlets’ Grand Opening in April. It was his first performance since returning to Pooler. “It was definitely an honor to have the opportunity to sing in front of the owner, Steve Tanger, and the Property Brothers,” says Smith. But even with all of his success, Smith remains humble and thankful for his blessings. “Faith and hard work will get you anywhere,” he says. “Everything I do is based off my faith in Jesus Christ. I know I couldn’t do or accomplish the things that I’ve done without Him.” Smith also credits his family with encouraging him to get where he is today. He calls his mother “the rock” of his career. “A lot of opportunities wouldn’t have come without God working through her to get it out through me,” he says. “And without my dad, I wouldn’t even know what music really means, because he gave me that first earful of music as a young child.” Smith also thanks the city of Pooler itself for being so supportive. He speaks of the first time he was featured as a local artist in Pooler Magazine and sees how far he has come. “I always used to run from living in a small city, but you can really use it to your advantage,” he says. “If you have a city behind you, what more do you need?” As he starts the next chapter in his life after “The Voice”, he knows there are bigger and newer dreams to achieve. His motivation has never been stronger. “The Voice was a preparation for something bigger that’s to come,” Smith says. “That’s why I embraced every moment.” He encourages up-and-coming singers to follow their dreams if music is truly their passion. With the internet and social media, all it takes is passion and a good work ethic to get noticed. Smith says the key to successful auditions is going it with “humble confidence,” which is an attribute that Smith exudes himself. He is as down to earth as he is talented. “Overall, I’m just humbled to be in this position in my life,” he adds. “I’m just embracing these moments and making the best of them.” Vance Smith is Pooler’s local Rhythm and Blues artist with national recognition. When asked what advice he would give to others who want to follow their musical dreams, he simply says, “Just keep going. Never give up.” And that is exactly how this hometown headliner is going to make his musical dreams come true.
“Faith and hard work will get you anywhere,” he says. “Everything I do is based off my faith in Jesus Christ. I know I couldn’t do or accomplish the things that I’ve done without Him.”

I
t was a mild spring day for southeast Georgia, the kind you take advantage of by sitting outside with a glass of sweet iced tea. Being that spring break was in full swing, Barbara Rawlings wasn’t wasting a moment of the time she had away from her daily bus driving responsibilities. Seated beneath the large Live Oak in her front yard amidst a colorful backdrop of Azalea shrubs, she fondly recalled a lifetime of cherished memories as the oak tree’s pollen fell heavy all about. Barbara Rawlings was born in 1936, just as the world was recovering from an economic collapse. Her family had settled on Magazine Avenue in Savannah, which is where she lived until she was thirteen. It wasn’t until years later that she understood the significance of the area she grew up in, though. She recalled becoming a tour guide for Savannah, where she worked for ten years, and discovering that her own childhood home sat at the site of a Revolutionary War battle. Through the years she’d assumed that Magazine Avenue was named after magazines you read, but she discovered it was actually named for powder magazines and her family’s back yard held a water well for soldiers. Delighted yet perplexed she questioned her father as to why he’d never mentioned the history, and he told her that back then they were interested in making a living, not knowing the history. After she married her husband, Bill Rawlings, Barbara and he were able to secure thirty acres of land, where he built their home. She remembered that they’d always had gardens and flowers. Her parents always planted a row of flowers in their vegetable garden as well. Barbara said that she found out later that was so the bees would come. Being that she’d always been surrounded by nature and loved it, it seemed only fitting that she would become part of the Pooler Garden Club in the late 1980s. She joined with her sister, Dale Rickman, at the persistent request of Bernice Hicks, the president of the club at that time. Barbara and her sister had previously worked in the N.O.G.S., which is a tour of hidden gardens north of Gwinnett Street in Savannah, so they followed their interests and became members of the club, which was little more than a club for flower arranging and plant identification back then. The Pooler Garden Club is now a large part of Barbara Rawlings’s life. She is the president of the club now, though she says she tries to convince others to take the seat every year. The history of the club begins in the 1930s. Though World War II caused the club to dissolve for a short time, the 1950s brought reorganization to the Pooler Garden Club and it steadily grew from that point. “I just feel an obligation to the people that have started before me, you know, that see the beauty in what God’s given us. This garden that he’s given us here on Earth to tend to,” Barbara thoughtfully said while explaining why she remains dedicated to the club. She maintains that she is the one who is always learning from the other members of their club, and that she contributes little. Barbara candidly recalled with a chuckle, “I think the first mistake I made was at the flower show. You had to take and put flowers into flower arrangements. I used some, what we call swamp lilies but they’re actually beautiful Black-eyed Susans that grow up to fourteen foot tall, and the lady at the Empire Fair Grounds said, ‘You can’t put these in, these aren’t anything but weeds!’ But they were beautiful so that was my first mistake.” She used this example to express how much she learns from the ladies that make up the Pooler Garden Club. Rawlings said that many of the ladies know the botanical names for a lot of the local plants and flowers and that fact amazes her because she only knows the “old-fashioned” names that people used to use. “It’s just amazing the people that are involved,” Barbara proudly and fondly said as she spoke of her fellow club friends. The Pooler Garden Club has gone through quite the transfor-

mation from its early roots, according to Barbara. They now make it a point to travel about and make new discoveries and learn new things in any garden or farm they’re welcomed into. They most recently met at the Bamboo farm, but quite regularly participate in a variety of nature related events. They participated one year in the Hidden Gardens Of Pooler, and Barbara was simply amazed at the beauty that was found hidden behind walls and fences. Gardens that people meticulously tended and were very proud of could be found in surprising places. Another of Barbara’s exciting field trips with the Pooler Garden Club crew was just before St Patrick’s Day. They went to Bethesda Academy Farm and Gardens where they were able to meet a young man from Dublin, Ireland. “He was jam up and oh so knowledgeable about everything,” Rawlings said regarding the information on organics that the gentleman spoke with them about. She feels the club members have learned much in the way of organic farming recently with this trip, as well as the one they took to Heritage Organic Farms on Hwy 30. Barbara Rawlings is using the knowledge she’s gained and passing it on too! Her own field has been barren for seven years, coincidentally the length of time needed to cleanse the soil of fertilizers and impurities, but her son plans to plant a garden on it very soon. She proudly speaks about his passion for planting and working the land and is excited to see what he will do with it and the knowledge passed down to him. In addition to garden planting, spring brings a time for plant swapping as well as festivals. Barbara Rawlings was very eager to see what this year would hold in store for the Pooler Garden Club. She recently visited Macon’s Cherry Tree Festival where she bought a Cherry tree that boasts a double flower that she adores. The garden club has planted quite a few cherry trees all over Pooler and also has a prized “Pooler Rose” they are proud of. Rawlings said she’s looking forward to the club’s annual picnic in June. Each year they try to do something “different,” and last year they traveled to Charleston, South Carolina to visit the Tea Plantation. The highlight of that trip for Barbara was seeing the Angel Tree that grows a mile from the plantation. With a tone of amazement and wonder Rawlings recalled, “The branches just go out and swoop down and oh... just beautiful. I’d never heard of it and my sister lives there!” It’s these types of trips and experiences that have made participation in the Pooler Garden Club such a fun and unique experience and it’s excitement she easily conveys. “I feel like I’m the one that’s been blessed, though. I really have been,” said a thoughtful Rawlings as the afternoon train passed - sounding its long whistle. Referring to the beautiful plants and trees that surround and fill her property, Rawlings mentioned that very few of them were bought and that has been one of the biggest blessings. Also a blessing is how simply giving of your time and learning and participating in the community can have a domino effect and inspire others to continue the path. “It’s just a miracle how everything keeps revolving around,” she said as she spoke of how doing good things as part of this club has brought about good things in turn. Though she humbles herself and denies much in the way of contribution, the Pooler Garden Club would no doubt be a dull place without her lively personality and knowledge of Savannah and Pooler’s rich history.

TEEN SPOTLIGHT:
Nikhil Patel Story by KATRICE WILLIAMS Photos by MONICA BAILEY
S
tellar is typically used to reference the bright, beautiful stars in the sky, but it may also refer to one having the qualities of a star. Synonyms include outstanding, excellent and superb. Nikhil Patel, an 18-year old senior at Jenkins High School, is easily characterized by these very impressive and distinct qualities. Nikhil is part of the school’s engineering program. He has been a student there for about three years after he and his family relocated to the area from Mississippi, where he spent a good deal of his life. Nikhil’s interest in engineering surfaced just before high school. In fact, Nikhil had long wanted to pursue a career in pharmacy or pediatrics. However, in 8th grade, a robotics team visited Nikhil’s middle school in Mississippi. He was intrigued by all they did and thought it was quite “cool.” Following their incredibly memorable robotics display, Nikhil was certain of his new quest. After learning that his family was moving to the local area, Nikhil diligently researched the various high schools in the area to find out what each had to offer. He knew that he wanted to attend a school that specialized in engineering. He mentions, “When I moved here, I wanted to go to a school with a robotics team; I found that Jenkins had a robotics team.” After starting at Jenkins, Nikhil joined the robotics team right away. Nikhil’s career path is mechanical engineering. He explains that it is very expansive, allowing for countless career opportunities in the field. He comments that he “likes the handson involvement with it.” He enjoys the many dynamics, excitement and creativity associated with it. Regarding it as a career, he suggests, “You’re not doing paperwork all day.” He later notes, “You’re actually doing something physically, that’s fun to do.” Nikhil is looking forward to attending Georgia Tech after high school, a school nationally and internationally recognized for its engineering program. Yes, he’s going to be a Yellow Jacket. More so, he is tremendously excited about their robotics team, the Robojackets, which he plans to join, of course. Surely, Nikhil enjoys his engineering endeavors, but he hasn’t given up on his childhood aspirations of doing something in the medical field. This phenomenal young man aspires to, one day, combine his engineering expertise with medical technology. He’d like to design robots that will perform advanced medical procedures and surgeries. Nikhil understands that the medical field is constantly evolving each and every day. Many activities and procedures of old are becoming somewhat obsolete as medical professionals find new ways to do things even more efficiently and effectively. With that said, it’s no surprise that Nikhil’s favorite subjects have been math and science, which he does very well in. Actually, he has done very well in all his courses over his lifetime. Obviously, Jenkins High School’s Engineering Program is very noteworthy, having a high standard for excellence. Nonetheless, Nikhil not only gained admittance in the specialty program, he has been able to perform at an impressively high level over the years. He’s definitely deemed as an elite individual by many who know him. Therefore, it’s no surprise that he was bestowed the
highest distinction given to an upcoming graduate—something that he has worked very hard for. With a phenomenal 4.0 grade point average, he is the Herschel V. Jenkins 2014-15 Valedictorian…what an honor! That’s not all! Aside from academic excellence and planning for a wonderful future, Nikhil still finds time to participate in numerous activities within his school. In addition to the robotics team, Nikhil is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Technology Student Association, Science Olympiad and Sons of Sophistication. Nikhil has been able to give back to the community through community service activities in several organizations. He has even been part of groups raising awareness about the field of engineering, particularly to girls. The goal is to encourage more girls to pursue the engineering field of study. It’s believed that every extraordinary student has been privileged to have at least one extraordinary teacher in their lives. Nikhil recalls a certain middle school math teacher, Ms. Bland, who consistently motivated him and showed that she cared. He tells that she even checked on him when he left middle school. He recalls, “She kept an eye on me.” It’s often said that an apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Nikhil graciously accredits his family members with being his biggest advocates and role models. He points out, “They’ve always been there to support me no matter what I choose; they’ll back me up, whatever I choose, 100%.” He goes on to add, “Anything I want, they’ll try to do it.” They are very proud of him. He even smiles as he mentions that his dad, Pradeep, already has a celebration poster made up for his graduation. As for his mom, Divya, she’s very delighted to have always had such a super scholar as her son. Even his 10-yearold little sister, Nidhi, is really pleased with her big brother and wouldn’t trade him for the world. They’re not the only ones with delightful and heartwarming thoughts of Nikhil. His grandfather, Mohan Patel, and grandmother, Manu Patel, couldn’t be more pleased with their grandson. Regarding his family’s feeling about all his achievements, Nikhil asserts, “They’re all happy.” He has truly had a great support system through the years. Nikhil also has some good advice for the younger generation. He states, “Don’t give up; just keep trying.” However, he says, “Don’t envelop yourself in your work completely; have that spare time to where your mind is fresh.” He went on to comment, “Make sure to have fun once and a while; it’s good to keep that balance.” Nikhil himself enjoys his free time. “I’m a big sports fan; I like watching sports,” he points out. Nikhil likes to play tennis on occasion. He actually played tennis during his freshman year in high school. Nikhil is not only extremely intelligent but also appears to be very level-headed, respectful and kind. Furthermore, while accomplishing such noteworthy achievements and encompassing many other exemplary attributes, Nikhil is bound to have a bright future. Though Nikhil understands that he has an exemplary amount of accomplishments, he notes, “It’s small steps to an even bigger goal later in life.” It’s apparent that Nikhil is quite a stellar young man. It’s also evident that he will continue to reach for the stars. www.PoolerMagazine.com | May/June 2015

PASTOR MATT HEARN
MAKING A DIFFERENCE Alongside
A
nyone who knows Pastor Matt Hearn of the Gateway Community Church is familiar with his meaningful yet unconventional ways as a pastor. He has experienced a spectacular level of ministerial growth over the past years. At first glance and upon conversing with him, it’s obvious that Pastor Matt does not exemplify the typical image of a pastor. In jeans and a t-shirt, his usual attire, Pastor Matt’s down-toearth and welcoming nature allows almost anyone to be comfortable around him. Pastor Matt was born in Lexington, Kentucky but spent many years in North Georgia. He recalls his very first mission trip—he was 17 years old. Not realizing his ministerial calling at the time, he did know that he was tremendously inspired by the experience. He enjoyed working with young people most of all, so he began to serve in his church youth ministry. At the time, he was already very acquainted with ministry. His dad, Steve Hearn, was a pastor. Furthermore, his grandparents were missionaries who spent an impressive

amount of time in Kenya. He even mentions his uncle, Dave Crosby, who was a missionary in Colombia, South America. Regarding his family’s service in ministry, Pastor Matt says, “That’s something that’s been in my family for a long time.” Pastor Matt spent four years at Asbury College in Kentucky pursuing a psychology degree. Being unfulfilled with that career choice, he went to seminary school. Having a sincere heart for young people and desiring to reach as many as possible, Pastor Mat eventually relocated to Columbus, Georgia where he began a teaching career at Calvary Christian School. He understood the profound impact that teachers can have on their students. He continued his youth ministry alongside his teaching. Pastor Matt was very comfortable leading the kids, but had been apprehensive about becoming a pastor—an actual shepherd. He admits, “I was really fighting my calling to be a pastor.” He goes on to say, “Looking back, it was what God was moving on me.” He mentions several children in his ministry admiring his sermons. He recalls
his thoughts at the time. “If you can keep 7th and 8th graders entertained, you can probably do this.” He and his wife, Lori, prayed about the steps they needed to take in their lives in order to fulfill their destinies. They soon became members of Pierce Chapel United Methodist Church in Columbus, Georgia. Pastor Matt felt that it was “a really great church and good for him.” He recalls, “It was the first time I’d actually saw a church that was healthy.” He adds, “I’d seen how dysfunctional and broken churches could be and how that really hurt people.” He also comments, “Pierce Chapel was great because it allowed me to see that ministry could be done in a way that brought broken people in and healed them.” In time, Pastor Matt began to identify with his calling even more, noting, “God was moving my heart.” He and his wife later moved to Savannah, where they joined White Bluff United Methodist Church; he joined the ministerial team. “I loved the people at White Bluff; it’s a good church.” However, it was on Pastor Matt’s heart

Gateway Community Church that “God was calling him to something different.” He would soon find that difference. He always appreciated a church leader that anyone would feel comfortable approaching for help—a person who was relatable and reachable. He wanted to reach as many people as possible through the Gospel of Jesus Christ while never compromising very essential biblical principles. He decided to obey his calling; he found himself in Pooler where he began to establish a new church. In 2006, Gateway Community Church was started. Pastor Matt tells how the church got its name and slogan. He wanted something that was welcoming to anyone seeking to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Therefore, “Gateway” became the favorite of him and others in his ministry. They also decided on a very compatible and fitting slogan: “Same Bible, different church.” He says the mission of Gateway is to “invest and invite.” He feels that everyone should “invest in the relationships that God has given us—invest in your families, invest in your friends, invest in
your co-workers; be a loving, kind person.” He states, “When the opportunity arises, invite those people into a relationship with Christ; that’s what it’s all about.” Regarding Gateway, he remarks, “We want to be invested in our community; we want to be a church that if the church closes its doors, Pooler, Georgia would miss Gateway Community Church.” He tells a story of a young lady, far from a consistent church-goer, who visited a church for the first time. She was unacquainted with the procedures of service. It was quite obvious that she wasn’t wearing fancy church attire. She seemed to feel uncomfortable and left out. Due to this, she was apprehensive about ever attending again. Over time, Pastor Matt knew that he wanted to create a very particular type of church. He emphasizes, “I wanted to create a church whose culture could love a young woman like that—could love people who maybe felt a little outside of the normal church life.” He goes on to say, “My hope is that the young lady will find her way out to Pooler and find the love and
grace of God.” Pastor Matt recalls another occasion that he was asked about the dress code by a young lady who thought about visiting Gateway. However, she admitted that she had no “church clothes.” Being in his jeans and a casual shirt at the time, he responded, “This is what I preached in this morning.” Pastor Matt mentions, “It frustrates me to think that people that might go to church and might get connected to God and have their lives transformed feel that way.” He understands the mindset of many people who feel, “I wanna look my best to come and worship God.” He also understands that God is very loving, compassionate and faithful. He loves us and wants us to serve Him in spite of whether we have an impressive wardrobe. His main objective is for souls to be saved and set free through His Son, Jesus Christ— through the redemption and reconciliation that only He provides. Pastor Matt admits that “sometime we create a culture where people feel left out.” Since its inception, Gateway has experienced a remarkable amount of growth. www.PoolerMagazine.com | May/June 2015

“Many are called but few are chosen.” ~Jesus Christ
Pastor Matt recalls Gateway’s humble beginnings. It started out in the Pooler YMCA. “The Y was a real blessing to us for a long time and we’re thankful for the relationship.” However, he knew that more room was needed for the constant level of growth at the church. Presently, Gateway has services at the Godley Station School on Sunday mornings—a 9:30 a.m. service and an 11:00 a.m. service. The church is grateful to have a lot more room. He further says, “It’s not how big or how many, it’s about Jesus.” He thinks, “Jesus, how many do you want us to reach; that’s our goal.” The church is now in the process of purchasing property on Pine Barren Road. Pastor Matt says, “We’re excited about it.” Gateway currently has almost 800 in attendance each Sunday. That’s a huge rise from their first official service of about 144 people. More importantly, 73 individuals committed to Christ this year. Another campus was opened in 2010 in Effingham: Gateway-Effingham Church under the leadership of Pastor Andy Lamon. Pastor

Matt feels that his church tries to invest as much as possible in the community; the church takes great pride in benevolence work. They partner with other churches to participate in Loaves & Fishes, an interfaith food ministry through which about 150 families are fed each month. Additionally, Gateway is involved in the Backpack Buddy Program. Here, $3 is given on one Sunday each year for every person that goes to Gateway’s Sunday morning church service. The church also participates in overseas missions and even sponsors an orphanage in Haiti. Beside every blessed individual, there are many others that God has allowed to help them along the way. Pastor Matt speaks highly of the people that have helped the church be what it is today. He says, “I hung in there long enough for God to send the right people around me to help us get where He wanted us to be.” Pastor Matt speaks fondly of the people that he’s privileged to work with. He even introduced one of the assistant pastors,
Executive Pastor Sam Martin. Pastor Matt talks about the high level of excellence that Pastor Martin has brought to Gateway through all of his contributions of service. Pastor Matt speaks of the sources of much of his inspiration. He mentions his father, stating, “My father was my greatest mentor.” He adds, “If you ever heard my dad preach, I’m a chip off the old block.” He also mentions his uncle, Dave Crosby, who tremendously influenced his life as a young man. “Following God’s calling has always been a clear thing in my family,” he asserts. He would surely never forget the apples of his eyes: his wife and little ones. He loves Lori and their two children, Jack and Emma, to pieces! Pastor Matt really enjoys what he does. He’s confidently anticipating a bright future for Gateway. He knows that he has come a long way, but he still has so much further to go. It’s quite apparent that he is truly making a difference.

Powell Harrelson: There’s No Place Like Home... Base That Is
POOLER RECREATION SPOTLIGHT
I
Story by SHANNON ROBINSON • Photos by MONICA BAILEY
It was in the early 1980s when Powell Harrelson’s affinity for sports met his father’s desire for teaching responsibility and philanthropy. His father, Powell Harrelson, Sr. was president of the Pooler Recreation Association at the time, and the Harrelson family spent nearly every Saturday at the park. It was back before Pooler Recreation Department was supported by the City of Pooler, and the park depended solely on those who volunteered for its maintenance and care. Powell Harrelson and his family were among quite a few dedicated families that gave of their time, and when Harrelson wasn’t playing sports he was busy maintaining the fields that he loved or helping in various other areas where work was needed. It would be these early life lessons, around the age of twelve, which resonated the most with Powell Harrelson – ultimately igniting a passion for public service and altruism. “I know that the Pooler Recreation Department can change kids’ lives, and that is why I volunteer.” Harrelson related as he spoke of his childhood experiences with the park. He noted that the volunteer coaches he had growing up continue to be men he respects to this day. “I believe they helped shape me into the adult I’ve become,” a grateful Harrelson insisted. A sincere man, as many who know him would say, who not only continues to freely volunteer his time at Pooler Recreation Department, but who also encourages others to do the same – advocating for more community involvement. As a retired sergeant of the Pooler Police Department, Powell Harrelson obviously takes his ideals of social responsibility and philanthropy personally. For sixteen years he protected and served the city that he loves and has called home his entire life. Even now, working for the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, Harrelson continues to make public safety a top priority. Though personality helps to dictate a chosen career and path in life, Powell Harrelson attributes his character and many of his life decisions to the virtues and moral obligations set forth by his family, and to the influence of those childhood coaches who simply chose to volunteer. Practicing what he’s preaches, Powell Harrelson continues to volunteer with the Pooler Recreation Department – as if perpetuating a family legacy. It is an endeavor he both enjoys and looks forward to passing on. He and his wife, Terri, have three sons who are all involved with baseball through Pooler Recreation Department. More than a tradition, volunteering and playing baseball with Pooler Recreation Department has become a passion for the Harrelson family. Each of their three sons has played or is currently playing baseball, and their love for the game and spirit of community is always evident. Christopher, Powell and Terri Harrelson’s fifteen-year-old son, used to play for Pooler Recreation Department like his father and brothers. Now that he is over the age of participation there, he volunteers with his father. As is tradition
in the Harrelson family, Christopher now helps his father coach Pooler Recreation T-ball. The T-ball team is where the youngest of Powell Harrison’s three sons, four-year-old Trenton, has started to learn the family’s favorite sport. As any parent with a child in T-ball knows, it is difficult to teach such young children to stand still, let alone learn the game of baseball. Therefore, Harrelson is able to teach his eldest and youngest sons a new skill in the sport within one season while playing and volunteering at the Pooler Recreation Department. Never slowing down from February through November in a given year, Powell Harrelson also volunteer coaches his middle son’s, Jesse’s, twelve and under (12u) Pooler Recreation Department baseball team, as well as assistant coaches Jesse’s Pooler travel baseball team (The Zombies). Aside from each of the aforementioned teams, Harrelson advises and accompanies his son, Jesse, as he participates on the All-Star team he’s been chosen for the last three consecutive years, and Harrelson attends practices and games as Jesse participates on the Oglethorpe Charter School’s baseball team. For a majority of the year this family lives and breathes baseball, which is why Harrelson’s continued passion for the sport is so obvious – he simply loves it. “My goal is simple,” Powell Harrelson volunteered regarding what he tries to accomplish with the Pooler Recreation Department teams that he volunteers with, “We teach the fundamentals of baseball as early as T-ball and then continue to do so as the kids move up.” With a matter-of-fact approach, the experience of having three children at different levels in the game and, of course, a love for the sport, he is able to depart indispensable knowledge where baseball is concerned. His approach is special, because he does so in a fun and patient way – a life skill that few possess and fewer practice. As such, it takes a special person to accomplish what Harrelson does and attempts to do in a year, and it speaks volumes about the organization that receives such dedication. Pooler Recreation Department conveys a feeling of family, and as families grow and come together, Harrelson’s only concern is that there is a lack of volunteers. “More parents should get involved,” Powell Harrelson provoked, “We should be getting more people that volunteer, and not just be dependent upon those who are paid to work at the park.” “We should not assume that those who are paid are able to do it all,” Harrelson reasoned. It is with this, an obvious fondness for the sport of baseball and for his hometown of Pooler, that Powell Harrelson both supports Pooler Recreation Department and obligates himself each year. Though a serious commitment that requires complete selflessness, volunteering in the lives of children in your community is genuinely rewarding. There’s no better way to show there’s no place like home.

As fitness professionals, they realize that it will not be easy, but they believe everyone is capable of change.

That’s where our experience and know-how helps provide the road map to success while our community and positive atmosphere makes it easy to keep motivation high.” Says Sunny. FIRST GUARANTY MORTGAGE CORPORATION
F
irst Guaranty Mortgage Corporation (FGMC) is a full service national lender offering mortgage solutions to clients of varying income and credit types. FGMC was founded with the idea that people are more than numbers and education and customer service can make the difference. They have access to a full range of mortgage sources and all of their lending specialists are dedicated to finding the right loan with the best rates, terms, and costs to meet their client’s unique needs. But that’s just the beginning of their service. Throughout the lending process, they provide regular loan updates and progress reports so the customer always knows the status of their loan. FGMC gives customers the one on one attention that online mortgage companies can’t provide. The mortgage experts at FGMC will work closely with the customer to find the right loan to fit their budget and lifestyle. First Guaranty Mortgage Corporation (FGMC) offers a wide range of purchase and refinance loan programs. One
of their mortgage professionals will be happy to discuss the products that best suit the client’s needs. Purchase Loan Programs: • Conventional • FHA Standard • FHA 1x Close • FHA 203K • Homestyle Renovation • Permanent Financing for Construction • VA • USDA Refinance Loan Programs: • Conventional • DURP • FHA Standard • FHA Streamline • VA Standard • VA IRRRL • USDA Standard • USDA Streamline Ivy Eilerman is Senior Loan Originator at First Guaranty Mortgage Corporation in Pooler. She just recently marked her 1st anniversary with FGMC and says, “I love my job.” As a dedicated mortgage expert, Ivy works diligently to accommodate her clients and to antici-
pate their needs. She believes constant communication with her customers is key to a great working relationship. “To be a successful mortgage lender, I believe communication is hands down the most important quality,” she says. To ensure the greatest customer service she can provide as a First Guaranty Mortgage employee, Ivy gives her personal cell phone number to her clients and stays in close contact with them throughout the loan process. Supporting the local community is very important to Ivy and she does this by being a part of the local Chamber of Commerce, as well as several of the local realty and banking organizations. She is currently an Effingham and Pooler Chamber Ambassador, a member of the Homebuilders Association of Greater Savannah, and a member of the Mortgage Bankers Association. At this year’s Annual Summit Awards, sponsored by the Sales and Marketing Council and the Homebuilders Association of Greater Savannah, Ivy was honored with the 2014 SMC
Gold Award for mortgage loan volume. The award winning loan originator’s advice for potential buyers is to do their homework when they are ready to purchase a home. “Don’t be afraid to ask questions! If you are a first time buyer, I suggest you take a homeowner’s course before prequalifying,” she says. Ivy also adds, “As a direct lender, FGMC can offer a greater variety of loan products, quicker turn times, lower rates, and lower fees, as well as common sense underwriting that sets us apart from other lenders,” she says. These factors provide the perfect combination for a competitive advantage in the mortgage industry. Working at First Guaranty Mortgage Corporation provides Ivy Eilerman with great enjoyment. “I absolutely love helping borrowers find a way to make their dreams of owning a home a reality. You will find, time and time again, that First Guaranty Mortgage Corporation cannot be beat,” she says.

s fashions change and trends come and go, your furniture has remained an integral part of your home. Furnishings have changed over the years, and picking out the right furniture can sometimes be a task. Not everyone is an interior designer, so finding the right “fit” for your home may be a challenge to some. But, at Wiley’s Home Center, that burden is taken off your shoulders. When you walk in the door at Wiley’s, you immediately see a vast display of furnishings, set in a “room” atmosphere, giving you a perfect picture of how your “room” should look. There is no second guessing what pieces should be placed together. Wiley’s has done that for you. Walking in the door, you will see living rooms tastefully put together with perfect matching accessories. You will see bedrooms put together with perfect accenting pieces. Dining tables and matching china cabinets, all tastefully decorated will give you a vision of how it will look in your home. Twenty eight years ago, Wiley Thomas embarked on his dream... the dream to open a quality furniture store in Effingham County. This dream became a reality in 1987 when Wiley’s Home Center opened its doors in Rincon. Now, twenty eight years later, it is still a successful family owned and operated business. Owned by him and his daughter, Detra Thomas, Wiley’s takes great pride in their business. Their customer service is second to none. You are always greeted with a friendly smile. Their experienced salespeople will cater to you and help you with whatever your needs may be. It is this impeccable customer service that sets Wiley’s apart from others and is a huge part of their continued success. Detra says, “We’re just trying to offer you the right kind of furniture, at the right price, the right way.” Wiley’s carries over 150 brands of furniture, appliances, bed-
ding and floor coverings. Popular brands such as Flexsteel, Hooker, Bassett, Vaughn Bassett, Liberty, Riverside, Serta, Whirlpool, GE and Frigidaire make up their impressive inventory. The store has over 35,000 square-feet of display and warehouse area. “We often hear customers say there is not a store like this anywhere in the area that carries the quality of furniture for the price. Along with furniture priced from the medium to high category,” Detra adds, “Our goal is to provide excellent customer service and same day delivery.” Wiley’s is a popular place to buy appliances. The store actually has onsite technicians. “A lot of people buy appliances from us because of them,” said Detra. Wiley’s offers immediate delivery, 12-month no-interest financing with approved credit, and in-store financing with approved credit, and superior service after the sale. Wiley’s is located on the north end of Rincon, just over the viaduct. It may take a few minutes longer to get to, but it is definitely worth the time. So, if you are looking for quality furniture at a reputable store, look no further. Wiley’s Home Center is the expert at “Helping to Make Your House a Home.”

TRISHA COOK
REALTOR® KELLER WILLIAMS REALTY
T
risha Cook, Realtor & Investor in Keller Williams Realty Westside, knows all about putting her client’s needs first. She is extremely passionate about real estate & customer service in general. “I decided to go into real estate because I love helping people realize their dreams. My career took off fast and I have never been happier,” she says. Trisha has strong Pooler, GA roots & is also the founder of the very popular Pooler Facebook page, ‘It’s Cooler in Pooler,’ which now has over 10,000 fans! When asked how her page became so successful she states that she believes it is because she comes from a place of contribution, believing that the residents of Pooler want to know more about what is coming to the area & what is going on in Pooler than they do about her or real estate, although she does still post all of her listings on the page as well, which is a huge benefit to her Sellers. Trisha has met many of her clients through them first being fans of her
Facebook page. Trisha is a professional when it comes to real estate in the Greater Savannah Area. Whether it’s finding a new home or selling your current one, Trisha is ready to work for you. She knows the area inside and out. Trisha says that after years in the real estate industry she finds herself doing less selling and more counseling. “People don’t want to be sold’”, Trisha states, “They want a professional who can guide them into making sure that they make the best financial decisions for their families. The agents who get into this business with that salesmen mentality aren’t the ones who ever have long-term, repeat clients.” Trisha believes that educating buyers and sellers about the process is a necessary part of the agent/client relationship. She provides a wealth of knowledge and expertise about buying and selling real estate and an eagerness to serve the client. “Finding an agent with experience, that knows how to guide you through each step of the process, is a fundamental part of your home buying
process, and one that shouldn’t be overlooked.” Keller Williams Realty Savannah Westside has grown from the ground up within Pooler to the number one real estate company in the Pooler market. When Trisha was asked to be one of the investors in the Pooler location, she jumped at the opportunity. Keller Williams Realty was founded on the principles of trust and honesty, emphasizing the importance of having the integrity to do the right thing and always putting the client’s needs first. Trisha also runs a very successful, Pooler-based real estate team. She and her team closed 117 homes in 2014 and have already closed nearly 50 homes in 2015. When asked about the success of her team, she states, “Together Everyone Achieves More. When you can get a team of specialists for the same cost as a solo agent, trying to juggle everything by themselves, why would you not hire the team? The team concept is a brilliant one, where everyone can concentrate on their one thing…whether that be Buyers, Sellers, Contract to Close or marketing. It just makes more sense & allows our service to our customers to be our top priority” An outstanding and worthy program that Trisha brought to the Greater Savannah area two years ago is the Home for Heroes program. Homes for Heroes is the nation’s largest Hero savings program, which offers discounts for Firefighters, EMT’s & all first responders, Military and Veterans, Law Enforcement, Teachers, Clergy, Nurses & Healthcare workers when buying or selling a home. At closing, the average Hero Savings are over $2,000! This program was created after the tragic events of 9/11 as a “Thank you” to the men and women who have given so much. Trisha’s clients are not the only ones who have noticed her hard work and dedication throughout her career. The Keller Williams Realtor & Internet Marketing Specialist has received numerous awards for her efforts. She was voted Savannah Morning News “Best of West Chatham Winner” for Best Realtor, Savannah Board of Realtors’ Distinguished Sales Society Continuing Member, a Top Sales Agent numerous times from 2008 to present, New Homes “Superstar” Award, and most recently was a Platinum Award Winner with Keller Williams International, as well as the Homebuilder’s Association General Brokerage Agent of the Year in both 2013 & 2014, and the 2014 General Brokerage Team of the Year. Trisha Cook loves what she does, and how many people can honestly say that? If you are looking for a Realtor who is passionate and dedicated to serving her clients, call The Trisha Cook team.
