Laboratory for Suburbia is an art and design project addressing the political possibilities of American suburbs. The project is ever evolving and is planned to unfold through a several year time span. The project began in 2019 with a small team where I served as the organizers Research Assistant. As a team we built upon the original ideas of Laboratory for Suburbia and conceptualized a final direction for the project. The desired outcome was a collection of networks of artist or architectural interventions, performances, or events located at key sites throughout St. Louis suburbia.
ZONES AND POTENTIAL SITES
My work consisted of a mix of studio-based site research and site visits throughout St. Louis County. On these visits I photographed, analyzed an identifying potential sites. I then geolocated and tagged the potential sites based off of their characteristics and locations, then translated the information to an interactive GIS mapping system. This exploration led to a deeper understanding of the psychogeography and organization of St. Louis suburbia that was represented through mapping. In addition, my responsibilities included compiling/designing/editing a site handbook for future publication. PSYCHOGEOGRAPHY

I gained real-world experience in design and architecture during my internship at Austin based Lym Miller Architecture. I worked on a number of large-scale projects and performed a wide variety of tasks including design projects of multiple programs ranging from Austin Community College buildings to residential backyard renovations. I was also solely responsible for an apartment renovation project, from site visit to client pitch, expanding my knowledge of industry dayto-day tasks such as construction drawings and ADA code compliance. For the works presented here I was tasked with improving the company marketing materials. Additionally, I developed a fresh language and house style for illustrations, client proposals, presentations and the company website. For the renderings shown I was given very basic Revit files of previous projects. I explored different views and perspectives to find a composition that best showcased the features of the project. I then exported the line drawing to Photoshop where I added color, texture, and shadow to bring the drawing to life. I collaborated with the firm’s interior designer and researched reference photos of previous projects to inspire the look of these presentation images.

Along with a changing climate, between now and 2100 we will see a change in our culture thanks to technology, creating a more individual lifestyle. How can we still retain human interactions within this artifi-

cially intelligent world? Our current society is organized around the process of bringing a resource from its location to a different location where population exists. Due to changing climate these locations will no longer have the ability to exist in one fixed location. New technologies such as the hyperloop can connect us but only if we begin to build for the future now, taking into account the changing variables of the future world. We as a human race will persist and reoriented our life’s to the things we need to survive, nutrients, air, water, and shelter. This new life will create a sustainable and inclusive environment for all of the earths habitants, that is able to adapt to the changing climate while giving back to the land that we have destroyed. In modern society so many things are invisible to us, we turn on a switch to get light but where is that energy coming from? What is the impact of flipping that switch on? Thanks to these ease of accessibility we begin to take things like this for granted. The Hyperloop has the potential to fall into that mold as well. How can the design of the structure, portals rider and community member experience shine a light on these invisible factors. Making what once was invisible, visible. We began this experiment by mapping systems, infrastructures and elements in the Missouri region that the Hyperloop could potentially “make visible” such as passage of time in relation to speed, Co2 emissions and more. Design interventions are represented in a series of storyboards. These story boards show interactions with the Hyperloop from multiple different viewpoints, from a Hyperloop rider to a pedestrian. Design interventions range from lighting apertures that visibly show air pollution levels to a compost tube where one could follow your food waste as it is composted and transported to an agricultural area. All of which are things that before Hyperloop were invisible to us.

The action of taking a Polaroid photo is much more methodological in comparison to snapping hundreds of photos on an iPhone.
