D-School Crash Course The objective of this assignment was to come up with a design plan to satisfy your partner’s gift-giving experience in very limited time. My partner gave gifts by finding out what they wanted and liked. She wanted to surprise her friend with the perfect gift, knowing that her friend likes flowers and dogs.
My job was to interview my partner and figure out what the best way to make her friend happy with the perfect gift in limited time.
After going through the feedback, the final product was a puppy. My partner was worried if her friend would have trouble taking care of the puppy so I provided a flower leash that would also tie in the liking for flowers.
The most difficult part of this process was figuring out something to satisfy my partner in the limited time I had. I did not enjoy making fast decisions because I knew with more time the design could be so much better. This project will help in the long run for when I need to get a design to a client in a short time period.
The Final Product
Dot Line The objective was to create four abstract compositions using limited elements; all lines, all dots, one dot two lines, two dots one line, two dots and two lines, or one dot and one line. Also to demonstrate value, scale, line, and visual hierarchy. I chose to represent the words; chaos, joy, terror, and stability.
I started by playing around with paper dots and lines and tried multiple iterations. I asked my peers which one represented each adjective best. I also took consideration to my knowledge of gestalt of being a whole and considering proximity, figure and ground, and continuation.
After asking for other opinions I came down to one iteration and played with it more to see if there was a stronger one within.
It was difficult to use only dots and lines because you start to narrate them as if they are characters because there is no illustrating. This project did change my perspective of abstraction because I enjoyed the challenge of the limited parameters.

Expressive Text The objective of this project was to experiment with hand lettering with excellent craft, and to express text in multiple iterations that were creative and impacts the meaning of the word. My word was center. I started out by making a mind map of words that relate to center. I created over 30 versions of my word. With the 30, I chose four that I liked the most, and created iterations of those. It was nice to get feedback from my classmates as for which iteration presented the word “center the best.
I used the text to create the definition of being in the middle of the word, and through the center of it. I also went about he way of “finding your center using photography and photographing my hands spelling out the word. It came out to be expressing a community center as well and worked. Doing multiple versions helped me realize which one represented the word best.
By doing so much hand lettering, I really gained a respect for it. To have well crafted lettering it takes time and precision. It was fun to create so many different iterations of the same word, while they could all come off as a different definition of the word as well.

Object Iterations The objective was to create a final piece that included multiple iterations of a moving object/animal with multiple mediums and media. I chose to iterate the Asian Elephant.
I made many modified blind contour drawings of elephants along with collages of texts and other images. I realized that as long as I had the floppy ears and long trunk an elephant was recognizable.
The most challenging media was text collage because of the straight lines that text usually is, but my final text collage became one of my favorite iterations. I also did a master iteration based off of Olly Moss and Alex Katz. For Olly Moss I did a silhouette of an elephant to emphasize his style. The Alex Katz iteration was a with colored pencils. I did this one in color, but when transferred it to black and white to meet the requirements for the project. It was nice to have this project before the Children’s Book because I learned some things in Photoshop that later helped me.
The Final Product
Collaborative Children’s Book The objective to the Children’s Book was to have the experience of working with a client and create a well crafted book. I was very surprised to how easy going my authors were. To start, I worked with my authors to create a main character for each. I had two books to illustrate. One book was called Bengie the Koala, and Jeremiah and the Day of Big Dreams.
I found inspiration in children’s cartoons and books that I read growing up. I thought about what I enjoyed reading as a child and then tried to work off of those books. I drew all my illustrations, then once they were scanned into the computer I digitally colored them in Photoshop to make them look attractive. For both books I tried to keep a limited color palette. This project was a lot of work, but once it was all done, it was definitely worth all the work.
After leaving my mother’s pouch, I will begin to eat gum leaves as my main diet. I sniff my leaves to determine which are the best and only eat leaves that are high in protein. I do not drink water because I get the water that I need from eating the gum leaves.
When I was about seven months old, I left my mother’s pouch and ate gum leaves for the first time. During the next few months, I will hang from my mother’s belly, ride on her back, and return to her pouch to drink milk until I am too big or she has another joey.
Bengie was obviously a koala, so I tried drawing multiple versions of koalas as cartoons because that is what my author asked for. Some challenges that I face was creating one animal look the same in all different poses for various pages. My author helped with some ideas for pages that had a lot of writing. It helped because I knew she would like it then.
For Jeremiah, I decided on a mouse. My author for this book contributed the idea of Jeremiah climbing a mountain, and having birds in some of the pages. I thought the feedback was very helpful because I found myself struggling a couple times for ideas, and they were easy changes to make.
He took a long look up to the top of the mountain, and he started to climb. Little by little he got closer to his goal, and soon, he made it, all by himself.
After catching his breath, Jeremiah wanted to be the strongest mouse in the world. So he was.
All too soon, he saw his house below. So he came back down and ran to his mom. With a big warm hug, and a nice warm meal, he told his family all about his day and his big dreams come true.

Soon he felt himself going up, up, UP! He opened his eyes, and saw he was flying. He flew so high he could touch the clouds. He talked to the birds, and soaked in the sun.
