2019 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

President Erin DeWeese Brian D. Wiggs Homes, Inc.

By HBA President Erin DeWeese

Happy Spring fellow members! The Home Builders Association of Greater Tulsa hit the ground running in 2019! The January General Membership Mixer (GMM) was Family Feud. Everyone enjoyed good food and networking while watching teams square off for some fun competition. The February GMM was a luncheon welcoming Tulsa Mayor GT Bynum. Mayor Bynum gave attending members an update on all things Tulsa and also participated in a Q & A. A big thank you to Gabby Bridenbaugh and Stacey Bayles for their hard work setting up our GMMs! Later in February the Economic Forecast was held at Forest Ridge Golf Club in Broken Arrow. Over 100 members attended this event and received some valuable information concerning the Tulsa area market. I would like to recognize Lantz Day for taking this event to another level! If you were unable to attend, please reach out to Ross Newcomer for access to all of the reports received at this event. Tulsa HBA leadership, staff, and many of our members traveled to Las Vegas for the 2018 International Builders Show (IBS) put on by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Tulsa HBA leadership and staff brought back some great ideas that we will apply to our local association. IBS is an event every member should attend at least once. There are continuing education opportunities, new products, and new procedures on display to help anyone in our industry make their business better. I would like to congratulate Mike Means, our Oklahoma Homebuilders Association Executive Officer, for being installed as the 2019 NAHB Chair of the Executive Officers Committee. Thank you to our leadership, national directors, and members at large that took time out of their busy schedules to attend this event. A special thank you to Jeffrey Smith for helping everyone get to the appropriate meetings and setting up the Board dinner. The 2019 Greater Tulsa Home & Garden Show wrapped up on March 10th celebrating 70 years! After a dip in attendance the past few years our Home & Garden Show committee decided it was time to invest some more dollars into marketing. In addition to more dollars a robust social media campaign was developed, new promotional ideas were executed, and more entertainment

oriented events were showcased. This resulted in almost 29,000 people attending this year and the feedback from vendors at the show was very upbeat. This event would not be possible without our member volunteers so I want to thank all of our members that chaired committees, volunteered on committees, and/or just worked some shifts during the show! You are what make this event possible and one of the top Home and Garden shows in the country! I want to personally recognize the efforts of our 2019 Chairman, Allen Jenkins as well as 2019 Vice Chairman, Pablo Perez. On March 24th, the 40Below Council hosted a member mixer at Got Wood Axe Throwing Co. in Jenks. The event was very well attended and raised money for our local Political Action Committee (HBAPAC). Thank you to 40Below President, Keelyn Elliott, for reaching out to Got Wood and having them donate their location for no charge to the HBA. If you are a new member trying to figure out how to get the most out of your membership please reach out to myself or any of our outstanding staff so that we can point you in the right direction! Ask about our Ambassadors Program which pairs you up with another member who will work with you one on one to figure out how to get the most out of your membership. If you don’t do anything else, please RSVP for the June 27th President’s Reception. It’s a breakfast meeting that goes from 8am-9am and will get you up to speed on everything you need to know to start maximizing your membership. This is also a great opportunity to sign up for the Ambassadors Program. Thank you to every Ambassador for sharing your time and experience with our new members! In closing, the Parade of Homes will be here before we know it. More information will be coming soon. Mark your calendars for June 15-23 as we will be putting on another first class showcase of homes! Wishing you success in all your endeavors, Sincerely, Erin DeWeese

What an honor it is to serve a membership and organization that is always giving back to others in the community. Since our inception in 1942 there are countless stories of members giving their time, talent and treasure for the betterment of the industry and those in need. 2019 is no different and I want to take a moment to recognize some of you for your contributions. Giving of your time is often the hardest thing to do, and the least recognized as a major contributing factor to the accomplishment of a goal. The Tulsa Home and Garden Show would not be possible if not for the more than 120 volunteers that gave a minimum of 15 hours of their time. Those volunteers did not ask for payment, recognition, or special favor, but instead came to the River Spirit Event Center to serve the Tulsa HBA in its largest event production. Whether you, as a volunteer, took tickets, provided information, worked security, landscaped entrances or any of the other dozens of opportunities to serve, your time commitment did not go unnoticed. I want to say a HUGE THANK YOU for your efforts! This year we saw a 20% increase in attendance and received nothing but compliments from the more than 500 vendors. The excitement is once again in the air and everyone is looking forward to the 2020 Home and Garden Show. Thank you to our 2019 show chairman, Allen Jenkins, and 2019 show vice-chairman, Pablo Perez, for your enthusiastic leadership and direction to a successful show. These two men gave more than 60 hours each to serve in their leadership roles and it is very much appreciated.

Finally, our Remodelers Council is in the planning stages of a community service project to help a family renovate a new home after their original home was condemned for living. Thank you for lending your talent for the betterment of others!

Giving of your treasure is how the Tulsa HBA and our HBA Charitable Foundation support the community through education and housing related needs. The Appetite for Construction was held on April 18th at Metro Appliances and More and more than 250 people had a great time sampling some of the best food in town. We are still waiting on final numbers to release the amount of treasure that was given that night, but it was one of our best events to date. Thank you to event chairperson, Carrie DeWeese, and her committee for producing such a phenomenal event. If you would like to give your treasure in support of the HBA Charitable Foundation’s mission, there are still two great opportunities in 2019. The Evening of Giving will be held on September When you volunteer your time, it’s 19th at the Mike Fretz Event Center, and most valuable if you use your talent to Build My Future will occur on October achieve the greatest success. 3 REMODELING PROJECTS TO REENERGIZE YOUR HOME Renovate Your Kitchen

Are the flowers in bloom and warmer weather inspiring you to tackle a few home improvement projects? Remodeling your home can payoff in personal enjoyment and comfort and improve the value of your home. A professional remodeler can provide guidance on home improvement projects that will increase your homes resell value. As the home building and remodeling industry celebrates National Home Remodeling Month in May, many home owners are taking steps to transform their current homes into a personal oasis. High-impact projects that can revamp your home include curb-appeal enhancements, kitchen renovations and bathroom improvements. Improve Your Home’s Exterior The color scheme of your home exterior and cleanliness of your yard makes a big impact on curb appeal. If needed, consider purchasing a new garage door to give your home a facelift. Your front door also makes an important first impression. A fresh color of paint, window trim or siding is a simple way to create an inviting look to your home exterior. Landscape or clean your yard. Garden centers offer information and tips on plants that will thrive in our local climate. Some garden centers offer free design services. A mixture of different colored plants and heights will enrich your yard. If your home walkway is cracked or dated, replace the path with new flagstones or outdoor lighting. Adding a fountain or water feature is another way to take your lawn to the next level. 12

HOME BUILDING NEWS 2019

A modern kitchen is not only a space for cooking. Kitchens are a central hub for home entertaining and sharing meals. A professional remodeler can make recommendations on finishes that will boost your home resell value. Your remodeler can also provide you with advice on what to consider when replacing countertops, creating custom cabinets, flooring and appliances. For example, energy-efficient appliances are among the popular features home buyers seek out when considering purchasing a new home. Not all kitchens need a complete overhaul. Replacing dated lighting fixtures, faucets or sinks makes a difference in design. Other design upgrades such as new window treatments, cabinet hardware or a fresh coat of paint can spruce up your kitchen. Bathroom Improvements Cosmetic updates to a bathroom can be as simple as replacing dated fixtures and lighting. Freshen up your bathroom by re-grouting tile or removing and replacing caulk around the tub and sink. A white tub, sink and toilet is a popular color choice in bathrooms for home buyers, according to a recent National Association of Home Builders survey. Adding a fresh coat of paint, similar your kitchen or home exterior, makes a difference in brightening up your bathroom. A professional remodeler can also add storage with cabinets or shelves.

DID YOU KNOW? BUILDERS MUST OBTAIN A SIDEWALK/DRIVEWAY PERMIT IN THE CITY OF TULSA As defined by Ordinance, any time work is completed in the Right-of- Way (ROW) contractors must make application for a Right of Way Minor Construction Permit. A Right of Way Minor Construction Permit consists of the following categories; Sidewalk/Driveway, Temporary Use of Street, Street/Alley Cut, Irrigation, Bore, and Other Excavation Activities. In the past, a concrete company applied for a Curb Cut Permit and charged the contractor for the permit. Several years ago, both the process and permit name changed when concrete companies stopped pulling permits and builders/developers became responsible for sidewalk/driveway permits. As a result of recent street maintenance projects, City staff discovered substandard driveway installations and that sidewalk/driveway permits were not being required or enforced. Today, there are renewed efforts by the City of Tulsa to assure that applications are submitted for sidewalk/driveway permits and inspections are completed.

BUILDERS MUST OBTAIN A DRIVEWAY/SIDEWALK PERMIT - Title 35: Chapter 6; Section 601

For residential structures, builders are required to obtain a separate sidewalk/driveway permit for installation. After the building permit is obtained and before driveway or sidewalk pour, please apply for a sidewalk/driveway permit. The process is quick and simple, and the steps are as follows: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

Submit Right of Way (ROW) Minor Construction Permit Application to the Permit Center in person or utilize the online permitting portal (please include a site plan): https://www.cityoftulsa.org/government/departments/development-services/permitting/ *Please note, the application and site plan can be sent directly to rowpermits@cityoftulsa.org Confirm contractor has a Sidewalk and Driveway Contractor’s Bond with the City of Tulsa. (contractor submits a $5,000 bond to the City of Tulsa and the bond is good for 6 months or 1 year depending on insurance company. The bond is good for all the driveways and sidewalks they do in that allotted time). Pay application fee of $134.20. Application will be processed and reviewed within 15 days. After initial application review, City staff will notify applicant within 2-3 business days of status. Permit issued. Sub-grade inspection required before pour. Final inspection after pour.

Additional information about inspections and timelines may be found on the application form.

HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION OF GREATER TULSA REMODELERS COUNCIL WINS NATIONAL AWARD The Remodelers Council of the Home Builders Association of Greater Tulsa (HBAGT) was honored with a national award, the Council Award for Demonstrating Remodeling Excellence (CADREs), for outstanding membership recruitment and retention from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Remodelers. The awards were announced during NAHB Remodelers annual awards presentation at the 2019 International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas on Feb. 19. To increase retention, the Remodelers Council board voted to add to the roles of secretary and treasurer, assigning them to act as both calling and greeting committees to prospective and new members. The secretary and treasurer took pride in their new duties and created the gold-standard for how to conduct and manage each role responsibility. The role lasts the duration of the members’ role on the leadership ladder, which is one full calendar year. The CADRE is the NAHB Remodelers’ highest national award for work at the local level. The awards, judged by members of NAHB Remodelers’ leadership, are presented each year to local remodelers councils and individuals whose work at a local remodelers council exemplifies the best practices of the remodeling industry. GAIN A COMPETITIVE EDGE WITH A PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATION In today’s evolving market, it’s more important than ever for building-industry professionals to maintain their competitive edge. Earning a professional designation from NAHB Education can be a great way to distinguish yourself – and your company – from your competition. During National Designation Month in March, seize the opportunity to advance your industry knowledge and skills. Having a designation tells clients that you have honed your business skills and have superior training, hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge of your profession. Designation holders also can take advantage of valuable networking opportunities during their enrollment, working closely with expert instructors and other professionals within their field and outside their specific areas of expertise. During National Designation Month, NAHB also educates consumers about the value of selecting a professional with a designation, so your hard work will mean even more when it comes marketing yourself and your business. During March, builders, remodelers and other industry professionals nationwide can take advantage of the many special events local HBAs are hosting to encourage continuing education and recognize designation holders across the country. OWASSO CHAPTER GOLF TOURNAMENT At Stone Canyon in Owasso, the Patriot Golf Club is where golfers experience championship play amid limestone canyons, lush wetlands, and native trees. This year, players at the 2019 Owasso Chapter Golf Tournament were received at the Patriot’s new clubhouse and were introduced to the pool and golf house; all part of a $9.5M expansion project. The multi-phase expansion complements the original premise of the Patriot Golf Club as a sanctuary for those who are passionate about golf and who love our country, its way of life, and those who serve in its defense. In addition to the outstanding architectural design of the clubhouse, its focal point is an art gallery featuring portraits of Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt and paintings that highlight our nation’s history and traditions. On April 2, players enjoyed unseasonably pleasant temperatures and tolerable winds at the 2019 Owasso Chapter Golf Tournament at the Patriot Golf Club. This year’s 1st place winning team was Bill McCullough, John Allan, Doug Terry, and David Bond. Nick Wofford, Eric Gentry, Matt Cozort, and Jamie Fixico claimed 2nd place with Mike Walker, Bryan Casey, Sean McClanahan, and Britt White coming in 3rd place. Kyle Richison’s prize as a contest hole winner was a power recliner provided by Mathis Brother Furniture. Players at this year’s HBA and BUILD-PAC tournaments should start sharpening their skills since Mathis Bros. will be providing a similar prize at the HBA tournament in May and the BUILD-PAC tournament in October!

As in years past, sponsors and players rallied in support of the Owasso Chapter and its charitable beneficiary, the AMBUCS-Owasso Chapter. It’s with great pride that we recognize the sponsors of the 2019 Owasso Chapter Golf Tournament, without whom this tournament would not be possible.
