Editio Musica Budapest Bartók composed the Sonatina for solo piano in his ‘Romanian year’ of 1915; this was when he also composed the set of Romanian Folk Dances and the Romanian Christmas Carols. In this relatively short piano piece (lasting three to four minutes), the composer used instrumental folk music collected in Transylvania. In the first movement, Bartók conjures up two bagpipes, and, in the second, a fiddler playing for a bear dance. The first edition of the Sonatina was published by Rózsavölgyi in 1919, and the composer premiered the work in 1920 in Pozsony (Bratislava). This edition continues the series of György Kurtág’s Bach transcriptions for piano duet which were published in ‘Transcriptions from Machaut to J.S. Bach’ and ‘Seven Bach Chorales.’ These pieces were originally written for the Kurtágs, György and his wife Márta, for their own use, and they were often played, together with the ‘Játékok’ [Games] pieces, at the couple’s piano duet concerts. This transcription is dedicated to Víkingur Ólafsson.
George Frideric Handel, born in the same year as Johann Sebastian Bach and Domenico Scarlatti, ranks among the most important composers of the Baroque era, alongside Bach and Scarlatti, Dieterich Buxtehude and Georg Philipp Telemann. His compositions for piano (or, in Handel’s time, for harpsichord) are characterized by alternating homophonic and polyphonic styles. Easy suite movements are complemented by two easy arrangements from the composer’s famous opera and oratorio works.
Leokadiya Kashperova: Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 2

The Piano Concerto (1900) is Kashperova’s earliest surviving orchestral work, and it was premiered by the composer the following year in Moscow and St Petersburg, bringing her much wider recognition and paving the way for an international career. Cast in three movements and in a Romantic idiom, pianistic virtuosity is often channelled into the pianist’s left hand, which is required to negotiate widely-spaced ‘extreme’ arpeggios – awkwardly angular when adagio, fiendishly technical when molto allegro. Kashperova’s orchestral colours are achieved by felicitous solos for the woodwind, horns and brass.

Leokadiya Kashperova: The Eagle and the Snake Ballad for Baritone Voice and Piano

Leokadiya Kashperova (1872-1940), previously known for being Stravinsky’s piano teacher, was a virtuoso pianist and composer in the romantic tradition whose work is undergoing rediscovery today. Following her graduation from the St Petersburg Conservatoire, Kashperova became personally acquainted with the poet Yakov Polonsky and often attended his literary gatherings. When he died in 1898, Kashperova responded with this setting of one of his most celebrated ballads, for the benefit of the memorial fund created to support the poet’s widow and family. Here is a vivid musical dramatization of the old proverb ‘Pride comes before a fall’ - quite literally a fall in the case of the haughty eagle who is deceived by the wily snake into displaying his arrogance once too often.

A composer and conductor of genius, Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) left us several operas, ballets, largescale symphonic and choral works, but his worldwide reputation is derived mainly from his many chamber works, written for various instrumental formations with a preference for wind instruments. Bozza composed the Aria during the period of his Grand Prix de Rome in 1934. A free adaptation of the third movement of J. S. Bach’s Pastoral in F Major for organ (BWV 590), this lyrical piece demonstrates the composer’s taste and predilection for wind instruments, in particular for the flute.

Gabriel Pierné (1863-1937) was a celebrated pianist, composer, and conductor. In the spotlight of Pierné’s musical legacy stands his composition,the Canzonetta for Clarinet and Piano, Op. 19, dedicated to the clarinettist Charles Turban. This short yet elegant piece, with its A-B-A structure and an emphasis on playing “avec élégance” (with elegance), epitomizes the “genre piece” or “salon piece” style. Its moderate Andantino tempo, a flexible first theme in E-major, and a lyrical, slightly rubato second theme present a delightful musical challenge. The piece’s central section allows the piano to shine while the clarinet offers musical commentary, leading to a recapitulation where the clarinet regains its solo role.

Anti-dogmatic and open to modernity in all its forms, in the course of his career, Jacques Ibert (1890–1962) embraced every genre, from chamber music to symphonic and choreographic works, also composing many film scores. In 1935, his Pièce for solo flute was recorded, in its first version, by the famous flautist Marcel Moyse, who also performed it live for the first time in Prague in 1936.
A sense of color and a formal conciseness are the hallmarks of Dutilleux’s elegant musical language, which drew its inspiration from various twentieth-century trends. He was a demanding composer, surprisingly self-critical when it came to his own work: he destroyed most of his early pieces, sparing, among others, his Sonatine for flute and piano - a competition piece for the Paris Conservatoire in 1943 - because of its enormous success. Descended from a long line of musicians, Nadia Boulanger (1887-1979) was the personification of music in the eyes of her contemporaries; but her work as a composer was for a long time overshadowed by her gifts as a virtuoso at the piano and organ, her skill as a pioneering conductor and choir director and, above all, her incredible charisma as a teacher. Among Boulanger’s most frequently performed works are her Trois Pièces for cello and piano, a short cycle in which expressiveness, tenderness and virtuosity follow one another.

The world premiere took place at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles. This 23-minute score is dedicated to Frank Gehry, architect of Disney Hall, and Lindberg’s music explores the sonic spaces of the then-new concert venue. Several transcripts have been made of Johann Sebastian Bach’s lute works over the past 150 years. Due to the simultaneous harmonic and melodic character of the lute and the lute harpsichord, favored by Bach, these usually evoke the original sound with a combination of several instruments (for example, Zoltán Kodály’s transcription of the lute prelude in C minor for cello and piano). The joint work of cellist Tamás Zétényi (*1985) and composer Marcell Dargay (*1980) is exceptional in that respect that it transfers all movements of the lute suite in C minor, including the fugue, to a single cello. The publication also includes an ornamented version of the sarabande.
Mark Simpson: Ariel for Basset Clarinet, Violin, Cello, and Piano
Boosey & Hawkes
Ariel is scored for basset clarinet, violin, cello and piano, and is a response to the poem of the same name by Sylvia Plath. Simpson reacted to the poem musically, jotting down the ideas for instrumental combinations, as well as the emotional content as he read the words. The piece begins, (‘Stasis in darkness...’) and gradually wakens up to a furious outburst in all the instruments. Scales descend to the depths of the instrumentsí ranges, out of which a slow, winding duet for basset clarinet and cello leads to the centre of the work – a slow, calm three-chord chorale. The work then comes to a stand-still where short outbursts are gradually transformed into new, faster material. The three-chord chorale motif then goes through a number of permutations until a recap of the opening’s outburst is quickly side-lined by a boldly expressive return of the chorale motif. This piece is about extremes – extremes of expression, of instrumental textures and capabilities.
With words from Stephanie Dietz, this contemporary work from Rob Dietz is a beautiful composition with a propulsive time signature mixed with lush and ever-present vocal textures.
