In the summer of 1888, his fiancée Caroline Alice Roberts surprised him with a self-written poem, Love’s Grace. Elgar returned the favor with a love note for piano. Offered to the music publisher Schott, the gem was to become Edward Elgar’s first published work in 1889. However, the breakthrough would only come with the Frenchized title Salut d’amour. The miniature has now become a classic hit and is also likely to enchant in the piano trio version.
