Iam sure that you know that our beloved Alice Parker passed away in December 2023. Over the years, I have kept hand-written letters from composers I work with because I often have “pinch me” moments while working with incredible artists who I have long admired. I kept one such letter from Alice (above) that she sent when we finished production on her beautiful work Heavenly Hurt. She sent me an autographed copy of the score, which I cherish.
The fact that Alice (and many other composers in the Walton family) would take the time out of their demanding schedules to offer gratitude is very inspiring to me. For all of us, the routines of every day can feel like a grind, so it is a good practice to remember the “why” of what we do.
This new release includes a wide breadth of pieces that cover everything from humor (There’s a Hole in the Bucket) to drama (Dance Macabre), heartbreak (Khutšo) to celebration (This Little Light of Mine), and the everyday (Time Is) to wonder (Calling from Afar). Premiered in 2023 by an American choir and French orchestra in Caen, France, Out of this Darkness: A Normandy Cantata dares to hope for a repentance from the interminable waves of violent conquest. The salty shores of Normandy have washed away more blood than can be measured, and when you perform this work, you can participate in the washing. The new text, written by Charles Anthony Silvestri, puts the story of Normandy into the context of the Song of Moses from Psalm 90. The result is a masterpiece from a highly regarded lyricist. The genius pairing with John Wykoff’s music provides compelling melodies with influences of historical genres and jazz. Out of this Darkness may be performed with piano or with orchestra.

Mass for a new milLennium

Mass for a New Millennium is an uplifting masterwork written with hope for peace and prosperity for a new era after a tumultuous 20th century. The Mass was premiered in the spring of 2000 by the Pacific Lutheran University Choir of the West and its conductor, Richard Sparks.
This multi-movement concert work is constructed in similar form to the concert masses of Mozart and Haydn. The music is very melodically based, with regular changes in meter throughout that follow the natural phrasing of the texts. Surprising key shifts and mild dissonance dot the primarily warm and consonant work. Written for organ, harp, oboe, timpani, and mallet percussion, but also suitable to be performed with piano and oboe only.
