Dear Readers, The global pandemic has presented all of us with unexpected difficulties and sorrows. We had to find answers to new challenges, and it has also forced us to rethink our values and priorities. The last year and a half have brought important changes at Editio Musica Budapest Zeneműkiadó (EMBZ), and its partner company Universal Music Publishing Editio Musica Budapest (UMP EMB), with an almost complete shutdown of concert life, and music education having to face the challenges of the online world. Although our turnover of sheet music has fallen considerably, we are putting our freed-up capacity into new developments. We have made a significant step forward in environment protection, with a considerable part of our publications printed on high-quality, age-resistant paper made from renewable resources and produced in an environment-friendly manner. In addition, the yellowishwhite printed sheet music is much pleasanter to hold and read. We have installed a state-of-the-art digital printer, thanks to which we can produce more print-on-demand scores, quickly and in immaculate print quality. We have launched our own digital sheet music platform, accessible at www.digikotta.hu. The digital score is accessible from any device (computer, tablet, or smartphone). The music can be enlarged and shrunk as needed, with page-turning triggered by touch, pedal, or keystroke, and the option of three different viewing modes. With instructional materials, alongside the music we also give audio recordings, images, videos and interactive tasks. We are proud that EMBZ curates the complete editions of the work of the two most influential Hungarian composers: Liszt and Bartók (the latter in collaboration with G. Henle Verlag). In the following pages we present not only the latest volumes in these two series, but also the Urtext editions for which they served as a basis: Bartók’s series For Children and Mikrokosmos and his complete choral works, and new separate editions of Liszt’s most important piano works. Our series of Bartók’s performing editions has grown to include two new volumes containing Mozart’s complete piano sonatas. Since 2017, EMBZ has been the distributor of the sheet music catalog of Universal Music Publishing Editio Musica, the largest publisher of Hungarian 20th century and contemporary music. UMP EMB has added two new editions to the oeuvre of the greatest living Hungarian composer, the 95-year-old György Kurtág: volume X of the iconic Játékok (Games), and two Musorgsky transcriptions for piano duet. The EMBZ team wish you enjoyable reading, and long-lasting musical experiences. August 2021

New Liszt Edition, Supplementary Volume 16 FRANZ LISZT
Free Arrangements and Technical Exercises Edited by Adrienne KACZMARCZYK, Ágnes SAS, in collaboration with Nicolas DUFETEL The series of Supplementary Volumes includes early versions and fragments. This volume contains early versions of transcriptions of a Schubert song (Die Rose) and the Marche des pèlerins from Berlioz’s Harold en Italie symphony, as well as a fantasia written on themes from Bellini’s opera La sonnambula. Particularly interesting material can be found in the Appendix. In addition to sketches and drafts for arrangements of Spanish themes, there are three sets of exercises published here for the first time, which shed light on technical aspects of Liszt’s piano teaching. This latest volume of the New Liszt Edition includes a detailed preface in German, English, and Hungarian containing new research findings, together with five manuscript facsimiles and critical notes. Simultaneously with the cloth-bound Complete Edition, a practical paperback version has been published, the contents of which are identical to those of the hardcover edition, minus the inclusion of critical notes.

Béla Bartók Complete Critical Edition, Volumes 40 & 41 BÉLA BARTÓK
Mikrokosmos Edited by Yusuke NAKAHARA Mikrokosmos, which is perhaps the 20th century’s most influential set of piano pieces, has been published in a new critical edition. The introductory studies in English, Hungarian, and German that preface the edition explore not only the genesis and reception of the pieces, but also provide the most detailed guidance to date in questions concerning the notation and performance of the music. The edition also includes exercises and notes written by Bartók for Mikrokosmos. The critical commentary for this edition is published in volume 41 of the Complete Edition. The Béla Bartók Complete Critical Edition is jointly published by G. Henle Publishers, Munich, and Editio Musica Budapest Zeneműkiadó Ltd. It is distributed worldwide by G. Henle Publishers, except for Hungary, which is exclusively dealt with by Editio Musica Budapest Zeneműkiadó Ltd.

Bartók’s Mikrokosmos has been one of the milestones in pedagogical piano repertoire for 80 years – and yet it is also far more than a “classical” piano primer. These 153 piano pieces, organized in ascending order of difficulty, engage not only with technical aspects of piano playing but also with the fundamentals of composition - from “Imitation and Inversion,” “Ostinato,” and “Free Variations,” concerning compositional technique, to mood pieces and pieces with programmatic ideas such as “Notturno,” “Boating,” “From the Diary of a Fly,” or the famous “Six Dances in Bulgarian Rhythm.” Mikrokosmos first appeared in 1940 in six volumes. Based on volume 40 of the Bartók Complete Edition published in 2020 (Z. 15040), the present Urtext edition offers the series gathered in three volumes. This edition includes Bartók’s preface, exercises, and notes written for the first edition. Furthermore, it also features a preface and comments by the editor, which not only discuss the genesis and the compositional sources but also provide performers, teachers and pupils alike, with authentic and detailed information about Bartók’s notation and the specific performing problems of Mikrokosmos.

Urtext Editions based on the Béla Bartók Complete Critical Edition BÉLA BARTÓK
For Children in two volumes Bartók composed his first pedagogical collection For Children between 1908 and 1911. The first edition was issued between 1909 and 1911 in four volumes, comprising two of Hungarian and two of Slovak folk song arrangements. After moving to America, Bartók considered it important to produce new editions of his earlier works. Thus in autumn 1943, together with his new publisher Boosey & Hawkes, he planned a new edition of For Children, and to this end completely revised the collection. The present edition – which contains the same scores as those in volume 37 of the Béla Bartók Complete Critical Edition (Z. 15037) – is based on the revised version that the composer made in 1943 for the new edition, to which he also referred to as ‘’corrected.’’ We have added Hungarian translations to the English titles but we have also restored the original collection of folk song texts with parallel English translations. The pieces discarded from the revised version, as well as early versions that are significantly different from the revised version, are included in the Appendix. The Appendix also contains two transcriptions of Bartók’s recordings from 1945 that show typical concert variants of For Children. This publication contains a preface and editorial comments in both Hungarian and English.

The three-volume edition is based on volume 9 of the Béla Bartók Complete Critical Edition (Z. 15009). The lyrics in this edition are in the original languages and in the translations authorized by the composer. Literal English translations are provided in the Appendix, which also includes early and alternative versions of the works. Our edition is distinguished by absolute authenticity regarding both the musical text and the style of notation, as well as superior engraving and print quality. The edition is complete with informative prefaces (in Hungarian, English, and German) and detailed Editorial Comments (in Hungarian and English). The Comments give an overview of the textual, folk-music, and compositional sources, and provide detailed information on the performance practice of Bartók’s choral works. The three volumes are available in two formats: paperback and cloth-bound. The paperback editions can be bought separately, while the cloth-bound volumes are available only together in a slipcase. Each work included in these volumes will also be published separately.

The Bartók Performing Editions WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART
Piano Sonatas in two volumes Bartók taught piano at the Music Academy in Budapest from 1907 to 1934. In his first years as a professor the Budapest music publishers Rozsnyai and Rózsavölgyi commissioned him to prepare so-called instructive editions (including performance marks, fingering, and notes for the performer) of several classics of the piano repertoire, altogether more than two thousand pages of music. Bartók’s editing reflects contemporary ideas about performance, but is for the most part more detailed and elaborate than other similar instructive editions at the turn of the century. Our renewed edition contains footnotes in three languages (Hungarian, German, English); we have added an afterword by László Somfai (in Hungarian and English) which details the circumstances of the first publication, Bartók’s sources and his working methods. Bartók’s Mozart concept is outlined in detail, and the author reveals the problems surrounding the composer’s edition, and puts into a historical context the performance marks used by Bartók. In new editorial footnotes the reader’s attention is drawn to significant problems of authenticity and text revealed by the Mozart research in the last hundred years.

GYÖRGY KURTÁG
Games X Diary entries, personal messages The piano series entitled Games, written from 1973 onwards, was conceived as a piano method. As the years went by, the series lost its didactic character, and it came to be seen as a document from Kurtág’s workshop, offering a key to his grander symphonic, chamber, and vocal works as well. The tenth volume is divided into two parts. In the first half, earlier and hitherto unpublished pieces line up from Suite, written in 1943, to the 1980s, providing insight into the development of Kurtág’s musical language. The second half includes pieces composed between 2002 and 2011. The movements, often aphorismic in their briefness, hide associations with various aspects of European music history. Many of them are homage or in memoriam pieces, or subjective personal messages to friends, colleagues, and beloved family members – and thereby to all music-loving people.

GYÖRGY KURTÁG
Two Musorgsky Transcriptions For György Kurtág, Musorgsky’s works have always been an important model. Several of his works contain pieces referring to Musorgsky (such as Games III and The Small Snag), and in his opera, Fin de partie, he also refers to Musorgsky’s declamation style. He made these two transcriptions for piano duet in 1989, continuing a series of his earlier pre-Classical transcriptions. The transcriptions were premiered by the composer and his wife, Márta.

The composer was inspired to write these pieces by the Corridor Quartet (György Lakatos, Mihály Duffek, Zsófia Stefán, and Sára Rebeka Tóth), with their open attitude to music and their enchanting sound world. The timbres of the bassoon harmony are emphasised still more by being joined by the double bass, and by a voice or flute soaring above them. One reviewer writes of the CD Corridoors: ‘Easy to listen to, but modern: modern, and yet easy to listen to. And because of the sound of the bassoons, ‘Easy to listen to, but modern: modern, and yet easy to listen to.
